We can’t wait for breakthrough technologies to deliver net-zero emissions by 2050. Instead, we can plan to respond to climate change using today’s technologies with incremental change. This will reveal many opportunities for growth but requires a public discussion about future lifestyles.

Steel-reinforced concrete, cast in flat prismatic forms, dominates multi-storey building construction around the world. Despite the fluidity of the material, opportunities to create efficient geometries through manipulation of form are habitually overlooked, resulting in inefficient cracked sections, high steel requirements and large carbon footprints. This project brings together modern developments in computational design, materials and construction to propose a novel thin-shell concrete flooring system for multi-storey buildings, creating a low embodied energy and lightweight alternative to traditional reinforced concrete flat slabs. In this investigation, the performance of various shell geometries are compared using finite element analysis. A functional design is produced and found to offer reductions of 62% in embodied energy and 64% in weight compared to an equivalent flat slab.

Combined SW IV-134 and gemcitabine therapy induces a moderate decrease in WBC count and has no effect on the other CBC parameters in tumor-bearing mice. Complete blood count (CBC) of immunocompromised nude mice treated daily with SW IV-134 and weekly gemcitabine for 3 weeks compared to vehicle (control). WBC is reduced in the drug group, with mean = 2.4 compared to 4.7 in the control group (p = 0.02). To evaluate the most sensitive life stage of the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) at which to determine the maximum tolerated dose for chronic carcinogenicity bioassays, the effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) on growth and survival of the medaka were examined at several life stages. A series of 7-day flow-through exposures was conducted with medaka at 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 28, 42, and approximately 180 days posthatch. Growth, measured as standard length and area, was more sensitive than survival in fish that were 4 to 13 days old at the start of the tests. Medaka 7, 10, and 13 days posthatch established the lowest observed effect concentration for all life stages, based on growth at 8.8 to 10.1 mg/L. There were no significant effects on growth of fish more than 16 days old at the study's initiation. Values of lethal concentration to 50% of the test organism calculated for the various life stages ranged from 23.0 mg/L for 16-day-old fry to 37.0 mg/L for 4-day-old fry. HAIPE® devices provide encrypted tunneling and transporting services for Internet Protocol (IP) datagrams through an unsecured network on behalf of secure Plain Text (PT) enclaves. Traditionally, secure tunnels were established by manually configuring the local HAIPE with information for peer enclaves. When a large number of enclaves are involved, automation of this configuration process improves administrative efficiency and reduces errors. Such automation is known as HAIPE Peer Discovery, or HPD. With the support of the HAIPE Interoperability Specification (HAIPE IS) Generic Discovery Client (GDC) Extension, HAIPEs can communicate with a generic discovery server (GDS) that implements a server-based HPD service. The HAIPE IS GDC Extension specifies only how a HAIPE communicates with a GDS. It does not specify a mechanism for exchanging HAIPE peer information between GDSes. In this paper we describe a protocol mechanism for exchanging discovery information among GDSes. This protocol, which we refer to as the GDS-B protocol, reuses Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Tunnel mechanisms to encode and disseminate HAIPE and enclave routing information among servers. Servers implementing the GDS-B protocol, known as GDS-B Servers, obtain and provide this information to client HAIPEs via the HAIPE IS GDC Extension. We describe the design and implementation of a GDS-B Server using open-source routing software and present the status of this implementation when used in large-scale scenarios.

Rapid global urbanisation and population growth is driving unprecedented levels of building construction, with the total worldwide floor area expected to almost double over the next 40 years. Since most of the structural material in a building exists within the floors, these present a significant opportunity for structural engineers to contribute to a more sustainable construction industry.This paper examines a novel flooring system of textile-reinforced concrete shells with a foamed concrete fill, which has the potential to halve the amount of materials in a building’s entire structure. A new design and geometry optimisation method is described, as well as the construction and testing of two prototypes; each 18mm thick, 2m in span and 200mm tall. These textile-reinforced concrete shells are unconventional in their low total depth, low reinforcement content and lack of rigid supports. Both were reinforced with AR-glass fibre textile and constructed using fine-grained concrete, however only one featured a foamed concrete fill. Each was tested to destruction under an asymmetric load. In both cases, a hinged collapse mechanism was formed rather than sudden catastrophic failure, with positive implications for safety and robustness.A non-linear finite element model was developed which replicated the observed behaviour well, including cracking patterns. Inaccuracies in geometry arising from the hand-made construction methods were measured and their structural impact was assessed and found to be small.The investigations confirm the strength, robustness and buildability of the structural system, and establish a reliable analysis method.
