International audience; New investigations were carried out to demonstrate the ability of Trichoderma viride dead biomass for the bioremoval of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The gathered experimental data were initially modelled considering both adsorption and reduction kinetic models, followed by equilibrium models. In the next step, Design of Experiments method (DoE) and a Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm were applied for determining the optimal Response Surface Methodology and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models which are able to correlate the process efficiency with the experimental conditions. In addition, DE (in combination with the previously determined ANN) was used to obtain the optimal working conditions for maximum process efficiency. These optimization procedures allow setting various process parameters and working conditions which ensure the maximum bioremoval efficiency. DoE highlighted that all the study parameters have statistically significant individual influence on Cr(VI) bioremoval efficiency and, for example, at pH 2 and a temperature of 50 °C, 100% of Cr(VI) is bioremoved if the biosorbent dosage is 10 g/L, considering a minimum contact time of 2 h and given a maximum initial concentration of 122.5 mg/L. According to the ANN model, a contact time set at 24 h yields optimal values for Cr(VI) bioremoval by dead biomass considering pH 1.00, 3 g/L biosorbent dosage, 23 mg/L metallic ion concentration and a temperature of 50 °C. pHpzc, FT-IR and SEM-EDX analyses were included for biomass characterization and to underline the bioremoval mechanism of Cr(VI). Our results are providing a solid basis for the development of technologies for detoxification of contaminated effluents. © 2022 Institution of Chemical Engineers

Introduction. Hepatic steatosis represents a common pathological feature in patients with chronic viral C infection and can be independently associated with obesity, increased alcohol consumption, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. These factors can contribute to the development of hepatic steatosis in patients with chronic HCV (Hepatitis C virus) infection. Materials and methods. 64 patients who underwent treatment with oral antivirals were included and evaluated through non-invasive methods for the degree of hepatic steatosis. Results. After at least 3 months of sustained viral response, all patients with advanced hepatic steatosis were categorized into lower classes in the Steatotest evaluation. Conclusion. This study highlights the importance of direct acting antiviral (DAA) treatment in the medical care of patients with chronic viral C infection and hepatic steatosis. Thirty years after the discovery of the hepatitis C virus, treatment with oral antivirals revolutionizes the medical care of patients with this chronic infection.

Environmental pollution with heavy metals continues to affect soil quality and crops yields. Among remediation solutions, biotechnology offers a number of environmentally friendly options, one of which is phytoremediation. The use of plants as hyperaccumulators for heavy metal ions is beneficial in terms of feasibility, costs, but has the disadvantage that plants may be affected by heavy metals toxicity. Also, heavy metals are often found in soil in less bioavailable forms to be extracted by plant roots. To overcome these shortcomings, various techniques have been proposed to intensify and accelerate the phytoremediation. They are analyzed and concisely described in this paper, emphasizing how these techniques can act to increase plant tolerance to the toxicity of heavy metal ions and can change the conditions in the rhizosphere area to favor heavy metals extraction and the transport in the roots and their translocation towards the aerial parts of the plant.

Objective Identifying the morphological features of thymus in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) with anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies and concomitant Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), which were recruited from a single surgical unit of a tertiary referral hospital located in the North-Eastern region of Romania, over a period of 11 years. Patients, materials and methods We retrospectively reviewed clinical, imaging, laboratory, thymic pathology, and outcome data that were obtained from medical records of patients with MG and concomitant HT, to whom a thymectomy was performed for a suspected thymic lesion. All the surgical interventions were done in the Third Clinic of Surgery, St. Spiridon Emergency County Hospital, Iasi, Romania, for an 11 years' period, i.e., from January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2010. Results Four patients (three females and one male) were included. The mean age of the patients at the time of their thymectomy was 40.25 years. Of all patients, 75% had moderate or severe MG, 100% had anti-AChR antibodies, and an electromyographic decrement greater than 25%. All patients have been diagnosed with HT in their past medical history by a full thyroid panel [high thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) values, low free thyroxine (fT4) values, and the presence of the anti-thyroid antibodies] and all of them have been treated with Euthyrox. Our four patients expressed different MG subtypes, each of them being associated with different thymus pathology. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan revealed heterogeneous mediastinal masses and established the correct diagnosis only in 25% of cases. The pathological exams also revealed a heterogeneous pattern of thymic lesions. In contrast with other studies, our patients with MG with anti-AChR antibodies and concomitant HT presented atrophic thymus more frequently (50%), but with particular morphological changes of Hassall's corpuscles. Also, 25% of cases were diagnosed with thymic lympho-follicular hyperplasia (TLFH) associated with thymic epithelial hyperplasia. In B2 thymoma, neoplastic epithelial cells expressed cytokeratin 19 (CK19) immunoreactivity, high Ki67 labeling index and strong p63 immunopositivity. Conclusions In our series, MG and HT occurred simultaneously, or one of them was diagnosed before the other, raising some new questions regarding the immune mechanism of these two autoimmune diseases. Due to the heterogeneous morphological changes of the thymus that we found in this study, we can hypothesize that thymus is involved in the pathogenic mechanism of MG with anti-AChR-antibodies and concomitant HT development.

