Biological invasions are one of the major threats to the ecosystem structure and functioning. After the initial introduction, frequently mediated by human activities, alien species can overcome different biogeographical and ecological barriers and determine severe impacts on native biodiversity and socio-economic activities. The Italian peninsula is located at the intersection of large trade routes within the Mediterranean Sea. Such position, along with the intense commercial activity and the high population density of the Italian coast, are considered important drivers of alien species in Italian marine and transitional ecosystems. The Italian peninsula, however, is also one of the regions with the highest native species richness within the Mediterranean Sea and, therefore, it is crucial to account for both alien and native species diversity when estimating the impact of biological invasion. Yet, such comprehensive information is frequently scattered across several biodiversity information systems and databases. Here, two datasets with alien and native species records in Italian marine and transitional waters are described. These datasets, created for the LifeWatch Italy case study on alien species, are the result of a large-scale collaboration involving experts working across the whole range of taxonomic diversity. The marine dataset includes a total of 12,219 records belonging to 3,772 species gathered from 91 investigated sites and seven EUNIS habitats. The dataset on transitional waters biodiversity includes 3,838 records belonging to 2,019 species found in 23 locations and four EUNIS habitats. Alien species were recorded in both marine and transitional waters, accounting respectively for 140 and 171 biological records belonging to 59 and 97 species. These occurrence data can be used for further research studies or management purposes, including the evaluation of the invasion risk and the formulation of alien species control and management plans. Furthermore, these compiled datasets can be used as input data for the Biotope vulnerability case study of LifeWatch ERIC, which offers a number of ICT services for the calculation of the incidence and of the impact of alien species on European biotopes.

Background The reproductive cycle of the recently described sponge Tethya meloni was investigated for a period of 15 months (September 2018 – November 2019) in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Southern Italy) and was compared with data previously collected for the other two sympatric species of the same genus known for Mediterranean Sea, T. citrina and T. aurantium. Results T. meloni is a gonochoric species with a sex ratio strongly shifted towards females. Asexual budding was a seasonal process, limited to few specimens. In a specimen collected in September 2018 both oocytes and buds occurred, suggesting that in T. meloni the sexual and asexual phases may coexist both at the population and individual levels. Conclusions The data obtained from this research compared with the available literature confirm the high temporal variability of the reproductive cycles in the Mediterranean species of Tethya, but with common general characteristics. In sexual reproduction, the oocyte production period lasts several months, with a peak between summer and autumn while spermatogenesis, shorter but with greater reproductive effort, follows the onset of oogenesis. The asexual reproduction phase of T. meloni, on the other hand, occurs in a short period and seems to have less importance in the overall reproductive process.

Lack of detailed knowledge on ecological niche, life cycles, spatial distribution, reproductive biology and space use strongly affects the selection of useful tools and measures in the conservation of threatened marine species. Especially for sedentary and slow species, behaviour and movement capacities are supposed to be the most important functional traits. Indeed, behavioural variability concerning available space and the close presence of individuals is considered a crucial trait for the population dynamics assessments, especially when disturbances of various causes are present in the environment. The present study aimed to investigate the site fidelity and degree of movement of Hippocampus guttulatus, an emblematic and threatened Mediterranean seahorse species. With this aim, a number of seahorses were tagged and monitored throughout two years within a limited area of the lagoon of Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Southern Italy). The studied individuals were initially morphometrically measured for size, sex and life-cycle stage and subsequently monitored through repeated four-month surveys each year. Obtained results indicated high site fidelity regardless of habitat type. Movement pattern was in line with the data on congeneric species, although values were slightly higher. The analyses showed differences in movement degree among different sexes and life-cycle stages and indicated greater mobility of adult females compared to males and juveniles. The investigated parameters showed a great variability suggesting that even small-scale environmental factors can influence the species mobility. Finally, a change in the population structure has been observed, with the loss of large individuals in 2016 and reduced recruitment in 2017. These findings indicated the possible presence of stressors that could lead to the alteration of the seahorse population at Mar Piccolo of Taranto.

The S. spinulosa (Leukhart, 1849) worm reef of Torre Mileto is a site of extraordinary beauty, proposed as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) to be protected by law. Recent studies highlight both the ability of this structure to increase the biodiversity of the adjacent sector of coast, and to act as a barrier to defend from coastal erosion as well as a temporary reservoir of sediments, lengthening the cycle of sand in the beach.This work shows the results of image analysis techniques on bioconstruction samples integrated with seasonal and annual monitoring. A multidisciplinary approach involving sedimentological, ecological and biological analysis techniques offers an overall view of the evolutionary state of the environment and provides quantitative data which are necessary for the protection and monitoring of this site.

Seahorses are small sedentary fish considered flagship species of the conservation efforts. During the last decades, worldwide decline of local populations led to the inclusion of all seahorse species on the IUCN Red List and Appendix II of CITES. Due to the threatening status, improving knowledge of their dietary composition, while using a noninvasive approach, might be of great importance as it could help to understand the way the environment is exploited. In the present study, we used an amplicon-based HTS (High Throughput Sequencing) approach to investigate the diet of wild long-snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus. The results indicated that the applied approach is adequate for the characterization of diet in wild specimens. Indeed, the applied approach permitted identification of Amphipoda, Decapoda, Isopoda and Calanoida, present in most of the seahorse samples, while less common prey taxa were Gastropoda and Polyplacophora. As only a small amount of starting faecal material is needed and the sampling procedure is neither invasive nor lethal, DNA metabarcoding could be useful in the investigation of threatened seahorse diet in the wild and could help inform management and conservation actions.

