Sexual dimorphism has been reported in all extant echinoderm classes except crinoids, but has never been examined from a phylogenetic, biogeographical, or life-history perspective. This review provides a literature survey of sexual dimorphism in holothuroids and uses this dataset to analyze putative drivers. Sexually dimorphic genital papillae were found in Persiculida and Dendrochirotida but not in other holothuroid taxa. No planktotrophic species (feeding larvae) had known genital dimorphism, though many lecithotrophs (non-feeding larvae) displayed clear morphological differences between male and female papillae. Males with genital dimorphism had digitate or extensible papillae while females had unbranched papillae. Extensible papillae were common among males in brooding species, suggesting an adaptive advantage for certain reproductive strategies such as sperm transfer or pseudo-copulation. Digitate papillae bearing many gonopore openings were common among free-spawning, lecithotrophic males (~ 80% of species) and may serve to disperse sperm into the water column. Finally, we found that external dimorphism of the genital papillae in a case study of the dendrochirotid Cucumaria frondosa (Gunnerus, 1767) provided a reliable method of sex determination. These results suggest that genital dimorphism among dendrochirotid sea cucumbers is widespread and may facilitate determination of sex in the field where sacrificing animals is not practical.

Huntington’s disease (HD) is caused by an abnormal expansion of CAG trinucleotide repeats encoding polyglutamine (polyQ) in the first exon of the huntingtin (htt) gene. Despite considerable efforts, the pathogenesis of Huntington’s disease (HD) remains largely unclear due to a paucity of models that can reliably reproduce the pathological characteristics of HD. Here, we report a neuronal cell model of HD using the previously established tetracycline regulated rat neuroprogenitor cell line, HC2S2. Stable expression of enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) tagged-htt exon 1 (referred to as 28Q and 74Q, respectively) in the HC2S2 cells did not affect rapid neuronal differentiation. However, compared to the cells expressing wild type htt, the cell line expressing mutant htt showed an increase in time-dependent cell death and neuritic degeneration, and displayed increased vulnerability to oxidative stress. Increased protein aggregation during the process of neuronal aging or when the cells were exposed to oxidative stress reagents was detected in the cell line expressing 74Q but not in its counterpart. These results suggest that the neuroprogenitor cell lines mimic the major neuropathological characteristics of HD and may provide a useful tool for studying the neuropathogenesis of HD and for high-throughput screening of therapeutic compounds.

Melanoma of the anorectum represents

Aim The Rapid Access Diagnosis and Remedy (RADAR) clinic combines 2-week wait (TWW) specialist consultation with ‘straight-to-test’ flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) for left-sided ‘red-flag’ TWW criteria (excluding right-sided mass or iron-deficiency anaemia). The study aims were to determine the effectiveness of RADAR in differentiating colorectal cancer from benign disease and to evaluate the need for whole colonic investigation (WCI) following FS, in symptomatic patients. Method Prospectively collated data of all RADAR patients from November 2005 to November 2009 were analysed, excluding patients referred internally for a FS. The local histology database was later interrogated to detect any missed cancers. Results Of 1690 patients (729 men; median (range) age: 68 (18–96) years) assessed in RADAR, 84 were excluded. Colorectal cancer (CRC) was diagnosed in 117 (7.3%). Eighty-seven cancers were diagnosed on the day of attendance and a further 13 within a week (88.9% overall). Two patients after a cancer-free FS were found to have a right-sided CRC on WCI (0.24%) and one synchronous cancer was found. No patient with a cancer-free FS having a WCI was subsequently found to have CRC at a median of 35 (12–58) months. Conclusion Flexible sigmoidoscopy, in the context of an endoscopy unit TWW clinic, allows same-day diagnosis of most patients referred with left-sided symptoms, and immediate reassurance and treatment of most benign diagnoses. For these patients, the use of routine WCI following a cancer-free FS does not appear to be beneficial. Adopting this system would significantly reduce the number of barium enemas and colonoscopies currently performed.

Clinical and sub-clinical varicoceles are associated with infertility and abnormal sperm parameters. Percutaneous embolization is a minimally invasive, safe, outpatient method of treatment which is cost effective in comparison to surgery. This study is a retrospective review of embolization of the spermatic vein using stainless steel occluding spring coils, performed in 116 males from two infertility clinics. Follow-up results were complete in 87 patients of which 79 (91%) were successful both technically and clinically and all had sperm analysis performed both before and within 2 years after embolization. There was a highly significant increase in motility (mean 35% before, mean 46% after, p < 0.001). Sperm density showed a trend towards improvement, but only p < 0.10, and there was no significant change in semen volume or morphology. The partners of 29 men (33%) became pregnant in a total of 241 years of follow-up.

