The fight against the global threat of climate change requires, among other actions, to increase the penetration of renewable energy technologies and diversify the energy mix in order to support a resilient energy system that can reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Offshore energy is expected to drive the energy transition, with wave energy having the major role to provide a reliable baseload and reduce the need for storage; however, its techno-economic feasibility requires reduction of costs and increase of energy conversion efficiency. This paper tackles a fundamental innovation of a device’s working principle which, jointly exploiting pendulum and gyroscopic effects, steps-up the overall conversion efficiency in real operational conditions. A recent patent proposes a technological solution that conveniently combines pendulum and gyroscopic effects in order to effectively exploit motion also outside the plane, namely in the three-dimensional space and from all degrees of freedom (DoFs). This paper tackles the endeavour of the analytical formulation of the electro-mechanical conversion system dynamics, considering at first the fully-nonlinear equation of motion, obtained through a Lagrangian approach. Consequently, incremental simplifications are applied to accommodate practical application, based on the study on the relative importance of each term in the equation of motion. Furthermore, preliminary results are produced and discussed, comparing the behaviour in response to 3-DoF to 6-DoF exploitation.

Given their prevalence in a contemporary digital society, memes hardly need an introduction. They pervade playful social media and are also produced and shared in abundance around elections, protests, and social movements. Much of the scholarship surrounding memes takes as its point of departure that they are collections of artefacts, rather than single pieces. Practically speaking, their study thus relies on making meme collections. In the following, we show how to make meme collections by querying and extracting memes from four key sites: the meme database Know Your Meme, the web search engine Google Images, the meme host and generator Imgur, and the Facebook marketing dashboard CrowdTangle. Thereafter, we unpack these collections using two software applications and methodologies (image similarity grouping and computer vision) in order to make the point that each site shapes the kind of collection that is made. More starkly put, each site or online environment affects the conceptualisation as well as the composition of the meme collection gathered in that the formats and sources vary per platform.

We conducted an epidemiologic investigation among survivors of an outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in Jordan. A second-trimester stillbirth occurred during the course of an acute respiratory illness that was attributed to MERS-CoV on the basis of exposure history and positive results of MERS-CoV serologic testing. This is the first occurrence of stillbirth during an infection with MERS-CoV and may have bearing upon the surveillance and management of pregnant women in settings of unexplained respiratory illness potentially due to MERS-CoV. Future prospective investigations of MERS-CoV should ascertain pregnancy status and obtain further pregnancy-related data, including biological specimens for confirmatory testing.

Robotic technology is the natural evolution and simplification of traditional laparoscopy. Robotic surgery has the same benefits of traditional laparoscopic surgery in terms of cosmetic results, pain control and short in-hospital stay. However, magnified three-dimensional vision and the use of fully articulated wristed-instruments allow to increase the precision control. Recently, robotic surgery has been even more used in urology. In fact, robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is currently the most common treatment used for localized prostate cancer in the United States. Perioperative and functional outcomes resulted significantly better after RARP. As a consequence of the diffusion of RARP, other urological procedures were performed using the robotic approach. Particular attention has been paid to the use of robotic surgery for the treatment of benign and malignant renal diseases. In 2002 the first robot-assisted pyeloplasty was performed followed by the first robot-assisted partial nephrectomy. This last procedure had widespread a lot in the last years and it can currently be considered as the main alternative to the traditional open partial nephrectomy. Finally, the evolution of technology and surgeon skills allowed us to consider the less invasive approaches also for renal transplantation surgery and vena cava tumor thrombectomy. The objective of this review was to analyze current indications and outcomes of robot-assisted procedures for the treatment of benign and malignant renal diseases.

