Leaf spot is a common and serious disease of sweet cherry worldwide and has become a major concern in China. From 2018 to 2020, disease investigations were carried out in Beijing City, Sichuan, Shandong, and Liaoning Provinces in China, and 105 Colletotrichum isolates were obtained from diseased samples. Isolates were identified by morphological characterization coupled with multigene phylogenetic analyses based on six loci (internal transcribed spacer region, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, calmodulin, actin, chitin synthase, and β-tubulin). A total of 13 Colletotrichum species were identified, namely Colletotrichum aenigma, C. gloeosporioides, C. fructicola, C. siamense, C. temperatum, C. conoides, C. hebeiense, C. sojae, C. plurivorum, C. karsti, C. truncatum, C. incanum, and C. dematium. Among these, C. aenigma (25.7%) was the most prominent species isolated from diseased leaves, followed by C. gloeosporioides (19.0%) and C. fructicola (12.4%). Pathogenicity was tested on detached leaves of cv. ‘Tieton’ and ‘Summit’ and young seedlings of cv. ‘Brooks’ under greenhouse conditions. All 13 species were pathogenic to cherry leaves, and C. aenigma, C. conoides, and C. dematium showed high levels of virulence. Seedlings inoculated with the isolates developed similar symptoms to those seen in the orchards. This study provides the first reports for 11 of the 13 Colletotrichum species on sweet cherry in the world, excluding C. aenigma and C. fructicola. This is the first comprehensive study of Colletotrichum species associated with cherry leaf spot in China, and the results will provide basic knowledge to develop sustainable control measures for cherry leaf spot.

The label 'Stop' potentially generates conflict-signifying important corrective action, or a warning not to touch. To examine potential conflict between an incongruent label (i.e. STOP) and an imperative command (i.e. MOVE!), 18 participants used a computer mouse to move a crosshair cursor to targets with superimposed labels. Trials systematically varied Imperative (blank or MOVE!), Label (+GO + or STOP) and movement Distance. Kinematic analyses examined response latency, movement duration and accuracy. Incongruent labels had little impact upon response latencies, but they affected cursor deceleration and the variability of cursor placement. Although reading is assumed to be obligatory, the impact of written labels is not immediate, instead affecting cursor deceleration. Indeed, responses to controls labelled STOP were less accurate than those labelled + GO+. As labelled interfaces can create error versus command confusions, enhancing the discriminability of controls to afford more obvious visible cues as to method of use is recommended.

Later circadian timing of energy intake is associated with higher body fat percentage. Current methods for obtaining accurate circadian timing are labor- and cost-intensive, limiting practical application of this relationship. This study investigated whether the timing of energy intake relative to a mathematically modeled circadian time, derived from easily collected ambulatory data, would differ between participants with a lean or overweight/obesity body fat percentage.Participants (N = 87) wore a light- and activity-measuring device (actigraph) throughout a cross-sectional 30-day study. For 7 consecutive days within these 30 days, participants used a time-stamped-picture phone application to record energy intake. Body fat percentage was recorded. Circadian time was defined using melatonin onset from in-laboratory collected repeat saliva sampling or using light and activity or activity data alone entered into a mathematical model.Participants with overweight/obesity body fat percentages ate 50% of their daily calories significantly closer to model-predicted melatonin onset from light and activity data (0.61 hours closer) or activity data alone (0.86 hours closer; both log-rank p 0.05).Use of mathematically modeled circadian timing resulted in similar relationships between the timing of energy intake and body composition as that observed using in-laboratory collected metrics. These findings may facilitate use of circadian timing in time-based interventions.

BackgroundSubjective tinnitus is a common symptom, and there is often an underlying otological cause. This study investigated the degree of tinnitus-related annoyance in patients with chronic otitis media and analysed whether associations with tinnitus severity exist.MethodThe multinational collaborative Chronic Otitis Media Questionnaire-12 study collected prospective data on 478 adult patients suffering from chronic otitis media across 9 otology referral centres in 8 countries. Based on this dataset, we investigated tinnitus severity using participant responses to item 7 of a native version of the Chronic Otitis Media Questionnaire-12.ResultsWith respect to tinnitus severity, 23.8 per cent, 17.4 per cent, 15.5 per cent, and 43.4 per cent of participants reported no, minor, moderate, and major inconvenience or greater, respectively. The absence of ear discharge, absence of cholesteatoma, and poorer disease-specific health-related quality-of-life were associated with increased tinnitus severity in patients with chronic otitis media, whereas age, hearing disability and geographical region showed no association.ConclusionThis analysis provided novel insight into potential risk factors for tinnitus in patients with chronic otitis media.

Species in Diaporthe are largely reported as important plant pathogens. Identification of species in this genus has been complemented by morphological and molecular features. However, one important factor delaying this process is the struggle to formulate robust species concepts to create adequate international phytosanitary measures. Regardless of the wide use of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA region, established as the primary DNA barcode for fungi, the tendency for intraspecific variation has been reported, misleading interpretation of phylogenetic analyses. Therefore, the present study aimed to illustrate, using specific examples, how the ITS region may be problematic for species delimitation. We showed that the ITS region is highly variable, with strains of Diaporthe malorum and Diaporthe novem falling into more than one clade, which if analyzed on their own, would be likely recognized as distinct taxa. Divergent ITS paralogs were also proven to coexist within the genome of D. novem. We also suggest that ITS may have escaped from concerted evolution or has undergone a duplication event. Furthermore, this study reports for the first time the existence of a putative hybrid in the genus Diaporthe. Our findings offer new clues towards the intraspecific and intragenomic variation in the ITS region, raising questions about its value for barcoding, i.e., identifying species in the genus Diaporthe. Therefore, we recommend that the ITS region be analyzed cautiously and always compared for congruence prior to description of novel taxa.

