8. Power deposition of H minority heating with a new compact ICRF antenna in KSTAR

Abstract

The new compact ICRH antenna (CIA) with low electric field and conjugate-T has been installed in KSTAR. It is essential for studying the effect on the KSTAR plasma of H minority heating as a main ICRH scheme. The TRANSP-TORIC code has been adopted for analyzing the ICRH effect. The calculation using TRANSP-TORIC has been conducted with an additional 1 MW of ICRH power to the KSTAR operation at B0 = 2.0 T. About 75% of the ICRH power has coupled to the H minority heating, and most of the power of H minority heating has contributed to the energy of D majority ions and electrons. The deposited profile of the minority heating power varies with the concentration rate of the H minority ions and shows the possibility of producing energetic particles which appears to the increasing energy of D majority ions. 9. Nitrogen and residue management effects on productivity and profitability of happy seeder wheat in Indian Punjab

Abstract

Development of a suitable nitrogen (N) management strategy in wheat sown under residue retained conditions will go a long way in maintaining its sustainability. The reason for this is the variable concentration of N in rice residues and complexity of crop N demand. The present experiment was conducted at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during rabi2016–17 and 2017–18 to study the infuence of different residue and nitrogen management practices on productivity and proftability of Happy Seeder sown wheat. Experiment was conducted in randomized block design (RBD) consisting of eleven residue and N management treatments in four replications. The results revealed that yield attributes and grain yield of Happy Seeder sown wheat varied signifcantly with different residue and N management practices. Yield attributes (effective tillers, spike length & number of grains/spike) and grain yield (54.2 & 53.6 q/ha) were maximum in treatment where 150 kg N (30 kg at chopping of straw and 120 kg as per recommendation) was applied along with 5 t farmyard manure (FYM)/ha, which was signifcantly better than NC + N125, C + N125, C + FYM5 + N125 and C + N20+105 treatments but statistically at par with rest of the treatments. Highest gross (Rs. 1, 18, 155 & 1, 28, 011/ha) and net (Rs. 85, 120 & 94, 466/ha) returns were obtained with C + FYM5 + N30+120 during 2016–17 and 2017–18, respectively. But highest beneft cost ratio (2.59 & 2.87) was reported in treatment C + FYM5 + N30+95 during both years. It may be concluded that application of 20/30 kg N/ha at the time of chopping of straw improved grain yield of Happy Seeder wheat as compared to recommended schedule of N application.

11. Enhanced thermal stability of Bi2Te3-based alloys via interface engineering with atomic layer deposition

Abstract

The ease of Te sublimation from Bi2Te3-based alloys significantly deteriorates thermoelectric and mechanical properties via the formation of voids. We propose a novel strategy based on atomic layer deposition (ALD) to improve the thermal stability of Bi2Te3-based alloys via the encapsulation of grains with a ZnO layer. Only a few cycles of ZnO ALD over the Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 powders resulted in significant suppression of the generation of pores in Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 extrudates and increased the density even after post-annealing at 500 °C. This is attributed to the suppression of Te sublimation from the extrudates. The ALD coating also enhanced grain refinement in Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 extrudates. Consequently, their mechanical properties were significantly improved by the encapsulation approach. Furthermore, the ALD approach yields a substantial improvement in the figure-of-merit after the post-annealing. Therefore, we believe the proposed approach using ALD will be useful for enhancing the mechanical properties of Bi2Te3-based alloys without sacrificing thermoelectric performance.

