1. Three-dimensional dynamics of fluctuations appearing during pellet ablation process around a pellet in a fusion plasma experiment

Abstract

Understanding pellet ablation physics is crucial to realizing efficient fueling into a high temperature plasma for the steady state operation of ITER and future fusion reactors. Here we report the first observation of the formation of fluctuation structures in the pellet plasmoid during the pellet ablation process by a fast camera in a medium-sized fusion device, Heliotron J. The fluctuation has a normalized fluctuation level of ~ 15% and propagates around the moving pellet across the magnetic field. By comparing the fluctuation structures with the shape of magnetic field lines calculated with the field line tracing code, we successfully reconstruct the spatio-temporal structure of the fluctuations during the pellet ablation process. The fluctuations are located at the locations displaced toroidally from the pellet and propagate in the cross-field direction around the pellet axis along the field line, indicating a three-dimensional behavior and structure of fluctuations. The fluctuation would be driven by a strong inhomogeneity formed around the pellet and invoke the relaxation of the gradient through a cross-field transport induced by the fluctuations, which could affect the pellet ablation and pellet fueling processes. Abstract

Construction of the JT-60SA tokamak was completed on schedule in March 2020. Manufacture and assembly of all the main tokamak components satisfied technical requirements, including dimensional accuracy and functional performances. Development of the plasma heating systems and diagnostics have also progressed, including the demonstration of the favourable electron cyclotron range of frequency (ECRF) transmission at multiple frequencies and the achievement of long sustainment of a high-energy intense negative ion beam. Development of all the tokamak operation control systems has been completed, together with an improved plasma equilibrium control scheme suitable for superconducting tokamaks including ITER. For preparation of the tokamak operation, plasma discharge scenarios have been established using this advanced equilibrium controller. Individual commissioning of the cryogenic system and the power supply system confirmed that these systems satisfy design requirements including operational schemes contributing directly to ITER, such as active control of heat load fluctuation of the cryoplant, which is essential for dynamic operation in superconducting tokamaks. The integrated commissioning (IC) is started by vacuum pumping of the vacuum vessel and cryostat, and then moved to cool-down of the tokamak and coil excitation tests. Transition to the super-conducting state was confirmed for all the TF, EF and CS coils. The TF coil current successfully reached 25.7 kA, which is the nominal operating current of the TF coil. For this nominal toroidal field of 2.25 T, ECRF was applied and an ECRF plasma was created. The IC was, however, suspended by an incident of over current of one of the superconducting equilibrium field coil and He leakage caused by insufficient voltage holding capability at a terminal joint of the coil. The unique importance of JT-60SA for H-mode and high-β steady-state plasma research has been confirmed using advanced integrated modellings. These experiences of assembly, IC and plasma operation of JT-60SA contribute to ITER risk mitigation and efficient implementation of ITER operation.

Abstract

Advances in TEM techniques have spurred a renewed interest in a wide variety of research fields. A rather recent track within these endeavors is the use of TEM for in situ imaging in liquids. In this article, we show the fabrication of a liquid cell for TEM observations which we call the nanocuvette. The structure consists of a nanohole film sandwiched by carbon films, sealing liquid in the holes. The hole film can be produced using a variety of materials, tailored for the desired application. Since the fabrication is based on self-assembly, it is both cheap and straightforward. Compared to previously reported liquid cells, this structure allows for thinner liquid layers with better controlled cell structures, making it possible to achieve a high resolution even at lower acceleration voltages and electron doses. We demonstrate a resolution corresponding to an information transfer up to ∼2 nm at 100 kV for molecular imaging. Apart from the advantages arising from the thin liquid layer, the nanocuvette also enables the possibility to study liquid-solid interfaces at the side walls of the nanoholes. We illustrate the possibilities of the nanocuvette by studying several model systems: electron beam induced growth dynamics of silver nanoparticles in salt solution, polymer deposition from solution, and imaging of nonstained antibodies in solution. Finally, we show how the inclusion of a plasmonically active gold layer in the nanocuvette structure enables optical confirmation of successful liquid encapsulation prior to TEM studies. The nanocuvette provides an easily fabricated and flexible platform which can help further the understanding of reactions, processes, and conformation of molecules and atoms in liquid environments.

Abstract

Équipe 107 : Physique des plasmas chauds; International audience; In a collisionless plasma, it is known that linearly stable modes can be destabilized (subcritically) by the presence of structures in phase space. However, nonlinear growth requires the presence of a seed structure with a relatively large threshold in amplitude. We demonstrate that, in the presence of another, linearly unstable (supercritical) mode, wave-wave coupling can provide a seed, which is significantly below the threshold, but can still grow by (and only by) the collaboration of fluid and kinetic nonlinearities. By modeling the subcritical mode kinetically, and the impact of the supercritical mode by simple wave-wave coupling equations, it is shown that this new kind of subcritical instability can be triggered, even when the frequency of the supercritical mode is rapidly sweeping. The model is applied to the bursty onset of geodesic acoustic modes in a LHD experiment. The model recovers several key features such as relative amplitude, time scales, and phase relations. It suggests that the strongest bursts are subcritical instabilities, driven by this mechanism of combined fluid and kinetic nonlinearities.

