Until the years 1945–1946, Uničov and its surrounding area were a region with a predominately ethic German population, which was why the local archaeology, born in 1928 under the auspices of the local Town Museum, was almost exclusively German. Fortunately, the complete archive with documentation of all excavations from the era of its ‘golden age’ has survived to this day and has been digitised in recent years. With the help of period photographs and materials from this unique archive, the book narrates the history of Uničov archaeology, which is closely linked to Mizzi Manethová, one of the ‘first ladies’ of Moravian archaeology. The story is enhanced by a comprehensive overview of sites from individual cadastres in the former judicial district of Uničov, some of which are introduced through their own tales of discovery.

A dual-output thin-disk picosecond laser operating at 100 W with 1 kHz repetition rate is reported in this Letter. By electronically adjusting the amplitude of the optical seed pulses that are injected into the laser cavity, the energy extracted from the gain medium can be shared between two pulses. Amplified double pulses are subsequently spatially separated into two independent beams by a fast Pockels cell, compressed in one common compressor, and frequency-doubled with ∼70% efficiency. This approach significantly decreases strain on the optics, as well as nonlinear effects, and is advantageous for power scaling.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of postural trunk muscle function is a critical component of clinical assessment in patients with musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Postural activation of the trunk muscles has been evaluated by various methods. This study evaluates the correlation between subjective assessment of postural trunk muscle function with an objective measurement of abdominal wall expansion. METHODS: Twenty-five healthy participants (16 women, 9 men, age 22.4 years) were assessed. The subjective assessment was performed by two experienced Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) clinicians evaluating the quality of trunk stabilization using five postural stability tests through palpation and observation. Interrater reliability was determined using an intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Objective measurement was performed using a new device (DNS Brace) which externally measures abdominal wall pressure. Spearman rank correlations were calculated for both palpation and observation measures with DNS Brace data. RESULTS: The interrater reliability (ICC2,k) estimates demonstrated moderate reliability in palpation measures for three DNS tests: Hip flexion test, Diaphragm test, & Intra-abdominal pressure regulation test (IAPRT) (ICC = 0.645-0.707). For observation measures, good reliability was found in IAPRT (ICC = 0.835), and three tests demonstrated moderate reliability: Hip flexion test, Diaphragm test, & Breathing Stereotype (ICC = 0.577-0.695). Correlation analysis demonstrated several moderate to strong correlations between palpation and DNS brace values (Assessor 1): IAPRT, r(s) = 0.580, p = 0.002, Diaphragm test, r(s) = 0.543, p = 0.005, (Assessor 2): IAPRT, r(s) = 0.776, p < 0.001, Breathing Stereotype, r(s) = 0.625, p = 0.001, Diaphragm test, r(s) = 0.519, p = 0.008, Hip Flexion test, r(s) = 0.536, p = 0.006, and Arm Elevation test, r(s) = 0.460, p = 0.021. For observation, several moderate correlations were demonstrated with DNS brace values (Assessor 1): Arm Elevation test, r(s) = 0.472, p = 0.017, (Assessor 2) Diaphragm test, r(s) = 0.540, p = 0.005, IAPRT r(s) = 0.475, p = 0.016, Hip Flexion test, r(s) = 0.485, p = 0.014, and Arm Elevation, r(s) = 0.451, p = 0.024. CONCLUSION: Based on inter-rater reliability and DNS brace correlations with trained DNS professionals, the IAPRT, Diaphragm test, and Hip Flexion test may prove useful when assessing asymptomatic individuals. More research is needed in order to establish the utility of DNS brace and clinical testing both in asymptomatic and back pain populations. DNS tests must be supplemented by further examinations for definitive clinical decision making.