Sclerotinia minor (Jagger) Kohn is a serious and increasingly prevalent pathogen of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). Peanut stem tissues were reported to differ in their resistance to S. minor, but field performance is not always correlated with laboratory evaluations of resistance to Sclerotinia diseases in other crops. Differences in genotype performance in field and laboratory results may reflect differences in mechanisms of resistance. The objective of this study was to characterize mechanisms of resistance to S. minor in selected peanut genotypes by using agar culture tests, wounded and nonwounded stem inoculations, and field trials. For the culture test, sap was expressed from five genotypes with different levels of field-resistance to S. minor. Each extract was incorporated into an agar medium, which was overlaid with a dialysis membrane. The fungus produced distinctive infection hyphae on the media. Genotype extracts differentially affected size of terminal and secondary hyphae and the number of hyphae per organized cluster. Nine genotypes were evaluated for resistance to S. minor in two stem inoculation tests. Inoculation sites were wounded in the first method, and were not wounded in the second method. Significant differences in lesion size were found with both methods, but more differences were found among genotypes in the nonwounded inoculation. Genotype performance in culture and stem inoculation tests was not correlated with performance in the field. These studies demonstrated that although some genotypes had resistance to stem colonization by S. minor, other mechanisms account for most of the resistance expressed in the field

Acute stoma prolapse most commonly occurs following emergency surgery, frequently in patients with significant medical co-morbidities. Correction often requires re-laparotomy and resiting of the stoma, placing an already frail patient at risk of further morbidity. An elderly patient experienced an end colostomy prolapse 14 days following emergency laparotomy. A novel technique was employed using the CONTOUR® curved stapling device to excise the prolapsed segment, under a brief period of intravenous sedation, thereby avoiding the sequelae of general anaesthetic. No complications were experienced, and the patient was deemed fit for discharge 5-days post re-intervention.

To determine if hypercoagulability is associated with contrast, surgical trauma was studied in a canine model. Contrast increased in the right heart and aorta after laparotomy, but not after anesthesia alone in either the right or the left heart. The inferior vena cava had the largest amount of contrast after surgery, implying that contrast development was primarily a local response to injury. The cellular composition of this contrast was not determined, but it occurred in the absence of changes in systemic rheologic or hematologic parameters and was not affected by heparin administration.

Hepatic epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (HEH) is a rare, low grade malignant neoplasm of endothelial origin which is difficult to diagnose and has a variable outcome. We review five HEH cases from our centre with the aim of identifying clinical predictors of outcome and various therapeutic options. A search was made on the WA Liver Transplant registry for cases with histologically confirmed HEH. Their medical records were reviewed. A literature search was conducted through Medline using terms to compare the results from this series with those of other series. Five patients were identified to have HEH. The mean age was 44.2years (range 34-53years). Four of five patients presented with dyspepsia and two patients had clinical evidence of portal hypertension with ascites. Two patients had radiologically diffuse disease and three patients had discrete nodular liver involvement. The mean duration from presentation of symptoms to diagnosis of HEH was 26.8months. Liver transplantation was performed in one patient with diffuse HEH who is alive with no disease recurrence at 3years. Three patients with radiologically stable disease followed with 6monthly surveillance imaging are currently alive and well. The median survival of all five patients was 5years (range 1.5-16years) at the time of follow up. These results support the role of surveillance alone for patients with focal and radiologically stable disease. Patients with diffuse HEH with hepatic decompensation should be considered for transplantation. However, numbers are small and an international registry is required to make firm comparisons.

SummaryA non-stasis canine model of thrombogenicity has been used to evaluate batches of high purity factor IX concentrates from 4 manufacturers and a conventional prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC). Platelets, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen, fibrin(ogen) degradation products and fibrinopeptide A (FPA) were monitored before and after infusion of concentrate. Changes in FPA were found to be the most sensitive and reproducible indicator of thrombogenicity after infusion of batches of the PCC at doses of between 60 and 180 IU/kg, with a dose related delayed increase in FPA occurring. Total FPA generated after 100-120 IU/kg of 3 batches of PCC over the 3 h time course was 9-12 times that generated after albumin infusion. In contrast the amounts of FPA generated after 200 IU/kg of the 4 high purity factor IX products were in all cases similar to albumin infusion. It was noted that some batches of high purity concentrates had short NAPTTs indicating that current in vitro tests for potential thrombogenicity may be misleading in predicting the effects of these concentrates in vivo.

