A sustainable approach to the small-scale treatment of portable toilet and septic tank waste is in need to minimise the associated public health and environmental risks. Treatment of human wastes is highly regulated by legislation in many countries given the high content of organic components and pathogens. In conventional wastewater treatment plants, sewage undergoes a series of treatment stages (primary, secondary and tertiary) before effluent discharge. Delivering this approach on a small scale, to meet demands of temporary events, public gatherings or remote locations provides benefits in reducing transport and bulk handling. For a small-scale treatment process to effectively work, the process steps need to be simplified and minimised. The potential of a new treatment scheme is reviewed where the first step is the solid–liquid fraction separation, followed by anaerobic digestion (AD) of the solid fraction, including energy recovery in a combined heat and power unit. The liquid fraction undergoes a series of filtration and disinfection steps to comply with effluent regulations. Digestate from AD is burned on site to provide local domestic/office heating. This has a great potential for application in different locations where inputs may be sporadic, such as outdoor festivals, disaster response scenarios and construction sites.

The increasing quantities of polluted waters are calling for advanced purification methods. Flocculation is an essential component of the water purification process, yet flocculation is commonly not optimal due to our poor understanding of the flocculation process. In particular, there is little knowledge on the mechanisms ruling the migration of pollutants during treatment. Here we have created the first tensor diagram, a mathematical framework for the flocculation process, analyzed its properties with a deep learning model, and developed a classification scheme for its relationship with pollutants. The tensor was constructed by combining pixel matrices from a variety of floc images, each with a particular flocculation period. Changing the factors used to make flocs images, such as coagulant dose and pH, resulted in tensors, which were used to generate matrices, that is the tensor diagram. Our deep learning algorithm employed a tensor diagram to identify pollution levels. Results show tensor map attributes with over 98% of sample images correctly classified. This approach offers potential to reduce the time delay of feedback from the flocculation process with deep learning categorization based on its clustering capabilities. The advantage of the tensor data from the flocculation process improves the efficiency and speed of response for commercial water treatment.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health, social, and economic challenges and threatened progress towards achieving the UN sustainable development goals. We discuss lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic for global policymaking for health security governance, with a particular focus on antimicrobial resistance. We identify One Health as the primary foundation of public health risk management owing to the collaborative, multidisciplinary, and multisectoral efforts that underpin the One Health approach and that enhance understanding of the complex interactions at the human-animal-environment interface. We discuss the narrow human-centric focus of the One Health approach, highlight the underrepresentation of the environmental sector in One Health networks, and encourage greater representation from the environmental sector. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of the social sciences for health security research and the need for effective communication and trust. Finally, we underscore the importance of strengthened and collaborative health, social care, and disaster management systems. The application of these lessons will facilitate holistic, multisectoral, collaborative, and ethical actions on antimicrobial resistance.

Black-odorous waters are an increasingly common phenomenon characterized by excessive levels of nutrients, the formation of metal sufide precipitates, volatile sulfurous compounds, low dissolved oxygen and high chemical oxygen demand. Black-odorous waters frequently occur in lake and river systems where inputs have restricted circulation. The key remediation issue is the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Here, we present a novel aeration-adsorption system using fiber balls and we study treatment parameters and removal mechanism. Kinetics and changes of the solid phase were followed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Results show complete removal of ammonia N, initially at 31 mg/L, and 92.8% removal of total nitrogen, initially at 29 mg/L, after a 24 h reaction time at pH 9.67. At pH 5.67 and 9.67, total phosphorus and phosphate could be significantly reduced by 90–92% at 3.2–5.2 mg/L after 24 h. Treatment met China’s integrated wastewater discharge standards, demonstrating an effective and robust treatment capability. First-order and second-order kinetic models provided a good fit to the treatment data, indicating physical and chemical adsorption were involved in the treatment reactions. The reaction mechanism involved hydrogen substitution and binding to oxygen. These results present a cost effective and robust approach for the removal of N and P from black, odorous water, providing opportunity to abate environmental contamination.

Conventional methods for water and wastewater treatment are energy-intensive, notably at the stage of coagulation–flocculation, calling for new strategies to predict pollutant reduction because the amount of energy consumed is related to how much of the pollutant is treated. Here we developed a model, named Bio-logic, inspired by ecosystems, where pollutants represent organisms, coagulants are food, and the wider environmental conditions are the living environment. Artificial intelligence was used to learn the biological behavior, which enabled an accurate prediction of the amount of pollutant reduction. Results show that pseudo-biological objects that have a strong affinity for biological food, such as turbidity, total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen and the potassium permanganate index, induced a strong correlation, between measured pollutant consumption capacity and predicted values. For instance, R2 correlation coefficients are 0.97 for turbidity and 0.92 for the potassium permanganate index in the laboratory; and 0.99 for turbidity, 0.90 for total phosphorus, 0.75 for ammonia nitrogen and 0.63 for the potassium permanganate index in water treatment plants. Overall, our findings demonstrate that artificial intelligence can use the water Bio-logic model to predict the pollutant consumption capacity.