BACKGROUND Globally, high rates of maternal and infant mortality call for interventions during the perinatal period to engage pregnant women, and their loved ones, to ensure they remain in care. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies have become ubiquitous in our lives and healthcare settings and hold promise for improving maternal health outcomes. However, there is a need to further explore their safety and effectiveness to support and improve health outcomes, locally and globally. OBJECTIVE Review and synthesize published literature that described the development process or effectiveness evaluations of maternal/infant apps with a specific emphasis on determining the apps’ target population usage; evidence of outcomes with mothers, fathers, infants, or children; and whether the apps have been reviewed or endorsed by a healthcare provider. METHODS We used the scoping review approach originally described by Arksey and O’Malley, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) reporting guidelines, and Covidence review management software to enhance transparency in our approach to this scoping review study. RESULTS A total of 1027 were included in title and abstract screening. Full text screening commenced with 87 articles, 74 of which were excluded with reasons. Four articles were added at data extraction from hand searching. Ultimately, we reviewed and synthesized data from 11 unique studies reported in 23 articles, published between 2017 and 2021. Included studies represented 8 different countries. Most apps were English, although apps were also developed in Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, and Nepali. Articles reviewed revealed the early stage of development of the fields of maternal/infant apps with modest evidence of app usage and achievement of study outcomes. Only one app was endorsed by an independent healthcare provider society. App development and evaluation processes emerged and there specific app features have been identified as vital for well-functioning apps. End-user engagement occurred in some parts, but not all, of app research and development. CONCLUSIONS Apps to improve maternal/infant health are developed and launched in enormous numbers with many of them are not developed with mothers’ needs in mind. There are concerns about privacy, safety, and standardization of current apps and a need for professional or institution-specific guidelines or best practices. Despite challenges inherent in currently available apps and their design processes, maternal/infant app technology holds promise for achieving health equity goals and improving maternal child health outcomes. Finally, we propose recommendations for advancing the knowledge base for maternal/infant apps. CLINICALTRIAL Not applicable

Milk yields and their relationships with blood and milk metabolic parameters were assessed in 59 high-yielding Holstein cows over the course of their lactation to identify metabolic constraints to daily milk production. Over an 11 month lactation period the cows, which were milked thrice daily and fed a total mix ration, had a mean daily milk yield of 35.5 l. Blood parameters monitored were haematocrit (PCV), erythrocytes (RBC), leucocytes (WCC), hemoglobin, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, urea, protein, creatinine, triglycerides, cholesterol, magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), aspartates aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and glutamic gammatransferase (GGT). Stepwise regression indicated that blood haemoglobin concentration was most closely and positively correlated with milk yield, indicating that oxygen-carrying capacity was potentially a limit to milk production. Secondly, milk Na was negatively correlated with milk yield, and milk protein yield was negatively correlated with milk Mg, Ca and Na, demonstrating lack of homeostatic control of these elements in milk. Principal component analysis identified a primary metabonomic axis of hemoglobin and RBC concentrations at one end and blood K, Na and milk lactose at the other, which appeared related to milk production. A second axis was apparent of milk divalent cations at one end and monovalent cations at the other. It is concluded that constraints to milk production in high yielding cows may exist due to limited oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, as well as monovalent cations.

Background Light has powerful effects on mood, sleep, and the circadian system. Humans evolved in an environment with a clear distinction between day and night, but our modern environments have blurred this distinction. Negative effects of light exposure at night have been well characterized. The importance of daytime light exposure has been less well characterized. Here we examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of time spent in daytime outdoor light with mood, sleep, and circadian-related outcomes. Methods Participants were drawn from the UK Biobank cohort, a large study of UK adults (n = 502,000; 37–73 years old; 54% women). Results UK Biobank participants reported spending a median of 2.5 daylight hours (IQR = 1.5–3.5 h) outdoors per day. Each additional hour spent outdoors during the day was associated with lower odds of lifetime major depressive disorder (95% CI OR:0.92–0.98), antidepressant usage (OR:0.92–0.98), less frequent anhedonia (OR:0.93–0.96) and low mood (OR:0.87–0.90), greater happiness (OR:1.41–1.48) and lower neuroticism (incident rate ratio, IRR:0.95–0.96), independent of demographic, lifestyle, and employment covariates. In addition, each hour of daytime light was associated with greater ease of getting up (OR:1.46–1.49), less frequent tiredness (OR:0.80–0.82), fewer insomnia symptoms (OR:0.94–0.97), and earlier chronotype (adjusted odds ratio; OR:0.75–0.77). Auto-Regressive Cross-Lagged (ARCL) models were used to examine the longitudinal association of time spent in outdoor light at baseline with later mood-, sleep- and circadian-related outcomes reported at time point 2. Overall, longitudinal associations support cross-sectional findings, though generally with smaller effect sizes. Limitations Future studies that examine the intensity of daytime light exposure at the ocular level are needed. Conclusions Our findings suggest that low daytime light exposure is an important environmental risk factor for mood, sleep, and circadian-related outcomes.

