Abstract

We present the first catalog of very-high energy and ultra-high energy $\gamma$-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) from March 2021 to September 2022 and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array (KM2A) from January 2020 to September 2022. This catalog represents the most sensitive $E > 1$ TeV gamma-ray survey of the sky covering declination from $-$20$^{\circ}$ to 80$^{\circ}$. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with extended size smaller than $2^\circ$ and with significance of detection at $> 5\sigma$. For each source, we provide its position, extension and spectral characteristics. Furthermore, based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Additionally, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ($E > 100$ TeV) emission at $> 4\sigma$ significance level., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Variability is a typical observation feature of Fermi blazars, sometimes it shows quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO). In this work, we obtained 5-day binned light curves (with a time coverage of $\sim$ 12.9 yr) for S5 1044+71 based on Fermi LAT data, adopted five different methods: Date-compensated Discrete Fourier Transform (DCDFT), Jurkevich (JV), Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP), a Fortran 90 program (REDFIT) and the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) to the $γ$-ray light curve, and found a possible QPO of 3.06 $\pm$ 0.43 yr at the significance level of $\sim3.6σ$. A binary black hole model including accretion model and dual-jets model is used to explain this quasi-periodic variability. We also estimated the Doppler factors and the apparent velocity for the two jet components. We speculate that this $γ$-ray quasi-periodic modulation suggest the presence of a binary supermassive black hole in S5 1044+71., 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted by APJ

Abstract

The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

Abstract

BL Lacs are one subclass of blazars with highly energetic $��$-ray emission, which is strongly boosted by a relativistic beaming effect. The latest catalogue of the 10 years of {\it Fermi}/LAT data Abdollahi et al. (2020) and the $��$-ray Doppler factors in Pei et al. (2020) provide us with a large BL Lac sample to study their jet emission morphologies and intrinsic properties. In this paper, we collected a sample of 294 {\it Fermi} BL Lacs and probed the correlations between the $��$-ray emissions and luminosity distances. Our analyses give following conclusions: (1) the observed $��$-ray emissions are really boosted by the $��$-ray Doppler factor, and the intrinsic $��$-ray emissions are closely correlated with luminosity distances. (2) the morphology of jet emissions for HBLs may be continuous, while that for IBLs may be the case of a moving sphere in the $��$-ray bands., 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Accepted by Ap&SS

Abstract

Beaming effect is important for the observational properties of blazars. In this work, we collect 91 $Fermi$ blazars with available radio Doppler factors. $��$-ray Doppler factors are estimated and compared with radio Doppler factors for some sources. The intrinsic (de-beamed) $��$-ray flux density ($f^{\rm in}_��$), intrinsic $��$-ray luminosity ($L^{\rm in}_��$), and intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency ($��_{\rm p}^{\rm in}$) are calculated. Then we study the correlations between $f^{\rm in}_��$ and redshift and find that they follow the theoretical relation: $\log f = -2.0 \log z + {\rm const}$. When the subclasses are considered, we find that stationary jets are perhaps dominant in low synchrotron peaked blazars. 63 $Fermi$ blazars with both available short variability time scales ($��T$) and Doppler factors are also collected. We find that the intrinsic relationship between $L ^{\rm in}_��$ and $��T^{\rm in}$ obeys the Elliot \& Shapiro and the Abramowicz \& Nobili relations. Abstract

To overcome the dependence of the plasma extraction on siphon hydrophilicity in a centrifugal microfluidic chip and to ensure long-term stability and reliability of the microfluidic chip, a compressed air reservoir connected to the blood separated reservoir was proposed to separate the blood in blood separated reservoir at high rotating speeds. Through lowering the spinning speed, the plasma in the separated reservoir was pumped toward the CD-like chip center to release the stored air pressure produced by the rotation at high spinning speeds. Based on the thermodynamics of the isothermal gas, the pneumatic pumping method was modeled, and the model was confirmed by analyzing pumping positions and air compression versus spinning speeds. By using the layered Polymethyl Methacrylate(PMMA)as materials, the centrifugal microfluidic chips for plasma extraction were fabricated with a CO2 laser process technique and the volume of compressed air and the blood position at siphon were tested at different rotational speeds. Experimental results demonstrate that the achieved volume of compression is 8.7L and the siphon valve effectively inhibits whole blood to overflow the crest of siphon at 4 000 r/min speed. With lowering the spin speed to 1 000 r/min, the release of compressed air overcomes the centrifugal force and drives the plasma to flow past the crest of siphon. Then the plasma extraction is realized in quantitation.