There is evidence that hypertensive heart disease is attributed to environmental noise and air pollution in European regions. Epidemiological studies have also demonstrated the potential role of road traffic air–noise pollution in adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. Despite the local implementation of the EU Directive on environmental noise and air quality, it is necessary to explore the progress and understand the impact of policy, legislation and the collection of exposure and associated health data for air and noise pollution in order to improve environmental public health. Therefore, the DPSEEA (Driving force, Pressure, State, Exposure, Effect and Action) conceptual framework model was used to systematically map and review these links and to identify relevant indicators linking air–noise pollution with cardiovascular diseases. With a focus on the EU and specifically UK situation, we critically evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based policy implementation of action plans, summarizing existing data using modified framework model tools. We concluded that, the DPSEEA conceptual framework provides an effective review method to more effectively, conduct data surveillance monitoring and assessment, and tracking outcomes with different types of evidence in the field of environmental public health. There is great scope demonstrating the use of the DPSEEA conceptual framework to highlight the casual relationship between exposure and effects taking into account other factors such as driving force, pressure, state, exposure and action and to incorporate as surveillance information in the environmental health tracking system (EHTS).

The Miocene Zhujiang Formation is the key horizon for oil and gas exploration in the Pearl River Mouth basin of northern South China Sea. With the help of core observation, seismic attributes and various analytical data, the sedimentary facies marks, distribution of sedimentary facies and depositional model of forced regression in the Miocene Zhujiang Formation of the Pearl River Mouth basin, northern South China Sea, have been studied. Forced regressive deposits were formed during the period when relative sea level ranged from highstand to lowstand and the sediments were forced to undergo progradation so that five sets of foreset delta deposits are developed in turn. In the early stage of forced regression, the normal delta where the delta plain, delta front and prodelta are not absent mainly developed. In the later stage of forced regression, the shelf edge delta with only the delta front and the prodelta, the longshore bar along the shelf break and the turbidite fan in the deep water of the slope area were developed. The favorable reservoir of forced regressive deposits are located near the upper boundary of the falling stage systems tract and the basal surface of forced regression, and they are the sand bodies of shelf edge delta, longshore bar and turbidite fan. The research results may provide guidance for reservoir prediction.

A set of 96 crystal structures containing sulfathiazole (SLFZ) is presented, comprising 52 new crystal structures and 39 structures retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database. The set comprises five polymorphs, 59 co-crystals, 29 salts and three other structures, providing one of the most extensive solid-form landscapes established for a single active pharmaceutical ingredient. The crystal structures are energy-minimised using DFT-D calculations to yield a standardised set. Geometrical comparisons are made using the programs CrystalCMP, COMPACK and XPac, and the results are combined and compared. Consistent conclusions are drawn on full 3-D isostructurality within the set, identifying a group of 18 isostructural co-crystals, and 11 further isostructural groups of salts or co-crystals comprising two or three structures. Aside from the fully isostructural groups, common 2-D supramolecular constructs (SCs) are restricted to groups of only two or three structures and there are no 2-D SCs that are observed especially frequently. Transferable 1-D SCs are more common, and examples are identified based on hydrogen-bonded and non-hydrogen bonded interactions between SLFZ molecules. Closely-related 1-D SCs comprising translated SLFZ molecules linked by hydrogen bonds are found in one polymorph and almost half of the multi-component set. A comparison of the five SLFZ polymorphs and the 91 multi-component crystal structures identifies several pairwise interactions between SLFZ molecules that are present in one of the polymorphs and at least one multi-component structure. A centrosymmetric R22(8) N-H⋯N hydrogen-bonded pair occurs in one polymorph and approximately 80% of the co-crystals. Intermolecular interaction energies, calculated using the PIXEL method, show that this R22(8) dimer is by far the most stabilising pairwise interaction in any structure. In general, however, there is no straightforward correlation between intermolecular interaction energies of the pairwise motifs in the polymorphs and their frequency of occurrence in the multi-component set. The extensive SLFZ set provides a challenge for systematic geometrical comparison of crystal structures, and some observations are made on the methodology and consistency of the applied programs. In this study, we have combined structural comparisons and the rugosity model to investigate experimental and predicted crystal structures from previous results of a crystal structure prediction study on a group of three rigid, planar small molecules, 2-methyl-, 3-methyl-, and 2,3-dimethyl-benzo[b]thiophene 1,1-dioxide. The results of the crystal structure comparisons provided some insights into the possibility that pairs of predictions, close in energy, might be related by potential phase transitions. In particular, we observed that for some pairs of predictions, a transformation from one type of crystal packing to the other would require only small shifts between adjacent molecules. This raised the question of whether only a few of these predictions can effectively be experimentally isolated. The calculations of the structural rugosity, a parameter that correlates surface rugosity with ease of crystallization, indicated smooth surfaces only for a few predictions. With the aim to isolate new polymorphs, we performed a small experimental study, limited to a few common solvents and crystallizations from the melt. Crystallizations from the melt selectively produced single crystals of new polymorphs for the 3-methyl- and the 2,3-methyl-benzothiophene derivatives. These showed good correlations with the above calculations, suggesting that the combination of crystal structure analysis and experimental screening might represent a useful approach in polymorphism screenings.

