The thermal behavior of 15 natural tourmaline samples has been measured by X-ray powder diffraction from room temperature to ~930 °C. Axial thermal expansion is generally greater along the c crystallographic axis (αc 0.90–1.05 × 10–5/K) than along the a crystallographic axis and the symmetrically equivalent b axis (αa 0.47–0.60 × 10–5/K). Ferro-bearing samples show lower expansion along a than in other tourmalines. In povondraite the thermal expansion along the c axis is higher than in other tourmalines, whereas along a it is lower [αa = 0.31(2) and αc = 1.49(3) × 10–5/K]. Volume expansion in the tourmaline-supergroup minerals is relatively low compared with other silicates such as pyroxenes and amphiboles. Volume also exhibits a relatively narrow range of thermal expansion coefficients (1.90–2.05 × 10–5/K) among the supergroup members. An interpretation for the small changes in thermal expansion in a compositionally heterogeneous group like tourmaline is that all members, except povondraite, share a framework of dominantly ZAlO6 polyhedra that limit thermal expansion. Povondraite, with a framework dominated by ZFe3+O6 polyhedra, displays thermal expansion that is different from other members of the group. Unit-cell dimensions of tourmalines having significant Fe2+ deviate from linearity above 400 °C on plots against temperature (T); along with the resulting substantial reduction in unit-cell volume, these effects are likely the result of deprotonation/oxidation processes. Lithium-rich and Fe2+-free tourmalines deviate similarly at T > 600 °C. In Li- and Fe2+-free tourmalines, no such deviation is observed up to the highest temperatures of our experiments. It is not clear whether this is due to cation order-disorder over Y and Z sites that occurs during the highest temperature measurements, a phenomenon that is apparently inhibited (at least in the short term) in Li-free/Mg-rich samples. If so, this must occur at a relatively rapid rate, as no difference in unit-cell values was detected at 800 °C after heating in both one- and 12-h experiments on Na-rich rossmanite.

Five povondraite crystals from San Francisco Mine, Villa Tunari, Bolivia, have been structurally and chemically characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. For the first time, this characterisation is accompanied by Mössbauer spectroscopic and single-crystal infrared spectroscopic data, which show the exclusive presence of Fe3+ at both the octahedrally-coordinated Y and Z sites as well as slight disorder of (OH) and O over the O(1) and O(3) sites.The data obtained along with those for earlier-studied bosiite and oxy-dravite oxy-tourmalines show a complete substitution series described by the reaction YFe3+3 + ZMg + ZFe3+4 ↔ YAl2 + YMg + ZAl5 (i.e. Fe3+Al–1) with variation of the structural parameters dominated by Fe3+ (or Al). Povondraite is the tourmaline member having the largest unit-cell parameters due to the larger size of Fe3+ relative to other trivalent cations (V > Cr > Al). In the tourmaline-supergroup minerals, the a and c unit-cell parameters vary from ~15.60 Å to ~16.25 Å and ~7.00 Å to ~7.50 Å, respectively. Their values increase with increasing Fe3+ or decreasing Al. End-member compositions related to the smallest and largest a and c parameters are, respectively, NaAl3Al6(Si3B3O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH) (synthetic tourmaline) and NaFe3+3(Fe3+4Mg2)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O (povondraite).

Transplanted human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hPSC-CMs) improve ventricular performance when delivered acutely post-myocardial infarction but are ineffective in chronic myocardial infarction/heart failure. 2’-deoxy-ATP (dATP) activates cardiac myosin and potently increases contractility. Here we engineered hPSC-CMs to overexpress ribonucleotide reductase, the enzyme controlling dATP production. In vivo, dATP-producing CMs formed new myocardium that transferred dATP to host cardiomyocytes via gap junctions, increasing their dATP levels. Strikingly, when transplanted into chronically infarcted hearts, dATP-producing grafts increased left ventricular function, whereas heart failure worsened with wild-type grafts or vehicle injections. dATP-donor cells recipients had greater voluntary exercise, improved cardiac metabolism, reduced pulmonary congestion and pathological cardiac hypertrophy, and improved survival. This combination of remuscularization plus enhanced host contractility offers a novel approach to treating the chronically failing heart.One Sentence SummaryTransplanting gene-edited dATP-donor cardiomyocytes in chronically infarcted heart restores their cardiac function, improving both exercise tolerance and survival.

Introduction: Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is commonly used during surgery of the spine and spinal cord for early surveillance of iatrogenic injury to the central and peripheral nervous system. However, for infants and young children under 3 years of age, the use of IONM is challenging due to incomplete central and peripheral myelination. Case Presentation: We report a case of a T4-T6 dermal sinus tract (DST) that was resected on day of life 23, with the successful use of IONM. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the youngest reported case of the use of IONM in the surgical correction of a DST in a neonatal patient. This case demonstrates the potential efficacy of IONM in neonatal spine surgery and the techniques used to adapt the technology to an immature nervous system.

Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. With the most recent Gaia data release the number of sources with complete 6D phase space information (position and velocity) has increased to well over 33 million stars, while stellar astrophysical parameters are provided for more than 470 million sources, in addition to the identification of over 11 million variable stars. Using the astrophysical parameters and variability classifications provided in Gaia DR3, we select various stellar populations to explore and identify non-axisymmetric features in the disc of the Milky Way in both configuration and velocity space. Using more about 580 thousand sources identified as hot OB stars, together with 988 known open clusters younger than 100 million years, we map the spiral structure associated with star formation 4-5 kpc from the Sun. We select over 2800 Classical Cepheids younger than 200 million years, which show spiral features extending as far as 10 kpc from the Sun in the outer disc. We also identify more than 8.7 million sources on the red giant branch (RGB), of which 5.7 million have line-of-sight velocities, allowing the velocity field of the Milky Way to be mapped as far as 8 kpc from the Sun, including the inner disc. The spiral structure revealed by the young populations is consistent with recent results using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and source lists based on near infrared photometry, showing the Local (Orion) arm to be at least 8 kpc long, and an outer arm consistent with what is seen in HI surveys, which seems to be a continuation of the Perseus arm into the third quadrant. Meanwhile, the subset of RGB stars with velocities clearly reveals the large scale kinematic signature of the bar in the inner disc, as well as evidence of streaming motions in the outer disc that might be associated with spiral arms or bar resonances. In 2014, Steele, Lea, and Flood presented SplitMix, an object-oriented pseudorandom number generator (prng) that is quite fast (9 64-bit arithmetic/logical operations per 64 bits generated) and also splittable . A conventional prng object provides a generate method that returns one pseudorandom value and updates the state of the prng; a splittable prng object also has a second operation, split , that replaces the original prng object with two (seemingly) independent prng objects, by creating and returning a new such object and updating the state of the original object. Splittable prng objects make it easy to organize the use of pseudorandom numbers in multithreaded programs structured using fork-join parallelism. This overall strategy still appears to be sound, but the specific arithmetic calculation used for generate in the SplitMix algorithm has some detectable weaknesses, and the period of any one generator is limited to 2 64 . Here we present the LXM family of prng algorithms. The idea is an old one: combine the outputs of two independent prng algorithms, then (optionally) feed the result to a mixing function. An LXM algorithm uses a linear congruential subgenerator and an F 2 -linear subgenerator; the examples studied in this paper use a linear congruential generator (LCG) of period 2 16 , 2 32 , 2 64 , or 2 128 with one of the multipliers recommended by L’Ecuyer or by Steele and Vigna, and an F 2 -linear xor-based generator (XBG) of the xoshiro family or xoroshiro family as described by Blackman and Vigna. For mixing functions we study the MurmurHash3 finalizer function; variants by David Stafford, Doug Lea, and degski; and the null (identity) mixing function. Like SplitMix, LXM provides both a generate operation and a split operation. Also like SplitMix, LXM requires no locking or other synchronization (other than the usual memory fence after instance initialization), and is suitable for use with simd instruction sets because it has no branches or loops. We analyze the period and equidistribution properties of LXM generators, and present the results of thorough testing of specific members of this family, using the TestU01 and PractRand test suites, not only on single instances of the algorithm but also for collections of instances, used in parallel, ranging in size from 2 to 2 24 . Single instances of LXM that include a strong mixing function appear to have no major weaknesses, and LXM is significantly more robust than SplitMix against accidental correlation in a multithreaded setting. We believe that LXM, like SplitMix, is suitable for “everyday” scientific and machine-learning applications (but not cryptographic applications), especially when concurrent threads or distributed processes are involved.

As human beings, we are bound by time. It is essential for daily functioning, and yet our ability to keep track of time is influenced by a myriad of factors (Block & Zakay, 1997, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 4[2], 184-197). First and foremost, time estimation has been found to depend on whether participants estimate the time prospectively or retrospectively (Hicks et al., 1976, The American Journal of Psychology, 89[4], 719-730). However, there is a paucity of research investigating differences between these two conditions in tasks over two minutes (Tobin et al., 2010, PLOS ONE, 5[2], Article e9271). Moreover, estimates have also been shown to be influenced by cognitive load. We thus investigated participants' ability to keep track of time during a visual and memory search task and manipulated its difficulty and duration. Two hundred and ninety-two participants performed the task for 8 or 58 minutes. Participants in the prospective time judgment condition were forewarned of an impending time estimate, whereas participants in the retrospective condition were not. Cognitive load was manipulated and assessed by altering the task's difficulty. The results revealed a higher overestimation of time in the prospective condition compared with the retrospective condition. However, this was found in the 8-minute task only. Overall, participants significantly overestimated the duration of the 8-minute task and underestimated the 58-minute task. Finally, cognitive load had no effect on participants' time estimates. Thus, the well-known cross-over interaction between cognitive load and estimation paradigm (Block et al., 2010, Acta Psychologica, 134[3], 330-343) did not extend to a longer duration in this experiment.