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are divided into two classes according to their durations. We investigate if the softness of bursts plays a role in the conventional classification of the objects. We employ the BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment) catalog and analyze the duration distributions of different groups of GRBs associated with distinct softness. Our analysis reveals that the conventional classification of GRBs with the duration of bursts is influenced by the softness of the objects. There exits a bimodality in the duration distribution of GRBs for each group of bursts and the time position of the dip in the bimodality histogram shifts with the softness parameter. Our findings suggest that the conventional classification scheme should be modified by separating the two well-known populations in different softness groups, which would be more reasonable than doing so with a single sample. According to the relation between the dip position and the softness parameter, we get an empirical function that can roughly set apart the short-hard and long-soft bursts: $SP = (0.100 \pm 0.028) T_{90}^{-(0.85 \pm 0.18)}$, where $SP$ is the softness parameter adopted in this paper., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The relation between the $��$-ray and the emission line luminosities for a sample of 36 $��$-ray loud blazars is investigated; an apparent correlation between them, $L_�� \propto L_{Line}^{0.69\pm0.11}$, with a correlation coefficient $r=0.741$ and a chance probability of $p = 1.9\times10^{-6}$, is found. It is found, however, that there is no intrinsic correlation between them: the apparent correlation is due to the redshift dependence in a flux-limited sample. Thus no evidence is found to support the argument that the up-scattered soft photons are from the broad emission lines. Our analysis does not conflict with the SSC model. The disk-jet symbiosis and radio/$��$-ray correlation found in the literature are also discussed. Abstract

In this paper, The central black hole masses and the Doppler factors are derived for PKS 0528+134, PKS 0537-441, 3C279, PKS 1406-074, PKS 1622-297, Q1633+382, Mkn 501, and BL Lacertae. The masses obtained are in the range of (1 -7)$\times 10^{7}M_{\odot}$ and compared with that obtained with the Klein-Nishina cross section considered (Dermer & Gehrels 1995). If we considered only the Thomson cross section, the masses are in the range of 2.6$\times 10^{6}M_{\odot}$ - 2$\times 10^{11}M_{\odot}$. The masses obtained from our method are less sensitive to the flux than those obtained from Dermer & Gehrels (1995) method. The masses obtained from two flares (1991 and 1996 flares) of 3C279 are almost the same. For 3C279 and BL Lacertae, viewing angle, $��$, and Lorentz factor, $��$, are estimated from the derived Doppler factor and the measured superluminal velocity. For 3C279, $��= 10^{\circ}.9-15^{\circ}.6$, $��$ = 2.4-14.4 for $��$ = 3.37; $��= 8^{\circ}.45-9^{\circ}.7$, $��$ = 2.95-11.20 for $��$ = 4.89; For BL Lacertae, $��= 25^{\circ}-29^{\circ}.4$, $��$ = 2.0-4.0., 5 pages, A&AS, 136, 13-18 (1999)

Abstract

Both observations and theoretical models suggest that the emissions in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the afterglows are beamed. We argue that the recent polarization measured in the afterglows gives further evidence of beaming in GRBs. In this approach, we adopted the polarization-magnitude relation of BL Lacertae objects to 4 GRBs with available polarization measurements and found that the data of the 4 GRBs are consistent with the relation of BL Lacertae objects. This result suggests that the emissions in GRBs are beamed and there are similarities between GRBs and BL Lacertae objects (or generally blazars). Abstract

BL Lacertae objects are an extreme subclass of AGNs showing rapid and large-amplitude variability, high and variable polarization, and core-dominated radio emissions. If a strong beaming effect is the cause of the extreme observation properties, one would expect that these properties would be correlated with each other. Based on the relativistic beaming model, relationships between the polarization and the magnitude variation in brightness, as well as the core- dominance parameter are derived and used statistically to compare with the observational data of a BL Lacertae object sample. The statistical results are consistent with these correlations, which suggests that the polarization, the variation, and the core-dominance parameter are possible indications of the beaming effect., Comment: 6 pages, two figures, one table, some revisions. In this paper: 1. The assumption of the dependence of Doppler factor on the emission frequency (Fan et al. 1993) is used to explain the observational differences between the radio-selected BL Lac objects(RBLs) and the X-Ray-Selected BL Lac objects (XBLs): a) Hubble relation; b) different multiwavelength correlations; c) different regions in the effective spectral index diagram; d) different polarization. The results suggest that RBLs and XBLs are the same. 2. From the analysis of the relation between infrared magnitude and redshift, it is proposed that the parent population of BL Lac objects should be FRI radio galaxies and FRII(G) radio galaxies showing the optical spectra of a galaxy. 3. From the superluminal motion, the assumption (Fan et al. 1993) is confirmed. 4. Abstract

