Abstract: In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Experimental results concerning the dynamical fission of quasiprojectiles in semiperipheral collisions for the system Kr80+Ca48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four blocks of the FAZIA setup in the first physics experiment of the FAZIA Collaboration. The degree of isospin equilibration between the two fission fragments and its dependence on their charge asymmetry is investigated. The data are compared with the results of the AMD model coupled to GEMINI as an afterburner, in order to get hints about the timescale of the process.

Abstract: International audience; Profiting from previous works done with the INDRA multidetector on the description of the light response L of the CsI( Tl ) crystals to different impinging nuclei, we propose an improved ΔE−L identification-calibration procedure for Silicon–Caesium Iodide (Si–CsI) telescopes, namely an Advanced Mass Estimate ( AME ) method. AME is compared to the usual, simple visual analysis of the corresponding two-dimensional map of ΔE−E type, by using INDRA experimental data from nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions in the Fermi energy regime. We show that the capability of such telescopes to identify both the atomic Z and the mass A numbers of light and heavy reaction products, can be quantitatively improved thanks to the proposed approach. This conclusion opens new possibilities to use INDRA for studying these reactions especially with radioactive beams. Indeed, the determination of the mass for charged reaction products becomes of paramount importance to shed light on the role of the isospin degree of freedom in the nuclear equation of state [ 1,2 ].

Abstract: International audience; In nuclear thermodynamics, the determination of the excitation energy of hot nuclei is a fundamental experimental problem. Instrumental physicists have been trying to solve this problem for several years by building the most exhaustive 4π detector arrays and perfecting their calorimetry techniques. In a recent paper, a proposal for a new calorimetry, called “3D calorimetry”, was made. It tries to optimize the separation between the particles and fragments emitted by the quasiprojectile and the other possible contributions. This can be achieved by determining the experimental probability for a given nucleus of a nuclear reaction to be emitted by the quasiprojectile. It has been developed for the INDRA data. In the present work, we wanted to dissect and validate this new method of characterization of a hot quasiprojectile. So we tried to understand and control it completely to determine these limits. Using the Heavy Ion Phase Space Exploration (HIPSE) event generator and a software simulating the functioning of INDRA, we were able to achieve this goal and provide a quantitative estimation of the quality of the quasiprojectile characterization.

Abstract: Background: The isovector part of the nuclear equation of state remains partly unknown and is the subject of many studies. The degree of equilibration between the two main collision partners in heavy ion reactions may be used to study the equation of state since it is connected to isospin (N/Z) transport properties of nuclear matter. Purpose: We aim to test chemical equilibrium attainment by measuring isotopic characteristics of emitted elements as a function of impact parameter. Method: We study four Xe136,124+Sn124,112 reactions at 32 MeV/nucleon. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility. Combined (projectile+target) systems are identical for two studied reactions, therefore it is possible to study the path towards chemical equilibrium from different neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) entrance channels. The study is limited to identified isotopes detected in the forward part of the center of mass in order to focus on the evolution of projectile-like fragment isotopic content and the benefit of excellent detection performances of the forward part of the apparatus. Results: Light charged particle productions, multiplicities, and abundance ratios dependence against impact parameter are studied. It is measured to almost identical mean characteristics for the two Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions. Comparing all four studied systems it is shown that mean values evolve from projectile N/Z to projectile+target N/Z dependence. Those identical mean characteristics concern all light charged particles except He3 whose mean behavior is strongly different. Conclusions: Our inclusive analysis (no event selection) shows that N/Z equilibration between the projectile-like and the target-like is realized to a high degree for central collisions. The light charged particle production mean value difference between Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions is of the order of a few %. This slight difference could be explained by pre-equilibrium particle emission whose intensity may differ for the two reactions. This point is demonstrated using He3 mean characteristics whose production takes place before chemical equilibrium attainment. The realized N/Z balance between projectile-like and target-like does not imply a pure two-body mechanism. Indeed a midrapidity production of light charged particle does exist and its N/Z is different as compared to the projectile-like one: it is n enriched. This point is touched using He6 midrapidity production which is favored by the drift phenomenon.

