Abstract

Similar to other bacteria,Brucellastrains require several biologically essential metals for their survivalin vitroandin vivo. Acquiring sufficient levels of some of these metals, particularly iron, manganese and zinc, is especially challenging in the mammalian host, where sequestration of these micronutrients is a well-documented component of both the innate and acquired immune responses. This review describes theBrucellametal transporters that have been shown to play critical roles in the virulence of these bacteria in experimental and natural hosts.

Abstract

Selective decontamination of the digestive tract (SDD) has been advocated to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and possibly other nosocomial infections. However, its incorporation into standard health care practices has been limited.Comprehensive literature search using www.pubmed.gov and derivative cross-references.The abundance of basic science and clinical literature largely supports the concept that the incidence of VAP declines after the introduction of SDD, although there are some controversial aspects. Several meta-analyses and recent controlled clinical trials have supported the benefit of SDD. A few years ago, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement introduced the "ventilator bundle," a set of simple evidence-based measures designed to reduce the incidence of pneumonia. These measures have been implemented rapidly throughout the country. Of the four initial measures (elevation of the head of the bed, daily "sedation vacations" with assessment of readiness for endotracheal extubation, prophylaxis against stress-related gastric mucosal hemorrhage, and deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis), only the first two affect the development of VAP either directly or indirectly.The evidence supporting SDD as a prevention measure for VAP is at least as good as that supporting the ventilator bundle, if not better. At many centers, a topical oral antiseptic (e.g., chlorhexidine) has been incorporated as a fifth element of the ventilator bundle.

Phenotypic evaluation of isogenic mutants derived from Brucella abortus 2308 indicates that the AlcR homolog DhbR (2,3- d i h ydroxy b enzoic acid [2,3-DHBA] biosynthesis r egulator) modulates the expression of the genes involved in 2,3-DHBA production, employing 2,3-DHBA or brucebactin as a coinducer.

Abstract

Williams syndrome (WS), also referred to as Williams-Beuren syndrome (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man 194050), is a congenital, multisystem disorder involving the cardiovascular, connective tissue, and central nervous systems.1 WS occurs in ≈1 in 10 000 live births2 as a result of the de novo deletion of ≈1.55 to 1.83 Mb on chromosome 7q11.23.3 Familial cases can occur but are far less common than de novo cases.4 The deletion involves 26 to 28 genes, including the ELN gene, which codes for the protein elastin.5 Hemizygosity of the ELN gene coding for elastin has been demonstrated to be responsible for the vascular pathology in WS.6 The remaining 25 to 27 deleted genes contribute to the phenotypic findings in patients with WS and have recently been reviewed in detail elsewhere.5 In 1961, Williams et al7 reported their experience with 4 patients with supravalvar aortic stenosis (SVAS), mental retardation, and abnormal facial features. The following year, Beuren and colleagues8 reported similar findings in 5 patients, and they subsequently reported detailed cardiac and angiographic data from 10 such patients.9 Their findings, combined with other characteristic features, led both groups to theorize that a previously unrecognized syndrome was the likely origin, a theory that led to the eponym Williams-Beuren syndrome. After the reports of Williams et al7 and Beuren et al8 were published, the basis for the diagnosis of WS was the presence of a constellation of distinctive phenotypic characteristics. Genetic analysis at that time was limited essentially to karyotyping and microscopic inspection of individual chromosomes, which Beuren et al9 reported in 3 of their patients. With improved molecular genetics diagnostic techniques, Ewart et al10 used fluorescent in situ hybridization to demonstrate hemizygosity of the ELN locus in patients with WS. …

Abstract

Class I molecules of the MHC are intimately involved in the development and function of CD8+ T cells. Small peptides, derived from endogenous proteins, bind within the Ag binding groove created by the beta-pleated sheets and alpha-helices of the alpha 1 and alpha 2 domains of the class I molecule. This peptide-MHC complex has been shown to influence allorecognition by CD8+ T cells. However, the precise role of peptide in alloantigen recognition remains unclear. We have previously shown that conformational changes induced in the class I molecules can be identified as specific alterations in serologic epitopes. These results suggested that alloreactive T cells may detect structural changes in MHC based on the nature of the peptide binding to the class I protein. Here, we have shown that, in at least some instances, alloreactivity may not depend on the recognition of a precise self-peptide but on an epitope on the class I molecule influenced by the peptide. The nature of specific peptides expressed by class I-bearing cells may, therefore, have a dramatic effect on T cell development, self-tolerance, and alloreactivity.

