Atmospheric simulation chambers continue to be indispensable tools for research in the atmospheric sciences. Insights from chamber studies are integrated into atmospheric chemical transport models, which are used for science-informed policy decisions. However, a centralized data management and access infrastructure for their scientific products had not been available in the United States and many parts of the world. ICARUS (Integrated Chamber Atmospheric data Repository for Unified Science) is an open access, searchable, web-based infrastructure for storing, sharing, discovering, and utilizing atmospheric chamber data [https://icarus.ucdavis.edu]. ICARUS has two parts: a data intake portal and a search and discovery portal. Data in ICARUS are curated, uniform, interactive, indexed on popular search engines, mirrored by other repositories, version-tracked, vocabulary-controlled, and citable. ICARUS hosts both legacy data and new data in compliance with open access data mandates. Targeted data discovery is available based on key experimental parameters, including organic reactants and mixtures that are managed using the PubChem chemical database, oxidant information, nitrogen oxide (NOx) content, alkylperoxy radical (RO2) fate, seed particle information, environmental conditions, and reaction categories. A discipline-specific repository such as ICARUS with high amounts of metadata works to support the evaluation and revision of atmospheric model mechanisms, intercomparison of data and models, and the development of new model frameworks that can have more predictive power in the current and future atmosphere. The open accessibility and interactive nature of ICARUS data may also be useful for teaching, data mining, and training machine learning models.

Environmental chamber studies are widely employed to investigate atmospheric chemistry and aerosol formation. However, the large surface area-to-volume ratio of a chamber leads to effects that need to be accounted for in order to apply the results of chamber studies to the ambient atmosphere. These include, but are not limited to, gas-wall partitioning and particle deposition to walls, both of which can impact quantification of reaction products. Here, a low-cost vaporizer was developed to provide a means to rapidly create well-characterized organic vapors and aerosol particles inside the chamber. This in situ approach eliminates the losses to surfaces that can occur when organic gases or particles are created in a device outside the chamber and then transported inside through tubing, thus providing a simple means for achieving quantitative addition. Thermally stable volatile organic compounds can be added to the chamber within ∼1 min, which allows for accurate measurements of gas-wall partitioning timescales and equilibrium using gas chromatography. The vaporizer can also be used to create low-volatility organic aerosol particles with a mean diameter of ∼150 nm and selectable mass concentration as low as 5 µg m−3 via homogeneous nucleation within a few minutes. Such an aerosol can be used to calibrate or evaluate the performance of instruments such as the scanning mobility particle sizer in laboratory and field studies. We present results of the first intercomparison of real-time instruments for gas/particle partitioning of organic species. Four recently-developed instruments that directly measure gas/particle partitioning in near-real time were deployed in Centreville, Alabama during the Southern Oxidant Aerosol Study (SOAS) in 2013. Two instruments were filter inlet for gases and aerosols high-resolution chemical ionization mass spectrometers (FIGAERO-HRToF-CIMS) with acetate (A-CIMS) and iodide (I-CIMS) ionization sources, respectively; the third was a semi-volatile thermal desorption aerosol GC-MS (SV-TAG); and the fourth was a high-resolution thermal desorption proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometer (HR-TD-PTRMS). Signals from these instruments corresponding to several organic acids were chosen for comparison. The campaign average partitioning fractions show good correlation. A similar level of agreement with partitioning theory is observed. Thus the intercomparison exercise shows promise for these new measurements, as well as some confidence on the measurement of low versus high particle-phase fractions. However, detailed comparison show several systematic differences that lie beyond estimated measurement errors. These differences may be due to at least eight different effects: (1) underestimation of uncertainties under low signal-to-noise; (2) inlet and/or instrument adsorption/desorption of gases; (3) differences in particle size ranges sampled; (4) differences in the methods used to quantify instrument backgrounds; (5) errors in high-resolution fitting of overlapping ion groups; (6) differences in the species included in each measurement due to different instrument sensitivities; and differences in (7) negative or (8) positive thermal decomposition (or ion fragmentation) artifacts. The available data