Published findings of opinion polls are an important part of the political coverage before elections. Thus, researchers have long investigated whether the perceived popularity of political parties can lead to even more voters following this majority. However, empirical findings on this so-called political bandwagon effect are mixed. In the present paper, we integrate theories from political science and social psychology to explain these inconsistencies through social class as a potential moderating variable. Based on previous findings regarding consumer decisions, we hypothesized that bandwagon effects are greater among voters with lower social class. To investigate this hypothesis, we combined data from the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) Rolling Cross-Section 2021, which was collected over the 55 days before the 2021 German federal election, with the results of published preelection polls. Using separate multilevel models for each of the parties, we found no evidence for bandwagon effects. Only for the Social Democratic Party were poll results related to voting intentions assessed on the following day, suggesting that polls might have contributed to the party's electoral success. However, there was no evidence for a moderation of bandwagon effects by voters' social class. Accordingly, we could not resolve the mixed findings in this field of research. Daher wird seit Langem untersucht, ob die aufgrund von Umfrageergebnissen wahrgenommene Popularität politischer Parteien dazu führen kann, dass sich Wählende der scheinbaren Mehrheit anschließen. Die empirischen Ergebnisse zu diesem sogenannten politischen Bandwagon-Effekt sind jedoch gemischt. Im vorliegenden Artikel haben wir Theorien aus der Politikwissenschaft und der Sozialpsychologie integriert, um diese Unstimmigkeiten durch den sozialen Status als mögliche moderierende Variable zu erklären. Auf der Grundlage früherer Erkenntnisse zu Konsumentscheidungen stellten wir die Hypothese auf, dass Bandwagon-Effekte bei Wählenden mit niedrigerem sozialem Status größer ausfallen. Zur Untersuchung dieser Hypothese kombinierten wir Daten der German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) Rolling Cross-Section-Wahlkampfstudie 2021, die in den letzten 55 Tagen vor der Bundestagswahl 2021 durchgeführt wurde, mit Umfrageergebnissen, die in diesem Zeitraum veröffentlicht wurden. In separaten Mehrebenenmodellen für jede der Parteien zeigte sich keine Evidenz für Bandwagon-Effekte. Lediglich für die SPD standen die Umfrageergebnisse in Zusammenhang mit der am Folgetag berichteten Wahlabsicht, was darauf hindeutet, dass die Umfragen zum Wahlerfolg der Partei beigetragen haben könnten. Wir fanden jedoch keine Evidenz für eine Moderation der Bandwagon-Effekte durch den sozialen Status der Wählenden. Dementsprechend konnten wir die gemischten Ergebnisse in diesem Forschungsfeld nicht auflösen. Unsere Ergebnisse weisen auf wichtige offene Fragen in der Forschung zu Bandwagon-Effekten in Mehrparteiensystemen sowie zu Effekten des sozialen Status in Deutschland hin.

The ascendency of Jair Bolsonaro to the presidency of Brazil in 2018 put the role of traditional media companies and journalists under the spotlight. Bad news or opinions against his government have been officially treated as fake, inaccurate, or false information. In this context, data show a decrease in news trust and growing news consumption through platforms. According to the 2021 Reuters Institute report on news trust, only 21% of Brazilians trust the press as an institution, with 71% using social media platforms to be informed. As part of a broad and complex crisis of the traditional intermediary model, several journalists appeared in the Brazilian public sphere as influencers on social media platforms such as Twitter. Based on a qualitative perspective, this article aims to research the role of journalists as political influencers and their use of Twitter to express their voices. A sample of 10 journalists with more than 10,000 followers on Twitter, five working for traditional media and five from native digital media, were interviewed in depth. We realized that they use their digital capital in two political directions. On the one hand, as part of a digital strategy promoted by media outlets to gain attention and call the audience, journalists share their spots and comments on daily issues. On the other hand, in a polarized political context, journalists have found Twitter a means to express their voices in a context of increasing violence and restrictions on free expression among this collective.

However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern about the predominance of negative news and content, which can have detrimental effects on the overall well-being of individuals and the development of a cohesive society. This study explores strategies and approaches to enhance positivity in mass media for the betterment of nations. It investigates the potential benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with promoting positivity through various media channels. This paper provides recommendations for media organizations, policymakers, and society at large to cultivate a more positive media landscape that contributes to nation building.

This article sets out to examine how the use of social spaces, namely hawker centres, has contributed to community wellbeing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using an extensive thematic analysis of online conversations, we have identified that the use of social spaces can have a positive influence on individual, relational and social wellbeing. Access to social spaces during stressful events contributes to the feeling of normalcy, supports routines and structured activities, encourages responsible behaviours, facilitates social connectedness, and helps maintain community resilience. We present a new framework for urban social space characterisation containing three dimensions: coaction, copresence, and colocation (the three Cs). Here, coaction is associated with better visibility of community practices, copresence enhances the sense of connectedness, and colocation is concerned with the use of spatial design factors for influencing movement and interactions. The framework is central to our understanding of social space and its impact on wellbeing. Underpinning the three Cs is the notion of the integration of policy, community wellbeing, and various urban agendas. The findings were considered in terms of their relevance for social space development in Singapore.

Young people spend an increasing amount of time in front of a screen, developing new forms of content consumption and production. In this context, the so-called YouTubers emerge. They are the new actors of the information society, who acquire prominence specially in the creation of audiovisual content. This article studies the narrative of YouTubers and the media competition behind the process. To accomplish this task we have selected the 10 most relevant young YouTubers in the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru), ranked by number of followers. Their products were analyzed with the following criteria: the narrative that they use, the impact that they generate, and the media competence that they demonstrate. The research we have made is descriptive and uses a mixed-methods approach, which employs technical datasheets that collect general information on the channels studied and the impact of their accounts. In general terms, we have observed that the videos contemplate new standards, which are not related to the contents of traditional media; the narrative is self-referential and through it, YouTubers manage to identify with niches of younger audiences, that can see in them similar life experiences. An interesting aspect is that a good part of the language used is violent and even foul, considering that young people are a vulnerable population group on the internet. Finally, the use and mastery of technological tools is evident on YouTubers, as well as the interest in self-training in content production processes.

In Germany, schools are largely responsible for adolescents’ career development. Corresponding interventions in career guidance must take into account various endogenous and exogenous factors of individualized development to foster successful post‐school transitions. Parents, in particular, are one of the most significant influencing factors when it comes to shaping after‐school plans usually having a highly positive effect along with teacher support. Children in one‐parent families constitute a group that has received little attention so far in the context of career guidance analysis. They are at a higher risk of social decline into precarious circumstances and of living in families with lower education levels as well as less parental care time. In addition, one‐parent families more often report that they are unable to adequately support their children concerning career development, ultimately impacting the children’s post‐school transition. Based on the theoretical model of career competence, a sample from eight German schools (N = 1998) is used to investigate to what extent adolescents in one‐parent families differ from their peers in other family compositions regarding both support and development of career competence. Each school’s location and teacher support are included in the calculations. This study shows that adolescents in one‐parent families display below‐average levels concerning three of the analysed facets (occupational knowledge, exploration, and self‐regulation).

Our study stresses the importance of developing understandable and easily recognizable ad disclosures for adolescents as a specific target group of social media influencer (SMI) advertising. A comprehensive advertising literacy concept that includes a cognitive, performative, and attitudinal component builds the theoretical background of the present research. We examine the effectiveness of ad disclosure in the native language of adolescent Instagram users, explore their understanding of the economic mechanism behind SMIs’ advertising activities, and their skepticism toward sponsored content. Furthermore, we analyze the role that sponsorship transparency on Instagram stories plays in adolescents’ responses to advertising. A three-level between-subjects survey-based experimental design (manipulating the absence of ad disclosure versus ad disclosure in the participants’ native language versus standardized paid partnership ad disclosure in English) was conducted online with female adolescent participants (N = 241) in a European country. Findings showed that adolescents who understand the economic model behind SMI advertising have positive intentions toward the SMI and intend to spread online information about the promoted brand. However, even if ad disclosure made in the adolescents’ native language improved ad recognition, such knowledge did not result in more sophisticated defense mechanisms in the form of critical evaluations of the ads.

