We present results of three-dimensional joint inversion of seismic, magnetotelluric, and gravity data over a marine salt dome. Such structures are difficult to image with a single method, and our results demonstrate how combining different techniques can yield improved results. More importantly, we examine the reliability of velocity-conductivity relationships derived from structure-coupled joint inversion approaches. Comparison with a seismic reflection section shows that our models match the upper limit of the salt. Furthermore, velocity and resistivity logs from a borehole drilled into the salt dome's flank match, within error, those recovered by the inversion. The good match suggests that the difference in length scale does not have a significant effect in this case. This provides a strong incentive to incorporate borehole data into the joint inversion in the future and substantiates approaches that use the relationships derived from joint inversion models for lithological classification.

Recently seismic reflection methods have been successfully applied to oceanographic issues. Here, we present a new approach, combining XBT and CTD surveys with seismic observations, to visualize long sections with a resolution down to a few meters. The challenge to a full investigation of mixing processes has been the tremendous span of spatial scales ranging from hundreds of kilometers to centimeters. Traditional hydrographic observations could only resolve the large scale effects by measuring temperature and salinity profiles at discrete locations typically several kilometers apart, whereas dedicated localized measurements allowed investigation of the ocean fine structure at the other end of the spatial spectrum. The intermediate scales have in contrast been difficult to observe systematically. Here we present temperature and salinity data inverted from seismic observations that cover the intermediate scales and provide a new approach to image mesoscale processes and allow the investigation of their dynamics at unprecedented resolution.

Plate tectonics provides the linking framework for all tectonic and magmatic activity seen today, but it is not known when plate tectonics first developed on Earth. New deep seismic reflection and coincident refraction profiles across an exposed, 1.89-Gyr-old volcanic arc complex show a 10-km-thick offset in the Moho and bivergent reflectors in the crust, which were most probably created by plate convergence, subduction and accretion during the Early Proterozoic. Hence, plate tectonic models seem to be applicable for at least the second half of Earth's history.

The computationally efficient phase-screen forward modeling technique is extended to allow investigation of non-normal ray paths. The code is developed to accommodate all diffracted and converted phases up to critical angle, building on a geometrical construction method. The new approach relies upon pre-scanning the model space to assess the complexity of each screen. The propagating wavefields are then divided as a function of horizontal wavenumber, and each subset is transformed to the spatial domain separately, carrying with it angular information. This allows both accurate 3-D phase corrections and Zoeppritz reflection and transmission coefficients to be applied. The phase-screen code is further developed to handle simple anisotropic media. During phasescreen modeling, propagation is undertaken in the wavenumber domain where exact expressions for anisotropic phase velocities are available. Travel-times and amplitude effects from a range of anisotropic shales are computed and compared with previous literature.

Two wide-angle seismic lines located in the northern Rockall Trough were acquired in May 2000. One line (line E) crosses the trough from the continental shelf off Lewis to normal oceanic crust west of Lousy Bank in NW-SE direction. The other line (line D) intersects with line E, crosses the Wyville-Thomson Ridge in a SW-NE direction and ends in the Faeroe-Shetland Basin. Sonobuoy data and expanding spread profiles acquired in the same area have been remodeled. Analysis of the seismic data using travel times and amplitudes reveals an up to 5 km thick sedimentary basin including an up to 1.5 km thick basaltic layer which is present in most of the trough. Further conclusions of this study are that the Rockall Trough is underlain by highly stretched continental crust of ∼13 km thickness. The crust thickens to ∼24 km beneath Lousy Bank, which is interpreted to be of continental nature. Beneath the Hebrides continental shelf a three-layer continental crust of 26 km is modeled. An up to 12 km thick high-velocity layer is observed underneath the ocean-continent boundary and is interpreted as magmatic underplating resulting from excess volcanism during rifting. No evidence for an underplate layer could be distinguished beneath the trough area. Modeling of the structure of the Wyville-Thomson Ridge revealed no existing igneous core of the ridge confirming existing theories, that it is a compressional structure.

We present a three-dimensional upper crustal model of the 9°03′N overlapping spreading center (OSC) on the East Pacific Rise that assists in understanding the relationship between melt sills and upper crustal structure at a ridge discontinuity with enhanced melt supply at crustal levels. Our P wave velocity model obtained from tomographic inversion of ∼70,000 crustal first arrival travel times suggests that the geometry of extrusive emplacement are significantly different beneath the overlapping spreading limbs. Extrusive volcanic rocks above the western melt sill are inferred to be thin (∼250 m). More extensive accumulation of extrusives is inferred to the west than to the east of the western melt sill. The extrusive layer inferred above the eastern melt sill thickens from ∼350 (at the neovolcanic axis) to 550 m (to the west of the melt sill). Volcanic construction is likely to be significant in the formation of ridge crest morphology at the OSC, particularly at the tip of the eastern limb. On the basis of our interpretation of the velocity model, we propose that enhanced magma supply at crustal levels at the OSC may provide an effective mechanism for the migration of ridge discontinuities. This “dynamic magma supply model” may explain the commonly observed nonsteady migration pattern of ridge discontinuities by attributing this to the temporal fluctuations in melt availability to the overlapping spreading limbs.