12. KSTAR Status and Upgrade Plan Toward Fusion Reactor

Abstract

Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) program has made significant advances in the development of long pulse and high-performance plasma scenarios, utilizing the advantages of the fully superconducting tokamak. Ten years of KSTAR operation have produced outstanding progress in plasma control, extending the operating window of the plasma discharges, and achieving the H-mode up to 1.2 MA in plasma current, up to 90 s at top duration, and up to 2.16 in elongation. The unique features of the KSTAR device also produced a record 30 s long pulse in H-mode operation without an edge-localized-mode (ELM) crash, and progress in the fundamental transport physics through systematic study, using unique diagnostic capabilities. Therefore, the next near-term research focus will be on how to extend the high performance plasmas up to 300 s by overcoming scientific and engineering obstacles to steady state operation. For fusion reactors, the tokamak device needs to sustain a permanent plasma current. It is also known that the bootstrap current should play an important role in the plasma current for an efficient fusion reactor, and its contribution should be over as high as possible. An internal transport barrier discharge based on the reverse shear profile of the safety factor is one of the promising candidates for enhancing the bootstrap current. However, even in reverse shear mode, an additional external off axis current drive (CD) should be provided to control the current profile, as well as to supplement the plasma current. KSTAR has pursued steady state to operation, aiming for a fully non inductive state, based on real time (RT) plasma control by maximizing the long pulse capabilities of the superconducting machine. In order to deposit current at an arbitrary position, the first requirement is to have many highly efficient CD actuators capable of profile diversity. KSTAR has prepared several RF CD portfolios in addition to a conventional on and off axis CD neutral beam injection (NBI) system. The final target of an off axis current drive will be a 4 MW off-axis NB, 8 MW on-axis NB, 6 MW electron cyclotron heating (ECH), and 4 MW radio frequency heating and current drive (RFHCD) (ion cyclotron (IC), lower hybrid (LH), Helicon CD). In addition, as a long-term goal, demonstrating a long pulse core edge compatible plasma in a reactor relevant condition is important in present medium size tokamak, since it is expected to sustain a very high pressure pedestal height plasma using super H-mode, with parallel upgrades of the superconducting toroidal field (TF) coils.

15. Non-monotonic radial structures of fluctuating temperatures and densities associated with fishbone activities in KSTAR

Abstract

General characteristics of a fishbone mode in KSTAR are investigated. Fishbone activities are observed with a Mirnov coil, an electron cyclotron emission radiometer (from the core to the edge of plasmas) and an beam emission spectroscopy system (core or edge plasmas) which are measuring fluctuations of poloidal magnetic fields, electron temperatures, and densities, respectively. Temporal evolutions of these fluctuations are similar to the observations from other tokamaks. An interesting and notable feature found in KSTAR fishbone modes is that radial coherence structures of electron temperature and density with respect to magnetic fluctuations are non-monotonic that they have a local minimum at [Formula: see text] and a maximum at [Formula: see text] in addition to the usual global peak near the q = 1 surface, where r/ a is the normalized minor radius and q is the safety factor. Furthermore, the associated temporal evolution of the electron temperatures in slow-time scale, i.e., less than 1 kHz, with the fishbone activities show that there exist a drop in temperature or increase in temperature depending on inside or outside the q = 1 surface, respectively, from the core to the edge plasmas except that there are almost no temperature changes in the intermediate region which seems to be correlated with the non-monotonic coherence profile. Such a non-monotonic structure and the slow temporal evolution of temperatures are explained with barely trapped resonating fast ions with the banana orbit widths of the order of the minor radius, so that they transit the core and the edge regions simultaneously without trespassing the mid-plane intermediate region.

17. Nitrogen and residue management effects on performance of happy seeder sown wheat

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2016-17 and 2017-18 to evaluate the influence of different residue and nitrogen management practices on soil physico-chemical properties, root density, weed growth and grain yield of happy seeder sown wheat. Experiment was conducted in randomized block design consisting of eleven residue and nitrogen management treatments in four replications. The results inferred that weed biomass was significantly less in chopped straw treatments (C) as compared to unchopped treatments (NC). Treatments receiving 150 kg N/ha had higher root density than 125 kg N/ha treatments at all soil depths during both years. Soil physical and chemical properties were not significantly affected but there was improvement in these properties after two years of residue retention. Grain yield (5.42 and 5.36 t/ha) was maximum in treatment where 150 kg N (30 kg at chopping of straw and 120 kg as per recommendation) was applied along with 5 t/ha FYM (C+N30+120+FYM5), which was significantly better than NC + N125, C + N125, C + FYM5 + N125 and C + N20+105 treatments but statistically at par with rest of the treatments.

