1. Development of dual-purpose cross for meat and egg production II. Meat quality of the crossbred chickens and the parent lines

Abstract

The study aimed to examine the meat quality of chickens from a dual-purpose cross and its parent lines. The trial was conducted in the experimental poultry farm of the Institute of Animal Science-Kostinbrod, Bulgaria. The dual-purpose chickens were obtained by crossing female layers (Line L) and dual-purpose cocks (BB, based on Bresse Gauloise). At the age of 9 weeks the male chickens from the parent lines and the dual-purpose cross were slaughtered. Six chickens of each genotype were subjected to breast and thigh meat quality analysis. The crossbred chickens tended to have lower pH in breast but the values of this parameter were higher in their thighs. The BB line showed the poorest water-holding capacity (WHC) in both breast and thigh meat cuts. This line and the crossbreed showed lighter meat compared to the L line. Except the ash content of the breast and thigh meat that was higher in the BB line, the proximate composition did not differ between the examined lines and their cross. The L and dual-purpose chickens tended to have higher intramuscular fat (IMF) but lower protein in thigh meat than the BB line. The correlation analysis revealed clear relationships between the meat quality traits and the proximate composition, however they differed for the breast and thigh meat.

3. Early diagnosis of Takayasu arteritis

Abstract

Systemic vasculitis is a group of heterogeneous diseases characterized by inflammation of the vascular wall. They can be primary or arise in the context of another disease. Blood vessels of different sizes are affected, being mainly divided into small, medium and large vessels. Takayasu's arteritis is a vasculitis of the large blood vessels, most often affecting the aorta and its branches, subclavian arteries, iliac, femoral arteries and others. The presented clinical case concerns a woman with non-specific symptoms - low fever, sweating, weight loss, easy fatigue. After excluding an infectious genesis of the complaints, a diagnosis of Takayasu's Arteritis was made in the early phase of the disease as a result of Positron emission tomography. Corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy was started. When conducting a control PET, 20 months after the start of the therapy, a significant regression to absence of the findings from the imaging study was observed.

Abstract

The city of Ohrid is one of the oldest settlements in the western Balkans,exceptionally rich with archeological, architectural, and cultural sites, whichmust be protected from damage during future earthquakes by properretrofitting and strengthening of the old structures. To provide a sound basisfor retrofitting work, in this paper, we describe the amplitudes of strongground motion in Ohrid for a range of probabilities of being exceeded. We usethe Uniform Hazard Method to compute the amplitudes of strong motion, and,in the calculations, we explicitly include the geological site conditions for allthe maps we show. By noting the large jumps in the predicted strong motionamplitudes at sites along the contact between basement rock and sediments,we emphasize that the empirical scaling equations for strong motionamplitudes must include explicit dependence on the geological site conditions.

6. Intraoperative ultrasound for nonpalpable breast lesions – experience and operative time

Abstract

Introduction: The essential tools doctors need to diagnose breast cancer tumors at the early stages and with no clinical presentation are screening mammography and ultrasonography. Nonpalpable breast lesions are a current problem nowadays and there are various types of navigation techniques that are utilized in order to achieve cancer cell-free resection margins in the first place. Intraoperative ultrasound has been proven to be a safe and effective way to excise this type of breast tumors. Aim: To study the correlation between the experience we obtained while using intraoperative ultrasound for excision of nonpalpable breast lesions, and the duration of surgery. Materials and methods: Twenty-five women with nonpalpable breast lesions underwent breast-conserving surgery using ultrasound navigation. Nominal and ordinal data were presented using numbers and percentages. Spearman’s rank-order correlation was used to assess the effect of experience gained on the duration of surgery. Results: The tumor distribution was 72% malignant tumors and 28% benign. A 100% identification rate in the effective surgical excisions was reported. In the process of gaining experience using the method, the duration of surgery shortened by 30%. No tumor cells on ink were found in all specimens and there was no need for secondary surgeries. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate a relatively short learning curve, and we believe that breast surgeons should be helped and encouraged to gather adequate expertise to ensure patient safety and gain confidence.&nbsp

Abstract

We report the rare occurrence of a temporal glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) showing transdural tumor extension into adjacent mastoid cells. As the dura mater provides a barrier to intraaxial tumors, GBM seldom penetrates into the skull base, even though it is a high-grade astrocytoma with a tendency to spread. Yet, some mechanisms of GBM-induced skull invasion have been identified, making this entity a very rare but nonetheless relevant differential diagnosis in otherwise ambiguous cases of an intracerebral tumor extending into the skull base. In addition, imaging markers that may assist in distinguishing extra- from intraaxial tumor infiltration of the temporal bone are described.

