Abstract

We conducted a two-year (2019–2020) longitudinal study in Jiangsu Province, China to analyze risk factors of pinworm infection and evaluate the effect of behavior change communication–based (BCC-based) interventions in preschool children. The positive rate of pinworm infection was higher in private preschool (2%) than in public preschool (0.24%). Poor sanitation behaviors were risk factors among private preschool children. BCC-based intervention could improve knowledge and practice and reduce pinworm infection. This study may help fill in gaps in pinworm control. Abstract

Abstract: Owing to the prevalent occurring in natural products and abundant bioactivities, the effective synthetic methods of fused bicyclic N,O-acetals skeletons are of great interest to chemists. This mini-review summarized the thus far synthetic progress of fused bicyclic N,O-acetals. These works were elaborated according to the different reaction types, including a) hetero-Diels-Alder cycloaddition of cyclic enamines with oxadienes; b) step-by-step reactions between cyclic enamines and electrophiles with pendant hydroxyl groups; c) [3+2] cycloaddition of indole with quinone or its equivalent and d) other novel strategies. The catalytic systems and reaction mechanisms are mainly described.

Herein, we report on a novel tanning–dyeing integration strategy based on converting natural cochineal carmine (Car) into an effective tanning agent (DCar) without losing its dyeing capabilities via periodate oxidation. Initially, DCar was used as a tanning–dyeing agent, leading to tanned-dyed leather with well-dispersed and fixed collagen fibers (CFs) and a shrinkage temperature (Ts) of ca. 70 °C. Subsequently, this leather was filled and fatliquored to be prepared for the subsequent aluminum fixation of the CFs matrix, which was facilitated by the excellent metal complexation capabilities of DCar. This dual integrative process resulted in successful simultaneous leather tanning and dyeing. Consequently, the resultant crust leather had a Ts of ca. 80 °C with an outstandingly dispersed and fixed CFs network and excellent softness, fullness, and commercializable mechanical strength (tensile strength: 13 N/mm2; tear strength: 54 N/mm). Besides, it also had a highly marketable brown color, a smooth grain surface, and excellent coloring uniformity and fastness. Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has claimed millions of lives worldwide, not to mention innumerable losses in the global economy and disruptions in social relationships. Unfortunately, state-of-the-art treatments still lag behind the fast emergence of new variants of concern. The key to resolve this issue is to develop broad-spectrum antivirals with innovative antiviral mechanisms in which coronaviruses are deactivated regardless of their variant development. Herein, we report a new antiviral strategy involving extracellular disintegration of viral proteins that are indispensable for viral infection with hyperanion-grafted enediyne molecules. The sulfate groups ensure low cellular permeability and rather low cytotoxicity of the molecules, while the core enediyne generates reactive radical species and causes significant damage to the spike (S) protein of coronavirus. The enediyne compounds exhibit antiviral activity at micromolar to nanomolar concentrations, and the selectivity index of up to 20,000 against four kinds of human coronaviruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant, suggesting the high potential of this new strategy in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
