Abstract

An investigation plan of different clustering and molecular states in neutron rich isotopes of Lithium, Beryllium, Boron and Carbon, in the context of an experimental campaign at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, is presented. High statistics and new information on known states and study on new states will be possible thanks to the high intensities available for the exotic beams, delivered by the FRAISE facility and thanks to the opportunity of using very performing experimental apparatus, as well as the detectors CHIMERA, FARCOS, and NArCOS. Among these, the new hodoscope NArCOS, by detecting with high efficiency neutrons and providing high energy and angular resolutions, will allow also a precise study of reaction channels characterized by neutron emission.

Abstract

We present results of barrier distribution measurements for $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}+^{90,92}\mathrm{Zr}$ systems by the backscattering method. The measurements were done at near-barrier beam energies of 68--88.5 MeV (in the laboratory frame) at six angles. A strong discrepancy between experimental results and the predictions of the standard coupled channels calculations was observed. To test the hypothesis that this discrepancy may be due to partial energy dissipation caused by coupling to many target noncollective levels, we performed calculations using the coupled channels plus random matrix theory ($\mathrm{CC}+\mathrm{RMT}$) model. The comparison of calculations with experimental results gives qualitative support of the hypothesis; however, quantitatively the agreement is not as good as in the case of the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ projectile.

Abstract

The γ-decays of 12C excited levels (the Hoyle state 0+ at 7.65 MeV and the 9.64 MeV 3) are essential for its production in the universe. We present here a new attempt to precisely measure such γ-decay probabilities. The measurement was performed at INFN-LNS in Catania using the 4π CHIMERA multidetector. In order to measure these low probability decay-channels we performed 4-fold coincidence measurements. The 12C target nuclei were excited by using a beam of 64 MeV α-particles produced by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) of INFN-LNS. The scattered α-particles and the 12C recoils were detected and identified by? E-E and ToF methods using CHIMERA telescopes. The two emitted γ-rays in the decay chain were detected and identified by using the second stage of the telescopes, CsI(Tl) scintillators, by means of fast-slow and rise time techniques. Kinematics and energy-momentum conservation laws were used to constrain the data analysis. Also the 3-α decay channel probability was measured. Such a simultaneous measurement of all known decay channels was useful to reduce the systematic errors. Preliminary results of the data analysis are reported.

Abstract

The motivation of the present paper is to study the performance of EJ 299-33 scintillator in online and off-line analysis in high rate scattering for nuclear reaction experiments performed with heavy ions. An experiment was carried out inside the CHIMERA chamber using 24Mg beams at 71.5 MeV and 81 MeV impinging on 92ZrO2 target. The plastic scintillator was backed by a photomultiplier tube and the anode pulses were digitized through 100 MHz GET electronics for the purpose of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) studies. Performances of the plastic scintillator have been tested with respect to PSD capabilities and energy spectra analysis under beam irradiations in a high background environment.

Abstract

FARCOS is a modular detection system intended to boost the capacity of 4π detectors towards correlation measurements. The final FARCOS system will be composed of 20 telescopes, each formed by two Si layers of 32-ch orthogonal Double Sided Silicon Strip Detectors and one calorimeter stage composed by 4 CsI(Tl) tronco-pyramidal scintillator crystals readout by a Si photodiode. The paper focuses on the first application of the FARCOS detection array in the present configuration of 10 telescopes in a real experiment, the CHIFAR experiment and discusses the main instrumental features relevant for the experiments.

Abstract

The FARCOS (Femtoscope ARray for Correlation and Spectroscopy) collaboration is finally going to instrument the first batch of 10-12 telescopes. They are capable of reconstructing the particle’s momentum with a high degree of precision and of performing correlation measurements of Light Charged Particles (LCPs) and of LCPs and Intermediate Mass Fragments thanks to the very good energy and angular and resolution. Each telescope features a sensitive area of 6.4 × 6.4 cm2 and is composed of three detection stages: two Si layers and a CsI(Tl) calorimeter. The FARCOS cluster modularity allows the arrangement in different configurations, depending on the physics case one wants to address. The final system will be a modular assembly of 20 telescopes. The total number of readout channels for the final FARCOS system is 2560 channels for the silicon layers and 80 channels for the scintillators. In this paper, we focus on the FARCOS basic module and system architecture and illustrate its performance as assessed in test beams in true experimental conditions.

