Abstract

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the first of a kind megajoule-class laser with 192 beams capable of delivering over 1.8 MJ and 500TW of 351nm light [1], [2]. It has been commissioned and operated since 2009 to support a wide range of missions including the study of inertial confinement fusion, high energy density physics, material science, and laboratory astrophysics. In order to advance our understanding, and enable short-pulse multi-frame radiographic experiments of dense cores of cold material, the generation of very hard x-rays above 50 keV is necessary. X-rays with such characteristics can be efficiently generated with high intensity laser pulses above 1017 W/cm² [3]. The Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) [4] which is currently being commissioned on the NIF will provide eight, 1 ps to 50 ps, adjustable pulses with up to 1.7 kJ each to create x-ray point sources enabling dynamic, multi-frame x-ray backlighting. This paper will provide an overview of the ARC system and report on the laser performance tests conducted with a stretched-pulse up to the main laser output and their comparison with the results of our laser propagation codes.

Abstract

The technical challenges and motivations for high-energy, short-pulse generation with the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and possibly other large-scale Nd : glass lasers are reviewed. High-energy short-pulse generation (multi-kilojoule, picosecond pulses) will be possible via the adaptation of chirped pulse amplification laser techniques on NIF. Development of metre-scale, high-efficiency, high-damage-threshold final optics is a key technical challenge. In addition, deployment of high energy petawatt (HEPW) pulses on NIF is constrained by existing laser infrastructure and requires new, compact compressor designs and short-pulse, fibre-based, seed-laser systems. The key motivations for HEPW pulses on NIF is briefly outlined and includes high-energy, x-ray radiography, proton beam radiography, proton isochoric heating and tests of the fast ignitor concept for inertial confinement fusion.

Abstract

In an experimental study of the physics of fast ignition the characteristics of the hot electron source at laser intensities up to 10(to the 20th power) Wcm{sup -2} and the heating produced at depth by hot electrons have been measured. Efficient generation of hot electrons but less than the anticipated heating have been observed.

Abstract

A review of recent progress on the design of a diagnostic system proposed for ignition target experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) will be presented. This diagnostic package contains an extensive suite of optical, x ray, gamma ray, and neutron diagnostics that enable measurements of the performance of both direct and indirect driven NIF targets. The philosophy used in designing all of the diagnostics in the set has emphasized redundant and independent measurement of fundamental physical quantities relevant to the operation of the NIF target. A unique feature of these diagnostics is that they are being designed to be capable of operating in the high radiation, electromagnetic pulse, and debris backgrounds expected on the NIF facility. The diagnostic system proposed can be categorized into three broad areas: laser characterization, hohlraum characterization, and capsule performance diagnostics. The operating principles of a representative instrument from each class of diagnostic employed in this package will be summarized and illustrated with data obtained in recent prototype diagnostic tests.

Abstract

A tentative schedule of experiments for the ignition campaign on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed. These experiments will be used to validate beam pointing and balance, to tune time history and symmetry of drive of NIF hohlraums, and to implode subignition and igniting targets. The initial target diagnostics are designed to validate beam pointing and to demonstrate the properties of the hohlraums.

Abstract

We demonstrate the hohlraum radiation temperature and symmetry required for ignition-scale inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions. Cryogenic gas-filled hohlraums with 2.2 mm-diameter capsules are heated with unprecedented laser energies of 1.2 MJ delivered by 192 ultraviolet laser beams on the National Ignition Facility. Laser backscatter measurements show that these hohlraums absorb 87% to 91% of the incident laser power resulting in peak radiation temperatures of T(RAD)=300 eV and a symmetric implosion to a 100 μm diameter hot core.

Abstract

The Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) Program and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has made substantial progress in understanding the details of the radiation drive and the dynamics of capsules imploded by the Nova laser. A detailed understanding, validated by Nova experiments of the crucial physics for implosions is necessary before a new facility is started. A National Academy of Science Review Committee on ICF has recently endorsed a 12 point technical contract for the Nova program. Recent experiments have achieved a substantial number of these goals. A decrease in the level of plasma instabilities has been demonstrated by the use of phase plates. Neutron measurements have been used to demonstrate high densities in well understood implosions. A detailed understanding of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the ablation front of x-ray driven planar foil targets with large hydrodynamic growth factors has been proven. X-ray spectroscopy has been used to demonstrate a high fuel density and an improvement in the compression ratio of targets when a shaped pulse is used to keep a pusher on a low rho-r trajectory.

Abstract

We have developed a hybrid Ti:sapphire-Nd:glass laser system that produces more than 1500 TW (1.5 PW) of peak power. The system produces 660 J of power in a compressed 440+/-20 fs pulse by use of 94-cm master diffraction gratings. Focusing to an irradiance of7x10(20) W/cm (2) is achieved by use of a Cassegrainian focusing system employing a plasma mirror.

