Currently, palladium represents an expensive and scarce element in the Earth's crust, with the mineral resources of platinum group metals (PGMs) predominately localized in South Africa and Russia. The growing demand for this material necessitates the development of suitable strategies to recover it from end-of-life devices. The recovery of palladium by combining leaching and sacrificial photocatalytic deposition in a low-waste process was proposed here as a possible alternative to the current technologies. The effect of the species involved in the single processes in the recirculated stream was evaluated, where a negligible influence of the sacrificial species (ethanol) in the leaching unit was noticed. Different home-prepared ZnO photocatalysts were tested, and the best performance in terms of recovery of palladium was obtained in the presence of ZnO nanoparticles prepared through sol–gel synthesis. The proposed procedure is a viable route for the recovery of Pd from spent catalysts: by combining the processes, the complete oxidation of palladium was observed in about 15 minutes, while the recovery of Pd through photodeposition on ZnO occurred within 120 minutes of irradiation.

Several studies have shown that combining TiO2 and Cu2O enhances the photocatalytic activity of the material by generating a heterojunction capable of extending the light absorption in the visible and reducing the electron-hole recombination rate. Ball milling has been chosen as an alternative methodology for photocatalyst preparation, among the several techniques documented in the literature review. The results of a previously reported investigation enabled the identification of the most effective photocatalyst that can be prepared for hydrogen generation by combining Cu2O and TiO2 (i.e., 1%wt. Cu2O in TiO2 photocatalyst prepared by ball-milling method at 200 rpm and 1 min milling time). To optimize photocatalytic hydrogen generation in the presence of the greatest photocatalyst, the effects of (i) sacrificial species and their concentration, (ii) temperature, and (iii) pH of the system are taken into account, resulting in a light-to-chemical energy efficiency of 8% under the best-tested conditions. Last but not least, the possibility of using the present photocatalytic system under direct solar light irradiation is evaluated: the results indicate that nearly 60% of the hydrogen production recorded under sunlight can be attributed to the visible component of the solar spectrum, while the remaining 40% can be attributed to the UV component.

The enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose from biomass feedstock in the sugar-based biorefinery chain is penalized by enzyme cost and difficulty to approach the theoretical maximum cellulose conversion degree. As a consequence, the process is currently investigated to identify the best operating conditions with reference to each biomass feedstock. The present work reports an investigation regarding the enzymatic hydrolysis of apple pomace (AP). AP is an agro-food waste largely available in Europe that might be exploited as a sugar source for biorefinery purposes. A biomass pre-treatment step was required before the enzymatic hydrolysis to make available polysaccharides chains to the biocatalyst. The AP samples were pre-treated through alkaline (NaOH), acid (HCl), and enzymatic (laccase) delignification processes to investigate the effect of lignin content and polysaccharides composition on enzymatic hydrolysis. Enzymatic hydrolysis tests were carried out using a commercial cocktail (Cellic®CTec2) of cellulolytic enzymes. The effect of mixing speed and biomass concentration on the experimental overall glucose production rate was assessed. The characterization of the glucose production rate by the assessment of pseudo-homogeneous kinetic models was proposed. Data were analysed to assess kinetic parameters of pseudo-mechanistic models able to describe the glucose production rate during AP enzymatic hydrolysis. In particular, pseudo-homogeneous Michaelis and Menten, as well as Chrastil’s models were used. The effect of lignin content on the enzymatic hydrolysis rate was evaluated. Chrastil’s model provided the best description of the glucose production rate.

The problem of the formation of unwanted substances that can occur during thermal decomposition of chemicals is studied from a toxicological point of view. Two species, ethyl parathion (a widely used pesticide) and cumene hydroperoxide (an intermediate for the industrial production of phenol and acetone), are selected for this investigation. The hazards associated to their accidental thermal decomposition are estimated on the basis of the (known) intermediates and products formed by means of a computational tool (ECOSAR programme) and assessed experimentally by means of algal bioassays. Green alga Pseudokirchneriella is used as target organism for all the toxicological assessments. The results of these tests on the samples collected during the thermal decomposition of the two studied species indicate that in the case of ethyl parathion the decomposition process gives rise to a mixture of compounds which are more toxic than the parent species. On the other hand, the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide in cumene results into the formation of different species whose toxicity towards the adopted organism is lower than that shown by the starting compound. A procedure is proposed to ascertain when it is necessary or it is avoidable to carry out further investigations that involve the analytical resolution of mixtures resulting from the thermal decomposition process. This approach is suggested as a preliminary screening to identify the hazards associated with an accidental decomposition either of pure chemicals or of mixtures of compounds. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