The 2017 ban on the waste import and new policies for the waste management sector in mainland China had wide-spread impact. After decades of poor environmental and public health impacts from the sector, a study is needed which focuses on policies updates and waste management. This provides a direction for the survival of local waste management industries and consider similarities with the ban promulgated in China on the restriction of waste import from other countries. We review the waste management situation in China before national legislation prevented the import of waste, highlight the status of landfill mining in China, and review the dynamics of domestic policies before and after the promulgation of the ban in China. The impact of the COVID19 pandemic on the waste management system is starting to emerge, providing both challenges and opportunities for the sector in China. We see the impact of the ban on the range of imported waste and domestically generated materials. The ban results in price increases for domestic recycling that forces companies to introduce more formal recycling processes and to drive the consumption behaviours to more reasonable and environmentally friendly options. The driver in China is to reduce pollution in the environment and improve health, but a negative impact has been from increased landfill mining which has impeded the original aim of the waste ban and requires further technological development. The dynamic of domestic policies in China shows higher level of activity of updates and revisions or introduction of new policies from 2015 onwards and the concept of ‘zero waste cities’ brings new hope for improvement of the Chinese waste management system. The pandemic also suggests an important step to establish sustainable management systems despite evidence of increased “fly-tipping”. The rebound of the waste ban may have stimulated in the short term negative impacts on local environments both in China and internationally.

Although most of us have a rough-and-ready grasp of virtue and vice concepts, this article argues that the fully virtuous and practical wise agent also has a perfected and fine-grained grasp of these concepts, and other ethically relevant thick concepts like ‘the important’, ‘the fine’, and ‘the necessary’. This makes an important contribution to the debate between generalists and particularists about ethics, insofar as virtue terms often have general content but the ability to apply that general content requires the agent to have a refined ethical understanding which comes from experience and the individual’s own development of virtue.

We should distinguish actions which are virtuous though not done from virtue, from virtuous actions done from virtue, which express not just ideal virtue but ideal practical rationality. How can we relate this to ordinary virtuous action? The virtuous have the right aims as well as pursuing them intelligently, in a way analogous to sound as opposed to merely valid theoretical reasoning; we should recognize this, but be careful not to over-intellectualize what the virtuous understand. Although virtuous actions result from choice and involve acting for a reason, this is consistent with spontaneous action insofar as spontaneous virtuous action is appropriately goal-directed and understood by the agent as such.

Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean, understood traditionally, can no more be applied fruitfully in his ethics than in his scientific work. The traditional quantitative interpretation (defended by Urmson and Curzer) produces bizarre results; a preferable interpretation of achieving ‘right action, right people, right circumstances’ and so on is illuminating, but emerges as the idea of hitting the centre of a target rather than anything to do with traditional understandings of the mean. As applied to the emotions, the idea of the mean in the medical sense of achieving balance between extremes illuminates ethical education in the virtues.

The virtues are an adequate starting point for morality only with the full Aristotelian conception of virtue as a complex and deep character trait (often misunderstood by critics), involving practical wisdom (phronēsis), and distinguishing virtue from strength of will. Right action is what the virtuous person does: this is not a definition, as it has sometimes been taken. Rather, it directs us to the central role of right action done characteristically from virtue and without qualification. It is thus important to emphasize how this kind of characteristically virtuous action is distinguished from right action done from a right decision, but in circumstances of tragic choice, and not virtuous.

What special knowledge does the practically wise agent have? How does the practically wise agent differ both from the person who merely has good natural dispositions of character and from the practically clever but unvirtuous agent? This article argues that the Aristotelian phronimos’s knowledge is partly characterized by good deliberation (knowing what are effective means to one’s ends), good comprehension (an accurate understanding of one’s situation and circumstances, especially in assessing the testimony of others), and correct discernment (correct understanding of how virtue and vice terms apply in particular circumstances). This explains why virtuous agents are not merely well motivated, but are effective and savvy agents in the real world, equipped with valuable life experience.

This essay treats the development of Foot’s efforts to produce a naturalistic theory of moral judgement from her early “Moral Beliefs” (1958) to her 2001 book Natural Goodness. Although she consistently attempts to isolate and defend a notion of goodness that is grounded in goodness in living things, she is not attempting to get ethics out of biology, especially not evolutionary biology: “species/life-form” in her and Thompson is the everyday concept not the specialised evolutionary theory one. She is just making a claim about the conceptual structure, or grammar, of our moral evaluations of ourselves being the same as the structure of our evaluations of other living things. How then does she cope with the is-ought gap? She rethinks our practical reason just as a faculty like our sight and hearing, which can be, or fail to be, in good working order in a good, or defective, human being. Viewed this way, discriminating recognition of pleasure/the satisfaction of desire as a reason and recognition of self-interest as a reason, and following each when appropriate, are both involved in the faculty’s being in good working order. And so is the discriminating recognition and following of the reasons that pertain to the virtues. She is claiming and not denying that we are a very special sort of living thing. We are human rational agents and when we evaluate ourselves as such, which we do in moral judgements, everything undergoes a “sea change.” So she is espousing the sort of naturalism that McDowell describes as “the radical and satisfying alternative to subjectivism and supernaturalism,” not his other “natural-scientific” sort.