Abstract: Background: We study heavy-ion reactions from barrier up to Fermi energy. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility.Purpose: We aim to determine the reaction and fusion cross sections for the reactions induced by $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}$ projectiles on $^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ targets for incident energies ranging from $8A$ to $35A$ MeV. In particular, the evaluation of the fusion and incomplete fusion cross sections is the main purpose, altogether with the comparison with the systematics of Eudes et al. [Europhys. Lett. 104, 22001 (2013)].Method: The reaction cross sections are evaluated at each beam energy with data acquired thanks to the INDRA $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ array. The events are sorted with the help of the observable ${E}_{\text{iso,max}}$. We focus therefore our study on a selected sample of events, in such a way that the fusion and incomplete fusion cross sections can be estimated.Results: We present the excitation function of reaction and fusion cross sections for the heavy and nearly symmetric system $^{129}\mathrm{Xe}+^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ from $8A$ to $35A$ MeV. For the fusion excitation function the comparison with the systematics of Eudes et al. seems to be in a fair agreement starting from the beam energy $20A$ MeV. For the lower beam energies ($8A$ and $12A$ MeV) discrepancies are observed.Conclusions: The evaluated fusionlike cross sections show a good agrement with a recent systematics for beam energies greater than $20A$ MeV. For low beam energies the cross-sectional values are lower than the expected ones. A probable reason for these low values is in the fusion hindrance at energies above or close to the barrier.

Abstract: Unstable 10C nuclei are produced as quasi-projectiles in 12C+24Mg collisions at E/A = 53 and 95 MeV. The decay of their short-lived states is studied with the INDRA multidetector array via multi-particle correlation functions. Abstract: We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy. The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for central collisions of heavy systems. Abstract: The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes, developed within the FAZIA collaboration, to fragments produced in nuclear reactions 84 Krþ 120-124 Sn at 35 A MeV, has been used to study ion identification methods. Two techniques are considered for the identification of the nuclear products in the silicon stages. The standard DEE one requires signals induced in two detection layers by ions punching through the first one. Conversely, the digital Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) allows the identification of ions stopped in the first silicon layer. The capabilities of these two identification methods have been compared for different mountings of the silicons, i.e. rear (particles entering through the low electric field side) or front (particles entering through the high electric field side) side injection. The DEE identification method gives exactly the same results in both configurations. At variance, the pulse shape discrimination is very sensitive to the detector mounting. In case of rear side injection, the identification with the ''energy vs. charge rise time'' PSA method presents energy thresholds which are significantly lower than in the case of front side injection. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. Abstract: International audience; In recent years, many efforts have been devoted to the investigation of the isospin degree of freedom in nuclear reactions. Comparing systems involving partners with different N/Z, it has been possible to investigate the isospin transport process and its influence on the final products population. This can be then related to the symmetry energy term of the nuclear EOS. From the experimental point of view, this task requires detectors able to measure both charge and mass of the emitted products, in the widest possible range of energy and size of the fragments. With this objective, the FAZIA and GARFIELD+RCo apparatus have been used with success in some recent experiments.

Abstract: Kinetic energy spectra and fragment velocity correlations, simulated by means of stochastic mean-field calculations, are successfully confronted with experimental data for single multifragmenting sources prepared at the same excitation energy per nucleon in 32 AMeV 129Xe+natSn and 36 AMeV 155Gd+natU central collisions. Abstract: The nucleus-nucleus Lie`ge intranuclear-cascade+percolation+evaporation model has been applied to the 12 C+ 197 Au data measured by the INDRA-ALADIN collaboration at GSI. After the intranuclear cascade stage, the data are better reproduced when using the Statistical Multiframentation Model as afterburner. Further checks of the model are done on data from the EOS and KAOS collaborations.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL; Current pulses induced in a silicon detector by 10 different heavy ion species at known energies around 10 AMeV have been sampled in time at high frequency. Their individual average shapes are quite well reproduced by a fit procedure based on our recent charge carrier collection treatment which considers the progressive extraction of the electrons and holes from the high carrier density zone along the ionizing particle track. This region is assumed to present a supplementary dielectric polarization and consequently a disturbe delectric field.The influence of the nature of the heavy ion on the values of the three fit parameters is analyzed.