Coralligenous bioconstructions are one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive and biodiverse marine habitats. This research aimed to provide a preliminary characterization of macrobenthic coralligenous assemblages at four sites located in the Marine National Park of Karaburun-Sazan in Albania. We analyzed images obtained from videos recorded along underwater transects at two different depths. Over a total of 61 taxa (3 Rhodophyta, 2 Ochrophyta, 6 Chlorophyta, 30 Porifera, 5 Cnidaria, 3 Mollusca, 2 Annelida, 1 Arthropoda, 4 Bryozoa, 4 Echinodermata, and 1 Chordata), 53 were identified at the species level using taxonomic and semi-quantitative video image analysis, thus allowing an update to the Albanian coralligenous species list with 34 new species. This study revealed differences in species richness and composition among the investigated sites and between depths, with a high number of taxa exclusive to one site and a few taxa common to all sites. Seven taxa are protected by law, among which are the echinoderm Centrostephanus longispinus, included in the Bern (Annex II) and Barcelona (Annex II) Conventions and Habitat Directive (92/43 EEC) (Annex IV), and the sponges Spongia (Spongia) officinalis and S. (S.) lamella, included in Annex III of the Bern Convention. Only the alga Caulerpa cylindracea can be considered an alien species. Although preliminary, the present research indicated the occurrence of rich and diversified macrobenthic assemblages in the study area. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that video analysis can provide a biodiversity baseline within MPAs, where traditional methods involving invasive sampling cannot be applied, particularly in areas such as the Albanian coasts, where anthropogenic impacts have been historically significant. Finally, this work provides a first estimate of the structural biodiversity in a recently established marine protected area, thus representing the basis for subsequent monitoring.

Illegal wildlife trade is considered one of the most serious threats to biodiversity worldwide, along with habitat loss/degradation and overfishing of wild stocks. Seahorses are considered at high risk as these fish represent an important component of traditional Chinese medicine but are also sold as curios and ornamental fish. On a worldwide level, illegal trade is controlled by numerous laws and regulations, but it seems to continue by assuming more dynamic routes. In the Mediterranean Sea, Hippocampus guttulatus formed one of the largest populations at Mar Piccolo di Taranto in South-Eastern Italy. During the routine monitoring of this population in 2016, a dramatic density decrease was observed. By using questionnaires and long-term datasets, the present study determined possible causes of this decline by investigating habitat changes, temperature trends and the existence of seahorse trafficking while also examining abundance trends during the last decade. The results indicated a sharp density decline starting from 2015, co-occurring with the period of high temperatures, while habitats remained almost constant. However, interviews with main stakeholders described both illegal and legal fishing activities as the main drivers for the declining seahorse density. Indeed, at one of the studied sites, which was under strict military control, seahorse abundance started to decline only after the intensification of fishing pressure in the basin. The study suggests that Mar Piccolo di Taranto could be one of the sources for international seahorse trade, thus highlighting the need for more intense and effective actions to prevent and combat illegal poaching, while threatened populations are requiring continuous and close monitoring. Due to unfavorable socio-economic conditions, a viable and thriving seahorse population at Mar Piccolo di Taranto could contribute to the revitalization of the coastal economy and the development of environmental awareness.

The aim of this study was to provide further knowledge of the ecological, spatial, and temporal distribution and life‐cycle traits of the sympatric seahorse species Hippocampus hippocampus and Hippocampus guttulatus. From 2011 to 2014, data were collected from 20 sites along the Apulian coast (Southern Italy) in order to cover a wide range of coastal marine, open water, and lagoon sites, from the surface to a depth of 48 metres. Seahorses were found at seven of the 20 sites investigated. Both species displayed temporal persistence, patchy distribution, and a high spatial demographic heterogeneity. This study revealed a smaller maximum size and size at maturity of H. guttulatus than has been reported elsewhere. Although it is possible that environmental factors are influencing the size of these animals, there may be genetic explanations, especially for lagoon populations. Despite the fragmented distribution and often low abundance found along the Apulian coast, some seahorse populations appear to be locally persistent and stable over time, suggesting that there is a need for appropriate location‐specific conservation strategies. Not just maintaining but increasing the area of artificial substrates, which enhance habitat complexity and provide holdfasts, could represent a possible approach to help conserve marine littoral biodiversity and to protect endangered species in lagoons.

Due to their life-cycle traits, the two European seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus and H. hippocampus), as with other congeneric species, are particularly sensitive to the effects of anthropogenic activities and habitat changes. However, information on the ecological distribution of these two species is scattered, patchy, and mainly focused on small-scale studies. In this paper, we followed an international standard protocol for systematic reviews (the PRISMA protocol) to provide a detailed assessment of the two species’ geographical distribution in relation to the environmental characteristics. According to the 134 analyzed studies, Hippocampus guttulatus is more common in confined areas, while H. hippocampus is found in marine shelf waters. With several interspecific differences, seagrasses were the most used holdfasts of both species. The EUNIS codes (European nature information system) referring to a specific and unique habitat were discussed as a potential tool for defining the ecological distribution of the two species. The obtained results and their future implementation could help plan conservation actions.

Confined marine environments are particularly susceptible to climate change and anthropic pressures. Indeed, the long-term monitoring of benthic assemblages in these environments allows us to understand the direction of changes over time. The demosponge Geodia cydonium is a suitable study case, since it is widely represented in many Mediterranean environments, while being a long-living and important habitat-forming species. Here, we report the results of a descriptive study on temporal and spatial variations of this demosponge in three semi-enclosed environments along the Italian coast: Marsala Lagoon, Porto Cesareo Bay, and Mar Piccolo of Taranto. At Marsala and Porto Cesareo, the study compares the present data with those reported by the literature at the end of the 1990s. Caused by the modification of its preferential habitats, the data indicated the loss and a remarkable regression of this species at Porto Cesareo and Marsala, respectively. In addition, we hypothesized that the increase in severe weather phenomena in the small Bay of Porto Cesareo recorded during the last 20 years may have had a marked impact on water mass, thus affecting the sponge assemblages. At Taranto, despite a remarkable environmental degradation, G. cydonium has appeared stable and persistent in the last 45 years, thus representing one of the richest and most well-preserved populations in the Mediterranean Sea.

