Infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) has been used to study the interface between poly(vinyl-N-octadecylcarbamate-co-vinyl acetate) (PVNODC) and polystyrene (PS) films during mechanical contact. The films were contacted using a deformable semispherical poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) lens that can be easily adapted to incorporate friction and adhesion force measurements. A strong methyl symmetric peak and Fermi resonance band associated with the alkyl side chains of PVNODC are observed in the SFG spectrum. This suggests that the interface structure during mechanical contact is more ordered than the structure observed for PS/PVNODC bilayer films annealed above the melting and glass transition temperatures of PVNODC and PS. Complementary contact mechanics measurements reveal a small adhesion hysteresis supporting our hypothesis that the interface structure during mechanical contact is not significantly different from the structure of the air interfaces before contact.

Measurements of the inclusive cross-sections forK 0 and Λ production in hadronic decays of the Z are presented together with measurements of two-particle correlations within pairs of Λ andK 0. The results are compared with predictions from the hadronization models Jetset, based on string fragmentation, and Herwig, based on cluster decays. TheK 0 spectrum is found to be harder than predicted by both models, while the Λ spectrum is softer than predicted. The correlation measurements are all reproduced well by Jetset, while Herwig misses some of the qualitative features and overestimates the size of the $$\Lambda \bar \Lambda $$ correlation. Finally, the possibility of Bose-Einstein correlation in theK 0 K 0 system is discussed.

Summary Background Previous trials of antiplatelet therapy for the prevention of venous thromboembolism have individually been inconclusive, but a meta-analysis of their results indicated reductions in the risks of deep-vein thrombosis and of pulmonary embolism in various high-risk groups. The aim of this large randomised placebo-controlled trial was to confirm or refute these apparent benefits. Methods During 1992–1998, 148 hospitals in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden and the UK randomised 13 356 patients undergoing surgery for hip fracture, and 22 hospitals in New Zealand randomised a further 4088 patients undergoing elective arthroplasty. Study treatment was 160 mg daily aspirin or placebo, started preoperatively and continued for 35 days. Patients received any other thromboprophylaxis thought necessary. Follow-up was of mortality and of in-hospital morbidity up to day 35. Findings Among the patients with hip fracture, allocation to aspirin produced proportional reductions in pulmonary embolism of 43% (95% CI 18–60; p=0·002) and in symptomatic deep-vein thrombosis of 29% (3–48; p=0·03). Pulmonary embolism or deep-vein thrombosis was confirmed in 105 (1·6%) of 6679 patients assigned aspirin compared with 165 (2·5%) of 6677 assigned placebo, which represents an absolute reduction of 9 (SE 2) per 1000 and a proportional reduction of 36% (19–50; p=0·0003). Similar proportional effects were seen in all major subgroups, including patients receiving subcutaneous heparin. Aspirin prevented 4 (1) fatal pulmonary emboli per 1000 patients (18 aspirin-group vs 43 placebo-group deaths), representing a proportional reduction of 58% (27–76; p=0·002), with no apparent effect on deaths from any other vascular cause (hazard ratio 1·04 [95% CI 0·86–1·26]) or non-vascular cause (1·01 [0·84–1·23]). Deaths due to bleeding were few (13 aspirin vs 15 placebo), but there was an excess of 6 (3) postoperative transfused bleeding episodes per 1000 patients assigned aspirin (p=0·04). Among electivearthroplasty patients, rates of venous thromboembolism were lower, but the proportional effects of aspirin were compatible with those among patients with hip fracture.