Abstract

It is known that the low-energy E1 strength, known as the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR), can be excited by both isovector and isoscalar probes. In this work, we report on the results of an experiment, carried out at the LNS-INFN in Catania, with the aim to study the Pygmy Dipole Resonance induced in the 68Ni nucleus through the interaction with a 12C isoscalar target. The CHIMERA multidetector and the FARCOS array were used to detect, respectively, γ rays and charged particles. Details on the experimental set-up, data analysis and results are reported.

Abstract

In this paper we briefly discuss about a novel application of the IMF- IMF correlation function in the physics case of heavy projectile-like (PLF) binary fission-like massive splitting in heavy ion collisions at Fermi energy. In particular, results are shown for the reverse kinematics reaction 124Sn+64Ni at 35 AMeV that has been investigated by using the forward part of CHIMERA multi-detector. Transport CoMD simulations are compared with the data. The main analysis was performed as a function of the charge asymmetry of the decay channel. The coexistence of dynamical and statistical components as a function of the charge asymmetry of the binary breakup is clearly evidenced. We show that the IMF-IMF correlation functions, when coupled with transport calculations, can be used to pin down the timescale of the fragments production and consequently the relevant ingredients of the in medium effective interaction. Efforts are being planned to extend the method to different reaction mechanisms and nuclear systems and, also, to compare the data with different transport theory simulations.

Abstract

An experimental study was carried out on buildings constructed in the 1980s adopting vertical envelopes with a glass wool insulation layer in the cavity. The aims of this study are to evaluate the insulation conservation state after 25 years, to assess the actual indoor thermal comfort and to compare different retrofit interventions. The research included the following phases: laboratory tests on insulation samples to quantify any changes of morphological, chemical, physical and thermal proprieties of the material; detailed on-site monitoring in order to analyze the thermal comfort conditions; dynamic thermal simulations to assess the impact of different retrofit scenarios to satisfy the limits imposed by the current energy saving standard. The results show that the glass fibers and the binder were affected by a degradation process thus increasing both water absorption and thermal conductivity; thermal comfort and consumptions were not influenced by the insulation aging; the most effective retrofit is the introduction of an external insulation layer.

Abstract

The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

Abstract

A new method to extract high resolution angular distributions from kinematical coincidence measurements in binary reactions is presented. Kinematic is used to extract the center of mass angular distribution from the measured energy spectrum of light particles. Results obtained in the case of 10Be+p-->9Be+d reaction measured with the CHIMERA detector are shown. Abstract

Directed and elliptic flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for the reaction 197Au+197Au at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy within the ASY-EOS experimental campaign at the GSI laboratory. The detection system consisted of the Large Area Neutron Detector LAND, combined with parts of the CHIMERA multidetector, of the ALADIN Time-of-flight Wall, and of the Washington-University Microball detector. The latter three arrays were used for the event characterization and reaction-plane reconstruction. In addition, an array of triple telescopes, KRATTA, was used for complementary measurements of the isotopic composition and flows of light charged particles. From the comparison of the elliptic flow ratio of neutrons with respect to charged particles with UrQMD predictions, a value \gamma = 0.72 \pm 0.19 is obtained for the power-law coefficient describing the density dependence of the potential part in the parametrization of the symmetry energy. It represents a new and more stringent constraint for the regime of supra-saturation density and confirms, with a considerably smaller uncertainty, the moderately soft to linear density dependence deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data. Abstract

Within the dinuclear system model the charge, mass, and isotopic distributions of the products in the reactions $^{78}\mathrm{Kr}+^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ and $^{86}\mathrm{Kr}+^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ are predicted at bombarding energy 10 MeV/nucleon. The heavy-ion phase-space exploration code is applied to take into consideration the pre-equilibrium emission of light particles. The competition is treated between complete fusion followed by the decay of compound nucleus and quasifission channels. The possible explanation of the odd-even staggering in the yield of the final reaction products at high excitation energies is discussed.