Abstract

An increasing number of publications related to the concept of recurrent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) has emerged in recent years. The clinical relevance of this publication trend could suggest failure to prevent VAP.Review of articles addressing recurrent VAP, which were scrutinized for their definitions and methodology, seeking to determine the actual meaning of "recurrence."A preponderance of the early papers on recurrent VAP used definitions that create the possibility and even, in some cases, the likelihood that what was being addressed actually was persistent VAP. These studies, mostly from the same investigator group, considered "recurrent" VAP to appear as early as three days after the initial diagnosis while patients were still receiving antibiotics to treat that initial episode. The blurring of the concepts of "recurrence" and "persistence" is apparent in the methodology and the results.Existing evidence-based guidelines regarding the prevention and treatment of VAP should be applied to reduce the incidence of (i.e., prevent) and treat VAP effectively. A distinction should be made between "recurrence" and "persistence" in order to determine whether clinical inadequacies exist in preventive or therapeutic practices, respectively. An objective process for defining the resolution of VAP should be developed to enable this distinction to be made.

Abstract

The long term goals of this research were to define the substrate oxidation pathways, the electron transport mechanisms, and the modes of energy conservation employed during the dissimilatory oxidation of sulfur practiced by various species of the thiobacilli. Specific adhesion of the thiobacilli to elemental sulfur was studied by electrical impedance, dynamic light scattering, laser Doppler velocimetry, and optical trapping methods. The conclusion is that the thiobacilli appear to express specific receptors that enable the bacteria to recognize and adhere to insoluble sulfur. The enzyme tetrathionate oxidase was purified from two species of the thiobacilli. Extensive structural and functional studies were conducted on adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate reductase purified from cell-free extracts of Thiobacillus denitrificans. The kinetic mechanism of rhodanese was studied.

Abstract

We report, through experimental observations and computer simulations, that atomic lattice interlocking can determine whether an object rolls or slides on a surface. We have quantitatively manipulated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a variety of substrates with an atomic force microscope (AFM) and observe rolling to occur only on graphite. We measure the forces when the CNT is in-registry with the graphite lattice, and observe rolling only in this lock-in state. Atomistic computer simulations identify the energy barriers for sliding and rolling, elucidate atomic-scale features of slip-roll motion, and explain the details of the lateral force data in terms of the intrinsic faceting of multiwall CNTs., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A continuously sampled signal is obtained by periodically placing a signal to zero. A straightforward closed form method is presented for restoration of continuously sampled bandlimited signals-even when the data is aliased. The sampled signal is simply multiplied by a periodic function specified by the duty cycle of the degradation and the severity of aliasing. This product is then placed through a filter with bandwidth equal to that of the signal. The filter acts as an interpolator and the original signal is restored.

The sensitivity of interpolation of the pth derivative of a band-limited signal directly from the signal's samples in the presence of additive stationary noise is considered. Oversampling and filtering generally decrease the interpolation noise level when the data noise is not band-limited. A lower bound on the interpolation noise level can be approached arbitrarily closely by increasing the sampling rate. The lower bound is equivalent to the noise level obtained by low-pass filtering and pth-order differentiation of the unsampled additive input noise.

Abstract

When a band-limited signal is sampled at its Nyquist rate, each sample is independent. When sampled in excess of that rate, the samples become dependent. Thus, if one or more samples are lost, they can be recovered from the remaining known values. Using Gerchberg's iterative algorithm applied to interpolation, we derive a closed form expression by which a finite number of data points can be regained from the remaining data in a uniformly oversampled signal. A second restoration algorithm-based on an observation due to Howard-is also presented.

Abstract

The MMPI responses of a poor and good final outcome group from a follow-up study of anorexia nervosa were compared with responses of a group of anorexic patients in the acute phase. The poor outcome group produced elevated scores in the psychopathological range except on scales 4, 5 and 9. No elevations occurred in the good outcome group and the MMPI thus discriminated significantly between different kinds of final outcome of anorexia nervosa. The profile of the patients in the acute phase at time of testing was not significantly different from the poor outcome group profile. In order to improve the predictive validity of the MMPI related to anorexia nervosa, the paper points to possible directions for further research.

Abstract

The results of a search for leptoquark (LQ) pairs in (85.2 ±3.7) pb-1 of pp̄ collider data collected by the DO experiments were presented. Scalar leptoquarks for the masses less than 98 GeV/c2, vector leptoquarks for masses less than 200 GeV/c2 and coupling which produced the minimum cross-section were excluded. Results showed absence of an evidence for leptoquark production and a limit was set on νν + jets as a function of the mass of leptoquark.

