Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the latest clinical studies on Korean medicine treatment of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database.Methods: We searched the last 6 years of clinical studies discussing Oriental medicine-based treatments for ITP in the CNKI database. A meta-analysis of 13 RCTs was performed by synthesizing the outcomes, including the measured platelet count and total effective rate. The quality of the studies was assessed using Cochrane’s risk of bias (RoB) tool. RevMan 5.4.1 software was used for data analysis.Results: Of the 15 selected studies, 1 was a non-randomized controlled trial (nRCT), 2 were case series, and 12 were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Treatments in all studies included oral herbal medicine. The most frequently used herbal decoction was the Liangxue Jiedu prescription (凉血解毒方), and the most commonly used herb was Agrimonia pilosa (仙鶴草), Astragali Radix (黃芪), Fossilia Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (甘草), and Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz ex Steudel (地黃). The meta-analysis showed significantly better improvement in platelet counts and total effective rate for ITP in the treatment group than in the control group.Conclusion: Treatment with herbal medicine was effective in treating ITP. However, the significance of this conclusion is somewhat limited due to the low quality of the available studies. Multifaceted and scientifically designed clinical studies are required to develop treatments for ITP based on Korean medicine. The results of this study could be used as basic data for further ITP studies.

We report the discovery and analysis of a planet in the microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-0799. The planetary signal was observed by several ground-based telescopes, and the planet-host mass ratio is q = (2.65 ± 0.16) × 10−3. The ground-based observations yield a constraint on the angular Einstein radius θE, and the microlensing parallax vector $\boldsymbol{{\pi} }_{\rm E}$, is strongly constrained by the Spitzer data. However, the 2019 Spitzer baseline data reveal systematics in the Spitzer photometry, so there is ambiguity in the magnitude of the parallax. In our preferred interpretation, a full Bayesian analysis using a Galactic model indicates that the planetary system is composed of an $M_{\rm planet} = 0.26_{-0.11}^{+0.22}M_{\rm J}$ planet orbiting an $M_{\rm host} = 0.093_{-0.038}^{+0.082}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot }$, at a distance of $D_{\rm L} = 3.71_{-1.70}^{+3.24}$ kpc. An alternate interpretation of the data shifts the localization of the minima along the arc-shaped microlens parallax constraints. This, in turn, yields a more massive host with median mass of $0.13 {\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }}$ at a distance of 6.3 kpc. This analysis demonstrates the robustness of the osculating circles formalism, but shows that further investigation is needed to assess how systematics affect the specific localization of the microlens parallax vector and, consequently, the inferred physical parameters.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed increasing global inequality in responding to the issues of health. How do we resolve the tension between normative concerns for global responsibility and strategic concerns for national interest in facilitating health aid to vulnerable populations in low-income countries in the COVID-19 era? This article presents global health diplomacy as a conceptual framework that could overcome the dichotomy of humanitarianism and international politics, using health aid to North Korea during COVID-19 as a case-study. Health is a critical component of human dignity and can be a normative motivation for cooperation beyond sovereign borders. However, health is also an important element of national interest and can be a strategic motivation for transnational cooperation. The overlap between the moral and rational spaces in global health diplomacy demonstrates how COVID-19 assistance to North Korea's vulnerable population is in the enlightened self-interest of donors to prevent resurgences of new COVID-19 variants. Moreover, this framework imbues all parties, including aid recipients such as North Korea, with the global cooperative responsibility to address health. In this sense, global health diplomacy can reframe the tensions between humanitarianism and politics, morality and rationality, and cosmopolitanism and nationalism, from antithetical to complementary.

An emerging body of research has shown that mindfulness practices for school administrators can result in significant benefits, including a reduction in stress and sense of burnout. Concurrently, nearly 20% of school principals exit their position each year—and cite high levels of stress as a primary motivating factor. In this conceptual paper, we seek to align the benefits of mindfulness practices for educators to the causes of principal turnover, as a means to better support local, low-cost strategies to reduce high levels of leadership attrition. We offer a framework that aligns mindfulness research with principal retention research, and follow with an identification of the organizational, social, and cultural barriers to the adoption of mindfulness practices in public schools. We conclude with specific recommendations for school and district leadership to incorporate mindfulness-based interventions into organizational practices in order to help reduce administrator stress, improve task focus, and ultimately address the underlying sources of leadership turnover.