Eucalyptus globulus, an exotic species in Portugal, is one of the dominant and intensively managed forest species in the country. A disease syndrome characterised by leaf necrosis, stem girdling and cutting dieback in eucalyptus and associated with pestalotioid fungi has been detected in nurseries and young plantations in the last years. Twenty-seven isolates were recovered from diseased plants. Phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacers, partial translation elongation factor 1-α gene and partial β-tubulin gene sequence data grouped the isolates in five separate clades. Combining morphological, cultural and molecular data, five new species of Neopestalotiopsis are described, namely, Neopestalotiopsis eucalyptorum, Neopestalotiopsis hispanica, Neopestalotiopsis iberica, Neopestalotiopsis longiappendiculata and Neopestalotiopsis lusitanica.

This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera incertae sedis are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. Fungal taxa described and illustrated in the present study include three new genera, 69 new species, one new combination, one reference specimen and 51 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions. Three new genera, Cylindrotorula (Torulaceae), Scolecoleotia (Leotiales genus incertae sedis) and Xenovaginatispora (Lindomycetaceae) are introduced based on distinct phylogenetic lineages and unique morphologies. The growing human and livestock populations in the world today and increased international transport of livestock is increasing the risk of both emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases. This review focuses on the potential for the live export trade to transmit zoonotic diseases. Both cattle and sheep are exposed to major stresses during the transport process, which are described, together with the impact of these stresses on the immune function of transported animals. Heat stress, overcrowding, inanition, ship and vehicle motion and accumulation of noxious gases are analysed for their ability to potentiate infectious diseases. The major zoonoses are described: pustular dermatitis, pneumonia, salmonellosis, as well as some common conditions, such as conjunctivitis, with specific reference to stressors associated with each disorder. Historical precedents exist for restriction of the trade based on disease risks. Finally, the economic and regulatory frameworks are considered to evaluate ways in which the spread of zoonotic diseases can be controlled.

Circadian rhythm disturbance is a common feature of many psychiatric disorders. Light is the primary input to the circadian clock, with daytime light strengthening rhythms and night light disrupting them. Therefore, habitual light exposure may represent an environmental risk factor for susceptibility to psychiatric disorders. We performed the largest to-date cross-sectional analysis of light, sleep, physical activity, and mental health (n= 86,772 adults; aged 62.4 ± 7.4 years; 57% women). We examined the independent association of day and night light exposure with covariate-adjusted risk for psychiatric disorders and self-harm. Greater night light exposure was associated with increased risk for major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, psychosis, bipolar disorder, and self-harm behavior. Independent of night light, greater day light exposure was associated with reduced risk for major depressive disorder, PTSD, psychosis, and self-harm behavior. These findings were robust to adjustment for sociodemographics, photoperiod, physical activity, and sleep quality. Avoiding light at night and seeking light during the day may be a simple and effective, non-pharmacological means of broadly improving mental health.

Pectus excavatum, carinatum, and arcuatum are 3 developmental chest wall deformities that may evolve during childhood and cause cardiac and/or pulmonary compression. Evaluation may include nonsurgical subspecialty consultations and imaging studies. Treatment may be nonoperative or surgical. Long-term follow-up studies have identified rare complications of traditional open repair. Routine in utero ultrasonography has led to increasing identification of congenital lung anomalies, including congenital cystic adenomatoid malformations, pulmonary sequestrations, and bronchogenic cysts. Short-term follow-up studies have suggested that some lesions may regress spontaneously. Minimally invasive techniques, including thoracoscopy, may allow for early surgical resection with less morbidity than traditional open surgery.

The field of targeted protein degradation (TPD) has grown exponentially over the past decade with the goal of developing therapies that mark proteins for destruction leveraging the ubiquitin-proteasome system. One common approach to achieve TPD is to employ a heterobifunctional molecule, termed as a degrader, to recruit the protein target of interest to the E3 ligase machinery. The resultant generation of an intermediary ternary complex (target-degrader-ligase) is pivotal in the degradation process. Understanding the ternary complex geometry offers valuable insight into selectivity, catalytic efficiency, linker chemistry, and rational degrader design. In this study, we utilize hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) to identify degrader-induced protein-protein interfaces. We then use these data in conjunction with constrained protein docking to build three-dimensional models of the ternary complex. The approach was used to characterize complex formation between the E3 ligase CRBN and the first bromodomain of BRD4, a prominent oncology target. We show marked differences in the ternary complexes formed in solution based on distinct patterns of deuterium uptake for two degraders, CFT-1297 and dBET6. CFT-1297, which exhibited positive cooperativity, altered the deuterium uptake profile revealing the degrader-induced protein-protein interface of the ternary complex. For CFT-1297, the ternary complexes generated by the highest scoring HDX-constrained docking models differ markedly from those observed in the published crystal structures. These results highlight the potential utility of HDX-MS to provide rapidly accessible structural insights into degrader-induced protein-protein interfaces in solution. They further suggest that degrader ternary complexes exhibit significant conformation flexibility and that biologically relevant complexes may well not exhibit the largest interaction surfaces between proteins. Taken together, the results indicate that methods capable of incorporating linker conformation uncertainty may prove an important component in degrader design moving forward. In addition, the development of scoring functions modified to handle interfaces with no evolved complementarity, for example, through consideration of high levels of water infiltration, may prove valuable. Furthermore, the use of crystal structures as validation tools for novel degrader methods needs to be considered with caution.

