A sensitive thin film thermometer has been developed which can measure local transient surface temperatures without appreciably affecting flow of heat or fluid in the vicinity. By means of techniques used in microminiaturization, the thermometers can be deposited at close spacings. This note describes the manufacture of such instruments and discusses their sensitivity, frequency response and reliability.

Studies have been conducted on an Air Cushion Landing System for the Australian Jindivik target drone aircraft. Analyses are presented of the airflow and yaw thruster control systems, and the vehicle stability with a deployed recovery trunk is assessed. The vehicle touchdown and slideout on a recovery trunk are presented, and the design of an improved retention/release system is shown. (Author)

[Dimethylamino(phenyl)carbene]pentacarbonylchromium, (CO)5CrC(Ph)NMe2, decomposes at 135° C in nitrogen to yield cis-(PhCH.NMe2)2Cr(CO)4. Attempted preparations of (PhCH.NMe2)2by methylation of meso-stilbenediamine were unsuccessful. The mode of formation of (PhCH·NMe2)2 from the heterocarbenoid precursor is discussed.Related complexes of the type cis-(vic-diamine)Cr(CO)4, in which the vic-diamine is Me2N·CHR1·CHR2·NMe2(R1= R2= H; R1= Me, R2= H; R1= R2= Me), o-C6H4(NMe2)2, or (RCH.NH2)2(R = Me, Ph) are reported and the importance of steric effects in these complexes has been assessed by spectroscopic methods, Pure NNN′N′-tetramethyl-meso-butane-2,3-diamine has been fully characterised.

The reactions of 1,1-diphenylethylene and dimethyl fumarate with the carbene complexes, [(CO)5CrC(X)Fc](X = OMe or NC4H8, Fc = ferrocenyl) at 136° in a nitrogen atmosphere are described. Although the methoxy-compound reacts with dimethyl fumarate to give a 1-ferrocenyl-1-methoxycyclopropane derivative in 50% yield, the pyrrolidinyl compound reacts with dimethyl fumarate to give dimethyl 5-[ferrocenyl(pyrrolidin-1-yl)methyl]-3,4-bis-methoxycarbonylhex-2-enedioate (32%) and with 1,1-diphenylethylene to give 3-ferrocenyl-1,1,5,5-tetraphenyl-3-pyrrolidin-1-ylpent-1-ene (7%). The course of these reactions is discussed briefly and it is suggested that they are not consistent with the participation of a free carbene species, Fc(X)C:. The intervention of zwitterionic intermediates in the reactions of aminocyclopropanes is considered.
