Warps are vertical distortions of the stellar or gaseous disks of galaxies. One of the proposed scenarios for the formation of warps involves tidal interactions among galaxies. A recent study identified a stellar warp in the outer regions of the south-western (SW) disk of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and suggested that it might have originated due to the tidal interaction between the LMC and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Due to the limited spatial coverage of the data, the authors could not investigate the counterpart of this warp in the north-eastern (NE) region, which is essential to understanding the global shape, nature, and origin of the outer LMC warp. In this work, we study the structure of the LMC disk using data on red clump stars from the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), which cover the entire Magellanic system. We detected a warp in the NE outer LMC disk which is deviated from the disk plane in the same direction as that of the SW outer warp, but with a lower amplitude. This suggests that the outer LMC disk has an asymmetric stellar warp, which is likely to be a U-shaped warp. Our result provides an observational constraint to the theoretical models of the Magellanic system aimed at improving the understanding the LMC-SMC interaction history., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. The past decade has seen significant progress in understanding galaxy formation and evolution using large-scale cosmological simulations. While these simulations produce galaxies in overall good agreement with observations, they employ different sub-grid models for galaxies and supermassive black holes (BHs). We investigate the impact of the sub-grid models on the BH mass properties of the Illustris, TNG100, TNG300, Horizon-AGN, EAGLE, and SIMBA simulations, focusing on the M_BH-M_star relation and the BH mass function. All simulations predict tight M_BH-M_star relations, and struggle to produce the lowest (M_BH< 10^7.5 Msun) in galaxies of M_star~10^10.5-10^11.5 Msun. While the time evolution of the mean M_BH-M_star relation is mild (10^9 Msun in most of the simulations. The BH mass function is dominated by efficiently accreting BHs (log10 f_Edd >-2$) at high redshifts, and transitions progressively from the high-mass to the low-mass end to be governed by inactive BHs. It has been shown some years ago that dark matter haloes outskirts are characterized by very steep density profiles in a very small radial range. This feature has been interpreted as a pile up of at a similar location of different particle orbits, namely splashback material at half an orbit after collapse. Adhikari et al. (2014), obtained the location of the splashback radius through a very simple model, namely calculating a dark matter shell trajectory in the secondary infall model while it crosses a growing, NFW profile shaped, dark matter halo. Since they imposed a halo profile instead of calculating it from the trajectories of the shells of dark matter, they were not able to find the dark matter profile around the splashback radius. In the present paper, we use an improved spherical infall model taking into shell crossing, and several physical effects like ordered, and random angular momentum, dynamical friction, adiabatic contraction, etc. This allow us to determine the density profile from the inner to outer region, and study the behavior of the outer density profile. We will compare the density profiles, and the logarithmic slope of the density profile with the results of Diemer \& Kravtsov (2014) simulations, finding a good agreement between the prediction of the model and the simulations., 9 pp, 3 figs

Mau et al., We use a recent census of the Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxy population to constrain the lifetime of particle dark matter (DM). We consider two-body decaying dark matter (DDM) in which a heavy DM particle decays with lifetime τ comparable to the age of the universe to a lighter DM particle (with mass splitting epsilon) and to a dark radiation species. These decays impart a characteristic "kick velocity," Vkick = epsilonc, on the DM daughter particles, significantly depleting the DM content of low-mass subhalos and making them more susceptible to tidal disruption. We fit the suppression of the present-day DDM subhalo mass function (SHMF) as a function of τ and Vkick using a suite of high-resolution zoom-in simulations of MW-mass halos, and we validate this model on new DDM simulations of systems specifically chosen to resemble the MW. We implement our DDM SHMF predictions in a forward model that incorporates inhomogeneities in the spatial distribution and detectability of MW satellites and uncertainties in the mapping between galaxies and DM halos, the properties of the MW system, and the disruption of subhalos by the MW disk using an empirical model for the galaxy–halo connection. By comparing to the observed MW satellite population, we conservatively exclude DDM models with τ < 18 Gyr (29 Gyr) for Vkick = 20 kms−1 (40 kms−1) at 95% confidence. The COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) is designed to provide the community with a spectral atlas of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies which were chosen to cover similar properties as those seen at high-z (z>6). The prime high level science product of CLASSY is accurately coadded UV spectra, ranging from ~1000-2000A, derived from a combination of archival and new data obtained with HST's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). This paper details the multi-stage technical processes of creating this prime data product, and the methodologies involved in extracting, reducing, aligning, and coadding far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectra. We provide guidelines on how to successfully utilize COS observations of extended sources, despite COS being optimized for point sources, and best-practice recommendations for the coaddition of UV spectra in general. Moreover, we discuss the effects of our reduction and coaddition techniques in the scientific application of the CLASSY data. In particular, we find that accurately accounting for flux calibration offsets can affect the derived properties of the stellar populations, while customized extractions of NUV spectra for extended sources are essential for correctly diagnosing the metallicity of galaxies via CIII] nebular emission. Despite changes in spectral resolution of up to ~25% between individual datasets (due to changes in the COS line spread function), no adverse affects were observed on the difference in velocity width and outflow velocities of isolated absorption lines when measured in the final combined data products, owing in-part to our signal-to-noise regime of S/N, 31 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We use the unprecedented resolution and depth of the JWST NIRCam Early Release Observations at 1-5 $\mu$m to study the stellar mass, age, and metallicity of compact star clusters in the neighborhood of the host galaxies in the SMACS J0723.3-7327 galaxy cluster field at z = 0.39. The measured colors of these star clusters show a similar distribution as quiescent galaxies at the same redshift, but are >3 magnitudes fainter than the current depths of wide-field galaxy survey. The star clusters are unresolved in the NIRCam/F150W data suggesting sizes smaller than 50pc. This is significantly smaller than star forming clumps or dwarf galaxies in local galaxies. From fitting their photometry with simple stellar population (SSP) models, we find stellar metallicities consistent with 0.2-0.3 $Z_{\odot}$ and ages of $1.5^{+0.5}_{-0.5}$ Gyrs. The satellite system of a large galaxy represents the ideal laboratory for the study of galactic evolution. Whether that evolution has been dominated by past mergers or in situ formation, clues abound within the structure of the satellite system. This study utilizes recent photometric data obtained for the halo of M31 via the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS), to undertake an analysis of the spatial distribution of the M31 satellite system. To do this, a new Bayesian algorithm is developed for measuring the distances to the satellites from the tip of their Red Giant Branch. The distances are obtained in the form of posterior probability distributions, which give the probability of the satellite lying at any given distance after accounting for the various spatial and photometric characteristics of the component stars. Thus robust distances are obtained for M31 and 27 of its satellite galaxies which are then transformed into three-dimensional, M31-centric positions yielding a homogenous sample of unprecedented size in any galaxy halo. A rigorous analysis of the resulting distribution is then undertaken, with the homogeneity of the sample fully exploited in characterizing the effects of data incompleteness. This analysis reveals a satellite distribution which as a whole, is roughly isothermal and no more planar than one would expect from a random distribution of equal size. A subset of 15 satellites is however found to be remarkably planar, with a root-mean-square thickness of just 12.34kpc. Of these satellites, 13 have subsequently been identified as co-rotating. This highly significant plane is all the more striking for its orientation. From the Earth we view it perfectly edge on and it is almost perpendicular to the Milky Way’s disk. Furthermore, it is roughly orthogonal to the disk-like structure commonly reported for the Milky Way’s satellite galaxies. The distribution is also found to be highly asymmetric, with the majority of satellites lying on the near side of M31. These findings point to a complex evolutionary history with possible links to that of our own galaxy.

The ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II (Ret II) exhibits a unique chemical evolution history, with 72 +10/-12% of its stars strongly enhanced in r-process elements. We present deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of Ret II and analyze its star formation history. As in other ultra-faint dwarfs, the color-magnitude diagram is best fit by a model consisting of two bursts of star formation. If we assume that the bursts were instantaneous, then the older burst occurred around the epoch of reionization and formed ~80% of the stars in the galaxy, while the remainder of the stars formed ~3 Gyr later. When the bursts are allowed to have nonzero durations we obtain slightly better fits. The best-fitting model in this case consists of two bursts beginning before reionization, with approximately half the stars formed in a short (100 Myr) burst and the other half in a more extended period lasting 2.6 Gyr. Considering the full set of viable star formation history models, we find that 28% of the stars formed within 500 +/- 200 Myr of the onset of star formation. The combination of the star formation history and the prevalence of r-process-enhanced stars demonstrates that the r-process elements in Ret II must have been synthesized early in its initial star-forming phase. We therefore constrain the delay time between the formation of the first stars in Ret II and the r-process nucleosynthesis to be less than 500 Myr. Contrary to the standard lore, there is mounting observational evidence that feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) may also play a role at the low-mass end of the galaxy population. In this thesis, I explore that possibility employing both isolated and cosmological simulations of dwarf galaxies. Firstly, I perform high-resolution simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies. In these simulations, the AGN has only a limited direct effect on star formation rates. There is, however, a significant effect on outflows, which are notably enhanced by the AGN to much higher temperatures and velocities. This indicates that AGN may play an indirect role in quenching dwarf galaxies by hindering cosmic gas inflows. I further investigate this quenching scenario using the cosmological simulation suite FABLE. While in the local Universe the majority of AGN in dwarfs are much dimmer than the stellar component, for z ��� 2 there is a significant population of AGN that outshine their hosts. These high-redshift overmassive black holes contribute to the quenching of dwarfs, whereas at late cosmic times supernova (SN) feedback is more efficient. However, the lack of high-luminosity X-ray AGN in FABLE at low redshifts highlights an interesting possibility that SN feedback could be too strong in FABLE's dwarfs, curtailing AGN growth and feedback. To examine the interplay between SNe and AGN accretion in more detail, I run a series of cosmological zoom-in simulations. I find that AGN feedback in tandem with more realistic SN feedback can be a successful alternative quenching mechanism to strong SN feedback in dwarfs, provided that the AGN is able to enter the high-accretion regime for at least part of its history. However, the Bondi rate generally prevents low-mass black holes from accreting efficiently, even though sufficient amounts of gas are available in these dwarfs. Finally, I present a more robust AGN accretion model based on a unified accretion disc, which combines the ADIOS flow and standard thin disc schemes. This model will allow for the self-consistent exploration of the high-accretion regime in dwarf galaxies and detailed modelling of multimessenger signatures, in preparation for the next-generation electromagnetic and gravitational-wave observatories., STFC Studentship 1951902

The extent to which turbulence mixes gas in the face of recurrent infusions of fresh metals by supernovae (SN) could help provide important constraints on the local star formation conditions. This includes predictions of the metallicity dispersion amongst metal poor stars, which suggests that the interstellar medium was not very well mixed at these early times. The purpose of this {\it Letter} is to help isolate, via a series of numerical experiments, some of the key processes that regulate turbulent mixing of SN elements in galactic disks. We study the gas interactions in small simulated patches of a galaxy disk with the goal of resolving the small-scale mixing effects of metals at pc scales, which enables us to measure the turbulent diffusion coefficient in various galaxy environments. By investigating the statistics of variations of $\alpha$ elements in these simulations, we are able to derive constraints not only on the allowed range of intrinsic yield variations in SN explosions but also on the star formation history of the Milky Way. We argue that the observed dispersion of [Mg/Fe] in metal poor halo stars is compatible with the star-forming conditions expected in dwarf satellites or in an early low star-forming Milky Way progenitor. In particular, metal variations in stars that have not been phase-mixed can be used to infer the star-forming conditions of disrupted dwarf satellites., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We report on a superdense star-forming region with an effective radius (R_e) smaller than 13 pc identified at z=6.143 and showing a star-formation rate density \Sigma_SFR~1000 Msun/yr/kpc2 (or conservatively >300 Msun/yr/kpc2). Such a dense region is detected with S/N>40 hosted by a dwarf extending over 440 pc, dubbed D1 (Vanzella et al. 2017b). D1 is magnified by a factor 17.4+/-5.0 behind the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster MACS~J0416 and elongated tangentially by a factor 13.2+/-4.0 (including the systematic errors). The lens model accurately reproduces the positions of the confirmed multiple images with a r.m.s. of 0.35", and the tangential stretch is well depicted by a giant multiply-imaged Lya arc. D1 is part of an interacting star-forming complex extending over 800 pc. The SED-fitting, the very blue ultraviolet slope (\beta ~ -2.5, F(\lambda) ~ \lambda^\beta) and the prominent Lya emission of the stellar complex imply that very young (< 10-100 Myr), moderately dust-attenuated (E(B-V), Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, MNRAS accepted

We constrain the rest-UV size-luminosity relation for star-forming galaxies at z~4 and z~6, 7, and 8 identified behind clusters from the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) program. The size-luminosity relation is key to deriving accurate luminosity functions (LF) for faint galaxies. Making use of the latest lensing models and full data set for these clusters, lensing-corrected sizes and luminosities are derived for 68 z~4, 184 z~6, 93 z~7, and 53 z~8 galaxies. We show that size measurements can be reliably measured up to linear magnifications of 30x, where the lensing models are well calibrated. The sizes we measure span a >1-dex range, from ~500 pc. Uncertainties are based on both the formal fit errors and systematic differences between the public lensing models. These uncertainties range from ~20 pc for the smallest sources to 50 pc for the largest. Using a forward-modeling procedure to model the impact of incompleteness and magnification uncertainties, we characterize the size-luminosity relation at both z~4 and z~6-8. We find that the source sizes of star-forming galaxies at z~4 and z~6-8 scale with luminosity L as L^{0.54\pm0.08} and L^{0.40+/-0.04}, respectively, such that lower luminosity (>~-18 mag) galaxies are smaller than expected from extrapolating the size-luminosity relation at high luminosities (, Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication into ApJ. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1711.02090