Applying a virtue ethical approach to our treatment of the other animals first requires appreciating why we should dismiss an approach in terms of their moral status. Virtue ethics approaches to vegetarianism and medical experiments on them are not ‘human-centred’. The virtues in question do not privilege the human point of view, as the prescriptions of compassion and the virtuous avoidance of cruelty straightforwardly apply to the non-human animals as well (and virtue ethicists can draw easily from utilitarian arguments in this respect). However, virtue ethical approaches have to recognize that the actions they guide us to do may be individually too small, relative to acceptance of the practices, to merit much, if any, praise.

How should we apply virtue ethics to issues about the environment and natural world? This article explores two strategies: first, we might apply old virtues and vices to these issues, identifying various fails in terms of greed, self-indulge, short-sightedness, etc. But we might also recognize that our current problems highlight a new domain of value and action, and thus require us to formulate new virtues and teach those to the next generation. This article also helpfully summarizes the conditions that need to be met for something to count as a virtue, and provides vivid illustrations of how virtue may be taught.

The family has historically not been a central topic of attention of liberal political philosophers, but whether a society promotes good or dysfunctional families should be a major concern of political philosophers. Though ‘family’ is often construed in a narrow way to mean a certain kind of nuclear family, there are many examples of more expansive models of families that perform the function of raising, nurturing, and socializing children well. Focusing on more modest goals concerning how to make families better would in many cases be more useful and more beneficial than grand theorizing about the justice of a society.

This article addresses a number of common objections to Aristotelian ethical naturalism. The objections include the claims that there is no human essence; that there is no concept of health; that ethical naturalism derives ethics from evolutionary biology and commits the naturalistic fallacy; that our messy nature may prevent us from living both happily and ethically well; and lastly, that human variation precludes the possibility of acquiring virtue for many people. Many of these objections can be addressed by better understanding the Wittgensteinian roots of Aristotelian naturalism and why that project is independent from evolutionary biology.

This volume brings together a selection of Rosalind Hursthouse’s essays on Aristotle, virtue ethics, and social philosophy. These articles—many of which are published in more obscure venues—provide valuable context and clarification for much of her more famous work on virtue ethics while drawing attention to new avenues of philosophical investigation Hursthouse pursued. Important contributions include articles on the development of virtue in children, what the Aristotelian practically wise person knows, how virtue ethicists can inform discussions about environmental and animal ethics, what the starting point for virtue politics should be in a contemporary political context, and how human nature and ethical naturalism could provide the foundation for a virtue ethical system.

A familiar type of action should remind us of the implausibility of the philosophical demand that an intentional action must require that the agent do it for a reason or that the action is irrational. The article defends the existence of actions which are intentional, although the agent neither did the action for a reason nor would not have done it had she not been under the influence of an emotion. Although some of these arational actions could be evaluated negatively insofar as they are contrary to reason, not all actions prompted by emotion and without rational basis are bad—some in fact elicit fondness in us and reveal an important aspect of human agency that is not grounded in the value of reason.

There is scholarly debate over the issue of whether there is goodwill in the friendships Aristotle calls friendships of utility and pleasure as well as in friendships based on virtue. This article argues that there is goodwill in utility and pleasure friendships on the basis of scholarly considerations, but provides further motivation for the view by considering the worldly wisdom in recognizing goodwill in pleasure friendships based on erotic passion. In these relationships, goodwill based on pleasure is often mistaken for the deeper relationship of loving someone ‘for him/her self’, which is only to be found in virtue-friendships. Thus we should be careful not to infer from someone having goodwill towards us—even goodwill for our own sake—that they love us for our character and who we are as people.

The Stoic account of our soul as undividedly rational thinks of emotions as involving mistaken judgements about value, but famously has a problem as to how emotions become excessive and beyond rational control. Their account suggests a better explanation than they themselves provide: being carried away by anger and stubbornly refusing to listen to good reasons indicate a lapse into a childish, less rationally developed state. The Stoics’ own unrealistic view of childhood development stands in the way of their appreciating this. This account not only improves the Stoic position, but also suggests a promising line of thought about emotions independently of it.

