The regenerated cellulose membrane (RC) was synthesized by dissolving cotton cellulose in NaOH/CO(NH2)2 system. The Polydopamine/Bismuth Tungstate/RC composite membrane (RCPB) with visible light catalytic activity was synthesized via loading polydopamine-modified bismuth tungstate (PDA/BWO) composite on the RC by blending method. The RCPB/PAN/RCPB sandwich structure membrane was synthesized through combining the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane and RCPB by scraping method, which could reduce aqueous Cr(VI) under visible light. Characterization analysis showed that the tensile strength, elongation at break, roughness and initial water contact angle of RCPB/PAN/RCPB were 32.1 MPa, 5.34%, 0.658 µm and 69.0°, respectively. The photoreduction percent of Cr(VI) by RCPB/PAN/RCPB could reach 99.7% within 120 min with a rate constant of 0.0869 min–1, and the photoreduction percent remained above 84.6% after four cycles. The introduction of PAN further improved the mechanical properties and recycling ability of RCPB. Meanwhile, the capture experiment revealed that the main active substance for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by RCPB/PAN/RCPB was photogenerated e-. This work provides a new idea for the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

In this study, a hydrogel composite adsorbent structure was reported and showed satisfactory adsorption performance. The study uses polylactic acid melt-blown nonwoven fabric to optimize and improve the adsorption performance of the hydrogel. The results show that the nonwoven fabric structure enables the composite material to reach the swelling equilibrium faster than the hydrogel. The adsorption-isotherm model found that the adsorption capacity of composite materials Pb(II) and Ni(II) reached 416.07 and 243.10 mg/g, respectively, and still had high removal efficiency at low pH. The composite material has low cost and can be reused, which solves the problems of difficulty in recovery of the hydrogel adsorbent, low strength, and easy damage, and promotes the industrialization of the hydrogel as an adsorbent.

In this study, a hydrogel adsorbent was successfully synthesized using hydroxyapatite/acrylamide/β-cyclodextrin to adsorb heavy metal ions and dyes in water. In the study, different contents of hydroxyapatite were added to the hydrogel, and then the mechanical properties and adsorption properties of the material were studied. The results show that the compressive strength of hydrogel added with hydroxyapatite increased by 37.1%. According to the adsorption isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity is 300mg/g. In addition, the preparation process of the composite hydrogel is simple, and can be used at a lower pH value, and can be used multiple times. Therefore, the material is of great significance to the treatment of pollutants.

Photodynamic antibacterial composite membranes were engineered by integrating photosensitizer/ antibacterial agent, into the polyurethane adhesive blend and coating the blend on co-electrospinning cellulose acetate(CA)/thermoplastic polyurethanes(TPU) composite membrane support for enhanced antibacterial performance. The central composite design (CCD) method based on the response surface method (RSM) was used for analysis to illustrate the influence of important variables. The optimized parameters of CCD were TPU (wt%) 22.64%, CA (wt%) 18.63, DMAC/acetone volume ratio 0.85, LiCl (wt%) 0.95%, voltage (kV) 23.33kV. Fiber diameter was the key response process output variable. The membranes were characterized by SEM, XPS, and molecular structure analyses. The model had excellent applicability as a tool to realize the average diameter of the CA/TPU bicomponent electrospun membrane. Results showed that after coating, the synergistic effects of photodynamic antibacterial and antibacterial agent performance on the Antibacterial composite membrane were achieved under ordinary daylight irradiation. The sterilization rate of S. aureus and E. coli could achieve excellence at 99.2% and 93.4%, respectively. This method of preparing photodynamic antibacterial composite film provides a new direction for the design of medical antibacterial protective materials.

Visible light response PAN@Ag-Ag2O/Sch (PAN@AS, schwertmannite and polyacrylonitrile abbreviated as Sch and PAN) nanofibers with different mass ratios were synthesized by electrospinning technology and pH-induced precipitation reaction. X-Ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the formation of Ag-Ag2O/Sch heterojunction and Ag-Ag2O nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of Sch. The prepared nanofibers have high oxidative removal performance for As(III) under visible light. In the PAN@AS0.10 system, the total As removal percent can reach 90.96% after 120 min irradiation at pH 4.0. The scavenger experiments confirmed that the main active substances of the PAN@AS0.10 system were h+ and •OH. The high oxidation and removal performance of the PAN@AS0.10 composite for As(III) was attributed to the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and high adsorption capacity of Sch for As under acidic conditions. This research provides a new material for the oxidation and removal of pollutants in water [such as As(III)] and also provides a research basis for the preparation of recyclable photocatalysts.