Congruential pseudorandom number generators rely on good multipliers, that is, integers that have good performance with respect to the spectral test. We provide lists of multipliers with a good lattice structure up to dimension eight and up to lag eight for generators with typical power-of-two moduli, analyzing in detail multipliers close to the square root of the modulus, whose product can be computed quickly.

This work explores a continuum-mechanical model for a body simultaneously undergoing finite deformation and surface growth/resorption. This is accomplished by defining the kinematics as well as the set of material points that constitute the domain of a physical body at a given time in terms of an evolving reference configuration. The implications of spatial and temporal discretization are discussed, and an extension of the Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian finite element method is proposed to enforce the resulting balance laws on the grown/resorbed body in two spatial dimensions. Representative numerical examples are presented to highlight the predictive capabilities of the model and the numerical properties of the proposed solution method.

Strategic and tactical capacity planning are critical decisions faced by hospitals. While these problems have received significant attention, current queueing-based approaches do not address realistic healthcare constraints such as blocking, transient arrivals, transient capacity assignments, and surge capacities. A queueing methodology is developed to extend the analysis of these constructs. The methodology developed is generic for hospitals responding to demand surges during epidemics and pandemics such as the recent COVID-19, and in other application areas in manufacturing, supply chain management, and logistics. The medical staff and patient chairs in the emergency room, beds in the operating theater, ICU, and medical/surgical care units are used in patient treatment at a hospital. They can be considered as servers in a system, where capacity and operational policies affect performance measures such as patient throughput. The methodology develops the probabilities from which system performance measures can be estimated for a serial queueing network with blocking. Transient analysis is employed, due to the time varying nature of the patient arrival patterns. The methodology has the capability to analyze different interventions such as increasing and decreasing capacities, and ambulance diversion. In order to handle typical hospital sized problems that result in thousands of ordinary differential equations defining the system probabilities, a transient version of Kanban queueing network decomposition is developed along with procedures for dealing with the discontinuities that arise at capacity changes. Verification/validation is presented along with several scenarios that illustrate the potential application of this methodology in emergency hospital management.

To examine the effects of chemical composition on thermal expansion in the pyroxene mineral group, X-ray diffraction data have been collected from room temperature to ~925 °C on a chemically diverse group of 13 pyroxenes including four orthorhombic and nine monoclinic samples. Additionally, resulting unit-cell volumes computed from the XRD data have proven to be good tests for a large number of thermal expansion models; the physical model by Kroll and coworkers and the empirical one by Fei have been found to be especially useful. Modeling also has allowed the connection of present data, collected at temperatures above 25 °C, to the volume data of other workers for much lower temperatures, well below 0 °C, and also extrapolation of values for volume and thermal expansion well beyond the measurement range.We have found for orthopyroxenes that Fe2+-Mg2+ substitution has little effect on thermal expansion coefficients for volume. For clinopyroxenes, however, greater thermal expansion occurs in Ca2+-(diopside, augite, hedenbergite, johannsenite) than in Li+-(spodumene) or Na+-bearing members (jadeite, aegirine, kosmochlor). Present data support the observation that differences in volume thermal expansion relate primarily to differences in expansion along the b crystallographic axis. This apparently is due to the greater concentration of M1 polyhedra along the b crystallographic axis, where expansion differences can be related to the shared O1-O1 polyhedral edge and inter-oxygen repulsion that is made easier by divalent, as opposed to trivalent, cation occupancy of the M1 crystallographic site.

The crystal structures of 19 samples from the nepheline (NaAlSiO4; Ne)–kalsilite (KAlSiO4; Ks) series, previously prepared via ion-exchange, were examined using synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HRPXRD) data and Rietveld structure refinements. Parent materials for the three series include a natural Monte Somma nepheline (series-1), synthetic Na nepheline (series-2), and high-Si synthetic nepheline (series-3), having excess Si mole percentages of 5.2, 1.7, and 12.5%, respectively. Three different structure-types were found to occur among the samples examined: nepheline (P63), tetrakalsilite (P63), and kalsilite (both P63 and P31c intergrowth). Trikalsilite was not observed in this study. Vacancies (☐) at the K site as well as Ca and K atoms at the Na1 site play an important role in the crystal-chemical behavior of nepheline solid solutions. Vacancies cause an elongation in the average [9] distance in nepheline. When K atoms enter the Na1 site in nepheline, the average [7] distance increases linearly and is parallel to the average [9] distance in kalsilite and the grand mean of such distances in trikalsilite and tetrakalsilite. Before K atoms enter the Na1 site, the average [7] distance is constant because of the full occupancy of the Na1 site with Na atoms. Ca atoms at the Na1 site in the Monte Somma sample-1 cause a contraction in the [7] distance. In Na-rich nepheline samples, Na atoms in the large channels occupy a Na(K) site that is off the 63 axis and close to the usual K site. In natural nepheline samples, the K site in most cases contains K atoms and ☐, and the Na1 site is filled mainly with Na, minor Ca, and K atoms in K-rich samples. Nepheline from Monte Somma (sample-1) contains weak satellite reflections that are also present in some other kalsilite samples. Average distances indicate a high degree of Al-Si disorder in nepheline but increasing Al-Si order in tetrakalsilite and kalsilite. Increasing the amount of K atoms beyond the ideal composition of K0.25Na0.75[AlSiO4] causes expansion in multiple structural parameters because of the larger size of K+ relative to Na+.