Aristotelian naturalism rests neither on merely descriptive empirical facts nor on a comprehensive ethical worldview, but on a set of descriptions about human life that fall somewhere in the middle: they are ethical but non-evaluative beliefs about human nature and how life goes. Within this framework, we can ground the familiar list of virtue and vices, and locate substantive philosophical disagreements in the right place, namely about what kind of living thing human beings are and what they need to flourish. Although it is unlikely to be convincing to an immoralist (let alone provide motivating reasons for such a person), such an approach fills out the picture of how the lessons we have learned about virtue and vice can be integrated into a more comprehensive and philosophically satisfying account of human nature.

Existing discussions of moral dilemmas tend to presuppose accepting the questioner’s construal of the situation as having only two possible options for the agent, and that once the ‘morally right’ decision has been determined, that the agent has done something morally good. Both of these assumptions are corrupting, and virtue ethicists can give a more sophisticated account of ‘right action’ in moral dilemmas by showing how virtuous agents will try to find other courses of action than those proposed by others, will try to better the situation afterwards (only saying that the action is ‘right’ if conjoined with some other action), and will only call characteristically vicious actions ‘right’ with qualification. This article also features a number of instructive anecdotes from Elizabeth Anscombe on this topic.

Hume’s account of justice is in fact an attack on the concept of rights familiar from the French and American revolutions, one which is prior to the question whether laws are just. Hume focuses on property as a matter of what is mine and yours in a sense establishable only by reference to laws. This does not make Hume a positivist; it is just laws which establish rights, not the other way round, and the justice of laws is established by their usefulness, or otherwise, to societies. But insofar as various legal arrangements might equally well secure important human and social ends, we can see how the rights a society has (or needs) depend on the particular contexts and political structures in which they are invoked and the ends that they serve.

Contrary to mainstream liberal understandings of rights as abstractly specified and necessary conditions of justice, we should start by specifying what it would mean for human beings to flourish together and achieve eudaimonia. The rights of such a society could in turn be derived from what is required for that society to live well together and the rules that are conducive to a good society. This would avoid the possibility that a society could be just but bad or wicked, and shows how rights could differ between societies without sliding into relativism about rights. Such an account of rights would develop important insights from Hume and Anscombe, while being remaining Aristotelian in spirit.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment has become a thing of great challenge in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and globally. Informal recyclers appear to be the key actors in this recycling sector in the location, but they lack the right skills and knowledge. This study sheds light on the consequences of informal recycling in the mobile telephone network phone village at Rumukurushi (a location believed to accommodate about 30 informal recyclers) in Port Harcourt. The level of education, health, and safety awareness of the informal recyclers, their willingness to obey government guidelines, and their knowledge of waste electrical and electronic equipment management were investigated. Data collection was achieved with the help of questionnaires and the analysis was done graphically. The outcome of the questionnaires administered to twenty-five (25) participants shows that the informal recyclers are more conversant with their primitive style of practice. They lack knowledge and awareness on waste electrical and electronic equipment management best practices. Other findings include the informal recyclers' lack of awareness on the use of personal protective equipment and the application of health and safety in the discharge of their duties. They are willing to obey government guidelines on waste electrical and electronic equipment management. Informal recyclers are willing to quit other waste electrical and electronic equipment management processes if they can be paid by the government for gathering them. The study recommends that the activities of the informal recyclers should be restricted to gathering only.

Xikuangshan antimony mine in Lengshuijiang, China, has been developed for many years, and stormwater runoff contains high levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). The aims were to find the sources of PTEs by statistical analysis and local spatial distribution of industrial activity and simulate transport process of PTEs in the soil to evaluate pollution extent and health risk. The PTEs in this study were antimony, cadmium, zinc, nickel, lead, and copper. The result showed antimony and a minor portion of zinc were derived from the antimony processing activities, copper derived from agricultural activities, and most of the zinc came from the zinc industry. Nickel, lead, and cadmium came from a mixed source of atmospheric transportation, vehicle transport, and other local industrial activities. Besides, antimony was the most hazardous element in this mining area. In the fourth year, the groundwater in the whole area was uncontaminated by antimony, and there was no non-carcinogenic health risk. Except for the southern area of Lianxi River and the area enclosed by South mine, Zhumushan village, and Tailing Dam, there was a non-carcinogenic risk at year 5.4. These sources of PTEs found in the stormwater runoff are useful for locals to control of PTEs pollution. And the health risk assessment method helps evaluate the risk of PTEs caused by stormwater runoff.