Abstract

Be10 and C16 spectroscopy has been investigated by analyzing their breakup events on CH2 and CD2 targets. Breakup fragments have been detected by means of the CHIMERA detector. In particular, we investigated cluster decays of Be10 in He4+He6 and of C16 in He6+Be10 and He4+He6+He6. From the relative energy analysis of breakup fragments, we investigate the spectroscopy of excited states of projectile nuclei. In the Be10 case we observe known states at 9.51, 10.16, 10.6, and 11.8 MeV. Further, we suggest the existence of a new state at 13.5 MeV, possibly 6+ as indicated from angular correlation analysis. The relative energy (Erel+Eth) spectrum of C16, reconstructed starting from He6+Be10 correlations, shows a peak at about 20.6 MeV, probably related to the existence of an high-lying excited state. Non-vanishing yields are also seen in the triple coincidences He4+He6+He6.

Abstract

The dependence of the CsI(Tl) scintillation time constants and intensities on the particle ionization profile is at the basis of the Charge and Mass identification technique for Light Charged Products in Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics multi-detector arrays. The possibility of storing the digitized waveforms in true beam experiments allows performing further offline analyses and makes available a data set related to the interaction of different particle types in a wide energy range.

Abstract

This study prospectively compared the diagnostic capabilities of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with conventional defecography (CD) in outlet obstruction syndrome.Nineteen consecutive patients with clinical symptoms of outlet obstruction underwent pelvic MR examination. The MR imaging protocol included static T2-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE) images in the sagittal, axial and coronal planes; dynamic midsagittal T2-weighted single-shot (SS)-FSE and fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (FIESTA) cine images during contraction, rest, straining and defecation. MR images (including and then excluding the evacuation phase) were compared with CD, which is considered the reference standard.Comparison between CD and MR with evacuation phase (MRWEP) showed no significant differences in sphincter hypotonia, dyssynergia, rectocele or rectal prolapse and significant differences in descending perineum. Comparison between CD and MR without evacuation phase (MRWOEP) showed no significant differences in sphincter hypotonia, dyssynergia or enterocele but significant differences in rectocele, rectal prolapse and descending perineum. Comparison between MRWEP and MRWOEP showed no significant differences in sphincter hypotonia, dyssynergia, enterocele or descending perineum but significant differences in rectocele, rectal prolapse, peritoneocele, cervical cystoptosis and hysteroptosis.MR imaging provides morphological and functional study of pelvic floor structures and may offer an imaging tool complementary to CD in multicompartment evaluation of the pelvis. An evacuation phase is mandatory.

Abstract

Purpose A multi-centre study to evaluate performances of PET/CT scanners and to draft a unique QC protocol for five departments was performed. The variability in quantitation of PET acceptance tests was investigated to define acceptance limits of these data establishing reference values and new tolerances to compare with the technical specifications provided by the manufacturer. Methods Spatial resolution, scatter fraction, sensitivity, count rate loss and random coincidence estimation, Noise Equivalent Count Rate (NECR) and Image quality parameters were calculated following NEMA NU2-2012 [1] standard on the new PET/CT scanners Biograph mCT Siemens installed in five different nuclear medicine departments. For each parameter, we assessed the consistency of the related data. Results The acceptance test results demonstrated comparable output for all parameters investigated. A summarize schematic results were proposed and their relative variations and tolerances were discussed. As expected, the spatial resolution showed the least variability amongst all features related to its operator-independent preparation and strictly depending on equipment construction. Conversely, the sensitivity was the most variable parameter correlated to very low activity concentration required by NEMA protocol. We reported, for one scanner, an unexpected value in the count rate accuracy test (relative mean error @ peak NEC), despite the consistency of the values of peak NEC rate obtained. Conclusions Based on this investigation, new tolerances of performance measurements were calculated and suggested employing a common platform for quality assurance procedures to minimize variability of physical reference values. The results showed the need for a multi-centre inter-comparison especially in the tests without the tolerances of technical specifications suggested by the manufacturer.

Abstract

A new front-end based on digital GET electronics has been adopted for the readout of the CsI(Tl) detectors of the CHIMERA 4π multi-detector and for the new modular Femtoscopy Array for Correlation and Spectroscopy (FARCOS). It is expected that the coupling of CHIMERA with the FARCOS array, featuring high angular and energy resolution, and the adoption of the new digital electronics will be well suited for improving specific future data analysis, with the full shape storage of the signals, in the field of heavy ion reactions with stable and exotic beams around the Fermi energies domain. Integration of the GET electronics with CHIMERA and FARCOS devices and with the local analog data acquisition will be briefly discussed. We present some results from previous experimental tests and from the first in-beam experiment (Hoyle-Gamma) with the coupled GET+CHIMERA data acquisition.

