The evolution of young stars and disks is driven by the interplay of several processes, notably accretion and ejection of material. Critical to correctly describe the conditions of planet formation, these processes are best probed spectroscopically. International audience; Diffraction fundamentally limits our ability to image and characterize exoplanets. Interferometry offers some advantages in exoplanet detection and characterization and we explore in this white paper some of the potential scientific breakthroughs possible.

International audience; In this white paper, we explore how higher angular resolution beyond ALMA and 8m-class telescopes can extend our understanding of the key stages of planet formation, to resolve accreting circumplanetary disks themselves, and to watch planets forming in situ for the nearest star-forming regions.

We present the results of a series of numerical simulations using the Athena code aimed at recovering the range of possible initial conditions for protostellar objects starting at cluster scales. With a series of weakly and strongly magnetized runs, we discuss the effects of magnetic fields on the range of possible outcomes for protostars and their immediate environments.

We present a survey of the Orion A and B molecular clouds undertaken with the IRAC and MIPS instruments onboard Spitzer. In total, five distinct fields were mapped covering 9 sq. degrees in five mid-IR bands spanning 3-24 microns. The survey includes the Orion Nebula Cluster, the Lynds 1641, 1630 and 1622 dark clouds, and the NGC 2023, 2024, 2068 and 2071 nebulae. These data are merged with the 2MASS point source catalog to generate a catalog of eight band photometry. We identify 3479 dusty young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Orion molecular clouds by searching for point sources with mid-IR colors indicative of reprocessed light from dusty disks or infalling envelopes. The YSOs are subsequently classified on the basis of their mid-IR colors and their spatial distributions are presented. We classify 2991 of the YSOs as pre-main sequence stars with disks and 488 as likely protostars. Most of the sources were observed with IRAC in 2-3 epochs over 6 months; we search for variability between the epochs by looking for correlated variability in the 3.6 and 4.5 micron bands. We find that 50% of the dusty YSOs show variability. The variations are typically small (0.2 mag.) with the protostars showing a higher incidence of variability and larger variations. The observed correlations between the 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8 micron variability suggests that we are observing variations in the heating of the inner disk due to changes in the accretion luminosity or rotating accretion hot spots., Accepted to the Astronomical Journal. Using SpeX at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph, we have obtained infrared spectra from 0.7 to 30um for three young brown dwarfs in the TW Hydra Association (~10 Myr), 2M J1207-3932, 2M J1139-3159, and SS J1102-3431. The spectral energy distribution for 2M J1139-3159 is consistent with a stellar photosphere for the entire wavelength range of our data while the other two objects exhibit significant excess emission at >5um. We are able to reproduce the excess emission from each brown dwarf using our models of irradiated accretion disks. According to our model fits, both disks have experienced a high degree of dust settling. We also find that silicate emission at 10 and 20um is absent from the spectra of these disks, indicating that grains in the upper disk layers have grown to sizes larger than ~5um. Both of these characteristics are consistent with previous observations of decreasing silicate emission with lower stellar masses and older ages. These trends suggest that either 1) the growth of dust grains, and perhaps planetesimal formation, occurs faster in disks around brown dwarfs than in disks around stars, or 2) the radii of the mid-IR-emitting regions of disks are smaller for brown dwarfs than for stars, and grains grow faster at smaller disk radii. We report new Spitzer Space Telescope observations from the IRAC and MIPS instruments of the young (~ 3 Myr) sigma Orionis cluster. We identify 336 stars as members of the cluster using optical and near-infrared color magnitude diagrams. Using the spectral energy distribution (SED) slopes in the IRAC spectral range, we place objects in several classes: non-excess stars, stars with optically thick disks(like classical T Tauri stars), class I (protostellar) candidates, and stars with ``evolved disks''; the last exhibit smaller IRAC excesses than optically thick disk systems. In general, this classification agrees with the location expected in IRAC-MIPS color-color diagrams for these objects. We find that the evolved disk systems are mostly a combination of objects with optically thick but non-flared disks, suggesting grain growth and/or settling, and transition disks, systems in which the inner disk is partially or fully cleared of small dust. In all, we identify 7 transition disk candidates and 3 possible debris disk systems. As in other young stellar populations, the fraction of disks depends on the stellar mass, ranging from ~10% for stars in the Herbig Ae/Be mass range (>2 msun) to ~35% in the T Tauri mass range (1-0.1 msun). We show that quantum mechanical entanglement can prevail even in noisy open quantum systems at high temperature and far from thermodynamical equilibrium, despite the deteriorating effect of decoherence. The system consists of a number N of interacting quantum particles, and it can interact and exchange particles with some environment. The effect of decoherence is counteracted by a simple mechanism, where system particles are randomly reset to some standard initial state, e.g. by replacing them with particles from the environment. We present a master equation that describes this process, which we can solve analytically for small N. If we vary the interaction strength and the reset against decoherence rate, we find a threshold below which the equilibrium state is classically correlated, and above which there is a parameter region with genuine entanglement., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present recent results from our ongoing large scale variability survey of the Orion OB1 Association. In an area of ~ 25 square degrees we have unveiled new populations of low-mass young stars over a range of environments, and ages from 1-2 Myr in Ori OB 1b to roughly 10 Myr in Ori OB 1a. There is a lack of strong Ha emission and near-IR excesses in the young stars of Ori OB 1a, suggesting that accretion stops and disks dissipate for most solar type stars in a few Myr, probably caused by of the onset of planet formation. The absence of dust and gas in Ori OB 1a is consistent with the picture of star formation as a rapid process, in which molecular clouds dissipate in just a few Myr after the first stars are born., Comment: 3 pages, 2 Figures, LaTeX (style and macro file included). We present new 10.8 and 18.2 micron images of HR 4796A, a young A0V star that was recently discovered to have a spectacular, nearly edge-on, circumstellar disk prominent at ~20 microns (Jayawardhana et al. 1998; Koerner et al. 1998). These new images, obtained with OSCIR at Keck II, show that the disk's size at 10 microns is comparable to its size at 18 microns. Therefore, the 18 micron-emitting dust may also emit some, or all, of the 10 micron radiation. Using these multi-wavelength images, we determine a "characteristic" diameter of 2-3 microns for the mid-infrared-emitting dust particles if they are spherical and composed of astronomical silicates. Particles this small are expected to be blown out of the system by radiation pressure in a few hundred years, and therefore these particles are unlikely to be primordial. Dynamical modeling of the disk (Wyatt et al. 2000) indicates that the disk surface density is relatively sharply peaked near 70 AU, which agrees with the mean annular radius deduced by Schneider et al. (1999) from their NICMOS images. We present evidence (~1.8 sigma significance) for a brightness asymmetry that may result from the presence of the hole and the gravitational perturbation of the disk particle orbits by the low-mass stellar companion or a planet. This "pericenter glow," which must still be confirmed, results from a very small (a few AU) shift of the disk's center of symmetry relative to the central star HR 4796A; one side of the inner boundary of the annulus is shifted towards HR 4796A, thereby becoming warmer and more infrared-emitting. The possible detection of pericenter glow implies that the detection of even complex dynamical effects of planets on disks is within reach., 18 pages. 9 GIF images. Total size ~800 kB. We estimate here the age of one of the prototypes of the Beta Pic-like stars, Fomalhaut, based on the properties of its common proper motion companion Gl879. By combining constraints derived from the lithium abundance, rotational velocity, HR diagram position, and coronal activity we conclude that the age for Gl879, and hence the age for Fomalhaut, is 200$\pm$100 Myr. This age estimate agrees quite well with the completely independent age estimate derived directly from isochrone--fitting to Fomalhaut's position in an HR diagram, and thus confirms that circumstellar dust disks can persist in A stars for several hundred Myr., 27 pages, Postscript file