In this study, we analyzed 53 topsoil samples from the Xikuangshan South Mine in Hunan Province to investigate the distribution characteristics of pH and the concentrations of selected metals to determine the controlling factors and identify their sources. Kriging interpolation, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, the index of the geoaccumulation index, and Hakanson's potential ecological risk were applied. The results show that the mean values of Pb, As, Cd, and Sb in the study area were larger than the background value of mountain soil in Hunan Province, and only the average Cr concentration was slightly lower than the background value. The spatial distributions of pH and five metals in the soil were very different, indicating that pH had no significant effect on the distribution of the metals. The wind, rivers, and land-use patterns in different regions of the study area may be the main reasons for their distribution patterns. The correlation component and principal component analysis revealed that Pb showed positive correlations with Cr and Cd, respectively, and Sb-As and Cr-Cd showed strong paired correlations. The cumulative proportion of the first two components accounted for 70.516% of the total variance, which suggests that mining activities are a major source of As and Sb, whereas Pb, Cr, and Cd were derived from natural and anthropogenic sources. The geoaccumulation index revealed that the major pollutants in the soils were mainly Cd, followed by Sb and As. The soils in the study area were moderately contaminated with Pb and lightly polluted by Cr. The ecological hazards of each metal in descending order were Cd Sb As Pb Cr. The index of the comprehensive potential ecological risk for metals indicated that the Xikuangshan South Mine is at or above a moderate ecological risk level, with an extremely strong potential for ecological risks posed by Cd and Sb. Almost all home aquaria contain substrate, either as intentional enrichment or for aesthetic purposes. For fishes, benefits of structural enrichment have been well considered, particularly in research and aquaculture settings. However, our understanding of the impacts of tank substrate as enrichment is limited. While substrate can induce foraging in some species, a major drawback is the potential of substrate to harbour elevated levels of waste and pathogenic bacteria. Here, we considered whether substrate as a form of environmental enrichment significantly altered water quality and bacterial presence in home aquaria. Water quality (temperature, oxygen, pH, TAN, unionised ammonia, nitrate, Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+ and K+) and bacterial presence (Pseudomonas spp.) were measured over two seven-week periods in stand-alone, tropical, freshwater tanks that simulated home aquaria. The following four enrichment conditions were considered: bare tanks, plastic plants, gravel substrate or sand substrate. The addition of both gravel and sand resulted in increased pH, concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen and nitrate. Substrate was also associated with a greater Pseudomonas presence. Decreased pH alongside an increased concentration of ions were also observed depending on the time of year. In conclusion, enrichment type affected the water quality of home aquaria, with further research needed on the role of the tank biome in fish welfare.

The concentration of hydrolyzed coagulant ion species is a key factor in determining drinking water treatment efficiency. Direct correlation of water treatment efficiency with changes in species during coagulation has not been addressed. We investigated the correlation under different hydraulic conditions and water treatment efficiencies including changes in removal of turbidity, ultraviolet adsorption at 254 nm (UV254) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Results highlighted that Al species (monomeric species as Ala, medium polymeric species as Alb and colloidal species as Alc) behaved differently during coagulation and treatment efficiencies were affected. When varying the mixing speed, the removal of Alc species had a strong negative correlation with water treatment efficiency but under other hydraulic conditions positive correlations were found. The removal of Ala species was positively correlated with water treatment efficiency, but under other hydraulic conditions the low abundance of Ala species meant the correlation was difficult to observe. The Alb species were significantly and positively correlated with water treatment efficiency with the highest correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.87. The correlation of metallic species with removal efficiencies of the DOC and the UV254 produced higher R2 values. Correlation of the rate of removal of Alb species with the removal efficiencies of the DOC or the UV254 was better than for Alc. HIGHLIGHTS Hydrolyzed coagulant ion species is considered as one of key factors in determining drinking water treatment efficiency.; Drinking water treatment efficiency is often correlated with the distribution species in coagulant rather than water.; The variation of the species removal was investigated in the coagulation system.; Under varied hydraulic conditions a positive response in correlation was presented.

The crystal structure of the cis isomer of cis-bis(L-DOPA-κ2 N,O)copper(II) monohydrate (L-DOPA is 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine) (CuLD), [Cu(C9H10NO4)2]·H2O, is a singular example of a structurally characterized, homoleptic, crystalline metal L-DOPA complex. CuLD crystallizes in the space group P21, with Z′ = 2. The two independent molecules are square planar, and are interconnected by a linear hydrogen-bonded chain containing 12 independent hydrogen bonds. The copper ions in both molecules have weak apical intermolecular Cu...O interactions [2.739 (2) and 2.973 (2) Å] with catechol –OH groups. A survey of the Cambridge Structural Database suggested that cis and trans isomers of Cu(NH2–C–CO2)2 amino acid complexes are equally likely to occur. 12 strong O—H...O and N—H...O hydrogen bonds stabilize an unusual linear arrangement of the Cu complexes. The Cu...Cu′ distances along the chain are nearly equal [5.0739 (3) and 5.1107 (3) Å] and the Cu...Cu′...Cu angles are nearly linear [176.75 (1)°]. The MATCH procedure available in the Oxford University Crystals for Windows package was used to carry out a detailed analysis of the relationship between the two independent molecules. MATCH has some particular advantages in studying the details of pseudosymmetry, which include: (i) no atomic-order requirements; (ii) the pseudosymmetry matrix is readily available, which allows quick insight into the symmetry elements involved and their location; and (iii) the differences between molecular centroids, as well as between all atomic positions and torsion angles, are listed. A tutorial presentation is designed to attract new users to the technique. In the present case, a search for a pseudosymmetric relationship between the two independent molecules showed that they are related by a pseudo-42 axis along the crystallographic c direction. A detailed analysis shows that the pseudo-42 symmetry is disrupted by torsions about the CH2—C(ipso) bonds, and that there is no supergroup that can be used to describe the crystal structure.

