OBJECTIVES Whether the presence or evolution of right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) affects the prognosis and the therapeutic choice between coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or medical therapy alone in patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) remains unclear. We investigate the prognostic and therapeutic implications of RVD in patients with ICM. METHODS Patients with baseline echocardiographic right ventricular (RV) assessment were included from the Surgical Treatment of Ischaemic Heart Failure trial. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. RESULTS Of 1212 patients enrolled in the Surgical Treatment of Ischaemic Heart Failure trial, 1042 patients were included, with 143 (13.7%) mild RVD and 142 (13.6%) moderate-to-severe RVD. After a median follow-up of 9.8 years, compared with patients with normal RV function, patients with RVD had a higher risk of mortality [mild RVD: adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.32; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06–1.65; moderate-to-severe RVD: aHR, 1.75; 95% CI 1.40–2.19]. Among patients with moderate-to-severe RVD, CABG provided no additional survival benefits compared to medical therapy alone (aHR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.67–1.43). Among 746 patients with pre- and post-therapeutic RV assessment, a gradient risk for death increased from patients with consistent normal RV function, to patients with recovery from RVD, new-onset RVD and persistent RVD. CONCLUSIONS RVD was associated with a worse prognosis in patients with ICM, and CABG provided no additional survival benefits to patients with moderate-to-severe RVD. The evolution of RV function had important prognostic implications, which emphasized the importance of both pre- and post-therapeutic RV assessment.

Multiferroic materials have great potential in non-volatile devices for low-power and ultra-high density information storage, owing to their unique characteristic of coexisting ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders. The effective manipulation of their intrinsic anisotropy makes it promising to control multiple degrees of the storage “medium”. Here, we have discovered intriguing in-plane electrical and magnetic anisotropies in van der Waals (vdW) multiferroic CuCrP2S6. The uniaxial anisotropies of current rectifications, magnetic properties and magnon modes are demonstrated and manipulated by electric direction/polarity, temperature variation and magnetic field. More important, we have discovered the spin-flop transition corresponding to specific resonance modes, and determined the anisotropy parameters by consistent model fittings and theoretical calculations. Our work provides in-depth investigation and quantitative analysis of electrical and magnetic anisotropies with the same easy axis in vdW multiferroics, which will stimulate potential device applications of artificial bionic synapses, multi-terminal spintronic chips and magnetoelectric devices.

In this paper, an advanced surface-grafting method is reported to improve the high-temperature performance of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) membranes. The leakage conductivity of the surface-grafted films decreases by 98% at 85 °C. The decline in the leakage loss contributes to the 99% charge-efficiency at 85 °C. The dielectric constant increases by 7%. The DC breakdown strength grows by 43% at 85 °C. The maximum energy storage density goes up from 1.45 to 2.77 J/cm3 at 85 °C. The surface-grafted BOPP film exhibits outstanding energy density and charge-discharge efficiency characteristics. This research provides a theoretical reference for improving the performance of capacitor film based on surface modification.

In this paper, a novel modification method for biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) membranes is proposed based on surface-grafting technology. The experimental results show that, compared with the pristine samples, the surface-grafted films show better breakdown strength under different voltage stress especially at higher temperatures (85 °C). The DC withstand strength of the surface-grafted PP membranes grows by 42.7% from 386.4 to 551.2 kV/mm. The breakdown strength climbs by 63.5% from 305.9 to 500.2 kV/mm under DC superimposed pulse voltage. Under DC superimposed harmonic stress, the breakdown strength is increased from 175.6 to 587.4 kV/mm by 234%. The influence of surface modification on charge transmission behavior is proposed based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulation. This research provides a theoretical and methodological reference for performance optimization by surface modification for BOPP capacitors.