11. Political legitimacy and vaccine hesitancy: Disability support workers in Australia

Abstract

People with disability are an at-risk group in the COVID-19 pandemic for a range of clinical and socioeconomic reasons. In recognition of this, Australians with disability and those who work with them were prioritized in access to vaccination, but the vaccination targets were not met. In this paper, we analyze qualitative data generated from a survey with 368 disability support workers to identify drivers of COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy and why the implementation of this policy may have experienced challenges. We identify a range of themes within these data but ultimately argue that a major driver of vaccine hesitancy in this group is a mistrust of government and an erosion of employment terms and conditions. Drawing on the policy capacity literature, we argue that the “Achilles’ heel” for the Australian government in this case is the critical policy capacity of political legitimacy. This finding has important implications for where the government needs to increase/build policy capacity, strengthening its efforts and better relating to organizations that can be helpful in terms of developing public health messaging for disability support workers.

12. Robotic gastrointestinal stromal tumors surgery - initial results

Abstract

Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) usually present as an exophytic mass localized in stomach. Years ago, conventional surgery was the only option. Laparoscopic and robotic procedures have risen to prominence in recent decades as technology and surgical techniques have advanced. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of robotic surgery of GIST. Materials and methods: All patients who underwent robotic surgery for a GIST in the University Hospital Kaspela-Plovdiv between November 2021 and April 2022 were included. Post-operative course and short oncological outcomes were analyzed. Results: Four patients with gastric GIST, median size 50 mm [40–70 mm], underwent robotic surgery. Conversion to open surgery not occurred. We have two cases with localization in corpus, one in antrum and one in the fundus. We have registered one complications- anastomotic leakage after proximal resection treated conservatively. In others, the post-operative period was uneventful. The average hospital stay was 8.2 (4-11) days. The median operating time was 255 min (220–320 min). Conclusions: On basis of this initial results, we can conclude that robotic gastrointestinal tumors surgery is safe, feasible, and oncological sustained. Of course, one of the weakest sides of this surgery is prolonged operative time and increased expenses.

13. Comparison of short term results following robotic and laparoscopic total gastrectomy and D2 lymph node dissection

Abstract

Introduction: In the last decade, there has been a progressive shift from open to mini-invasive operative techniques for surgical resection of gastric cancer. Advanced equipment of surgical robots, with its 3D visualization, steady camera view, flexible instrument tips, attracts more and more practitioners in performing robotic gastrectomy with D2 dissection in gastric cancer patients. Thus, the comparison of some basic oncological as well as some surgical variables related to laparoscopic and robotic gastrectomy and D2 lymphadenectomy is necessary. Aim: The aim of the study was to compare our initial short-term results after robotic and laparoscopic gastrectomy. Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed. For a period of four years between January 2018 and August 2022, a total number of 110 patients with total gastrectomy and D2 lymphadenectomy due to gastric cancer operated in Department of General Surgery, Kaspela University Hospital, Plovdiv, were included into the study. They were separated in two groups: thirty-eight patients with robotic surgery and 72 with laparoscopic assisted procedure. Results: The oncological variables such as location of tumor, nodal status, number of lymph nodes removed, and pathological tumor showed no statistically significant differences between robotic and laparoscopic group. The demographic variables as age, sex, BMI, as well as ASA score also demonstrated no remarkable difference in both groups (p>0.05). The overall complication rate were similar (p=0.983). Conclusion: We found no significant advantages of robotic over laparoscopic gastric surgery in our patients. However, we think that robotic surgery is effective, safe, and promising approach to the treatment of gastric cancer capable of correcting some of the disadvantages of laparoscopy.

14. Workers Risk Levels of Noise in the Dairy Cow Milking Parlor

Abstract

The study was carried out in the milking parlor of a dairy cattle farm consisting 500 animals from Holstein-Friesian breed in Bulgaria. The animals were housed in a freestall dairy barn and milked in double-8 milking parlor “herringbone” type. The level of noise was measured three times in every milking (at the beginning, in the middle and at the finishing of the milking) in the morning, midday and evening milking every month for one year. The noise level in the working environment was recorded by noise meter„ Lutron SL-4023SD. The highest noise levels were reported in summer and winter, with maximum values up to 78.3 dB. It was found that regardless of the season during the morning milking the lowest noise levels in the milking parlor were reported (from 70.37 to 70.46 dB). The average values for noise level for an 8-hour working day by seasons varied from 69.87 dB to 74.36 dB, with the highest reported value for the winter season.

