Summary The dead foliage of scorched crowns is one of the most conspicuous signatures of wildland fires. Globally, crown scorch from fires in savannas, woodlands and forests causes tree stress and death across diverse taxa. The term crown scorch, however, is inconsistently and ambiguously defined in the literature, causing confusion and conflicting interpretation of results. Furthermore, the underlying mechanisms causing foliage death from fire are poorly understood. The consequences of crown scorch – alterations in physiological, biogeochemical and ecological processes and ecosystem recovery pathways – remain largely unexamined. Most research on the topic assumes the mechanism of leaf and bud death is exposure to lethal air temperatures, with few direct measurements of lethal heating thresholds. Notable information gaps include how energy transfer injures and kills leaves and buds, how nutrients, carbohydrates, and hormones respond, and what physiological consequences lead to mortality. We clarify definitions to encourage use of unified terminology for foliage and bud necrosis resulting from fire. We review the current understanding of the physical mechanisms driving foliar injury, discuss the physiological responses, and explore novel ecological consequences of crown injury from fire. From these elements, we propose research needs for the increasingly interdisciplinary study of fire effects.

Wildland fuels, defined as the combustible biomass of live and dead vegetation, are foundational to fire behavior, ecological effects, and smoke modeling. Along with weather and topography, the composition, structure and condition of wildland fuels drive fire spread, consumption, heat release, plume production and smoke dispersion. To refine inputs to existing and next-generation smoke modeling tools, improved characterization of the spatial and temporal dynamics of wildland fuels is necessary. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models that resolve fire–atmosphere interactions offer a promising new approach to smoke prediction. CFD models rely on three-dimensional (3D) characterization of wildland fuelbeds (trees, shrubs, herbs, downed wood and forest floor fuels). Advances in remote sensing technologies are leading to novel ways to measure wildland fuels and map them at sub-meter to multi-kilometer scales as inputs to next-generation fire and smoke models. In this chapter, we review traditional methods to characterize fuel, describe recent advances in the fields of fuel and consumption science to inform smoke science, and discuss emerging issues and challenges.

Methods to accurately estimate spatially explicit fuel consumption are needed because consumption relates directly to fire behavior, effects, and smoke emissions. Our objective was to quantify sparkleberry (Vaccinium arboretum Marshall) shrub fuels before and after six experimental prescribed fires at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. We used a novel approach to characterize shrubs non-destructively from three-dimensional (3D) point cloud data collected with a terrestrial laser scanner. The point cloud data were reduced to 0.001 m–3 voxels that were either occupied to indicate fuel presence or empty to indicate fuel absence. The density of occupied voxels was related significantly by a logarithmic function to 3D fuel bulk density samples that were destructively harvested (adjusted R2 = .32, P < .0001). Based on our findings, a survey-grade Global Navigation Satellite System may be necessary to accurately associate 3D point cloud data to 3D fuel bulk density measurements destructively collected in small (submeter) shrub plots. A recommendation for future research is to accurately geolocate and quantify the occupied volume of entire shrubs as 3D objects that can be used to train models to map shrub fuel bulk density from point cloud data binned to occupied 3D voxels.

The realm of wildland fire science encompasses both wild and prescribed fires. Most of the research in the broader field has focused on wildfires, however, despite the prevalence of prescribed fires and demonstrated need for science to guide its application. We argue that prescribed fire science requires a fundamentally different approach to connecting related disciplines of physical, natural, and social sciences. We also posit that research aimed at questions relevant to prescribed fire will improve overall wildland fire science and stimulate the development of useful knowledge about managed wildfires. Because prescribed fires are increasingly promoted and applied for wildfire management and are intentionally ignited to meet policy and land manager objectives, a broader research agenda incorporating the unique features of prescribed fire is needed. We highlight the primary differences between prescribed fire science and wildfire science in the study of fuels, fire behavior, fire weather, fire effects, and fire social science. Wildfires managed for resource benefits (“managed wildfires”) offer a bridge for linking these science frameworks. A recognition of the unique science needs related to prescribed fire will be key to addressing the global challenge of managing wildland fire for long-term sustainability of natural resources.