Dwarf early-type galaxies (ETGs) display a rich diversity in their photometric, structural, and dynamical properties. In this work, we address their structural complexity by studying with deep imaging a sample of nine dwarf ETGs from the Virgo galaxy cluster, characterized by having faint disk features, such as bars and spiral arms, which lie mostly hidden within the bright diffuse light of the galaxies. We present a new, robust method that aims to identify and extract the disk substructure embedded in these dwarf ETGs. The method consists in an iterative procedure that gradually separates a galaxy image into two components; the bright, dominant diffuse component, and the much fainter, underlying disk component. By applying it to the dwarf ETG sample, we quantify their disk substructure and find that its relative contribution to the total galaxy light ranges between 2.2 to 6.4% within two effective radii. We test the reliability of the method, and prove that it is accurate in recovering the disk substructure we introduce in mock galaxy images, even at low disk-to-total light fractions of a few percent. As a potential application of the method, we perform a Fourier analysis on the extracted disk substructures and measure the orientation, length, and strength of the bars, and the pitch angle and strength of the spiral arms. The population of massive black holes (MBHs) in dwarf galaxies is elusive, but fundamentally important to understand the coevolution of black holes with their hosts and the formation of the first collapsed objects in the Universe. While some progress was made in determining the X-ray detected fraction of MBHs in dwarfs, with typical values ranging from $0\%$ to $6\%$, their overall active fraction, ${\cal A}$, is still largely unconstrained. Here, we develop a theoretical model to predict the multiwavelength active fraction of MBHs in dwarf galaxies starting from first principles and based on the physical properties of the host, namely, its stellar mass and angular momentum content. We find multiwavelength active fractions for MBHs, accreting at typically low rates, ranging from $5\%$ to $22\%$, and increasing with the stellar mass of the host as ${\cal A} \sim(\log_{10}M_{\star})^{4.5}$. If dwarfs are characterized by low-metallicity environments, the active fraction may reach $\sim 30\%$ for the most massive hosts. We present the first results of an MMT/Hectospec campaign to measure the kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) around M49 -- the brightest galaxy in the Virgo galaxy cluster, which dominates the Virgo B subcluster. The data include kinematic tracers beyond 95 kpc (~5.2 effective radii) for M49 for the first time, enabling us to achieve three key insights reported here. First, beyond ~20'-30' (~100-150 kpc), the GC kinematics sampled along the minor photometric axis of M49 become increasingly hotter, indicating a transition from GCs related to M49 to those representing the Virgo B intra-cluster medium. Second, there is an anomaly in the line-of-sight radial velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{r,los}$) profile in an annulus ~10-15' (~50-90 kpc) from M49 in which the kinematics cool by $\Delta \sigma_{r,los}~150$ km s$^{-1}$ relative to those in- or outward. The kinematic fingerprint of a previous accretion event is hinted at in projected phase-space, and we isolate GCs that both give rise to this feature, and are spatially co-located with two prominent stellar shells in the halo of M49. Third, we find a subsample of GCs with velocities representative of the dwarf galaxy VCC1249 that is currently interacting with M49. The spatial distribution of these GCs closely resembles the morphology of VCC1249's isophotes, indicating that several of these GCs are likely in the act of being stripped from the dwarf during its passage through M49's halo. The ionization rates for the considered period were acquired from the AIMOS (Atmospheric Ionization Module Osnabrück) dataset. For numerical experiments, we applied only the proton-induced ionization rates of that period, while all the other model input parameters, including the electron precipitations, corresponded to the quiet conditions. In January 2005, two major solar proton events with different energy spectra and proton fluxes occurred on January 17 and January 20. Since two geomagnetic storms and several sub-storms took place during the considered period, not only solar protons but also less energetic magnetospheric protons contributed to the calculated ionization rates. Despite the relative transparency of the thermosphere for high-energy protons, an ionospheric response to the SPE and proton precipitation from the magnetotail was obtained in numerical experiments. In the ionospheric E layer, the maximum increase in the electron concentration is localized at high latitudes, and at heights of the ionospheric F2 layer, the positive perturbations were formed in the near-equatorial region. An analysis of the model-derived results showed that changes in the ionospheric F2 layer were caused by a change in the neutral composition of the thermosphere. We found that in the recovery phase after both solar proton events and the enhancement of magnetospheric proton precipitations associated with geomagnetic disturbances, the TEC and electron density in the F region and in topside ionosphere/plasmasphere increase at low- and mid-latitudes due to an enhancement of atomic oxygen concentration. Our results demonstrate an important role of magnetospheric protons in the formation of negative F-region ionospheric storms. According to our results, the topside ionosphere/plasmasphere and bottom-side ionosphere can react to solar and magnetospheric protons both with the same sign of disturbances or in different way. The same statement is true for TEC and foF2 disturbances. Different disturbances of foF2 and TEC at high and low latitudes can be explained by topside electron temperature disturbances. © 2021. The core-cusp problem persists as an unresolved tension between the pre- dictions of Lambda CDM cosmology and observations of dark matter (DM) profiles in dwarf spheroidal and other galaxies. We present a novel scenario for converting cusps into cores through reactivation of DM annihilation in galaxies at late times. This can happen in asymmetric DM models when there is a very small DM-number violating mass term that causes oscillations between DM and its antiparticle. Using analytic methods as well as gravitational N-body simulations, we show that this mechanism can robustly eliminate cusps from galactic DM profiles for light fermionic DM of mass m(chi) similar to (0.1 - 1) GeV and a lighter mediator into which the DM can annihilate. We identify regions of parameter space where annihilation of DM particles is more efficient than elastic scattering at reducing the inner density of the DM profile. Dark matter annihilation is therefore a qualitatively distinct alternative to the mechanism of elastic self-interacting dark matter for addressing the cusp-core problem Aberto

