Little is known about the heritable behavioural traits of attacks by large carnivores on people. During the last 30 years attacks by brown bears Ursus arctos on people in the Cantabrian Mountains of Spain have been disproportionately concentrated in the eastern subpopulation. Excluding factors such as the existence of a single unusually bold bear, a higher human population density, particular human activities promoting encounters, or clear habitat differences in the area of this subpopulation, we propose that a plausible explanation for the unbalanced geographical attack pattern is that this subpopulation, separated a century earlier from the western subpopulation, may harbour a higher proportion of bolder bears. In the absence of genetic analyses this explanation remains speculative, but supports the hypothesis that genetic variation on the shy–bold continuum may influence attacks of large carnivores on people.

Our latest shadow path prediction was favourable to a large region in Europe. Observations were arranged in a broad region inside the nominal shadow path. Series of images were obtained with 29 telescopes throughout Europe and from six of them (five in Spain and one in Greece) we detected the occultation. This is the fourth centaur, besides Chariklo, Chiron, and Bienor, for which a multichord stellar occultation is reported. By means of an elliptical fit to the occultation chords, we obtained the limb of 2002 GZ32 during the occultation, resulting in an ellipse with axes of 305 ± 17 km × 146 ± 8 km. From this limb, thanks to a rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we derived the geometric albedo of 2002 GZ32 (pV = 0.043 ± 0.007) and a 3D ellipsoidal shape with axes 366 km × 306 km × 120 km. This shape is not fully consistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium for the known rotation period of 2002 GZ32. The size (albedo) obtained from the occultation is respectively smaller (greater) than that derived from the radiometric technique but compatible within error bars. KIC 8462852 stood out among more than 100,000 stars in the Kepler catalogue because of the strange features of its light curve: a wide, asymmetric dimming taking up to 15 per cent of the light at D793 and a period of multiple, narrow dimmings happening approximately 700 days later. Several models have been proposed to account for this abnormal behaviour, most of which require either unlikely causes or a finely-tuned timing. We aim at offering a relatively natural solution, invoking only phenomena that have been previously observed, although perhaps in larger or more massive versions. We model the system using a large, ringed body whose transit produces the first dimming and a swarm of Trojan objects sharing its orbit that causes the second period of multiple dimmings. The resulting orbital period is $T\approx12$ years, with a semi-major axis $a\approx6$ au. Our model allows us to make two straightforward predictions: we expect the passage of a new swarm of Trojans in front of the star starting during the early months of 2021, and a new transit of the main object during the first half of 2023., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. v3: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The Moon is no longer the “in” thing. We see it as often as the Sun and give it little thought—we’ve become indifferent. However, the Moon does reflect more than just sunlight. The nomenclature of lunar craters holds up a mirror to an important aspect of human history. Of the 1586 lunar craters that have been named honoring philosophers and scientists, only 28 honor a woman. These 28 women of the Moon present us with an opportunity to meditate about this gap, but perhaps more significantly, they offer us an opportunity to talk about their lives, mostly unknown today. The women of the moon tell us stories of love, sorrow, and courage, of remarkable scientific achievements realized through perseverance, and of tragedies triggered by circumstances.

This book recounts briefly the story of lunar nomenclature, delves into a few misunderstood questions about the Moon, and then looks at the lives of the few women that were honored. Who were these women? This book recounts their lives, struggles, and achievements. One way or another these were remarkable women: some got a Nobel Prize, others just funded scientific projects, and yet others were female astronauts. Most readers will only know a few of them if at all, but their exemplary lives are inspiring, and will inspire some women to follow in their footsteps and encourage some men to mend their ways. Along the way it also explains some of the science related to their work, so that the book is also an attempt to enhance the public appreciation of science through these individual stories. At a time when there is still a significant gender inequality, and a loss of faith in science, the stories of the women of the moon must be evoked.

