To evaluate the relationships between maternal particulate matter exposure and offspring birth weight. Studies were categorized into three subgroups: term low birth weight (TLBW) among full-term births and all births (regardless of gestational age) and low birth weight (LBW) among all births, based on the search results of MEDLINE and the Web of Science from the inception of the database to April 2022. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on the economic status, region, exposure assessment, risk of bias, and adjustment. Sixty-one studies involving 34,506,975 singleton live births in 15 countries were analyzed. Overall, the risk of bias for most studies (75%) was low. In 39 of 47 term birth studies, the pooled odds ratio of TLBW among term births for per interquartile range (IQR) increases throughout the entire pregnancy was 1.02 (1.01 to 1.03) for PM2.5 and 1.03 (1.01 to 1.05) for PM10 after adjustment for covariates. No significant relevance was detected across each trimester period for PM2.5. A stronger effect was observed during the second trimester (1.03, 1.01 to 1.06) for PM10. There was no increased risk of TLBW in all births associated with IQR increases in PM2.5 and PM10. LBW was associated with PM2.5 exposure in 4 of 7 studies, but statistical heterogeneity was considerable. In the TLBW subgroup analysis, the effects of PM2.5 and PM10 were both greater in studies conducted in advanced countries, studies with low bias, and studies that adjusted for maternal age, infant sex, and parity. Stronger effects were present for PM2.5 exposure collected from monitoring stations and PM10 exposure interpolated from the inverse distance weighting model. TLBW may be associated with prenatal exposure to particulate matter, but no critical windows were identified. Stronger associations were observed in advanced countries. Future original study designs need to consider the impact of different exposure assessment modalities and all possible confounding factors.

Background The interplay among respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) loads, mucosal interferons (IFN), and disease severity in RSV-infected children is poorly understood. Methods Children 6–24 months) and multivariable analyses performed to identify predictors of disease severity. Results In 2015–2019 we enrolled 219 RSV-infected children (78 outpatients; 141 inpatients) and 34 healthy controls. Type I, II, and III IFN concentrations were higher in children aged >6 versus 0–6 months and, like CXCL10, they were higher in outpatients than inpatients and correlated with RSV loads (P < .05). Higher IL6 concentrations increased the odds of hospitalization (odds ratio [OR], 2.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07–5.36) only in children >6 months, while higher IFN-λ2/3 concentrations had the opposite effect irrespective of age (OR, 0.38; 95% CI, .15–.86). Likewise, higher CXCL10 concentrations decreased the odds of hospitalization (OR, 0.21; 95% CI, .08–.48), oxygen administration (OR, 0.42; 95% CI, .21–.80),PICU admission (OR, 0.39; 95% CI, .20–.73), and prolonged hospitalization (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, .32–.98) irrespective of age. Conclusions Children with milder RSV infection and those aged >6 months had higher concentrations of mucosal IFNs, suggesting that maturation of mucosal IFN responses are associated with protection against severe RSV disease.

Three strategies were proposed to prolong the service life of continuous fiber-reinforced silicon carbide ceramic matrix composite (CMC-SiC), which served as thermal-structure components of aeroengine at thermo-mechanical-oxygenic coupling environment. As for some thermal-structure components with low working stress, improving the degree of densification was crucial to prolong the service life, and the related process approaches were recited. If the thermal-structure components worked under moderate stress, the matrix cracking stress (σmc) should be improved as far as possible. The fiber preform architecture, interface shear strength, residual thermal stress, and matrix strengthening were associated with σmc in this review. Introducing self-healing components was quite significant with the appearance of matrix microcracks when CMC-SiC worked at more severe environment for hundreds of hours. The damage can be sealed by glass phase originating from the reaction between self-healing components and oxygen. The effective self-healing temperature range of different self-healing components was first summarized and distinguished. The structure, composition, and preparation process of CMC-SiC should be systematically designed and optimized to achieve long duration target.