Abstract

We present preliminary results of barrier height distribution measurements for 24Mg+90 ; 92Zr systems. The experiment was performed at LNS INFN in Catania with the CHIMERA detector system and a 24Mg beam accelerated by Tandem MP. The measurements were done at the near-barrier beam energies of 68-88.5 MeV. A discrepancy between experimental results and the predictions of Coupled Channels (CC) calculations was observed. We suggest that this discrepancy may be due to a cumulative effect of many individual weak channels such as non-collective excitations of the target, which cannot be fully implemented in practical CC calculations of a standard form.

Abstract

We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. Abstract

Alpha2-Heremans-Schmid glycoprotein (AHSG; fetuin), a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors involved in vascular pathology and bone metabolism, has been reported to be reduced in patients with atherosclerosis and medial calcification related to end stage renal disease or dialysis. No data on fetuin in patients with peripheral artery disease associated with low bone mass and normal renal function are available in the literature. In the present study we evaluated serum fetuin concentrations, bone mass, and markers of bone turnover in patients with atherosclerosis of peripheral vessels and normal kidney function.Ninety consecutive patients with evidence of atherosclerotic plaques at the common carotid or femoral artery were studied. Severity grade of disease was documented by ultrasound measurement of intima-media thickness (IMT). Fasting serum levels of fetuin were measured by sandwich enzyme immunoassay.The mean patient serum concentration of fetuin was 57.68+/-13.6 ng/ml, significantly higher than that of control subjects (41.6+/-7.6 ng/ml; p0.001). The mean serum concentration of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) were 8.4+/-2.3 microg/l, significantly lower than controls (13.6+/-1.6 microg/l; p0.001). Fetuin was correlated with IMT (r=0.8530; p0.0001) and inversely correlated with BAP (r=-0.5503; p0.0001). Patients had a vertebral and femoral bone mass significantly lower than controls.This study documented for the first time that, in patients with atherosclerosis of peripheral vessels, serum fetuin levels were higher than in healthy subjects, and correlated with the severity of disease; further studies are required to analyse the role of AHSG as an independent predictor of atherosclerotic disease and low bone mass in patients with normal renal function.

Abstract

Data from the experiment on the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV are analyzed with an aim to find signatures of exotic nuclear configurations such as toroid-shaped objects. The experimental data are compared with predictions of the ETNA code dedicated to look for such configurations and with the QMD model. A novel criterion of selecting events possibly resulting from the formation of exotic freeze-out configurations, "the efficiency factor", is tested. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions may indicate for the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems.

Abstract

Background: In heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies the production of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) is due to different reaction mechanisms and different time scales, ranging from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from the equilibrated system.Purpose: We compare the IMF statistical and dynamical emission probabilities in collisions of a neutron-rich $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}+^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ system and a neutron-poor $^{112}\mathrm{Sn}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$ system at the laboratory energy of 35 $A$ MeV.Method: The IMFs production mechanism in semiperipheral reactions has been investigated in our previous works. In this paper, the analysis is expanded for the same set of data and production cross sections have been evaluated for dynamical and statistical emission in a coherent way for light and heavy fragments.Results: The data analysis has evidenced a strong competition between dynamical and statistical emission mechanisms. Probability of the dynamical emission of IMFs is strongly influenced by the ($N/Z$) ratio of the colliding system.Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the statistical emission is equally probable for the two systems, while the dynamical emission is enhanced for the neutron-rich system, especially for heavy fragments ($Z\ensuremath{\ge}6$). The observed effect points at a high sensitivity of the prompt-dynamical emission to the ($N/Z$) ratio of a given system.