Platelets of reserpinized rabbits, incubated in buffer containing tritiated 5-hydroxytryptamine (3H-5HT), have the ability to convert 3H-5HT into labeled compound(s) extractable with alkaline-chloroform. The bulk of the chloroform-extractable radioactivity showed a Rf value similar to authentic melatonin on silicagel thin-layer chromatography. The labelled product eluted with ethanol from the silicagel area where melatonin was suspected to reside was identified as melatonin by mass spectrometry and radioimmunoassay. Our in vitro experiments demonstrate that rabbit platelets are capable of converting 5-HT into melatonin apparently because they possess the enzymatic equipment necessary for this biosynthesis i.e. serotonin N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase.

We announce the release of a catalog of physical models of irradiated accretion disks around young stars based on the modelling techniques by D'Alessio et al. The WWW catalog includes ~ 3000 disk models for different central stars, disk sizes, inclinations, dust contents and mass accretion rates. For any of them, radial profiles of disk physical parameters and synthetic spectral energy distributions can be browsed and downloaded to compare with observations. In the United States, ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women. The most important prognostic factor for this cancer is tumor stage, or extent of disease at diagnosis. Although women with low-stage tumors have a relatively good prognosis, most women diagnosed with late-stage disease eventually succumb to their cancer. In an attempt to understand early events in ovarian carcinogenesis, and to explore steps in its progression, we have applied multiple molecular genetic techniques to the analysis of 21 early-stage (stage I/II) and 17 advanced-stage (stage III/IV) ovarian tumors. These techniques included expression profiling with cDNA microarrays containing approximately 18,000 expressed sequences, and comparative genomic hybridization to address the chromosomal locations of copy number gains as well as losses. Results from the analysis indicate that early-stage ovarian cancers exhibit profound alterations in gene expression, many of which are similar to those identified in late-stage tumors. However, differences observed at the genomic level suggest differences between the early- and late-stage tumors and provide support for a progression model for ovarian cancer development.
