Abstract

The B(E2; Ii ! If ) values for transitions in 71Ga and 73Ga were deduced from a Coulomb excitation experiment at the safe energy of 2.95 MeV/nucleon using post-accelerated beams of 71,73Ga at the REX-ISOLDE on-line isotope mass separator facility. The emitted gamma rays were detected by the MINIBALL-detector array and B(E2; Ii->If ) values were obtained from the yields normalized to the known strength of the 2+ -> 0+ transition in the 120Sn target. The comparison of these new results with the data of less neutron-rich gallium isotopes shows a shift of the E2 collectivity towards lower excitation energy when adding neutrons beyond N = 40. This supports conclusions from previous studies of the gallium isotopes which indicated a structural change in this isotopical chain between N = 40 and N = 42. Combined with recent measurements from collinear laser spectroscopy showing a 1/2- spin and parity for the ground state, the extracted results revealed evidence for a 1/2-; 3/2- doublet near the ground state in 73 31Ga42 differing by at most 0.8 keV. Abstract

The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a U-238 beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17h and I=21.5h, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single-particle and collective motions, a much improved description of the experimental results can be obtained. In addition, new results on the structure of Fr-208, Ra-211 and Ac-216 are reported.

Abstract

Within the RISING (Rare ISotope INvestigations @ GSI) Collabora-tion at GSI, g factor measurements have been performed on isomeric states in neutron-rich isotopes approaching 132 Sn and in the neutron deficient Pb-region (the g-RISING campaign). We present the experimental technique and some typical aspects related to such studies on relativistic beams selected with the FRS fragment separator. First results are presented for the (19/2+ ) 4.5 µs isomeric state in 127 Sn, which has been produced by means of fission of a relativistic 238 U beam on the one hand, and by the fragmentation of a relativistic 136 Xe beam on the other hand. Spin-alignment has been observed in both reactions. It was the first time that spin-alignment has been established in a relativistic fission reaction.

Abstract

The $5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $9/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and $11/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states in $^{209}\mathrm{Po}$ were populated in the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{209}\mathrm{At}$ and their lifetimes measured using the electronic $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ fast timing technique. The lifetime of the $9/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state is measured for first time. The lifetime of the $5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is measured to be shorter than the value adopted in the literature while the lifetime of the $11/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ state agrees well with the previous measurement. In order to get deeper insight into the structure of the states, a shell-model calculation was carried out adopting a microscopic effective interaction derived from the realistic CD-Bonn potential. The comparison between theoretical and experimental data for the low-lying negative-parity states of $^{209}\mathrm{Po}$ supports the reliability of the predicted wave functions, which are found to be dominated by the coupling of a neutron hole to the yrast states of $^{210}\mathrm{Po}$. However, it also points to the important role played by minor wave-function components in describing the reduced electromagnetic strengths, suggesting the need of additional configuration mixing for achieving a better quantitative agreement.
