Quantum imaging with undetected photons (QIUP) has recently emerged as a new powerful imaging tool. Exploiting the spatial entanglement of photon pairs, it allows decoupling of the sensing and detection wavelengths, facilitating imaging in otherwise challenging spectral regions by leveraging mature silicon-based detection technology. All existing implementations of QIUP have so far utilised the momentum correlations within the biphoton states produced by spontaneous parametric downconversion. Here, for the first time, we implement and examine theoretically and numerically the complementary scenario - utilising the tight position correlations formed within photon pairs at birth. This image plane arrangement facilitates high resolution imaging with comparative experimental ease, and we experimentally show resolutions below 10 μm at a sensing wavelength of 3.7 μm. Moreover, we present a quantitative numerical model predicting the imaging capabilities of QIUP for a wide range of parameters. Finally, by imaging mouse heart tissue at the mid-IR to reveal morphological features on the cellular level, we further demonstrate the viability of this technique for the life sciences. These results offer new perspectives on the capabilities of QIUP for label-free widefield mid-IR microscopy, enabling real-world biomedical as well as industrial imaging applications.

Owing to its capacity for unique (bio)-chemical specificity, microscopy withmid-IR illumination holds tremendous promise for a wide range of biomedical and industrial applications. The primary limitation, however, remains detection; with current mid-IR detection technology often marrying inferior technical capabilities with prohibitive costs. This has lead to approaches that shift detection towavelengths into the visible regime, where vastly superior silicon-based cameratechnology is available. Here, we experimentally show how nonlinear interferometry with entangled light can provide a powerful tool for mid-IR microscopy, while only requiring near-infrared detection with a standard CMOS camera. In this proof-of-principle implementation, we demonstrate intensity imaging overa broad wavelength range covering 3.4-4.3um and demonstrate a spatial resolution of 35um for images containing 650 resolved elements. Moreover, we demonstrate our technique is fit for purpose, acquiring microscopic images of biological tissue samples in the mid-IR. Low-noise quantum frequency conversion in periodically-poled nonlinear crystals has proved challenging when the pump wavelength is shorter than the target wavelength. This is - at least in large part - a consequence of the parasitic spontaneous parametric down-conversion of pump photons, whose efficiency is increased by fabrication errors in the periodic poling. Here we characterise the poling quality of commercial periodically-poled bulk potassium titanyl phosphate (ppKTP) by measuring the sum-frequency generation (SFG) efficiency over a large phase mismatch range from 0 to more than 400$\pi$. Over the probed range the SFG efficiency behaves nearly ideally and drops to a normalised efficiency of $10^{-6}$. Our results demonstrate that any background pedestal which would be formed by random duty cycle errors in ppKTP is substantially reduced when compared to periodically poled lithium niobate. The standard deviation of the random duty cycle errors can be estimated to be smaller than 2% of the domain length. Mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy is a crucial workhorse for a plethora of analytical applications and is suitable for diverse materials, including gases, polymers or biological tissue. However, this technologically significant wavelength regime between 2.5-10$\mu$m suffers from technical limitations primarily related to the large noise in mid-IR detectors and the complexity and cost of bright, broadband mid-IR light sources. Here, using highly non-degenerate, broadband photon pairs from bright spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a nonlinear interferometer, we circumvent these limitations and realise spectroscopy in the mid-IR using only a visible (VIS) solid-state laser and an off-the-shelf, commercial near-infrared (NIR) grating spectrometer. With this proof-of-concept implementation, covering a broad range from 3.2$\mu$m to 4.4$\mu$m, we access short integration times down to 1s and signal-to-noise ratios above 200 at a spectral resolution from 12cm$^{-1}$ down to 1.5cm$^{-1}$ for longer integration times. We demonstrate fast, mid-infrared (3.2-4.3 μm) spectroscopy with high resolution (1.5 cm܋1) based on nonlinear interferometry with undetected photons using a commercial, Si-CCD based grating spectrometer.

One of the central principles of quantum mechanics is that if there are multiple paths that lead to the same event and there is no way to distinguish between them, interference occurs. It is often assumed that distinguishing information in the preparation, evolution, or measurement of a system is sufficient to destroy interference. However, it is still possible for photons in distinguishable, separable states to interfere due to the indistinguishability of paths corresponding to possible exchange processes. Here we experimentally measure an interference signal that depends only on the multiparticle interference of four photons in a four-port interferometer despite pairs of them occupying distinguishable states.