Background: Up to 50% of patients with proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) will develop the postthrombotic syndrome characterized by limb swelling and discomfort, hyperpigmentation, skin ulcers, and impaired quality of life. Although catheter-based interventions enabling the restoration of blood flow (RBF) have demonstrated little benefit on postthrombotic syndrome, the impact on the acuity of the thrombus and mechanisms underlying this finding remain obscure. In experimental and clinical studies, we examined whether RBF has a restricted time window for improving DVT resolution. Methods: First, experimental stasis DVT was generated in C57/BL6 mice (n=291) by inferior vena cava ligation. To promote RBF, mice underwent mechanical deligation with or without intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator administered 2 days after deligation. RBF was assessed over time by ultrasonography and intravital microscopy. Resected thrombosed inferior vena cava specimens underwent thrombus and vein wall histological and gene expression assays. Next, in a clinical study, we conducted a post hoc analysis of the ATTRACT (Acute Venous Thrombosis: Thrombus Removal with Adjunctive Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis) pharmacomechanical catheter-directed thrombolysis (PCDT) trial (NCT00790335) to assess the effects of PCDT on Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study quality-of-life and Villalta scores for specific symptom-onset-to-randomization timeframes. Results: Mice that developed RBF by day 4, but not later, exhibited reduced day 8 thrombus burden parameters and reduced day 8 vein wall fibrosis and inflammation, compared with controls. In mice without RBF, recombinant tissue plasminogen activator administered at day 4, but not later, reduced day 8 thrombus burden and vein wall fibrosis. It is notable that, in mice already exhibiting RBF by day 4, recombinant tissue plasminogen activator administration did not further reduce thrombus burden or vein wall fibrosis. In the ATTRACT trial, patients receiving PCDT in an intermediate symptom-onset-to-randomization timeframe of 4 to 8 days demonstrated maximal benefits in Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study quality-of-life and Villalta scores (between-group difference=8.41 and 1.68, respectively, P 8 days. Conclusions: Taken together, these data illustrate that, within a restricted therapeutic window, RBF improves DVT resolution, and PCDT may improve clinical outcomes. Further studies are warranted to examine the value of time-restricted RBF strategies to reduce postthrombotic syndrome in patients with DVT.

Georeferenced digital trace data offer unprecedented flexibility in migration estimation. Because of their high temporal granularity, many migration estimates can be generated from the same data set by changing the definition parameters. Yet despite the growing application of digital trace data to migration research, strategies for taking advantage of their temporal granularity remain largely underdeveloped. In this paper, we provide a general framework for converting digital trace data into estimates of migration transitions and for systematically analyzing their variation along a quasi-continuous time scale, analogous to a survival function. From migration theory, we develop two simple hypotheses regarding how we expect our estimated migration transition functions to behave. We then test our hypotheses on simulated data and empirical data from three platforms in two internal migration contexts: geotagged Tweets and Gowalla check-ins in the United States, and cell-phone call detail records in Senegal. Our results demonstrate the need for evaluating the internal consistency of migration estimates derived from digital trace data before using them in substantive research. At the same time, however, common patterns across our three empirical data sets point to an emergent research agenda using digital trace data to study the specific functional relationship between estimates of migration and time and how this relationship varies by geography and population characteristics.

Despite advances in clinical practice, local anaesthetic systemic toxicity continues to occur with the therapeutic use of local anaesthesia. Patterns of presentation have evolved over recent years due in part to the increasing use of ultrasound which has been demonstrated to reduce risk. Onset of toxicity is increasingly delayed, a greater proportion of clinical reports are secondary to fascial plane blocks, and cases are increasing where non-anaesthetist providers are involved. The evolving clinical context presents a challenge for diagnosis and requires education of all physicians, nurses and allied health professionals about these changing patterns and risks. This review discusses: mechanisms; prevention; diagnosis; and treatment of local anaesthetic systemic toxicity. The local anaesthetic and dose used, site of injection and block conduct and technique are all important determinants of local anaesthetic systemic toxicity, as are various patient factors. Risk mitigation is discussed including the care of at-risk groups, such as: those at the extremes of age; patients with cardiac, hepatic and specific metabolic diseases; and those who are pregnant. Advances in the changing clinical landscape with novel applications and settings for the use of local anaesthesia are also described. Finally, we signpost future directions to potentially improve the management of local anaesthetic systemic toxicity. The utility of local anaesthetics remains unquestionable in clinical practice, and thus maximising the safe and appropriate use of these drugs should translate to improvements in patient care.