15. Continuity of temperament subgroup classifications from infancy to toddlerhood in the context of early autism traits

Abstract

Our previous cross-sectional investigation (Chetcuti et al., 2020) showed that infants with autism traits could be divided into distinct subgroups based on temperament. This longitudinal study builds on this existing work by exploring the continuity of temperament subgroup classifications and their associations with behavioral/clinical phenotypic features from infancy to toddlerhood. 103 infants (68% male) showing early signs of autism were referred to the study by community healthcare professionals and seen for assessments when aged around 12-months (Time 1), 18-months (Time 2), and 24-months (Time 3). Latent profile analysis revealed inhibited/low positive, active/negative reactive, and sociable/well-regulated subgroups at each timepoint, and a unique reactive/regulated subgroup at Time 3. Cross-tabulations indicated a significant likelihood of children having a recurrent subgroup classification from one timepoint to the next, and no apparent patterns to the movement of children who did change from one subgroup to another over time. Temperament subgroups were associated with concurrent child social-emotional functioning and autism traits, but unrelated to child age, sex, or developmental level. These findings suggest that temperament subgroup classifications might represent a reliable and very early indicator of autism characteristics and social-emotional functioning among infants/toddlers with autism traits.

17. Development of dual-purpose cross for meat and egg production I. Growth performance and carcass composition of the crossbred chickens in comparison to the parent lines

Abstract

The aim of the study was to develop a dual-purpose cross suitable for rearing in alternative systems and to examine its growth performance and carcass composition in comparison to the parent lines. The experiment was carried out in the experimental poultry farm in the Institute of Animal Science - Kostinbrod. The cross was developed using females of a layer type line L and cocks from line BB. The latter was based on Bresse Gauloise that is also dual purpose but mainly used for meat. The chickens from the lines and the cross were reared in mixed-sex groups on deep litter, at stocking density of 25 birds/m2, and fed with standard broiler feed until the age of 9 weeks. Then the males were separated and sent to slaughter while the females were left for layers. Crossing hens from layer type line L with BB cocks resulted in dual-purpose chickens with a live weight and feed efficiency that were better in comparison to L line, but lower when compared to the BB line. These parameters were however, lower than the typically observed in this type of poultry. Nevertheless, the chickens displayed good carcass composition and deposited low content of abdominal fat, thus revealing good potential to be successfully realized in market.

18. Role of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism L55M in the Paraoxonase 1 Gene as a Risk and Prognostic Factor in Acute Coronary Syndrome

Abstract

The aim of the current study is to explore the possible role of L55M, (rs 854560, 163T > A) SNP as a predisposing factor for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and to assess its potency as a prognostic biomarker for short (1 year) survival and for median (5 years) and 9-year long patients’ outcome. Methods: The current work is a prospective case-control study with 77 patients with acute coronary syndrome (53 with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, STEMI, 14 with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, NSTEMI and 10 with unstable angina, UA) and 122 control individuals. Patients were followed-up for 9 years. The genotyping for PON1 L55M SNP was carried on by PCR-RFLP method. Results: The results of the genotyping for PON1 L55M SNP showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.023) between the controls and the whole group of patients with acute coronary syndrome, as the individuals with genotype with at least one variant M allele had about 2.5-fold higher risk for developing ACS than those which are homozygous of the wild-type L allele (LL genotype). In patients with variant M allele genotypes (LM + MM) which suffer from non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTEACS, i.e., UA or NSTEMI), the serum levels of total cholesterol (TC) and triacylglycerols (TAG) are significantly higher than in NSTEACS patients with LL genotype (p = 0.022 for TC and p = 0.015 for TAG). There was no significant difference in the survival rate at the 1st, 5th and 9th year of follow-up between ACS patients with different genotypes, although it is worth to note that in the subgroup of NSTEACS, all patients (n = 13) with variant M allele genotypes (LM + MM) were alive at the end of the first year, while 2 of the patients with LL genotype (18.2%) were dead. Conclusions: The results of our current study suggest that the variant M allele and the M allele genotypes (LM + MM) of the PON1 L55M polymorphism are risk factors for acute coronary syndrome, especially for patients with STEMI, but do not support the possible effect of this polymorphism on the clinical progression and outcome of the patients with ACS either in short or long follow-up periods.