Abstract

Chirped-pulse amplification applied to broad-bandwidth solid-state lasers has created a revolution in the production and use of terawatt and now petawatt class lasers.1,2 The concepts and technology contributing to this revolution have evolved continuously since the early 1970’s. Following the grating compressor work of Treacy3, Bischell4 and others described the application of chirped-pulse amplification to Nd:Glass lasers. This was followed by a large amount of work on fiber-grating pulse compression for communication research.5 In 1985, Strickland and Mourou combined many of these ideas into the first practical demonstration of chirped-pulse amplification with a solid-state laser.6 Following this initial demonstration, rapid developments in technology such as the stretcher design of Martinez7 led to small scale systems capable of terawatt8 and multiterawatt pulses.9–11 Occurring in parallel with the development of chirped-pulse amplification technology using Nd:Glass lasers, was the development of the new laser material, titanium-doped sapphire. The commercial availability of this unique laser material dramatically propelled the revolution in CPA based solid-state lasers. An overwhelming majority of CPA lasers now employ Ti:sapphire either throughout the entire laser system or at least as the oscillator material.13 These early developments and the large amount of effort that has gone into the laser technology in recent years have culminated in high pulse energy systems producing pulses with a peak power of 125 TW14 and very short-pulse systems producing multiterawatt pulses which only contain a few optical cycles.15–18 Here, we describe the limits of CPA technology in the context of a large scale system producing pulses with a peak power exceeding 1.25 petawatts (1250 TW).

Abstract

We recently demonstrated the production of over a petawatt of peak power in the Nova/Petawatt Laser Facility, generating > 600 J in approximately 440 fs. The Petawatt Laser Project was initiated to develop the capability to test the fast ignitor concept for inertial confinement fusion, and to provide a unique capability in high energy density physics. The laser was designed to produce near kJ pulses with a pulse duration adjustable between 0.5 and 20 ps. At the shortest pulse lengths, this laser is expected to surpass 1021 W/cm2 when focused later this year. Currently, this system is limited to 600 J pulses in a 46.3- cm beam. Expansion of the beam to 58 cm, with the installation of 94-cm gratings, will enable 1 kJ operation. Target experiments with petawatt pulses will be possible either integrated with Nova in the 10 beam target chamber or as a stand alone system in an independent, dedicated chamber. Focusing the beam onto a target will be accomplished using an on axis parabolic mirror. The design of a novel targeting system enabling the production of ultrahigh contrast pulses and an easily variable effective focal length is also described.

Abstract

Some of the major components of laser systems used for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) are the large aperture mirrors which direct the path of the laser. These mirrors are typically supported by systems which consist of mirror mounts, mirror enclosures, superstructures, and foundations. Stability design considerations for the support systems of large aperture mirrors have been developed based on the experience of designing and evaluating similar systems at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Examples of the systems developed at LLNL include Nova, the Petawatt laser, Beamlet, and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The structural design of support systems of large aperture mirrors has typically been controlled by stability considerations in order for the large laser system to meet its performance requirements for alignment and positioning. This paper will discuss the influence of stability considerations and will provide guidance on the structural design and evaluation of mirror support systems in ICF lasers so that this information can be used on similar systems.

We have demonstrated a Ti:sapphire/Nd:glass laser system that produces up to 51 J of energy in 395-fs pulses (125TW). Focusing at f/3 to a 2.5-times diffraction-limited spot results in a peak irradiance greater than 10(20) W/cm(2) . Our 40-cm-diameter gold diffraction gratings have a damage threshold of 0.42 J/cm(2) for 320-fs pulses.

Abstract

We have developed a fast, sensitive neutron detector for recording the fusion reaction-rate history of inertial-confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. The detector is based on the fast rise-time of a commercial plastic scintillator (BC-422) and has a response < 25 ps FWHM. A thin piece of scintillator material acts as a neutron-to-light converter. A zoom lens images light from the scintillator surface to a high-speed (15 ps) optical streak camera for recording. The zoom lens allows the scintillator to be positioned between 1 and 50 cm from a target. The camera simultaneously records an optical fiducial pulse which allows the camera time base to be calibrated relative to the incident laser power. Bursts of x rays formed by focusing 20 ps, 2.5 TW laser pulses onto gold disk targets demonstrate the detector resolution to be < 25 ps. Abstract

Summary form only given. A National Academy of Science Review Committee on inertial confinement fusion has endorsed a 12-point technical contract for the Nova program. Recent experiments have achieved a substantial number of these goals. The ten-beam laser has now been operated with the rms power balance among the ten beams as low as 8% in the foot and 5% in the peak of a high-energy, temporally shaped pulse. A decrease in the level of plasma instabilities from large scale length, low density plasma has been demonstrated by the use of random phase plates. Neutron measurements have been used to demonstrate high densities in well-understood implosions. A detailed understanding of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability at the ablation front of X-ray drive planar foil targets, with large hydrodynamic growth factors, has been demonstrated.