Abstract

Stiffness following total knee arthroplasty is a disabling complication1-7. Although some predisposing factors have been identified, in most cases the exact etiology of the stiffness cannot be discerned. The reported prevalence of this complication has ranged widely from 1.3% to 12%1,8-10. The difference in rate may be due in part to varied definitions of stiffness11. Several factors affecting the postoperative range of motion that have been identified include the preoperative range of motion, contracture of the extensor mechanism and capsular structure, the preoperative diagnosis, personality of the patient, lack of patient compliance with the rehabilitation protocol, and the patient's threshold for pain12-18. Technical factors, such as overstuffing the patellofemoral joint, mismatch of the flexion and extension gaps, inaccurate ligament balancing, component malpositioning, use of oversized components, joint-line elevation, excessive tightening of the extensor mechanism, and underresection of the patella have also been implicated1,19. Various management protocols have been proposed to address this complication. This exhibit presents our institutional experience with the management of stiffness following total knee arthroplasty. We report the findings of a case-control study that was designed to predict the factors responsible for stiffness after total knee arthroplasty. In addition, the results of an ongoing basic-science study attempting to unravel the molecular mechanism of arthrofibrosis following total knee arthroplasty are presented. We also provide the outline of our current treatment strategy for the management of stiffness following total knee arthroplasty. Abstract

Collisions of a very heavy 197 Au + 197 Au system have been studied at an energy of 15 MeV/nucleon with the aim to investigate a possible change of the energy dissipation mechanism from one-body dissipation (presumably dominating at low excitation energies) to two-body dissipation. The experiment was carried out in 4π geometry using the CHIMERA multidetector array. A class of ternary events satisfying nearly complete balance of mass numbers was selected. Preliminary results suggest that the selected ternary events represent mostly prompt ternary partitions of the colliding system, in which the lightest fragment is quite massive. In the light of theoretical predictions of Cârjan, Sierk and Nix this result may imply that the observed ternary reactions are driven by the two-body dissipation mechanism already at 15 MeV/nucleon.

Abstract

Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons, and α -particles, have been measured at very forward angles ( 0.7 ° ⩽ θ lab ⩽ 7 ° ), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission in E / A = 44 and 77 MeV 40 Ar + 27 Al collisions. The observed correlations are similar for the two reactions at E / A = 44 and 77 MeV, except for peaks originating from resonance decays, which are larger at the lower bombarding energy. Particle-velocity gated correlation functions are presented, and possible implications on the time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF, are discussed.

Abstract

A 100 Msamples/s 14-bit sampling analog-to-digital converter has been used to perform digital pulse-shape acquisition of signals collected from CHIMERA telescopes. Two different kinds of tests have been carried out to check the performances. The signals from a typical CHIMERA detection cell have been collected using both a standard CHIMERA electronic chain up to the amplifier, and a very simple analog front end, basically reduced to the preamplifier. The obtained on-beam and on-line results are presented.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; Current pulses induced in a silicon detector by 10 different heavy ion species at known energies around 10 AMeV have been sampled in time at high frequency. Their individual average shapes are quite well reproduced by a fit procedure based on our recent charge carrier collection treatment which considers the progressive extraction of the electrons and holes from the high carrier density zone along the ionizing particle track. This region is assumed to present a supplementary dielectric polarization and consequently a disturbe delectric field.The influence of the nature of the heavy ion on the values of the three fit parameters is analyzed.

Abstract

The CHIMERA 4/spl pi/ detector trigger system is described. The trigger decisions are based on a combination of geometrical multiplicity of detected particles and other logic signals. The trigger can manage the buffer memory of the used analog to digital converters. This allows performance of parallel data conversion and readout and substantial improvement of the acquisition system dead-time performances. The trigger module generates all the necessary gate signals for the converters and the control signals necessary to synchronize the readout. It also allows the remote control of the whole system.

We have built and tested a computational unit for on-line processing of special algorithms to be embedded in the central processing unit VERSAmodule Eurocard (CPU VME)-crate of the CHIMERA data acquisition system. The computational unit consists of a number of VME digital signal processor (DSP)-based commercial boards delivering 720 MFlops/board.

Abstract

CORRELATION experiment has been performed at INFN-LNS of Catania, using the 4pi multi-detector CHIMERA, with the aim of exploring correlations between two and multi light particle produced in 12C+24Mg collisions at 35 AMeV. Particular attention has been paid to the decay mechanisms of Hoyle state, an excited resonant state of 12C produced via the triple- alfa process and characterized by a pronounced molecular like structure with three-alfa particles. The study of the Hoyle state is essential for nucleosynthesis, but it also represents a clearly isolated state that can be studied as a three-alfa cluster system.