Based on recent ramifications of the traditional agenda-setting model, this paper aims at analyzing the convergence of the media and the public agenda in times of crisis. Specifically, drawing upon the network agenda-setting theory, this article explores the main key words associated with COVID-19—related topics in both the media and the public agendas. Main findings suggest that the media used context dependent key words to refer to the pandemic. At the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, both television and online news stories referred to issues related to the vi- rus itself, to the measures taken to limit its spread, and to some medical conditions, while in January 2021 media focused on key words related to vaccination and immunization. In terms of public agenda, results show that people tended to refer to pandemic-related issues mainly in negative terms, due to both media exposure and, presumably, personal experiences. These results offer valuable insights into the dynamics of both media and public agenda in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing fertile ground for better understanding how media shape several public attitudes and behaviors.

Stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors in the digestive tract. Epidemiological data have shown an incidence of 11-20 per million people, the average age of diagnosis being 58 years. The location of these tumors can be anywhere on the gastrointestinal tract. The positive diagnosis is established by histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. The evolution of patients is correlated with the size of the initial tumor, the mitotic index and the topographic location. We present the case of a patient with an old anemic syndrome, considered deficiency anemia, with multiple hospitalizations, without response to substitution therapy that suddenly developed ascites. CT scan of the abdomen revealed a large abdominal tumor with jejunal origin. The positive diagnosis was established postoperatively by correlating the histopathological aspects with the immunohistochemical tests. The postoperative evolution was marked by complications, and one week later, the patient died secondary to a jejuno-colic fistula.

Colonoscopy is the “gold” standard for evaluating disease activity in ulcerative colitis (UC). An important area of research is finding a cost-efficient, non-invasive solution for estimating disease activity. We aimed to develop and validate a neural network (NN) model that uses routinely available clinical–biological variables to predict UC activity. Standard clinical–biological parameters and endoscopic Mayo score from 386 UC patient records were collected. A training set (n = 285), a test set (n = 71) and a validation set (n=30) were used for constructing and validating three NN models. The first two models predicted the active/inactive endoscopic disease status through a binary output. The third model estimated the complete endoscopic Mayo score through a categorical output. First model (with seven categorical and 13 continuous input variables) obtained an accuracy of 94.37% on the test set and 93.33% on the validation set. The second model (with 12 biological input parameters) achieved an accuracy of 88.73% on the test set and 83.33% on the validation set. The third model used the same input variables as the first model obtaining an accuracy of 76.06% on the test set and 80% on the validation set. We designed an accurate and non-invasive artificial intelligence solution to estimate disease activity, other than colonoscopy. Our NN model achieved better results than pooled performance metrics of fecal calprotectin (the best non-invasive marker to date) investigated in UC. Given these promising results, we envision introducing of a non-invasive algorithm for routinely predicting disease activity shortly.

According to new research, a possible association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and an increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) has been demonstrated, but this concern is still debatable. The purpose of this review is to investigate the link between IHD and IBD, as well as identify further research pathways that could help develop clinical recommendations for the management of IHD risk in IBD patients. There is growing evidence suggesting that disruption of the intestinal mucosal barrier in IBD is associated with the translocation of microbial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and other endotoxins into the bloodstream, which might induce a pro-inflammatory cytokines response that can lead to endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and acute cardiovascular events. Therefore, it is considered that the long-term inflammation process in IBD patients, similar to other chronic inflammatory diseases, may lead to IHD risk. The main cardiovascular risk factors, including high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, diabetes, smoking, and obesity, should be checked in all patients with IBD, and followed by strategies to reduce and manage early aggression. IBD activity is an important risk factor for acute cardiovascular events, and optimizing therapy for IBD patients should be followed as recommended in current guidelines, especially during active flares. Large long-term prospective studies, new biomarkers and scores are warranted to an optimal management of IHD risk in IBD patients.