We propose a prospective inquiry framework for entrepreneurship. It aims to align the scholarly pursuit of theoretical novelty with the entrepreneurs’ focus on the future, in a shared aspiration to make a difference in the world. By expanding the focus of theoretical work toward the future, scholarship can focus on the formulation, exploration, and evaluation of alternatives to the present, as theoriesfor desired futures. Prospective inquiry retains the primacy of theorizing while expanding its purpose, value, and use in entrepreneurship research, unleashing its generative power. It opens new spaces for theoretical excellence, dissolves the research-practice gap, and allows researchers and practitioners to theorize and enact their aspirations for the future.

23. Surgical Management of Liver Metastases from Colorectal Cancer: A Single-Surgeon Preliminary Findings Report

Abstract

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is a significant medical and social problem. Approximately half of the patients with colorectal carcinoma develop liver metastasis. Most commonly, they are identified during the diagnostic process or the initial surgery. After the diagnostics, only 15% of the cases are referred to receive radical surgery. Liver resection in patients with hepatic metastases is the only way to improve their survival. Objective: To introduce a surgical strategy used for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases. Materials and Methods: The study included 539 patients who underwent surgery for colorectal carcinoma in the Department of Surgery at University Hospital "Kaspela" during the period 2014–2020. This data was collected from the patients' disease history. Results: Of the 539 patients with colorectal carcinoma, 74 (13.7%) were diagnosed with synchronous liver metastases. In 38 (51.3%) of the cases, the metastases were solitary, of which 21 were removed simultaneously and 17 at the follow-up stage. In 8 (10.8%) cases, more than one (2 to 3) solitary metastasis was established near the edges. They were also removed simultaneously. In 6 patients (8.1%), bi-lobar and peripherally localized solitary lesions were found, which were removed instantly and chemotherapy was administered. In 22 (29.7%) of the patients with multiple bi-lobar metastases, only a biopsy was performed, and surgery was carried out only in those affected by chemotherapy. Conclusion: The possibilities of simultaneous and stepwise liver resections were expanded by focusing on individual approach preferences and improving diagnostic methods, liver surgery techniques, and modern chemotherapy. This increased the survival rate of patients with colorectal liver metastases.

Abstract

Laser-based Direct Energy Deposition (L-DED) is one of the most commonly employed metal additive manufacturing technologies. In L-DED, a laser beam is employed as a heat source to melt the metal powder that is deposited on a substrate layer by layer for the generation of a desired component. The powder is commonly fed through a nozzle into the molten pool by means of a carrier gas and therefore, a nozzle design that ensures optimal deposition of the material is of critical importance. Additionally, its design also affects the powder and gas flows that arise in the nozzle and during the deposition. This, in turn will affect the characteristics of the generated clad and the performance of the whole deposition. Therefore, an optimization of deposition nozzle geometry can be as important as the controlling of deposition process parameters in order to obtain best component qualities. In this context, the present review work is aimed at analysing the different nozzle designs employed in powder-based L-DED processes and the influence of different geometrical features and configurations on the resulting powder and gas flows. Concretely, the main characteristics of each design, their advantages and their possible shortcomings are analysed in detail. Additionally, a review of most relevant numerical models employed during the development of new and optimised nozzle designs are also addressed.

25. Quantification and 3D Localization of Magnetically Navigated Superparamagnetic Particles Using MRI in Phantom and Swine Chemoembolization Models

Abstract

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) can be combined with tumor chemoembolization agents to form magnetic drug-eluting beads (MDEBs), which are navigated magnetically in the MRI scanner through the vascular system. We aim to develop a method to accurately quantify and localize these particles and to validate the method in phantoms and swine models.MDEBs were made of FeIndividual MDEBs were spatially identified, and their artifacts quantified, showing no correlation with magnetic-field orientation or sequence bandwidth, but exhibiting a relationship with echo time and providing a linear volume relationship. Two MDEB aggregates were magnetically steered into desired liver regions while the other 19 had no steering, and 25 aggregates were injected into another swine without steering. The MDEBs were spatially identified and the volume relationship showed accuracy in assessing the number of the MDEBs, with small errors (≤ 8.8%).MDEBs were able to be steered into desired body regions and then localized using 3D VIBE sequences. The resulting volume relationship was linear, robust, and allowed for quantitative analysis of the MDEB distribution.

Abstract

The present study addresses the sensitivity analysis of particle concentration dispersion in the turbulent flow. A stochastic spectral model of turbulence is used to simulate the particle transfer. Sensitivity analysis is performed by estimations of Morris and Sobol indices. This study allows to define the significant and nonsignificant model parameters. It also gives an idea of the qualitative behavior of the stochastic model used.