The As(iii)–O–Ti(iv) surface complexes formed on TiO2, as well as the decreased band gaps of TiO2 with increasing concentrations of As(iii) indicate that the LMCT pathway contributes to the oxidation of As(iii) under alkaline conditions.

The formation of Mn(ii)–O–Bi(iii) complex (LMCT band) decreases the bandgap of Bi2.15WO6 and the photogenerated electrons are transferred from the LMCT band to the CB of Bi2.15WO6, accompanied by the oxidation of Mn(ii).

Our study indicates that phenol mediates the production of the water-soluble OANI in aniline–SPS system. The high scavenging reactivity of phenol towards both PhNH2˙+ and PhNH˙ implies that phenol brings a new pathway for the oxidation of aniline.

A BiFeO3/TiO2 p-n heterojunction photocatalyst with ferroelectric synergistic effect under visible-light irradiation was developed through facile hydrolysis and precipitation by forming nanospheres of TiO2 on BiFeO3 nanocube to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. Analyses of the microstructure, optical properties, and photoelectrochemical performance indicate the formation of a core–shell heterostructure of BiFeO3/TiO2 with excellent energy band matching. The BiFeO3/TiO2 p-n heterojunction has enlarged specific surface area, higher sensitivity to visible-light, and improved separation and transfer efficiency of photoelectron-hole pairs than single TiO2 and BiFeO3. Moreover, the composite exhibits superior photocatalytic degradation performance for methylene blue (MB) and common antibiotic tetracycline (TC) under UV and visible-light irradiation. The MB degradation rate within 180 min reaches 78.4% and 90.4% under UV and visible-light irradiation, respectively. Furthermore, the enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of BiFeO3/TiO2 is explored by photoluminescence (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), transient photocurrent analysis, radical quenching, and band structure characterization.

Oil and organic pollutants removal becomes an efficient solution to dispose of industrial oily and textile dye wastewater. This study proposes a lotus leaf-like bionic nanofibrous membrane with underwater superoleophobic for highly efficient oil-water separation. Papillary structure of the bionic membrane is formed by electrospraying of PVDF and TiO2 solutions on the surface of beaded-structure PVDF/TiO2 membrane. Dopamine is then decorated on the resultant PVDF/TiO2 membrane by in situ polymerization to be with hydrophilic-underwater oleophobic property for highly efficient oil-water separation. This bionic membrane has > 99 % oil-water separation efficiency, and high flux of 1389 ± 67 L m−2 h−1. Its contact angle of underwater petroleum ether and dichlomethane reaches 155° and 152°, respectively. Moreover, it has excellent water transport capacity, photocatalytic property, as well as high separation efficiency and flux even after 5-cycle filtration. This bionic nanofibrous membrane will become a promising candidate in clean production, industrial oil/water separation, water purification and efficient liquid transmission.

Medical product contamination is a serious threat to patients’ health. However, designing medical covers that ensure Janus performance and outstanding abrasion resistance, mechanical performances has remained a great challenge. In this study, a novel Janus nonwoven fabric nonwoven fabric consists of a hydrophilic inner layer of polylactic acid (PLA)/lowmelting polylactic acid (LPLA) and a coated outer layer of hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is successfully fabricated. The subsequent PLA/LPLA-TPU textiles exhibits excellent protective performance of inner absorption. Moreover, the coating improves tensile strength and increases abrasion resistance. A mechanism of mechanical failure is further studied. This kind of nonwoven fabric is suggested to be a promising candidate for medical covers and health supplies.

To simply and effectively enhance the conversion capability of wearable thermoelectric textiles, a two-step in situ method is adopted to fabricate dual-shell photothermoelectric textiles which is made of polypropylene fibers with a photo-thermal layer (PPy) and a thermoelectric layer (PEDOT:Tos). The PPy is tailored to achieve high temperature and photothermoelectric effects. The PPy layer can significantly increase the photothermal conversion efficiencies of as-prepared fabric. The optimized photothermoelectric fabric can improve the generated voltage output from 294.13 to 536.47 μV under the infrared light, and its power density is up to 13.76 nW·m-2. A flexible photothermoelectric strip composed of as-prepared fabric coated with Ag particles and textile substrates with low thermal conductivity shows a voltage output of 2.25, 0.677, and 0.183 mV and a power output of 0.7031, 0.0636, and 0.0049 nW under IR light, sunlight, and on the arm, respectively. The photothermoelectric fabrics display potential as to a new smart wearable device for converting light and electricity.