As aquaculture continues to grow and intensify, there is an increasing public concern over the welfare of farmed fish. Stress and production-related pathologies and repressed growth are examples of the challenges facing aquaculture, and their impacts could be minimised by effective identification of the early signs of impaired welfare. Many welfare monitoring methods have been recommended; however, continuous and reliable welfare monitoring in aquaculture is not yet widespread and commonplace. The aim of this scoping review was to present an overview of the most recent developments in fish welfare assessments with a specific focus on practical translation to the aquaculture industry. A keyword-based search was undertaken to identify peer-reviewed papers published between 2014 and 2020 in which a novel method with the potential to be used for the assessment of fish welfare in aquaculture was introduced. The results were sorted into two categories: non-invasive and invasive methods. All methods were assessed for their advantages and disadvantages, potential applicability to aquaculture. Invasive methods were also ranked on their degree of impact. It is concluded that increased interest into fish welfare, in combination with more intelligent modern technology, has resulted in the development of newer and more refined alternatives to traditional methods of welfare assessment such as behaviour monitoring by 2D cameras and plasma cortisol evaluation. Although, in many cases, more research is needed before these methods are suitable for widespread industry use, studies that focus on increasing the precision, automation and practical applicability of these methods are a promising avenue for future research.

In plant pathology, the correct naming of a species is essential for determining the causal agents of disease. Species names not only serve the general purpose of concise communication, but also are critical for effective plant quarantine, preventing the introduction of new pathogens into a territory. Many phytopathogenic genera have multiple species and, in several genera, disagreements between the multiple prevailing species concept definitions result in numerous cryptic species. Some of these species were previously called by various names; forma speciales (specialised forms), subspecies, or pathotypes. However, based on new molecular evidence they are being assigned into new species. The frequent name changes and lack of consistent criteria to delineate cryptic species, species, subspecies, forms, and races create increasing confusion, often making communication among biologists arduous. Furthermore, such ambiguous information can convey misleading evolutionary concepts and species boundaries. The aim of this paper is to review these concepts, clarify their use, and evaluate them by referring to existing examples. We specifically address the question, “Do plant pathogens require a different ranking system?” We conclude that it is necessary to identify phytopathogens to species level based on data from multiple approaches. Furthermore, this identification must go beyond species level to clearly classify hitherto known subspecies, forms and races. In addition, when naming phytopathogenic genera, plant pathologists should provide more information about geographic locations and host ranges as well as host specificities for individual species, cryptic species, forms or races. When describing a new phytopathogen, we suggest that authors provide at least three representative strains together with pathogenicity test results. If Koch’s postulates cannot be fulfilled, it is necessary to provide complementary data such as associated disease severity on the host plant. Moreover, more sequenced collections of species causing diseases should be published in order to stabilise the boundaries of cryptic species, species, subspecies, forms, and races.

This article provides descriptions and illustrations of microfungi associated with the leaf litter of Celtis formosana, Ficus ampelas, F. septica, Macaranga tanarius and Morus australis collected from Taiwan. These host species are native to the island and Celtis formosana is an endemic tree species. The study revealed 95 species, consisting of two new families (Cylindrohyalosporaceae and Oblongohyalosporaceae), three new genera (Cylindrohyalospora, Neodictyosporium and Oblongohyalospora), 41 new species and 54 new host records. Supplemental Digital Content is Available in the Text., Throughout the HIV pandemic, nurses have contributed to or led approaches to understanding the effects of HIV disease at individual and societal levels. Nurses have advocated for socially just care for more than a century, and our efforts have created a foundation on which to further build the state of HIV nursing science with sexual orientation and gender identity/expression (SOGI) Peoples. Nurses have also participated in the development of approaches to manage HIV disease for and in collaboration with populations directly affected by the disease. Our inclusive approach was guided by an international human rights legal framework to review the state of nursing science in HIV with SOGI Peoples. We identified articles that provide practice guidance (n = 44) and interventions (n = 26) to address the health concerns of SOGI Peoples and our communities. Practice guidance articles were categorized by SOGI group: SOGI People collectively, bisexual, transgender, cisgender lesbian, women who have sex with women, cisgender gay men, and men who have sex with men. Interventions were categorized by societal level (i.e., individual, family, and structural). Our review revealed opportunities for future HIV nursing science and practices that are inclusive of SOGI Peoples. Through integrated collaborative efforts, nurses can help SOGI communities achieve optimal health outcomes that are based on dignity and respect for human rights.

Neofusicoccum species are endophytes, saprobes and opportunistic pathogens of many economic and ornamental plants. There are few reports of Neofusicoccum species are available to be associated with orchids worldwide. In this study, five endophytic Neofusicoccum strains were isolated from Dendrobium orchid leaves and stems in southwestern China and northern Thailand. Morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the combined partial nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS), partial RNA polymerase Ⅱ second largest subunit (RPB2), part of the translation elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1α) and beta-tubulin (TUB2) dataset revealed that these isolates belong to two species Neofusicoccum occulatum and N. parvum. This is the first record of Neofusicoccum occulatum associated with Dendrobium chrysanthum while N. parvum associated with D. harveyanum and D. moschatum.