Understanding the cause of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed deterioration during storage will assist in the development of accurate laboratory tests to evaluate seed vigor. This study was designed to investigate the changes that occur in mitochondria! respiration during the early stages of soybean seed deterioration. High-quality seed lots of ‘Desoto’ and ‘Union’ soybean were stored at 25 °C and 115 g kg⁻¹ seed moisture. Seed quality (germination and vigor) and conductivity of leachate from embryonic axes were measured at monthly intervals during storage. Mitochondrial State 3 (ST 3) respiration rates and respiratory control ratios (RCR) were measured from excised axes of samples after 24 h of imbibition. Germination remained high for seeds of both cultivars throughout storage; however, seed vigor (as measured by accelerated aging) declined significantly after 7 and 10 months for Union and Desoto, respectively. Conductivity of the leachate from excised axes for both cultivars increased early during storage prior to detectable changes in whole seed vigor. State 3 respiration rates of mitochondria from axes decreased throughout storage and RCR values declined after 2 months for Union and after 4 months for Desoto. Decreases in ST 3 respiration rates and RCR in both cultivars preceded measurable declines in whole-seed vigor and correlated with increases in the conductivity of axes leachate. To explore the treatment effect of EGb 761((R)) (EGb) in Alzheimer's disease depending on baseline severity.We applied stratification to the intent-to-treat data set collected during a 52-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multicenter study with 120 mg of EGb, using cutoff points of 23 and 14 for the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score. Outcome measures used were the cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog) and the Geriatric Evaluation by Relative's Rating Instrument (GERRI).In the severity stratum 1 (MMSE23), the placebo group did not show significant changes, while the EGb group improved significantly by 1.7 points on the ADAS-Cog and by 0.09 points on the GERRI. In the severity stratum 2 (MMSE24), the placebo group worsened by 4.1 points on the ADAS-Cog and 0.18 points on the GERRI, whereas the EGb group showed 60% less decline on the ADAS-Cog (treatment difference of 2.5 points) and no change on the GERRI (treatment difference of 0.25 points). The most severely impaired subgroup (MMSE15) showed slightly more pronounced worsening for both treatment groups. However, in comparison to placebo, EGb induced virtually the same magnitude of effect as was observed in the entire stratum 2.The results of this retrospective analysis indicated that a treatment effect favorable to EGb could be observed with respect to cognitive performance (p = 0.02) and social functioning (p = 0.001) regardless of the stage of dementia, whether mild or moderately severe. However, the relative changes from baseline measured at endpoint depended heavily on the severity at baseline. Improvement was observed in the group of patients with very mild to mild cognitive impairment, while in more severe dementia, the mean EGb effect should be considered more in terms of stabilization or slowing down of worsening, as compared to the greater deterioration observed with placebo.

Sexual dysfunction has long been noted as both a symptom of depressive illness and as a side effect of many of the medications used to treat depression. Although most people suffering from a major depressive illness would like to be sexually active, half experience a decrease in desire or sexual performance. Antidepressant medications often interfere with several parts of the sexual response. This review compares data from different types of research into the effect of antidepressant medications on the sexual response: case reports, chart reviews, and single- and double-blind studies with and without active control medications. From this review, it is clear that antidepressants of most classes interfere with human sexual functioning, with the notable exceptions of bupropion and nefazodone.

The procedures used in the treatment of peripheral arterial disease are evolving constantly. The most rapid changes have been in the use of endovascular techniques in which the interventions are occurring from within the blood vessel either in the radiology suite percutaneously or in the operating theatre by open access. The following article attempts to bring together these two disciplines and to address them with a unified approach.

We report the results of a double-blind study comparing the efficacy and safety of low-dose (10-50 mg) and high-dose (20-100 mg) ranges of gepirone-extended release (ER) and placebo in 145 outpatients with major depressive disorder. At multiple time points and endpoint (Week 6), statistically significant reductions in Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) scores were recorded for high-dose gepirone-ER compared to placebo. Analysis of the 17-item HAM-D and 28-item HAM-D scores indicated a relatively early onset of antidepressant efficacy with statistically significant results at treatment Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6. A rapid response was evident in the high-dose group, beginning at Week 1 (p.05). The most frequently reported adverse experiences were headache, nausea, dizziness, and insomnia. The results indicate that gepirone-ER is clearly superior to placebo in terms of antidepressant efficacy. When used at higher doses, gepirone-ER appears to be efficacious, safe, and well-tolerated in depressed out-patients.