are insufficient to conclusively identify the reasons, but evidence from these instruments and available data from an ion mobility spectrometer shows the particular importance of effects 6–8 in several cases. This comparison highlights the difficulty of this measurement and its interpretation in a complex ambient environment, and the need for further improvements in measurement methodologies, including isomer separation, and detailed study of the possible factors leading to the observed differences. Measurements of submicron particulate matter (PM) were performed at an urban background station, in Helsinki, Finland during wintertime to investigate the chemical characteristics and sources of PM1. The PM1 was dominated by sulfate and organics. The source apportionment indicated that organic aerosol (OA) was a mixture from local sources (biomass burning (BBOA), traffic, coffee roaster (CROA)), secondary compounds formed in local wintertime conditions (nitrogen containing OA (NOA), semivolatile oxygenated OA (SV-OOA), and regional and long-range transported compounds (low volatile oxygenated OA, LV-OOA). BBOA was dominated by the fragments C2H4O2+ and C3H4O2+ (m/z 60.021 and 73.029) from levoglucosan, or other similar sugar components, comprising on average 32% of the BBOA mass concentration. The ratio between fragments C2H4O2+/C3H4O2+ was significantly lower for CROA (=1.1) when compared to BBOA (=2.1), indicating that they consisted of different sugar compounds. In addition, a component containing substantial amount of nitrogen compounds (NOA) was observed in a sub-arctic region for the first time. The NOA contribution to OA ranged from 1% to 29% and elevated concentrations were observed when ambient relative humidity was high and the visibility low. Low solar radiation and temperature in wintertime were observed to influence the oxidation of compounds. A change in aerosol composition, with an increase of LV-OOA and decrease in BBOA, SV-OOA and NOA was noticed during the transition from wintertime to springtime. Size distribution measurements with high-time resolution enabled chemical characterization of externally mixed aerosol from different sources. Aged regional long-range transported aerosols were dominant at around 0.5 μm (vacuum aerodynamic diameter), whereas traffic and CROA emissions dominated at around 120 nm. Oxidation flow reactors (OFRs) allow the concentration of a given atmospheric oxidant to be increased beyond ambient levels in order to study secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation and aging over varying periods of equivalent aging by that oxidant. Previous studies have used these reactors to determine the bulk OA mass and chemical evolution. To our knowledge, no OFR study has focused on the interpretation of the evolving aerosol size distributions. In this study, we use size-distribution measurements of the OFR and an aerosol microphysics model to learn about size-dependent processes in the OFR. Specifically, we use OFR exposures between 0.09 and 0.9 equivalent days of OH aging from the 2011 BEACHON-RoMBAS and GoAmazon2014/5 field campaigns. We use simulations in the TOMAS (TwO-Moment Aerosol Sectional) microphysics box model to constrain the following parameters in the OFR: (1) the rate constant of gas-phase functionalization reactions of organic compounds with OH, (2) the rate constant of gas-phase fragmentation reactions of organic compounds with OH, (3) the reactive uptake coefficient for heterogeneous fragmentation reactions with OH, (4) the nucleation rate constants for three different nucleation schemes, and (5) an effective accommodation coefficient that accounts for possible particle diffusion limitations of particles larger than 60nm in diameter. We find the best model-to-measurement agreement when the accommodation coefficient of the larger particles (Dp>60nm) was 0.1 or lower (with an accommodation coefficient of 1 for smaller particles), which suggests a diffusion limitation in the larger particles. When using these low accommodation-coefficient values, the model agrees with measurements when using a published H2SO4-organics nucleation mechanism and previously published values of rate constants for gas-phase oxidation reactions. Further, gas-phase fragmentation was found to have a significant impact upon the size distribution, and including fragmentation was necessary for accurately simulating the distributions in the OFR. The model was insensitive to the value of the reactive uptake coefficient on these aging timescales. Monoterpenes and isoprene could explain 24%-95% of the observed change in total volume of aerosol in the OFR, with ambient semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) appearing to explain the remainder of the change in total volume. These results provide support to the mass-based findings of previous OFR studies, give insight to important size-distribution dynamics in the OFR, and enable the design of future OFR studies focused on new particle formation and/or microphysical processes., United States.