Subjective confidence reports are used in numerous research paradigms to examine the extent to which participants are aware of their performance in a task. By examining the discrepancy between objective performance and subjective confidence ratings, inferences can be made about the conditions in which participants have greater explicit knowledge of the representations and processes used to complete a task. In the current study, we examined the effects of prior knowledge on subjective assessments of performance using a categorisation task wherein lists of features that defined exemplars shared latent feature associations on the basis of prior knowledge or had no prior associations. Using 2 methods for computing confidence, we demonstrate the strengths and limitations of these measures of subjective awareness. Whereas our findings replicated the effect of prior knowledge on learning, our results challenge the role of explicit and implicit knowledge suggested by previous research using a similar paradigm. In vivo nucleic expression technologies using DNA or mRNA offer several advantages for recombinant gene expression. Their inherent ability to generate natively expressed recombinant proteins and antigens allows these technologies to mimic foreign gene expression without infection. Furthermore, foreign nucleic acid fragments have an inherent ability to act as natural immune adjuvants and stimulate innate pathogen- and DNA damage-associated receptors that are responsible for activating pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) and DNA damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) signalling pathways. This makes nucleic-acid-based expression technologies attractive for a wide range of vaccine and oncolytic immunotherapeutic uses. Recently, RNA vaccines have demonstrated their efficacy in generating strong humoral and cellular immune responses for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). DNA vaccines, which are more stable and easier to manufacture, generate similar immune responses to RNA, but typically exhibit lower immunogenicity. Here we report on a novel method of constructing self-amplifying DNA expression vectors that have the potential to amplify and enhance gene/antigen expression at a cellular level by increasing per cell gene copy numbers, boost genomic adjuvating effects and mitigate through replication many of the problems faced by non-replicating vectors such as degradation, methylation and gene silencing. These vectors employ a viral origin rolling circle replication cycle in mammalian host cells that amplifies the vector and gene of interest (GOI) copy number, maintaining themselves as nuclear episomes. We show that these vectors maintain persistently elevated GOI expression levels at the cellular level and induce morphological cellular alterations synonymous with increased cellular stress.

Pathological sodium-water retention or edema/congestion is a primary cause of heart failure (HF) decompensation, clinical symptoms, hospitalization, reduced quality of life, and premature mortality. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) based therapies reduce hospitalization due to HF, improve functional status, quality, and duration of life in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) independently of their glycemic status. The pathophysiologic mechanisms and molecular pathways responsible for the benefits of SGLT-2i in HFrEF remain inconclusive, but SGLT-2i may help HFrEF by normalizing salt-water homeostasis to prevent clinical edema/congestion. In HFrEF, edema and congestion are related to compromised cardiac function. Edema and congestion are further aggravated by renal and pulmonary abnormalities. Treatment of HFrEF patients with SGLT-2i enhances natriuresis/diuresis, improves cardiac function, and reduces natriuretic peptide plasma levels. In this review, we summarize current clinical research studies related to outcomes of SGLT-2i treatment in HFrEF with a specific focus on their contribution to relieving or preventing edema and congestion, slowing HF progression, and decreasing the rate of rehospitalization and cardiovascular mortality.

Postoperative complications are common and may be under-recognised. It has been suggested that enhanced postoperative care in the recovery room may reduce in-hospital complications in moderate- and high-risk surgical patients. We investigated the feasibility of providing advanced recovery room care for 12-18 h postoperatively in the post-anaesthesia care unit. The primary hypothesis was that a clinical trial of advanced recovery room care was feasible. The secondary hypothesis was that this model may have a sustained impact on postoperative in-hospital and post-discharge events. This was a multicentre, prospective, feasibility before-and-after trial of moderate-risk patients (predicted 30-day mortality of 1-4%) undergoing non-cardiac surgery and who were scheduled for postoperative ward care. Patients were managed using defined assessment checklists and goals of care in an advanced recovery room care setting in the immediate postoperative period. This utilised existing post-anaesthesia care unit infrastructure and staffing, but extended care until the morning of the first postoperative day. The advanced recovery room care trial was deemed feasible, as defined by the recruitment and per protocol management of > 120 patients. However, in a specialised cancer centre, recruitment was slow due to low rates of eligibility according to narrow inclusion criteria. At a rural site, advanced recovery room care could not be commenced due to logistical issues in establishing a new model of care. A definitive randomised controlled trial of advanced recovery room care appears feasible and, based on the indicative data on outcomes, we believe this is warranted.