Reproducing the observed quenched fraction of satellite galaxies has been a long-standing issue for galaxy formation models. We modify the treatment of environmental effects in our state-of-the-art GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly (GAEA) semi-analytic model to improve our modelling of satellite galaxies. Specifically, we implement gradual stripping of hot gas, ram-pressure stripping of cold gas, and an updated algorithm to account for angular momentum exchanges between the gaseous and stellar disc components of model galaxies. Our updated model is in good agreement with the observed quenched fractions for central and satellite galaxies, and their dependencies on stellar mass and halo mass. We also find consistency between model predictions and observational estimates of quenching time for satellite galaxies; HI, H$_2$ fractions of central galaxies; and deficiencies of HI, H$_2$, SFR of galaxies in cluster haloes. Analysing results from our updated model, we find that the dominant quenching mechanisms are hot-gas stripping for low-mass galaxies, and AGN feedback for massive galaxies. The Ram-pressure stripping of cold gas has a limited impact on the predicted quenched fractions, nonetheless, is needed to reproduce the observed HI deficiencies., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The cold dark matter model successfully explains both the emergence and evolution of cosmic structures on large scales and, when we include a cosmological constant, the properties of the homogeneous and isotropic Universe. However, the cold dark matter model faces persistent challenges on the scales of galaxies. {Indeed,} N-body simulations predict some galaxy properties that are at odds with the observations. These discrepancies are primarily related to the dark matter distribution in the innermost regions of the halos of galaxies and to the dynamical properties of dwarf galaxies. They may have three different origins: (1) the baryonic physics affecting galaxy formation is still poorly understood and it is thus not properly included in the model; (2) the actual properties of dark matter differs from those of the conventional cold dark matter; (3) the theory of gravity departs from General Relativity. Solving these discrepancies is a rapidly evolving research field. We use the Cosmic Assembly Deep Near-infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) data to study the relationship between quenching and the stellar mass surface density within the central radius of 1 kpc ($\Sigma_1$) of low-mass galaxies (stellar mass $M_* \lesssim 10^{9.5} M_\odot$) at $0.5 \leq z < 1.5$. Our sample is mass complete down to $\sim 10^9 M_\odot$ at $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$. We compare the mean $\Sigma_1$ of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quenched galaxies (QGs) at the same redshift and $M_*$. We find that low-mass QGs have higher $\Sigma_1$ than low-mass SFGs, similar to galaxies above $10^{10} M_\odot$. The difference of $\Sigma_1$ between QGs and SFGs increases slightly with $M_*$ at $M_* \lesssim 10^{10} M_\odot$ and decreases with $M_*$ at $M_* \gtrsim 10^{10} M_\odot$. The turnover mass is consistent with the mass where quenching mechanisms transition from internal to environmental quenching. At $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$, we find that the $\Sigma_1$ of galaxies increases by about 0.25 dex in the green valley (i.e., the transitioning region from star forming to fully quenched), regardless of their $M_*$. Using the observed specific star formation rate (sSFR) gradient in the literature as a constraint, we estimate that the quenching timescale (i.e., time spent in the transition) of low-mass galaxies is a few ($\sim4$) Gyrs at $0.5 \leq z < 1.0$. The mechanisms responsible for quenching need to gradually quench star formation in an outside-in way, i.e., preferentially ceasing star formation in outskirts of galaxies while maintaining their central star formation to increase $\Sigma_1$. An interesting and intriguing result is the similarity of the growth of $\Sigma_1$ in the green valley between low-mass and massive galaxies, which suggests that the role of internal processes in quenching low-mass galaxies is a question worthy of further investigation., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. We explore the environmental dependence of star formation timescales in low mass galaxies using the [$\alpha$/Fe] abundance ratio as an evolutionary clock. We present integrated [$\alpha$/Fe] measurements for 11 low mass ($M_\star \sim 10^9~M_\odot$) early-type galaxies (ETGs) with a large range of cluster-centric distance in the Virgo Cluster. We find a gradient in [$\alpha$/Fe], where the galaxies closest to the cluster center (the cD galaxy, M87) have the highest values. This trend is driven by galaxies within a projected radius of 0.4~Mpc (0.26 times the virial radius of Virgo~A), all of which have super-solar [$\alpha$/Fe]. Galaxies in this mass range exhibit a large scatter in the [$\alpha$/Fe]--$\sigma$ diagram, and do not obviously lie on an extension of the relation defined by massive ETGs. In addition, we find a correlation between [$\alpha$/Fe] and globular cluster specific frequency ($S_N$), suggesting that low-mass ETGs that formed their stars over a short period of time, were also efficient at forming massive star clusters. The innermost low-mass ETGs in our sample have [$\alpha$/Fe] values comparable to that of M87, implying that environment is the controlling factor for star formation timescales in dense regions. These low-mass galaxies could be the surviving counterparts of the objects that have already been accreted into the halo of M87, and may be the link between present-day low-mass galaxies and the old, metal-poor, high-[$\alpha$/Fe], high-$S_N$ stellar populations seen in the outer halos of massive ETGs., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Dark Matter was not matter at all. It was a theoretical brainteaser that finally philosophy had to unscramble. Scientists of today do not like this idea but philosophy is capable to deal with theoretical conundrums like dark matter. First chapter which is like a combat between mathematical counterintuitive physics and human commonsense, explains that human commonsense equipped with proper philosophical approach is capable to deal with the problem of dark matter. After making a case for philosophical method, this book then challenges the fundamental convictions of the established Cosmology and explains that even many visible galaxies are located at (light travel) distance of many hundred billion light years. There is no dark matter in any of the so-called 'proofs' of the existence of dark matter and MOND is also an engineered and artificial solution. This book has solved Galactic Rotation problem using Newton's theory and have shown that available theory was capable to explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies without necessitating the existence of dark matter. Thus theory itself is not challenged, blamed or modified. However understanding of scientists of their so-called counterintuitive theories is blamed. For example, to deal with the Galactic Rotation problem, the relevant part of Newton's Principia Mathematica was Proposition LXXIII, Theorem XXXIII. Whereas to deal with this problem, scientists had wrongfully applied Proposition LXXI, Theorem XXXI. Obviously, inaccurate application of available theory resulted in a fake problem and dark matter only served as a ghost solution to that bogus problem. Not only the Galactic Rotation, other so-called indicators of Dark Matter like Cluster Dynamics, Gravitational Lensing, Bullet Cluster, Dark Matter Ring, Fluctuations in CMB Temperature and Structures Formation etc. also have been explained without requiring the need for Dark Matter. Overall this book has presented a strong case of the failure of counterintuitive regime of established Cosmology and Physics.