Whereas personal expression has become a core practice of journalism whose merits can include greater attention to context and interpretative analysis, these freedoms from the constraints of traditional broadcast conventions can pose serious risks, including the ideological hijacking of journalism by partisan actors. In popular right-wing podcasts, such as those hosted by Ben Shapiro and Dan Bongino, the element of opinion amplifies the tendency of the podcast medium to relegate news to a secondary concern behind the emotional impact. Not only do podcasters like Shapiro and Bongino contribute to a fractured media environment of hyper-partisan news and commentary, but they also utilize social media platforms and transmedia networks to undermine traditional journalism and replace it with an alternative conservative media ecosystem—a multiplatform, full-service clearinghouse of news and commentary afforded by the publishing capabilities of the internet and the distribution algorithms of social media platforms like Facebook. This study charts the evolution of conservative audio production, from the influential work of talk radio star Rush Limbaugh through the latest innovations by conservative podcasters, as exemplified by Shapiro and Bongino. Our study builds on previous scholarship on metajournalistic discourse to examine how right-wing podcasters use exclusionary language to delegitimize the institution of journalism and offer a self-contained, ideologically conservative version of journalism as a replacement.

This study takes an empirical dive into the enormous use of ethnic and cultural appeal as an emerging advertising trend in Nigeria, using Ebonyi state and the Hero Lager as case studies. A survey research method was adopted, and a structured questionnaire was used to gather responses from 383 respondents. The purposive sampling method was used to select the respondents who filled out the questionnaire. The study's findings reveal that most Hero Lager consumers are significantly aware of the use of ethnocentrism by the brand in their billboard advertising and agree they patronise the Hero beer brand based on ethnocentricity. This study establishes that ethnocentric billboard advertising messages significantly influence product consumption in Nigeria, especially on the Hero Lager beer brand. As a result of the findings, the researchers recommend that manufacturers should adopt the ethnocentric advertising approach to increase product sales and that since the brand's use of ethnocentric advertising messages has recorded huge success in Ebonyi state – an Igbo-speaking part of Nigeria, they should extend the application of this advertising strategy to other ethnic regions as a way of enhancing brand awareness and ensuring optimal dominance in the Nigerian market.

Ohne Zweifel hat sich Kandinsky für solche Korrespondenzen zwischen Kunst und Philosophie interessiert, die er in seiner Farb-Form-Theorie reflektiert hat. Die Rätselhaftigkeit seiner verabsolutierten Kunst bietet immer noch neue Inhalte, die die Reflexionen von Kandinsky selbst überschreiten. Der Betrachter hat das Gefühl, dass einerseits in seinen Bildern die gesamte Zeit, in der sie entstanden sind, einfließt. Andererseits spielt das Kunstwerk die Rolle des Kritikers und des Zeugen auch gegenüber Kandinsky. In diesem Text wird neben Einflüssen islamischer Kalligraphie in seiner Kunst auf die Frage eingegangen, inwiefern sich Kandinsky von den Philosophen seiner Zeit und vor allem von Friedrich Nietzsche beeinflussen ließ. Nietzsche, der sich mit der metaphysischen Krise und den Symptomen im 19. Jahrhundert beschäftigte, hat auf die Kunst gesetzt. Von der Kunst kann das Subjekt die Kindheit, die eine künstlerische beziehungsweise ironische Qualität hat und für die Lebensführung des modernen Subjekts relevant ist, lernen. Wie zeigt sich dies in Kandinskys Werk und welche Unterschiede können zwischen den beiden Denkern (Kunstphilosophen) entnommen werden?

Sowohl in Deutschland als auch in ganz Europa ist seit einigen Jahren ein wachsender Trend zu autoritären, demokratie- und menschenfeindlichen Denk- und Handlungsweisen zu verzeichnen. Trotz einer angenommenen hohen Sensibilität gegenüber solchen Positionen ist eine Einflussnahme auch auf die Soziale Arbeit und ihre Akteure nicht ausgeschlossen. Die Studie "Die extreme Rechte in der Sozialen Arbeit in MV" (Laufzeit 06/2020-07/2021) untersucht die Versuche der Einflussnahme extrem rechter Diskurse und Akteure auf die bzw. innerhalb der Sozialen Arbeit in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern systematisch mithilfe eines Mixed-Methods-Ansatzes. Der Artikel stellt die Ergebnisse der Studie sowie ihre methodische Umsetzung dar und analysiert die empirischen Zugänge und methodischen Möglichkeiten der Wissenschaft Sozialer Arbeit in Hinblick auf eigene Beiträge zur Rechtsextremismusforschung. Both in Germany and throughout Europe, there has been a growing trend towards authoritarian, anti-democratic and anti-human ways of thinking and acting for some years now. Despite an assumed high sensitivity towards such positions, an influence on social work and its professionals cannot be ruled out. The study "The far right in social work in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania" (06/2020-07/2021) systematically investigates the attempts of far right discourses and actions to influence social work in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania using a mixed methods approach. The article presents the results of the study as well as its methodological implementation. Furthermore, it analyses the empirical approaches and methodological possibilities of social work with regard to its own contributions to right-wing extremism research.

Purpose Drawing on the example of car manufacturer Tesla and its early investor Elon Musk, the purpose of this paper is to explore the connection between the personal communication activities of influential entrepreneurs on social media, the emergence of parasocial interactions (PSIs) and the related communication outcomes for the company. Design/methodology/approach This paper conducted an online survey, recruiting 207 participants via purposive sampling. Partial least square path modeling and an independent t-test were conducted to test hypotheses. Findings The results of this paper show that following entrepreneurs’ personal social media activities amplifies PSIs, which in turn positively impact the company's communication outcomes. Organization–public relationships and purchase intentions are improved by PSI. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies that connects the personal and the organizational level in exploring entrepreneurial marketing. The results show that Elon Musk acts as an influential entrepreneur to effectively promote communication outcomes for Tesla. This paper illuminates the potential of entrepreneurs’ personal social media activities to support the success of their ventures.

Future scenarios for the war in Ukraine explore how the use of information could affect the cohesion of Russia and of the West in the medium term. The four possible variations of Russian/Western cohesion - high/high, low/high, high/low, low/low - indicate how each side would define the outcome of the conflict. These possible outcomes, in turn, generate lessons about how a liberal West might use information to tip the scales on an autocratic Russia.

How and under what conditions does the European Union (EU) shape processes of institution building in other regional organizations? Interorganizational Diffusion in International Relations: Regional Institutions and the Role of the European Union develops and tests a theory of interorganizational diffusion in international relations that explains how successful pioneer organizations shape institutional choices in other organizations by affecting the institutional preferences and bargaining strategies of national governments. The author argues that Europe's foremost regional organization systematically affects institution building abroad, but that such influence varies across different types of organizations. Mixing quantitative and qualitative methods, it shows how the EU institutionally strengthens regional organizations through active engagement and by building its own institutions at home. Yet, the contractual nature of other regional organizations bounds this causal influence; EU influence makes a distinguishable difference primarily in those organizations that, like the EU itself, rest on an open-ended contract. Evidence for these claims is drawn from the statistical analysis of a dataset on the institutionalization of 35 regional organizations in the period from 1950 to 2017 as well as detailed single and comparative case studies on institutional creation and change in the Southern African Development Community, Mercosur, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In northern Nigeria, there are cultural and religious pressures on girls to marry early. Up to 43% of girls in Nigeria are married before 18, rising as high as 87% in the northwest. The study, using a mixed method approach, examines behaviours of community members towards adolescent girls’ time of marriage with perspectives from adolescent girls, faith leaders, and community members. The study found that the practice of early marriage exists in the areas studied: 35% of survey respondents had one or more daughters married before the age of 18, although most community members believed that a girl should be married when she is “mature”. Only 9.6% of survey respondents noted that they would never marry off an underage daughter. As major stakeholders in multi-component interventions, the study identifies the crucial roles of faith leaders in efforts to reduce the practice of early marriage in northern Nigeria.