We present UBVRI light curves of BL Lacertae from May 2000 to January 2001, obtained by 24 telescopes in 11 countries. More than 15000 observations were performed in that period, which was the extension of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) campaign originally planned for July-August 2000. Rapid flux oscillations are present all the time, involving variations up to a few tenths of mag on hour time scales, and witnessing an intense intraday activity of this source. Colour indexes have been derived by coupling the highest precision B and R data taken by the same instrument within 20 min and after subtracting the host galaxy contribution from the fluxes. The 620 indexes obtained show that the optical spectrum is weakly sensitive to the long-term trend, while it strictly follows the short-term flux behaviour, becoming bluer when the brightness increases. Thus, spectral changes are not related to the host galaxy contribution, but they are an intrinsic feature of fast flares. We suggest that the achromatic mechanism causing the long-term flux base-level modulation can be envisaged in a variation of the relativistic Doppler beaming factor, and that this variation is likely due to a change of the viewing angle. Discrete correlation function (DCF) analysis reveals the existence of a characteristic time scale of variability of about 7 h in the light curve of the core WEBT campaign, while no measurable time delay between variations in the B and R bands is found.

Abstract

To establish digitized virtual Chinese No.1 female (VCH-F1) image database.A 19 years old female cadaver was scanned by CT, MRI, and perfused with red filling material through formal artery before freezing and em- bedding. The whole body was cut by JZ1500A vertical milling machine with a 0.2 mm inter-spacing. All the images was produced by Fuji FinePix S2 Pro camera.The body index of VCH-F1 was 94%. We cut 8 556 sections of the whole body, and each image was 17.5 MB in size and the whole database reached 149.7 GB. We have totally 6 versions of the database for different applications.Compared with other databases, VCH-F1 has good representation of the Chinese body shape, colorful filling material in blood vessels providing enough information for future registration and segmentation. Vertical embedding and cutting helped to retain normal human physiological posture, and the image quality and operation efficiency were improved by using various techniques such as one-time freezing and fixation, double-temperature icehouse, large-diameter milling disc and whole body cutting.

Abstract

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have mapped risk alleles for at least 10 distinct cancers to a small region of 63 000 bp on chromosome 5p15.33. This region harbors the TERT and CLPTM1L genes; the former encodes the catalytic subunit of telomerase reverse transcriptase and the latter may play a role in apoptosis. To investigate further the genetic architecture of common susceptibility alleles in this region, we conducted an agnostic subset-based meta-analysis (association analysis based on subsets) across six distinct cancers in 34 248 cases and 45 036 controls. Based on sequential conditional analysis, we identified as many as six independent risk loci marked by common single-nucleotide polymorphisms: five in the TERT gene (Region 1: rs7726159, P = 2.10 x 10(-39); Region 3: rs2853677, P = 3.30 x 10(-36) and PConditional = 2.36 x 10(-8); Region 4: rs2736098, P = 3.87 x 10(-12) and PConditional = 5.19 x 10(-6), Region 5: rs13172201, P = 0.041 and PConditional = 2.04 x 10(-6); and Region 6: rs10069690, P = 7.49 x 10(-15) and PConditional = 5.35 x 10(-7)) and one in the neighboring CLPTM1L gene (Region 2: rs451360; P = 1.90 x 10(-18) and PConditional = 7.06 x 10(-16)). Between three and five cancers mapped to each independent locus with both risk-enhancing and protective effects. Allele-specific effects on DNA methylation were seen for a subset of risk loci, indicating that methylation and subsequent effects on gene expression may contribute to the biology of risk variants on 5p15.33. Our results provide strong support for extensive pleiotropy across this region of 5p15.33, to an extent not previously observed in other cancer susceptibility loci.