18. Revealing a bilingual science teacher’s dynamic views and practice about science and language teaching through dialogic reflections

Abstract

Adopting a sociocultural perspective, we construct a case study exploring how a middle school bilingual science teacher reflected and acted when engaged in dialogue, co-teaching, and a newly designed unit on plate tectonics. Sources of data include video of classroom interaction and audio recordings of daily debriefs between the bilingual science teacher and second author. Dialogic reflections between these individuals reveal how the new curriculum, the dialogue, and co-teaching with the second author mediated the teacher’s emerging abilities to think and act in different ways at that sociohistorical moment in time. Based on these findings, we highly encourage professional development experiences to include ongoing dialogic reflection and co-teaching to “shake” teachers’ views and practice. These initial connections can indicate inroads into helping teachers broaden understanding of bilingual science education.

19. Rice straw biochar improves soil fertility, growth, and yield of rice–wheat system on a sandy loam soil

Abstract

Biochar has received attention due to its potential for mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration in soil and improving soil quality and crop productivity. This study evaluated the effects of rice straw biochar (RSB) and rice husk ash (RHA) each applied at 5 Mg ha−1and four N levels (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha−1) on soil fertility, growth, and yield of rice and wheat for three consecutive rice–wheat rotations. RSB significantly increased electrical conductivity, dehydrogenase activity, and P and K contents when compared to control (no amendment) up to 7.5 cm soil depth. Both RSB and RHA did not influence shoot N concentration in wheat plant but significantly increased P and K concentrations at 60 days after sowing. Grain yields of both rice and wheat were significantly higher in RSB as compared to control (no amendment) and RHA treatments. While the highest grain yields of rice and wheat were observed at 120 kg N ha−1in RHA and no biochar-treated plots, a significant increase in grain yields was observed at 80 kg N ha−1in RSB treatment, thereby saving 40 kg N ha−1in each crop. Both agronomic and recovery N efficiencies in rice and wheat were significantly higher in RSB-amended soil compared to control. Significant positive correlations were observed between soil N, P, and K concentrations and total N, P, and K concentrations in aboveground biomass of wheat at 60 days after sowing. This study showed the potential benefits of applying RSB for improving soil fertility and yields of rice and wheat in a rice–wheat system.

Abstract

The electronic structures of Gd-substituted Bi2−xGdxTe3 single crystals have been investigated by employing synchrotron-radiation spectroscopies, such as soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), photoemission spectroscopy (PES), and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM). SPEM measurements confirm that Gd ions are substituted homogeneously in Bi2−xGdxTe3 crystals. The measured Gd 3d XAS and XMCD spectra provide evidence that the substituted Gd ions are trivalent and magnetic. The hν-dependence of the valence-band (VB) PES spectra are described well by the hν-dependent contributions of the Te 5p and Bi 6p states. A good agreement is found between the measured VB PES spectra of Bi2−xGdxTe3 and the calculated partial densities of states, revealing that the Te 5p states will play an important role in determining the thermoelectric and topological properties of Bi2−xGdxTe3.

Abstract

In order to clarify the controversial issue of the topological nature in a mixed-valent Kondo system, ${\mathrm{SmB}}_{6}$, we have explored the surface states on the nonpolar (110) surface of ${\mathrm{SmB}}_{6}$, employing both angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiment and ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) band calculations. Based on ARPES spectroscopic fingerprints and the DFT surface band structures, we ascribe the observed spectral weights at $\overline{X}$ and $\overline{Y}$ on the (110) surface Brillouin zone to topological surface states (TSSs) of ``topological insulator (TI)'' nature and of ``topological crystalline insulator (TCI)'' nature, respectively. With varying the chemical potential, the double Dirac cones of the TCI nature exhibit a Lifshitz transition of Fermi surfaces with intriguing spin textures. We have also examined the TSSs on the nearly nonpolar (111) surface of ${\mathrm{SmB}}_{6}$ in connection with a recently reported ARPES result and proposed a way to probe the Dirac points that are buried in the bulk-projected bands.

