We demonstrate a two-terminal and self-powered optoelectronic synaptic device based on a 2D lead-free perovskite, Cs3Bi2Br9. The fabricated device successfully mimics typical biological synaptic functions under programmed optical stimuli.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNA) participate in carcinogenesis and tumor progression in lung cancer. Here, we report the identification of a lncRNA signature associated with metastasis of non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In particular, elevated expression of LINC00963 (MetaLnc9) in human NSCLC specimens correlated with poor prognosis, promoted migration and invasion of NSCLC cells in vitro, and enhanced lung metastasis formation in vivo. Mechanistic investigations showed that MetaLnc9 interacted with the glycolytic kinase PGK1 and prevented its ubiquitination in NSCLC cells, leading to activation of the oncogenic AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. MetaLnc9 also interacted with P54nrb/NonO (NONO) to help mediate the activity of CRTC, a coactivator for the transcription factor CREB, reinforcing a positive feedback loop for metastasis. Taken together, our results establish MetaLnc9 as a driver of metastasis and a candidate therapeutic target for treating advanced NSCLC. Cancer Res; 77(21); 5782–94. ©2017 AACR.

Elemental doping and surface modification are commonly used strategies for improving the electrochemical performance of LiMn

It is well known that the electrochemical performance of spinel LiMn2O4 can be improved by Al doping. Herein, combining X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) with in situ electron-beam (E-beam) irradiation techniques, the influence of Al doping on the structural evolution and stability improvement of the LiMn2O4 cathode material is revealed. It is revealed that an appropriate concentration of Al3+ ions could dope into the spinel structure to form a more stable LiAlxMn2-xO4 phase framework, which can effectively stabilize the surface and bulk structure by inhibiting the dissolution of Mn ions during cycling. The optimized LiAl0.05Mn1.95O4 sample exhibits a superior capacity retention ratio of 80% after 1000 cycles at 10 C (1 C = 148 mA h g-1) in the voltage range of 3.0-4.5 V, which possesses an initial discharge capacity of 90.3 mA h g-1. Compared with the undoped LiMn2O4 sample, the Al-doped sample also shows superior rate performance, especially the capacity recovery performance.

2D transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, namely the MXenes, attract more and more attentions due to their unique properties. Here, we report a simple one-step molten salt etching method to prepare Co modified MXene hybrid (Ti3C2Tx:Co) by the reaction of Ti3AlC2 with Lewis acid CoCl2 at 750 °C. Most of Co atoms aggregates in the interlayered space of Ti3C2Tx. Benefitting from the improved electron charge transfer efficiency and increased active sites, the sulfuric acid treated Ti3C2Tx:Co-12h hybrid exhibits excellent electrocatalytical activity for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media, delivering a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 103.6 mV, which is lower than most noble metal free MXene based electrocatalysts. The results illustrate that the proposed method is very facile and useful to incorporate mid-to-late transition metals into the MXene phase to prepare MXene based HER electrocatalysts.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is characterized with high morbidity and mortality, mainly due to frequent recurrence and metastasis. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of NSCLC tumorigenesis are largely unclear. Through data mining in the ONCOMINE and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases, the expression of CSE1L (chromosome segregation like 1 protein/CAS), an exportin, was identified to be significantly upregulated in NSCLC and positively associated with poor prognosis of patients. By use of in vitro and in vivo gain- and loss-of-function experiments, we found that CSE1L can promote NSCLC cell proliferation while inhibiting cell apoptosis. Through immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry experiments, we demonstrated that CSE1L interacted with RELA (named as P65) and affected its location in the nucleus. Moreover, we found that one of the mechanisms by which CSE1L promotes proliferation and inhibits apoptosis is through activating the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. In summary, our findings indicated an oncogenic role of CSE1L in NSCLC tumorigenesis., Graphical abstract, Lin et al. introduce an exportin protein CSE1L that is generally upregulated in NSCLC and is negatively correlated with patients’ prognosis, along with the mechanism of activating the NF-κB/MAPK signaling pathway, which is expected to become a prognostic indicator and effective therapeutic target for NSCLC.