In this study, we evaluated the residual levels and distribution characteristics of 10 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the soil of agricultural lands (paddy field, vegetable field, and orchard, n = 150) nationwide. As a result of the investigation, 3-10 types of OCPs were detected in combination in 144 locations (96%) of the total 150 locations. Among those OCPs, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and endosulfan were detected in high amounts. The geometric mean concentrations of DDT and endosulfan were ∑DDT 0.31 ng g

Interdigital transducer (IDT)-based scanning laser Doppler vibrometers (SLDVs) have recently been developed to detect shallow defects in plates. An IDT-based SLDV was augmented with Lamb wave frequency fusion capability to enable the imaging of defects across the entire depth of a plate. Dry-coupled IDTs are a type of field-deployable IDT that do not require the attachment of a couplant to the structure. However, this technique is not applicable to the analysis of shallow wall thinning, because IDTs composed of lead zirconium titanate (PZT) cannot be attached to the curved surface of a structure. To address this issue, we developed a new type of IDT—the flexible IDT—that can be bent along the circumferential direction of a pipe. To set the gap spacing of the flexible IDT, the wavenumber sensitivity and minimum distance from the reference mode (MDRM) was calculated, and the S 0 mode is selected to ensure high-wavenumber sensitivity above the threshold of the MDRM. The proposed flexible IDT-based SLDV was tested by using it to visualize the wall thinning on pipes with 4%, 6%, and 20% thinning. The results of this study will contribute toward the development of systems that improve on existing planar laser scanning schemes and enable shallow defect detection in pipes using laser ultrasonics.

This study presents an overview of the literature of mindfulness in education, which is based on the definition of mindfulness, and accompanying key terms, and the philosophy and practices it involves. The review includes a survey of Buddhism, Eastern and Western mindfulness traditions. This literature review gathers the thinking of scholars on the importance of mindfulness and its beneficial practices—particularly in Western contexts—including mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and related therapies. The literature review is also a motivator in the use of mindfulness because it reveals its proven role in both helping career professionals and reducing stress for students by reducing the psychological and physical distress inherent in work and personal lives or students’ academic lives.

We systematically inspect the microlensing data acquired by the KMTNet survey during the previous seasons in order to find anomalous lensing events for which the anomalies in the lensing light curves cannot be explained by the usual binary-lens or binary-source interpretations. From the inspection, we find that interpreting the three lensing events OGLE-2018-BLG-0584, KMT-2018-BLG-2119, and KMT-2021-BLG-1122 requires four-body (lens+source) models, in which either both the lens and source are binaries (2L2S event) or the lens is a triple system (3L1S event). Following the analyses of the 2L2S events presented in \citet{Han2023}, here we present the 3L1S analysis of the KMT-2021-BLG-1122. It is found that the lens of the event KMT-2021-BLG-1122 is composed of three masses, in which the projected separations (normalized to the angular Einstein radius) and mass ratios between the lens companions and the primary are $(s_2, q_2)\sim (1.4, 0.53)$ and $(s_3, q_3) \sim (1.6, 0.24)$. By conducting a Bayesian analysis, we estimate that the masses of the individual lens components are $(M_1, M_2, M_3)\sim (0.47\,M_\odot, 0.24\,M_\odot, 0.11\,M_\odot)$. The companions are separated in projection from the primary by $(a_{\perp,2}, a_{\perp,3})\sim (3.5, 4.0)$~AU. We report results from the TESS photometric data and new high-resolution spectra of the Algol system X Tri showing short-period pulsations. From the echelle spectra, the radial velocities of the eclipsing pair were measured, and the rotational rate and effective temperature of the primary star were obtained to be $v_1$$\sin$$i=84\pm6$ km s$^{-1}$ and $T_{\rm eff,1}=7900 \pm 110$ K, respectively. The synthetic modeling of these observations implies that X Tri is in synchronous rotation and is physically linked to a visual companion TIC 28391715 at a separation of about 6.5 arcsec. The absolute parameters of our target star were accurately and directly determined to be $M_1 = 2.137 \pm 0.018$ $M_\odot$, $M_2 = 1.101 \pm 0.010$ $M_\odot$, $R_1 = 1.664 \pm 0.010$ $R_\odot$, $R_2 = 1.972 \pm 0.010$ $R_\odot$, $L_1 = 9.67 \pm 0.55$ $L_\odot$, and $L_2 = 2.16 \pm 0.09$ $L_\odot$. The phase-binned mean light curve was used to remove the binary effect from the observed TESS data. Multifrequency analysis of the residuals revealed 16 significant frequencies, of which the high-frequency signals between 37 day$^{-1}$ and 48 day$^{-1}$ can be considered probable pulsation modes. Their oscillation periods of 0.021$-$0.027 days and pulsation constants of 0.014$-$0.018 days are typical values of $\delta$ Sct variables. The overall results demonstrate that X Tri is an oEA star system, consisting of a $\delta$ Sct primary and its lobe-filling companion in the semi-detached configuration., Comment: 27 pages, including 8 figures and 6 tables, accepted for publication in AJ