The use of regular wound dressings commonly brings about excessively retained wound exudate between the dressing and the wound, which is detrimental to the healing. This study manages to control the biofluid around wounds effectively. To begin with, silk fibroin (SF) is extracted from silk. Next, SF and PCL are mixed and electrospun into multiscale hydrophobic nanofibers on the surface of the dopamine (PDA)-treated hydrophilic PVA nanofibrous membranes, thereby forming asymmetric wetability composite membranes with one-way water conduction. Moreover, PVA nanofibrous membranes are immersed in a PDA solution with an attempt to have a greater surface chemical activity and thus demonstrate an 85% greater wicking height and an air permeability being 90 mm/s. A 20% (w/v) SF solution and an 8% (w/v) PCL solution with a feeding rate being 1:3 provide the resulting SF/PCL nanofibrous membranes with greater hydrophobic properties, namely a water contact angle being 112°. In addition, the ultimate asymmetric wetability composite membranes exhibit an excellent wetting gradient, which benefits the directional transmission of moisture. The moisture management test results indicate that when the electrospinning time for PVA and SF/PCL layers is separately 30 min and 5 min, the resulting composite membranes attain the effect of one-way water conduction. In vitro analysis confirmed that the composite membrane produced were non-toxic. This unique wound dressing with one-way water conduction has a giant potential to serve as new type wound dressings for clinical use.

In this study, electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based nanofibrous membranes embedding TiO2 were prepared and used for photocatalytic degradation and oil/water separation. The nanofibrous membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal performance analysis, and oil/water separation analysis. And the degradation of rhodamine B dye was also investigated. Results showed that the fiber diameter and thermal stability of the membranes decreased with the increasing of TiO2. Meanwhile, the fiber surface roughness and specific surface area increased. The analysis of TEM, XRD and FTIR indicated that TiO2 existed in the PVDF membranes. When the TiO2 content was 12 %, the fiber diameter of the membranes was about 110 nm, and the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B dye efficiency was up to 97 %. The reaction rate constant was 0.02057 min−1. At 0.01 MPa vacuum, oil separated from water effectively, which proves that separation can be easily conducted with a low energy cost. Thus, the prepared membranes have a very high application prospect in the purification of reclaimed water and separation of oil and water.

Visible light response PAN@Ag–Ag2O/TiO2 (PAN@AT) nanofibers with different mass ratios between Ag–Ag2O and TiO2 were synthesized via a facile electrospinning technique and pH-induced precipitation reaction. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope analyses manifest the formation of Ag–Ag2O/TiO2 heterojunctions, and Ag–Ag2O/TiO2 nanoparticles are evenly distributed on PAN nanofibers. The fabricated nanofibers show a highly photocatalytic performance toward As(III) oxidation under visible light, and the conversion is 92.1% after 120-min reaction at pH 5.0 in the system of PAN@AT4. Furthermore, conversion of As(III) can retain 88.6% of the original activity after repeating four cycles, indicating the good recyclability of PAN@AT4 nanofibers. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectra analysis further demonstrate that the predominate active species for As(III) oxidation by PAN@AT4 are h+ and ·OH. The enhanced catalytic activity of PAN@AT4 is therefore ascribed to the formation of Ag–Ag2O/TiO2 heterojunctions on PAN surface and the efficient separation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. This study provides a new material to oxidize reducing pollutants [such as As(III)] and also sheds light on the fabrication of recyclable photocatalysts.

Janus nanofibrous membranes with thin fiber diameter, small pore size, and easy-tailored wettability/thickness gradient have attracted considerable attention in the directional water transport field. However, designing textiles that ensure continuous directional water transport and outstanding moisture permeable, breathable performances has remained a great challenge. In this study, a novel polyacrylonitrile/polyvinyl alcohol–thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) sandwich nanofibrous membrane with robust moisture permeable, breathable, and directional water transport performance is successfully fabricated with an innovation strategy combining electrospinning with structure-induced method. A good water vapor transmission rate of 9760 g/m2 d and robust breathability of 103 mm/s are obtained by turning the mass ratio of polyacrylonitrile and polyvinyl alcohol and the opening porous structure of TPU; these values are approximately five times those of commercial membranes. The sandwich fibrous membranes are suggested as promising candidates for various applications, especially in moisture-wicking clothing.