Zusammenfassung Nudging ist seit knapp einer Dekade eine viel diskutierte Technik zur Beeinflussung des menschlichen Verhaltens. Angetreten mit der Ambition, das Leben der Menschen durch gezielte Entscheidungsarchitektur zu verbessern, findet es mittlerweile in unterschiedlichsten gesellschaftlichen Bereichen Anwendung. Um die Konsequenzen dieser Umkonfiguration des Sozialen identifizieren zu konnen, bedarf es Forschung. Indem eine Verbindung zwischen nudging und einer Statusverschiebung von Privatheit postuliert wird, versucht diese Arbeit dem Forschungsbedarf theoretisch beizukommen. Dazu wird das von Susan Leigh Star eingefuhrte Konzept des Grenzobjekts mit Michel Foucaults Uberlegungen zur Gouvernementalitat der Gegenwart verknupft, um zu plausibilisieren, dass nudging unter gegenwartigen gesellschaftlichen Verhaltnissen traditionelle privatheitliche Normen destabilisiert. Applications of Information and Communications Technology (ICT)-driven innovations are profound in the electoral cycle. Among them, biometric technology is currently sweeping across developing countries. It is, however, only poorly adopted among rural voters. Does the use of biometric technology in the conduct of elections reconstruct rural voters’ behaviour, amid prevailing social challenges? The links between these realities and their consequences are currently less understood, and lacking in supporting literature. I argue that the public perception of biometric technology, the availability of proper infrastructure, and the distance between polling stations and the dwellings of rural voters all affect the latter's level of adoption of biometric technology. These interactions combine to produce specific modalities that shape voting behaviour and general political culture. I elicit primary data from voters in Nigeria’s remote villages, so as to predict the implications and consequences of glossing over the dimensions and magnitude of the biometric technology adaptation challenge by policymakers. I conclude by reflecting on how these interplays and interactions create "spatial differentials" in electoral outcomes/credibility, and proffer possible strategies for institutional intervention., Die Anwendungen von Innovationen im Bereich der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie (IKT) sind im Wahlzyklus von großer Bedeutung. Biometrische Technologie erobert derzeit die Entwicklungsländer. Sie wird aber von den Wählern auf dem Land nur schlecht angenommen. Ändert die Nutzung von biometrischer Technologie das Wahlverhalten der Bevölkerung auf dem Land vor dem Hintergrund sozialer Herausforderungen? Der Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Realitäten und ihren Folgen wird in der Literatur noch nicht umfassend behandelt. Der Artikel argumentiert, dass die öffentliche Wahrnehmung der biometrischen Technologie, die Verfügbarkeit einer geeigneten Infrastruktur und die Entfernung zwischen den Wahllokalen und den Siedlungen der Wähler auf dem Land allesamt beeinflussen, inwieweit die ländliche Bevölkerung solche Technologien annimmt. Dieses Zusammenspiel führt zu spezifischen Modalitäten, die das Wahlverhalten und die allgemeine politische Kultur prägen. Ich nutze Primärdaten aus abgelegenen Dörfern in Nigeria, um zu zeigen, wie politische Entscheidungsträger Herausforderungen bei der Anwendung biometrischer Technologien schönreden und welche Folgen dies hat. Abschließend betrachte ich, wie diese Wechselwirkungen und Interaktionen zu "räumlichen Unterschieden" bei Wahlergebnissen/Glaubwürdigkeit führen und biete mögliche Strategien für institutionelle Interventionen an.

Nach dem Ende des Osmanischen Reichs und der Gründung der Türkischen Republik 1923 wurde zur Transformation von Staat und Gesellschaft eine Reihe radikaler Reformen eingeleitet. Säkularisierung, Demokratisierung und Nationalisierung sollten zu einer Modernisierung der Gesellschaft führen. Eine der wichtigsten Maßnahmen galt dabei der Vereinheitlichung und Reformierung von Erziehung und Schule. Durch international bekannte Experten, ihr pädagogisches Wissen und ihre Erfahrungen erhoffte man sich Unterstützung beim Auf- und Ausbau eines nationalen Bildungswesens. Der erste der in das Land eingeladenen Bildungsexperten war John Dewey. Seine Türkeireise 1924 wie auch seine Berichte und Empfehlungen haben zu zahlreichen Forschungsarbeiten geführt, die aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven den Einfluss Deweys auf das türkische Bildungswesen zu erfassen versuchen. Der folgende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, welche Einflüsse und Wirkungen auf Bildungs- und Erziehungsvorstellungen in der Türkei Dewey zugeschrieben wurden, und überprüft diese Zuschreibungen unter methodologischen Gesichtspunkten in einem breiter angelegten transnationalen historischen Kontext. What makes a literate person? What leads to literacy gains and losses within and between individuals and countries? This paper provides new evidence that helps answer these questions. The present comparative analysis of literacy is based on large representative samples from the Survey of Adult Skills conducted in 33 countries, with 25–65 year old participants. We provide, for the first time, estimates of relative importance for a comprehensive set of experiential factors, motivations, incentives, parental influence, demands of workplace, and other predictors of influence. We sketch a configuration of factors that predicts an “ideal” reader, i.e., the optimal literacy performance. Moreover, we discover a pivotal role of the age effect in predicting variability between countries. Countries with the highest literacy scores are the ones where literacy decreases with age the most strongly. We discuss this finding against current accounts of aging effects, cohort effects and others. Finally, we provide methodological recommendations for experimental studies of aging in cognitive tasks like reading.

Past approaches to food security in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) were informed by concerns about food availability. They aimed at domestic self-sufficiency and self-sufficiency by proxy (via farmland investments abroad). These strategies have failed. Water scarcity at home increasingly compromises agricultural production. Farmland investments abroad have not matched ambitious related announcements due to a complex mixture of commercial, socio-economic and political factors. They do not contribute meaningful quantities to the Gulf countries’ food imports. The failure of such strategies has prompted a shift of focus instead towards value chain management as a means to secure food availability. Rather than trying to fight food import dependence, the Gulf countries now accept and manage it. However, malnutrition that leads to high levels of obesity and diabetes constitutes a risk factor in the face of COVID-19. Food accessibility for vulnerable population segments such as migrant labour is another issue that requires yet further policy measures, such as safety nets – whose expansion would be politically controversial if not impossible, however.