Sedentary polychaete Sabellaria spinulosa (Leukhart, 1849) is a suspension feeder that builds tubes by cementing together terrigenous particles. Under a set of environmental conditions, S. spinulosa can form reefs (consisting of hundreds or thousands of worm tubes) that can vary greatly in thickness, size and patchiness. The more-developed reefs form in areas with a large and continuous supply of sand, turbulent water, nutrient availability and rocky seafloor. Recently, for the first time in the Mediterranean area, a large reef of S. spinulosa has been discovered along the northern Gargano coast at Torre Mileto (Adriatic Sea, southern Italy). In this paper, we will detail the main sedimentological data of this worm reef. In order to evaluate the kind of terrigenous particles involved in the worm tube constructions, detailed grain-size and petrographic analyses were carried out on both reef and soft-sediment substrate samples. It is demonstrated that S. spinulosa selects sands on the basis of their grain size and shape, and not their composition. It is also shown that some seasonal variations of these parameters are the result of the interplay between reef growth and degradation periods mainly related to physical processes. In particular, the degradation stages seem to be induced mainly by storm wave action, while the reef growth is the result of the complex interaction between ecological and physical processes.

Skin filaments are present on the heads of several Hippocampus species. Their clipping is a useful, non-lethal technique for marking individuals and sampling tissue. Little is known about the consequences of clipping on behaviour and details of regeneration. We present the results of a study on the effects of filament clipping on activity patterns and the regeneration of this structure at the macroscopic and microscopic level in Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1801 from the Gulf of Taranto (Apulia, Ionian Sea). Twelve individuals of both sexes underwent filament clipping, and their behaviour sequences (expressed as percent of total time spent swimming, resting, food searching, and swinging) were monitored for 10 wk in water tanks. In the first week, individuals spent significantly more time food searching and swimming compared to controls, whereas in the following weeks, no differences between groups were observed. Regeneration was observed in 12 other individuals reclipped after 3, 5, and 7 wk. Sections of paraffin-embedded filaments were stained with Mallory’s trichrome, alcian blue pH 2.5, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), and PAS with diastase. Epidermal cells and basal membranes were the first to recover fully. Basal epidermal cells were filled with glycogen. In the dermis, the arrangement of bundles of fibres surrounded by melanocytes took longer to reconstitute. After 10 wk, the filaments grew to about 36.7% of their original length, whereas at the microscopic level, the tissues recovered fully. It is concluded that filament clipping does not significantly affect the general behavioural patterns of H. guttulatus, and regeneration at the microscopic level is fully accomplished.

Sponge assemblages associated with coralligenous outcrops were studied with the aim of describing and comparing their composition, morphological features and distribution at different depths (shallow vs. deep) along the Apulian coasts. In addition, image analysis enabled the description of the main features of coralligenous outcrops and the detection of structuring species. The paper provides a significant contribution in terms of supplying new taxa of sponges associated to coralligenous assemblages and emphasising the importance of invertebrates in realising calcareous constructions. Most of the new finding came from deep sites, thus underlining the need to improve taxonomic studies on coralligenous communities at greater depths. A total of 153 taxa of sponges were recorded: 4 Calcarea, 6 Homoscleromorpha and 143 Demospongiae. Two species, Clathria (Microciona) macrochela and Thoosa armata, are new records for the Italian sponge fauna, with C. (M.) macrochela representing a new record for the whole Mediterranean. New findings for the Ionian and Adriatic Seas totalled 25 and 8 species, respectively. Thirty-nine species are endemic for the Mediterranean. Data analyses clustered sites into two groups, separated according to the depth. Deep sites, characterised by animal dominance, exhibit a heterogeneous substrate texture richer in cavities than the shallow and homogeneous algal ones. Differences in sponge species composition also correspond to differences in the distribution of sponge growth forms, with the insinuating cryptic species more abundant in deeper communities. Ten of 15 sponge species included in national and international wildlife protection laws and policy have been detected in the present study.

The sponge fauna colonizing rhodolith beds from Ustica Island marine protected area was studied. Moreover, an inventory of the sponge species present along the island’s coasts was carried out for the first time. Analysis of rhodoliths trapped in nets used by local fishermen at two sites and data obtained from underwater video images were used to identify 25 sponge taxa, 22 of them at species level. The classes Demospongiae and Homoscleromorpha were present with 24 and 1 species, respectively. Most of the specimens were small-sized and represented by thick crusts or short erect branches. Few specimens were insinuating or excavating. Furthermore, qualitative sampling was performed on Ustica’s coralligenous formations, photophilous hard substrates and in marine caves, and the results obtained were added to the literature data. The overall checklist of sponges from Ustica encompassed 97 taxa, 90 named at species level, subdivided into 6 taxa of Calcarea, 3 of Homoscleromorpha and 88 of Demospongiae. Eleven of the species were endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, mainly concentrated on rhodoliths and in marine caves. This research adds a fundamental element to the knowledge of invertebrates associated with rhodoliths, and updates the checklist of sponges colonizing Ustica’s waters, facilitating its future monitoring. En este trabajo se estudió la fauna de poríferos que coloniza los fondos de rodolitos del área marina protegida de la isla de Ustica. Además, se creó por primera vez un catálogo de las especies de esponjas que se encuentran en el litoral de la isla. El análisis de los rodolitos enredados en las redes de pescadores locales en dos sitios y de los datos obtenidos de las imágenes de video submarino permitieron reconocer 25 taxones de poríferos, 22 de los cuales se identificaron a nivel de espe­cies. Las clases Demospongiae y Homoscleromorpha estuvieron presentes con 24 y 1 especies respectivamente. La mayoría de los especímenes eran de tamaño pequeño y representados por costras gruesas o ramas cortas y erectas. Pocos especímenes eran esponjas insinuantes o excavadoras. Además, se llevaron a cabo muestreos cualitativos en formaciones de coralígeno, en sustratos duros fotofilos y en cuevas marinas de la isla de Ustica, y se añadieron los resultados obtenidos a los datos de la literatura. El inventario total de las esponjas de Ustica incluye 97 taxones, 90 nombrados a nivel de especies, divididos en: 6 taxones de Calcarea, 3 de Homoscleromorpha, 88 de Demospongiae. Once de las especies son endémicas del mar Mediter­ráneo, concentradas principalmente en fondos de rodolitos y dentro de cuevas marinas. Esta investigación añade un aspecto fundamental al conocimiento de la distribución de los poríferos, en particular los asociados con los rodolitos, y actualiza la lista de esponjas que colonizan los fondos de Ustica, proporcionando herramientas para su monitoreo futuro.