This chapter assessed sustainability and resilience of eleven farming systems in their current situation, as well as in hypothetical future systems, using qualitative and quantitative methods. The assessment shows that current farming systems address sustainability dimensions in an unbalanced way and are characterized by poor resilience. Future resilient systems are imagined to promote environmental and social functions in the long term.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common neoplasia in the world. Circulating tumor cells (CTC) have a prognostic value and can be useful in monitoring solid neoplasia. Only one method for CTC identification has received the approval and this is the CellSearch® system based on the immunomagnetic separation. Multiple markers are used in CTC identification, as epithelial markers and cytokeratines. CTC identification in peripheral blood is associated with a worse prognostic and reduced free survival in CRC. Material and methods: We performed a systematic search in PubMed database for articles that reports the circulating tumor cells in CRC until July 2019. We selected studies in English and French and the main words used for search were ‘circulating tumor cells’, ‘colorectal cancer’, ‘colon cancer’, ‘rectal cancer’, ‘flow cytometry’, ‘peripheral blood’. We included studies with more than 10 patients, where samples were collected from the blood in relation with surgery and flow cytometry was used as analyzing technique. Results: We included 7 studies in final analysis, that showed in flow cytometry analysis a cut-off value of CTC that can vary from 2-4 CTC/ 7.5 ml peripheral blood with a sensitivity of 50.8% and specificity of 95%. Patients with positive CTC were associated with higher T stage and positive lymph nodes, with a worse overall survival (OS) and disease free survival (DFS) comparing with negative patients. Conclusion: CTC are considered to be a prognostic factor who needs more validation studies in order to be included in the clinical practice.

BACKGROUND Lung and airway involvement in inflammatory bowel disease are increasingly frequently reported either as an extraintestinal manifestation or as an adverse effect of therapy. CASE SUMMARY We report a case of a patient with ulcerative colitis controlled under mesalazine treatment who presented with chronic cough and hemoptysis. Chest computed tomography and bronchoscopy findings supported tracheal involvement in ulcerative colitis; pathology examination demonstrated an unusual eosinophil-rich inflammatory pattern, and together with clinical data, a nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis diagnosis was formulated. Full recovery was observed within days of mesalazine discontinuation. CONCLUSION Mesalazine-induced eosinophilic respiratory disorders have been previously reported, generally involving the lung parenchyma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of mesalamine-induced eosinophilic involvement in the upper airway.

This survey focuses on the problem of medicinal plants contamination due to environmental pollution produced by many different industrial activities and atmospheric deposition of some toxic compounds. This analysis is important since plants can easily absorb organic and inorganic compounds from all environmental compartments (water, soil, air), which can enter and be transferred in the trophic chain, up to humans. Medicinal plants are relevant for study in relation with their interactions with different contaminants, in particular those inorganic persistent as heavy metals, because they are used in entire world for their beneficial properties, and represent a significant part of traditional medicine. According to World Health Organization (WHO), 65-80% of world`s population depends on herbal products as the primary form of health care. Frequent use of medicinal plants to improve health, in the context of current pollution, requires special attention, since they can contain heavy metals in their structures, which can generate hazards and risks on human health throughout the subsequent consumption of contaminated medicinal plants as teas, other drinks, cosmetics.

Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients by limiting their access to medical services due to restrictions and the reorganization of the healthcare systems, which affects their quality of life (QoL). We aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the QoL of patients with IBD. Materials and Methods: We conducted a descriptive observational study, which included 90 adult patients diagnosed with IBD. The study sample consisted of two subgroups: a retrospective-pre-pandemic group (group A) and a prospective-pandemic group (group B). Group A included 45 IBD patients who were evaluated in 2018. Group B included 45 patients with confirmed diagnosis of IBD, evaluated between June and December 2021—the period of the COVID-19 pandemic (prospective), consecutively recruited. All the patients filled in a QoL assessment questionnaire—IBDQ-32. Subsequently, the two samples were comparatively assessed. Results: The average values of the IBDQ scores were significantly lower in 2021 compared to those recorded in 2018: 145.56 vs. 128.3 (p < 0.05). We also we found significant differences between the subscores: IBDQ1 (p = 0.043), IBDQ2 (p = 0.034), IBDQ3 (p = 0.045), IBDQ4 (p = 0.025). Conclusions: IBDQ scores were significantly lower in 2021 compared to 2018 (p < 0.05), showing that during the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with IBD had a more influenced QoL.

The increasing consumption of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), correlated with the fast innovation pace in this field, generates a large amount of annual waste. The current established management practices cannot keep up with it, and the results are of increased significance given the negative effects on the environment and human health. Thus, the current study aimed to analyze the environmental impact of three different scenarios of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) management, following population awareness campaigns regarding its collection in the Municipality of Iasi, Romania. Data processing was carried out considering Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology with the established functional unit for each scenario according to the collected amount. The results were quantified using the CML2001 and ReCiPe methods and showed that the highest environmental impact was obtained for scenario II (S2) (1.59 × 10−7 pers. equiv. using the CML2001 method and 32.7 pers. equiv. using the ReCiPe method), while the lowest for scenario I (S1) (6.42 × 10−8 pers. equiv. using the CML2001 method and 13.8 pers. equiv. using the ReCiPe method). The process with the highest contribution to the total environmental impact was the collection stage for all scenarios, with the exception of scenario S2, in which case the highest value was generated for the landfill process following the application of the ReCiPe method (39.93%). The current study provides value to a critical issue in the environmental area and supports the development of sustainable WEEE management processes.