We present here the synthesis and in-depth physicochemical characterization of a double hetero[7]helicene fused with four triazole rings at both helical ends. The comparison of this triazole-fused double helicene with the previously reported all-carbon and thiadiazole-fused analogs revealed the huge impact of the embedded aromatic rings on the photophysical features. The small structural variation of the terminal rings from thiadiazole to triazole caused a dramatic change of the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) from1 % to 96 %, while the replacement of the terminal benzene rings with triazole rings induced a tenfold enhancement of the circularly polarized luminescence dissymmetry factor. These observations were well corroborated with transient absorption analysis and/or theoretic calculations. In addition, the triazole-fused double helicene exhibited ambipolar redox behavior, enabling the generation of radical cation and anion species by electrochemical and chemical methods and showing its potential for spin-related applications.

An X-shaped double [7]heterohelicene 1 bearing four thiadiazole units is synthesized by regioselective cyclodehydrogenation. Enantiopure 1 exhibits excellent chiroptical properties with an impressive absorption dissymmetry factor of up to 0.027, as well as a compact π-stacked homochiral assembly which is unprecedented in the realm of double helicenes.

Molecular face-rotating polyhedra (FRP) exhibit complex stereochemistry, rendering it challenging to manipulate their assembly in a stereoselective manner. In our previous work, stereocontrolled FRP were gained at the cost of losing the confined inner space, which hampers their host–guest interactions and potential applications. Through a rational design approach, herein we demonstrate the successful construction of hollow FRP with high diastereoselectivity. Whereas the [4 + 4] imine condensation of meta-formyl substituted C3h-symmetric TAT-m and C3-symmetric Tri-NH2 led to the formation of all feasible FRP-12 diastereoisomers; the para-substituted constitutional isomer, TAT-p, exclusively assembled into a pair of homo-directional enantiomeric FRP-13-CCCC/AAAA with a cavity size larger than 600 Å3. Detailed structural characterizations and theoretical investigations revealed the thermodynamic landscape of FRP assembly can be effectively shaped by modulating the van der Waals repulsive forces among the facial building blocks. Our work provided a novel strategy towards stereospecific assembly of pure organic cages, opening up new opportunities for further applications of these chiral materials., The rationally engineered facial units, TAT-m and TAT-p, resulted in distinct diastereoselectivity of face-rotating polyhedra (FRP).

International audience; Recently, the interest in spin pumping has escalated from ferromagnets into antiferromagnetic systems, potentially enabling fundamental physics and magnonic applications. Compensated ferrimagnets are considered alternative platforms for bridging ferroand antiferromagnets, but their spin pumping and the associated magnetic damping have been largely overlooked so far despite their seminal importance for magnonics. Herein, we report an unconventional spin pumping together with magnetic damping in an insulating compensated ferrimagnet Gd3Fe5O12. Remarkably, we unambiguously identified the divergence of the nonlocal effective magnetic damping induced by spin pumping close to the compensation temperature in Gd3Fe5O12/Cu/Pt heterostructures. Furthermore, the coherent and incoherent spin currents, generated by spin pumping and spin Seebeck effect respectively, undergo a distinct direction change with the variation of temperature. The physical mechanisms underlying these observations are self-consistently clarified by the ferrimagnetic counterpart of spin pumping and the handedness-related spin-wave spectra. Our findings broaden the conventional paradigm of the ferromagnetic spin pumping model and open new opportunities for exploring the ferrimagnetic magnonic devices.

Discovering novel families of molecular polyhedra through graph theory has attracted increasing interest. Nevertheless, the design principles of molecular polyhedra based on graph theory remain elusive, especially for those containing five-node units. Herein, we construct a series of chiral truncated face-rotating polyhedra (T-FRP) from pentagonal pentaphenylpyrrole (PPP) derivatives and chiral diamines. Graph theory is used to elucidate the geometry of these novel T-FRP, which represent a new family of molecular polyhedra. The phenyl flipping of PPP faces in these T-FRP is significantly restricted, thus making T-FRP chiral and strongly emissive in solution. In addition, T-FRP also generate circularly polarized luminescence. This study provides new insights into the rational design of novel molecular polyhedra through graph theory.