Here we describe two new species of deep-sea sponges collected during the exploration of Cold-Water Coral (CWC) banks discovered in the Nora and Coda Cavallo canyons (north-eastern and south coast of Sardinia respectively). Poecillastra tavianii n. sp. differs from the other congeneric species mainly for the dicho- and mesodichotriaenes, never observed in the genus, and the abundance and variety of spirasters. Hymedesmia (Hymedesmia) quadridentata n. sp. is characterized by the presence of two types of chelae. In particular, the unguiferate chelae (round shaft and four teeth at both extremities) represent a peculiar character of the species. Our contribution increases the number of sponge fauna associated to the best known Central Mediterranean CWC habitats to 98 improving the still scant knowledge on the biodiversity of the Mediterranean CWC habitats.

Understanding of the spatial distribution and habitat use in different stages of a life cycle represents the essential aspect of threatened species management and conservation. In the present paper, the spatial and temporal patterns of habitat use in juvenile and adult life stages of the long-snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Apulia—Italy) (40°28′N, 17°16′W) were examined. From October 2012 to January 2014, monthly visual censuses were conducted in six coastal habitats of a focal area (Buffoluto site). Of a total of 317 individuals of the long-snouted seahorse that were sighted, 148 were juveniles, 82 adult females and 87 adult males. Our results showed significant differences in the habitat use between adult and juvenile life stages of H. guttulatus. Adult individuals were mainly concentrated within Cladophora prolifera beds and the wood poles of a mussel farm at 2–4 m of depth, while juvenile individuals were mainly present in shallower water (0.4–1 m) on artificial hard substrates covered by a brown algae turf. Assessing and describing the habitat use within different life stages of H. guttulatus represent a useful tool to support species conservation by protecting the habitats it uses.

Sponges are an important constituent of filter-feeder benthic communities, characterized by high ecological plasticity and abundance. Free bacteria constitute an important quota of their diet, making them excellent candidates in aquaculture microbial bioremediation, where bacteria can be a serious problem. Although there are studies on this topic, certain promising species are still under investigation. Here we report applied microbiological research on the filtering activity of Sarcotragus spinosulus on two different concentrations of the pathogenic bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus in a laboratory experiment. To evaluate the effects of the filtration on the surrounding nutrient load, the release of ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate was also measured. The results obtained showed the efficient filtration capability of S. spinosulus as able to reduce the Vibrio load with a maximum retention efficiency of 99.72% and 99.35% at higher and lower Vibrio concentrations, respectively, and remarkable values of clearance rates (average maximum value 45.0 ± 4.1 mL h−1 g DW−1) at the highest Vibrio concentration tested. The nutrient release measured showed low values for each considered nutrient category at less than 1 mg L−1 for ammonium and phosphate and less than 5 mg L−1 for nitrate. The filtering activity and nutrient release by S. spinosulus suggest that this species represents a promising candidate in microbial bioremediation, showing an efficient capability in removing V. parahaemolyticus from seawater with a contribution to the nutrient load.

In this paper, we report data from the first year of rearing of a set of filter feeder bioremediator organisms: macrobenthic invertebrates (sabellid polychaetes and sponges), coupled with macroalgae, realized in a mariculture fish farm. This innovative integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system was realized at a preindustrial level in the Gulf of Taranto (southern Italy, northern Ionian Sea), within the framework of the EU Remedia Life project. Long lines containing different collector typologies were placed around the fish breeding cages. Vertical collectors were utilized for both polychaetes and sponges, whilst macroalgae were cultivated in horizontal collectors. Data on the growth and mortality of the target species after the first year of rearing and cultivation are given together with their biomass estimation. Polychaete biomass was obtained from natural settlement on ropes previously hung in the system, while sponges and macroalgae were derived from explants and/or inocules inserted in the collectors. The description of the successional pattern occurring on collectors used for settling until reaching a &ldquo, stable&rdquo, point is also described, with indications of additional filter feeder macroinvertebrates other than polychaetes and sponges that are easily obtainable and useful in the system as bioremediators as well. The results demonstrate an easy, natural obtaining of large biomass of sabellid polychaetes settling especially from about a 4 to 10 m depth. Sponges and macroalgae need to be periodically cleaned from the fouling covering. The macroalgae cycle was different from that of invertebrates and requires the cultivation of two different species with about a 6-month cycle for each one. The present study represents one of the first attempts at IMTA in the Mediterranean area where invertebrates and macroalgae are co-cultured in an inshore fish farm. Possible utilization of the produced biomass is also suggested.

Marine pollution from aquaculture wastewater is a widespread and increasing ecological problem. Algae, with their ability to remove surplus nutrients from wastewater, are a good tool for achieving more sustainable aquaculture. In this study, the capability of different biomasses of Chaetomorpha linum and Cladophora prolifera for the bioremediation of nutrient-rich (ammonium, nitrate and phosphate) seawater was compared. The results suggest that 10 g L−1C. linum is an excellent candidate for aquaculture wastewater bioremediation. However, the bioremediation efficiency of C. linum was significantly affected by seasonality, with the greatest performance in nutrient removal exhibited by algae harvested in summer. C. linum harvested in winter and acclimated to lab conditions for two months, significantly improved the removal efficiency of both ammonium and nitrate, while worsening that of phosphate. Irrespective of season and acclimation, the simultaneous presence of ammonium and nitrate in seawater strongly inhibited nitrate removal. Thus, we propose the use of a two-step system, tested at the laboratory scale, in which nutrient-enriched seawater can pass through two different algal ponds. C. linum was able to achieve almost complete removal of ammonium in 24 h in the first step, while the second step improved both nitrate and phosphate removal efficiency. The two-step system is an effective innovation for the use of algae in bioremediation of aquaculture wastewaters.