Context Opencast mining of minerals has a considerable impact on the landscape and local ecosystems including bird communities. Suitable landscape restoration methods can replace habitats lost due to mining activities. Objectives Our study aimed to identify how factors such as restoration management, spatial distribution and vegetation characteristics of restored habitats can affect the risk of bird nest predation. Methods In 2018 and 2019 we conducted a field experiment using 726 artificial ground bird nests installed on four spoil heaps and in the surrounding landscape of North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin in the Czech Republic. Results Nests on the post-mining sites suffered from a significantly higher risk of predation (75.4%) than nests in the surrounding landscape (60.3%), especially on technically reclaimed sites (71.8%) compared to near-natural habitats (64.7%). A generalized linear mixed model confirmed a statistically significant impact of horizontally more heterogeneous but vertically not very diversified vegetation cover of the site on a higher risk of predation of nests installed both inside and outside post-mining sites. The risk of predation of nests adjacent to the spoil heaps decreased with increasing distance of the nest from the heap. Conclusions We consider spoil heaps as centres and sources of nest predation. We interpret the significant impact of the vegetation structure on risk of predation as result of post-mining rehabilitation approach. The higher risk of nest predation on post-mining sites reflected the character of technically reclaimed habitats. We recommend a greater extent of natural restoration methods in current rehabilitation policy.

Thin disk regenerative amplifiers have suitable characteristics to pump picosecond OPCPA. By optimizing the trigger pulse to the MZM, a dual-output laser operating at 100 W, 1 kHz repetition rate, compressed to the transform limit is reported.

We report on the progress in developing a high energy, 1 kHz OPCPA auxiliary laser (F-SYNC) which is intended to supplement the L1-Allegra beamline. The auxiliary pulses are synchronized to the main laser with femtosecond precision and arbitrary delay.

We report on the performance improvements of the L1 Allegra laser system. The pump laser upgrade with the thin-disk multipass amplifier allows for the energy ramp-up, while a newly developed synchronized auxiliary laser system provides the capability of the pump-probe experiments at arbitrary delays.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal dysfunction (ARD), especially bowel incontinence, frequently compromises the quality of life in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The effect of rehabilitation procedures has not been clearly established. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of an individualized rehabilitation approach on bowel incontinence and anorectal pressures. METHODS: MS patients with ARD underwent 6-months of individually targeted biofeedback rehabilitation. High resolution anorectal manometry (HRAM) and St. Mark’s Fecal Incontinence Scores (SMIS) were completed prior to rehabilitation, after 10 weeks of supervised physiotherapy, and after 3 months of self-treatment. RESULTS: Ten patients (50%) completed the study. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated significant improvement in the SMIS questionnaire over time [14.00 baseline vs. 9.70 after supervised physiotherapy vs. 9.30 after self-treatment (p = 0.005)]. No significant improvements over time were noted in any HRAM readings: maximal pressure [49.85 mmHg baseline vs. 57.60 after supervised physiotherapy vs. 60.88 after self-treatment (p = 0.58)], pressure endurance [36.41 vs. 46.89 vs. 49.95 (p = 0.53)], resting pressure [55.83, vs 52.69 vs. 51.84 (p = 0.704)], or area under the curve [230.0 vs. 520.8 vs. 501.9 (p = 0.16)]. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed individualized rehabilitation program supports a positive overall effect on anorectal dysfunction in MS patients.

We report on a 1 kHz, 515 nm laser system, based on a commercially available 230 W average power Yb:YAG thin-disk regenerative amplifier, developed for pumping one of the last optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) stages of the Allegra laser system at ELI Beamlines. To avoid problems with self-focusing of picosecond pulses, the 1030 nm output pulses are compressed and frequency doubled with an LBO crystal in vacuum. Additionally, development of a thermal management system was needed to ensure stable phase matching conditions at high average power. The resulting 515 nm pulses have an energy of more than 120 mJ with SHG efficiency of 60% and an average RMS stability of 1.1% for more than 8 h.