Passive radiative cooling (RC) enables the cooling of objects below ambient temperature during daytime without consuming energy, promising to be a game changer in terms of energy savings and CO reduction. However, so far most RC surfaces are obtained by energy-intensive nanofabrication processes or make use of unsustainable materials. These limitations are overcome by developing cellulose films with unprecedentedly low absorption of solar irradiance and strong mid-infrared (mid-IR) emittance. In particular, a cellulose-derivative (cellulose acetate) is exploited to produce porous scattering films of two different thicknesses, L ≈ 30 µm (thin) and L ≈ 300 µm (thick), making them adaptable to above and below-ambient cooling applications. The thin and thick films absorb only (Formula presented.) of the solar irradiance, which represents a net cooling power gain of at least 17 W m, compared to state-of-the-art cellulose-based radiative-cooling materials. Field tests show that the films can reach up to ≈5 °C below ambient temperature, when solar absorption and conductive/convective losses are minimized. Under dryer conditions (water column = 1 mm), it is estimated that the films can reach average minimum temperatures of ≈7–8 °C below the ambient. In the Baoule language, several sentences express the same fact. Classification of sentences is a task of Natural Language Processing (NLP). Deep learning has turned out to be a kind of method that has a significant effect in this area. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based system for sentence classification. We introduce into this system a word representation model to capture semantic characteristics by encoding the frequency of terms and segmenting the sentence into clauses. We present the third data release of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, GDR3. The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The GDR3 catalogue contains the same source list, celestial positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and broad band photometry in the G, G$_{BP}$, and G$_{RP}$ pass-bands already present in the Early Third Data Release. Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) provides a wealth of new data products for the astronomical community to exploit, including astrophysical parameters for a half billion stars. In this work we demonstrate the high quality of these data products and illustrate their use in different astrophysical contexts. We query the astrophysical parameter tables along with other tables in Gaia DR3 to derive the samples of the stars of interest. We validate our results by using the Gaia catalogue itself and by comparison with external data. We have produced six homogeneous samples of stars with high quality astrophysical parameters across the HR diagram for the community to exploit. We first focus on three samples that span a large parameter space: young massive disk stars (~3M), FGKM spectral type stars (~3M), and UCDs (~20K). We provide these sources along with additional information (either a flag or complementary parameters) as tables that are made available in the Gaia archive. We furthermore identify 15740 bone fide carbon stars, 5863 solar-analogues, and provide the first homogeneous set of stellar parameters of the Spectro Photometric Standard Stars. We use a subset of the OBA sample to illustrate its usefulness to analyse the Milky Way rotation curve. We then use the properties of the FGKM stars to analyse known exoplanet systems. We also analyse the ages of some unseen UCD-companions to the FGKM stars. Context. The third Gaia data release provides photometric time series covering 34 months for about 10 million stars. For many of those stars,a characterisation in Fourier space and their variability classification are also provided. This paper focuses on intermediate- to high-mass (IHM)main sequence pulsators (M ≥ 1.3 M ) of spectral types O, B, A, or F, known as β Cep, slowly pulsating B (SPB), δ Sct, and γ Dor stars. These stars are often multi-periodic and display low amplitudes, making them challenging targets to analyse with sparse time series.Aims. We investigate the extent to which the sparse Gaia DR3 data can be used to detect OBAF-type pulsators and discriminate them from other types of variables. We aim to probe the empirical instability strips and compare them with theoretical predictions. The most populated variability class is that of the δ Sct variables. For these stars, we aim to confirm their empirical period-luminosity (PL) relation, and verify the relation between their oscillation amplitude and rotation.Methods. All datasets used in this analysis are part of the Gaia DR3 data release. The photometric time series were used to perform a Fourier analysis, while the global astrophysical parameters necessary for the empirical instability strips were taken from the Gaia DR3 gspphot tables, and the v sin i data were taken from the Gaia DR3 esphs tables. The δ Sct PL relation was derived using the same photometric parallax method as the one recently used to establish the PL relation for classical Cepheids using Gaia data.Results. We show that for nearby OBAF-type pulsators, the Gaia DR3 data are precise and accurate enough to pinpoint them in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. We find empirical instability strips covering broader regions than theoretically predicted. In particular, our study reveals the presence of fast rotating gravity-mode pulsators outside the strips, as well as the co-existence of rotationally modulated variables inside the strips as reported before in the literature. We derive an extensive period–luminosity relation for δ Sct stars and provide evidence that the relation features different regimes depending on the oscillation period. We demonstrate how stellar rotation attenuates the amplitude of the dominant oscillation mode of δ Sct stars.Conclusions. The Gaia DR3 time-series photometry already allows for the detection of the dominant (non-)radial oscillation mode in about 100000 intermediate- and high-mass dwarfs across the entire sky. This detection capability will increase as the time series becomes longer, allowing the additional delivery of frequencies and amplitudes of secondary pulsation modes.

