The present study is a partial replication of the study presented in the preregistration titled: “Adolescents’ knowledge and their evaluation of the data business model in the context of social media”. More specifically, the research related to the evaluation of the “data business model” (i.e., “user-related, advertisement-based revenue model”) will be replicated in a sample of adults (18 years and older). The user-related, advertisement-based revenue model underlying various digital services, such as prominent social media platforms, is highly criticized. Specifically, this revenue model is expected to influence the design of digital services in a way that has negative impacts on individual users and society. On the positive side, of course, this revenue model allows individuals to use various digital services free of (monetary) charge. However, not a lot is known about how children and adolescents (see separate preregistration mentioned before) as well as adults (present preregistration) evaluate this revenue model in the context of social media. This is why the present study will examine the evaluation of this revenue model as well as hypothetical alternative models in the context of social media by adults. Moreover, differences in the evaluation will be associated with individual differences variables such as socio-demographic variables, personality, personal values, and social media use variables to examine the potential psychological basis of the evaluation (but note the cross-sectional character of this work, which will not allow for a causal interpretation of results). For this research project, participants who are at least 18 years of age will complete a cross-sectional online survey.