High-temperature alloys pose significant challenges in additive manufacturing. These materials have unique properties, such as high resistance to mechanical and chemical degradation when exposed to high temperatures. Furthermore, when these alloys are used to produce hybrid components with other similar alloys, investigating their surface integrity is critical because any residual stress can lead to early stage cracks and poor fatigue performance. In this research, a hybrid manufacturing approach is employed to produce components from difficult to weld alloys, i.e. CM247LC deposited on IN718 through a laser based direct energy deposition (L-DED) process. The surface integrity, mechanical properties and microstructure of such hybrid components is investigated, especially their welding/joint areas. Crack-free processing regimes were established to deposit CM247LC while mitigating the negative effects onto the microstructure of the Inconel substrate. Especially, the thermal gradients were managed to deliver crack free sections of CM247LC with good interface bonding, strength and fine microstructure. It is important to note that this is achieved without any significant preheating that contrasts with what is reported in other investigations so far. Furthermore, end-use hybrid blisks with deposited CM247LC blades onto Inconel 718 disks (HUB) were manufactured and then machined within a single processing set-up. The results show that the substrate thickness, the machining between the deposited layers and the final machining and heat-treatment play a role in reducing residual stresses. Ultimately, such hybrid manufacturing approach can be considered a new solution for producing such components and also for their subsequent repair.

30. DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE FINANCIAL MARKET: RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Abstract

The introduction of modern digital technologies into the practice of financial market entities contributes to the resolution of contradictions in economic relations between suppliers and consumers of financial products by forming a local compromise. The digitalization of financial services helps to increase the physical and tariff accessibility of financial services, reduces the costs of a financial company to expand its client portfolio. However, it should be noted that the production, sale and consumption of digital financial services and the digitalization of business processes of financial companies are associated with additional risks for all participants in economic relations. Purpose. Study of opportunities and risks of forming an effective financial strategy for a consumer of financial services in the context of digital transformation of the financial market. Methods and methodology. The article used the methodology of conflict-compromise management of economic relations, the general theory of risk, as well as content analysis of the literature on the research problem. Results. Results were obtained that confirm the hypothesis that the digitalization of various business processes in financial companies will lead to an increase in the process of disintermediation, which will inevitably lead to the transformation of traditional business models of companies, a revision of the factors affecting the formation of profits of financial companies, and for consumers of financial services to the need to form patterns of responsible financial behavior in the context of financial market transformation. Practical implications it is advisable to apply the results obtained by economic entities involved in the formation of functional strategies of companies.

Abstract

To assess the ability of four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI to measure hepatic arterial hemodynamics by determining the effects of spatial resolution and respiratory motion suppression in vitro and its applicability in vivo with comparison to two-dimensional (2D) phase-contrast MRI.A dynamic hepatic artery phantom and 20 consecutive volunteers were scanned. The accuracies of Cartesian 4D flow sequences with k-space reordering and navigator gating at four spatial resolutions (0.5- to 1-mm isotropic) and navigator acceptance windows (± 8 to ± 2 mm) and one 2D phase-contrast sequence (0.5-mm in -plane) were assessed in vitro at 3 T. Two sequences centered on gastroduodenal and hepatic artery branches were assessed in vivo for intra - and interobserver agreement and compared to 2D phase-contrast.In vitro, higher spatial resolution led to a greater decrease in error than narrower navigator window (30.5 to -4.67% vs -6.64 to -4.67% for flow). In vivo, hepatic and gastroduodenal arteries were more often visualized with the higher resolution sequence (90 vs 71%). Despite similar interobserver agreement (κ = 0.660 and 0.704), the higher resolution sequence had lower variability for area (CV = 20.04 vs 30.67%), flow (CV = 34.92 vs 51.99%), and average velocity (CV = 26.47 vs 44.76%). 4D flow had lower differences between inflow and outflow at the hepatic artery bifurcation (11.03 ± 5.05% and 15.69 ± 6.14%) than 2D phase-contrast (28.77 ± 21.01%).High-resolution 4D flow can assess hepatic artery anatomy and hemodynamics with improved accuracy, greater vessel visibility, better interobserver reliability, and internal consistency.• Motion-suppressed Cartesian four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI with higher spatial resolution provides more accurate measurements even when accepted respiratory motion exceeds voxel size. • 4D flow MRI with higher spatial resolution provides substantial interobserver agreement for visualization of hepatic artery branches. • Lower peak and average velocities and a trend toward better internal consistency were observed with 4D flow MRI as compared to 2D phase-contrast.