Recent advances in targeted protein degradation have enabled chemical hijacking of the ubiquitin-proteasome system to treat disease. The catalytic rate of cereblon (CRBN)-dependent bifunctional degradation activating compounds (BiDAC), which recruit CRBN to a chosen target protein, resulting in its ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation, is an important parameter to consider during the drug discovery process. In this work, an in vitro system was developed to measure the kinetics of BRD4 bromodomain 1 (BD1) ubiquitination by fitting an essential activator kinetic model to these data. The affinities between BiDACs, BD1, and CRBN in the binary complex, ternary complex, and full ubiquitination complex were characterized. Together, this work provides a new tool for understanding and optimizing the catalytic and thermodynamic properties of BiDACs.

Coccidiosis is an endemic protozoal disease of chickens normally controlled by ionophores. However, coccidiostats are also antibiotics, and evidence of resistance in both coccidia and bacteria may develop and reduce antibacterial activity in humans. This has led to a search for natural coccidiostats, such as green tea.To study the effects of supplementing broilers with various levels and types of green tea, in comparison to use of a conventional coccidiostat or a control, unsupplemented diet.A total of 360 male, day-old Ross 308 broilers (days 1-42) were used to evaluate the gut morphology and performance when challenged with coccidiosis and fed varying dietary levels of green tea powder or extract. Treatments were Negative control (NC, unsupplemented control diet); positive control (PC, control diet + commercial coccidiostat); control diets with 0.2, 0.3 or 0.4 g/kg green tea extract (GTE 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4); and control diets with 1, 2 or 3 g/kg green tea powder (GTP 1, 2 and 3).Compared with NC, PC and all green tea treatments, but particularly GTE0.4, increased feed intake and growth rate, with the best feed conversion ratio at GTE0.4. As a proportion of carcase weight, higher inclusion rates increased intestine weight and decreased abdominal fat. The duodenum, jejunum and ileum of birds fed green tea, and particularly GTE0.4, had longer, wider villi, and shallower crypts. Epithelium thickness was reduced by green tea and PC, compared to NC. Clostridium perfringens and coliform populations decreased in proportion to green tea inclusion rate and decreased in PC. Lactobacilli increased with green tea and were more for NC than PC. Green tea at the highest concentrations reduced blood glucose and LDL and VLDL cholesterol.Green tea offers a possible replacement for conventional ionophores to control coccidiosis in broiler chickens. The best inclusion rate was 0.4 g/kg.

We compared factors mediating motherhood experiences among Black nursing mothers living with HIV in two North American cities to one African city. Motherhood was measured with the Being a Mother Scale, and we compared their predictors between the two continents using difference in difference estimation within hierarchical linear modeling. Cultural beliefs congruent with infant feeding guidelines and social support had significant positive but differing effects on motherhood in the two continents. Perceived stress had significant negative impact on motherhood in the two continents. Due considerations to sociocultural contexts in policy development, HIV interventions and education of health care providers were recommended.

During the course of a study of palm fungi in Portugal, several Bartilinia-like taxa were isolated. Morphological characters and phylogenetic data derived from ITS and LSU sequences supported the establishment of two new Morinia species introduced here as M. trachycarpi and M. phoenicicola spp. nov. isolated from foliar diseases of ornamental palm trees in Lisbon, Portugal. The morphological concept of Morinia is broadened to include enclosed pycnidial conidiomata and conidia with wedge-shaped apical cells, new distinctive morphological characteristics observed in M. trachycarpi. Bartalinia robillardoides was also isolated and is presented here as a new host and geographical record on foliar lesions of Phoenix reclinata from Lisbon, Portugal. Comparative morphological data on species of Morinia, as well as a key to species in Morinia, are provided and discussed.

Disturbed sleep and irregular sleep-wake patterns have been associated with poor outcomes in older adults. Sleep regularity however has not been studied in a sample with current or remitted major depression.138 participants (63.8±8.6 years; n=27 current major depression, n=64 remitted, and n=47 healthy controls) were monitored using wrist-worn actigraphy. The Sleep Regularity Index (SRI), sleep-wake fragmentation and stability, sleep onset and offset timing, number of awakenings and measures from cosinor analysis were computed.Compared with controls, older adults with current depression had lower SRI (p0.01), lower relative amplitude (p0.05), and higher activity during sleeping and post-midnight hours (p0.05). Older adults with remitted depression displayed lower activity during the day (p0.05), showed reduced average activity and lower amplitude than controls. Total sleep time, sleep timing, and number of awakenings did not differ between groups. All groups differed significantly in self-reported sleep quality and depression severity.Longitudinal studies which examine how sleep-wake patterns change based on depressive episode recency, severity and how medications may influence these patterns are needed.Older adults with current or remitted major depression do not differ from controls on traditional sleep metrics but do report poor quality sleep and show differences in sleep regularity and rest-activity patterns. Reducing the risk of poor outcomes in both groups may be aided by interventions that help promote sleep regularity and increased activity.