Layered Co(OH)2 has been regarded as a potential candidate for pseudocapacitor electrode material, but it is limited by its poor conductivity and low surface area. Herein, carbonated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) were used to improve the conductivity of α-Co(OH)2 nanocomposites. α-Co(OH)2 nanoflowers were successfully grown and tangled with MWCNTs-COOH to form a randomly oriented network structure mediated by ammonia using water-methanol as co-solvent at room temperature. The capacitance performances of the obtained α-Co(OH)2@MWCNT-COOH composites were investigated to find that MWCNT-COOH improved the specific capacitance efficiently. Especially, in the presence of 20% in mole of MWCNT-COOH, the composite gave rise to the high specific capacitance of 1027 F/g at the current density of 2 A/g with good cycle stability, whose specific capacitance remained 78% of its original even after 5000 cycles at 30 A/g current. The large surface area and strengthening the conductivity of the composites lead to the improvement of efficiency in charge/discharge process.

Halide perovskites (HPs) are promising materials for preparing nonvolatile memory and artificial synapse devices. However, the instability and toxicity of lead HPs seriously restrict their further application. Herein, a lead-free and air-stable Ag/polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/Cs2AgBiBr6/ITO device is fabricated, which exhibits typical resistive switching (RS) characteristics and synaptic behaviors, including long-term potentiation (LTP), long-term depression (LTD), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) and spike-dependent plasticity. The ion migration of Br− and Ag+ in Cs2AgBiBr6 led to the formation and fracture of a conductive filament. Notably, no obvious decay in the device performance was observed after being directly exposed to the ambient environment for 20 days, indicating that the device exhibits good environmental stability. Furthermore, the recognition rate reaches 91.3% by using the MNIST handwritten data set. This air-stable and lead-free device provides a new candidate for the next generation of neuromorphic computation based on halide perovskites.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive tumors with poor prognosis and new targetable therapies are urgently required. CSE1L (chromosome segregation 1 like) is thought to play an important role in tumorigenesis and acts as a cancer therapeutic target. However, the biological function and the underlying mechanism of CSE1L in pancreatic cancer are still not fully explicit. In the present study, we found that high CSE1L expression was related to a worse prognosis in patients with pancreatic cancer according to data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Additionally, we found that CSE1L knockdown inhibited the proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells and promoted apoptosis, while CSE1L overexpression demonstrated the opposite phenomenon. Furthermore, we discovered that CSE1L might regulate pancreatic cancer proliferation through AKT signaling pathway. In summary, we reveal that CSE1L plays a crucial role in tumor growth and may serve as a potential prognostic and therapeutic target for pancreatic cancer.

Currently there is tremendous interest in the discovery of low cost and efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, iron-doped nickel boride (FexNi1-xB) and nickel boride (NiB) were successfully grown on 3D self-supporting graphene (SSG) electrodes via a one-step reduction approach. The Fe0.2Ni0.8B/SSG electrode required a very low overpotential of only 263 mV for OER (the best OER activity achieved to date for a metal boride). NiB/SSG showed modest OER performance but excellent HER activity. A water electrolyzer comprising Fe0.2Ni0.8B/SSG and NiB/SSG delivered a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a voltage of only 1.62 V. Further, the Fe0.2Ni0.8B/SSG and NiB/SSG catalysts showed excellent stability with no deactivation observed over 14 h of testing. Results demonstrate that nickel boride-based electrocatalysts are promising lost cost alternatives to precious metal-based electrocatalysts for OER, HER and overall water splitting.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumor and its progression is associated with altered lipid metabolism in precancerous lesions, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Here, we identified sperm associated antigen 4 (SPAG4), and explored its oncogenic role in HCC progression. Database analysis and immunohistochemistry indicated increased level of SPAG4 in HCC tissues which was of prognostic value. Gain/loss-of-function experiments showed that SPAG4 exerted oncogenic roles in HCC growth both in vitro and in vivo. RNA sequencing revealed activation of a lipogenic state and SREBP1-mediated pathway following SPAG4 overexpression. Mechanistically, the N-terminal region of SPAG4 bound to lamin A/C, which increased SREBP1 expression, nuclear translocation, and transcriptional activity. Treatment with orlistat, a lipid synthesis inhibitor, reversed SPAG4-mediated oncogenic effects, and its efficacy varied with SPAG4 level. The effect of orlistat was further amplified when combined with sorafenib in tumor xenograft mouse models. Our study provides evidence that SPAG4 mediates HCC progression by affecting lipid metabolism. Administration of orlistat combined with sorafenib reverses SPAG4-mediated oncogenesis in HCC cells and ectopic xenograft tumors in mice, suggesting that this pathway represents a potential target for HCC treatment.