Abstract

Previous high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies of URu$_2$Si$_2$ have characterized the temperature-dependent behavior of narrow-band states close to the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) at low photon energies near the zone center, with an emphasis on electronic reconstruction due to Brillouin zone folding. A substantial challenge to a proper description is that these states interact with other hole-band states that are generally absent from bulk-sensitive soft x-ray ARPES measurements. Here we provide a more global $k$-space context for the presence of such states and their relation to the bulk Fermi surface topology using synchrotron-based wide-angle and photon energy-dependent ARPES mapping of the electronic structure using photon energies intermediate between the low-energy regime and the high-energy soft x-ray regime. Small-spot spatial dependence, $f$-resonant photoemission, Si 2$p$ core-levels, x-ray polarization, surface-dosing modification, and theoretical surface slab calculations are employed to assist identification of bulk versus surface state character of the $E_\mathrm{F}$-crossing bands and their relation to specific U- or Si-terminations of the cleaved surface. The bulk Fermi surface topology is critically compared to density functional theory and to dynamical mean field theory calculations. In addition to clarifying some aspects of the previously measured high symmetry $\Gamma$, Z and X points, incommensurate 0.6a* nested Fermi-edge states located along Z-N-Z are found to be distinctly different from the density functional theory Fermi surface prediction. The temperature evolution of these states above $T_{HO}$, combined with a more detailed theoretical investigation of this region, suggests a key role of the N-point in the hidden order transition., Comment: topical review 47 pages, 12 figures, proof edits, hyperlinked TOC

Abstract

The electronic structure of a possible topological Kondo insulator of CeRhAs has been investigated by employing temperature $(T)$-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Fermi surfaces (FSs) and band structures are successfully measured for three orthogonal crystallographic planes. The measured Fermi-edge states are found to have a three-dimensional (3D) character, contradictory to the proposed topological surface states of the $2\text{D}$ character. The measured FSs due to the Ce $4f$ electrons agree well with those from the density functional theory band structures unfolded into the reduced Ce-only unit cell. The theoretically predicted hourglass-type bulk bands along $\overline{X}\overline{S}\overline{X}$ are not clearly resolved, in spite of the evident existence of those band features. $T$-dependent ARPES measurements reveal that the coherent Ce $4f$ states, having two pseudogap structures of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{1}\ensuremath{\sim}80$ meV and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{2}\ensuremath{\sim}30$ meV, persist to remain above 200 K, in agreement with the high Kondo temperature of CeRhAs.

Abstract

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p collisions, for direct photon pT from 5–12 GeV/c, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in d+Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au+Au compared to p+p and d+Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au+Au increases to an excess over the yield in p+p collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron pT and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

Abstract

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ($b\bar{b}$) production in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ($1.2 1$ GeV/$c$, and dimuon mass of 5--10 GeV/$c^2$. The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for $b\bar{b}$ production is $13.1 \pm 0.6~(\mbox{stat}) \pm 1.5~(\mbox{syst}) \pm 2.7~(\mbox{global})~\mu$b. The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from $b\bar{b}$ decays and their $p_T$ distributions are compared to distributions generated using {\sc ps pythia 6}, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair $p_T$ distribution are not very well described by {\sc pythia} calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

Abstract

The PHENIX experiment has measured the spin alignment for inclusive J/ψ→e+e- decays in proton-proton collisions at s=510 GeV at midrapidity. The angular distributions have been measured in three different polarization frames, and the three decay angular coefficients have been extracted in a full two-dimensional analysis. Previously, PHENIX saw large longitudinal net polarization at forward rapidity at the same collision energy. This analysis at midrapidity, complementary to the previous PHENIX results, sees no sizable polarization in the measured transverse momentum range of 0.0