Objective: Worldwide, 160,000 children were newly infected with HIV in 2018; half of these were infected through breastfeed­ing. Infant feeding guidelines are distinct depending on each country’s resources and national or sub-national guidelines. Because of divergent guidelines, the best infant feeding approach to prevent mother-to-child transmission can become unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the so­ciocultural and psychosocial factors related to adherence to infant feeding guidelines through a city-level, North-South com­parison of Black mothers living with HIV in Nigeria, Canada, and the United States. Design: Using a cross-sectional multi-country survey, a convenience sample of 690 mothers were recruited from June 2016 - December 2019. Socio-cultural and psychosocial factors influencing infant feed­ing practices were measured. Results: Using binary logistic regression, infant feeding attitudes (OR = 1.10), motherhood experiences (OR = 1.08), low hyper-vigilance score (OR = .935), paternal support (OR = 1.10) and percep­tion that the health care provider supported adherence to infant feeding guidelines (OR = 2.43) were associated with guideline ad­herence. Mothers who had cultural beliefs that were inconsistent with infant feeding guidelines and mothers with low incomes (OR = 2.62) were less likely adherent with their country’s guidelines. Conclusion: City-level factors were not found to influence adherence to infant feeding guidelines; however, socio-cultural and psychosocial factors at community, family and individual levels were significant. Policy formulation and targeted interven­tions must be cognizant of cultural expecta­tions of motherhood and mindful of psycho­social determinants of adherence to infant feeding guidelines. Numerous new taxa and classifications of Dothideomycetes have been published following the last monograph of families of Dothideomycetes in 2013. A recent publication by Honsanan et al. in 2020 expanded information of families in Dothideomycetidae and Pleosporomycetidae with modern classifications. In this paper, we provide a refined updated document on orders and familiesincertae sedisof Dothideomycetes. Each family is provided with an updated description, notes, including figures to represent the morphology, a list of accepted genera, and economic and ecological significances. We also provide phylogenetic trees for each order. In this study, 31 orders which consist 50 families are assigned as ordersincertae sedisin Dothideomycetes, and 41 families are treated as familiesincertae sedisdue to lack of molecular or morphological evidence. The new order, Catinellales, and four new families,Catinellaceae,Morenoinaceae NeobuelliellaceaeandThyrinulaceaeare introduced. Seven genera (Neobuelliella,Pseudomicrothyrium,Flagellostrigula,Swinscowia,Macroconstrictolumina,Pseudobogoriella, andSchummia) are introduced. Seven new species (Acrospermum urticae,Bogoriella complexoluminata,Dothiorella ostryae,Dyfrolomyces distoseptatus,Macroconstrictolumina megalateralis,Patellaria microspora, andPseudomicrothyrium thailandicum) are introduced base on morphology and phylogeny, together with two new records/reports and five new collections from different families. Ninety new combinations are also provided in this paper.

Botryosphaeriaceous fungi associated with holm (Q. ilex) and cork (Q. suber) oak trees exhibiting dieback symptoms and cankers in Algeria, were sampled in twelve regions with different ecological conditions. Based on phylogenetic analyses of ITS and tef1-α loci, 13 species were identified. Three species (Diplodia corticola, Dothiorella iberica and Botryosphaeria dothidea) were found to be common to both oak species, while Doth. sarmentorum, D. mutila, Neofusicoccum vitifusiforme, D. insularis, N. stellenboschiana, Doth. plurivora, D. seriata, D. rosacearum, N. parvum and N. terminaliae were found only on one of the hosts. All the Botryosphaeriaceae taxa inoculated on oak shoots produced brown vascular discolouration, and were shown to be pathogenic on both oak species. Diplodia corticola was the most widespread and frequent species showing the highest aggressiveness towards both hosts. Neofusicoccum stellenboschiana, D. insularis and Doth. plurivora are recorded for the first time on Q. suber and Q. ilex. In addition to altitude, the environmental factors temperature and drought appeared to be influential variables that could describe the occurrence and the geographic distribution of these fungal species.

Gentling of cats in a shelter has been shown to increase contented behaviors and reduce anxiety, but it is not clear how gentling should be provided. Two experiments were conducted in cats confined to cages, each having a central room with a large shelf at the back of the cage and a small one at the front and a separate, closed-off litter area. In experiment 1, cats were gentled daily for five days, with either one session of 6 minutes per day or three sessions of 2 minutes each per day, both with and without accompanying human vocalizations. One daily gentling period of 6 minutes, without human vocalizations, appeared more beneficial than three daily periods of 2 minutes. Knowledge of circadian phase is critical for timing interventions for circadian rhythm disorders, medications, or predicting alertness. Current gold-standard measures of circadian phase are impractical for continuous or real-time tracking. Mathematical modeling offers an alternative, whereby ambulatory monitoring of environmental, behavioral, and/or physiological variables can be used to predict circadian phase. This review examines available approaches for predicting circadian phase, ranging from statistical models to machine learning and dynamical systems models, and evaluates their readiness for individual phase predictions. Multiple models predicted circadian phase with similar accuracy when individuals were stably entrained. However, most models did not generalize, or were not tested, under more challenging conditions (e.g., circadian misalignment). One model performed similarly under a range of conditions: a limit-cycle oscillator model. Most models had been designed to predict circadian phase using group-level assumptions. Future work should focus on model individualization and improved wearables to capture more accurate ambulatory signals.