Scientists did apply Newton's Shell Theorem to the Galactic Rotation Problem. These sections of book explain that scientists applied irrelevant part of Shell Theorem (Theorem XXXI) that was applicable to Solar System and terribly missed to apply the relevant part of Shell Theorem (Theorem XXXIII) that was applicable to the galaxies. These sections thenproperly explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies in the light of Theorem XXXIII without leaving room for dark matter or 'modification of theory'. As flat curves are naturally explained, Spiral Structure of Galaxies also gets explained. These sections also explain dwarf galaxies with respect to attribution of greater quantity of dark matter towards them and so-called 'no dark matter galaxies' also have been discussed. It is concluded that theory was complete enough to explain flat rotation curves of galaxies. Dark Matter was not the failure of theory rather it was the failure of counterintuitive regime of Physics and Cosmology.

The classification method follows the same phototype method previously applied to SDSS-UKIDSS-WISE data. The most significant difference comes from the use of DES data instead of SDSS, which allow us to classify almost an order of magnitude more brown dwarfs than any previous search and reaching distances beyond 400 pc for the earliest types. Next, we also present and validate the GalmodBD simulation, which produces brown dwarf number counts as a function of structural parameters with realistic photometric properties of a given survey. We use this simulation to estimate the completeness and purity of our photometric LT catalogue down to i(AB) = 22, as well as to compare to the observed number of LT types. We put constraints on the thin disc scale height for the early L (L0-L3) population to be around 450 pc, in agreement with previous findings. For completeness, we also publish in a separate table a catalogue of 20 863M dwarfs that passed our colour cut with spectral types greater than M6. Low metallicity dwarfs were originally thought to be the youngest galaxies in the local Universe, however, there is now evidence that they consist of matter which has previously undergone evolution and is enriched by star-formation. Here we present a sample of seven nearby metal-poor dwarf galaxies with a young stellar populations selected from the SDSS which we study using integral field unit (IFU) data from the VIMOS instrument, covering the spectral range between the He II 4686 line and the [SII] 6718/6733 angstrom doublet. We present property maps across the galaxies and compare different galaxies and different HII regions within the same galaxy. We find that the properties within one galaxy are not uniform and they also differ between different galaxies concerning star-formation, kinematics and metallicity and morphology. The observed differences across individual galaxies together with disturbed kinematics and morphologies can be interpreted as possible signs of recent interactions and/or mergers. Additionally, we present a comparison of different metallicity calibrations and search for systematic differences obtained using different methods.

The origin of large-scale magnetic fields, detected in some low-mass (dwarf and irregular) galaxies via polarised synchrotron emission and Faraday rotation, remained unexplained for a long time. We suggest that mean-field dynamo can be active in galaxies of this class despite their slow rotation because their discs are relatively thick. Earlier assessments of the possibility of the mean-field dynamo action in low-mass galaxies relied on estimates applicable to $\textit{thin}$ discs, such as those in massive spiral galaxies. Using both order-of-magnitude estimates and numerical solutions, we show that the strength of differential rotation required to amplify magnetic field reduces as the aspect ratio of the galactic gas layer increases. Thus, the puzzle of the origin of large-scale magnetic fields appears to be solved. With the detection of these stars, we accurately determine the distance moduli for these ultrafaint dwarf satellite galaxies; mu(0) = 20.51 +/- 0.10 mag (D-circle dot = 127 +/- 6 kpc) for Grus I and mu(0) = 20.01 +/- 0.10 mag (D-circle dot = 100 +/- 5 kpc) for Phoenix IL These measurements are larger than previous estimations by Koposov et al. and Bechtol et al., implying larger physical sizes; S per cent for Grus I and 33 per cent for Phoenix II. For Grus II, of the four RRLs detected, one is consistent with being a member of the galactic halo (D-circle dot = 24 +/- 1 kpc, mu(0) = 16.86 +/- 0.10 mag), another is at D-circle dot = 55 +/- 2 kpc (mu(0) = 18.71 +/- 0.10 mag), which we associate with Grus II, and the two remaining at D-circle dot = 43 +/- 2 kpc (mu(0) = 18.17 +/- 0.10 mag). Moreover, the appearance of a subtle red horizontal branch in the colour magnitude diagram of Grus II at the same brightness level of the latter two RRLs, which are at the same distance and in the same region, suggests that a more metal-rich system may be located in front of Grus II. The most plausible scenario is the association of these stars with the Chenab/Orphan Stream. Finally, we performed a comprehensive and updated analysis of the number of RRLs in dwarf galaxies. A suite of idealised, global, gravitationally unstable, star-forming galactic disc simulations with 2 pc spatial resolution, performed with the adaptive mesh refinement code {\sc ramses} is used in this paper to predict the emergent effects of supernova feedback. The simulations include a simplified prescriptions for formation of single stellar populations of mass $\sim 100 \, M_{\odot}$, radiative cooling, photoelectric heating, an external gravitational potential for a dark matter halo and an old stellar disc, self-gravity, and a novel implementation of supernova feedback. The results of these simulations show that gravitationally unstable discs can generate violent supersonic winds with mass loading factors $\eta \gtrsim 10$, followed by a galactic fountain phase. These violent winds are generated by highly clustered supernovae exploding in dense environments created by gravitational instability, and they are not produced in simulation without self-gravity. The violent winds significantly perturb the vertical structure of the disc, which is later re-established during the galactic fountain phase. Gas resettles into a quasi-steady, highly turbulent disc with volume-weighted velocity dispersion $\sigma > 50 \, {\rm km/s}$. The new configuration drives weaker galactic winds with mass loading factor $\eta \leq 0.1$. The whole cycle takes place in $\leq 10$ dynamical times. Such high time variability needs to be taken into account when interpreting observations of galactic winds from starburst and post-starburst galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We present here the results obtained from studying the resolved stellar populations of two dwarf irregular galaxies in the nearby Universe. These galaxies, DDO 68 and NGC 4449, were studied within the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey, an HST program aimed to uncover the many ways in which the star formation (SF) process occurs at different scales. Thanks to the deep photometry obtained in different bands (from λ2704 Å to λ8057 Å), we were able to connect the location and timescales of the star forming regions within the galaxies to merging and interaction with gas clouds and satellites, a crucial aspect of galaxy evolution, even in such small systems. From the color-magnitude diagrams of the analyzed galaxies we were able to recover their star formation history (up to ∼ 2 − 3 Gyr ago since we do not observe the oldest main sequence turn-off or horizontal branch, due to the systems’ distance), finding that the SF never really stopped, but proceeded continuously even with the succession of high and low activity. The time intervals where we find higher SF rates in the two galaxies well agree with the dynamical timescales of previous interactions events, which might represent a major channel for triggering the SF in relatively isolated galaxies.