Abstract

By employing soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we have investigated the electronic structure of the candidate zero-moment half-metallic Mn3Ga. We have studied the ball-milled and annealed Mn3Ga powder samples that exhibit nearly zero magnetization. Mn 2 p XAS revealed that Mn ions in Mn3Ga are nearly divalent for both of the Mn ions having the locally octahedral symmetry and those having the locally tetrahedral symmetry. The measured Mn 2 p XMCD spectrum of Mn3Ga is very similar to that of ferrimagnetic MnFe2O4 having divalent Mn ions. The sum-rule analysis of the Mn 2 p XMCD spectrum shows that both the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Mn ions in Mn3Ga are negligibly small, in agreement with the nearly compensated-ferrimagnetic ground state of Mn3Ga. The valence-band PES spectrum of Mn3Ga agrees well with the calculated density of states, supporting the half-metallic electronic structure of Mn3Ga.

Abstract

By employing soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we have investigated the temperature (T)-dependent valence and spin states of Cr ions in half-metallic ferromagnet CrO2 nanorod powder. The lineshape-analysis of both the Cr 2 p XAS and XMCD spectra of CrO2 reveals that the Cr ions in bulk CrO2 have both Cr 4 + t 2 g 2 ↑ and Cr 3 + t 2 g 3 ↑ valence configurations. This work provides the direct experimental evidence for the Cr 3 + - Cr 4 + mixed-valent states in bulk CrO2 ( Cr 3.8 + ) , demonstrating that the half-metallic ferromagnetism in CrO2 originates from the double-exchange interaction. The T-dependent intensity variation of the Cr 2 p XMCD spectrum agrees well with the bulk magnetization M(T) and the Curie temperature, indicating that the measured Cr 2 p XMCD data represent the intrinsic bulk ferromagnetism in CrO2, and support the above finding of the XMCD lineshape analysis.

Abstract

We have investigated the angle-dependent orbital and spin magnetic moments of the [Co/Pd] multilayer (ML) films with intervening CoO layers under annealing by employing angle-dependent soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). After annealing, the orbital magnetic moments of Co ions are found to be enhanced, with the maximum values along the perpendicular direction of [Co/Pd] ML, providing evidence for the origin of the improved perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) being the interface spin–orbit coupling. The induced Pd polarization was observed after annealing, demonstrating the strong Co-Pd hybridization arising from the Co-Pd alloy formation near the interface. The angle-dependent coercivity follows the 1 / cos θ behavior, suggesting that the magnetization reversal in the hysteresis curve in [Co/Pd] ML occurs mainly through the pinning mechanism.

Abstract

Background Studies have shown melasma lesions to be distributed across the face in centrofacial, malar, and mandibular patterns. Meanwhile, however, melasma lesions of the periorbital area have yet to be thoroughly described. Methods We analyzed normal and ultraviolet light-exposed photographs of patients with melasma. The periorbital melasma lesions were measured according to anatomical reference points and a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed. Results The periorbital melasma lesions showed clinical features of fine and homogenous melasma pigmentation, involving both the upper and lower eyelids that extended to other anatomical sites with a darker and coarser appearance. The hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that patients with periorbital melasma can be categorized into two clusters according to the surface anatomy of the face. Significant differences between cluster 1 and cluster 2 were found in lateral distance and inferolateral distance, but not in medial distance and superior distance. Comparing the two clusters, patients in cluster 2 were found to be significantly older and more commonly accompanied by melasma lesions of the temple and medial cheek. Conclusion Our hierarchical cluster analysis of periorbital melasma lesions demonstrated that Asian patients with periorbital melasma can be categorized into two clusters according to the surface anatomy of the face.