Splenic infarction is a rare complication of pancreatitis. We present the case of a 34-year-old woman, who had undergone previous drainage of a pancreatic pseudocyst, and who represented with left upper quadrant pain. Absence of enhancement of the splenic parenchyma during contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) allowed confident diagnosis of complete splenic infarction. A later CT scan revealed splenic cavitation with spontaneous decompression into the stomach. The aetiology of these unusual complications of pancreatitis is discussed.

A multisite, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was made of 177 patients with the diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder. After a 1-week placebo lead-in, they were randomized to 4 weeks of treatment by placebo or one of two doses of a novel, nonsedating compound that had demonstrated reduction of fear-avoidance behavior in animals. Efficacy was not demonstrated at a significant level. A further analysis of 142 patients who completed the treatment was undertaken to test the hypothesis that efficacy might be demonstrated by the single-rater procedure (SRP), which eliminates interrater error variance. The 80 patients who were examined by the same clinical rater for all six visits were compared with the 62 patients who had the multiple-rater procedure (MRP), ratings by two or more clinicians sequentially over the six visits. A two-way analysis of variance showed significantly greater discrimination of placebo and drug for the MRP group. The results provided no support for the frequent preference for the SRP. The MRP may include less psychotherapeutic interaction with the patient and less researcher bias in ratings.

The history of the treatment of anorexia nervosa includes the majority of psychological and somatic therapies devised by psychiatrists, psychologists, and general physicians. We review the history of one of these treatments, electrical convulsive therapy (ECT), and discuss three patients treated with ECT for primary anorexia nervosa. Two had a positive response to this treatment, one did not. She later responded favorably to a course of treatment with fluoxetine.

An acute phase response has been identified during mid-gestation in bitches by determination of the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. In four pregnant bitches, a large increase in CRP during mid-gestation was followed by a second increase after parturition. In three pregnant bitches, a similar increase was observed during mid-gestation but the second (post parturition) increase was not detected. In two pregnant bitches only a small rise was observed in mid-gestation. No increase in CRP was observed in the serum of two bitches that were not mated following oestrus or in the serum of two bitches that were mated but did not become pregnant. One bitch was diagnosed as pregnant by palpation but did not produce a litter and did not have a mid-gestation increase in CRP. However, this animal did show an acute phase response shortly after oestrus.

Oocytes were collected from ovaries of bitches, at various stages of the oestrous cycle, after routine sterilization. Cumulus-enclosed oocytes were cultured for 0-72 h in a modified M-199 medium containing 10% oestrous bitch serum and 20 micrograms oestradiol ml-1. For oocytes surrounded by two or more layers of cumulus cells, an increase in the expression of mRNA transcripts for zona pellucida glycoprotein 3 (ZP3) was seen and reached peak levels after 48 h culture in vitro. Histological assessment showed that 39% of these oocytes had extruded their first polar body after 24 h culture in vitro. When these in vitro matured oocytes were transferred to oviduct cell monolayers and inseminated with fresh dog spermatozoa in Medium-199 supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum and 50 mg gentamicin sulfate ml-1, penetration of the zona pellucida started 1 h after insemination for oocytes that had been cultured for 48 and 72 h. At 12 h after insemination both male and female pronuclei were seen in 37.5% and 20% of the oocytes incubated for 48 and 72 h, respectively. No further development was seen.

Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) was administered as a depot injection to two adult male dogs. One was injected with 75 mg as a depot injection once a month for 2 months and the other with 50 mg at 2-weekly intervals for 1 month, followed by 100 mg at 2-weekly intervals for a further 2 months. Two other male beagles were given gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists (nafarelin derivative no. 49947 and nafarelin acetate) at a dose of 50 micrograms day-1 for either 22 or 23 days. The profiles of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone were monitored before and during the treatment periods, and changes in the dogs' testes, epididymides and prostate glands were determined post mortem. In the MPA-treated animals, LH was suppressed for only very brief periods. In contrast, in the dogs treated with GnRH agonist, LH and testosterone concentrations were suppressed for most of the treatment period. In the MPA-treated animals, histological changes were seen mainly in the head of the epididymis, and in the acrosome region of the spermatozoa still present in this region of the male reproductive tract. The acrosome, instead of being closely applied to the sperm head, was in contact only in the most anterior areas, with the remainder forming a fan-like projection, indicating increasing detachment from the sperm head. In the dogs treated with GnRH agonist there was clear evidence of cessation of normal spermatogenesis in most of the seminiferous tubules. Changes in the histology of the head of the epididymis were similar to (but more profound than) those found in the dogs treated with MPA. Seminal changes were demonstrated in ejaculates collected during the latter stages of the treatment period.

Real-time B-mode ultrasound imaging was carried out, using a scanner of moderate quality, on 40 fresh bitch cadavers to identify the presence of ovaries and significant ovarian structures. The results indicated that accurate identification of the ovaries depended on the presence of significant follicles or corpora lutea (CL). The findings were verified at post-mortem examination. The study was continued by scanning 35 live bitches using three different scanning units of increasingly improved quality to show that the process of ovulation could be assessed with reasonable accuracy with improved quality of equipment, although the exact fate of the follicle could not be imaged. The results were judged against assays for blood circulating progesterone. A final group of seven live bitches were scanned with a high-grade scanner using an annular phased-array transducer to attempt to image the process of ovulation. The non-echogenic follicle disappeared and was replaced by the CL that was hypoechoic with respect to surrounding tissue, thus allowing accurate assessment of the time of ovulation. This was confirmed by progesterone assay.

The study extends work in informative labeling, fear appeals, and negative information effects. Respondents were given two labels from two packages, one of which contained the experimental treatment. Warning strength was manipulated at three levels: weak, medium, and strong. The data show that, unlike labels on prescription medications, non-prescription warning labels tend to discourage use of the product. Results have implications for information theorists, marketers, and public policy makers.

Artificial insemination with frozen semen was used to breed beagles homozygous for a deficiency in clotting factor VII, with plasma concentrations of 2-3% of normal adult beagle pooled plasma. The factor VII-deficient beagles were used to determine if factor VII activity has a role in the thrombogenic activity of prothrombin complex concentrates (PCCs) containing factors II, IX and X by evaluating changes in selected indicators of thrombogenicity. No differences were seen between the responsiveness of the factor VII-deficient and normal beagles, indicating that the thrombogenic activities of PCCs are mediated via effects on the intrinsic clotting system.

Estazolam, a triazolobenzodiazepine with an intermediate elimination half-life, has been shown previously to be an effective and safe hypnotic in insomniacs without concomitant psychiatric illness. Our study of the efficacy of estazolam in patients with insomnia associated with generalized anxiety disorder began when 108 patients meeting criteria for generalized anxiety disorder (mean total score of Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety [HAM-A] = 22.0 +/- 3.1 [SD]) and insomnia were given single-blind placebo for 7 nights. Nine patients whose anxiety and/or insomnia improved were dropped as placebo responders. The remaining 99 patients were randomly allocated (1:1) to double-blind treatment with either estazolam 2.0 mg or matching placebo for 7 nights. Hypnotic efficacy, as determined by patient-completed sleep questionnaires, was statistically significant for estazolam 2.0 mg versus placebo for all sleep indices (p less than 0.01). Patients treated with estazolam 2.0 mg showed significantly greater improvement in anxiety than those receiving placebo on the mean total score of HAM-A ([placebo, -3.4; estazolam, -7.1; p less than 0.001] and without the insomnia item [placebo, -2.7; estazolam, -5.5; p less than 0.001]). Anxiety scores on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory showed greater improvement in the estazolam group, but without statistical significance (p = 0.237). Estazolam 2.0 mg is an effective hypnotic in patients with generalized anxiety disorder and appears to have a favorable anxiolytic action.

Urine samples were collected from 32 male dogs and examined for the presence of spermatozoa. Twenty-eight dogs were found to have spermatozoa in their urine, indicating that spermatogenesis is occurring normally.

Summary Participant modelling, a behaviourally-orientated treatment technique, is an effect method of treating phobias associated with minor medical procedures or apparatus such as needles or intravenous catheters. The steps in this technique are described and two cases of severe needle phobias successfully treated with participant modelling are presented to illustrate further its application.