Abstract

We have characterized the Advanced Radiographic Capability injection laser system and demonstrated that it meets performance requirements for upcoming National Ignition Facility fusion experiments. Pulse compression was achieved with a scaled down replica of the meter-scale grating ARC compressor and sub-ps pulse duration was demonstrated at the Joule-level.

Abstract

In recent years the measurements of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) target dynamics using x-ray imaging have grown in both quality and quantity. One instrument being used increasingly at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Nova facility is the Gated X-Ray Imager. This imager uses a microchannel plate as detector, amplifier, and gating element to allow x-ray photographs with aperture times under 100 ps. In anticipation of as many as 16 imagers installed on Nova within the next year, an electronic control system has been developed. This system simplifies operator interface when in a "stand-alone" mode while synchronizing with the Nova sequence clock when in the "shot" mode. The system is also expected to be fully integrated into the Nova computer system within the next year. Abstract

A platform for analysis of material properties under extreme conditions, where a sample is bathed in radiation with a high temperature, is under development. Depositing maximum laser energy into a small, high-Z enclosure produces this hot environment. Such targets were recently included in an experimental campaign using the first four of the 192 beams of the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. J. Hogan, Fusion Technol. 26, 755 (1994)], under construction at the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. These targets demonstrate good laser coupling, reaching a radiation temperature of 340 eV. In addition, there is a unique wavelength dependence of the Raman backscattered light that is consistent with Brillouin backscatter of Raman forward scatter [A. B. Langdon and D. E. Hinkel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 015003 (2002)]. Finally, novel diagnostic capabilities indicate that 20% of the direct backscatter from these reduced-scale targets is in the polarization orthogonal to that of the incident light.

Abstract

A neutron spectroscopy system for use at Nova is currently under construction. It consists of 960 channels of neutron sensitive liquid scintillator detectors coupled to photomultiplier tubes. Each channel also has a discriminator, ADC, and TDC to allow measurement of neutron arrival time and pulse size. This facility will primarily be used to measure time‐of‐flight spectra for secondary and tertiary neutrons. Details of the detector design will be presented as well as a brief overview of the proposed use. This work was performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under contract No. W‐7405‐ENG‐48.

Abstract

Experiments to obtain time‐resolved, soft‐x‐ray emission from laser‐driven plasmas are succinctly described. The spectra (0.19 keV ≤ hν ≤ 1.3 keV) at various times have been deconvolved and energy integrated to obtain time‐resolved yields from Au disk targets. The temporal profiles of the total thermal x‐ray output power follow the overall laser temporal shape but do not show the high‐frequency fluctuation observed in the laser pulse. The behavior of the ratio of the instantaneous x‐ray yields over the laser absorption is studied. The studies were done at the LLNL Nova laser facility. Single pulses and pulses in ‘‘picket fence’’ configuration were used to heat the gold targets.

Abstract

The neutron emission time for laser‐driven inertial confinement fusion targets is determined from data recorded with fast neutron and optical detector systems. Two types of neutron detectors are used. Radiation‐induced conductivity devices have a 130‐ps FWHM response and are sensitive to targets with yields greater than 5×1010 DT neutrons. They measure the average neutron emission time with a precision of ±50 ps and are fast enough to measure the neutron production rate within a target core as a function of time. Plastic scintillators coupled to microchannel‐plate photomultiplier tubes have a 1.2‐ns FWHM response and measure the average neutron emission time with a precision of ±75 ps for targets with yields greater than 106 neutrons. Streak cameras record the incident laser power. Optical fiducial signals that are injected into each detector are used to cross time between the detector systems. Abstract

The possibility of imploding small capsules to produce mini-fusion explosions was explored soon after the first thermonuclear explosions in the early 1950s. Various technologies have been pursued to achieve the focused power and energy required for laboratory-scale fusion. Each technology has its own challenges. For example, electron and ion beams can deliver the large amounts of energy but must contend with Coulomb repulsion forces that make focusing these beams a daunting challenge. The demonstration of the first laser in 1960 provided a new option. Energy from laser beams can be focused and deposited within a small volume; the challenge became whether a practical laser system can be constructed that delivers the power and energy required while meeting all other demands for achieving a high-density, symmetric implosion.