Der Effektive Altruismus (EA) ist eine im angelsächsischen Raum entstandene Philosophie bzw. Bewegung, die es für ethisch zentral hält, anderen aktiv zu helfen, indem die Anhänger so viel Gutes tun wie möglich. Das Spenden von Geld ist dabei das wichtigste Instrument. Im Fokus steht die Effektivität, die größtmögliche Wirkung einer Spende sowie eine hohe Reichweite. Einflussfaktoren auf den Spender, seine Einstellungen und Motive werden hierbei ausgeblendet und so spielen auch und gerade Emotionen im EA keine Rolle. Stattdessen werden betriebswirtschaftliche Rechnungen auf das Spenden angewandt. Darüber hinaus geht es im EA darum, ein möglichst ethisches Leben zu führen. Die Bewegung ist seit wenigen Jahren auch in Deutschland angekommen und im Begriff, sich zu verbreiten. Der Einfluss auf klassische, etablierte Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NRO), bei denen auch andere Faktoren als die reine Effektivität einer Spende im Mittelpunkt stehen, ist bisher nicht untersucht worden. Der Spendenmarkt ist durch einen hohen Wettbewerb gekennzeichnet. Ein neuer Akteur, wie der EA, könnte diesen weiter intensivieren. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es herauszufinden, welchen möglichen Einfluss der EA auf den Spender, und damit auf den Spendenmarkt, in Deutschland hat. Es wird deshalb analysiert, welche Motivation Spender antreibt und welche Leistungsmerkmale der spendenempfangenden NRO ihre Entscheidung beeinflussen. Der Fokus liegt auf privaten Spendern und engagierten Unternehmen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit besteht aus einer Literaturrecherche zum EA und stellt die theoretischen Grundlagen zum Spendenverhalten von Privatspendern und Unternehmen vor. Im Anschluss werden die aktuellen Daten des deutschen Spendenmarktes und die Trends vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil untersucht mithilfe von qualitativen Experteninterviews die hinter der Spendenhandlung stehenden Einstellungen und Motive. Die Ergebnisse der Interviews ergeben einen geringen Einfluss des EA auf die Privatspender im Allgemeinen. Im Rahmen der empirischen Untersuchung lassen sich jedoch zwei von insgesamt fünf Spendertypen nach West identifizieren, bei denen die Werte und Charakteristika des EA zumindest eine gewisse Relevanz habe. Bei den Unternehmensspendern ist der Einfluss im Vergleich noch geringer. Beide Zielgruppen messen jedoch der Wirkung ihres Engagements Bedeutung zu. Auf Grundlage des ersten und des zweiten Teils werden Handlungsempfehlungen für klassische NRO abgeleitet. Diese legen nahe, sich in einigen Aspekten des EAs zu bedienen, bedeutet von ihm zu lernen, sich jedoch in anderen Punkten gezielt von ihm abzugrenzen, um damit die eigene Position zu stärken.

This study links voter-centred and interest group perspectives to assess the role structurally powerful businesses can play in contested political issues. Revisiting the literature on business influence in politics, incumbent businesses are theorised to strategically use their structural power to influence voters’ preferences. The conceptual framework is illustrated with a case study of a direct democratic vote related to Swiss energy policy. To empirically trace the role incumbent businesses played in the run-up to the vote, the study employs a two-step approach. First, it uses Discourse Network Analysis (DNA) to examine arguments and actor coalitions in the public debate preceding the vote. Second, the DNA results inform a statistical analysis of survey data on voting behaviour. The findings suggest that incumbent businesses can use their structural power strategically to shape voting behaviour. The study stimulates the discussion about political power relationships in societies and enriches the nascent debate about phasing out unsustainable energy infrastructure. Importantly, it opens up ways to combine DNA with other methods, an avenue that shows promise for use and further refinement in future applications.

China's ties with the South Pacific - development assistance, trade, investment, involvement in the Belt and Road Initiative, and more - have grown substantially since the early years of the new century. Australia and New Zealand (NZ), the traditional dominant powers in this region, have recently upped their game in order to balance Chinese activities. The South Pacific, a huge but sparsely populated world region, is no stranger to geopolitical competition. China and Taiwan, jostling for diplomatic recognition, used to be the key protagonists. Australia's and NZ's regional dominance has been challenged by China's growing presence. China offers alternative options in terms of funding and policy to Pacific Island countries (PICs). PICs, seeking to increase their agency by diversifying political and economic relationships, generally welcome China's more intensive engagement. In the face of China's growing regional engagement, Australia and NZ have reenergised their relations with PICs, increasing aid and diplomatic efforts. Australia's in particular are driven by a strong security imperative. The unwillingness of Australia's conservative federal government to move away from coal remains a strong irritant for PICs, while NZ under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has made climate policy a defi ning strand of regional policy. Australia's and NZ's planned COVID-safe travel zone could potentially be extended to PICs. Such a move would help PICs cushion the effects of the pandemic on their economies and become an exemplar of regional lea dership. The South Pacific is facing greater geopolitical competition. Yet the region is not really on the radar of European foreign policy establishments, despite the European Union being an important cooperation partner. Increased exchanges with governmental and non-governmental actors in Australia and NZ can help foster greater understanding of the complex dynamics in the South Pacific. Such activities are, however, no substitute for deep, sustained engagement with PICs themselves.

Die steigende Bedeutung der Customer Journey wird durch Technologien und Innovationen geprägt. Neue digitale Kanäle beeinflussen die Touchpoints während des gesamten Kundenerlebnisses und stärken die Interaktion zwischen Unternehmen und KundInnen. Die Nutzung mehrerer Kanäle während der Customer Journey bietet den Unternehmen sowohl Risiken als auch Chancen, da sie von mehreren Berührungspunkten geprägt ist. Trotz steigender Bedeutung von mobilen Endgeräten neigen KonsumentInnen dazu, ihren Kaufprozess über stationäre Endgeräte durchzuführen. Dabei bezieht sich die Kaufwahrscheinlichkeit in einer Online-Umgebung auf die Bereitschaft bzw. Wahrscheinlichkeit, die Einkäufe in einem mobilen oder Online-Shop zu tätigen, und wird in der Regel an der Kauflust gemessen. Speziell der Bereich der Reisebuchungen wurde bis dato im Rahmen der Forschung kaum berücksichtigt. Die Frage, die sich dabei stellt, ist, unter welchen Umständen der Wechsel zwischen unterschiedlichen Kanälen zu einem Einfluss auf die Buchungswahrscheinlichkeit führt. Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, wurde die Auswirkung des Channel-Switching Verhaltens auf die Buchungswahrscheinlichkeit von Unterkünften erforscht. Es wurde eine empirische Studie unter 386 ÖsterreicherInnen durchgeführt. Die Mehrheit gab an, dass sie dazu bereit sind zu buchen, wenn sie von einem mobilen zu einem stationären Endgerät wechseln. Ebenso wurden funktionale, finanzielle und Sicherheitsrisiken hinsichtlich des Channel-Switching Verhaltens untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich sowohl funktionale als auch finanzielle und Sicherheitsrisiken positiv auf das Channel-Switching Verhalten auswirken. Ebenso wurde festgestellt, dass die Erfahrung mit dem Endgerät als auch die Attraktivität der Kanäle eine erhebliche Rolle spielen und das Channel-Switching Verhalten positiv beeinflussen. The increasing importance of the customer journey is shaped by technologies and innovations. New digital channels influence the touchpoints throughout the customer experience and strengthen the interaction between companies and customers. The use of multiple channels during the entire customer journey offers both risks and opportunities, as it is characterized by multiple touch points. Despite the increasing importance of mobile devices, consumers tend to purchase using stationary devices, e.g. PCs or laptops. The likelihood of buying in an online environment relates to the willingness to purchase in a mobile or online shop and is generally measured by the desire to buy. So far, little research has been done in the area of travel bookings. The question that arises is under what circumstances the change between different channels leads to a stronger or weaker influence on the booking probability. To investigate this question, this thesis deals with the effect of channel switching behavior on the booking probability for accommodations (hotels, apartments, etc.). In addition, different influencing factors are tested as moderating variables in order to investigate the reasons why certain changes in the booking probability arise. An empirical study was carried out among 386 Austrians. The majority of the people indicated that they are more willing to book if they switch from a mobile to a stationary device during their customer journey. Functional, financial and security risks related to channel switching behavior were also empirically tested. The results show that functional as well as financial and security risks have a positive effect on the channel switching behavior. Also, both the experience with regard to the use of end devices and the attractiveness of the channels play a significant role and have a positive impact on the channel switching behavior. Motivation: Budget support is the form of aid most commonly associated with recipient‐country ownership. However, a number of scholars and practitioners have criticized the approach as masking new forms of conditionality. Was budget support simply a guise for increasing donor influence in recipient countries? How can we explain the rapid shift towards budget support, as well as the rapid decline in its popularity after only a few years? Purpose: We use a bargaining framework to explain the rise and fall of budget support. Contrary to explanations that suggest that budget support was a normative decision by donors designed to increase aid effectiveness by fostering ownership, a bargaining framework emphasizes that aid policy is the result of sustained negotiations between donors and recipients. These negotiations, however, are constrained by donors' inability to deliver aid as promised. Approach: We use a Nash bargaining framework to formalize the predictions of a bargaining model. From the model, two testable predictions emerge: (1) in exchange for more credible commitments, recipient governments are willing to selectively offer donor agencies greater access to and influence over domestic policy decision-making; and (2) in exchange for such influence, donor agencies are willing to exert less pressure on recipients to be politically inclusive. We then test the implications of the model using case‐study evidence from Rwanda and Tanzania. Findings: The empirical data, based on over 80 interviews with practitioners over several periods of research in both countries, provide substantial evidence in support of the model's core assumptions and predictions. Contrary to claims that budget support increased recipient‐country ownership, interviews (identified as personal communications) suggest that, in exchange for more credible commitments, recipient governments were willing to grant donors greater access and influence. In return, donor agencies reduced demands on the recipient government regarding political inclusivity, tacitly accepting arrangements that centralized decision‐making and excluded civil society. When donor agencies could no longer provide budget support as promised, these negotiated arrangements broke down. Policy Implications: The findings challenge a common narrative that donors embraced budget support because of a normative commitment to ownership. They also demonstrate the value of a bargaining framework. To understand why particular forms of aid, like budget support, rise in popularity only to quickly fall by the wayside, we need to understand what donor agencies and recipient governments bargain over and why.