We present a preliminary model of environmental suitability for the conservation of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta in the Southern Adriatic and Northern Ionian Sea. Data from stranding, bycatch, nesting and home range from telemetries from 1994 to 2013 were considered. Environmental data from nesting sites were used to compute a MaxEnt model of nesting suitability. Data from each set were then combined into a map subdivided into 5 km × 5 km cells to assess the environmental suitability of each cell. Preliminary data suggest that the model is useful to locate the areas of maximum suitability to concentrate efforts of monitoring and conservation.

Pollutants in marine coastal areas are mainly a consequence of anthropogenic inputs, and microorganisms often play a major role in determining the extent of this pollution. Thus, practical and eco-friendly techniques are urgently required in order to control or minimise the pathogenic bacterial problem. The bacterial accumulation of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck 1919) in the presence or absence of another filter feeder, the demosponge Hymeniacidon perlevis (Montagu 1818) on sewage flowing into the Northern Ionian Sea has been estimated in a laboratory study. On account of the interesting results obtained, we also evaluated the bioremediation capability of the sponges when reared in co-culture with mussels. Specimens of M. galloprovincialis and H. perlevis were collected from the Mar Grande and from the Second Inlet of the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Northern Ionian Sea, Italy), respectively. In the laboratory, we detected the bacterial abundances in the sewage, in sponge homogenates (both sponges alone and sponges that have been added to sewage with mussels) and in mussel homogenates (both mussels alone and mussels that have been added to sewage with sponges). In the field, we estimated the bacterial concentration in both the seawater within the mussels culture and the seawater collected where mussels were reared in co-culture with sponges. The bacteriological analyses were performed analysing the following parameters: the density of culturable heterotrophic bacteria by spread plate on marine agar, total culturable bacteria at 37 A degrees C on plate count agar and vibrios on thiosulphate-citrate-bile-sucrose-salt (TCBS) agar. Total coliforms, Escherichia coli and intestinal streptococci concentrations were detected by the MPN method. The study demonstrates a higher efficiency of the sponges in removing all the considered bacterial groups compared to the mussels. Due to the conspicuous bacterial accumulation by the sponge, we can conclude that the co-occurrence of the filter-feeder H. perlevis with M. galloprovincialis is a powerful tool in reducing the bacterial load in shellfish culture areas thus playing a role in mitigating the health hazard related to the consumption of edible mussels.

Spread of alien species (AS) is a serious threat to marine habitats and analysis of principal descriptors of their occurrence is pivotal to set reliable conservation strategies. 2. In order to assess the susceptibility of marine habitats to biological invasions, a dataset was gathered of the occurrence of 3899 species from 29 phyla, taken from 93 marine sites located along the Italian coast in the period 2000-2012.

Introduction of alien species is one of the major threats to aquatic biota and knowledge of the major correlates of their occurrence is pivotal in planning reliable conservation strategies. 2. To understand whether specific freshwater habitats are more likely to be invaded than others, a dataset on the occurrence of 1604 species in 54 taxonomic groups from 181 sites across the Italian peninsula was gathered. 3. TheEUNIShabitatclassificationwas used, selectingfor the study's seven habitat types at thesecondEUNIS level, including lentic (EUNIS C1; 64 sites), lotic (EUNIS C2; 99 sites) and highly artificial (EUNIS J5; 18 sites) habitats. 4. The aim of the study was to test whether the overall number of alien species and the proportion of alien species for each taxonomic group differed between habitat types and could be explained by environmental, human-mediated, or climatic factors. 5. Using generalized linear mixed effect models to account for potential confounding factors, only average air temperature of the site was a significant positive predictor of the occurrence of alien species, regardless of habitat type, species richness, and other climatic variables. 6. A direct effect of temperature could be excluded given the origin of alien species, mostly from colder areas than Italy. Population abundance, distribution and habitat preference of the Mediterra-nean sympatric seahorses Hippocampus guttulatus and Hippocampus hippocam-pus were investigated in a semi-enclosed sea system (Apulian coast, IonianSea). A total of 242 individuals of seahorses were sighted in the 11 transectssurveyed in summer 2011. Hippocampus guttulatus (n = 225) were 14 timesmore abundant than H. hippocampus (17). The mean abundance of H. guttula-tus for all the pooled sites was 0.018 m 2 (SE 0.003) ranging from a maxi-mum of 0.035 (SE 0.007) to a minimum of 0.008 (SE 0.002). The sizestructure of long-snouted seahorse shows a population ranging from 7 to14 cm (SL) with a peak at 10 cm (TL). Juveniles (96.0 8.0 mm) represent asignificant fraction of the population, accounting more than 21% of the sightedindividuals. In Mar Piccolo, H. guttulatus is able to shelter both in monoto-nous habitats, including the algal beds, and diversified ones, such as the richfilter-feeder communities that colonize hard substrates. By contrast, H. hippo-campus is mainly associated with habitats of low complexity. Today, the MarPiccolo di Taranto is among the most heavily polluted water bodies in SouthItaly, with trace metals, hydrocarbons, pesticides and organic wastes affectingboth biotic and abiotic matrices. The structure of the waterbird community at Lago Salso in Southern Italy, Apulia, was surveyed over a 4-year period (2003–2006), during the breeding season (May-July). Lago Salso is an artificial lake with high water levels. Flooding of the surrounding fields, due to copious seasonal rainfalls, occasionally forms vast swampy wetlands around Lago Salso. The variation in waterbird structure and composition, concomitantly with the occurrence of these flooded habitats, is described. In particular, during 2003–2005 there was little variation in annual species richness and diversity at the lake. However, in 2006 the waterbird community changed in species composition and significantly increased in species richness (from 21 ± 3.8 to 32 ± 2.5 species) and abundance values (from 222 ± 167 to 988 ± 42.4 individuals) with the presence of wet grasslands. Clionaids are excavating sponges, which live in and grow into calcareous substrates. We studied the sexual reproductive cycles of two clionaid sponges coexisting in a Mediterranean coastal basin (Porto Cesareo, Italy), Cliona viridis and Cliona celata, by analyzing monthly tissue samples of ten specimens of each species collected over a 2-year period. From May to June of the second study year, supplementary samples were taken weekly. Up to 90% of the specimens of C. viridis and 70% of those of C. celata sampled were reproductive during the study. In both species, but particularly in C. viridis, reproductive investment, measured as the percentage of sponge tissue occupied by gametes, was high. Oocytes were present almost year-round in both species, except for a 1–4-month period after zygote release. In contrast, spermatogenesis occurred most frequently in May in both species, when (May–June) oocytes reached their greatest diameters. Cliona viridis and C. celata are hermaphrodites, with oocytes and spermatic cysts coexisting in 10% of the studied individuals in the first year of the study, and in 30% during the second. No developing embryos or larvae were incubated in the sponge tissues, and fertilization was not observed. Temperature may play a role in triggering some important phases of the reproduction of these Cliona, such as oocyte maturation and spermatogenesis, which occurred when water temperature increased from 17°C to 25°C between May and June.