A hegemon-by-committee, or a group of nations playing the role of a dominant financial power, is necessary for the international financial system to withstand crises arising from drastic shifts of funds among national currencies, accompanied by large movements of exchange rates. These wide fluctuations in exchange rates and subsequent financial transactions can trigger a collapse of prices in dollar-denominated financial assets in US financial markets, thus undermining the global economy. With no single nation apparently capable of playing the hegemon, international cooperation is imperative. An important theme of the paper is that allocative efficiency may not be compatible with adequate financial stability efficiency. JEL Codes: F31, G28, PSL Quarterly Review, V. 49, N. 197 (1996)

- Abstract
A key challenge in Grid Computing is the ability to create reliable and scalable virtual organisations (VOs) which operate in an open, dynamic and competitive environment. In response, in the CONOISE-G project, we are developing an infrastructure to support robust and resilient virtual organisation formation and operation. Specifically, CONOISE-G provides mechanisms to assure effective operation of agent-based VOs in the face of disruptive and potentially malicious entities in dynamic, open and competitive environments. In this paper, we describe the architecture of the CONOISE-G system, and provide details of its implementation.

Editor—Barton is right to draw atttention to the inappropriate use of legal aid, for bad cases with poor lawyers.1 However, although it is true that after the event insurance can deliver a service more likely to take up only the stronger cases, there will still be a need for careful appropriate legal aid. I work as an expert witness for both defence instructed cases and claimant cases. I have no axe to grind and no real interest in who is footing the bill. What I do know is that carefully prepared cases can succeed and that this takes enormous time and effort on the part of the solicitors involved. Claimants start at a huge disadvantage, with no records, poor medical knowledge, and no legal knowledge. If state funding is to be used to secure justice one has to accept the need for the disadvantaged to receive speedy, good, and appropriate advice. Both privately funded insurance cases and well screened publicly funded cases can and do coexist—ideally those who can afford insurance to cover their legal fees should use them and those who can't should remain able to use legal aid.

- Abstract
The agricultural regions of England appear in LANDSAT IMAGES as extended mosaic patterns of small fields. Individual fields, especially in the hillier north and west of the country may be as small as a few pixels and thus it is the field patterns themselves which make up the texture of the image. We have been concerned with the problem of mapping the average orientation of fields (a secondary indicator for geomorphology) and the distribution of field size. Two approaches are being used: (i) Holographic derivation of local autocorrelation information. (ii) Digital extraction of statistical parameters. For our test area in East Cornwall we have compared optically and digitally derived autocorrelation functions. We have also studied the local stationarity of the first and second order statistical measures which is crucial when evaluating statistical classification strategies.

musculoskeletal system - Abstract
Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumors of fertile women and the most common indication for hysterectomy. Despite the high prevalence, significant health problems, and huge economical impact on the healthcare system, relatively little is understood about the etiology and pathophysiology of uterine leiomyoma (1). Consequently, medical treatments are still limited (2). The role of the growth factors as ultimate mediators of the steroids hormone is evident in the modulation of the cell proliferation and the morphological cells appearance (3). Activin-A and myostatin are growth factors belonging to TGF-β super family expressed and acting in myometrial (4,5) and leiomyoma cells (6) We aimed to explore the functions of activin and myostatin in human myometrial and leiomyoma cells. First we tested both Smad and non-Smad signaling pathways by western blot. We found that activin-A and myostatin can activate only Smad signaling pathway in both myometrial and leiomyoma cells. Next we explored the effect on cell proliferation and on fibrotic phenotype. We found that activin-A and myostatin are able to suppress primary myometrial cell proliferation but they cannot alter the proliferation of leiomyoma cells. In the next step, we found that activin-A can significantly increase fibronectin expression in leiomyoma cells. Those above results suggest that activin-A and myostatin may express antiproliferative and/or fibrotic effects depending on the cell types by activating Smad signaling pathway., Italian Journal of Anatomy and Embryology, Vol 118, No 2 (Supplement) 2013

Communication between users in shared editors takes place in a deprived environment - distributed users find it difficult to communicate. While many solutions to the problems this causes have been suggested this paper presents a novel one. It describes one possible use of haptics as a channel for communication between users. User's telepointers are considered as haptic avatars and interactions such as haptically pushing and pulling each other are afforded. The use of homing forces to locate other users is also discussed, as is a proximity sensation based on viscosity. Evaluation of this system is currently underway.