Abstract

Importance: Asia is home to the largest diabetic populations in the world. However, limited studies have quantified the association of diabetes with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Asian populations. Objectives: To evaluate the association of diabetes with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Asia and to investigate potential effect modifications of the diabetes-mortality associations by participants' age, sex, education level, body mass index, and smoking status. Design, Setting, and Participants: This pooled analysis incorporated individual participant data from 22 prospective cohort studies of the Asia Cohort Consortium conducted between 1963 and 2006. A total of 1 002 551 Asian individuals (from mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, India, and Bangladesh) were followed up for more than 3 years. Cohort-specific hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for all-cause and cause-specific mortality were estimated using Cox regression models and then pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Analysis was conducted between January 10, 2018, and August 31, 2018. Exposures: Doctor-diagnosed diabetes, age, sex, education level, body mass index, and smoking status. Main Outcomes and Measures: All-cause and cause-specific mortality. Results: Of 1 002 551 participants (518 537 [51.7%] female; median [range] age, 54.0 [30.0-98.0] years), 148 868 deaths were ascertained during a median (range) follow-up of 12.6 (3.0-38.9) years. The overall prevalence of diabetes reported at baseline was 4.8% for men and 3.6% for women. Patients with diabetes had a 1.89-fold risk of all-cause death compared with patients without diabetes (hazard ratio [HR], 1.89; 95% CI, 1.74-2.04), with the highest relative risk of death due to diabetes itself (HR, 22.8; 95% CI, 18.5-28.1), followed by renal disease (HR, 3.08; 95% CI, 2.50-3.78), coronary heart disease (HR, 2.57; 95% CI, 2.19-3.02), and ischemic stroke (HR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.85-2.51). Abstract

Objectives: To estimate the proportion of liver cancer cases and deaths due to infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), aflatoxin exposure, alcohol drinking and smoking in China in 2005. Study design: Systemic assessment of the burden of five modifiable risk factors on the occurrence of liver cancer in China using the population attributable fraction. Methods: We estimated the population attributable fraction of liver cancer caused by five modifiable risk factors using the prevalence data around 1990 and data on relative risks from meta-analyses, and large-scale observational studies. Liver cancer mortality data were from the 3rd National Death Causes Survey, and data on liver cancer incidence were estimated from the mortality data from cancer registries in China and a mortality/incidence ratio calculated. Results: We estimated that HBV infection was responsible for 65.9% of liver cancer deaths in men and 58.4% in women, while HCV was responsible for 27.3% and 28.6% respectively. The fraction of liver cancer deaths attributable to aflatoxin was estimated to be 25.0% for both men and women. Alcohol drinking was responsible for 23.4% of liver cancer deaths in men and 2.2% in women. Smoking was responsible for 18.7% and 1.0% . Overall, 86% of liver cancer mortality and incidence (88% in men and 78% in women) was attributable to these five modifiable risk factors. Conclusions: HBV, HCV, aflatoxin, alcohol drinking and tobacco smoking were responsible for 86% of liver cancer mortality and incidence in China in 2005. Our findings provide useful data for developing guidelines for liver cancer prevention and control in China and other developing countries.