Abstract

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) facilitates mapping of the bulk magnetic susceptibility of tissue from the phase of complex gradient echo (GRE) MRI data. QSM phase processing combined with an R2* model of magnitude of multiecho gradient echo data (R2*QSM) allows separation of dia- and para-magnetic components (e.g., myelin and iron) that contribute constructively toR2* value but destructively to the QSM value of a voxel. This R2*QSM technique is validated against quantitative histology—optical density of myelin basic protein and Perls’ iron histological stains of rim and core of 10 ex vivo multiple sclerosis lesions, as well as neighboring normal appearing white matter. We found that R2*QSM source maps are in good qualitative agreement with histology, e.g., showing increased iron concentration at the edge of the rim+ lesions and myelin loss in the lesions’ core. Furthermore, our results indicate statistically significant correlation between paramagnetic and diamagnetic tissue components estimated with R2*QSM and optical densities of Perls’ and MPB stains. These findings provide direct support for the use of R2*QSM magnetic source separation based solely on GRE complex data to characterize MS lesion composition.

Abstract

Describe perceptions of COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccines, information sources, and levels and reasons for vaccine hesitancy among disability support workers (DSWs).Cross-sectional survey of 252 DSWs from across Australia, between early March and early April 2021. Perceptions of risk of COVID-19; government and media representations; vaccination status (Y/N); vaccine intentions (when offered, delayed vaccinators, vaccine refusers); reasons for hesitancy; confidence in safety and efficacy of vaccine; and information sources.At the time of the survey, fewer than 1% of DSWs had been vaccinated and 17% had been offered vaccination. Of those who had not had the vaccine, 47% said they would get it as soon as it was offered; 19% would not get the vaccine; 12% would have if required; 13% hadn't decided; and 8% would wait until it was available for a while. Reasons for hesitancy included inadequate safety data (70% delayed vaccinators, 79% vaccine refusers), side effects (63% delayed vaccinators, 58% refusers), and distrust in the government (17% delayed vaccinators, 52% refusers). DSWs most trusted sources of information were their own doctor, Chief Medical Officers, and governments. 61% believed that COVID-19 will only stop if most of the community is vaccinated and 53% agreed the chances of them or their clients getting COVID-19 would be reduced if they were vaccinated.Tailored information is needed to reduce vaccine hesitancy and increase confidence in COVID-19 vaccines among DSWs. The importance of getting vaccinated to prevent COVID-19 among people with disability should be emphasised.

Severe infections due to highly virulent and resistant Staphylococcus aureus pose a serious health threat in Bulgaria and worldwide. The purpose of this study was to explore the clonal spread of recent clinically significant methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) isolates from inpatients and outpatients treated in three university hospitals in Sofia, Bulgaria, during the period 2016–2020 and evaluate the relationship between their molecular epidemiology, virulence profiling, and antimicrobial resistance. A total of 85 isolates (invasive and noninvasive) were studied using RAPD analysis. Ten major clusters (A-K) were identified. The first major cluster A (31.8%) was found to be predominant during 2016 and 2017 and was widespread in two hospitals, unlike its case in the following years, when it was found to be replaced by newer cluster groups. All MSSA members of the second most common cluster F (11.8%) were recovered from the Military Medical Academy, mainly during 2018–2020, and were determined to be susceptible to all other groups of antimicrobials, except for penicillins without inhibitors because they harboured the blaZ gene. The newer cluster I, with 9.4% of the isolates absent in 2016–2017, showed significantly higher virulence and macrolide resistance (42.9%) due to ermB and ermC. All the isolated MSSA in groups F and I were nosocomial and mostly invasive. In conclusion, this 5-year study demonstrates the molecular epidemiology of MSSA infections in three Bulgarian hospitals. Findings can be helpful for the understanding of staphylococcal infection distribution in hospital settings and their prevention.

38. The role of cytoreductive surgery in multifocal/multicentric glioblastomas

Abstract

Purpose: Multifocal/multicentric glioblastomas (mGBM) account for up to 20% of all newly diagnosed glioblastomas. The present study investigates the impact of cytoreductive surgery on survival and functional outcomes in patients with mGBM.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed clinical and imaging data of 71 patients with newly diagnosed primary (IDH1 wildtype) mGBM who underwent operative treatment in 2015–2020 at the authors’ institution. Multicentric/multifocal growth was defined by the presence of ≥ 2 contrast enhancing lesions ≥ 1 cm apart from each other.Results: 36 (50.7%) patients had a resection and 35 (49.3%) a biopsy procedure. MGMT status, age, preoperative KPI and NANO scores as well as the postoperative KPI and NANO scores did not differ significantly between resected and biopsied cases. Median overall survival was 6.4 months and varied significantly with the extent of resection (GTR: 13.6, STR: 6.4, biopsy: 3.4 months; P = 0.043). 21 (58.3%) of resected vs. only 12 (34.3%) of biopsied cases had radiochemotherapy (p = 0.022). Multivariate analysis revealed chemo- and radiotherapy and also (albeit with smaller hazard ratios) extent of resection (resection vs. biopsy) and multicentric growth as independent predictors of patient survival. Involvement of eleoquent brain regions, as well as neurodeficit rates and functional outcomes did not vary significantly between the biopsy and the resection cohorts.Conclusion: Resective surgery in mGBM is associated with better survival. This benefit seems to relate prominently to an increased number of patients being able to tolerate effective adjuvant therapies after tumor resections. In addition, cytoreductive surgery may have a survival impact per se.