In a genetic study on brown bears (Ursus arctos) in the Cantabrian Mountains, Gregório et al. (2020) interpreted the asymmetrical gene flow they found from the eastern subpopulation towards the western one as an exodus of bears forced to flee from the eastern nucleus "with higher human disturbance and poaching", concluding that connectivity may be operating as a means for eastern Cantabrian bears to find more suitable territories. In this reply, we maintain that the explanations of Gregorio et al. contradict the source-sink theory and we also present demographic data not considered by these authors showing that the eastern subpopulation is not declining, but persistently increasing. After reviewing the demographic and genetic studies published during the last 20 years, we conclude that the connectivity between the two subpopulations is operating as a route which allows the regular movement of males and the restoration of the gene flow across the whole Cantabrian population.

One of the basic tenets of exobiology is the need for a liquid substratum in which life can arise, evolve, and develop. The most common version of this idea involves the necessity of water to act as such a substratum, both because that is the case on Earth and because it seems to be the most viable liquid for chemical reactions that lead to life. Other liquid media that could harbor life, however, have occasionally been put forth. In this work, we investigate the relative probability of finding superficial seas on rocky worlds that could be composed of nine different, potentially abundant, liquids, including water. We study the phase space size of habitable zones defined for those substances. The regions where there can be liquid around every type of star are calculated by using a simple model, excluding areas within a tidal locking distance. We combine the size of these regions with the stellar abundances in the Milky Way disk and modulate our result with the expected radial abundance of planets via a generalized Titius-Bode law, as statistics of exoplanet orbits seem to point to its adequateness. The origin and shape of metabolic scaling has been controversial since Kleiber found that basal metabolic rate of animals seemed to vary as a power law of their body mass with exponent 3/4, instead of 2/3, as a surface-to-volume argument predicts. The universality of exponent 3/4 -claimed in terms of the fractal properties of the nutrient network- has recently been challenged according to empirical evidence that observed a wealth of robust exponents deviating from 3/4. Here we present a conceptually simple thermodynamic framework, where the dependence of metabolic rate with body mass emerges from a trade-off between the energy dissipated as heat and the energy efficiently used by the organism to maintain its metabolism. This balance tunes the shape of an additive model from which different effective scalings can be recovered as particular cases, thereby reconciling previously inconsistent empirical evidence in mammals, birds, insects and even plants under a unified framework. Gravitation is one of the main forces of nature and is a fundamental factor for the habitability of the cosmos. Not only it is the main source of structures in a universe that, without it, would be only a faint soup of gases, but it is the main engine for creating stars and worlds, to make these planets inhabitable and to impose structural and functional limits on the organisms that can be developed in them.

A novel class of graphs, here named quasiperiodic, are const ructed via application of the Horizontal Visibility algorithm to the time series generated along the quasiperiodic route to chaos. We show how the hierarchy of mode-locked regions represented by the Far ey tree is inherited by their associated graphs. We are able to establish, via Renormalization Group (RG) theory, the architecture of the quasiperiodic graphs produced by irrational winding numbers with pure periodic continued fraction. And finally, we demonstrate that the RG fixed-point degree distributions are recovered via optimization of a suitably defined graph entropy

The original ALHAMBRA catalogue contained over 400 000 galaxies selected using a synthetic F814W image, to the magnitude limit AB(F814W) ≈ 24.5. Given the photometric redshift depth of the ALHAMBRA multiband data (〈 z〉 = 0.86) and the approximately I-band selection, there is a noticeable bias against red objects at moderate redshift.We avoid this bias by creating a new catalogue selected in the Ks band. This newly obtained catalogue is certainly shallower in terms of apparent magnitude, but deeper in terms of redshift, with a significant population of red objects at z > 1. We select objects using the Ks band images, which reach an approximate AB magnitude limit Ks ≈ 22. We generate masks and derive completeness functions to characterize the sample. We have tested the quality of the photometry and photometric redshifts using both internal and external checks. Our final catalogue includes ≈95 000 sources down to Ks ≈ 22, with a significant tail towards high redshift. We have checked that there is a large sample of objects with spectral energy distributions that correspond to that of massive, passively evolving galaxies at z > 1, reaching as far as z ≈ 2.5. We have tested the possibility of combining our data with deep infrared observations at longer wavelengths, particularly Spitzer IRAC data. © 2016 The Authors. Several order parameters have been considered to predict and characterize the transition between ordered and disordered phases in random Boolean networks, such as the Hamming distance between replicas or the stable core, which have been successfully used. In this work, we propose a natural and clear new order parameter: the temporal variance. We compute its value analytically and compare it with the results of numerical experiments. Finally, we propose a complexity measure based on the compromise between temporal and spatial variances. This new order parameter and its related complexity measure can be easily applied to other complex systems.