Knowledge about the balance between heritable and nonheritable risk in multiple sclerosis (MS) is based on twin studies in high-prevalence areas. In a study that avoided ascertainment limitations and directly compared continental Italy (medium-prevalence) and Sardinia (high-prevalence), we ascertained 216 pairs from 34,549 patients. This gives a twinning rate of 0.62% among MS patients, significantly less than that of the general population. In continental Italy, probandwise concordance was 14.5% (95% confidence interval, 5.1-23.8) for monozygotic and 4.0% (95% confidence interval, 0.8-7.1) for dizygotic twins. Results in Sardinia resemble those in northern populations but in limited numbers. Monozygotic concordance was 22.2% (95% confidence interval, 0-49.3) probandwise, but no concordant dizygotic pairs were identified. A questionnaire on 80 items possibly related to disease cause was administered to 70 twin pairs, 135 sporadic patients, and 135 healthy volunteers. Variables positively (7) or negatively (2) associated with predisposition and concordance in twins largely overlapped and were mainly linked to infection. If compared with previous studies, our data demonstrate that penetrance in twins appears to correlate with MS prevalence. They highlight the relevance of nonheritable variables in Mediterranean areas. The apparent underrepresentation of MS among Italian twins draws attention to protective factors, shared by twins, that may influence susceptibility.

We report the synthesis of new guanylhydrazones from imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles and of a bis-guanylhydrazone from diimidazo[1,2-a:1,2-c]pyrimidine. The compounds were tested as potential antitumor agents at the National Cancer Institute. Two derivatives are now under review by BEC: one of these was also subjected to a test for positive inotropic activity in view of a possible coanthracyclinic activity. Tyrosine kinase receptors may be involved as molecular targets in the mechanism of action of the guanylhydrazones described.

Diabet. Med. 29, 761-766 (2012) ABSTRACT: Aims Several studies confirmed the growing rate of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in childhood coinciding with increasing diagnosis of viral infections. A study investigating the incidence of Type 1 diabetes during 1996-1997 showed a higher notification of viral infections in the Pavia District. The aim was to confirm these results. Methods This study evaluated the relationship between new cases of Type 1 diabetes and those of measles, mumps and rubella in 1996-2001, analysing data of newly-diagnosed Type 1 diabetes children, aged 0-14 years and enrolled into the RIDI (Italian Insulin-dependent Diabetes Registry) during the same years. Measles, rubella and mumps rates were calculated using as denominator the estimated 'population at risk', represented by the number of 0- to 14 year-old subjects who did not undergo the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination. In order to investigate the association between Type 1 diabetes incidence and measles, rubella and mumps respectively, Spearman's rank correlation was used. Results The analysis of the whole Registries data did not at first show any statistical significance between age-standardized Type 1 diabetes incidence density and estimated rates of measles, mumps and rubella notifications. Excluding data from Sardinia Registry, a significant association was observed between Type 1 diabetes incidence and mumps (P = 0.034) and rubella (P = 0.014), respectively, while there was no statistical significance between the incidence of measles cases and diabetes rates (P = 0.269). Conclusions According to our findings, mumps and rubella viral infections are associated with the onset of Type 1 diabetes. The statistical significance observed after exclusion of the Sardinian data suggests that other environmental factors may operate over populations with different genetic susceptibility Diabet. The quinoline nucleus of the previously described 4-phenylquinoline-3-carboxamides NK(1) receptor ligands 7 has been transformed into either substituted or azole-(i.e., triazole or tetrazole) fused pyridine moieties of compounds 9 and 10, respectively, in order to obtain NK(1) receptor ligands showing lower molecular weight or higher hydrophilicity. The program of molecular manipulations produced NK(1) receptor ligands showing affinity in the nanomolar range. In particular, 4-methyl-1-piperazinyl derivative 9j showed an IC(50) value of 4.8nM and was proved to behave as a NK(1) antagonist blocking Sar(9)-SP-sulfone induced proliferation and migration of microvascular endothelial cells. Therefore, compound 9j has been labeled with [(11)C]CH(3)I (t(1/2)=20.4min, ²(+)=99.8%) starting from the corresponding des-methyl precursor 9i using with a radiochemical yield of about 10% (not decay corrected) and a specific radioactivity>1Ci/¼mol in order to be used as a radiotracer in next PET studies.

The early stage of entanglement growth in a Bose system on a lattice is studied by means of analytical methods. A local unitary transformation is established which allows us to introduce Bose-Einstein condensation and the related weak-coupling approximation. We calculate both the entanglement of each lattice site with all other sites and the entanglement between pairs of sites. The first quantity weakly depends on the system size, while the second one exhibits peculiar oscillations within the time range of validity of our approximation.