The basilikon coin was introduced shortly before 1304 by Emperor Andronikos in direct imitation of the Venetian silver ducat (grosso). The new coin was designed to replace the Latin coinage on the borders of the Empire as a result of Paleologian economic reforms and politics.

The report presents an early warning system against earthquakes of the conceptual design of the tunnels under the “Shipka” Pass. Bulgaria gives many victims on the roads - those killed in traffic crashes and accidents. In the case of tunnel facilities in seismic areas, chain accidents in tunnel pipes are particularly dangerous. Early warning systems for tunnels make it possible to immediately stop traffic by the traffic police or automatically, to include additional ventilation equipment and turn on the additional reserve lighting installations.

42. High-density direct laser deposition (DLD) of CM247LC alloy: microstructure, porosity and cracks

Abstract

Nickel-based alloys are known as non-weldable materials due to their complex characteristics. Consequently, additive manufacturing of these alloys is particularly challenging. In this paper, the influence of process parameters on the porosity, crack formation and microstructure of additively manufactured CM247LC nickel-based alloy is analysed. The feasibility of the direct laser deposition (DLD) process to manufacture crack-free and low-porosity CM247LC samples is studied. CM247LC samples were built on Inconel 718 that has similar chemical composition, to form hybrid superalloy parts. It was shown that crack-free and high-density CM247LC samples can be obtained through DLD without significant substrate preheating for certain parameter combinations: laser power in the range of 800–1000 W and powder feed rates between 6 and 8 g/min. High-cost and complex preheating was avoided that was commonly reported as necessary to achieve similar densities. For hybrid parts, a large beam diameter and slow scan speeds were employed to achieve optimal conditions as it was evident from the achieved bonding between the Inconel 718 substrate and the deposited layers. It was observed that good bonding between the two materials can be obtained with laser power values between 800 and 1000 W, scanning speed higher than 300 mm/min and powder flow rates of 6–8 g/min.

This paper presents the research of the gyrotropy of a pure Bi$$_{12}$$SiO$$_{20}$$ (BSO) and doped Bi$$_{12}$$SiO$$_{20}$$:Al (BSO:Al) crystals in the spectral region of ``absorption shoulder'' using measurements of the spectra of the natural optical rotation, the magneto-optical rotation and the optical spectroscopy. It is shown that the difference in the absorption of the BSO and BSO:Al crystals is related to the presence of two types of defects in the crystals BSO:Al – impurities $$\rm Al_{Si}^{3+}$$ in $$\rm[Al_{Si}^{3+}O_4]$$ and $$\rm Bi_{Si}^{3+}$$ in $$\rm[Bi_{Si}^{3+}O_4]$$. A ``red-shift'' of the optical rotation spectrum of BSO:Al crystals has also been observed relative to the optical rotation spectrum of BSO crystals.

44. Environmental and Anthropogenic Influence on the Core Beneficial Honeybee Gut Microbiota—A Short Communication from Bulgaria

Abstract

Bees’ and beehives’ health are strongly influenced by the honeybees’ gut microbiota which in turn is strongly dependent on many different factors, including environmental factors as well as anthropogenic pressure. In this study, in four locations in Bulgaria differing strongly in environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressure, an assessment was made using several obligatory core symbiont species and genera for reference, such as Lactobacillus sp., Bifidobacterium sp., Snodgrassiella alvi, Gilliamella apicola, Frishella perrara, and Commensalibacter sp., as well as an observation of the overall number of species. A snapshot of the relative abundances of the total number of species and the core species was made using a next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based metagenomic approach using the Illumina 2 × 250 bp paired-end platform. It was found that the two forms of anthropogenic pressure, the agricultural and the urban/industrial, have distinct effects, affecting different core genera and species. It was also demonstrated that both types of anthropogenic pressure cause a reduction in the overall number of bacterial species.