The L1 Allegra is an OPCPA-based, high average power, high repetition rate laser system pumped by thin-disc based regenerative amplifiers currently under development at the ELI-Beamlines center in Czech Republic. The repetition rate is 1 kHz, pulse duration is below 15 fs and the wavelength centered around 820 nm with a maximum design pulse energy of 100 mJ. To avoid problems with self-focusing, a large portion of the system was placed inside vacuum, including the compressors and second-harmonic crystals for the last three 1030 nm pump lasers, the final three OPA stages, and the chirped mirror compressor. In order to reach the designed output energy of the whole system, the pump lasers need to be efficient, stable, and providing enough pump power for each of the amplification stages. Pulse compression of the final three pump lasers as well as efficient conversion to the second harmonic frequency in vacuum has posed several challenges and we report on their solutions and results. The vacuum environment causes difficulties for two main reasons. The first one is laser-induced-contamination (LIC) degrading the optical surfaces of dielectric gratings, mirrors and crystals, due to the presence of degassing components contaminating the vacuum chambers. The second reason is second-harmonic generation crystal mounts heating up, requiring regular phase matching corrections by rotation of the crystal mounts. The LIC problem was solved by regular cleaning of the chambers by means of an RF-plasma source, and the heating problem was solved by implementing active temperature stabilization by means of installing thermo-electric coolers on the crystal holders. To increase the efficiency of the second-harmonic generation, beam profiles of the pump lasers had to be improved. The original Faraday rotators, present in the linearly-designed regenerative amplifiers, caused non-Gaussian beam profiles due to the self focusing inside the rotators. By using KTF crystals inside a new type of rotators, the spatial profile of the pump lasers is more Gaussian, allowing the efficiency of the SHG to be higher, almost by 25%. All the solved problems recently allowed the system to reach a short pulse output energy of 56 mJ, paving a way to reach 100 mJ successfuly in the future.

Vacuum chambers are frequently used in high-energy, high-peak-power laser systems to prevent deleterious nonlinear effects, which can result from propagation in air. In the vacuum sections of the Allegra laser system at ELI-Beamlines, we observed degradation of several optical elements due to laser-induced contamination (LIC). This contamination is present on surfaces with laser intensity above 30 G W / c m 2 with wavelengths of 515, 800, and 1030 nm. It can lead to undesired absorption on diffraction gratings, mirrors, and crystals and ultimately to degradation of the laser beam profile. Because the Allegra laser is intended to be a high-uptime source for users, such progressive degradation is unacceptable for operation. Here, we evaluate three methods of removing LIC from optics in vacuum. One of them, the radio-frequency-generated plasma cleaning, appears to be a suitable solution from the perspective of operating a reliable, on-demand source for users.

The setup of Symbiotic 8 for Test-Comp 2021 brings radical changes in the test generation for property. Similarly as in Symbiotic 7, we generate tests by running our fork of symbolic executor Klee on the analyzed program. Symbiotic 8, however, runs several instances of Klee in parallel. We run one instance of Klee on the original program and, simultaneously, we create one (intentionally unsound) program slice for every program-terminating instruction in the program and run Klee on these slices. Apart from this principal change, we also improved other components of the tool, mainly the program slicer. Further, our fork of Klee now supports symbolic pointer arithmetics and comparison of symbolic addresses.

Symbiotic 8 extends the traditional combination of static analyses, instrumentation, program slicing, and symbolic execution with one substantial novelty, namely a technique mixing symbolic execution with k-induction. This technique can prove the correctness of programs with possibly unbounded loops, which cannot be done by classic symbolic execution.Symbiotic 8 delivers also several other improvements. In particular, we have modified our fork of the symbolic executorKleeto support the comparison of symbolic pointers. Further, we have tuned the shape analysis toolPredator(integrated already inSymbiotic 7) to perform better onllvmbitcode. We have also developed a light-weight analysis of relations between variables that can prove the absence of out-of-bound accesses to arrays.

Stable picosecond supercontinuum generated in long crystals is an excellent means of seeding broadband, high-energy CPA systems. The generated output energy and spectrum can be almost three times as stable as the pump for a wide range of input pulse parameters. In this work, we show this is an intrinsic property for crystals longer than the filament and for a range of input energy values. We present a description of the stability mechanism in both the visible and infrared regions together with experimental data that support the theoretical explanation.