This study presents the formulation and application of strippable coatings for the entrapment and removal of heavy metals (HMs) and radio nuclides (RNs). The “green” formulations involve the use of a water-based solution consisting of a synthetic biodegradable polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), together with a natural polymer (sodium alginate) as the polymer matrix and bentonite as the reinforcing agent with cation exchange capacity. Four chelating agents comprising two classical chelating agents (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid (DPTA)) and two “green” chelating agents (iminodisuccinic acid (IDS), 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC)) were used to evaluate the capacity to remove Cu, Sb, Zn, Sr, Pb, Co, and Hg from the contaminated surfaces. This decontamination method leads to the formation of a solid waste, thus eliminating the need for wastewater treatment. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy were used to comparatively evaluate the decontamination efficacy. EDX elemental mapping confirmed the entrapment of the contaminants inside the polymeric matrix.

International audience; Photo-nuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $A=60$ are studied experimentally and theoretically by the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual-photon excitation by proton scattering and real-photo absorption by a high-brilliance gamma-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photo-absorption cross sections and the decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field type models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photo-nuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated from the discrepancies between the model predictions and the experimental data. The data and the predictions will be implemented in a general reaction calculation code TALYS . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

Laser eye protection (LEP) devices may alter how colors are perceived in visual displays. This study investigates changes in color perception experienced by color-normal observers while wearing LEPs. Color perception with and without LEPs was measured using clinical color tests: City University Color Assessment and Diagnosis, Konan Medical ColorDx CCT-HD, and Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue. All LEPs induced a shift in color perception. The level of change in color perception significantly varied across LEPs. Consideration should be made when designing color displays where LEP devices are worn.

In this study, bacteria from the genus of Azotobacter, Bacillus and Pseudomonas were isolated from the roots of Phaseolus vulgaris and used as plant growth-promoting bacteria for Sinapis alba L., Brassica napus L., Amaranthus retroflexus L., Linum usitatissimum L., Panicum miliaceum L. and Rumex patientia L. plants. The results showed that all three bacteria had different effects on plants growth considering both sterile and non-sterile soil. Bacillus sp. induced the greatest influence in terms of the root length of Sinapis alba L. grown in sterile soil (with 28%), while considering non-sterile soil, Pseudomonas sp. increased the root and shoot length by 11.43% and 25.15%, respectively, compared to the blank sample. Azotobacter sp. exerted the highest beneficial influence on Brassica napus L. growth in non-sterile soil, since the root and shoot lengths were stimulated with 27.64% and 52.60%, respectively, compared to uninoculated plants. Bacillus sp. had a positive effect on the growth of the shoot length of Amaranthus retroflexus L. (with 30.30% in sterile soil and 3.69% in non-sterile soil compared to the control). Azotobacter sp. stimulated the growth of the root length of Rumex patientia L. with 35.29% in sterile soil and also the shoot length of Panicum miliaceum L. in non-sterile soil by 20.51% compared to the control. Further, the roots and shoots of Linum usitatissimum L. grown in non-sterile soil and in the presence of Pseudomonas sp. increased by 178.38% and 15.08%, respectively, compared to the flax grown in sterile soil. Statistically, according to Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) test results, not all observed differences in plants grown with the selected bacteria are significantly different compared to the control.

Tobacco consumption is the most incriminated and studied risk factor for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but other factors such as air pollution, are also linked to this disease. One of the known aspects of this chronic lung disease is that its occurrence is mainly due to the chronic inflammation of the airways. Lipid metabolism seems to be affected by smoking, with studies showing a correlation between this habit and high levels of triglycerides and low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-CHOL). Uric acid concentration is thought to reflect the antioxidative capacity of the body because it is the most abundant aqueous antioxidant. The aim of this study was to investigate the lipid profile and biochemical parameters of COPD patients in relation to smoking status. The present study was conducted between 2020 and 2021 in the Clinical Hospital of Pneumology in Iasi, Romania. Patients diagnosed with COPD (n = 52) were included and divided in three groups depending on their smoking status: non-smokers, smokers and ex-smokers. The obtained results show low correlations between COPD stages and serum uric acid concentrations (r = 0.4; p ˂ 0.05), smoking status (smoker/non-smoker/ex-smoker) and total serum cholesterol values (r = 0.45; p ˂ 0.05), but also between serum urea concentrations and the number of packs-years for the smoker/ex-smoker groups (r = 0.45, p ˂ 0.05). Smoking was associated with changes in the lipid profile of smokers and ex-smokers, along with increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-CHOL) and low serum uric acid values.