Abstract: An efficient method of energy scale calibration for the CsI(Tl) modules of the INDRA multidetector (rings 6–12) using elastic and inelastic 12C+1H scattering at E(12C)=30MeV per nucleon is presented. Background-free spectra for the binary channels are generated by requiring the coincident detection of the light and heavy ejectiles. The gain parameter of the calibration curve is obtained by fitting the proton total charge spectra to the spectra predicted with Monte-Carlo simulations using tabulated cross section data. The method has been applied in multifragmentation experiments with INDRA at GSI.

Abstract: We study nuclear stopping in central collisions for heavy-ion induced reactions in the Fermi energy domain, between $15$ and $100$ A\,\textrm{MeV}. Using the large dataset of exclusive measurements provided by the $4\pi$ array \emph{INDRA}, we determine the relative degree of stopping as a function of system mass and bombarding energy. We show that the stopping can be directly related to the transport properties in the nuclear medium. By looking specifically at free nucleons (here protons), we present for the first time a comprehensive body of experimental results concerning the mean free path, the nucleon-nucleon cross-section and in-medium effects in nuclear matter. It is shown that the mean free path exhibits a maximum at $\lambda_{NN}=9.5 \pm 2$ \textrm{fm}, around $E_{inc}=35-40$ A\,\textrm{MeV} incident energy and decreases toward an asymptotic value $\lambda_{NN}= 4.5 \pm 1$ \textrm{fm} at $E_{inc} = 100$ A\,\textrm{MeV}. After accounting for Pauli blocking of elastic nucleon-nucleon collisions, it is shown that the effective in-medium \emph{NN} cross section is further reduced compared to the free value in this energy range. Therefore, in-medium effects cannot be neglected in the Fermi energy range. Abstract: The odd-even staggering of the yield of final reaction products has been studied as a function of proton (Z) and neutron (N ) numbers for the collisions 84 Kr + 112 Sn and 84 Kr + 124 Sn at 35 MeV/nucleon in a wide range of elements (up to Z ≈ 20). The experimental data show that staggering effects rapidly decrease with increasing size of the fragments. Moreover the staggering in N is definitely larger than the one in Z. Similar general features are qualitatively reproduced by the GEMINI code. Concerning the comparison of the two systems, the staggering in N is in general rather similar, being slightly larger only for the lightest fragments produced in the n-rich system. In contrast the staggering in Z, although smaller than that in N , is sizably larger for the n-poor system with respect to the n-rich one.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The prompt component at intermediate velocity of light charged particles is investigated. An improved coalescence model coupled to the intra-nuclear cascade code ISABEL is used to obtain light complex particle energy spectra and multiplicities as a function of impact parameter. The results are compared with experimental data from the 36Ar + 58Ni experiment at 95 MeV/nucleon, performed with the INDRA 4π detection system. The calculated prompt component is found to rather well reproduce proton spectra. For complex light charged particles the calculated components well populate the high energy part of spectra. Prompt emission can therefore explain the large transverse energies experimentally observed at mid-rapidity.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire, GANIL E209, GANIL E210; International audience; Reaction mechanisms have been studied for two nearly symmetrical systems of different total mass, between 25 and 74 AMeV. It is shown that collisions are mostly binary whatever the system mass and the bombarding energy. From the slowing-down of the partners, it is possible to establish the continuous evolution from quasielastic to (completely) damped collisions. It turns out that results are independent of the total system mass if involved energies are expressed in AMeV. The occurrence of mid-rapidity emission is also considered and may be used to establish a link between mechanisms observed at low and high bombarding energy. Part of it corresponds to a fast decay of outgoing partners.

Abstract: Multifragmentation properties measured with INDRA are studied for single sources produced in Xe+Sn reactions in the incident energy range 32-50 A MeV and quasiprojectiles from Au+Au collisions at 80 A MeV. A comparison for both types of sources is presented concerning Fisher scaling, Zipf law, fragment size and fluctuation observables. A Fisher scaling is observed for all the data. The pseudo-critical energies extracted from the Fisher scaling are consistent between Xe+Sn central collisions and Au quasi-projectiles. In the latter case it also corresponds to the energy region at which fluctuations are maximal. The critical energies deduced from the Zipf analysis are higher than those from the Fisher analysis., 30 pages, accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics A, references corrected