Objectives Methods for analyzing sleep as a dyadic behavior remain relatively unexplored. We aimed to (1) characterize how bedpartners influence each other's sleep, and (2) identify factors that predict sensitivity to wake transmission between bedpartners. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Community members in Melbourne, Australia. Participants Fifty-five couples without sleep disorders, aged 18-72 years. Measurements Participants completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, reduced version. Habitual sleep/wake patterns were monitored for seven nights via actigraphy and sleep diary. Epoch-by-epoch sleep/wake concordances (shared sleep/wake minutes), number of transmissions received (number of awakenings immediately preceded by bedpartner wakefulness), percent transmissions received (percentage of total awakenings that were transmissions), transmissibility (percentage of all bedpartner awakenings transmitted), and percent minutes resistant to transmission (percentage of bedpartner's wake minutes that an individual slept), were calculated. Mixed-effects modeling assessed predictors of dyadic sleep. Results We described rates of sleep concordance (M = 66.8% ± 6.8%), wake concordance (M = 6.8% ± 3.1%), number of transmissions received (M = 6.0 ± 2.7), percent transmissions received (M = 18.9% ± 7.5%), transmissibility (M = 20.0% ± 6.2%), and percent minutes resistant (M = 52.1% ± 13.6%). Average couple-level percent transmissions received were highest and percent minutes resistant lowest in couples who had similar bedtime (within 30 minutes), compared to couples with greater differences in bedtime. Conclusions Wake transmission is a useful metric of dyadic sleep, which varies according to relative bedtimes, and chronotypes of bedpartners. Higher wake transmissions for couples with similar bedtimes suggest dyadic preferences for shared bedtimes may be due to psychosocial benefits of shared sleep timing, rather than minimization of bedpartner-driven sleep disruption.

Behavioral assessment of dogs is performed at shelters worldwide, often in an attempt to identify dogs that may have behavior problems after adoption. However, the assessment components have been shown to have unknown or in some cases limited predictability for exhibition of problems in the new home, with generally good predictability for sociability and friendliness aspects of assessment, but weaker predictability for with problem behaviors. Despite the fact that some components of commonly used assessments have not been shown to be valid particularly with respect to problem behaviors, we believe that they can usefully contribute to an understanding of dogs' behaviors when combined with history from the previous owner, and shelter volunteer and staff observations. Learning about a dog's behavior may allow the dog to be matched with an adopter's requirements and help the adopter to understand the dog. Some assessments can identify dogs with problem behaviors and these dogs can be directed to a behavior modification program. If staff are adequately educated and uniform assessments are used across shelters, continual monitoring of behavior can identify welfare issues and other challenges that may highlight problems within a shelter that contribute to welfare concerns for the dogs. We conclude that shelters should focus on using standard behavior assessments in conjunction with other tools to improve shelter practices and potentially mitigate behavior issues.

BACKGROUND DermaScan C high frequency ultrasound was investigated for image capture and analysis of dermal measures in people with and without primary lymphoedema. METHOD Three repeated images were taken at six sites in people without lymphoedema (NLO). Intra-rater reliability was assessed by taking three sets of measures on images from 10 people and inter-session reliability by capturing three images, lifting the probe from the skin in between. Methods were adjusted, and repeated images from four sites were taken in people with primary lymphoedema (PLO) and reliability re-assessed. RESULTS Intra-rater reliability in NLO and PLO for echogenicity measures were excellent (NLO ICC(3,1) : .989; PLO .997) across all sites and specific to each site (calf: ICC(3,1) : .989; and foot: ICC(3,1) : .999, respectively). Inter-session reliability was moderate for NLO (ICC(3,1) : .727), improving after method modifications for PLO (ICC(3,1) : .916). When investigated by site, inter-session reliability was good in the foot (ICC(3,1) : .811) and moderate in the calf (ICC(3,1) : .616). Mean thickness analysed by site resulted in good inter-session reliability only in the foot (ICC(3,1) .838). CONCLUSION Intra-rater reliability was excellent using the DermaScan C for dermal measures in people with primary lymphoedema. Inter-session reliability required particular attention to method and gain settings.

Infrared thermography is a tool to investigate the welfare of cattle. This study aimed to identify a sampling strategy for recording infrared thermograms in dairy cows, in order to most efficiently determine biologically relevant changes in the maximum infrared temperature (IRT) of the eyes and coronary band of forelimbs. Thirty-one dairy cows were used for the study. They were assessed with four replicates of thermograms for each of the head and lower forelimb per cow for 6 mostly consecutive days (sessions). The data obtained were subjected to random effects Analysis of Variance which was used to estimate the variance components for this sampling model, using maximum IRT of both eyes; (left + right eye)/2 and both limbs; (left + right coronary band of forelimb)/2 as dependant variables. The variance components were used to calculate least significant differences (LSD) between two theoretical treatment groups under different sampling scenarios. Analysis showed that there was minimal improvement in precision beyond 2 thermograms within a session but there was improvement with increasing the number of sessions from 2 to 3. The LSD of both eyes and both limbs reached a biologically relevant difference (0.4 and 0.9 °C, respectively) at a minimum number of 14 - 16 cows monitored for 2 consecutive thermography sessions, or 10 - 12 cows for 3 sessions. We conclude that no more than 2 replicate IRT measures are required per session but that measuring on 3 consecutive days should be considered, depending on whether time or number of cows used is the primary limitation.