An investigation of environmental geochemistry of shale rock, soil and water in parts of Abakaliki, southern Benue Trough , Nigeria was carried out in order to evaluate the impact of shale bedrock in the soil and water environment. Shale rock, soil and water samples were collected from ten (10) locations within the study area and were analysed for major and trace elements using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In situ parameters such as pH, in water were measured in the field. The results show that Pb is highly enriched while As. Cr, Co, Fe, Ni, Sr, V and Zn are slightly enriched in the shales relative to the global shale average. Similar geochemical trend was observed for surface and subsurface soils. Also, the mean concentrations of As, Co. Cu. Mn, Pb and Zn in soils at both depths are higher than the mean concentrations in the shale bedrock in the area of study, implying relative enrichments of these metals in the soils of the study area. In addition, the mean values of Al, Fe, Ti, Cr, Ni, Sr and V in both soil depths are lower than the values recorded in the shale bedrock. Relationship between pH and metal load suggested that the waters are dominantly near neutral to alkaline range suggesting that acidic contaminants do not affect the water quality. The mean concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn and Pb in groundwater and surface water were above the regulatory standards indicating contamination of the water. The calculated enrichment factor, anthropogenic input, pollution index for soil indicated that the soil are highly contaminated through numerous geogenic and anthropogenic sources with Pb being the most toxic metal with the shale bedrock and the mineral load contained in them as the major contributor of these contaminants.

International audience; The use of the term "heavy metal" is regularly questioned by the scientific community. Here, we followed the evolution (1970-2020) in the number of published papers including this term in their title. Thus, we can evidence a continuous, albeit sometimes stabilizing, increase especially in environmental journals. After several other warning opinions, we propose that it should be replaced in the scientific literature by terms like "metal", "metalloid", "trace metal elements" or "potentially toxic element".

In this discussion, we highlight that the terms sorption and adsorption are often confused and misused in many articles. Even if one thought their formal definition is well known, this does not appear to be the case.We recommend encouragement to adopt the word adsorption only when fully supported by appropriate data and using the sorption terminology when it is morespeculative, typically in complex solid/fluid natural systems.

The development and utilization of magnetic nanoadsorption materials with large adsorption capacity and easy separation are the research hotspot nowadays. In this study, nanosheet-assembled maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) magnetic microspheres were successfully synthesized by an environmental friendly, quick, and simple method, for enhanced Sb(III) removal from aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were used to characterize the material. The results showed that the product contained flower-like γ-Fe2O3 microspheres composed of petal-shaped nanosheets interspersed with each other. The specific surface area and pore volume were 69.23 m2/g and 0.15 cm3/g, respectively. The material has a strong magnetic response, which allows rapid solid-liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. The effects of different dosages, solution pH, and contact time on the adsorption effect were studied by batch adsorption experiments, and the reusability of the materials was evaluated. Both Freundlich isothermal adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were able to describe the uptake of Sb(III). The maximum adsorption capacity of the material was 47.48 mg/g under optimal conditions. The adsorption mechanism is mainly that Sb and lattice oxygen (OX2-) form Fe-O-Sb coordination bonds, which is incorporated into the crystal structure of γ-Fe2O3 as inner-sphere surface complexes. The synthetic material has the advantage of simple preparation process, good adsorption capacity, operation over a wide range of pH, and easy physical separation from treatment systems with good potential for future application to treat polluted wastewater.

To evaluate the potential of sepiolite-based materials to resolve environmental pollution problems, a study is needed which looks at the whole life cycle of material application, including the residual value of material classified as waste from the exploitation of sepiolite deposits in the region or from its processing and purification. This would also maximize value from the exploitation process and provide new potential for local waste management. We review the geographical distribution of sepiolite, its application in the treatment of potentially toxic elements in soil and across the wider landscape, an assessment of modification and compositional variation of sepiolite-based applications within site remediation and wastewater treatment. The potential of sepiolite-based technologies is widespread and a number of processes utilize sepiolite-derived materials. Along with its intrinsic characteristics, both the long-term durability and the cost-effectiveness of the application need to be considered, making it possible to design ready-to-use products with good market acceptance. From a critical analysis of the literature, the most frequently associated terms associated with sepiolite powder are the use of lime and bentonite, while fly ash ranked in the top ten of the most frequently used material with sepiolite. These add improved performance for the inclusion as a soil or wastewater treatment options, alone or applied in combination with other treatment methods. This approach needs an integrated assessment to establish economic viability and environmental performance. Applications are not commonly evaluated from a cost–benefit perspective, in particular in relation to case studies within geographical regions hosting primary sepiolite deposits and wastes that have the potential for beneficial reuse.