We report here the synthesis of hybrid manganese halide crystals, (C4H7N2)MnCl3 · H2O and (C4H7N2)2MnCl4, by using the same organic ligand 2-methylimidazole. Upon heating treatment, the red-emissive (C4H7N2)MnCl3 · H2O crystal is structurally transformed into green-emissive (C4H7N2)2MnCl4 crystal in situ. The crystal structural analysis reveals that the [MnCl5 · H2O]3− octahedra chains decompose into mono [MnCl4]2− tetrahedra, accompanied by the departure of H2O molecules. Upon cooling in air or water vapor, the crystal structure and luminescence of (C4H7N2)2MnCl4 are transformed to those of (C4H7N2)MnCl3 · H2O. The in situ conversion of luminescence between (C4H7N2)MnCl3 · H2O and (C4H7N2)2MnCl4 provides new insight into the potential application of hybrid manganese halides.

The transition metal dichalcogenide MoS2 shows good catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the HER activity of 2D MoS2 is limited by its poor electrical conductivity. Bi2Se3 nanosheets are topological insulators possessing metallic surface states, thereby displaying unconventional electron dynamics and excellent conductivity. Therefore, combining Bi2Se3 nanosheets and with MoS2 nanosheets represents a rational approach for improving the HER activity of MoS2. In this work, Bi2Se3 nanoflowers were first synthesized via a hot injection method, followed by the slow growth of MoS2 nanosheets on their surface to form heterostructured MoS2@Bi2Se3 nanoflowers. Compared to pristine Bi2Se3 and MoS2, the MoS2@Bi2Se3 nanoflowers exhibited outstanding HER activity in acidic media with an onset overpotential of 134 mV, an overpotential of 208 mV at 10 mA/cm2, a Tafel slope of 57 mV/dec and remarkable stability. The enhanced HER catalytic activity offered by the MoS2@Bi2Se3 nanoflowers is attributed excellent electron transfer from Bi2Se3 to MoS2, as well as the abundance of edge-rich MoS2 nanosheets vertically aligned on the Bi2Se3 support that act as H2 evolution sites.

The coexistence of ferroelectricity and luminescence in a material makes it a very interesting multifunctional material for fabricating new optoelectronic devices. As a single-component system with flexibility and structure tunability, organic–inorganic hybrid luminescent ferroelectrics are more attractive than previously reported rare-earth-doped ones. We herein report a new organic–inorganic hybrid ferroelectric, (C10H16N)2MnBr4, which exhibits ferroelectricity with a Curie temperature of 421 K and green-light emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of 88.52%. Furthermore, it shows excellent film-forming ability. The thin film with high quality can be easily prepared by a spin-coating method. These advantages make it have great potential application in optoelectronic devices.

Objective: Bone metastasis from patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma (LAC) is a very serious complication. To better understand the molecular mechanism, our current study sheds light on identification of hub genes mediating bone metastatic spread by combining bioinformatic analysis with functional verification. Methods: First, we downloaded a lung adenocarcinoma dataset ({"type":"entrez-geo","attrs":{"text":"GSE76194","term_id":"76194"}}GSE76194) from Gene Expression Omnibus, analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) through Limma package in R software and constructed a protein-protein interaction network. Based on that preliminary data, we further performed modular and topological analysis using Cystoscope to obtain biological connected genes. Through literature searching and performing mRNA expression analysis on the other independent public dataset ({"type":"entrez-geo","attrs":{"text":"GSE10799","term_id":"10799"}}GSE10799), we finally focused on TBX2. Functional effects of TBX2 were performed in tumorigenicity assays including migration and invasion assays, cell proliferation assay, and cell cycle assay. In addition, mechanically, we found enriched pathways related to bone metastasis using Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) and validated our results by western blot. The optoelectronic application of fluorescent lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals is limited by their poor stability in humid atmosphere. However, we found that high-quality and high-stability fluorescent perovskites embedded in PbBrOH can be synthesized via the reaction of PbBr2 with MBr (M: Cs or CH3NH3+) triggered with imidazole derivatives in water. Imidazole can etch and hydrolyze the nonluminescent MPbBr3 to form high-quality fluorescent perovskites. After the perovskites are formed, a protective PbBrOH matrix grows rapidly on the surface of the perovskite nanocrystals and acts as a water-resistant layer. The embedded fluorescent perovskites can exhibit great stability even in water, heat and UV light with a PLQY of up to 30%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the enhanced stability results from the positive energy cost of the water molecule entering the lattice of PbBrOH, which is much higher than the negative value for water entering CsPbBr3; therefore, water is prevented by the PbBrOH surface from entering the embedded fluorescent perovskite. The PbBrOH surface layer has twofold beneficial effects: (i) preventing water from entering the perovskite nanocrystals, (ii) dispersing the perovskite nanocrystals in the matrix and preventing their aggregation so that highly luminescent composites can be formed. Our strategy opens a new avenue for the development of high-efficiency and high-stability fluorescent inorganic and organic perovskites.

