We present new, wide-field, optical ($u'g'r'i'z'$) Dark Energy Camera observations covering $\sim21\,{\rm deg}^2$ centred on the nearby giant elliptical galaxy NGC5128 called "The Survey of Centaurus A's Baryonic Structures" (SCABS). The data reduction and analysis procedures are described including initial source detection, photometric and astrometric calibration, image stacking, and point-spread function modelling. We estimate 50 and 90 percent, field-dependent, point-source completeness limits of at least $u'=24.08$ and $23.62$ mag (AB), $g'=22.67$ and $22.27$ mag, $r'=22.46$ and $22.00$ mag, $i'=22.05$ and $21.63$ mag, and $z'=21.71$ and $21.34$ mag. Deeper imaging in the $u'$-, $i'$- and $z'$-bands provide the fainter limits for the inner $\sim3\,{\rm deg}^2$ of the survey, and we find very stable photometric sensitivity across the entire field of view. Source catalogues are released in all filters including spatial, photometric, and morphological information for a total of $\sim5\times10^5-1.5\times10^6$ detected sources (filter-dependent). We present deep H�� imaging of seven Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs) using the 4.1m Southern Astrophysics Research (SOAR) Telescope. The high spatial resolution of the observations allow us to study both the integrated star-formation properties of the main galaxies as well as the 2D distribution of star-forming knots in the faint tidal arms that form during interactions between the individual galaxies. We derive star-formation rates and stellar masses for group members and discuss their position relative to the main sequence of star-forming galaxies. Despite the existence of tidal features within the galaxy groups, we do not find any indication for enhanced star-formation in the selected sample of HCGs. We study azimuthally averaged H�� profiles of the galaxy disks and compare them with the g' and r' surface-brightness profiles. We do not find any truncated galaxy disks but reveal that more massive galaxies show a higher light concentration in H�� than less massive ones. We also see that galaxies that show a high light concentration in r', show a systematic higher light concentration in H��. TDG candidates have been previously detected in R-band images for 2 groups in our sample but we find that most of them are likely background objects as they do not show any emission in H��. The NGVS-IR project (Next Generation Virgo Survey - Infrared) is a contiguous near-infrared imaging survey of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. It complements the optical wide-field survey of Virgo (NGVS). The current state of NGVS-IR consists of Ks-band imaging of 4 deg^2 centered on M87, and J and Ks-band imaging of 16 deg^2 covering the region between M49 and M87. In this paper, we present the observations of the central 4 deg^2 centered on Virgo's core region. The data were acquired with WIRCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the total integration time was 41 hours distributed in 34 contiguous tiles. A survey-specific strategy was designed to account for extended galaxies while still measuring accurate sky brightness within the survey area. The average 5\sigma limiting magnitude is Ks=24.4 AB mag and the 50% completeness limit is Ks=23.75 AB mag for point source detections, when using only images with better than 0.7" seeing (median seeing 0.54"). Star clusters are marginally resolved in these image stacks, and Virgo galaxies with \mu_Ks=24.4 AB mag arcsec^-2 are detected. Combining the Ks data with optical and ultraviolet data, we build the uiK color-color diagram which allows a very clean color-based selection of globular clusters in Virgo. This diagnostic plot will provide reliable globular cluster candidates for spectroscopic follow-up campaigns needed to continue the exploration of Virgo's photometric and kinematic sub-structures, and will help the design of future searches for globular clusters in extragalactic systems. Equipped with this powerful new tool, future NGVS-IR investigations based on the uiK diagram will address the mapping and analysis of extended structures and compact stellar systems in and around Virgo galaxies., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures.