We report on the observations of the quasar NRAO 530 with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) on 2017 April 5−7, when NRAO 530 was used as a calibrator for the EHT observations of Sagittarius A*. At z = 0.902, this is the most distant object imaged by the EHT so far. We reconstruct the first images of the source at 230 GHz, at an unprecedented angular resolution of ∼20 μas, both in total intensity and in linear polarization (LP). We do not detect source variability, allowing us to represent the whole data set with static images. The images reveal a bright feature located on the southern end of the jet, which we associate with the core. The feature is linearly polarized, with a fractional polarization of ∼5%-8%, and it has a substructure consisting of two components. Their observed brightness temperature suggests that the energy density of the jet is dominated by the magnetic field. The jet extends over 60 μas along a position angle ∼ −28°. It includes two features with orthogonal directions of polarization (electric vector position angle), parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis, consistent with a helical structure of the magnetic field in the jet. The outermost feature has a particularly high degree of LP, suggestive of a nearly uniform magnetic field. Future EHT observations will probe the variability of the jet structure on microarcsecond scales, while simultaneous multiwavelength monitoring will provide insight into the high-energy emission origin.

Only a few wide-orbit planets around old stars have been detected, which limits our statistical understanding of this planet population. Following the systematic search for planetary anomalies in microlensing events found by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network, we present the discovery and analysis of three events that were initially thought to contain wide-orbit planets. The anomalous feature in the light curve of OGLE-2018-BLG-0383 is caused by a planet with mass ratio q = 2.1 × 10−4 and a projected separation s = 2.45. This makes it the lowest mass-ratio microlensing planet at such wide orbits. The other two events, KMT-2018-BLG-0998 and OGLE-2018-BLG-0271, are shown to be stellar binaries (q > 0.1) with rather close (s < 1) separations. We briefly discuss the properties of known wide-orbit microlensing planets and show that the survey observations are crucial in discovering and further statistically constraining such a planet population.

Flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) of carbon steel piping is a significant problem in nuclear power plants. The basic process of FAC is currently understood relatively well; however, the accuracy of prediction models of the wall-thinning rate under an FAC environment is not reliable. Herein, we propose a methodology to construct pipe wall-thinning rate prediction models using artificial neural networks and a convolutional neural network, which is confined to a straight pipe without geometric changes. Furthermore, a methodology to generate training data is proposed to efficiently train the neural network for the development of a machine learning-based FAC prediction model. Consequently, it is concluded that machine learning can be used to construct pipe wall thinning rate prediction models and optimize the number of training datasets for training the machine learning algorithm. The proposed methodology can be applied to efficiently generate a large dataset from an FAC test to develop a wall thinning rate prediction model for a real situation.

Combined calcination (700 °C) and extraction was applied for aluminum recovery from alum sludge (AS) for phosphorus removal. Calcined AS had higher aluminum and lower COD content than the intact and dried AS. Both acid and alkali extraction recovered more than 90% of the aluminum in the intact and the pretreated AS. Alkali extract of the AS had less heavy metals and COD contents than the acid extract. Response surface methodology (RSM) of Box–Behnken Design (BBD) was applied to find the optimal condition for phosphorus removal with the recovered aluminum solutions. The aluminum solutions showed that the highest phosphorus removal efficiency was more than 98% at the optimal condition (pH 6.4 and Al/P molar ratio higher than 2) with the extract from the calcined AS. FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed that the recovered precipitate contained AlPO4 and Al(OH)3.