The Gaia DR3 Catalogue contains for the first time about eight hundred thousand solutions with either orbital elements or trend parameters for astrometric, spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries, and combinations of them. This paper aims to illustrate the huge potential of this large non-single star catalogue. Using the orbital solutions together with models of the binaries, a catalogue of tens of thousands of stellar masses, or lower limits, partly together with consistent flux ratios, has been built. Properties concerning the completeness of the binary catalogues are discussed, statistical features of the orbital elements are explained and a comparison with other catalogues is performed. Illustrative applications are proposed for binaries across the H-R diagram. The binarity is studied in the RGB/AGB and a search for genuine SB1 among long-period variables is performed. The discovery of new EL CVn systems illustrates the potential of combining variability and binarity catalogues. Potential compact object companions are presented, mainly white dwarf companions or double degenerates, but one candidate neutron star is also presented. Towards the bottom of the main sequence, the orbits of previously-suspected binary ultracool dwarfs are determined and new candidate binaries are discovered. The long awaited contribution of Gaia to the analysis of the substellar regime shows the brown dwarf desert around solar-type stars using true, rather than minimum, masses, and provides new important constraints on the occurrence rates of substellar companions to M dwarfs. Several dozen new exoplanets are proposed, including two with validated orbital solutions and one super-Jupiter orbiting a white dwarf, all being candidates requiring confirmation. The washing of layered double hydroxides (LDH) material is mostly purposed to discard the unreacted products after the reaction has been completed. However, this study demonstrated that the washing stage can also be targeted to optimise the electrochemical performance of LDH by using an appropriate solvent. Solvents, namely, ethanol, acetone, and an ethanol–acetone solution (2:1) were used for the washing of LDH and the impacts thereof on the structural, physical, chemical, morphological, and electrochemical properties were investigated. Using Williamson–Hall analysis, we observed modifications on the crystalline domain. The specific surface area and pore parameters for all the samples were also differently affected. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements displayed evident changes in the basic sites. The electrochemical performances of samples were analysed. The sample washed with the ethanol–acetone solution exhibited a specific capacitance of 1807.26 Fg−1 at 10 mVs−1, which is higher than that of other samples as well as low internal resistance compared to its counterpart. This demonstrates that the use of an appropriate solvent during the washing stage of LDH affects the electrochemical properties.

The IMPROVE study describes a large perioperative quality improvement project with reporting of both compliance with improvement activities and patient outcomes. It highlights the importance of such projects, as well as the challenges in implementing change and proving benefit. Challenges identified include the importance of effective training in practice change, selection of trial design and relevant quality measures, and how the context of quality improvement initiatives may influence outcomes. Quality improvement programmes of this nature, despite the difficulties with implementation and trial design, remain a high priority because of their positive influence on improving clinical practice.

We describe a simd technique for drawing values from multiple discrete distributions, such as sampling from the random variables of a mixture model, that avoids computing a complete table of partial sums of the relative probabilities. A table of alternate (“butterfly-patterned”) form is faster to compute, making better use of coalesced memory accesses; from this table, complete partial sums are computed on the fly during a binary search. Measurements using cuda 7.5 on an nvidia Titan Black gpu show that this technique makes an entire machine-learning application that uses a Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model with 1,024 topics about 13% faster (when using single-precision floating-point data) or about 35% faster (when using double-precision floating-point data) than doing a straightforward matrix transposition after using coalesced accesses.

Background Excessive, plasmin-mediated fibrinolysis augments bleeding and contributes to death in some patients. Current therapies for fibrinolytic bleeding are limited by modest efficacy, low potency, and off-target effects. Objectives To determine whether an antibody directed against unique loop structures of the plasmin protease domain may have enhanced specificity and potency for blocking plasmin activity, fibrinolysis, and experimental hemorrhage. Methods The binding specificity, affinity, protease cross-reactivity and antifibrinolytic properties of a monoclonal plasmin inhibitor antibody (Pi) were examined and compared with those of epsilon aminocaproic acid (EACA), which is a clinically used fibrinolysis inhibitor. Results Pi specifically recognized loop 5 of the protease domain, and did not bind to other serine proteases or nine other non-primate plasminogens. Pi was ~7 logs more potent in neutralizing plasmin cleavage of small-molecule substrates and >3 logs more potent in quenching fibrinolysis than EACA. Pi was similarly effective in blocking catalysis of a small-molecule substrate as α2 -antiplasmin, which is the most potent covalent inhibitor of plasmin, and was a more potent fibrinolysis inhibitor. Fab or chimerized Fab fragments of Pi were equivalently effective. In vivo, in a humanized model of fibrinolytic surgical bleeding, Pi significantly reduced bleeding to a greater extent than a clinical dose of EACA. Conclusions A mAb directed against unique loop sequences in the protease domain is a highly specific, potent, competitive plasmin inhibitor that significantly reduces experimental surgical bleeding in vivo.