Nigrospora is a monophyletic genus belonging to Apiosporaceae. Species in this genus are phytopathogenic, endophytic, and saprobic on different hosts. In this study, leaf specimens with disease symptoms were collected from host plants from the Shandong Peninsula, China. The fungal taxa associated with these leaf spots were studied using morphology and phylogeny based on ITS, TEF1, and TUB2 gene regions. In this article, we report on the genus Nigrospora with N. gorlenkoana, N. oryzae, N. osmanthi, N. rubi, and N. sphaerica identified with 13 novel host associations including crops with economic importance such as bamboo and Chinese rose.

The welfare of aquatic animals is receiving increasing attention around the world, and this should be reflected in the veterinary curricular. Veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand ranked the importance of five pre-selected topics on aquatic animal welfare and ethical issues for newly qualified veterinarians in an online survey. They ranked aquatic animals’ health and welfare issues, husbandry techniques of farmed fish, and the use of antibiotics as being of high importance for their first day in practice, with pain and distress associated with angling and trawling practices (fishing) and euthanasia ranking moderate to high. Females assigned more importance to fishing, health and welfare issues, and husbandry techniques of farmed fish than did males. Students in the early stages of study assigned more importance to fishing than did senior students. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to investigate what importance veterinary students place on their competence regarding aquatic animal welfare and ethics. Gaining an understanding of how veterinary students prioritize these issues, and if this differs based on gender and stage of study, will help veterinary educators to better prepare graduates to address concerns surrounding the welfare of aquatic animals. This could be achieved by careful consideration of course content and where in the curriculum this material is taught, as well as reiterating key messages in the senior years and addressing changing student attitudes as they progress through the course.

The cosmopolitan plant genusClematiscontains many climbing species that can be found worldwide. The genus occurs in the wild and is grown commercially for horticulture. Microfungi onClematiswere collected from Belgium, China, Italy, Thailand and the UK. They are characterized by morphology and analyses of gene sequence data using an integrated species concept to validate identifications. The study revealed two new families, 12 new genera, 50 new species, 26 new host records with one dimorphic character report, and ten species are transferred to other genera. The new families revealed by multigene phylogeny are Longiostiolaceae and Pseudomassarinaceae in Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes). Study ObjectivesLight is the primary stimulus for synchronizing the circadian clock in humans. There are very large interindividual differences in the sensitivity of the circadian clock to light. Little is currently known about the genetic basis for these interindividual differences.MethodsWe performed a genome-wide gene-by-environment interaction study (GWIS) in 280 897 individuals from the UK Biobank cohort to identify genetic variants that moderate the effect of daytime light exposure on chronotype (individual time of day preference), acting as “light sensitivity” variants for the impact of daylight on the circadian system.ResultsWe identified a genome-wide significant SNP mapped to the ARL14EP gene (rs3847634; p < 5 × 10−8), where additional minor alleles were found to enhance the morningness effect of daytime light exposure (βGxE = −.03, SE = 0.005) and were associated with increased gene ARL14EP expression in brain and retinal tissues. Gene-property analysis showed light sensitivity loci were enriched for genes in the G protein-coupled glutamate receptor signaling pathway and genes expressed in Per2+ hypothalamic neurons. Linkage disequilibrium score regression identified Bonferroni significant genetic correlations of greater light sensitivity GWIS with later chronotype and shorter sleep duration. Greater light sensitivity was nominally genetically correlated with insomnia symptoms and risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).ConclusionsThis study is the first to assess light as an important exposure in the genomics of chronotype and is a critical first step in uncovering the genetic architecture of human circadian light sensitivity and its links to sleep and mental health.

BackgroundDuring adolescence, sleep and circadian timing shift later, contributing to restricted sleep duration and irregular sleep-wake patterns. The association of these developmental changes in sleep and circadian timing with cognitive functioning, and consequently academic outcomes, has not been examined prospectively. The role of ambient light exposure in these developmental changes is also not well understood. Here, we describe the protocol for the Circadian Light in Adolescence, Sleep and School (CLASS) Study that will use a longitudinal design to examine the associations of sleep-wake timing, circadian timing and light exposure with academic performance and sleepiness during a critical stage of development. We also describe protocol adaptations to enable remote data collection when required during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsApproximately 220 healthy adolescents aged 12–13 years (school Year 7) will be recruited from the general community in Melbourne, Australia. Participants will be monitored at five 6 monthly time points over 2 years. Sleep and light exposure will be assessed for 2 weeks during the school term, every 6 months, along with self-report questionnaires of daytime sleepiness. Circadian phase will be measured via dim light melatonin onset once each year. Academic performance will be measured via national standardised testing (National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test—Australian and New Zealand Standardised Third Edition in school Years 7 and 9. Secondary outcomes, including symptoms of depression, anxiety and sleep disorders, will be measured via questionnaires.DiscussionThe CLASS Study will enable a comprehensive longitudinal assessment of changes in sleep-wake timing, circadian phase, light exposure and academic performance across a key developmental stage in adolescence. Findings may inform policies and intervention strategies for secondary school-aged adolescents.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval was obtained by the Monash University Human Research Ethics Committee and the Victorian Department of Education. Dissemination plans include scientific publications, scientific conferences, via stakeholders including schools and media.Study datesRecruitment occurred between October 2019 and September 2021, data collection from 2019 to 2023.