The data presented here-a small subset of the full survey-uniformly cover a region of 25 deg(2) centered on the galaxy to a depth of g similar to 23.5. We use these data to study the structural properties of Fornax, overall stellar population, and its member stars in different evolutionary phases. We also search for possible signs of tidal disturbance. Fornax is found to be significantly more spatially extended than what early studies suggested. No statistically significant distortions or signs of tidal disturbances were found down to a surface brightness limit of similar to 32.1 mag arcsec(-2). However, there are hints of shell-like features located similar to 20'-40' from the center of Fornax that may be stellar debris from past merger events. We also find that intermediate-age and young main-sequence populations show different orientation at the galaxy center and have many substructures. The deep DES Y3 data allow us to characterize the age of those young stellar substructures with great accuracy, both those previously known and those newly identified as possible overdensities in this work, on the basis of their color-magnitude diagram morphology. We find that the youngest overdensities are all found on the eastern side of Fornax, where the Fornax field population itself is slightly younger than in the west. Eridanus II (EriII) is an ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy (M_V=-7.1) located at a distance close to the Milky Way virial radius. Early shallow color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) indicated that it possibly hosted an intermediate-age or even young stellar population, which is unusual for a galaxy of this mass. In this paper, we present new ACS/HST CMDs reaching the oldest main sequence turnoff with excellent photometric precision, and derive a precise star formation history (SFH) for this galaxy through CMD-fitting. This SFH shows that the bulk of the stellar mass in Eri II formed in an extremely short star formation burst at the earliest possible time. The derived star formation rate profile has a width at half maximum of 500 Myr and reaches a value compatible with null star formation 13 Gyr ago. However, tests with mock stellar populations and with the CMD of the globular cluster M92 indicate that the star formation period could be shorter than 100 Myr. From the quantitative determination of the amount of mass turned into stars in this early star formation burst (~2x10^5 Msun) we infer the number of SNe events and the corresponding energy injected into the interstellar medium. For reasonable estimates of the EriII virial mass and values of the coupling efficiency of the SNe energy, we conclude that EriII could be quenched by SNe feedback alone, thus casting doubts on the need to invoke cosmic reionization as the preferred explanation for the early quenching of old UFD galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, ApJ, accepted Dec 29, 2020

We present the results of VLT-MUSE integral field spectroscopy of SECCO1, a faint, star-forming stellar system recently discovered as the stellar counterpart of an Ultra Compact High Velocity Cloud (HVC274.68+74.0), very likely residing within a substructure of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. We have obtained the radial velocity of a total of 38 individual compact sources identified as HII regions in the main and secondary body of the system, and derived the metallicity for 18 of them. We provide the first direct demonstration that the two stellar bodies of SECCO1 are physically associated and that their velocities match the HI velocities. The metallicity is quite uniform over the whole system, with a dispersion sigma_12+log(O/H/)=0.08, lower than the uncertainty on individual metallicity estimates. The mean abundance, 12+log(O/H)=8.44, is much higher than the typical values for local dwarf galaxies of similar stellar mass. This strongly suggests that the SECCO~1 stars were born from a pre-enriched gas cloud, possibly stripped from a larger galaxy. Using archival HST images we derive a total stellar mass of ~1.6 X 10^5 M_sun for SECCO1, confirming that it has a very high HI to stellar mass ratio for a dwarf galaxy, M_HI/M_*~ 100. We study the impact of star-forming minihaloes, and the initial mass function (IMF) of Population III (Pop III) stars, on the Galactic halo metallicity distribution function (MDF) and on the properties of C-enhanced and C-normal stars at [Fe/H]

We present spatially-resolved HI kinematics of 32 spiral galaxies which have Cepheid or/and Tip of the Red Giant Branch distances, and define a calibrator sample for the Tully-Fisher relation. The interferometric HI data for this sample were collected from available archives and supplemented with new GMRT observations. This paper describes an uniform analysis of the HI kinematics of this inhomogeneous data set. Our main result is an atlas for our calibrator sample that presents global HI profiles, integrated HI column-density maps, HI surface density profiles and, most importantly, detailed kinematic information in the form of high-quality rotation curves derived from highly-resolved, two-dimensional velocity fields and position-velocity diagrams., Comment: 50 pages, 9 figures, 32 atlas figures

Merging galaxies in the nearby universe can provide an ideal local analog of the early universe. Though mergers are less common today, they were prevalent at higher redshift where the increased number density of galaxies led to frequent and prolonged galaxy interactions. However, although the majority of mergers at all redshifts are expected to occur between low mass galaxies, such interactions are poorly understood and largely overlooked in comparison to interactions between massive galaxies. The TiNy Titans (TNT) survey, designed to address this gap in knowledge, is a combined multi-wavelength observational and theoretical campaign aimed at investigating the role that dwarf galaxy interactions play in the larger picture of galaxy evolution. Stars are one of the fundamental components that make up all galaxies, and their formation is ubiquitous throughout cosmic time. Consequently, some of the most pressing open questions related to dwarf-dwarf interactions concern how stars form in these systems. Understanding how these stars form, especially in the early universe, is a necessary foundation for topics ranging from planet formation to galaxy evolution. In this thesis, we examine the ongoing star formation in the TNT interacting dwarf galaxies in unprecedented detail. In Chapter 2, we present the ultraviolet through mid-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the TNT sample. In addition to allowing us to compare multiwavelength tracers of SFRs, these SEDs are used to quantify the `typical' SED of interacting dwarf-dwarf interactions. We present trends in the SEDs as a function of pair properties, galaxy properties, and tidal index. We then compare the interacting dwarf SEDs to other star-forming galaxies in order to contextualize their role in galaxy formation and evolution. In Chapter 3, we discuss the total amount, distribution, and packaging (diffuse vs. clumped) of star forming regions within the TNT interacting dwarfs based on narrowband H$\alpha$ imaging from the Gemini North Telescope. We present a quantitative analysis of the star formation morphology and discuss the impact of galaxy properties and environment on the magnitude and clustering of star formation in these low mass dwarf galaxies. In Chapter 4, we examine an important subset of the TNT interacting dwarf sample -- groups of three or more low mass interacting galaxies isolated from massive galaxies. We have identified the first such candidate groups that are both (1) compact in physical and velocity space, and (2) isolated from massive galaxies. We find that the evolution of these low mass groups is markedly different from that of compact groups of massive galaxies. We present these data as well as a discussion of the cosmological context and role of the groups in high redshift galaxy formation.

The Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr) is among the most massive satellites of the Milky Way and is unique due to its extensive tails of tidally stripped stars. Models of these tails provide strong constraints on the orbital history of Sgr, which in turn lend insight into the structure of the Milky Way’s dark matter halo. Fully understanding the dynamics of Sgr, however, relies on a precise distance to the core. Yet past measurements yield a wide range of values (22.0 - 28.4 kpc) or a variation of ∼ 25%. In addition, the line-of-sight separation of Sgr from the globular cluster M 54 is an important test of the “cusp-core problem”, which highlights the discrepancy between expected formation scenarios for dwarf galaxy dark matter haloes and their observed density distributions. Through photometry of 3.6µm Spitzer IRAC data and GLOESS light curve fitting, we have measured the mean apparent magnitudes of 45 RR Lyrae variables in the Sgr core and 25 RR Lyrae stars in M 54. Apparent magnitudes are measured using multiepoch PSF photometry, and corresponding absolute magnitudes are determined via the RR Lyrae period-luminosity relation. We find the mean distances to Sgr and M 54 to be dSgr = 27.10 ± 0.21 (ran) ± 1.11 (sys) kpc and dM54 = 26.42±0.34(ran)±0.97(sys) kpc, respectively. Our result improves the precision with which the distance to Sgr is known. We also show that the separation of M 54 and Sgr indicates that the Sgr dark matter halo is presently cored, suggesting that the dwarf galaxy has undergone a cusp-core transformation.

In addition to recovering the brightest nine previously known member stars in the Tucana III core, we identify 22 members in the tidal tails. We observe strong evidence for a velocity gradient of 8.0 +/- 0.4 km s(-1) deg(-1) over at least 3 degrees on the sky. Based on the continuity in velocity, we confirm that the Tucana III tails are real tidal extensions of Tucana III. The large velocity gradient of the stream implies that Tucana III is likely on a radial orbit. We successfully obtain metallicities for four members in the core and 12 members in the tails. We find that members close to the ends of the stream tend to be more metal-poor than members in the core, indicating a possible metallicity gradient between the center of the progenitor halo and its edge. The spread in metallicity suggests that the progenitor of the Tucana III stream is likely a dwarf galaxy rather than a star cluster. Furthermore, we find that with the precise photometry of the Dark Energy Survey data, there is a discernible color offset between metal-rich disk stars and metal-poor stream members. These fits assume a fixed Milky Way potential and give proper motion predictions, which can be tested with the upcoming Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2). These fits reveal that Tucana III is on an eccentric orbit around the Milky Way and, more interestingly, that Tucana III passed within 15 kpc of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) approximately 75 Myr ago. Given this close passage, we fit the Tucana III stream in the combined presence of the Milky Way and the LMC. We find that the predicted proper motions depend on the assumed mass of the LMC and that the LMC can induce a substantial proper motion perpendicular to the stream track. A detection of this misalignment will directly probe the extent of the LMC's influence on our Galaxy, and has implications for nearly all methods which attempt to constraint the Milky Way potential. Using high-resolution spectroscopic observations, we measure the metallicity of the three stars, as well as abundance ratios of several alpha-elements, iron-peak elements, and neutron-capture elements. The abundance pattern is relatively consistent among all three stars, which have a low average metallicity of [Fe/H]similar to -2.6 and are not alpha-enhanced ([alpha/Fe] similar to 0.0). This result is unexpected when compared to other low-metallicity stars in the Galactic halo and other ultrafaint dwarfs and suggests the possibility of a different mechanism for the enrichment of Hor I compared to other satellites. We present the physical and dynamical properties of the ionized gas in the prototypical HII galaxy Henize 2-10, as derived by just 2’ on source integration with the MUSE integral field spectrometer. The large scale dynamics is dominated by extended outflowing bubbles, probably the results of massive gas ejection from the central star forming regions. We derive a mass outflow rate Mout∼0.30 M⊙ yr−1, corresponding to mass loading factor η∼0.4, in range with local LIRGs. We use classical emission line diagnostic to study the dust extinction, electron density and ionization conditions all across the galaxy, confirming the extreme nature of the highly star forming knots in the core of the galaxy, which show high density and high ionization parameter. We measure the gas phase metallicity in the galaxy taking into account the strong variation of the ionization parameter, finding that the external parts of the galaxy have abundances as low as 12 + log(O/H) ∼ 8.3, while the central star forming knots are highly enriched with super solar metallicity. We find no sign of AGN ionization in the galaxy, despite the recent claim of the presence of a super massive active Black Hole in the core of He 2-10. We therefore reanalyze the X-ray data that were used to propose the presence of the AGN, but we conclude that the observed X-ray emission can be better explained with sources of a different nature, such as a Supernova Remnant.

Dwarf galaxies offer a unique opportunity to study the competing forces of galaxy evolution. Their simpler history (i.e., small size, fewer major mergers, and lack of active galactic nuclei) enables us to isolate different physical mechanisms more easily. The effects of these mechanisms are imprinted on the galaxy’s star formation history. Traditionally, star formation histories are determined from color-magnitude diagrams. However, chemical abundances can increase the precision of this measurement. Here we present a simplistic galactic chemical evolution model to infer the star formation history. Chemical abundances are measured from spectra obtained with Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectroscopy for over a hundred red giant stars from several satellite dwarf spheroidal galaxies and globular clusters. We focus our work on iron and barium abundances because they predominantly trace Type Ia supernovae and asymptotic giant branch stars, respectively. The different timescales of these two nucleosynthetic sources can be used to measure a finely resolved star formation history, especially when combined with existing [$\alpha$/Fe] measurements. These models will inform the details of early star formation in dwarf galaxies and how it is affected by various physical processes, such as reionization and tidal stripping.

We examine the baryon content of low-mass A cold dark matter (ACDM) haloes (10(8)

Gas velocity dispersion measures the amount of disordered motions of a rotating disk. Accurate estimates of this parameter are of the utmost importance because it is directly linked to disk stability and star formation. A global measure of the gas velocity dispersion can be inferred from the width of the atomic hydrogen HI 21 cm line. We explore how several systematic effects involved in the production of HI cubes affect the estimate of HI velocity dispersion. We do so by comparing the HI velocity dispersion derived from different types of data cubes provided by The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS). We find that residual-scaled cubes best recover the HI velocity dispersion, independent of the weighting scheme used and for a large range of signal-to-noise ratio. For HI observations where the dirty beam is substantially different from a Gaussian, the velocity dispersion values are overestimated unless the cubes are cleaned close to (e.g., ~1.5 times) the noise level., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 14 pages, 12 Figures, 2 Tables

Our sample of 45 stellar systems includes 28 kinematically confirmed dark-matter-dominated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and 17 recently discovered systems that have photometric characteristics consistent with the population of known dSphs. For each of these targets, the relative predicted gamma-ray flux due to dark matter annihilation is taken from kinematic analysis if available, and estimated from a distance-based scaling relation otherwise, assuming that the stellar systems are DM-dominated dSphs. LAT data coincident with four of the newly discovered targets show a slight preference (each similar to 2 sigma local) for gamma-ray emission in excess of the background. However, the ensemble of derived gamma-ray flux upper limits for individual targets is consistent with the expectation from analyzing random blank-sky regions, and a combined analysis of the population of stellar systems yields no globally significant excess (global significance < 1 sigma). Our analysis has increased sensitivity compared to the analysis of 15 confirmed dSphs by Ackermann et al. The observed constraints on the DM annihilation cross section are statistically consistent with the background expectation, improving by a factor of similar to 2 for large DM masses (m(DM, b