Great attention has been paid to organic–inorganic hybrids in searching for single-phase multiferroics because of their flexible structure design. Here, a new [CuCl4]2− based organic–inorganic hybrid, (bix)CuCl4·H2O (bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene), is synthesized via a simple solution method. Different from most [CuCl4]2− based organic–inorganic hybrids, tetrahedral [CuCl4]2− units in (bix)CuCl4·H2O are connected to each other through water molecules and form one dimensional chains. The coexistence of ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic ordering in (bix)CuCl4·H2O is demonstrated. Its spontaneous polarization and coercive field at room temperature are 2.03 μC cm−2 and 0.32 kV cm−1, respectively. Furthermore, (bix)CuCl4·H2O films with high quality can be easily prepared, which makes them suitable for application in device fabrication.

The development of efficient, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for large-scale, economically viable water splitting. In this work, we successfully prepared non-precious metal CoB@MoS2 hybrid electrocatalysts for the HER in alkaline media by the reductive growth of cobalt boride nanoparticles (CoB NPs) on the surface of MoS2 nanoflowers (MoS2 NFs). The CoB@MoS2-0.5–300 hybrid showed an HER overpotential of only 146 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 80.9 mV dec−1 in 1.0 M KOH solution. The significantly enhanced HER activity of the hybrid is primarily attributable to the ability of CoB to drive the OER in alkaline solution and improved electrical conductivity of the hybrid electrocatalyst relative to the pristine MoS2. Furthermore, the synthetic strategy used to prepare the CoB@MoS2 electrocatalyst was successfully applied to prepare NiB@MoS2 and FeB@MoS2 hybrid electrocatalysts, which similarly showed very good HER activity in 1.0 M KOH solution. Thus, this work conclusively demonstrates that the introduction of transition metal borides is an effective approach for enhancing the HER performance of MoS2 in alkaline media.

Hydrogen production from water splitting through electrocatalytic or photoelectrochemical route shows great potential for renewable energy conversion. Herein, the plasmon-enhanced photoelectrical nanocatalysts (NCs) have been successfully developed by Au nanoparticle-decorated Bi2Se3 nanoflowers (Au@Bi2Se3 NFs) as catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), leading to a more than 3-fold increase of current under excitation of Au localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and affording a markedly decreased overpotential of 375 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The HER enhancement can be largely attributed to effective electron-charge separation and the increase of carrier density in Bi2Se3 induced by the injection of hot electrons of Au nanoparticles. Meanwhile, Bi2Se3 nanoflowers (NFs), a kind of topological insulators, possess gapless edges on boundary and show metallic character on surface, providing a path for the flow of electrons in the electrocatalytic system. This study opens up a new avenue towards the design of higher energy conversion catalytic water splitting systems with the assistance of light energy, which could increase of HER catalysis efficiency by plasmonic excitation.

In recent years, great efforts are paying to design and understand the origins of elastic flexibility of molecular crystals. In this work, we investigate the elastic flexibility of two ferroelectric supramolecular co-crystals, phenazine-chloranilic acid (Phz-H2ca) and phenazine-bromanilic acid (Phz-H2ba) for the first time. Both of them show good elastic flexibility while the flexibility of the Phz-H2ca co-crystal is better. The measurements of mechanical properties show that the Phz-H2ca co-crystal has larger elastic modulus and smaller hardness value than the Phz-H2ba co-crystal. The bent co-crystal still keeps the ferroelectric properties. The Raman spectra reveal that the weak hydrogen-bond, halogen-bond and π···π stacking interactions contribute to the observed elastic flexibility of the co-crystals.