Abstract

DØ has measured the inclusive production cross section of W and Z bosons in a sample of 13 pb-1 of data collected at the Fermilab Tevatron. The cross sections, multiplied by their leptonic branching fractions, for production in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV are σWB(W→eν)=2.36±0.02±0.08±0.13 nb, σWB(W →μν)=2.09±0.06±0.22±0.11 nb, σZB(Z→e+e -)=0.218±0.008±0.008±0.012 nb, and σZB(Z →μ+μ -)=0.178±0.022±0.021±0.009 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic; the third reflects the uncertainty in the integrated luminosity. For the combined electron and muon analyses, we find σWB(W→lν)/σZB(Z→l +l-)=10.90±0.52. Assuming standard model couplings, we use this result to determine the width of the W boson, and obtain Γ(W)=2.044±0.097 GeV. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Evidence of anomalous WW and WZ production was sought in pp̄ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=1.8TeV. The final states WW(WZ)→μν jet jet+X, WZ→μνee+X and WZ→eνee'+X were studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 90 pb-1. No evidence of anomalous diboson production was found. Limits were set on anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings and were combined with our previous results. The combined 95% confidence level anomalous coupling limits for Λ =2 TeV are -0.25≤Δκ≤0.39 (λ=0) and -0.18≤λ≤0.19 (Δκ=0), assuming the WWγ couplings are equal to the WWZ couplings. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The result of a search for gaugino pair production with a trilepton signature is reinterpreted in the framework of minimal supergravity (MSUGRA) with R-parity violation via leptonic λ Yukawa couplings. The search used 95 pb-1 of pp̄ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV recorded by the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A large domain of the MSUGRA parameter space is excluded for λ121, λ122≥10-4. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present results of searches for technirho (rho(T)), techniomega (omega(T)), and Z' particles, using the decay channels rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-). The search is based on 124.8 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-1996. In the absence of a signal, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross sections for the processes pp-->rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-) as a function of the mass of the decaying particle. For certain model parameters, we exclude the existence of degenerate rho(T) and omega(T) states with masses below about 200 GeV. We exclude a Z' with mass below 670 GeV, assuming that it has the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson.

Abstract

Limits on anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings are presented from a study of WW/WZ→e vjj events produced in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV. Results from the analysis of data collected using the DØ detector during the 1993-1995 Tevatron collider run at Fermilab are combined with those of an earlier study from the 1992-1993 run. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on anomalous WWγ and WWZ couplings. With the assumption that the WWγ and WWZ couplings are equal, we obtain -0.34

Abstract

We report on measurements on inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in pp̄ collisions at s=1.8 TeV. From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 pb-1 recorded in 1994-1995 using the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine σ(pp̄→W+X)×B(W→eν) = 2310±10(stat)±50(syst)±100(lum)pb and σ(pp̄→Z+X)×B(Z→ee)=221±3(stat)±4(syst) ±10(lum) pb. From these, we derive σ(pp̄→W+X)×B(W→eν)/σ(pp̄→Z+X) ×B(Z→ee)=10.43±0.15(stat) ±0.20(syst)±0.10(NLO), B(W→eν)=0.1044±0.0015(stat)±0.0020(syst)±0. 0017(theory)±0.0010(NLO), and Γ W=2.169±0.031(stat)±0.042(syst)±0.041(theory) ±0.022(NLO)GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into nonstandard model final states, ΓWinv, of 0.213 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992-1993 data gives σ(pp̄→W+X) ×B(W→eν)/σ(pp̄→Z+X)×B(Z→ee)=10. 51±0.25,ΓW=2.152±0.066 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit on ΓWinv of 0.191 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 nb-1 taken at s=630 GeV, we measure σ(pp̄→W+X)×B(W→eν)=658±67 pb. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a quasi-model-independent search for the physics responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. We define final states to be studied, and construct a rule that identifies a set of relevant variables for any particular final state. A new algorithm ("SLEUTH") searches for regions of excess in those variables and quantifies the significance of any detected excess. After demonstrating the sensitivity of the method, we apply it to the semi-inclusive channel eμX collected in 108 pb-1 of pp̄ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV at the DØ experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find no evidence of new high pT physics in this sample. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Using the D0 detector at the 1.8 TeV p̄p Fermilab Tevatron collider, we have measured the inclusive dijet mass spectrum in the central pseudorapidity region |ηjet| < 1.0 for dijet masses greater than 200 GeV/c2. We have also measured the ratio of spectra σ(|ηjet| < 0.5)/σ(0.5 < |ηjet| < 1.0). The order αs3 quantum chromodynamics predictions are in good agreement with the data and we rule out models of quark compositeness with a contact interaction scale

Abstract

We present a measurement of the differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum of the Z boson in pp̄ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV using data collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994-1996. We find good agreement between our data and the next-to-next-to-next-leading-logarithmic resummation prediction and extract values of the non-perturbative parameters for the resummed prediction from a fit to the differential cross section. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The article discussed about the large extra dimensions in the monojet channel. The confidence-level lower limits, imposed on the fundamental Planck scale between 0.6 and 1.0 TeV, was 95%. The lower limits were found to be depended on the number of extra dimensions. The resultant limits were complimentary to those obtained in the single photon channel.