Abstract

The electronic structures of the layered rare-earth chalcogenide compounds of CeTe2, PrTe2, and PrTe3, which have the charge-density wave (CDW) transition and possibly the chiral transition, have been investigated by employing soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). R 3d XAS measurements show that the valence states of Ce and Pr ions are nearly trivalent in all the compounds. Similar band dispersions are observed in their measured ARPES data, but with the band positions in PrTe3 being shifted up in energy compared to those in CeTe2 and PrTe2. These findings suggest that their Te 5p band structures are determined mainly by the 2D interactions in the Te(2)/Te(3) sheets, but with a larger number of holes in the Te 5p bands in PrTe3 than in CeTe2 and PrTe2. The measured constant energy maps of CeTe2, PrTe2, and PrTe3 for high binding energies are similar to one another, reflecting the Te 5p band structures of the Te(2)/Te(3) square nets. In contrast, the Fermi surfaces (FSs) of CeTe2 and PrTe3 exhibit extra features, different from the FS of the ideal Te(2)/Te(3) square nets, which arise from the CDW-induced FS reconstruction in the Te(2)/Te(3) sheets.

Abstract

Structural and oxygen content changes of hexagonal HoMnO3+δ manganite at the stability boundary in the perovskite phase have been studied by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry using in situ oxidation and reduction processes at elevated temperatures in oxygen and air. The oxygen storage properties during structural transformation between stoichiometric Hex0 and oxygen-loaded Hex1 phases, transition temperatures and kinetics of the oxygen incorporation and release are reported for materials prepared by the solid-state synthesis and high-impact mechanical milling. Long-term annealing experiments have shown that the Hex0 (δ = 0) → Hex1 (δ ≈ 0.28) phase transition is limited by the surface reaction and nucleation of the new phase for HoMnO3+δ 15MM. The temperatures of Hex0 ↔ Hex1 transitions have been established at 290 °C and 250 °C upon heating and cooling, respectively, at a rate of 0.1° min−1, also indicating that the temperature hysteresis of the transition could possibly be as small as 10 °C in the equilibrium. Ball-milling of HoMnO3+δ has only a small effect on improving the speed of the reduction/oxidation processes in oxygen, but importantly, allowed for considerable oxygen incorporation in air at a temperature range of 220–255 °C after prolonged heating. The Mn 2p XAS results of the Mn valence in oxygen loaded samples support the oxygen content determined by the TG method. The magnetic susceptibility data of the effective Mn valence gave inconclusive results due to dominating magnetism of the Ho3+ ions. Comparison of HoMnO3+δ with previously studied DyMnO3+δ indicates that a tiny increase in the ionic size of lanthanide has a huge effect on the redox properties of hexagonal manganites and that practical properties could be significantly improved by synthesizing the larger average size (Y,Ln)MnO3+δ manganites.

Abstract

Introduction/Background We investigated the long-term oncologic outcomes and prognostic factors in CC patients following laparoscopic radical trachelectomy (LRT) with vaginal colpotomy. Methodology Between 2004 and 2018, 118 CC patients with FIGO stage IA2-IIA1 were treated with LRT with vaginal colpotomy in Asan medical center. The cases of prior neoadjuvant chemotherapy for CC or intraoperative converted radical hysterectomy were excluded. Total 101 patients were included in this study. Clinicopathological variables of the patients were retrospectively reviewed from electronic medical records. Results The median follow-up period was 54.7 months (IQR, 24.7–77.7). The mean age and tumor size were 32.0 (range, 22–43) and 2.03cm (range, 0.1–7) and Stage IB1 disease was the most common (83.2%), followed by stage IA2 (10%) and IB2 (5.9%). Forty-seven (46.5%) patients had a tumor size greater than 2cm. Twelve patients (11.9%) had lympho-vascular space invasion (LVSI), 26 patients (25.7%) had deep stromal invasion greater than 50%, and 2 patients (2%) had vaginal involvement. Two patients (2.0%) had lymph node metastasis. Twelve (10.9%) had adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate was 98% and the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 91.1%. A deep stromal invasion greater than 50% (P=0.025), tumor grade (P=0.027), vagina involvement (p=0.040), and LVSI (P=0.020) were significant prognostic factors for recurrence. In tumor size below 2 cm, the 5-year DFS was 94.4%. Moreover, in tumor size below 2cm with no risk factors, there was no recurrence. Conclusion LRT with vaginal colpotomy is feasible and has favorable oncologic outcomes in tumor size below 2 cm with no risk factors. And in cases of having above recurrent risk factors, we may consider further adjuvant chemotherapy or warning to the patients about recurrence. However, further study is warranted. Abstract