We present latest progress and experimental capabilities of user-oriented XUV beamline based on high harmonic generation (HHG). The focal length of the HHG was recently extended to 5 meters, upscaling the overall XUV photon flux.

We report on the current state of readiness of the 1 kHz, 15 fs L1 ALLEGRA laser system for long term reliable operation driving user experiments based on HHG. The highly automated system, based on short pulse OPCPA, currently generates pulses with energy of 30 mJ at central wavelength of 820 nm.

Does direct democracy lead to increased electoral turnout? Research in the United States has demonstrated this effect and proposed two reasons for it: (1) the process of being involved in direct political participation may educate citizens and lead to their increased long-term political engagement (this explanation draws on the theory of participatory democracy) and/or (2) underlying issues and competitive campaigning draw public interest and cause higher turnout, although this effect is election-specific and short term. Recent empirical findings overwhelmingly favor the latter hypothesis although both mechanisms seem to apply. However, research on this topic is made difficult by the fact that direct democracy and elections take place simultaneously in the United States, which makes it hard to disentangle the effects of each. We present a study from the Czech Republic where direct democracy is not tied to elections. We analyze the effects of local/municipality direct democracy and demonstrate that it leads to increased turnout in upcoming local and national elections. We demonstrate a strong effect sparked by competitive direct democracy campaigns as well as a relatively weak long-term institutional effect of direct democracy.

Three main paths are being developed within the ELI research program for transforming driving laser pulses into bursts of bright short wavelength radiation: high-order harmonic generation in gases, plasma X-ray sources and sources based on relativistic electron beams accelerated in laser plasma. For each of these research areas, dedicated beamlines are built to provide a unique combination of X-ray sources to the scientific community. The application of these beamlines has a well-defined balance between fundamental science and applications in different fields of science and technology. Here we summarize the current status of those user beamlines and we introduce new diagnostics devices developed within the implementation phase of the project, namely compact XUV spectrometer and beam profiler that is using only one fixed detector and an imaging Michelson interferometer with increased sensitivity for low density gas jet characterization.

We report on the status of the Allegra laser beamline currently being commissioned at the ELI-Beamlines facility. The beamline will be used to drive X-ray sources for research in material science, molecular physics, and biophysics, where a high repetition rate is essential. Designed for user operation, significant attention is given to stability, reliability, and automation of the system. A photo of the beamline is shown in Fig. 1(a).

The paper deals with the design and implementation of a system for monitoring the level of liquid in a remote reservoir without power supply from electric network. The hardware of the solution is based on Arduino Mega platform with GSM / GPRS sending data and level measurement using hydrostatic pressure gauge. An internet server is used to collect data in a database and to present data to users in a form of web pages. The work focuses on high precision, low power consumption and low cost of the final system. The paper describes the developed hardware and software. The paper also present testing of the system in real conditions.

The Allegra femtosecond laser system is the main driver for high harmonic and plasma x-ray secondary sources at ELI-Beamlines operating at a 1 kHz rep rate. The system is based on OPCPA technology and consists of seven amplification stages pumped by thin-disk picosecond lasers. It is designed to reach 30 mJ output in the first phase of operation and to be ramped up to 50 mJ by engaging an additional pump laser. The amplified pulse is compressed to sub-20fs by an array of chirped mirrors and higher order dispersion is pre-compensated for by a Dazzler AOPDF in the front-end. In this paper we present the overview of Allegra system and the current status of deployment with a special focus on the high average power OPCPA in vacuum.

A passive peak intensity stabilization method based on optimal combination of Kerr nonlinearity and linear dispersion is presented. By analyzing the Kerr nonlinearity with a 3D numerical model it was found that if a Gaussian laser pulse acquires a certain amount of nonlinear phase and is consequently over-compressed to have sight negative chirp, the uctuations in peak intensity caused by energy uctuations are reduced. Thus, even if the energy of laser pulses uctuates the peak intensity can be stabilized. The simulations for realistic pulse parameters show an increase in peak intensity stability by well-over an order of magnitude. We report on the status of the Allegra laser beamline, which is designed to provide ub-20 fs pulses with tens of mJ of energy with exceptionally high contrast at a 1 kHz repetition rate.