So geht in der NEXT Studie hervor, dass Arbeit immer mehr als Frustration, statt als Erfüllung wahrgenommen wird. Nach anfänglicher Motivation der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter beginnt nach und nach deren Illusion zu trüben und sie verabschieden sich in Folge irgendwann vom Unternehmen. Bei mehr als der Hälfte der Pflegepersonen zeigt sich der Wunsch nach beruflicher Veränderung. Die zentrale Frage der vorliegenden Arbeit lautet, welche Wirkungen unterschiedliche Kommunikations- und Führungsmodelle auf das affektive Commitment der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter haben. Dieser Frage wird mittels kritischer Analyse der wissenschaftlichen Literatur nachgegangen. Gespräche mit Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter stellen u. a. hohe Anforderungen an die kommunikativen Fähigkeiten einer Führungskraft. Durch konstruktive und wertschätzende Gespräche sowie dem bewussten Einsatz der richtigen Tools, kann selbst in schwierigen und anspruchsvollen Situationen (Zielvereinbarungen, Fehlverhalten, Leistungsminderung) die Mitarbeiterin oder der Mitarbeiter dazu bewegt werden, von sich aus das Verhalten anzupassen und dahingehend motiviert werden, sich mit den Unternehmenszielen zu identifizieren. In weiterer Folge werden die unterschiedlichen Kommunikationsmodelle einschließlich der körpersprachlichen Grundlagen nonverbaler Kommunikation beleuchtet. Auch die unterschiedlichen Führungstheorien und Führungsstile werden genauer betrachtet und geben Impulse zur Reflexion und Evaluation des eigenen Führungsstils. Es lässt sich im Ergebnis feststellen, dass durch attraktive Arbeitsverhältnisse, einen achtsamen Umgang sowie moderate Entlohnungen die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter nicht nur gebunden sondern ins Team zurückgewonnen werden können. For several years now, the personnel shortages in the healthcare and nursing sector have played an essential role in politics and in the media. For example, the NEXT study shows that care work is increasingly perceived as frustration rather than fulfillment. After the initial motivation of employees, their illusion gradually begins to dim and they turn their backs on the company at some point. More than half of the people working in medical care claim to see a desire for a career change. The primary question of this thesis is what effects different communication and management models have on the affective commitment of employees. This question is investigated by means of critical analysis of scientific literature. Conversations with employees place high demands on the communicative skills of a manager, among other things. Through constructive and appreciative conversations and the conscious use of the right tools, even in difficult and demanding situations (target agreements, misconduct, performance reduction) the employee can be encouraged to adapt the behavior on his own initiative and to be motivated to identify with the company's goals. Subsequently, different communication models, including body language basics of non-verbal communication, are examined. The different leadership theories and leadership styles are also looked at in more detail and provide impulses for reflection and evaluation of one's own leadership style.As a result, it can be said that attractive working conditions, respectful social interactions and moderate payment can not only lead to staff loyalty but also to the possibility to regain employees for the team. The basic prerequisite for leadership success is to express yourself clearly and intelligibly on the one hand, and on the other hand to respond to the needs of the interlocutor. Shopping-Center stehen vor der Herausforderung ihren BesucherInnen ein einzigartiges Einkaufserlebnis zu bieten. Spaß und Unterhaltung, sozialer Kontakt, Kommunikation sowie Treffen mit FreundInnen und Verwandten sind wichtige Bedürfnisse moderner KonsumentInnen. Durch hedonistische Einkaufserfahrungen, welche von positiven Emotionen geprägt sind, ergibt sich ein maßgebender Einfluss auf die Zufriedenheit mit dem Besuch einer Einkaufsstätte. Eine Shoppingbegleitung kann in diesem Zusammenhang das Einkaufserlebnis positiv beeinflussen. Vor allem FreundInnen tragen als Shoppingbegleitung vermehrt zu hedonistischen Emotionen wie Freude und Vergnügen bei. Des Weiteren stehen hedonistische Emotionen in Verbindung mit einem sogenannten Flow-Erleben. Dieses ist gekennzeichnet durch ein optimales Glücksgefühl, dem vollkommenen Aufgehen in einer Handlung sowie dem Vergessen des Zeitgefühls und entsteht vielfach auch im sozialen Kontakt. Im Marketingkontext wurde das Flow-Erleben bis dato in erster Linie im Rahmen des Online-Handels untersucht. Nur wenige wissenschaftliche Arbeiten haben sich in diesem Zusammenhang dem stationären Handel gewidmet. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat sich daher das Ziel gesetzt, den Einfluss einer Shoppingbegleitung auf das Flow-Erleben in Shopping-Centern sowie die Wirkung des Flow-Erlebens auf die Gesamtzufriedenheit, die Loyalität und den Shoppingspaß zu untersuchen. Für die Datenerhebung kam ein standardisierter Online-Fragebogen zur Anwendung. Die Ergebnisse der empirischen Untersuchung zeigen, dass FreundInnen als Shoppingbegleitung einen positiven Einfluss auf das Flow-Erleben haben und sich dieses in weiterer Folge positiv auf die Gesamtzufriedenheit, die Loyalität und den Shoppingspaß auswirkt. Das Shopping-Center-Management kann auf diese Auswirkungen reagieren, indem es durch gezielte Maßnahmen den Einkauf in Begleitung noch attraktiver macht. Shopping centers face the challenge to provide a unique shopping experience for their customers. Fun and entertainment, social contact, communication and meeting friends and relatives are important needs of the modern consumer. Hedonic shopping experiences, which are characterized by positive emotions, can strongly influence satisfaction with the visit of a shopping location. In this regard, a shopping companion can positively influence the shopping experience. Especially friends as shopping companion are creating hedonic emotions like pleasure and enjoyment. Furthermore hedonic emotions stand in close relationship with a so-called flow experience. The flow experience is an enjoyable state in which an individual is intensely engaged in an activity and completely loses the sense of time. In addition to that, a flow experience frequently occurs via social contact. Considering the context of marketing, most research papers have focused on online environments so far. Only a few studies outlined the flow experience in relation to physical retail stores. Therefore, this research paper has the objective to examine the impact of a shopping companion on the flow experience in shopping centers and the effect of a flow experience on customer satisfaction, loyalty and shopping fun. For data collection a standardized online questionnaire was used. The results of the empirical study show that friends as shopping companion have a positive impact on flow experience and that a flow experience further has a positive impact on customer satisfaction, loyalty and shopping fun. The shopping-center-management can react on these findings by setting selective measures to make shopping with companion even more attractive. This article presents an inventory and a typology of the existing and emerging economic clusters in the coastal zone of the European part of Russia. The authors hold that transboundary clustering takes priority in the Baltic coastal region — nine of the 56 clusters identified are located in the Kaliningrad region and another eight in Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad region. The authors describe major catalysts and immanent inhibitors in coastal zones. The former include a high density of coastal economies, proximity to international markets, and better logistics and communications. The inhibitors comprise geopolitical risks and institutional barriers. It is shown that the potential and prospects of transboundary clustering are affected by both global integration and disintegration patterns, coastal infrastructure, geopolitical and geoeconomic ‘neighbourhood’, cultural excellence, and business and investment environment.