Following abdominal surgery, the provision of postoperative analgesia with local anaesthetic infusion through both transmuscular quadratus lumborum block and pre-peritoneal catheter have been described. This study compared these two methods of postoperative analgesia following laparotomy. Eighty-two patients 18-85 years of age scheduled to undergo elective surgery were randomly allocated to receive either transmuscular quadratus lumborum block or pre-peritoneal catheter block. In the transmuscular quadratus lumborum group, an 18-gauge Tuohy needle was passed through the quadratus lumborum muscle under ultrasound guidance to reach its anterior aspect. A 20-ml bolus of ropivacaine 0.375% was administered and catheters placed bilaterally. In the pre-peritoneal catheter group, 20 ml of ropivacaine 0.375% was infiltrated at each of three subcutaneous sub-fascial levels, and pre-peritoneal plane catheters were placed bilaterally. Both groups received an infusion of ropivacaine 0.2% at 5 ml.h-1 , continued up to 48 h along with a multimodal analgesic regime that included regular paracetamol and patient-controlled analgesia with fentanyl. The primary end-point was postoperative pain score on coughing, assessed using a numerical rating score (0-10). Secondary outcomes were pain score at rest, fentanyl usage until 48 h post-operation, satisfaction scores and costs. There was no treatment difference between the two groups for pain score on coughing (p = 0.24). In the transmuscular quadratus lumborum group, there was a reduction in numerical rating score at rest (p = 0.036) and satisfaction scores on days 1 and 30 (p = 0.004, p = 0.006, respectively), but fentanyl usage was similar. In the transmuscular quadratus lumborum group, the highest and lowest blocks observed in the recovery area were T4 and L1, respectively. The transmuscular quadratus lumborum technique cost 574.64 Australian dollars more per patient than the pre-peritoneal catheter technique.

This work examines the change in liquidus temperature of the salt used in the Mk-IV electrorefiner at the Idaho National Laboratory during processing campaigns of sodium-bonded driver fuels from Experimental Breeder Reactor II and the Fast Flux Test Facility reactor. Modeling and Simulation Tool for Electrochemical Recycling Systems (MASTERS), an INL proprietary pyroprocessing flowsheet simulation tool, was used to simulate the processing campaigns and determine the resulting composition changes of the Mark-IV electrorefiner salt. Surrogate salt samples simulating the Mk-IV electrorefiner salt during the fuel processing campaigns were prepared, and the thermal properties were measured via differential scanning calorimetry. Results from this study indicate that after processing approximately 2,150 kg of uranium metal from used fuel, the liquidus temperature of the molten salt exceeds 520 °C, which is a significant increase from 352 °C (the melting temperature of eutectic LiCl KCl). It was also found that the liquidus temperature is strongly dependent on the amount of NaCl accumulating in the Mk-IV electrorefiner salt. Thus, the assessment of the liquidus temperature during the subsequent fuel processing campaigns can be simplified by considering the ternary LiCl KCl NaCl system only.

Vibrations of dry bridge stay cables at relatively high wind velocities are of concern for a cable-stayed bridge. One approach to mitigate the vibrations is to modify the cross-sectional geometry of the cable and thereby its aerodynamic characteristics. Recent biological studies reveal that the cactus with a grooved cross-section can survive in high winds thanks to a less abrupt drag coefficient reduction with Reynolds number and a smaller fluctuating side force compared to a basic circular shape. This has inspired the attempt to take advantage of this natural evolution in the aerodynamic design of the protective sheath for bridge stay cables. This paper describes a series of wind tunnel tests on a cactus-shaped rigid cylinder consisting of eight ridges, eight troughs and with the groove depth-to-diameter ratio of 4%. It evaluates the static global aerodynamic forces under different yaw angles, angles of attack and segment rotations. The aerodynamic performance of the cactus cylinder is compared to a round cylinder from previous wind tunnel tests. The study aims to deepen the understanding of the particular groove effects in alleviating the wind excitation, and aid in the development of an alternative, aerodynamically efficient design of the protective sheath for stay cables.

Brodifacoum (BDF) is a potent, long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide that can cause fatal poisoning in humans. The chemical structure of BDF includes 2 chiral carbons, resulting in 2 pairs of diastereomers, BDF-cis (R/S and S/R) and BDF-trans (R/R and S/S). However, the relative potency of these molecules is not known. The purpose of this study was to compare the in vitro and in vivo toxic effects of the 2 BDF diastereomer pairs. In adult Sprague-Dawley rats BDF-cis was significantly more toxic than BDF-trans (LD50 values of 219 versus 316 μg/kg, respectively) while racemic BDF had intermediate potency (266 μg/kg). In adult New Zealand white rabbits, BDF-cis had a longer half-life than BDF-trans which could contribute to its observed increased toxicity. Lastly, BDF-cis (10 μM), but not BDF-trans, damaged cultured SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells by attenuating mitochondrial reductive capacity. Taken together, these data suggest that different toxic manifestations of BDF poisoning in mammals could be attributed, in part, to differences in relative enantiomer concentrations present in racemic formulations of this commercially-available toxicant.
