Contains fulltext : 111830.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Social innovation of work and employment are prerequisites to achieve the EU2020 objectives of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It covers labour market innovation on societal level and workplace innovation on organisational level. This paper focuses on the latter. Workplace innovations are social both in their ends (quality of working life, well-being and development of talents together with organisational performance) and in their means (employee participation and empowerment). Complementary to technological innovations they regard innovations in social aspects of organisations such as work organisation, HRM and work relations. Workplace innovation – or innovative workplaces as it is sometimes called – deserves to be better incorporated in EU policies, as also has been recommended by the European Economic and Social Committee and the OECD. Some countries have experienced the benefits of national campaigns already.

TNO, Sozial-Forshungsstelle Dortmund (SFS Dortmund), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) en Flanders Synergy (FS) hebben samen op 26 en 27 april in Dortmund een workshop georganiseerd om hun ideeën over sociale innovatie binnen organisaties (Workplace Innovation) op elkaar af te stemmen. Hun startnotitie hebben ze op 30 mei in Brussel gepresenteerd aan vertegenwoordigers van de Europese Commissie (DG Enterprise & Industry, DG Research, DG Regions, DG Employment) en van een twintigtal andere organisaties (o.a. BAS-F, Industrieraad Vlaanderen, Tekes, DTI, UKWON, Philips, etc.). Deze partijen zijn akkoord gegaan met de Position Paper die TNO, SFS Dortmund, KU Leuven en FS hebben opgesteld. De Dortmund/Brussels Position Paper on Workplace Innovation wordt eind juni door Edwin van Vlierberghe (ondervoorzitter van Flanders Synergy), Mieke Van Gramberen (directeur FS) en prof.dr. Steven Dhondt (TNO) voorgesteld aan de Enterprise Policy Group (EPG). Meer dan twintig kennisinstellingen over heel Europa hebben de Position Paper ondertekend. Vanuit TNO hebben Steven Dhondt, Peter Oeij, Klaas ten Have en Fietje Vaas in belangrijke mate aan dit document bijgedragen. Een belangrijk doel van het document is om voor de Europese Commissie te schetsen welke stappen er in Europa nodig zijn om Workplace Innovation een plaats te geven. De Europese Commissie heeft de behoefte om Workplace Innovation een plaats te geven in haar Social Innovation Europe-strategie.

Plant growth is readily analysed at the macroscopic level by measuring size and/or mass. Although it is commonly known that the rate of growth is determined by cell division and subsequent cell expansion, relatively few studies describing growth phenotypes include studies of the dynamics of these processes. Kinematic analyses provide a powerful and rigorous framework to perform such studies and have been adapted to the specific characteristics of various plant organs. Here we describe in detail how to perform these analyses in root tips and leaves of the model species Arabidopsis thaliana and in the leaves of the monocotyledonous crop species, Zea mays. These methods can be readily used and adapted to suit other species in most laboratories.