The present research adds to the question on intergenerational correlation of attitudes between parents and children. So far, it is not clear whether the transmission process is purely genetic or whether parents take an active role in socializing their children. The transmission of time preferences and reciprocity is analyzed by focusing on three aspects: (1) direct transmission from parents to children; (2) the impact of prevailling attitudes in children’s surrounding environment; (3) parents' positive assortative mating. The findings support all three channels. Differences in the size of the intergenerational correlation according to family or parental characteristics suggest that the process is not purely genetic. The present analysis is of even greater importance, as the analyzed attitudes determine economic success sustainably.

This study examines how household composition and news media consumption and trust are related to attitudes towards two minority groups—immigrants and refugees—in a representative sample of the adult population (n = 6000) in Belgium, Sweden, France, and the Netherlands. We find that Swedes hold the most positive attitudes towards both groups, while the French are found to be most negative. The Belgians and Dutch hold moderate attitudes. There is also evidence that attitudes on refugees are more negative than attitudes on immigrants in Sweden and France, but not in Belgium and the Netherlands. Using structural equation modeling, we find that household composition is not directly related to attitudes, but indirect effects through socio-economic status and media consumption indicate that singles hold more negative attitudes than couples. Ausgehend vom Befähigungsansatz untersucht die vorliegende Studie den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Wohnquartier und den Lebenschancen der Bewohner_innen. Lebenschancen konzipieren wir anhand von individuell bedeutsamen Bedürfnissen und erforschen, inwiefern der sozialräumliche Kontext auf die Möglichkeiten und Wahlfreiheiten bei der Bedürfniserfüllung wirkt. Unser Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Zusammenspiel zwischen Orten/Räumen der Bedürfnisbefriedigung und den individuell verfügbaren Ressourcen, um diese nutzen zu können. Aufgrund von diversifizierten Lebenslagen ist die Wirkung des Quartiers auf seine Bewohnerschaft sehr unterschiedlich. Daher fokussieren wir benachteiligende Lebenslagen im Quartier, anstatt von 'benachteiligenden Quartieren' zu sprechen. Benachteiligungen stellen wir dort fest, wo sowohl nahräumliche Möglichkeiten der Bedürfnisbefriedigung fehlen als auch die individuellen Ressourcen, die den Zugang zu Orten/Räumen der Bedürfnisbefriedigung gewährleisten. Starting from the capability approach, the study examines the interference between neighborhood and individual life chances. We use the concept of basic needs to conceptualize life chances and analyze how a neighborhood determines the fulfillment of needs and the freedom of choice. Thus, we focus on the relation between the relevant facilities and infrastructures for the fulfillment of needs in places or spaces and the individual resources to make use of these facilities. Due to the diversity of social circumstances, neighborhoods have very different effects on their inhabitants. Instead of focusing on ‘disadvantaged neighborhoods’ we refer to disadvantaging life circumstances in neighborhoods. We particularly observe disadvantage whenever there is a lack of both, local facilities as well as individual resources.

This article analyses the way in which the digital divide affects Roma/Gitano minors. This ethnic group is a paradigmatic case among socially underprivileged groups in Spain; excluded from industrial society, they appear to be facing a similar situation in the post-industrial era. We, therefore, sought to explore the digital experiences of minors from this group in order to study social and digital exclusion/inclusion among them. The research strategy took a comprehensive approach, covering both offline and online behaviour. We focused on the results of fieldwork undertaken in Spain during 2017. In all, interviews were conducted with 17 adolescents (aged 11 to 18) as well as with several social workers who were providing support to the minors. Given that the use of technology has become a prerequisite for the welfare of children and for the development of their rights, the issue tends to centre on three main areas, commonly known as the three Ps: provision, participation, and protection. As such, the analysis of inequality was based on these areas. The findings presented in this article illustrate that the use of ICTs can contribute to empowering Roma/Gitano adolescents to improve the position they occupy as a group in the social structure.

Das Projekt Lebenschancen im Quartier erforscht den Einfluss eines Stadtviertels auf die Möglichkeiten und Wahlfreiheiten bei der Lebensgestaltung seiner Bewohner_innen. Benachteiligungen bei der Realisierung von Lebenschancen entstehen aus dem Zusammenwirken von individuell fehlenden Ressourcen und fehlenden nahräumlichen Möglichkeiten, um sich wichtige Bedürfnisse zu erfüllen. Aufgrund unterschiedlicher Lebenssituationen und individuell unterschiedlicher Bedürfnisse und Möglichkeiten zu deren Befriedigung können die Wirkungen eines Quartiers auf seine Bewohnerschaft sehr unterschiedlich ausfallen. Statt von ‚benachteiligenden Quartieren‘ zu sprechen, betrachten wir daher benachteiligende Lebenslagen und verknüpfen diese mit stadträumlichen Lebensbedingungen. Der politische Fokus liegt damit auf den Fragen, wie für Menschen in schwierigen Lebenslagen die Möglichkeiten der Bedürfnisbefriedigung im Wohnumfeld verbessert werden und wie stadträumliche Bedingungen dazu beitragen können, den Bewohner_innen eine Erweiterung ihrer Ressourcen zu ermöglichen.

Given the immense shifts the social networking sites and applications have brought about, a considerable number of researchers in the field of communication studies have turned to study different aspects of social media usage and factors influencing it. This study gathered data from 33318 US non-institutionalized citizens over 18 including 17079 females and 16239 males; they were members of web panelists of Pew, and their answers revealed that a majority of this online participants used a kind of social media. The results of this study revealed women use social media more than men, and religious people more than non-religious people. In addition, the results indicated that married people are the least users of social media in comparison with other marital groups. Our results showed that all demographics are significantly related to social media usage. But this significance can be somehow misleading because of weak practical effect sizes. Except for marital status and age Cramer’s V values are too small and their significance may have nothing to say but sensitivity to the degree of freedom.

Die internationale Staatengemeinschaft hat sich nach dem Ende der jugoslawischen Staatszerfallskriege zum Ziel gesetzt, die Region mit einem Set an Maßnahmen und institutionellen Kooperationen weitgehend in die breitere europäische Sicherheitsstruktur zu integrieren. In den letzten Jahren hat sich diese Konstellation verändert. Die führende Rolle der EU wurde zunehmend von anderen internationalen Akteuren in Frage gestellt und herausgefordert. Heute ist der Balkan wieder eine geopolitisch und sicherheitstechnisch umkämpfte Zone, in der sich auf der einen Seite die EU, die USA und die NATO und auf der anderen Seite Russland bzw. China gegenüberstehen und um Einfluss kämpfen. Angesichts dieser Verschiebungen widmet sich die vorliegende Kurzanalyse der Frage, welche strukturellen Faktoren Anfang des Jahres 2019 die Sicherheits- und Stabilitätslandschaft auf dem Balkan prägen und vor welchen neuen Herausforderungen angesichts dessen die zentralen Sicherheitsprovider, die EU und vor allem die NATO, in der Region stehen. Die Analyse geht auch der Frage nach, ob sich durch die diskutierten strukturellen Verschiebungen die Rolle Österreichs und der österreichischen Auslandseinsätze in der Region mitverändert.

