Abstract

A breeding population of red—shouldered hawks (Buteo lineatus) along the Patuxent River in central Maryland was studied during the interval 1943—71. Numbers of breeding pairs remained unchanged or increased on the PWRC (Patuxent Wildlife Research Center) and an adjoining area where habibat was not altered. A reduction in breeding pairs occurred on the third study area where large portions of the habitat had been destroyed. Basic information on 74 nests was obtained and the annual number of breeding pairs on the PWRC ranged from a low of four to a high of nine during the study. Nesting success of this highly territorial species decreased significantly as the distance between adjacent nest sites decreased (Errington's principle of inversity). Since 1960, the recruitment rate during high density years was 1.34 young fledged per pair as opposed to 1.95 during optimum (1943 and 1947 levels) density years. Abstract

Reducing the exposure of children and young people to the marketing of unhealthy foods is a core strategy for reducing the high overweight and obesity prevalence in this population. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has recently reviewed its self-regulatory codes and proposed a revised single code on advertising to children. This article evaluates the proposed code against eight criteria for an effective code, which were included in a submission to the ASA review process from over 70 New Zealand health professors. The evaluation found that the proposed code largely represents no change or uncertain change from the existing codes, and cannot be expected to provide substantial protection for children and young people from the marketing of unhealthy foods. Government regulations will be needed to achieve this important outcome.

8. The SNAP-50/SPUR Program Presented at the Third Biennial Aerospace Power Systems Conference, Philadelphia, Pa., September 1-4, 1964 (not preprinted). Note: This paper presents the status of the SNAP-50/SPUR Program at the time of the AIAA Conference in Philadelphia, September 1964. During 1965, it was decided to disband the Program Office and, instead, transfer responsibility on a basic technology level (as contrasted with a technology demonstration program) to the Livermore Laboratories of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Representatives of that organization will have to speak for the new program as it develops. For this reason, references in this article to future work no longer represent existing plans. They are included for completeness

Abstract

The concept behind the SNAP-50/SPUR nuclear-electric space powerplant is presented and the present status of the program is reviewed. It is found that a suitable technological base already exists from which an orderly program can proceed initially to feasibility demonstrations of the reactor and power conversion components and ultimately to a demonstration of an experimental powerplant. Nuclear-electric powerplants based upon this technology can have a variety of applications in the national space program beyond 1975.

Abstract

Gizzards of 934 sora rails (Porzana carolina) collected in Maryland (767) and Missouri (167) were examined for ingested shot. Ingested shot were found in 12.3 percent of the Maryland sample and 1.8 percent of the Missouri birds. Individual Maryland birds had ingested up to 28 pellets. None of the lead pellets examined was larger than a No. 71/ shot. Maryland ingestion rates did not differ by age or sex, but significant differences between collection areas, groups of years, and collection periods within years were indicated. This exploratory work points out a potential lead poisoning prob- lem among sora rails. J. WILDL. MANAGE. 39(3):514-519 Although the incidence of ingested lead shot and knowledge of its adverse effects have been well documented for many Anat- idae, most non-waterfowl reports are based on small samples, and evidence of the effects of lead shot is largely circumstantial.