Arsenic pollution in groundwater is serious in many areas of the world. The interaction between arsenic, iron and organic matter has an important impact on the transformation and transportation of arsenic in groundwater. This review summarises work in three areas – namely, (a) interaction between different types of organic matter and arsenic, which forms arsenic–organic matter complexes through ligand exchange; (b) oxidation–reduction reaction of organic matter and iron-containing minerals and the formation of complexes between organic matter and iron ions; and (c) formation of ternary complexes of organic matter, arsenic and iron-containing minerals (connected by iron ion bridges) and their characterisation methods. This review has great theoretical and applied value for the discovery of the mechanism of arsenic pollution and the development of arsenic pollution control measures.

Individual cells are basic units of life. Despite extensive efforts to characterize the cellular heterogeneity of different organisms, cross-species comparisons of landscape dynamics have not been achieved. Here, we applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to map organism-level cell landscapes at multiple life stages for mice, zebrafish and Drosophila. By integrating the comprehensive dataset of2.6 million single cells, we constructed a cross-species cell landscape and identified signatures and common pathways that changed throughout the life span. We identified structural inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction as the most common hallmarks of organism aging, and found that pharmacological activation of mitochondrial metabolism alleviated aging phenotypes in mice. The cross-species cell landscape with other published datasets were stored in an integrated online portal-Cell Landscape. Our work provides a valuable resource for studying lineage development, maturation and aging.How many cell types are there in nature? How do they change during the life cycle? These are two fundamental questions that researchers have been trying to understand in the area of biology. In this study, single-cell mRNA sequencing data were used to profile over 2.6 million individual cells from mice, zebrafish and Drosophila at different life stages, 1.3 million of which were newly collected. The comprehensive datasets allow investigators to construct a cross-species cell landscape that helps to reveal the conservation and diversity of cell taxonomies at genetic and regulatory levels. Background Tumour immune microenvironment heterogeneity is prevalent in numerous cancers and can negatively impact immunotherapy response. Immune heterogeneity and evolution in gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA) have not been studied in the past. Methods Together with a multi-region sampling of normal, primary and metastatic tissues, we performed whole exome sequencing, TCR sequencing as well as immune cell infiltration estimation through deconvolution of gene expression signals. Results We discovered high TCR repertoire and immune cell infiltration heterogeneity among metastatic sites, while they were homogeneous among primary and normal samples. Metastatic sites shared high levels of abundant TCR clonotypes with blood, indicating immune surveillance via blood. Metastatic sites also had low levels of tumour-eliminating immune cells and were undergoing heavy immunomodulation compared to normal and primary tumour tissues. There was co-evolution of neo-antigen and TCR repertoire, but only in patients with late diverging mutational evolution. Co-evolution of TCR repertoire and immune cell infiltration was seen in all except one patient. Conclusions Our findings revealed immune heterogeneity and co-evolution in GEA, which may inform immunotherapy decision-making.