The article analyses Nord Stream 2 project in terms of the national interests of Poland and Ukraine. The authors carry out comparative analysis of risks and threats which are posed by the project to the national interests of both countries in economic, political and geopolitical spheres. The probable consequences of implementation of the Russian gas initiative are discussed. Scenarios of tactical and strategic steps of Poland and Ukraine are described. These steps would allow the countries to influence the process of Nord Stream 2 project implementation and, potentially, block it; as well as allow preparing their own energy systems to new conditions which might be formed after the launch of two lines of a new Russian gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea.

The researcher looked into the factors that affected the performance of Rizal Technological University CPA board examinees on the 2012 licensure examinations to determine the intervention necessary to improve the university’s review programs. Descriptive research design was used wherein twenty-four Bachelor of Science in Accountancy graduates who took the May and October 2012 board examinations were surveyed using a validated researcher-made questionnaire. Documentary analysis was used for evaluating qualitative data. Results revealed that: student factors (interest in the accounting program, time spent for studying lessons and availing of library/internet resources in research activities) and home/family factors (family financial support, parental involvement in studies, motivation and encouragement) highly influence performance; school factors (adequacy of relevant library books and materials, adequacy of technology hardware and software, good accounting program and good accounting faculty) were perceived to have average influence; and scholarships, grade weighted averages and attendance to review courses handled by prestigious review schools were found to be positive factors in passing the board examinations. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that the regular assessment through qualifying examinations be conducted and that the pre-board/mock examinations in the review classes be strengthened.

Introduction: people within organizations are a key factor for efficiency. Thus employee empowerment has become a popular management strategy. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between psychological empowerment and organizational commitment among medical staff of a hospital in Zahedan city. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in 2013. A random sample of 172 medical employees in Khatam-ol-Anbia hospital at Zahedan city was selected and responded to items of the questionnaires using a 7-point Likert scale ranging from 1 to 7. For measuring psychological empowerment and organizational commitment, Mishra & Spreitzer’s scale and Meyer and Allen’s questionnaire were used. A higher score means a higher degree of psychological empowerment or organizational commitment. Analysis was carried out using SPSS. Results: The level of organizational commitment and psychological empowerment significantly were higher than average. There was a significant positive relationship between employees’ empowerment and their commitment to organization. Psychological empowerment was a significant predictor of organizational commitment (?=.524). Out of the five dimensions of empowerment three dimensions are significant predictors of commitment and explain 37.1% of the variance in commitment. Conclusions: Due to The positive influence of psychological empowerment on organizational commitment, programs for in-service education should focus on facilitating psychological empowerment to improve and increase organizational commitment. In this article are given the opinions by Pannonia countryside inhabitants that belong to the Republic of Serbia about some characteristics of everyday policy. The opinions are gathered by poll which was distributed by e-mail to different areas of the Province of Vojvodina. Namely, 122 participants who filled the poll correctly estimated ten stances. They were formed on the basis of the themes about which the farmers have most often discussed. Special attention was directed to differences concerning the opinion of participants of different gender and age structure, activity and political engagement. Descriptive statistics, T-test and one-factor analysis of ANOVA variance have been used for establishing the differences and were complemented by Post-hoc Tukey test. This paper could be used for improvement of connections and relationships among the politicians, policy and countryside.

The essay shows how Jane Fonda's aerobics video helped to produce a female body image that claims to differ from the normative standards given by society in a particular social segment. The so-called "aerobic body" was a hybrid of the prevailing delicate woman's body and a body which displays strength and a regular training in the form of muscles. Following selected examples, the following questions will be addressed: How was the female body represented in the videos? How did this influence the common body ideal?

There recently was a highly emotional debate in Germany regarding what to teach children about sexual plurality; different actors accuse each other of wrongful indoctrination. This paper presents a computational model based on the results of the SINUS youth study 2016 indicating that the dynamics of adolescents finding their own stance towards sexual plurality are resilient towards external pressure by clerical or government activities. Instead, civil society plays a strong role in the process of children developing their own opinions. This underlines that values in society can be reproduced between generations.

In this article, I examine some of the methodological issues present for minority scholars when conducting research with an "insider-outsider" researcher status. Utilising examples from my fieldwork, I will expose how social class, care and gender identity along with positioning have impact on the research process and analysis. Based on a study that sought to collaboratively produce knowledge about how inequality is lived and challenged, I was able to gain access and build rapport with participants with my insider working class background. With my outsider positioning as a "researcher" and "academic," I encountered more nuanced relations in the research process, showing how one can also be an insider-outsider simultaneously. My additional identity and positioning as a woman and mother became influential factors to the collaborative analysis of the findings, from which I gathered new knowledge about the intersection of class and care. In placing my identity and positioning, in terms of class, care and gender, at the centre of this discussion of methodology, I raise important questions on a personal, professional and political continuum for qualitative research and the production of collaborative knowledge and action within the field of participatory research., Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, Vol. 19 No. 1 (2018)

This paper examines the influences of candidate perceptions on Germany’s spring 2016 Lander election results. It takes a comparative approach, using a modified Michigan model on the data collected simultaneously in three Lander (Baden-Wurttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saxony-Anhalt). It explains why the Green party was successful in Baden-Wurttemberg but not in the other Lander, the impact of the major candidates, and what distinguishes the influences of the current prime ministers running for these elections. Whereas Winfried Kretschmann’s (Green party, Baden-Wurttemberg) high impact on the election results was driven mainly by a warmth dimension (sympathy), Malu Dreyer (SPD, Rhineland-Palatinate) was viewed as being competent. Both candidates were assets to their parties and co-responsible for the results. In comparison, in Saxony-Anhalt, none of the candidates were as important to the outcomes of the electoral success.

Wenn eine Aufgabe der Arbeitssoziologie darin besteht, einen Zusammenhang zwischen spezifischen Technologien und den Effekten ihres Einsatzes für Arbeit herzustellen, dann muss sie Technik vergleichend beschreiben. Das Ziel unseres Beitrages besteht darin, der Arbeitssoziologie einen Analyserahmen für Technik anzubieten, der vergleichende empirische Untersuchungen und die Formulierung theoretisch gehaltvoller Aussagen auf mittleren Abstraktionsebenen unterstützen soll. Wir positionieren technikvermittelte Beeinflussung in der Sozialtheorie als eine dritte Form der Beeinflussung neben interaktiver und strukturvermittelter Beeinflussung. Für die vergleichende Analyse solcher Beeinflussungen lässt sich das in den Science and Technology Studies entwickelte Konzept des Skripts nutzen. Vergleichsdimensionen für Skripte lassen sich aus allgemeinen Merkmalen von Beeinflussungssituationen ableiten. Wir demonstrieren die Anwendung des Vergleichsrahmens durch die Beantwortung der Frage, wie drei Installationsprogramme für verschiedene Versionen des Betriebssystems Linux die Handlungen der NutzerInnen beeinflussen. Durch den Vergleich der Skripte fokussiert unser Vergleichsrahmen bislang auf Beeinflussungsintentionen. Eine Ausweitung auf den Vergleich situativer Techniknutzung scheint aber möglich., If the sociology of work wants to discover links between specific technologies and their effects on work, it needs to comparatively analyse technologies. The aim of our contribution is to offer a comparative framework for technologies that enables comparative empirical investigations and the formulation of contributions to middle-range theories. We position technologically mediated influence as a third form of exercising influence besides interactive and structurally mediated influence. The comparative analysis of this form of influence can be based on the concept of a script, which has been developed in science and technology studies. Dimensions for the comparison of scripts can be derived from general properties of situations in which influence is exercised. We apply our comparative framework to three installation programmes for different versions of the Linux operating system and answer the question as to how these programmes influence the actions of users. The Chinese Communist Party's leadership move to drop the constitutional limits ending President Xi Jinping’s tenure after two terms have been interpreted as a long-term power grab by many international media. This view however misses a crucial point: Seen in conjunction with the Central Committee's parallel decision to elevate the National Supervision commission, the leadership's step appears in a different light: It seems, the Central Committee is finally biting the bullet and embarks on reforms to consolidate the government - from the top down. How they want to control the message and also ensure co-operation by key stakeholders in this process, remains unclear.