We discuss the performance of several stages of high energy, high average power SHG and OPCPA with picosecond pulses in vacuum as part of the ALLEGRA laser at ELI-Beamlines.

We measure parameters of a stable supercontinuum generated in long YAG crystal, driven by 3 ps pulses at 1030 nm and evaluate the impact of initial conditions on supercontinuum stability.

Despite a rich body of literature dealing with suburbanization across Central and East Europe, the issues of crime and safety in residential suburbs have not been addressed. At the same time it is obvious that the existing knowledge on suburban crime derived mainly from Western experience cannot be simply transferred to the post-socialist transition context. This research investigates the issues of crime and safety in new residential neighbourhoods in the hinterland of Prague, the Czech Republic. Suburbanites’ fear of crime and feeling of safety are discussed in the context of registered crime patterns in the Prague metropolitan region. The research draws on data gathered in a questionnaire survey of newcomers to suburban housing. The findings confirm the generally high feelings of safety in low-crime suburban districts. Our analysis further showed that age, previous victimization and length of residency are the main determinants of fear of crime in Prague’s suburban communities.

The paper presents process of modelling of the CE108 Coupled Drives Apparatus developed by TecQuipment Ltd. This laboratory plant serves as a laboratory equipment representing a problem of modelling and control of producing continuous lengths materials, which is common in many industrial applications. A mathematical model based on the first principle modelling, which was created by designers of the plant, is used as a starting point. The characteristics of this initial model is compared with real-time measurements and the model is improved. Simulink representation of the model is designed and verified. The Simulink model is suitable for designing and verifying various control strategies not only for the CE108 Coupled Drives Apparatus but in general for similar industrial processes.

In the paper model of cogeneration plant with heat storage was developed for investigating the potential of implementing the heat storage. The model is used within the operation optimization to maximize the revenue from power sales. Receding horizon of 7 days is used for operational planning resulting in linear optimization problem. The method is used to evaluate the benefit of different sized storages using the real-life heat demand data for Malenovice district in Czech Republic and day-ahead electricity prices for a one-year horizon. The results show that the revenue from power sales can be significantly improved by shifting operation to the most commercially feasible points in time.

For most extreme light applications, a reliable and stable driver laser is crucial to successful experiments. As lasers grow in energy and peak power they become increasingly complex and more failure modes are introduced to the system as a whole. For this reason it is prudent to develop a laser with simplicity, repeatability, and durability in mind. With the wide commercial availability of high quality, inexpensive fiber components, much of the required pulse conditioning for seeding high energy laser systems can take place entirely in fiber. This allows for much of the laser front end to be compact, alignment-free, and computer controlled with potentially dramatic savings in cost and space on the optical table. Here we explore some of the current trends in fiberbased front ends for high peak power laser systems. The requirements for any given high peak power laser are always quite different and fiber front ends are enormously customizable, so here we present two basic versions of fiber front ends which are used at the ELI-Beamlines facility which resemble other common fiber front end architectures.

During the socialist era, inner residential areas of Eastern European cities were left to decay both physically and socially, and became mostly occupied by elderly inhabitants. Drawing on 2007–2011 EU-SILC data, we have analysed processes of socio-spatial differentiation in the inner cities of Prague and Tallinn during the post-socialist era, and indicate the household-level drivers of such differentiation. We found a high preference for inner city living among young people and childless households, but also the persisting patterns of elderly population in some inner city sub-areas. A weak correlation between household socio-economic status and place of residence in the inner city, however, suggests that inner cities continued to be socially mixed in the late 2000s, although differences existed in this regard between sub-areas and between the two studied cities. To a large extent, such differentiation relates to the roots found within socialist and pre-socialist legacies, but it also contains new post-socialist features, such as those created by different social and housing policies applied during the post-socialist reforms.