Abstract

CHIMERA is a 4π multidetector for charged particles available at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN‐LNS). A new method to measure the time scale of the emission of nuclear fragments is described, together with some applications in the field of the isospin dynamics of heavy‐ion collisions. Competition between fusion‐like and binary reactions near the energy threshold for nuclear multifragmentation is discussed. Opportunities are pointed out to use the detector at low and intermediate energies using the kinematical‐coincidence method.

Abstract

This contribution presents some recent results relative to the studies of isospin- asymmetric nuclear matter in experiments using the 4π detector CHIMERA and the beams delivered by the Superconductive Cyclotron at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania. In particular, we report the results of the experiments named Reverse and Isodec, both included in the EXOCHIM activity supported by the CNSIII of INFN. In the Isodec experiment, the two systems 78Kr+40Ca (neutron poor) and 86Kr+48Ca (neutron rich) at 10A MeV were studied, looking at the competition between the various disintegration decay paths of medium mass compound nuclei, formed by fusion processes and at the isospin influence on the decay process. The results show the presence of a relaxed component in the reaction mechanism, the evidence of staggering effects in the Z distributions, as well as different isotopic composition and neutron enrichment for the reaction products in the two systems. In the Reverse experiment, mass asymmetric projectile-target combinations 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni were investigated at 35A MeV. We provide evidence that the Dynamical Fission process is about two times more probable than the equilibrated (statistical) Fission one in the neutron rich 124Sn+64Ni system with respect to the 112Sn+58Ni neutron poor one. The observed difference in the strength of the dynamical effects could arise from the difference in the entrance channel Isospin (N/Z) content.

Abstract

Biological vision processes are at the basis of many studies in the image-processing field. In this context, neural networks developed by S. Grossberg constitute an interesting approach. The paper presents a novel method for the automatic analysis of scatter plots from CHIMERA experimental data based on Grossberg's pre-attentive neural systems. The design and implementation of a system developed for this purpose are illustrated. The proposed method yields satisfactory results also in very noisy cases.

Abstract

In nuclear physics at intermediate energies, the use of multidetector arrays consisting of thousands of detectors is customary. This paper presents a novel approach to the automatic classification of data collected by the 4/spl pi/ detector CHIMERA, constituted by 1192 telescopes of a thin silicon transparent detector coupled to a thick CsI(Tl) scintillator. The method is based on spatial density data processing and produces frequency distributions of the most significant physical parameters. These one-dimensional spectra can be more easily analyzed than the standard two-dimensional scatter plots. With respect to manual or semiautomatic procedures, presently used for data analysis, our method offers the advantages of drastic time reduction and unbiased criteria for cluster identification. The proposed method can be successfully used in both off-line data analysis and multidetector stability control.

Abstract

Mass measurements of the N = Z nuclei 80Zr, 76Sr, 68Se were performed for the first time and a new measurement was obtained for 80Y, using the second cyclotron CSS2 of GANIL as a high-resolution spectrometer. Ions around N = Z were produced by fusion-evaporation in the inverse 58Ni (4.32 MeV A) + 24Mg and 12C reactions. New masses were measured by a time-of-flight method, with a precision of 2 · 10-6, by using well-known masses as references. Study of the double binding energy difference δV np is then performed leading to a strong N = Z Wigner effect around N = Z = 40. Knowledge of new masses in this region also plays a crucial role in the modelling of the astrophysical rp process.

Abstract

The mass-measurement programme at GANIL aims to measure the masses of heavy nuclei close to the N = Z line which is the ideal region to study neutron-proton pairing. An original direct time-of-flight mass-measurement method was developed at GANIL which uses the CSS2 cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The masses of ions of A = 68, 76, 80 and 100 have been measured with a precision of a few 10-6. Mass measurements will be performed with the new CIME cyclotron of SPIRAL using a similar method based on the measurement of the phase of the accelerated ions for different radio-frequencies. A recently approved experiment will help develop this new technique and aims to measure the mass of 31 Ar radioactive nuclei with a precision of 10-6.

International audience; Isospin dependence of dynamical and thermodynamical physical quantities observed in the reactions 40Ca + 40,48Ca and 40Ca + 46Ti at 25 MeV/nucleon has been analyzed by means of the CHIMERA multi-detector.