Although the magnetic relaxation mechanism in ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic (FM/NM) bilayers has been commendably established, the nonlocal Gilbert damping has been much less addressed in spin valve configurations of FM/NM/FM associated with both the static interlayer exchange coupling and the dynamic coupling. Here, we report the dimensional crossover role of the Pd layer on magnetic relaxation in Fe/Pd/Fe trilayer structures. We identify a pronounced jump of Gilbert damping across the characteristic static interlayer exchange coupling length of Fe/Pd/Fe. The significant enhancement and suppression of Gilbert damping values are ascribed to the entanglement of the dynamics of the two Fe layers mediated by the static exchange coupling and the dynamic exchange coupling. Our work deepens the understanding to manipulate the spin transport and magnetic relaxation via the coherence of spin current.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the mechanism underlying cerebral dysfunction after deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA), although the exact details have not been elucidated. To explore the expression profiles of lncRNAs and miRNAs in DHCA cerebral injury, we determined the lncRNA, miRNA and mRNA expression profiles in the cerebral cortex of DHCA and sham rats. First, a rat model of DHCA was established, and high-throughput sequencing was performed to analyze the differentially expressed RNAs (DERNAs). Then, the principal functions of the significantly deregulated genes were identified using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. Expression networks (lncRNAs-miRNAs-mRNAs and transcription factors (TFs)-miRNAs-mRNAs) were also established. Finally, the expression of DERNAs was confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). We identified 89 lncRNAs, 45 miRNAs and 59 mRNAs between the DHCA and sham groups and constructed a comprehensive competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) network. A TF-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network was also established. Finally, we predicted that Lcorl-miR-200a-3p-Ttr, BRD4-Ccl2 and Ep300-miR-200b-3p-Tmem72 may participate in the pathogenesis of DHCA cerebral injury.

Alkali–surfactant–polymer (ASP)-produced effluent contains polymer, alkali and surfactant, and it has higher content of suspended oil droplets and suspended solids than ordinary effluent. To decrease environmental pollution caused by the discharge of produced effluent, the feasibility of re-injecting a new ASP flooding system prepared with ASP-produced effluent was studied and discussed in this paper. The results of the experiments reveal that three main factors affect the performance of the new ASP system: the polymer concentration, the suspended oil droplet and suspended solids content and the salinity of the ASP-produced effluent. It is recommended that the average content of suspended oil droplets and suspended solids does not exceed 500 mg/l and that the salinity does not exceed 8000 mg/l when the produced effluent is introduced into a new ASP system. Subsequently, a laboratory displacement experiment on ASP flooding was performed. The experimental results reveal that the oil recovery of the new ASP flooding system was improved by 20.38%, and the ultimate oil recovery was 65.46%, which is 0.65% higher than that of an ASP flooding system prepared with ordinary effluent. ASP-produced effluent and ordinary effluent achieve nearly the same oil recovery. However, ASP-produced effluent is more environmentally friendly. An oil displacement test of ASP flooding with a new ASP flooding system was conducted in block A of W oil field, and good development results were achieved: The 25 production wells in the pilot test area were all effectively improved, with the minimum water cut reduced by 14.40% and the average daily oil production increased by 51.28 tons.

Magneto-electroluminescence (MEL) represents the electroluminescence intensity change upon application of an external magnetic field. We show that the MEL field response in “magnetic” organic light-emitting diodes, where one electrode is ferromagnetic (FM), is a powerful technique for measuring the induced fringe field, BF, from the FM electrode in the organic layer. We found that the in-plane fringe field, BF∥, from 3 nm Co and Ni80Fe20 FM electrodes is proportional to the applied field, B∥. The fringe field of the 3 nm Ni80Fe20 film was also investigated for an applied out-of-plane magnetic field, B⊥. We found that the out-of-plane fringe field has two components: a component that is parallel or antiparallel to B⊥ and remains unchanged with the distance, d, from the FM electrode and the other component that is highly inhomogeneous, parallel to the surface, and steeply decreases with d.
