Abstract

AIM: To assess prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) image quality and compliance with technical standards between centres in the South West region of the UK. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen imaging sites in the region submitted seven consecutive anonymised MRI studies. These were assessed by two experienced radiologists in consensus. Overall, subjective image quality for T2-weighted imaging (T2W), diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), and dynamic contrast enhancement (DCE) was scored on a five-point Likert scale. Five additional quality parameters were also assessed visually, including image noise, motion, artefact, and distortion. The degree of compliance by each site with 21 published technical standards was also assessed. RESULTS: Ninety-four MRI examinations were reviewed from across all sites (mean 6.3 scans per site, range 5-7). Mean compliance with technical standards was 63% (range 38-86%). Forty-seven percent of sites did not perform DCE. One site used a 3 T scanner. The percentage of patients with overall quality scores of ≥3 (diagnostically acceptable) were 68% for T2W, 81% for DWI, and 60% for both T2W and DWI. Ninety-three percent of the 45 patients who underwent DCE had diagnostically acceptable studies. Abstract

The transitional nuclei Xe132 and Xe133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7-) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2- isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2â‰1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract

The two-proton knockout reaction Be9(Ti54,Ca52+γ) has been studied at 72 MeV/nucleon. Besides the strong feeding of the Ca52 ground state, the only other sizeable cross section proceeds to a 3- level at 3.9 MeV. There is no measurable direct yield to the first excited 2+ state at 2.6 MeV. The results illustrate the potential of such direct reactions for exploring cross-shell proton excitations in neutron-rich nuclei and confirms the doubly-magic nature of Ca52. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The development of a solid-phase immunosorbent assay, suitable for use with enzyme antigens, is described. Acid sphingomyelinase and a mouse monoclonal anti-sphingomyelinase antibody have been used to determine optimal conditions for the assay. The assay involves immobilization of a second antibody (anti-mouse IgG) in the wells of a polyvinyl microtiter plate. Soluble immune complexes of first antibody (monoclonal anti-sphingomyelinase) and antigen (sphingomyelinase), incubated in separate vials, are then reacted in the anti-mouse IgG-coated assay wells, and the extent of the cross-reaction between antibody and antigen is measured by direct assay of enzyme retained in the well. A necessary condition of the assay is that antibody must not inhibit enzyme activity, which makes it especially suitable for monoclonal antibodies. The assay finds useful application in hybridoma fluid screening, equivalence point determination, and demonstration of cross-reacting enzyme from various tissue sources.