Abstract

In this paper, a number of new approximations are introduced to estimate the perturbative diffusivity (χ), convectivity (V), and damping (τ) in cylindrical geometry. For this purpose, the harmonic components of heat waves induced by localized deposition of modulated power are used. The approximations are based on semi-infinite slab approximations of the heat equation. The main result is the approximation of χ under the influence of V and τ based on the phase of two harmonics making the estimate less sensitive to calibration errors. To understand why the slab approximations can estimate χ well in cylindrical geometry, the relationships between heat transport models in slab and cylindrical geometry are studied. In addition, the relationship between amplitude and phase with respect to their derivatives, used to estimate χ, is discussed. The results are presented in terms of the relative error for the different derived approximations for different values of frequency, transport coefficients, and dimensionless radius. The approximations show a significant region in which χ, V, and τ can be estimated well, but also regions in which the error is large. Also, it is shown that some compensation is necessary to estimate V and τ in a cylindrical geometry. On the other hand, errors resulting from the simplified assumptions are also discussed showing that estimating realistic values for V and τ based on infinite domains will be difficult in practice. This paper is the first part (Part I) of a series of three papers. In Part II and Part III, cylindrical approximations based directly on semi-infinite cylindrical domain (outward propagating heat pulses) and inward propagating heat pulses in a cylindrical domain, respectively, will be treated.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility of 99Tcm-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (99Tcm-MAG3) clearance and to compare it with that of 131I-orthoiodohippurate (131I-OIH), which is widely used in clinical practice. Twelve young healthy volunteers with a mean age of 23.4 years (range 19-28) were enrolled in the study. The investigations were repeated at an interval of 1 month under similar physiological conditions. Each volunteer received a simultaneous injection of 99Tcm-MAG3 and 131I-OIH that was commercially available in an already labelled form. Blood samples were obtained at 44 and 104 min post-injection. Clearance values were calculated using the two-sample method. The mean (+/- S.D.) change from the first to the second measurement was -7.1 +/- 11.1% for 99Tcm-MAG3 and 1.7 +/- 13.6% for 131I-OIH. There were no significant differences between the first and the second measurements of 99Tcm-MAG3 and 131I-OIH clearance, respectively. 99Tcm-MAG3 clearance was shown to be very similar to that of 131I-OIH in healthy volunteers.

Abstract

Simultaneous assessment of regional adrenergic activity and perfusion with 123 I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine ( 123 I-MIBG) and 201 Tl in various organs was performed in 13 patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) and 13 subjects without heart failure. In order to reduce the crosstalk of 201 Tl to the 123 I energy window to less than 5%, a dose of 123 -MSBG more than five times greater than that of 201 Tl was administered following 201 Tl scintigraphy. Regional uptake of 201 Tl (% dose) was significantly increased in the heart (left ventricle) and lung (both P < 0.01) in the patients with CHF. The increased global cardiac uptake could have been related to the enlarged left ventricle. The patterns of regional uptake of 123 I-MIBG (% dose) at 15 min were similar to those of 201 Tl, suggesting that early 123 I-MSBG uptake could in part depend on regional perfusion in both groups. At 3 h, regional uptake of 123 I-MIBG was significantly increased in the heart, lung and kidney (all P < 0.01) in the patients with CHF. The delayed 123 I-MIBG uptake indicates the degree of neuronal accumulation of the tracer, and therefore reflects adrenergic activity. Interestingly, the cardiac 123 I-MIBG (adrenergic activity) to 201 Tl (unit of perfusion) ratio decreased significantly in the heart (P < 0.01) but increased significantly in the kidney (P < 0.01) in the patients with CHF compared with the control group. Abstract

To determine the effect of exercise intensity on regional blood flow in exercising and resting leg muscles and organs, we assessed relative changes in the regional distribution of 201Tl during one-leg ergometer exercise and at rest by whole-body scintigraphy as an estimate of regional blood flow changes in 10 healthy males. The regional 201Tl activity was expressed as a percentage of the whole-body activity, and relative changes in each region were compared to those at the anaerobic threshold (AT) and at peak exercise. In the legs, the distribution of 201Tl in the exercising thigh and calf increased significantly at the AT to 390.7 and 219.2% respectively of resting levels (both P < 0.01), but remained unchanged the resting thigh from rest to peak exercise. Conversely its distribution in the resting calf decreased significantly at the AT to 60.0% of the resting level (P < 0.01). However, there were no significant differences between AT and peak exercise. In the organs, the distribution of 201Tl in the lung, liver, spleen and kidneys decreased significantly at the AT to 88.4 +/- 10.4%, 67.0 +/- 11.5%, 62.4 +/- 11.8% and 67.0 +/- 8.6% respectively of resting levels (all P < 0.01). Redistribution of blood flow to the exercising leg occurs predominantly during mild to moderate exercise. Therefore, blood flow in the leg during strenuous exercise depends primarily upon an increase in cardiac output. The splanchnic organs are the major sources of redistribution.