Nepal's post-conflict constitution-making process has seen the involvement of many international actors. While studies on democracy promotion, to this day, mainly focus on Western "donors" and international organizations, this paper looks at the role played by India in the complicated process of moving from a peace agreement to the establishment of an inclusive, democratic constitution in Nepal. More specifically, it is analysed how a powerful neighbouring democracy (India) participated in what is essentially a domestic negotiation process (constitution-making) with a view to influencing the emerging democratic regime. In terms of the issues on the negotiation table, the analysis shows that India, in pushing for an inclusive constitution, pursued the specific agenda of supporting the inclusion of the Madheshis, an ethnic group mostly living in Nepal's Terai region. In terms of negotiation strategies, the paper identifies four different ways in which India tried to influence the constitution: high-level dialogue; economic blockade; international coalition building; and targeted support of domestic oppositional forces in Nepal. Comprehensive as this negotiation strategy was, it only met with partial success. Parameters that limited India's influence included the domestic strength and legitimacy of the official Nepali position (elite alignment; popular support) as well as scepticism concerning India's role in Nepal, which was reinforced by India's overly partisan agenda., Nach Be­endigung des Bürger­kriegs in Nepal be­teiligte sich eine Viel­zahl von inter­nationalen Akteuren an der Ge­staltung des ver­fassungs­gebenden Prozesses im Land. Der Groß­teil der Forschung zu Dem­okratie­för­derung be­trachtete vor allem die Rolle west­licher Geber­staaten und inter­nationaler Or­ga­ni­sationen in diesem Prozess. Im Unter­schied dazu analysiert das vor­liegende PRIF Working Paper das En­gage­ment eines nicht-west­lichen Akteurs: Indien. Es unter­sucht die Rolle, die Indien während des Pro­zesses vom Friedens­vertrag bis hin zur Ver­ankerung einer demo­kratischen Ver­fassung in Nepal ge­spielt hat. Im Mittel­punkt steht die Frage, wie Indien als mächtiger demo­kratischer Nach­bar­staat Ein­fluss auf einen im Kern inner­staatlichen Ver­handlungs­pro­zess der Ver­fassungs­gebung Ein­fluss ge­nommen hat und was das für die Ent­wicklung eines demo­kratischen Re­gimes in Nepal be­deutete. Indien drängte im Ver­handlungs­pro­zess auf eine ver­stärkte In­klu­si­vität der Ver­fassung und sprach sich ins­be­sondere für die In­klusion der Madheshis aus, einer ethnischen Gruppierung in der ne­pa­lesischen Terai-Region. Es lassen sich vier Ver­handlungs­strategien Indiens ab­leiten: hoch­rangiger po­li­tischer Dia­log, öko­no­mische Blockade, inter­nationale Allianz­bildung, und ge­zielte Unter­stützung der inner­ne­pa­lesischen Op­position. So um­fassend die Be­mühungen Indiens auch waren, er­zielten sie nur einen Teil­erfolg. Indiens Ein­fluss wurde einer­seits be­schränkt durch die starke Le­gi­ti­mität der of­fiziellen ne­pa­lesischen Position, die so­wohl von den Eliten des Landes wie auch der Be­völkerung breit unter­stützt wurde. Anderer­seits traf ins­be­sondere der Versuch der ein­seitigen Partei­nahme durch Indien auf große Skepsis und Wider­stand.

In drei Aufsätzen gehen Vedran Dzihic, Hakan Akbulut und Cengiz Günay der Frage nach, ob die EU und die USA in den von ihnen untersuchten Ländern und Regionen - also auf dem Balkan, in der Türkei sowie in der MENA-Region - an Einfluss verlieren und von anderen Akteuren wie etwa Russland oder China verdrängt werden. Dzihic analysiert und zeichnet nach, wie die EU und die USA ihre einstige Rolle als dominante Sicherheitsprovider, größte Investoren und unangefochtene normative Role-Models auf dem Westbalkan sukzessive eingebüßt haben und einer verstärkten Konkurrenz durch insbesondere Russland und China (aber auch der Türkei) ausgesetzt sind. Parallel hierzu lässt sich eine De-Demokratisierung und Etablierung autoritärer Herrschaftsmodelle feststellen, zeigt Dzihic in seinem Papier auf. Hakan Akbulut belegt mit historischen Verweisen, dass die Beziehungen zwischen der Türkei und ihren westlichen Partnern in den letzten Dekaden beständig wechselhaft waren, während auch die Beziehungen zu Russland eine gewisse Ambivalenz aufweisen, in ihrem Potenzial beschränkt und von vielen Divergenzen gekennzeichnet sind. Er argumentiert, dass die Türkei angesichts ihrer geopolitischen Lage ihre multidimensionale Außenpolitik weiter forcieren, die westliche Dimension hierbei aber die dominante blieben wird. Er rechnet nicht mit einem Bruch mit dem Westen, sondern mit weiterhin wechselhaften Beziehungen mit konjunkturellen Höhen und Tiefen. Cengiz Günay illustriert zunächst die Verschiebungen in den Prioritätensetzungen der USA und der EU gegenüber Ländern der MENA-Region. Dem sicherheitszentrierten Zugang mit all seinen Widersprüchen und Doppelstandards in demokratiepolitischen Fragen folgten mit dem sog. Arabischen Frühling größere Anstrengungen auf Seiten der EU und der USA, die Demokratisierungsprozesse in der Region zu unterstützen. Auf europäischer Seite fehlten jedoch sowohl die Finanzmittel als auch der Enthusiasmus, um hier einen entscheidenden Beitrag zu leisten. Die normative Agenda ist inzwischen nicht ganz verschwunden, aber deutlich in den Hintergrund getreten, meint Günay, während Sicherheitsinteressen wieder in den Vordergrund gerückt sind. Außerdem sehen sich die USA und die EU mit anderen Geldgebern und Investoren in der Region konfrontiert (siehe etwa China, Katar oder Saudi Arabien), während Russland vor allem Rüstungsgüter und Nukleartechnologie anzubieten hat. Auf Seiten der USA wurden mit der Wahl Trumps ins Präsidentenamt normative Ansätze beinahe gänzlich fallengelassen. Der Trend geht hin zu "sektoralen, transaktionalen Partnerschaften" und öffnet Spielräume für andere Konkurrenten auf dem "Jahrmarkt der Möglichkeiten", was gleichzeitig die Durchsetzungskraft der Europäischen Nachbarschaftspolitik schwächt.

Schiitische militante Gruppen sind seit der Islamischen Revolution von 1979 für Tehe­ran das wichtigste Instrument, um seinen Einfluss in der arabischen Welt auszuweiten. Mit ihrer Hilfe gelingt es der iranischen Führung seit 2011, neben dem Libanon - wo die irantreue Hizbullah seit 1982 operiert - die militärische und politische Lage im Irak und in Syrien stark zu beeinflussen und auf die im Jemen zumindest einzuwir­ken. Im Libanon und im Irak haben die Milizen bereits "Staaten im Staate" aufgebaut, die die Politik beider Länder in Abstimmung mit Teheran maßgeblich mitbestimmen. In Syrien dürfte das Regime auch weiterhin auf die Milizen der Iraner angewiesen sein, da es ihm selbst an Soldaten mangelt. Im Jemen ist der Einfluss Teherans immer noch begrenzt. Doch er wächst, je länger der Krieg zwischen den Huthi-Rebellen und ihren Gegnern dort andauert. (Autorenreferat)