The macrozoobenthic assemblage from the Karavasta lagoon system, the main wetland of Albania, was studied on soft bottoms and artificial hard substrates. Three different communities were identified: the typical ‘brackish-water community’, an ‘outlet community’ dominated by filter-feeders, and a typical ‘marine community’, inhabiting fine sandy bottoms, where polychaetes are dominant, together with a few species of tunicates and bivalves, which colonize hard substrates. The occurrence of build-ups of the bryozoan Conopeum seurati, settled on the upper portion of long submerged wooden poles, was the main feature of faunistic interest. The faunistic affinity between the zoobenthic assemblage recorded in the hyperhaline lagoon of Karavasta and the assemblages from two Italian lagoons, the brackish Lake of Lesina and the euhaline Lake of Fogliano, was considered according to the different hydrological conditions and the geographical location. Hydrological confinement and salinity were likely to be the leading factors influencing the benthic community composition in the Karavasta wetland area. Therefore, on a vaster spatial scale, the isolation and geographical proximity of the ecosystems and colonizing ability and dispersal changes of the species appear to be the main factors liable to produce faunal variations.

The present study focuses on the reproductive success of transplants of the bath sponge Spongia officinalis Linnaeus, 1759, with the aim of investigating the possibility of restocking this species, one of the most endangered organisms of the Mediterranean sessile zoobenthos. Transplants of S. officinalis, collected from a wild population along the Apulian coasts (Ionian Sea, Italy), have been moved into an area where the species was present in the past. The transplants consisted both of specimens in toto and of fragments of different sizes, obtained after having cut the mother sponge into pieces. All transplanted sponges showed complete cicatrisation of the cut surfaces within a month of the initial manipulation and had a survival rate of 100% throughout the 12 months of the study. From the present investigation, it has emerged that the reproductive effort and the larval release by the transplants do not differ significantly from those shown by the source population. This successful technical approach supports its application as a strategy for restocking the population of this endangered species.

The relevance of the budding process in a population of Tethya citrina inhabiting an unpredictable environment subjected to frequent anoxic crisis (Mar Piccolo di Taranto) is described, and new data about the fate of the buds after their release are provided. At the individual level, for the first time in natural conditions, it has been demonstrated that several budding events follow each other, alternating with short periods (1–2 months) of rest. At the population level, budding proved to be a continuous process, being detected throughout the 13 months of study, with a short summer decrease both in the frequency of budding specimens and bud density. This trend was markedly different from that reported for conspecific populations inhabiting stable environments, in which budding is a seasonal process. It is hypothesized that the sudden and unpredictable variations of the ecological conditions could be responsible for the onset of repeated budding events, thus stressing the role of environmental factors in affecting the asexual reproductive pattern. T. citrina buds, here investigated, tend to detach from the adult sponge within 7/15 days of their differentiation, a feature coherent with experimental data carried out under laboratory conditions. A significant relationship between the size/age of the post-buds and the onset of the asexual reproduction has been proved: in particular, the first budding event was observed in nine-month-old sponges, measuring about 7 mm in diameter. As reported for other demosponges, in T. citrina post-buds the growth rate was positively related to the water temperature, with a significant increase during the summer. In addition, a negative effect of the budding process on the sponge growth, is hypothesized for a post-bud subjected to repeated budding events. Growth rate, however, proved highly variable.

The buds of the sponge Tethya seychellensis, collected in May 2006 from South Male Atoll (Maldives), have been processed for histological and ultrastructural investigations. Buds show three stages, different in morphology and size, reflecting different steps of their differentiation: round-shaped buds (stage I), cylindrical-shaped buds (II) and thin-stalked spearshaped buds (III). Cells with inclusions, belonging to the category of spherulous cells, are the main components of these buds. At stage I, some irregularly shaped cells, probably precursors of the choanocytes, are able to engulf and remove portions of the collagen matrix, a feature which could be interpreted as an initial step in choanocyte differentiation. Tethya seychellensis stands out among the other congeneric species owing to the occurrence of choanocyte chambers in the unreleased buds, as observed at stages II and III. The precocious differentiation of the choanocyte chambers allows the detached bud to act as a young functional sponge, thus enhancing the survival chances of these filter-feeding organisms. The structure of the buds of T. seychellensis stresses once more that in the genus Tethya the organisation of the buds represents a species-specific process, which varies according to the plasticity and the morphogenetic potentiality expressed by a single species.