Abstract

Two different microscopic phases have been observed via inelastic neutron scattering for superfluid helium confined within highly monodisperse, smooth, and unidimensional silica pores. When the helium forms a thin film on the pore walls, it supports a dramatically modified phonon-roton spectrum as well as a 2D surface roton. The energies of these modified phonon-roton modes are consistent with predictions for a dilute, low-density film, while the energy of the 2D surface roton corresponds to that of a dense film. The relatively smooth and weak surface potential of the substrate permits the formation of a film with large dilute regions and only small compressed regions. When the pores are saturated with liquid, the modified phonon-roton spectrum disappears, and bulk-like modes coexist with the 2D surface roton. Presumably, bulk-like liquid occupies the core volume of the pores and high density liquid layers are present at the liquid-solid interface. Abstract

The progress in the understanding of the physics and the concurrent parameter extension in the large helical device since the last IAEA-FEC, in 2012 (Kaneko O et al 2013 Nucl. Fusion 53 095024), is reviewed. Plasma with high ion and electron temperatures (Ti(0) ~ Te(0) ~ 6 keV) with simultaneous ion and electron internal transport barriers is obtained by controlling recycling and heating deposition. A sign flip of the nondiffusive term of impurity/momentum transport (residual stress and convection flow) is observed, which is associated with the formation of a transport barrier. The impact of the topology of three-dimensional magnetic fields (stochastic magnetic fields and magnetic islands) on heat momentum, particle/impurity transport and magnetohydrodynamic stability is also discussed. In the steady state operation, a 48 min discharge with a line-averaged electron density of 1 × 1019 m−3 and with high electron and ion temperatures (Ti(0) ~ Te(0) ~ 2 keV), resulting in 3.36 GJ of input energy, is achieved.

Abstract

To improve the detectability of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, we have developed a new method, 'sequential subtraction scintigraphy' (SSS) with 99Tcm-labelled red blood cells (RBC). Sequential subtraction scintigrams were obtained by subtracting 5 min interval images from each other using a digital gamma camera. With this method, we are able to detect the bleeding site and calculate the bleeding rate earlier because of the lower background activity. The results of the present study demonstrate that the minimum detectable bleeding rate was 0.05 ml min-1 in both a phantom and an animal model. The minimum detectable activity volumes within 10 min were 0.5 ml by SSS and more that 3 ml by conventional non-subtraction scintigraphy (CNS). The bleeding rates calculated with the subtraction method correlated well with the actual syringe pump rates. The detectability of GI bleeding by SSS and CNS in animal models was compared using the area under receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves. The results showed that SSS significantly increased the area under the ROC curves from 0.55 +/- 0.05 to 0.79 +/- 0.04 for the 10 min image set and from 0.65 +/- 0.05 to 0.83 +/- 0.04 for the 30 min image set (Z = 5.45, P < 0.0001 and Z = 4.36, P < 0.0001, respectively). These results suggest that sequential subtraction scintigraphy with 99Tcm-RBC is an effective method for the early detection of GI bleeding when compared with the conventional non-subtraction method.

Abstract

Induction of cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) was observed in rat liver on administration of a high-protein diet. The enzyme activity in the liver of rats given 60% and 80% protein diet increased to 1.8- and 1.9-fold that in the liver of rats maintained on 20% protein diet, with about 2-fold increases in the levels of functional sGOT mRNA, measured by in vitro translation. Whereas the activity of mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase did not increase. Induction of cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase was also detected immunocytochemically.

Abstract

The progress of physical understanding as well as parameter improvement of net-current-free helical plasma is reported for the Large Helical Device since the last Fusion Energy Conference in Daejeon in 2010. The second low-energy neutral beam line was installed, and the central ion temperature has exceeded 7 keV, which was obtained by carbon pellet injection. Transport analysis of the high-T-i plasmas shows that the ion-thermal conductivity and viscosity decreased after the pellet injection although the improvement does not last long. The effort has been focused on the optimization of plasma edge conditions to extend the operation regime towards higher ion temperature and more stable high density and high beta. For this purpose a portion of the open helical divertors are being modified to the baffle-structured closed ones aimed at active control of the edge plasma. It is compared with the open case that the neutral pressure in the closed helical divertor increased by ten times as predicted by modelling. Studies of physics in a three-dimensional geometry are highlighted in the topics related to the response to a resonant magnetic perturbation at the plasma periphery such as edge-localized-mode mitigation and divertor detachment. Novel approaches of non-local and non-diffusive transport have also been advanced.