The adenylate cyclase toxin (CyaA) of the whooping cough agent Bordetella pertussis subverts immune functions of host myeloid cells expressing the αMβ2 integrin (CD11b/CD18, CR3 or Mac-1). CyaA delivers into cytosol of cells an extremely catalytically active adenylyl cyclase enzyme, which disrupts the innate and adaptive immune functions of phagocytes through unregulated production of the key signaling molecule cAMP. We have used phosphoproteomics to analyze cAMP signaling of CyaA in murine bone marrow-derived dendritic cells. CyaA action resulted in alterations of phosphorylation state of a number of proteins that regulate actin cytoskeleton homeostasis, including Mena, Talin-1 and VASP. CyaA action repressed mTOR signaling through activation of mTORC1 inhibitors TSC2 and PRAS40 and altered phosphorylation of multiple chromatin remodelers, including the class II histone deacetylase HDAC5. CyaA toxin action further elicited inhibitory phosphorylation of SIK family kinases involved in modulation of immune response and provoked dephosphorylation of the transcriptional coactivator CRTC3, indicating that CyaA-promoted nuclear translocation of CRTC3 may account for CyaA-induced IL-10 production. These findings document the complexity of subversive physiological manipulation of myeloid phagocytes by the CyaA toxin, serving in immune evasion of the pertussis agent.

Large laser systems that deliver optical pulses with peak powers exceeding one Petawatt (PW) have been constructed at dozens of research facilities worldwide and have fostered research in High-Energy-Density (HED) Science, High-Field and nonlinear physics [1]. Furthermore, the high intensities exceeding 1018W/cm2 allow for efficiently driving secondary sources that inherit some of the properties of the laser pulse, e.g. pulse duration, spatial and/or divergence characteristics. In the intervening decades since that first PW laser, single-shot proof-of-principle experiments have been successful in demonstrating new high-intensity laser-matter interactions and subsequent secondary particle and photon sources. These secondary sources include generation and acceleration of charged-particle (electron, proton, ion) and neutron beams, and x-ray and gamma-ray sources, generation of radioisotopes for positron emission tomography (PET), targeted cancer therapy, medical imaging, and the transmutation of radioactive waste [2, 3]. Each of these promising applications requires lasers with peak power of hundreds of terawatt (TW) to petawatt (PW) and with average power of tens to hundreds of kW to achieve the required secondary source flux.

Overview of progress in construction and testing of the laser systems of ELI-Beamlines, accomplished since 2015, is presented. Good progress has been achieved in construction of all four lasers based largely on the technology of diode-pumped solid state lasers (DPSSL). The first part of the L1 laser, designed to provide 200 mJ

We have demonstrated the world's highest average power, fully diode-pumped, petawatt-class peak power laser, the High-repetition-rate Advanced Petawatt Laser System (HAPLS) [1-3]. These first commissioning results at 16J (stretched) at 3%Hz fully validate projected performance of 30J/30fs (>1PW) at 10Hz. The laser has been operated at this intermediate level at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to demonstrate integrated performance of all subsystems and provide benchmarking data to laser performance models before further increasing energy and peak power. Data was obtained during multiple campaigns, exceeding several hours of run time, and a snapshot of 60min of data is shown in Fig. 1. The average pump laser 1ω (1053nm) energy was 97J with an rms stability of 0.7%, 2ω (527nm) energy at the Ti:sapphire power amplifier was 62J, and the average stretched short pulse energy was 16J. A full-aperture diagnostic suite allows simultaneous, single-shot measurement of energy, spectrum, beam quality, and pulse duration at full repetition rate. Single-shot SPIDER retrieved pulse shapes (Fig. 1 inset) with an average pulse duration over 12000 consecutive shots of 28.6fs (rms=1.4fs). The mean pulse duration is consistent with the measured spectral bandwidth and is ∼1.2× the transform limit. All results shown are raw data without filtering or averaging, demonstrating the exceptional pulse characteristics, repeatability, and stability of the entire laser system.