Interferometric phase measurement is widely used to precisely determine quantities such as length, speed, and material properties. Without quantum correlations, the best phase sensitivity $\Delta\varphi$ achievable using $n$ photons is the shot noise limit (SNL), $\Delta\varphi=1/\sqrt{n}$. Quantum-enhanced metrology promises better sensitivity, but despite theoretical proposals stretching back decades, no measurement using photonic (i.e. definite photon number) quantum states has truly surpassed the SNL. Rather, all such demonstrations --- by discounting photon loss, detector inefficiency, or other imperfections --- have considered only a subset of the photons used. Here, we use an ultra-high efficiency photon source and detectors to perform unconditional entanglement-enhanced photonic interferometry. Sampling a birefringent phase shift, we demonstrate precision beyond the SNL without artificially correcting our results for loss and imperfections. Generating photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in nonlinear crystals is important for a wide range of quantum optics experiments with spectral properties such as their bandwidths often being a crucial concern. Here, we show the generic existence of particular phase-matching conditions in quasi-phase matched KTP, MgO:LN and SLT crystals that lead to ultra-broadband, widely non-degenerate photon pairs. It is based on the existence of group-velocity matched, far apart wavelength pairs and for 2 mm long crystals results in SPDC bandwidths between 15 and 25 THz (FWHM) for photon pairs with the idler photon in the technologically relevant mid-IR range 3-5 {\mu}m and the signal photon in the NIR below 1100 nm. We experimentally demonstrate this type of broadband phase-matching in ppKTP crystals for photon pairs centered at 800 nm and 3800 nm and measure a bandwidth of 15 THz. We implement mid-infrared frequency-domain optical coherence tomography based on a nonlinear interferometer using correlated photon-pairs, enabling high-resolution depth-scans of strongly scattering samples with high sensitivity, speed and lateral resolution.

Nonlinear optical microscopy techniques have emerged as a set of successful tools for biological imaging. Stimulated emission microscopy belongs to a small subset of pump–probe techniques, which can image non-fluorescent samples without requiring fluorescent labeling. However, its sensitivity has been shown to be ultimately limited by the quantum fluctuations in the probe beam. We propose and experimentally implement sub-shot-noise limited stimulated emission microscopy by preparing the probe pulse in an intensity-squeezed state. This technique paves the way for imaging delicate biological samples that have no detectable fluorescence with sensitivity beyond standard quantum fluctuations.

Entanglement is the key resource for many long-range quantum information tasks, including secure communication and fundamental tests of quantum physics. These tasks require robust verification of shared entanglement, but performing it over long distances is presently technologically intractable because the loss through an optical fiber or free-space channel opens up a detection loophole. We design and experimentally demonstrate a scheme that verifies entanglement in the presence of at least $14.8\pm0.1$ dB of added loss, equivalent to approximately $80$ km of telecommunication fiber. Our protocol relies on entanglement swapping to herald the presence of a photon after the lossy channel, enabling event-ready implementation of quantum steering. This result overcomes the key barrier in device-independent communication under realistic high-loss scenarios and in the realization of a quantum repeater., 8 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate the first unconditional violation of the shot noise limit in photonic NOON-state interferometry. Using ultrahigh-efficiency source and detectors we outperform ideal classical measurement without employing posts election, or correction for loss and imperfections.

Here we show that multi-particle quantum interference still occurs even when some of the particles involved are in orthogonal states. We experimentally demonstrate this with four photons.

It has recently been shown that optical parametric oscillator (OPO) Ising machines, consisting of coupled optical pulses circulating in a cavity with parametric gain, can be used to probabilistically find low-energy states of Ising spin systems. In this work, we study optical Ising machines that operate under simplified Gaussian dynamics. We show that these dynamics are sufficient for reaching probabilities of success comparable to previous work. Based on this result, we propose modified optical Ising machines with simpler designs that do not use parametric gain yet achieve similar performance, thus suggesting a route to building much larger systems., 6 pages

Hybrid light-matter networks offer the promise for delivering robust quantum information processing technologies, from sensor arrays to quantum simulators. New sources, detectors and memories illustrate progress towards build a resilient, scalable photonic quantum network.

Emulation of noiseless linear amplification of quantum states of light is demonstrated by post-selection of measurement data obtained by heterodyne detection. Using this protocol, Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen entanglement is recovered after its degradation by transmission loss. This protocol is applicable to other quantum communication protocols, including teleportation and remote state preparation.

Coherent interactions that generate negligible entanglement can still exhibit unique quantum behaviour. This observation has motivated a search beyond entanglement for a complete description of all quantum correlations. Quantum discord is a promising candidate. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that under certain measurement constraints, discord between bipartite systems can be consumed to encode information that can only be accessed by coherent quantum interactions. The inability to access this information by any other means allows us to use discord to directly quantify this 'quantum advantage'.

We present a quantum repeater scheme that uses gradient echo memory and probabilistic noiseless amplification. We show that a quantum memory can process quantum information and a noiseless amplifier can distill entanglement.