We demonstrate theoretically that the golden phase of SmS ($g$-SmS), a correlated mixed-valent system, exhibits nontrivial surface states with diverse topology. It turns out that this material is an ideal playground to investigate different band topologies in different surface terminations. We have explored surface states on three different (001), (111), and (110) surface terminations. Topological signature in the (001) surface is not apparent due to a hidden Dirac cone inside the bulk-projected bands. In contrast, the (111) surface shows a clear gapless Dirac cone in the gap region, demonstrating the unambiguous topological Kondo nature of $g$-SmS. Most interestingly, the (110) surface exhibits both topological-insulator-type and topological-crystalline-insulator (TCI)-type surface states simultaneously. Two different types of double Dirac cones, Rashba-type and TCI-type, realized on the (001) and (110) surfaces, respectively, are analyzed with the mirror eigenvalues and mirror Chern numbers obtained from the model-independent \emph{ab initio} band calculations., 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The electronic structure of a M\"obius Kondo insulator candidate of CeRhSb has been investigated by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) band calculations, and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) band calculations. Fermi surfaces (FSs) and band structures are successfully measured for three orthogonal crystallographic directions. A sharp Ce $4f$ peak is observed at the Fermi level (${E}_{\text{F}}$), and its temperature ($T$) evolution agrees with that of the Ce $4f$ Kondo resonance. The metallic FSs are obtained for all three different (100), (010), and (001) planes. The Ce $4f$ FSs are described properly by the unfolded DFT calculations considering the reduced Ce-only unit cell. The $T$ dependence of Ce $4f$ states as well as the dispersive coherent Ce $4f$ bands are described well by the DMFT calculations and reveal the anisotropic $c\text{\ensuremath{-}}f$ hybridization. The photon energy dependence of the Fermi-edge states in CeRhSb reveals the three-dimensional character, consistent with the bulk states dispersing to ${E}_{\text{F}}$ over a larger energy scale rather than the predicted M\"obius topological surface states.

Abstract

The electronic structures of multiferroic oxides of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) (0 < x < 0.12) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The measured Fe and Ti 2p XAS spectra show that Ti ions are in the Ti4+ states for all x and that Fe ions are Fe2+-Fe3+ mixed-valent for x > 0. The valence states of Fe ions are found to be nearly trivalent for x=0, and decreases with increasing x from being nearly trivalent (v(Fe)~ 3) for x=0 to v(Fe)~ 2.6 for x=0.12. The valence states of both Ti and Ba ions do not change for all x < 0.12. Based on the obtained valence states of Fe ions, the electronic and magnetic properties of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) are explored., 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

A total of 48 patients undergoing surgical decompression of the ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel between February 2010 and May 2013 were retrospectively studied to determine changes in the cross-sectional area of the nerve by the technique of neurosonography. The mean follow-up was 46 months. Post-operative follow-up examination of the cross-sectional area of the ulnar nerve showed a slight reduction in the mean value from 13.8 mm2 (pre-operative) to 12.9 mm2 (post-operative). Of the 48 patients, 36 showed a reduction in the cross-sectional area. No correlation was detected between the clinical and sonographic outcomes. Ultrasound seems to be of limited value in the post-operative assessment of patients with entrapment neuropathy of the ulnar nerve. Level of Evidence: IV