The calcareous sponge Paraleucilla magna has been detected at different Mediterranean sites (Taranto, Porto Cesareo, Brindisi and Naples). Its record in well studied areas where several benthic surveys have previously been carried out suggests a recent introduction of the species into the Mediterranean Sea. Until now this sponge has only been recorded from the Brazilian coast. It shows different morphologies, varying from tubular to an irregular massive shape with several folds occurring on its surface. The colour is white-cream. The surface is smooth. The consistency is friable. The oscula are 10–20 mm in diameter and located at the top of tubular protrusions. The skeleton consists of cortical and subatrial triactines and tetractines, together with atrial triactines, differently distributed in the sponge body. Paraleucilla magna is abundant in eutrophic environments, where seasonally it may reach very high frequency values and large dimensions. It is resistant to pollution, but it is also able to live in clean waters. The inclusion of this species among Mediterranean alien invasive species is suggested.

The macrofauna settling on experimental substrates was studied at two sites of the Lesina Lagoon to test its possible role in monitoring ecological variations in a brackish-water ecosystem. The community settlement was seasonally investigated on 3-month-old wooden poles; the development was monitored from 2001 to 2005. Comparisons with benthic assemblages settled on 10-yr-old poles were also performed. The main hydrological parameters were periodically measured during the study. A total of 38 species were collected. The assemblage reached the highest development in the central lagoon, showing relevant carbonate structures which supported a rich vagile fauna. Close to the sea-water inlet species richness and abundance values were lower, with the disappearance of some brackish-water species. A remarkable salinity drop during 2004 produced some faunistic changes in the assemblages, which however maintained different structures between the study sites, thus confirming macrozoobenthos as an efficient bioindica...

This study investigated the development of the larvae of Spongia officinalis in experimental conditions, after settlement on plastic substrates, using electron and light microscopy. The released larvae show a dark pigmented ring distinguishes the posterior larval pole. The youngest larvae, covered with a flagellate epithelium, move onwards by rotating on their longitudinal axis. Over time a creeping-like motion prevails, probably linked to the need for settlement. After a free-swimming period of 24-48 h, larvae settle on the artificial substrate by the anterior pole. At settlement, the flagellate epithelium is substituted by flattened cells, which delimit the outermost surface. Post-larvae were reared to about three months. The early phase of post-larval differentiation shows a solid interior mainly consisting of granular cells varying in shape and size. They are included in a dense collagen matrix that contains a conspicuous amount of bacteria. Lacunae are already evident in the initial phase of metamorphosis. In several of them, cell debris and nucleate cells are visible. This feature is consistent with a progressive reduction of the cell mass (autolysis). Neither choanocyte chambers nor canals differentiate. The morphogenetic process leads to a metamorph only consisting of vacuolated cells and collagen fibrils included in a thin fibrous coat.

The reproductive cycle of the bath sponge Spongia officinalis L. has been studied over 1 year on 11 tagged specimens of different sizes (from 82 to 886 ml, in volume) from Ionian coasts of Apulia (SE Italy). According to literature data, the sponge is viviparous. All the monitored specimens showed sexual reproduction, even if the process usually involved small portions of the sponge tissue. Ten specimens were gonochoric (sex ratio 1:1), one specimen showed successive hermaphroditism, with alternate production of oocytes and spermatic cysts in the same reproductive season. Young oocytes occur almost all year round, whereas large mature eggs show a peak in October–November, concomitantly with the appearance of spermatic cysts. No relationships were observed between the sponge size and the presence of sexual elements within the range of the sponge size considered in this research. Embryo development occurs in patches of choanosomal tissue, which contain four or more elements. Cleavage is total and equal; it starts in November and in May leads to a solid stereoblastula, which develops into a parenchymella larva, from May to July. The stereoblastula lacks flagella and its surface is delimited by elongated cells well segregated from the internal ones. Parenchymella larvae are released from June to July, asynchronously, either at the individual or population level, with a few days of de-phasing. Up to 523 larval elements/48 h for a sponge specimen were counted. The free-swimming larvae are ovoid and uniformly flagellated. Flagella are longer at the posterior region, than on the rest of the larval body. Flagellated cells form a pseudo-stratified epithelial layer, delimiting the outermost larval surface, and are filled with electron-lucent vesicles showing a homogenous content. No choanocyte chambers, pinacocytes or skeletal elements are present in the newly released larvae.

The spatial distribution and temporal changes of demosponges and bryozoans in the northern basin of the Venice Lagoon were studied from samples collected from wooden piles and artificial rocks in June and October 2001. Twenty species of demosponges and 18 species of bryozoans were recorded. Sponges were found at 10 out of 11 sampling stations, while bryozoans were found at all 11 sampling stations. The studied taxocoenoses showed a high percentage cover of the lagoon hard bottoms. Eleven out of the 20 detected species of sponges were reported in a previous study on this taxocoenosis carried out on material collected in 1954–1955. Moreover, the most abundant species were also recorded during a study in 1989. These observations suggest a remarkable degree of persistence of the sponge community. Among bryozoans, the comparison with literature data showed a wider variation in species composition, with the occurrence of five new species in the studied area. The reproductive cycle of Geodia cydonium in a semi-enclosed Mediterranean bay (Porto Cesareo, SW Apulia) was studied with monthly frequency over a 3-year period. The investigation was carried out by uti- lizing a technique consisting of tagging ten individuals with a PVC stick and cutting oV, by means of a metal cork borer, small samples (cylinders about 5 cm 3 in vol- ume) from each of them for histological analysis. Sex- ual reproductive elements were detected in all individuals, but in the third year some specimens showed reduced reproductive activity or complete infertility. Spermatogenesis occurred in a short period (from June to August) whereas oogenesis lasted longer (from spring to late summer). Spermatic cysts occurred when the frequency of specimens with oocytes reached its maximum values. A relationship between water temperature and the onset of gamete diVerentiation was observed. G. cydonium is here conWrmed ovipa- rous and gonochoric with a sex ratio in favour of the females. However, in contrast with current literature on Porifera—which suggests that only a limited num- ber of sponges, all belonging to the same species are sexually active—the sexual reproduction of this species involves all the examined individuals. This Wnding can be explained by the methodological approach used in this research, which diVers from the traditional way of assessing the sponge reproductive cycle by analysing randomly collected specimens within a population. The study of a series of individuals over time represents a better "model technique" for investigating sponge sex- ual reproduction and the eVect of environmental parameters on gamete diVerentiation.