The efficacy of pneumatic compression of the lower limbs using inflatable leg splints in prevention of hypotension during spinal anaesthesia was assessed in an open study of 46 patients undergoing elective caesarean section. All patients received 15 ml/kg of Hartmann's solution before spinal anaesthesia and were tilted to the left to minimise aortocaval compression. Splints were rapidly inflated to a pressure of 5.3 kPa immediately after institution of the block in treated patients. Blood pressure was measured by a cuff method at 1-min intervals until the commencement of surgery. Hypotension was less common (P less than 0.05) and less severe (P less than 0.05) in splint-treated patients, but the incidence was unacceptably high in both treated (48%) and control (83%) groups.

A finite element method using different trial and test spaces is introduced for solving the neutron transport equation in spherical geometry. It is shown that the widely used discrete ordinates method can also be thought of as such a finite element technique, in which integrals appearing in the difference equations are replaced by one-point Gauss quadrature formulas (midpoint rule). Comparison of accuracy between the new method and the discrete ordinates method is discussed, and numerical examples are given to illustrate the greater accuracy of the new technique.

Inspection of conductor after long service has implicated rubber bushing material, on the outside, and the galvanized strands, on the inside, as providing potential galvanic sites for the initiation of rapid aluminum corrosion. Therefore, the galvanic corrosion of aluminum in contact with graphite-loaded neoprene rubber, hot-dip galvanized steel and steel was assessed in a cyclic wet/dry exposure test using mixed-salts spray solutions containing appropriate ratios of sulfate and chloride ion. Aluminum was found to corrode at between 3 to 6 times its uncoupled rate when associated with the rubber material. While the eta-phase, relatively pure Zn, galvanized layer remained intact, galvanic corrosion of aluminum was slow. The effectiveness of grease, used as a corrosion preventative in galvanised steel reinforced overhead electrical power conductors, was evaluated by a variety of methods. The ability of ions to penetrate grease was assessed by an electrochemical technique and by solution analysis. The structure of free grease films was observed by scanning laser optical microscopy to give insight into the nature of ion motion. Changes in the grease both after exposure to the outdoor environment and after laboratory testing were evaluated by optical microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the corrosion performance of grease coated galvanised steel wire in a mixed salts spray, wet-dry cycle test was evaluated by electrochemical potential measurements. Morphological examination of free grease films indicated the presence of features at the surface and within the body of the films. Ten children developed intussusception after laparotomy. The bowel obstruction caused by the intussusception was evident within 8 days of major laparotomy in 8 children and within 39 days in the other two. It developed after the usual postoperative laparotomy ileus, and did not respond to normal non-operative treatment not even to a barium enema. There was one palpable abdominal mass and no rectal bleeding. Only at surgery was the correct diagnosis made. Eight of 10 intussusceptions affected only the small-bowel; most of them were ileoileal, but 2 were ileocolic. Seven of the 10 intussusceptions needed only manual reduction. Postoperative recovery was uneventful.

Stumpy is a new chondrodystrophic mutant in the mouse. The condition is inherited as a fully penetrant Mendelian recessive, and is not allelic with brachymorphic, achondroplasia, or stubby-three similar, previously described mutants. No chromosomal position has yet been assigned to the gene. Phenotypically, stumpy mice are chondrodystrophic dwarfs with all cartilage-formed bones in the skeleton affected. The condition differs from the usual chondrodystrophy described in mice in that proximal elements in the limbs are affected more than distal ones.

The majority of studies of primary anorexia nervosa have focused on adolescent females. Relatively little has been written on anorectic males, and there has been scarcely any documentation of the occurrence of this disorder in adult males. The present paper describes three cases of adult-onset primary anorexia nervosa in males. For each case, the history and diagnostic patterns are considered, followed by a discussion of the course of outpatient treatment. The therapy was multimodal and included elements of behavioral contingency management, cognitive therapy, and dynamic psychotherapy. Suggestions are made for future research.

Behaviour, vaginal cytology and plasma progesterone concentrations were monitored during oestrus in a group of 6 beagle bitches before intrauterine insemination with frozen semen. At intervals after insemination, the reproductive tracts were examined for evidence of conception, which occurred in 5 of the bitches. One pregnant bitch had received treatment with stilboestrol before insemination.

Three bulimic patients with major depressive episodes developed delirium after trazodone administration. These cases raise a question about the susceptibility of bulimic patients to developing delirium when treated with trazodone.