Average TDMY was 748.59±416.22 mL. The highest test day milk yield was in the first test day of ewes (1015.80±457.67 mL) and gradually decreased to seventh test day (267.50±120.05 mL). Abstract

Prebiotics, gut microbiota-fermentable substances, delay the development of type I diabetes. In the present study, we investigated the effect of two prebiotics (galacto-oligosaccharides and xylo-oligosaccharides) on the antioxidant protection, lipid profile, and inflammatory activity of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. The following markers were studied – malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), triacylglycerols, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoproteins, C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar experimental rats by streptozotocin injection, while the non-diabetic controls were injected with saline. Afterward the oligosaccharides were administered orally to the experimental animals. The blood collected following the decapitation was analyzed by ELISA. A modified protocol was used only for measuring the FRAP values. The galacto-oligosaccharides and xylo-oligosaccharides lowered the malondialdehyde levels in the diabetic rats (p p = 0.01), while the xylo-oligosaccharides increased the FRAP (p

Abstract

In this paper, we present and study highly efficient stochastic methods, including optimal super convergent methods for multidimensional sensitivity analysis of large-scale ecological models and digital twins. The computational efficiency (in terms of relative error and computational time) of the stochastic algorithms for multidimensional numerical integration has been studied to analyze the sensitivity of the digital ecosystem, namely the UNI-DEM model, which is particularly appropriate for connecting and orchestrating the many autonomous systems, infrastructures, platforms and data that constitute the bedrock of predicting and analyzing the consequences of possible climate changes. We deploy the digital twin paradigm in our consideration to study the output to variation of input emissions of the anthropogenic pollutants and to evaluate the rates of several chemical reactions.

Abstract

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are well-established knowledge acquisition systems with proven capacity for learning and generalisation. Therefore, ANNs are widely applied to solve engineering problems and are often used in laser-based manufacturing applications. There are different pattern recognition and control problems where ANNs can be effectively applied, and one of them is laser structuring/texturing for surface functionalisation, e.g. in generating Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS). They are a particular type of sub-micron structures that are very sensitive to changes in laser processing conditions due to processing disturbances like varying Focal Offset Distance (FOD) and/or Beam Incident Angle (BIA) during the laser processing of 3D surfaces. As a result, the functional response of LIPSS-treated surfaces might be affected, too, and typically needs to be analysed with time-consuming experimental tests. Also, there is a lack of sufficient process monitoring and quality control tools available for LIPSS-treated surfaces that could identify processing patterns and interdependences. These tools are needed to determine whether the LIPSS generation process is in control and consequently whether the surface’s functional performance is still retained. In this research, an ANN-based approach is proposed for predicting the functional response of ultrafast laser structured/textured surfaces. It was demonstrated that the processing disturbances affecting the LIPSS treatments can be classified, and then, the surface response, namely wettability, of processed surfaces can be predicted with a very high accuracy using the developed ANN tools for pre- and post-processing of LIPSS topography data, i.e. their areal surface roughness parameters. A Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) was applied as a pre-processing tool to significantly reduce the number of required experimental data. The number of areal surface roughness parameters needed to fully characterise the functional response of a surface was minimised using a combination of feature selection methods. Based on statistical analysis and evolutionary optimisation, these methods narrowed down the initial set of 21 elements to a group of 10 and 6 elements, according to redundancy and relevance criteria, respectively. The validation of ANN tools, using the salient surface parameters, yielded accuracy close to 85% when applied for identification of processing disturbances, while the wettability was predicted within an r.m.s. error of 11 degrees, equivalent to the static water contact angle (CA) measurement uncertainty.

Abstract

Tin phosphide (Sn4P3) is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries because of its relatively large theoretical capacity, appropriate Na+ alloying potential, and good cyclic stability. Herein, the Sn4P3 embedded into a carbon matrix with good rate performance and long cycle life is reported. The Sn4P3-C composite exhibits excellent rate performance (540 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1) and the highest reversible capacity (844 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1) among Sn4P3-based anodes reported so far. Its reversible capacity is as high as 705 mAh g−1 even after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. Besides, its initial Coulomb efficiency can reach 85.6%, with the average Coulomb efficiency exceeding 99.75% from the 3rd to 100th cycles. Na2C6O6 is firstly used as a cathode when Sn4P3 acts as anode, and the Na-Sn4P3-C//Na2C6O6 full cell shows excellent electrochemical performance. These results demonstrate that the Sn4P3-C composite prepared in this work displays high-rate capability and superior cyclic performance, and thus is a potential anode for sodium ion batteries.
