The European construction has created debates in French politics since the creation of the European Defence Community, and the cleavage opposing the supporters and opponents of Europe goes beyond the traditional right/left confrontation. Pervasive in the national debate, in particular in the presidential elections since 1988, this cleavage has been exacerbated by the recourse to the referendum, as was the case in 2005. However, the fact that the opponents to Europe did not manage to build an alternative political force able to gain power indicates that public opinion is in fact broadly in favour of Europe and the euro. There lies the paradox. While it is fundamental, the European cleavage seems deprived of any political future.