Abstract

Wei Zheng and colleagues quantify the burden of tobacco-smoking-related deaths for adults in Asia. Please see later in the article for the Editors' Summary, Background Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for many diseases. We sought to quantify the burden of tobacco-smoking-related deaths in Asia, in parts of which men's smoking prevalence is among the world's highest. Methods and Findings We performed pooled analyses of data from 1,049,929 participants in 21 cohorts in Asia to quantify the risks of total and cause-specific mortality associated with tobacco smoking using adjusted hazard ratios and their 95% confidence intervals. We then estimated smoking-related deaths among adults aged ≥45 y in 2004 in Bangladesh, India, mainland China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan—accounting for ∼71% of Asia's total population. An approximately 1.44-fold (95% CI = 1.37–1.51) and 1.48-fold (1.38–1.58) elevated risk of death from any cause was found in male and female ever-smokers, respectively. In 2004, active tobacco smoking accounted for approximately 15.8% (95% CI = 14.3%–17.2%) and 3.3% (2.6%–4.0%) of deaths, respectively, in men and women aged ≥45 y in the seven countries/regions combined, with a total number of estimated deaths of ∼1,575,500 (95% CI = 1,398,000–1,744,700). Among men, approximately 11.4%, 30.5%, and 19.8% of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and respiratory diseases, respectively, were attributable to tobacco smoking. Corresponding proportions for East Asian women were 3.7%, 4.6%, and 1.7%, respectively. The strongest association with tobacco smoking was found for lung cancer: a 3- to 4-fold elevated risk, accounting for 60.5% and 16.7% of lung cancer deaths, respectively, in Asian men and East Asian women aged ≥45 y. Conclusions Tobacco smoking is associated with a substantially elevated risk of mortality, accounting for approximately 2 million deaths in adults aged ≥45 y throughout Asia in 2004. It is likely that smoking-related deaths in Asia will continue to rise over the next few decades if no effective smoking control programs are implemented. Please see later in the article for the Editors' Summary, Editors' Summary Background Every year, more than 5 million smokers die from tobacco-related diseases. Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (conditions that affect the heart and the circulation), respiratory disease (conditions that affect breathing), lung cancer, and several other types of cancer. All told, tobacco smoking kills up to half its users. The ongoing global “epidemic” of tobacco smoking and tobacco-related diseases initially affected people living in the US and other Western countries, where the prevalence of smoking (the proportion of the population that smokes) in men began to rise in the early 1900s, peaking in the 1960s. A similar epidemic occurred in women about 40 years later. Smoking-related deaths began to increase in the second half of the 20th century, and by the 1990s, tobacco smoking accounted for a third of all deaths and about half of cancer deaths among men in the US and other Western countries. More recently, increased awareness of the risks of smoking and the introduction of various tobacco control measures has led to a steady decline in tobacco use and in smoking-related diseases in many developed countries. Why Was This Study Done? Unfortunately, less well-developed tobacco control programs, inadequate public awareness of smoking risks, and tobacco company marketing have recently led to sharp increases in the prevalence of smoking in many low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Asia. More than 50% of men in many Asian countries are now smokers, about twice the prevalence in many Western countries, and more women in some Asian countries are smoking than previously. More than half of the world's billion smokers now live in Asia. However, little is known about the burden of tobacco-related mortality (deaths) in this region. In this study, the researchers quantify the risk of total and cause-specific mortality associated with tobacco use among adults aged 45 years or older by undertaking a pooled statistical analysis of data collected from 21 Asian cohorts (groups) about their smoking history and health. What Did the Researchers Do and Find? For their study, the researchers used data from more than 1 million participants enrolled in studies undertaken in Bangladesh, India, mainland China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan (which together account for 71% of Asia's total population). Smoking prevalences among male and female participants were 65.1% and 7.1%, respectively. Compared with never-smokers, ever-smokers had a higher risk of death from any cause in pooled analyses of all the cohorts (adjusted hazard ratios [HRs] of 1.44 and 1.48 for men and women, respectively; an adjusted HR indicates how often an event occurs in one group compared to another group after adjustment for other characteristics that affect an individual's risk of the event). Compared with never smoking, ever smoking was associated with a higher risk of death due to cardiovascular disease, cancer (particularly lung cancer), and respiratory disease among Asian men and among East Asian women. Moreover, the researchers estimate that, in the countries included in this study, tobacco smoking accounted for 15.8% of all deaths among men and 3.3% of deaths among women in 2004—a total of about 1.5 million deaths, which scales up to 2 million deaths for the population of the whole of Asia. Notably, in 2004, tobacco smoking accounted for 60.5% of lung-cancer deaths among Asian men and 16.7% of lung-cancer deaths among East Asian women. What Do These Findings Mean? These findings provide strong evidence that tobacco smoking is associated with a substantially raised risk of death among adults aged 45 years or older throughout Asia. The association between smoking and mortality risk in Asia reported here is weaker than that previously reported for Western countries, possibly because widespread tobacco smoking started several decades later in most Asian countries than in Europe and North America and the deleterious effects of smoking take some years to become evident. The researchers note that certain limitations of their analysis are likely to affect the accuracy of its findings. For example, because no data were available to estimate the impact of secondhand smoke, the estimate of deaths attributable to smoking is likely to be an underestimate. However, the finding that nearly 45% of the global deaths from active tobacco smoking occur in Asia highlights the urgent need to implement comprehensive tobacco control programs in Asia to reduce the burden of tobacco-related disease. Abstract

A hierarchical multi-scale model that couples a region of material described by discrete dislocation plasticity to a surrounding region described by conventional crystal plasticity is presented. The coupled model is aimed at capturing non-classical plasticity effects such as the long-range stresses associated with a density of geometrically necessary dislocations and source limited plasticity, while also accounting for plastic flow and the associated energy dissipation at much larger scales where such non-classical effects are absent. The key to the model is the treatment of the interface between the discrete and continuum regions, where continuity of tractions and displacements is maintained in an average sense and the flow of net Burgers vector is managed via "passing" of discrete dislocations. The formulation is used to analyze two plane strain problems: (i) tension of a block and (ii) crack growth under mode I loading with various sizes of the discrete dislocation plasticity region surrounding the crack tip. The computed crack growth resistance curves are nearly independent of the size of the discrete dislocation plasticity region for region sizes ranging from 30 mu m x 30 mu m to 10 mu m x 5 mu m. The multi-scale model can reduce the computational time for the mode 1 crack analysis by a factor of 14 with little or no loss of fidelity in the crack growth predictions. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