As LiDAR datasets increase in availability and spatial extent, demand is growing for analytical frameworks that allow for robust comparison and interpretation among ecosystems. We utilize data-driven classification in a hierarchical design to estimate forest structure classes with parsimony, flexibility, and consistency as priorities. We use an a priori selection of six input features derived from small-footprint (32 cm), high density (17 returns/m2) airborne LiDAR: four L-moments to describe the vertical distribution of canopy structure, canopy density as a measure of vegetation coverage, and standard deviation of canopy density to characterize within-cell horizontal variability. We identify 14 statistically-separated meta-classes characterizing six ecoregions over 168,117 ha in Montana, USA. Meta-classes follow four general vertical shapes: tall and continuous, short-single strata, tall-single strata, and broken strata over short strata. Structure classes that dominate locally but are rare overall are also identified. The approach outlined here allows for intuitive comparison and assessment of forest structure from any number of landscapes and forest types without need for field training data.

Understanding fine-scale variability in understory fuels is increasingly important as physics-based fire behavior models drive needs for higher-resolution data. Describing fuelbeds 3Dly is critical in determining vertical and horizontal distributions of fuel elements and the mass, especially in frequently burned pine ecosystems where fine-scale fuels arrangement drives fire intensity and resulting fire effects. Here, we describe research involving the use of highly resolved 3D models. We create fuelbeds using individual grass, litter, and pinecone models designed from field measurements. These fuel models are distributed throughout the fuelbed to replicate fuel distribution in rectified nadir photography taken for each plot. The simulated fuelbeds are converted into voxel arrays and biomass is estimated from calculated surface area between mesh vertices for each voxel. Wildland fire radiant energy emission is one of the only measurements of combustion that can be made at high temporal and spatial resolutions. Furthermore, spatially and temporally explicit measurements are critical for making inferences about ecological fire effects. Although the correlation between fire frequency and plant biological diversity in frequently burned coniferous forests is well documented, the ecological mechanisms explaining this relationship remains elusive. Uncovering these mechanisms will require highly resolved, spatially explicit fire data (Loudermilk et al. 2012). While operational fire severity products inform fire management decisions in Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA), managers have expressed the need for better quantification of the consequences of severity, specifically forest structure. In this study we computed metrics related to the forest structure from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data and investigated the influence that fires that burned in the decade previous had on forest structure on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We found that fire severity best explains the occurrence of structure classes that include canopy cover, vertical fuel distribution, and surface roughness. In general we found that high fire severity resulted in structure types that exhibit lower canopy cover and higher surface roughness. Areas that burned more frequently with lower fire severity in general had a more closed canopy and a lower surface roughness, with less brush and less conifer regeneration. In a random forests modeling exercise to examine the relationship between severity and structure we found mean canopy height to be a powerful explanatory variable, but still proved less informative than the three-component structure classification. We show that fire severity not only impacts forest structure but also brings heterogeneity to vegetation types along the elevation gradient on the Kaibab plateau. This work provides managers with a unique dataset, usable in conjunction with vegetation, fuels and fire history data, to support management decisions at GRCA.

Vegetation structure is an important factor that influences wildlife-habitat selection, reproduction, and survival. However, field-based measurements of vegetation structure can be time consuming, costly, and difficult to undertake in areas that are remote and/or contain rough terrain. Light detection and ranging (lidar) is an active remote sensing technology that can quantify three-dimensional vegetation structure over large areas and thus holds promise for examining wildlife-habitat relationships. We used discrete-return airborne lidar data acquired over the Black Hills Experimental Forest in South Dakota, USA in combination with field-collected vegetation and bird data to assess the utility of lidar data in quantifying vegetation structural characteristics that relate to avian diversity, density, and occurrence. Indices of foliage height diversity calculated from lidar data were positively and significantly correlated with indices of bird species diversity, with the highest correlations observed when foliage height diversity categories contained proportionally more foliage layers near the forest floor (