The catalytic activities of three topotactic phase strontium cobaltites (SCO, hexagonal, orthorhombic and tetragonal) for H2O2 decomposition were studied. All they present excellent catalytic activity with good stability at cycled test, and the mesoporous tetragonal SCO exhibits the best activity. Detailed kinetic research indicates the zero-order process of H2O2 decomposition. Increasing the temperature will accelerate the reactions greatly with the controlled temperature in the range of 20–45 °C. The calculated active energy (Ea) for H-SCO, O-SCO and T-SCO is 93.2, 85.1 and 87.5 (kJ/mol), respectively. The efficient catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B illustrates that SCO is a kind of promising catalysis for the advanced oxidation process.

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and cupric oxide (CuO) are widely available and low cost raw materials. Their applications as precursors for wet chemical synthesis of metallic Cu materials are greatly limited due to their insoluble in water and most organic solvents. In this work, copper superfine particles (Cu SPs) are synthesized using Cu2O and CuO as precursors via a heating process in monoethanoamine (MEA). Due to the strong coordinating character, Cu2O and CuO can be partially dissolved in MEA. The dissolved copper source is reduced by MEA at elevated temperature with the drastically releasing of NH3. As the dissolved copper source is reduced, more oxide will be dissolved and finally leads to the full reduction of Cu2O and CuO to produce the Cu SPs. The advantage of this synthesis method is that MEA acts as both the solvent and the reducing agent. The antimicrobial properties are investigated to find that the obtained Cu SPs depress the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (St. aureus) efficiently. More interesting, the composites produced via curing Cu2O and CuO with a small amount of MEA also exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity, indicating the MEA curing method is high-efficiency. The synthesis is low cost, high-efficiency, high atom-economy and up-scale synthesizing easily, which will benefit the wide applications of Cu SPs.

Background: Cancer cells can utilize the transportins into and out of the nucleus to stimulate tumor growth and to effectively evade apoptotic mechanisms. We aimed to identify transportins that are overexpressed in Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and might be targeted to slow the tumor growth. Methods: Using the ONCOMINE and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases, we compared the gene expression of 24 importins and exportins in 20 cancer microarray datasets and then analyzed the survival of the candidate genes, CSE1L (Chromosome Segregation Like 1 protein/CAS) was finally selected. The expression level of CSE1L was detected in both NSCLC cells and clinical samples. To evaluate the function of CSE1L in vitro and in vivo, CCK-8, colony formation, cell apoptosis and subcutaneous tumor model were performed. The co-immunoprecipitation experiment combined with mass spectrometry was conducted to find out the protein interacted with CSE1L. The underlying mechanism was investigated by RNA-seq and Western blot.Results: 7 transportins were over-expressed in NSCLC patients, and higher expression of CSE1L and XPO5 are associated with shorter survival times. CSE1L was a exportin while the role of tumorigenicity in NSCLC remain unknown. Increased expression of CSE1L in tumor tissues associated with shorter survival times and advanced pathological stage of patients with cancer. The gain- and loss-of-function assays indicated that CSE1L promoted NSCLC cells proliferation and inhibits cells apoptosis. Additionally, we confirmed that CSE1L interacted with RELA (named as P65), and affected its expression in nucleus. RNA-seq results indicated that CSE1L activated the MAPK signaling pathway in NSCLC cells by increasing activity of P65.Conclusions: We reveal the oncogenic role of CSE1L in NSCLC cancer carcinogenesis. CSE1L promotes proliferation of NSCLC cells by activating the MAPK signaling pathway and inhibiting apoptosis in coordination with P65. Our findings highlight that CSE1L may be a target for the treatment of NSCLC cancer.

The [Zr(OH)5]− imidazolium complex was used to synthesize a zirconia precursor with plate-like nanostructue hydrolyzed under strong acid conditions, which was characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma and electronic differential system. The zirconia precursor can be transformed to monoclinic ZrO2 by annealing at a temperature above 400 °C. With the increasing of the curing temperature, it tended to give rise to porous ZrO2 nanostructures.