We introduce a simple and efficient technique to verify quantum discord in unknown Gaussian states and a certain class of non-Gaussian states. We show that any separation in the peaks of the marginal distributions of one subsystem conditioned on two different outcomes of homodyne measurements performed on the other subsystem indicates correlation between the corresponding quadratures, and hence nonzero discord. We also apply this method to non-Gaussian states that are prepared by overlapping a statistical mixture of coherent and vacuum states on a beam splitter. Quantum optics used to be clearly divided into two camps: continuous variables and discrete variables. Continuous variable experiments measured the quadrature variables of the optical field at side band frequencies using frequency resolved homodyne detection and typically employed ‘bright’ light sources of a few milliwatts. Discrete variable experiments measured the photon number in a particular time window using avalanche photodiodes and typically employed ‘weak’ light sources of a few nanowatts.

We show that quantum discord can quantify the information advantage of a quantum processing over an optimal classical processing. We experimentally extract a lower bound on the quantum discord of a non-entangled continuous-variable quantum system. © 2011 IEEE.

We demonstrate a new approach to photon number discrimination, relying only on continuous variable homodyne measurements. We apply this technique to the reconstruction of the non-Gaussian one, two and three photon subtracted squeezed vacuum state. This new technique is remarkable as it seemingly contradicts the accepted idea that non-Gaussian quantum states with negative Wigner functions cannot be produced using only the Gaussian resources and techniques exploited here.

The non-linearity of a conditional photon-counting measurement can be used to `de-Gaussify' a Gaussian state of light. Here we present and experimentally demonstrate a technique for photon number resolution using only homodyne detection. We then apply this technique to inform a conditional measurement; unambiguously reconstructing the statistics of the non-Gaussian one and two photon subtracted squeezed vacuum states. Although our photon number measurement relies on ensemble averages and cannot be used to prepare non-Gaussian states of light, its high efficiency, photon number resolving capabilities, and compatibility with the telecommunications band make it suitable for quantum information tasks relying on the outcomes of mean values., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. We experimentally demonstrate the reconstruction of a photon number conditioned state without using a photon number discriminating detector. By using only phase randomized homodyne measurements, we reconstruct up to the three photon subtracted squeezed vacuum state. The reconstructed Wigner functions of these states show regions of pronounced negativity, signifying the non-classical nature of the reconstructed states. The techniques presented allow for complete characterization of the role of a conditional measurement on an ensemble of states, and might prove useful in systems where photon counting still proves technically challenging.

Digital control of optics experiments has many advantages over analog control systems, specifically in terms of scalability, cost, flexibility, and the integration of system information into one location. We present a digital control system, freely available for download online, specifically designed for quantum optics experiments that allows for automatic and sequential re-locking of optical components. We show how the inbuilt locking analysis tools, including a white-noise network analyzer, can be used to help optimize individual locks, and verify the long term stability of the digital system. Finally, we present an example of the benefits of digital locking for quantum optics by applying the code to a specific experiment used to characterize optical Schrodinger cat states., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The unavoidable addition of noise during amplification is a well known signature of quantum mechanics. It is at the heart of fundamental results such as the no-cloning theorem, quantum limited metrology, quantum key distribution and the impossibility of increasing entanglement by local operations. Nonetheless one can still avoid the unavoidable by moving to a non-deterministic protocol. This novel concept and a linear optics implementation have been proposed [1] and experimentally realised for the case of amplifying coherent states [2-4], qubits [5,6] and the concentration of phase information [7]. All these were extremely challenging experiments, with only [2] demonstrating entanglement distillation and none directly showing the EPR distillation necessary for application to CV QKD. Furthermore the success probability of these experiments was substantially worse than the theoretical considerations would imply. However as has been noted in [8,9] it is possible to virtually implement noiseless amplification (NLA) and hence entanglement distillation via post-selective measurements, achieving significant distillation with a much improved probability of success.

We report on the preparation of entangled two mode squeezed states of yet unseen quality. Based on a measurement of the covariance matrix we found for the famous EPR-variance a value of 0.36. Furthermore, two mode quantum state tomography was used to extract single photon Fock states solely based on homodyne detection, demonstrating the strong quantum features of this entangled pair of laser beams. The probability for a single photon in this ensemble measurement exceeded 2/3.

For many years, the notion of quantum correlations was equated with the notion of quantum entanglement. The wide range of quantum protocols whose extra-powers over classical protocol were shown to originate from quantum entanglement mostly motivated this. For example, it was shown that for certain class of problems, a quantum computer could provide exponential speed-up over its classical counterpart, given that it relied on quantum entangled resources. Recently, however, the requirement of possessing entanglement to perform efficient quantum computation has been questioned both theoretically [1] and experimentally [2]. It appears that a non-classical quantity called quantum discord [3] is all that is required. © 2013 IEEE.