The success of a local maximum (LM) tree detection algorithm for detecting individual trees from lidar data depends on stand conditions that are often highly variable. A laser height variance and percent canopy cover (PCC) classification is used to segment the landscape by stand condition prior to stem detection. We test the performance of the LM algorithm using canopy height model (CHM) smoothing decisions and crown width estimation for each stand condition ranging from open savannah to multi-strata stands. Results show that CHM smoothing improves stem predictions for low density stands and no CHM smoothing better detects stems in dense even-aged stands, specifically dominant and co-dominant trees (R 2 � 0.61, RMSE � 20.91 stems with smoothing; R 2 � 0.85, RMSE � 46.02 stems with no-smoothing; combined smoothed CHM for low density and unsmoothed CHM for high density stands R 2 � 0.88, RMSE � 28.59 stems). Structural and functional analyses of ecosystems benefit when high accuracy vegetation coverages can be derived over large areas. In this study, we utilize IKONOS, Landsat 7 ETM+, and airborne scanning light detection and ranging (lidar) to quantify coniferous forest and understory grass coverages in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) dominated ecosystem in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Linear spectral mixture analyses of IKONOS and ETM+ data were used to isolate spectral endmembers (bare soil, understory grass, and tree/shade) and calculate their subpixel fractional coverages. We then compared these endmember cover estimates to similar cover estimates derived from lidar data and field measures. The lack of independent, quality-assured field data prevents scientists from effectively evaluating and advancing wildland fire models. To rectify this, scientists and technicians convened in the southeastern United States in 2008, 2011 and 2012 to collect wildland fire data in six integrated core science disciplines defined by the fire modelling community. These were fuels, meteorology, fire behaviour, energy, smoke emissions and fire effects. The campaign is known as the Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiment (RxCADRE) and sampled 14 forest and 14 non-forest sample units associated within 6 small replicate (,10 ha) and 10 large operational (between 10and1000ha)prescribedfires.Precampaignplanningincludedidentifyinghostingagenciesreceptivetoresearchandthe development of study, logistics and safety plans. Data were quality-assured, reduced, analysed and formatted and placed into a globally accessible repository maintained by the US Forest Service Research Data Archive. The success of the RxCADRE project led to the commencement of a follow-on larger multiagency project called the Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE). This overview summarises the RxCADRE project and nine companion papers that describe the data collection, analysis and important conclusions from the six science disciplines. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) was used to collect spatially continuous measurements of fuelbed characteristics across the plots and burn blocks of the 2012 RxCADRE experiments in Florida. Fuelbeds were scanned obliquely from plot/block edges at a height of 20 m above ground. Pre-fire blocks were scanned from six perspectives and four perspectives for post-fire at ~2 cm nominal spot spacing. After processing, fuel height models were developed at one meter spatial resolution in burn blocks and compared with field measurements of height. Spatial bias is also examined. The resultant fuel height data correspond closely with field measurements of height and exhibit low spatial bias. They show that field measurements of fuel height from field plots are not representative of the burn blocks as a whole. A translation of fuel height distributions to specific fuel attributes will be necessary to maximise the utility of the data for fire modelling.

Estimating forest structure and stand density using remotely sensed data is important for a wide range of scientific and management goals, including assessing biogeochemical budgets (e.g. aboveground carbon storage) and determining the susceptibility of an area to catastrophic fires. The objective of this study is to determine relationships among ground-collected forest structure data, high resolution IKONOS imagery, and airborne scanning LiDAR collected at a ponderosa. pine (Pinus ponderosa) dominated site in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Ground data were collected in the summer of 2001 along four 10/spl times/140 meter belt transects. IKONOS imagery was obtained over the site on July 28, 2000, and airborne scanning discrete-return LiDAR was acquired at a nominal 2 meter post spacing (56 cm beam footprint diameter) on October 26, 2001. No thinning or fire activity occurred at the site between data collection dates. Transect data were subdivided into 10/spl times/10 meter plots and co-registered with the IKONOS and LiDAR data for analyses. A combination of IKONOS multispectral and panchromatic data was used to select image endmembers (i.e. spectrally "pure" components) of bare soil, open grass, and tree/shade. In 80% of the plots, LiDAR-derived first return canopy height agreed with field-measured maximum tree height to within 20%. On average, LiDAR-derived first return canopy height underestimated field measured maximum tree height by 3.7%. Effective tree canopy leaf area index (LAI/sub e/, a measure of canopy cover fraction) ranged from 0.3 to 2.5 among the plots.