ObjectiveEarly identifying arteriosclerosis in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients could contribute to choosing proper subjects for early prevention. Here, we aimed to investigate whether radiomic intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) analysis could be used as a novel marker to indicate arteriosclerosis in newly diagnosed T2D patients.MethodsA total of 549 patients with newly diagnosed T2D were included in this study. The clinical information of the patients was recorded and the carotid plaque burden was used to indicate arteriosclerosis. Three models were constructed to evaluate the risk of arteriosclerosis: a clinical model, a radiomics model (a model based on IMAT analysis proceeded on chest CT images), and a clinical-radiomics combined model (a model that integrated clinical-radiological features). The performance of the three models were compared using the area under the curve (AUC) and DeLong test. Nomograms were constructed to indicate arteriosclerosis presence and severity. Calibration curves and decision curves were plotted to evaluate the clinical benefit of using the optimal model.ResultsThe AUC for indicating arteriosclerosis of the clinical-radiomics combined model was higher than that of the clinical model [0.934 (0.909, 0.959) vs. 0.687 (0.634, 0.730), P < 0.001 in the training set, 0.933 (0.898, 0.969) vs. 0.721 (0.642, 0.799), P < 0.001 in the validation set]. Similar indicative efficacies were found between the clinical-radiomics combined model and radiomics model (P = 0.5694). The AUC for indicating the severity of arteriosclerosis of the combined clinical-radiomics model was higher than that of both the clinical model and radiomics model [0.824 (0.765, 0.882) vs. 0.755 (0.683, 0.826) and 0.734 (0.663, 0.805), P < 0.001 in the training set, 0.717 (0.604, 0.830) vs. 0.620 (0.490, 0.750) and 0.698 (0.582, 0.814), P < 0.001 in the validation set, respectively]. The decision curve showed that the clinical-radiomics combined model and radiomics model indicated a better performance than the clinical model in indicating arteriosclerosis. However, in indicating severe arteriosclerosis, the clinical-radiomics combined model had higher efficacy than the other two models.ConclusionRadiomics IMAT analysis could be a novel marker for indicating arteriosclerosis in patients with newly diagnosed T2D. The constructed nomograms provide a quantitative and intuitive way to assess the risk of arteriosclerosis, which may help clinicians comprehensively analyse radiomics characteristics and clinical risk factors more confidently.

Background Students with special educational needs (SEN) often face dehumanization, which negatively impacts their mental health, daily functioning, and educational outcomes. This study seeks to address the research gap in dehumanization literature by examining the prevalence, dynamics, and consequences of self-dehumanization and other-dehumanization among SEN students. Moreover, by utilizing psychological experiments, the study aims to identify potential intervention strategies and make recommendations to minimize the negative psychological consequences derived from the dual model of dehumanization. Methods This two-phase, mixed-methods study incorporates cross-sectional surveys and quasi-experimental designs. Phase 1 investigates the self-dehumanization of SEN students and other-dehumanization from non-SEN peers, teachers, parents, and the public. Phase 2 involves four experimental studies to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions emphasizing human nature and uniqueness in reducing self-dehumanization and other-dehumanization of SEN students, as well as their associated negative consequences. Discussion The study fills a research gap by examining dehumanization in SEN students, applying dyadic modeling, and identifying potential solutions to ameliorate dehumanization and its negative consequences. The findings will contribute to the advancement of the dual model of dehumanization, increase public awareness and support for SEN students in inclusive education, and promote changes in school practice and family support. The 24-month study in Hong Kong schools is expected to provide significant insights into inclusive education in school and community settings.

The combination of hetero-elemental doping and vacancy engineering will be developed as one of the most efficient strategies to design excellent electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a novel strategy for N-doping coupled with Co-vacancies is demonstrated to precisely activate inert S atoms adjacent to Co-vacancies and significantly improve charge transfer for CoS toward accelerating HER. In this strategy, N-doping favors the presence of Co-vacancies, due to greatly decreasing their formation energy. The as-developed strategy realizes the upshift of S 3p orbitals followed by more overlapping between S 3py and H 1s orbitals, which results in the favorable hydrogen atom adsorption free energy change (ΔGH) to activate inert S atoms as newborn catalytical sites. Besides, this strategy synergistically decreases the bandgap of CoS, thereby achieving satisfactory electrical conductivity and low charge-transfer resistance for the as-obtained electrocatalysts. With an excellent HER activity of −89.0 mV at 10.0 mA cm−2 in alkaline environments, this work provides a new approach to unlocking inert sites and significantly improving charge transfer toward cobalt-based materials for highly efficient HER.