We report on the status of the high repetition rate, high energy, L1 laser beamline at the ELI-Beamlines facility. The beamline is based on picosecond optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) of pulses from a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire oscillator and has a target energy/repetition rate of 100 mJ/1 kHz with < 15fs pulse duration. The OPCPA pump lasers use thin disk technology to achieve the high energy and average power required to pump such a high energy, high repetition rate broadband amplifier. Here we report on the progress in beamline development and discuss the technical challenges involved in producing such a system and their solutions. A major focus of the laser development is reliable, robust operation and long term stability; mechanical, optical, and control system architecture design considerations to achieve our goals of long term stability are discussed.

We present an active cavity pointing stabilization system based on a novel method that tracks the cavity mode position directly on the thin disk gain medium itself. Here, the overlap of the lasing cavity with the pump, visible as a depletion within the pumped area, is most crucial to the stability of the laser. Short term stability as well as long term stability are significantly increased enabling day long operation, directly from a cold start of the laser system, without the need for thermalization and manual alignment.

We present a stable supercontinuum (SC) generated in a bulk YAG crystal, pumped by 3 ps chirped pulses at 1030 nm. The SC is generated in a loose focus geometry in a 13 cm long YAG crystal, allowing for stable and robust single-filament generation. The SC energy stability exceeds that of the pump laser by almost a factor of 3. Additionally, we show that the SC spectrum has long-term stability and that the SC is coherent and compressible by compressing the portions of SC spectra close to the corresponding Fourier limit. This makes the picosecond-pulse-driven SC a suitable stable seed for OPCPA amplifiers.

We report on the design and performance of a fiber-based, multi-channel laser amplifier seed pulse distribution system. The device is designed to condition and distribute low energy laser pulses from a mode-locked oscillator to multiple, highly synchronized, high energy amplifiers integrated into a laser beamline. Critical functions such as temporal pulse stretching well beyond 100 ps/nm, pulse picking, and fine control over the pulse delay up to 300 ps are all performed in fiber eliminating the need for bulky and expensive grating stretchers, Pockels cells, and delay lines. These functions are characterized and the system as a whole is demonstrated by seeding two high energy amplifiers in the laser beamline. The design of this system allows for complete computer control of all functions, including tuning of dispersion, and is entirely hands-free. The performance of this device and its subsystems will be relevant to those developing lasers where reliability, size, and cost are key concerns in addition to performance; this includes those developing large-scale laser systems similar to ours and also those developing table-top experiments and commercial systems.

We present a stable supercontinuum generation in a YAG crystal, driven by 3 ps pulses at 1030 nm. The supercontinuum is demonstrated to be coherent and compressible by Dazzler and prism compressor to below 15 fs.

The HAPLS laser system has been commissioned to its first integrated performance milestone, delivering laser pulses with 16J sub-30fs duration at a 3⅓Hz repetition rate. This first all-diode-pumped petawatt-class laser offers the average powers required for secondary source applications.

This paper deals with modeling and control of a hydraulic three-tank system. A process of creating a computer model in the MATLAB/Simulink environment is described, and optimal PID (proportional-integral-derivative) and model predictive controllers are proposed. The modeling starts with the creation of an initial mathematical model based on a first-principles approach. Then, the initial model is enhanced to obtain better correspondence with a real-time system, and parameters of the modified system are identified from measurements. The real-time system contains nonlinearities which cannot be neglected, and therefore are identified and included in the final mathematical model. The resulting model is used for a control design. As the real-time system has long time constants, usage of the Simulink model dramatically speeds up the design process. Optimal PID and model predictive controllers (MPC) are proposed and compared. Model predictive controllers for both a linearized model and the nonlinear system are proposed. The techniques described are not limited to one particular modeling problem, but can be used as an illustrative example for the modeling of many technological processes.