Bio-ceramic hydroxyapatite (HA) coating has been commonly used to repair the bones or as the functionalized surface of bone substitutes due to its excellent biocompatibility, superior osteo-inductivity, and great corrosion resistance. Among many other methods for synthesizing HA coating, coating via the electrochemical deposition has a high degree of crystallinity and purity, which fits the nonlinear, complex, and rugged substrates. Furthermore, HA coating can be adjusted in terms of coating morphology, thickness, and chemical component via changing the parameters, such as electrolyte ion concentration, electrolyte composition, deposition current density, and deposition time, etc. Nevertheless, the properties of electrodeposited HA coating highly pertain to the bubbles generated by water electrolysis on the substrate surface as well as the concentration polarization of electrolyte ions near the cathode during the electrodeposition process. In this study, the critical factors and mechanisms of HA coating using the electrochemical deposition method are comprehensively evaluated, thereby examining the effects of parameter optimization (i.e., current mode, ultrasonic treatment, and postprocessing). Finally, the influences of ion substitution and HA composite coating on the surface structure and properties of the HA-based coatings are also discussed.

Micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) play important roles in the reduction of membrane fouling during membrane separation; however, such improvements are always attributed to the reduced concentration polarization on the surface of membranes and little attention has been paid on the variations of physicochemical properties of the feed caused by MNBs. In this study, the separation efficiencies of the feed containing humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), sodium alginate (SA) or dyes can be improved by MNBs during ultrafiltration, and the normalized fluxes can be maximally increased to 139% and 127% in the dead-end and cross-flow modes, respectively in the treatment of HA solution. We further reveal that the decreased apparent viscosity of the feed in the presence of MNBs is the key factor that enhances the normalized flux during ultrafiltration. This study gives new insight on the importance of MNBs in membrane separation and provides valuable clues for other chemical processes.

In this study, two natural clay minerals were combined with hydrogels to study the influence of natural adsorbents on the adsorption performance of hydrogels. Here, we separately doped bentonite and vermiculite and discussed their mechanical properties and adsorption properties. It was found that the compressive performance of the hydrogel added with clay increased by 21.6% and the swelling performance decreased or increased to varying degrees. Regarding the adsorption performance of hydrogels, it can be seen from the adsorption Langmuir isotherm model that the adsorption capacity of clay-hydrogels is improved to varying degrees (6.6%-15.8%) compared with non-clay-hydrogels, and clay-hydrogels have different degrees of improvement (6.6%-15.8%). The hydrogel has a removal efficiency of more than 95% for low concentrations of heavy-metal ions and dyes. In addition, the clay-hydrogel has low cost and is easy to prepare, and can be recycled many times. Therefore, the material is of great significance for the treatment of pollutants. Drug delivery technology can prevent wound infection and inflammatory reactions and accelerate wound healing and quality. In this paper, we propose preparing a multifunctional medical dressing to meet the various needs of people for dressing. A multi-layered composite nanofiber membrane was constructed using silk fibroin as the substrate, and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) with high adsorption properties were first prepared and then electrosprayed on silk fibroin (SF)/chitosan (CS) microspheres to form MSN-SF/CS microspheres with uniform distribution. Then the MSN-SF/CS microspheres were sprayed on the silk fibroin (SF)/polycaprolactone (PCL)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) unidirectional water-conducting composite nanofiber membrane. The test results showed that the encapsulation rate of bovine serum albumin (BSA) by MSN-SF/CS drug-loaded microspheres was 65.53% and the cumulative release rate in vitro was 54.46%. The results of in vitro experiments also showed its good antibacterial effect and good biocompatibility. To eliminate excess wound exudate and reduce inflammation, the cumulative unidirectional transport capacity (AOTC) of 651.75% was achieved by spraying the microspheres on an SF/PCL- PVA unidirectional water conductive composite membrane. This study could stimulate and promote the use of additional wound healing biomaterials in clinical medicine.

Bi2+xWO6 is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly photocatalyst that shows high reactivity in the oxidation of various contaminants under visible light. However, under alkaline conditions, the reactive oxidative species in the Bi2+xWO6 system are still not clear yet. In this study, it is observed that the oxidation rates of As(III) increase with increasing pH values in the Bi2.15WO6 system. Photoluminescence and the Mott–Schottky analyses confirm that OH− promotes the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs over Bi2.15WO6, thus facilitating the oxidation of As(III). Electron spin resonance spectra analysis and quenching experiments rule out contributions of •OH, O2˙−, 1O2 and superoxo species to As(III) oxidation and indicate that surface –OOH and/or H2O2 are indeed the predominant species under alkaline conditions. The improved production of H2O2 by H-donors such as glucose and phenol, as well as the UV-vis diffuse reflectance and Raman analyses, further confirms the formation of surface –OOH on Bi2.15WO6 under alkaline conditions. In the dark, the significant higher oxidation rate of As(III) by H2O2–Bi2.15WO6 than that by H2O2 alone reveals that surface −OOH, instead of H2O2, plays an important role in As(III) oxidation. This study enriches our understanding of the diversity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the Bi2.15WO6 system and gives new insight into the mechanism involved in the oxidation of As(III) under alkaline conditions.