Abstract: Isotopic effects in spectator fragmentations following heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies are investigated using data from recent exclusive experiments with SIS beams at GSI. Reactions of 12C on 112,124Sn at incident energies 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA multidetector while the fragmentation of stable 124Sn and radioactive 107Sn and 124La projectiles was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer. The global characteristics of the reactions are very similar. This includes the rise and fall of fragment production and deduced observables as, e.g., the breakup temperature obtained from double ratios of isotope yields. The mass distributions depend strongly on the neutron-to-proton ratio of the decaying system, as expected for a simultaneous statistical breakup. The ratios of light-isotope yields from neutron-rich and neutron-poor systems follow the law of isoscaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. This is not compensated by an equivalent rise of the breakup temperatures which suggests a reduction of the symmetry term required in a liquid-drop description of the fragments at freeze-out., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, invited talk at IX International Conference on Nucleus Nucleus Collisions, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil August 28 - September 1, 2006

Abstract: A 4 pi charged particle detector array with a low velocity threshold has been used to detect the products from reactions induced by Ar-36 on Al-27 at energies ranging from 55 to 95 MeV/u. Well characterized events were selected and sorted as a function of the impact parameter. Two methods were used for sorting these events with respect to their impact parameters and three methods were compared to determine the reaction plane. The transverse momentum analysis has been found to be the best method to extract the direction of the reaction plane for this system and for the experimental set-up used here. The energy of vanishing flow for central collisions has been found to be around 90-95 MeV/u. The azimuthal distributions of mid-rapidity particles exhibit a preferential in-plane emission and no squeeze-out effect.

Abstract: Isospin transport phenomena in dissipative heavy ion collisions have been in- vestigated at Fermi energies with a beam of 84 Kr at 35AMeV. A comparison of theh Ni /Z of light and medium products forward-emitted in the centre of mass frame when the beam impinges on two different targets, the n-poor 112 Sn and the n-rich 124 Sn, is presented. Data were collected by means of a three-layer telescope with very good performances in terms of mass identification (full isotopic resolution up to Z�20 for ions punching through the first detector layer) built by the FAZIA Collaboration and located just beyond the grazing angle for both reactions. Theh Ni /Z of the products detected when the n-rich target is used is always higher than that associated to the n-poor one; since the detector was able to measure only fragments coming from the QuasiProjectile decay and/or neck emission, the observed behaviour can be ascribed to the isospin diffusion process, driven by the isospin gradient between QuasiProjectile and QuasiTarget. Moreover, for light fragments theh Ni /Z as a function of the lab velocity of the fragment is observed to increase when we move from the QuasiProjectile velocity to the centre of mass (neck zone). This effect can be interpreted as an evidence of isospin drift driven by the density gradient between the QuasiProjectile zone (at normal density) and the more diluted neck zone.

Abstract: In Ar-36 + Al-27 reactions at bombarding energies E/A from 55 to 95 MeV, the mass and excitation energy of the quasi-projectile have been reconstructed at all impact parameters. Up to excitation energies E*/A of similar to 5-6 MeV, the mean kinetic energies of Z = 1 to Z = 9 fragments are in agreement with values predicted by sequential statistical decay, Above, a collective expansion energy is needed that grows with E*/A, reaching 1 to 2.2 MeV/u, depending on the de-excitation process, at E*/A similar to 10 MeV. It decreases with the fragment charge, The dominant role of excitation energy supports the scenario of thermal expansion.

Abstract: Formation and decay of hot nuclei have been studied in Zn-64 + Ti-nat collisions between 35 and 79 MeV/nucleon. The mass and excitation energy of excited quasiprojectiles are reconstructed from the kinematical characteristics of their decay products. In central collisions, excitation energies larger than 10 MeV/nucleon are reached. Comparisons with theoretical predictions indicate that a fraction of the excitation energy is associated with an isotropic radial flow.

Abstract: Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations. Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such negative values are discussed. They could result from a more important contribution of evaporated particles with respect to the contribution of promptly emitted particles at mid-rapidity. But effects induced by the methods used to reconstruct the reaction plane cannot be totally excluded. Complete tests of these methods are presented and the origins of the ``auto-correlation'' effect have been traced back. For heavy fragments, the observed negative flow values seem to be mainly due to the reaction plane reconstruction methods. For light charged particles, these negative values could result from the dynamics of the collisions and from the reaction plane reconstruction methods as well.