A quantum two-level system based on the superposition of current states circulating in either the clockwise or counterclockwise direction is proposed. A one-dimensional ring with inhomogeneity in the on-site energies is shown to be suitable to exhibit such an effect. Quantum oscillations between two states can be observed by initialization of the system through a trapped magnetic field. We consider decoherence effects due to electron-phonon interaction and discuss possible effects derived from disorder. Finally, a possible application to carbon nanotubes is discussed.

Aid programs in developing countries are likely to affect both the treated and the non-treated households living in the targeted areas. Studies that focus on the treatment effecton the treated may fail to capture important spillover effects. We exploit the unique designof an aid program's experimental trial to identify its indirect effect on consumption for non-eligible households living in treated areas. We find that this effect is positive, and that itoccurs through changes in the insurance and credit markets: non-eligible households receivemore transfers, and borrow more when hit by a negative idiosyncratic shock, because of theprogram liquidity injection; thus they can reduce their precautionary savings. We also testfor general equilibrium effects in the local labor and goods markets; we find no significantchanges in labor income and prices, while there is a reduction in earnings from sales ofagricultural products, which are now consumed rather than sold. We show that this classof aid programs has important positive externalities; thus their overall effect is larger thanthe effect on the treated. Our results confirm that a key identifying assumption - that thetreatment has no effect on the non-treated - is likely to be violated in similar policy designs. Fracture of the penis is a relatively rare condition, defined as the rupture of the tumescent corpora cavernosa. The fracture is quite easily recognized, whereas its management remains controversial. Our experience regarding the early treatment of penile fractures is herein reported.In a 7-year period (1997-2004) 10 patients aged 23 to 42 years, presented with a penile fracture, occurred during coitus. All patients were admitted to the hospital 1 to 10 hours after injury. Diagnosis was made on clinical examination. Six patients referred a snapping sound at the time of injury. Common clinical features included sudden penile pain, detumescence and penile deviation. All patients showed penile haematoma; 3 had scrotal and perineal haematoma as well. None of the patients had urethral bleeding.all patients were surgically treated; at the time of surgery unilateral albuginea rupture was found in all cases. With a mean follow-up of 37 months (range 1-78) all cases were able to achieve an adequate erection. No complications, such as deformations, penile plaque, urethral fistula or erectile dysfunction were reported.Immediate surgical repair in case of penile fracture is recommended in order to obtain better functional outcome and to avoid potential complications.

The New Deal For Young People is the major welfare-to-work program in the UK. It is amandatory multistage policy targeted at the 18-24 year old unemployed. This paper investi-gates the effectiveness of the program in terms of enhancing the (re)employment probabilityof participant males. I exploit the eligibility rule to identify a suitable counterfactual relyingupon a simple regression discontinuity design. By exploiting such a discontinuity I am ableto non parametrically identify (Hahn et al., 2001) a local average treatment effect (LATE).While relying upon the non parametric local linear regression method I am able to pushforward such a parameter to a \global" dimension, implicitly adding parametric structure.No evidence of possible general equilibrium as well as substitution effects is found by a cohort specific approach (before and after the program). The main result is that the programenhances employability by about 6-7%.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has been long debated as a possible cause of erectile dysfunction (ED). We investigated the role of common risk factors for ED in patients aged 60 to 70 undergoing TURP Factors related to the treatment were also considered.Ninety patients underwent TURP for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) from June 2002 to February 2003. Fourty-two of them, sexually active aged 60 to 70, were administered preoperatively and 3-month postoperatively the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaires. A complete assessment of risk factors for ED was performed in the preoperative setting (treated hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking, hypercolesterolemy, cardiovascular disease). IIEF score was related to age, comorbidities, operative time, resected tissue weight, retrograde ejaculation, IPSS score.Nine (21.4%) patients reported worsened IIEF-5 score after TURP, and 33 (78.6%) unchanged/improved score. Cardiovascular disease was present in 56% of patients with worsened IIEF-5 score and in 12% of patients with improved/unchanged IIEF-5 score; it was the only factor that correlated significantly in the regression model.In general, most patients report a stable sexual function after TURP. Patients with known cardiovascular disease undergoing TURP had an increased risk of sexual impairment after this procedure.