In this paper, a novel bi-layered Janus fibrous electrospun membrane with robust moisture permeable, breathable and directional water transport properties is successfully fabricated and reported for the first time. This fibrous membrane consists of a thin inner layer of hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and a thick outer layer of super hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The PAN layer is coated with dopamine (PDA) to tailor the wettability. The subsequent TPU–PAN/PDA membrane demonstrates outstanding wettability and thickness gradients, which facilitate directional water transport from the TPU to the PAN/PDA layer and improve the WVT rate to 9065 g m−2 d−1 and the air permeability to 100 mm s−1 (5.0 times higher than a commercial membrane). Furthermore, a plausible mechanism explaining the bi-layered Janus fibrous membrane performance is studied. The fibrous membrane is suggested to be a promising candidate for various applications, especially in moisture-wicking clothing.

Natural pyrites contain high contents of adsorbed and structurally-incorporated arsenic (As), which may in turn affect the oxidation rates of pyrite as well as the transformation and immobilization behaviors of As contaminants. However, the speciation and distribution of As on the oxidation reactivity of pyrites is still not clear yet. In this study, the oxidation reactivity of three different pyrites, namely, pure pyrite (Py-free), As(III)-adsorbed pyrite [Py*-As(III)ad] and As(III)-structurally-incorporated pyrite [Py-As(III)in, including Py-0.02 and Py-0.04] will be compared. In Py-As(III)in, As(III) replaces S(-I) and changes the relative ratio of Fe: S. The XPS results reveal that Fe(III)-S(-II) site densities on the pyrite surface increase with incorporated As, indicating that Py-As(III)in with more As carries more surface defects. The oxidation rates of pyrites are accelerated at pHs 7.0 and 9.0 by both structurally-incorporated and adsorbed As(III), which is more significant in structurally-incorporated As(III). At pH 2.5, structurally-incorporated As(III) promotes the oxidation of pyrite, whereas adsorbed As(III) inhibits its oxidation. The Tafel plots and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis further support that As in Py-As(III)in decreases the charge transfer resistance on the pyrite surface and facilitates electron transfer between dissolved oxygen (DO) and the pyrite surface, thus enhancing the oxidation rates of pyrites. Variations of H2O2 in Py-As(III)in in the full pH range also indicate that As increases the two-electron transfer from pyrite to DO, resulting in the formation of more H2O2. At pH 2.5, the generated OH from H2O2 is the predominant species in pyrite oxidation, and at pHs 7.0 and 9.0, H2O2, Fe(IV) and OH all contribute to pyrite oxidation. Compared with Py-As(III)in, As in Py*-As(III)ad is more readily to be mobilized, with more As(V) being detected at pH 2.5. Subsequent decreases of As(III) and As(V) suggest re-immobilization of the released As via the adsorption or co-precipitation pathways. Solid characterizations further reveal that dissolved or adsorbed As(III) significantly inhibit the development of lepidocrocite, goethite and magnetite, whereas structurally-incorporated As(III) does not, triggering differences in the speciation of secondary Fe minerals. The present study reveals that the speciation and distribution of As(III) significantly affects the chemical and electronic properties of different pyrites, thus affecting the corresponding oxidation reactivity of different pyrites.

Conversion of aqueous arsenite [As(III)] to less toxic arsenate [As(V)] is a critical step for the arsenic pollution remediation. In this study, Ag2O/TiO2 composites synthesized via the pH-induced precipitation method were employed into the photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) under visible light irradiation. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis verified the formation of Ag2O/TiO2 heterostructures. Compared to pure Ag2O and TiO2, the 30% Ag2O/TiO2 composite exhibited much higher photochemical reactivities for the oxidation of As(III) under visible light irradiation. Under the optimal conditions [pH = 4.0, the photocatalyst dosage being 0.3 g L−1 and initial As(III) concentration being 10 mg L−1], the oxidation and removal percent of As(III) was 60.7% and 83.0% after reaction for 120 min, respectively. Moreover, the formation of Ag(0) over the surface of Ag2O by photo-induced electrons contributed to the high stability of Ag2O/TiO2 composite. It was also found that photo-generated holes and superoxide radicals played the predominant roles in the As(III) oxidation. The improved photocatalytic activities were attributed to the formation of the hetero-junctions between Ag2O and TiO2, the strong visible light absorption, and the high separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs resulted from the Schottky barriers at the Ag-Ag2O interface.