Semen analysis (SA) plays a key role in guiding treatments of male reproductive diseases and infertility due to male factors; however, it remains challenging to conduct an accurate SA due to lack of standardization, highly subjective assessments, and problems with automated procedures. Therefore, quality assurance (QA) and teaching courses are essential for making the laboratory results more consistent.The external quality assurance (EQA) scheme was organized by national human sperm bank technology training bases in Guangdong province in China between 2009 and 2020. Until 2020, 124 laboratories from China participated in the EQA program. The EQA scheme per year has been organized involving two semen aliquots for sperm concentration, two video recordings for motility, and two smears for sperm morphology. All samples used in the EQA scheme were obtained from different healthy donors or patients.We estimated that the median coefficient of variation (CV) of sperm concentration, ignoring the method used, was 26.6%. Using a 100 µm deep counting chamber led to a decreasing CV of 13.6%. For sperm motility, the median CV of nonprogressive motility was high (50.8%), but the CV of progressive motility (13.2%), immotile sperm (14.3%), and total motility (11.8%) were acceptable. The morphology assessment revealed large variability (44.4%) irrespective of the classification criteria.The reduction of interlaboratory variability is still a challenge during SA in China. Therefore, it is critical to increase awareness of joining EQA schemes and establish standardized training centers to follow WHO-recommended procedures toward Chinese standards.

It is known that hydrogels based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) have properties controling microbial growth, reducing inflammatory cell infiltration, and promoting collagen deposition. Plantamajoside (PMS), a natural Chinese herbal medicine with biological activity, has the properties of reducing inflammation, anti-oxidation, and promoting wound healing. However, the effects of carboxymethyl chitosan/plantamajoside hydrogel on partial thickness burn wounds remain unclear.The healing effect of carboxymethyl chitosan/plantamajoside hydrogel was evaluated by in vitro cell viability assay, cell migration assay, and further evaluated in a rat model of partial-thickness burn wounds.The hydrogels were highly porous with a pore size of about 250 μm, and these pores were interconnected. After adding plantamajoside, a dense microstructure was further formed. The hydrogels containing 0.25% plantamajoside significantly increased the viability and migration of L929 cells (P 0.05). Carboxymethyl chitosan/plantamajoside hydrogel significantly improved wound healing, granulation tissue proliferation and re-epithelialization, and promoted collagen deposition (P 0.05). Carboxymethyl chitosan/plantamajoside hydrogel also significantly decreased IL (interleukin)-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α expression, and increased IL-10 expression (P 0.05). Furthermore, carboxymethyl chitosan/plantamajoside hydrogel significantly promoted the expression levels of VEGF, CD31, α-SMA (α-smooth muscle actin) and collagen III, and reduced the expression level of collagen Ⅰ (P 0.05). Our data suggest that carboxymethyl chitosan/plantamajoside hydrogel promotes burn wound healing by accelerating angiogenesis and collagen deposition and reducing the inflammatory response.

Electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) materials for use in extreme environments are of great interest. Herein, SiC nanowires / SiC whiskers (SiCnw/SiCw) foam with unique “wire-on-sphere” hierarchical structure was developed for efficient high-temperature EWA. SiCw were assembled to porous SiCw spheres via spray drying and then SiCw spheres were 3D printed to SiCw foam. The catalyst-free precursor infiltration pyrolysis process was first developed to ensure that SiCnw can intentionally grow in situ on the surface of SiCw spheres, thereby achieving “wire-on-sphere” hierarchical structure foam. At room-temperature, the maximum electromagnetic wave effective absorption bandwidth (EABmax) and minimum electromagnetic wave reflection coefficient (RCmin) of SiCnw/SiCw foam can reach 4 GHz and -57 dB, respectively. At 600 °C, the EABmax and RCmin were 3 GHz and -15 dB, respectively. Furthermore, even oxidized at 1000–1500 °C, SiCnw/SiCw foam can still retain EABmax ranging from 2.7 to 3.9 GHz and RCmin ranging from -16 dB to -64 dB, because the formation of SiO2 layer with appropriate thickness can boost interfacial polarization and regulate impedance matching. The SiCnw/SiCw foam also shows the flexural strength as high as 17.05 MPa. All results demonstrate that the SiCnw/SiCw foam is a promising EWA material for applications of harsh environments. And the material-independent “wire-on-sphere” hierarchical structure and its novel preparation process should find the widespread use in the design and fabrication of high-efficiency EWA micro-nano materials.