A new species of the genus Cliona is described: Cliona spissaspira sp. n., collected at 1 m depth in a shallow bay of the Ionian coast of Apulia (Southern Italy). The species, erected on the basis of the finding of two small specimens, shows a boring habitus, with an irregular pattern of galleries and spaciously distributed perforating chambers. Its colour varies from orange to light brown. The spiculation consists of short robust tylostyles, together with smooth thick spirasters. The latter vary in length and shape, and constitute the main diagnostic character of the species. The affinity of these species with other Mediterranean Clionaidae is discussed.

Thirty species of sponges (29 Demospongiae, 1 Hexactinellida) have been recorded in association with a white coral bank situated off Cape S. Maria di Leuca (southern Italy) at depths ranging from 430 to 1160 metres. Notwithstanding the occurrence of clearly eurybathic species, two depth-dependent sponge groups can be identified along the bathymetric gradient. Two species, Geodia nodastrella and Plocamiopsis signata, are reported for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. The sponge assemblage shows a higher affinity with the fauna from the Boreal region, with very low number of Mediterranean endemic species. Systematic notes concerning the poorly known and intriguing species, studied using scanning electron microscopy analysis, are reported.

The availability of bath sponges has been recently reduced due to the depletion of natural banks due to the high fishing pressure together with some local epidemic events. At present, the commercial supply is far below the demand. The main purpose of this work was to estimate the rearing performance of Spongia officinalis var. adriatica, one of the most common Mediterranean commercial sponges, testing two different variants of culture on suspended ropes: a horizontal system placed close to the seabed, and a vertical system extended along the water column. The trials were carried out in Southern Italy (Ionian coast of Apulia, Central Mediterranean) from April 1997 to April 2000. Wild specimens of sponge were cut into pieces of different weight to test possible differences in growth and survival. During the study period, both systems resisted deterioration due to water movement and other ecological factors. In general, the growth performance (average weight, specific growth rate) did not significantly vary between the cultivation systems, nor were statistical differences in growth detected between the cuttings of different initial size. The mean growth observed was rather variable among sponge cuttings, even considering the same rearing condition and size range. The measured variations of hydrological parameters did not seem to affect survival, growth performance, or reproductive activity, which was detected almost all year round. Larger explants (about 50 g in wet weight) reached the commercial size after three years of rearing, thus identifying this initial size as the most suitable for cultivation

Marine natural products extracted from sponges represent a new source for drug discovery. Here we describe a simple method for preparing aqueous extracts from 7 Mediterranean demosponges, which allowed the extraction of water-soluble compounds, such as proteins by homogenization of sponge tissue in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). The comparative analysis by SDS-PAGE showed differences in number of bands, bandwidth and intensity among the sponges analyzed. The PAS/silver staining revealed a substantial and different glycoprotein assortment among the demosponges studied. To further study the biological activities present in the sponge extracts, we determined the non-cytotoxic doses on four different mammalian cell types demonstrating that the optimal non-cytotoxic doses were cell type- and extract-dependent. In conclusion, the extraction method described in this paper represents a fast and efficient procedure for the extraction of water-soluble proteins from marine sponges. Furthermore, the cell viability data suggest the feasibility of this method for the direct in vitro cell-based assays.

Polychaete assemblages associated to the sponge Geodia cydonium were investigated at two sampling sites in the Mediterranean Sea: Porto Cesareo Basin (Apulia) and Marsala Lagoon (Sicily), both characterized by sheltered hydrodynamic conditions. Samples were seasonally performed during 1997, in order to compare the assemblages coming from the two localities studied, considering separately the internal and external tissues of the sponge, and with the aim of evaluating the influence of sponge size on polychaete colonization. The examined sponge is characterized by a peculiar stratification of its tissues: an external thick and hard layer, the cortex, and an internal softer one, the choanosome. Statistical analysis showed that this was the main factor controlling polychaete assemblage, with the internal tissue, less rich and diversified, appearing impoverished with respect to the external layer. A similarity in species composition was observed between sites, even though some differences were evidenced in the abundance of some species, mainly reflecting differences in local environmental conditions. Species richness and density increased with the increasing sponge size. Such a situation is particularly evident at Porto Cesareo, where sponges are covered by an algal layer which is particularly rich on the largest specimens, thus suggesting that most of the species of polychaetes were linked more to the neighbouring environment than to the sponge itself.

The sexual and asexual phases of the reproductive cycle of the sponge Mycalecontarenii (Martens, 1824) were studied from samples collected over a period of 2 years (June 1994 to May 1996) in a Mediterranean coastal basin (Porto Cesareo, southwestern Apulia). The species is viviparous; year round it shows a discontinuous oocyte production. No males were found, possibly owing to the very short period of spermatogenesis. M.␣contarenii produces asexual buds during autumn and winter, and this process seems to be related to changes in water temperature. Even though, at present, we cannot evaluate the incidence of larval recruitment, we postulate that asexual reproduction in M.contarenii plays a crucial role in maintaining the sponge population.

A coastal red coral [Corallium rubrum (L.)] population, whose age structure and demographic parameters have been previously analysed, harbours 10 species of endobiotic sponges. This sponge assemblage differs considerably from that inhabiting other calcareous substrata of the surrounding area, suggesting some selectivity for red coral. The two most common endobiotic species, Spiroxya heteroclita Topsent and Cliona sarai Melone, are described in detail. The percentage of infested coral colonies increases according with colony age, with a sharp increment at four years. An increase in coral colony mortality observed at this age may be related to the increment of endobiotic sponge infestation.