The objects, DES J0111-1341 and DES J0225+ 0304, are located at a heliocentric distance of -25 kpc and appear to have old and metal-poor populations. Their distances to the Sagittarius orbital plane, -1.73 kpc (DES J0111-1341) and -0.50 kpc (DES J0225+ 0304), indicate that they are possibly associated with the Sagittarius dwarf stream. The half-light radius (r(h) similar or equal to 4.55 pc) and luminosity (MV similar or equal to + 0.3) of DES J0111-1341 are consistent with it being an ultrafaint stellar cluster, while the half-light radius (rh similar or equal to 18.55 pc) and luminosity (MV similar or equal to -1.1) of DES J0225+ 0304 place it in an ambiguous region of size-luminosity space between stellar clusters and dwarf galaxies. III (Tuc III). We identify 26 member stars in Tuc. III from which we measure a mean radial velocity of v(hel) = - 102.3 +/- 0.4 (stat.) +/- 2.0. (sys.) km s(-1), a velocity dispersion of 0.1(0.7)(+0.7) km s(-1), and a mean metallicity of = -[Fe/H] = -2.42(-0.08)(+0.07). The upper limit on the velocity dispersion is sigma < 1.5 km s(-1) at 95.5% confidence, and the corresponding upper limit on the mass within the half-light radius of Tuc. III is 9.0. x. 10(4) M-circle dot. We cannot rule out mass-to-light ratios as large as 240. Me/Le for Tuc. III, but much lower mass-to-light ratios that would leave the system baryon-dominated are also allowed. We measure an upper limit on the metallicity spread of the stars in Tuc. III of 0.19. dex at 95.5% confidence. Tuc. III has a smaller metallicity dispersion and likely a smaller velocity dispersion than any known dwarf galaxy, but a larger size and lower surface brightness than any known globular cluster. Its metallicity is also much lower than those of the clusters with similar luminosity. We therefore tentatively suggest that Tuc. III is the tidally stripped remnant of a dark matter-dominated dwarf galaxy, but additional precise velocity and metallicity measurements will be necessary for a definitive classification. If Tuc. III is indeed a dwarf galaxy, it is one of the closest external galaxies to the Sun. Because of its proximity, the most luminous stars in Tuc. The authors thank Ian Roederer for helpful discussions and the referee for helpful comments Abstract: Chemically peculiar stars in dwarf galaxies provide a window for exploring the birth environment of stars with varying chemical enrichment. We present a chemical abundance analysis of the brightest star in the newly discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidate Tucana III. Because it is particularly bright for a star in an ultra-faint Milky Way (MW) satellite, we are able to measure the abundance of 28 elements, including 13 neutron-capture species. This star, DES. J235532.66-593114.9 (DES J235532), shows a mild enhancement in neutron-capture elements associated with the r-process and can be classified as an r-I star. DES. J235532 is the first r-I star to be discovered in an ultra-faint satellite, and Tuc. III is the second extremely low-luminosity system found to contain r-process enriched material, after Reticulum. II. Comparison of the abundance pattern of DES. J235532 with r-I and r-II stars found in other dwarf galaxies and in the MW halo suggests a common astrophysical origin for the neutron-capture elements seen in all r-process enhanced stars. We explore both internal and external scenarios for the r-process enrichment of Tuc. We investigate the luminosity functions (LFs) and projected number density profiles of galactic satellites around isolated primaries of different luminosities. We measure these quantities for model satellites placed into the Millennium and Millennium II dark matter simulations by the GALFORM semi-analytic galaxy formation model for different bins of primary galaxy magnitude and we investigate their dependence on satellite luminosity. We compare our model predictions to the data of Guo et al. from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 8 (SDSS DR8). First, we use a mock light-cone catalogue to verify that the method we used to count satellites in the SDSS DR8 is unbiased. We find that the radial distributions of model satellites are similar to those around comparable primary galaxies in the SDSS DR8, with only slight differences at low luminosities and small projected radii. However, when splitting the satellites by colour, the model and SDSS satellite systems no longer resemble one another, with many red model satellites, in contrast to the dominant blue fraction at similar luminosity in SDSS. The few model blue satellites are also significantly less centrally concentrated in the halo of their stacked primary than their SDSS counterparts. Context. The infrared emission (IR) of the interstellar dust has been claimed to be a tracer of the star formation rate. However, the conversion of the IR emission into star formation rate can be strongly dependent on the physical properties of the dust, which are a ected by the environmental conditions where the dust is embedded. Aims. We study here the dust properties of a set of Hii regions in the Local Group galaxy M33 presenting different spatial configurations between the stars, gas, and dust to understand the dust evolution indierent environments. Methods. We modelled the spectral energy distribution (SED) of each region using the DustEM tool and obtained the mass relative to hydrogen for very small grains (VSG, YVSG), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (YPAH), and big grains (BG, YBG). We furthermore performed a pixel-by-pixel SED modelling and derived maps of the relative mass of each grain type for the whole surface of the two most luminous Hii regions in M33, NGC 604 and NGC 595. Results. The relative mass of the VSGs (YVSG/YTOTAL) changes with the morphology of the region: YVSG/YTOTAL is a factor of ∼1.7 higher for Hii regions classified as filled and mixed than for regions presenting a shell structure. The enhancement in VSGs within NGC 604 and NGC 595 is correlated to expansive gas structures with velocities ≥50 km s. The gas-to-dust ratio derived for the Hii regions in our sample exhibits two regimes related to the Hi.H2 transition of the interstellar medium (ISM). Regions corresponding to the Hi diffuse regime present a gas-to-dust ratio compatible with the expected value if we assume that the gas-to-dust ratio scales linearly with metallicity, while regions corresponding to a H2 molecular phase present a flatter dust-gas surface density distribution. Conclusions. The fraction of VSGs can be affected by the conditions of the interstellar environment: strong shocks of ∼5090km s existing in the interior of the most luminous Hii regions can lead to fragmentation of BGs into smaller ones, while the more evolved shell and clear shell objects provide a more quiescent environment where reformation of dust BGs might occur. The gas-to-dust variations found in this analysis might imply that grain coagulation and/or gas-phase metal incorporation into the dust mass is occurring in the interior of the Hii regions in M33. © 2016 ESO., Part of this research has been supported by the PERG08-GA-2010-276813 from the EC.