Random Boolean networks are among the best-known systems used to model genetic networks. They show an on–off dynamics and it is easy to obtain analytical results with them. Unfortunately very few genes are strictly on–off switched. On the other hand, continuous methods are in principle more suitable to capture the real behavior of the genome, but have difficulties when trying to obtain analytical results. In this work, we introduce a new model of random discrete network: random walk networks, where the state of each gene is changed by small discrete variations, being thus a natural bridge between discrete and continuous models.

Random Boolean networks have been proposed as discrete models of genetic networks. Depending on the values of their control parameters, these networks fall by themselves in order or disorder phases. These networks are autonomous systems: no external inputs are considered. Nevertheless, in the real world the genetic networks are in5uenced by external signals. Many biological rhythms have 24-h periods related to sunlight, coupled with molecular clocks. In this work we study the response of Random Boolean Networks to analytical and non-analytical external periodic signals. The relationship between external and internal parameters for the determination of the dynamical behaviour of this networks is theoretically determined and simulations in agreement with these theoretical results are reported. c

When using γ-ray coded-mask cameras, one does not get a direct image as in classical optical cameras but the correlation of the mask response with the source. Therefore the data must be mathematically treated in order to reconstruct the original sky sources. Generally this reconstruction is based on linear methods, such as correlating the detector plane with a reconstruction array, or non-linear ones such as iterative or maximization methods (i.e. the EM algorithm). The latter have a better performance but they increase the computational complexity by taking a lot of time to reconstruct an image. Here we present a method for speeding up such kind of algorithms by making use of a neural network with a back-propagation learning rule.

Planck's law describes the radiation of black bodies. The study of its properties is of special interest, as black bodies are a good description for the behavior of many phenomena. In this work a new mathematical study of Planck's law is performed and new properties of this old acquaintance are obtained. As a result, the exact form for the locus in a color-color diagrams has been deduced, and an analytical formula to determine with precision the black body temperature of an object from any pair of measurements has been developed. Thus, using two images of the same field obtained with different filters, one can compute a fast estimation of black body temperatures for every pixel in the image, that is, a new image of the black body temperatures for all the objects in the field. Once these temperatures are obtained, the method allows, as a consequence, a quick estimation of their emission in other frequencies, assuming a black body behavior. The recently formulated theory of horizontal visibility graphs transforms time series into graphs and allows the possibility of studying dynamical systems through the characterization of their associated networks. This method leads to a natural graph-theoretical description of nonlinear systems with qualities in the spirit of symbolic dynamics. We support our claim via the case study of the period-doubling and band-splitting attractor cascades that characterize unimodal maps. We provide a universal analytical description of this classic scenario in terms of the horizontal visibility graphs associated with the dynamics within the attractors, that we call Feigenbaum graphs, independent of map nonlinearity or other particulars. We derive exact results for their degree distribution and related quantities, recast them in the context of the renormalization group and find that its fixed points coincide with those of network entropy optimization. Furthermore, we show that the network entropy mimics the Lyapunov exponent of the map independently of its sign, hinting at a Pesin-like relation equally valid out of chaos., Comment: Published in PLoS ONE (Sep 2011)

When we study communication systems in other animal species, we are led to the conclusion that extraterrestrial intelligent beings are likely to have systems of communication similar to the human one in at least some aspects. That is to say, communication is accomplished by means of the combination of certain information elements playing a role analogous to words, or that the system is a symbolic language (or even both things simultaneously). But in communication, it is also very important how information is transmitted (pictorially, by means of ideograms, letters, etc.), which is going to be strongly determined by the species’specific perception of the world.

As we have seen, radio waves can be excellent candidates for interplanetary communication, due to the fact that our galaxy is transparent to them. The problem lies in properly identifying the origin – artificial or natural – of an arriving signal. When we tune a radio receiver and we turn the antenna toward the cosmos, we gather hundreds of different signals. Even some of the natural signals are quite suggestive, and one can be tempted to consider them emissions from other civilizations.
