α-Sialon ceramics are mostly known for high-temperature and high-endurance applications due to their ability to withstand high structural load and their excellent chemical and thermal stability. Here we demonstrate functional α-Sialon ceramics with photon upconversion properties. Intense visible and near-infrared upconversion photoluminescence is observed in Yb3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ doped α-Sialon ceramics prepared by hot press sintering. Clear evidence of α-Sialon formation with the incorporation of Yb3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ ions in the lattice has been established. Emission bands at 498 nm, 551 nm, 662 nm and 802 nm are observed as a result of the two-photon absorption process. The decay behavior of the emission bands suggests the existence of efficient energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tm3+ ions. The possibility of temperature sensing properties has been investigated via high-power laser excitation. These findings could possibly extend the usefulness of Yb3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ doped α-Sialon as an upconversion phosphor material.

Wide visible light emitting Sialon phosphor ceramic plates (PCPs) have been reported for Eu 2+ doped, and Gd 3+ and Pr 3+ co-doped systems fabricated by hot press sintering technique. The phase dependent luminescence for Eu 2+ doped PCPs is also presented in this work. Intense greenish-yellow luminescence at 552 nm wavelength under blue light excitation with the highest luminous efficacy of 58.78 lm/W was observed for β-Sialon PCP. Whereas, α-Sialon phase containing PCPs with Eu 2+ show orange luminescence at 590 nm wavelength under 460 nm wavelength excitation. The co-doping of Gd 3+ with Eu 2+ cations enhance the α-Sialon phase as well as transparency and even with a minimum content of Eu 2 O 3 (2 wt%) shows intense orange luminescence with luminous efficacy of 46.10 lm/W which is the highest among the orange emitting PCPs. The Gd 3+ co-doped with Pr 3+ without Eu 2+ PCP shows wide visible emission from cyan to red excited by 460 nm wavelength. Further, Gd 3+ and Pr 3+ were co-doped with Eu 2+ shows orange emission with a red shoulder emission. The PCPs coupled with 450 nm blue LED produces cool white light, day light and warm light corresponding to their phases and co-dopants.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been emerging as a potential alternative to photovoltaic devices, which convert incident light into electric energy. However, the power conversion efficiency of DSSCs is currently too low for them to be used in commercial applications. Hence, further improvements in efficiency are necessary. Here, we have designed a DSSC with a double-layer structure, in which the top layer consists of a mixture of TiO2-P25 and Cr-doped TiO2 nanotubes (Cr-TNTs). Based on analyses using photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we have demonstrated the effect of Cr-TNTs on the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. A photoconversion efficiency (ɳ) of 11.05% was obtained by using the Cr-doped TiO2 material as compared to 9.05% for the un-doped TiO2 nanotubes.

In general, the methods for measuring human emotion are divided in two categories, one is the psychological way based on user's subjective evaluation and the other is the physiological way based on physiological signals. However, these methods have some well known limitations. In this research we suggested the methods for measuring user's emotion in the natural and accessible environment for the design field. In order to observe user’s emotional changes while they interact with a product, the video-debriefing and emotion logging program “VideoTAME” was developed as an effective measurement tool for complementing the current psychological methods. In the Testing Module of VideoTAME, subjects engagedin ‘Video-Debriefing’ after usability testing: They evaluate their emotional changes through playing and watching the video clips of their performing tasks in the experiment room. In the Analyzing Module, the researchers replay the results created by subjects during the experiment and analyze the results using Microsoft Excel. It is hoped that this study will be of great help for designers for effective measurement of user’s emotions naturally expressed while using a product.