Chemical oxidation is a key technique used in dye wastewater treatment via the formation of hydroxyl radicals. To obtain optimal treatment effects, it is critical to understand the interaction of the molecular structure of the dye with the hydroxyl radical. We evaluated fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy to study the decay of an azo-dye (Procion Red MX-5B) by a hydroxyl radical generated from catalytic Fe (III) on H2O2. Results showed that fluorescence signal reliably indicated the variations of the chemical groups and components during degradation, and the degradation could be divided into three stages: initial degradation (decolorisation), rapid intermediate degradation, and final degradation. Under control of uncorrected matrix correlation, the fluorescence fractions could be fitted successfully by parallel factor model (PARAFAC) model: two fluorescence components in initial degradation including mono substituted benzene and mono substituted naphthalene, three components as multi substituted benzene in rapid degradation, and no components could be resolved in the final degradation. The results from the study demonstrate the utility fluorescence characterization of dye degradation mechanisms and enhance the understanding of the degradation mechanisms.

How to effectively remove excess Sb(III) in the water environment by biosorption is receiving close attention in the international scientific community. To obtain the maximum biosorption efficiency, response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize a total of 13 factors for biosorption of Sb(III) onto living Rhodotorula mucilaginosa DJHN070401. The mechanism of biosorption and bioaccumulation was also studied. The results showed that biosorption reached 56.83% under the optimum conditions. Besides, pH, Fe2+, and temperature are significant influencing factors, and control of Ca2+ and Fe2+ has a beneficial impact on Sb(III) biosorption. The characterization explained that physical adsorption occurred readily on the loose and porous surface of DJHN070401 where carboxyl, amidogen, phosphate group, and polysaccharide C-O functional groups facilitated absorption by complexation with Sb(III), accompanied by ion exchange of Na+, Ca2+ ions with Sb(III). It was also noted that the living cell not only improved the removal efficiency in the presence of metabolic inhibitors but also prevented intracellular Sb(III) being re-released into the environment. The results of this study underpin improved and efficient methodology for biosorption of Sb(III) from wastewater.

Removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a major problem in drinking water treatment, because DOM modifies color, taste and odor, and carcinogenic by-products of DOM can be created during disinfection. Efficient water remediation is limited by our poor knowledge of DOM structure and properties, thus calling for advanced methods of characterisation. Here, we tested the influence of two coagulants, polymeric ferric sulfate and cationic polyacrylamide, on the three-dimensional fluorescence excitation–emission wavelength spectra of DOM during coagulation. Results of the parallel factor model reveal 3 fluorophore components C1–3. Cationic polyacrylamide decreases the linear correlation between DOM and fluorescence, e.g., from 0.92 to 0.82 for C1 and from 0.84 to 0.79 for C2. The C3 component, a protein-like material, was the most affected. Findings demonstrate the need to consider residual polymer as a potential interference when using fluorescence to assess DOM removal by coagulation.

Accurately inverting changes in the reservoir elastic parameters that are caused by oil and gas exploitation is of great importance in accurately describing reservoir dynamics and enhancing recovery. Previously numerous time-lapse seismic inversion methods based on the approximate formulas of exact Zoeppritz equations or wave equations have been used to estimate these changes. However the low accuracy of calculations using approximate formulas and the significant calculation effort for the wave equations seriously limits the field application of these methods. However, these limitations can be overcome by using exact Zoeppritz equations. Therefore, we study the time-lapse seismic difference inversion method using the exact Zoeppritz equations. Firstly, the forward equation of time-lapse seismic difference data is derived based on the exact Zoeppritz equations. Secondly, the objective function based on Bayesian inversion theory is constructed using this equation, with the changes in elastic parameters assumed to obey a Gaussian distribution. In order to capture the sharp time-lapse changes of elastic parameters and further enhance the resolution of the inversion results, the blockiness constraint, which follows the differentiable Laplace distribution, is added to the prior Gaussian background model. All examples of its application show that the proposed method can obtain stable and reasonable P- and S-wave velocities and density changes from the difference data. The accuracy of estimation is higher than for existing methods, which verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of the new method. It can provide high-quality seismic inversion results for dynamic detailed reservoir description and well location during development.

This paper presents a method for combining the hybrid eikonal solver and the prior velocity information to obtain high-resolution crosswell imaging. The hybrid eikonal solver in this technique can ensure rapid and reliable forward modeling of traveltime field in an unsmoothed velocity model. We also utilize the sonic well logging curve to properly develop an initial reference velocity model, and use the sonic well logging data as the prior information for the inversion part, which can restrict the problem of non-uniqueness. The results of the numerical experiment of traveltime in multi-layer media showed that the hybrid eikonal solver was more accurate than the finite difference method. The case study of an oil field in eastern China demonstrated that our method can derive a high-resolution reconstruction of the subsurface structure by inverting the primary traveltime datasets. These results suggest that even though the eikonal equation is a high frequency approximation to the wavefield, the hybrid eikonal solver can provide an accurate traveltime field in the forward modelling step of seismic crosswell tomography, which is critical to ensure high-resolution invert imaging in a highly heterogeneous environment.
