General Medicine - Abstract
Pursuing research as an undergraduate student deepens and enhances both your college experience and your post college plans. Whether someone hopes to go to graduate school, medical school, or into the workforce, the lessons you learn during a research project will further your abilities and potential. In this essay, we reflect on four lessons that we learned during our first full-time nine-week research project: (1) Do it, (2) Learn to thrive at the interface of knowledge and ignorance, (3) Embrace failure, and (4) Build confidence for the future. We use our experiences to identify key areas of growth, both personal and professional, that we gained as we moved from class-based students to researchers exploring at the edge of current knowledge.

General Medicine - Abstract
The last three decades or so have seen a proliferation of studies into second language (L2) teachers’ cognition, encompassing their thinking, knowledge, and belief. However, studies are lacking into the origins (or sources) of L2 teachers’ beliefs especially ideological beliefs. This paper reports a subset of findings from a study investigating the beliefs and classroom practices of secondary school EFL teachers in Indonesia. Aiming to reveal ideological beliefs about English and ELT held by the teachers and the perceived origins of such beliefs, the paper draws on data obtained from a total of 16 interviews. Data analysis revealed that the teachers held beliefs that reflect several categories of English language ideologies prevalent in the ELT setting. These ideological beliefs were perceived to originate from several factors such as schoolteacher’s talk about English, schoolteacher’s classroom practice, undergraduate education, graduate education, fellow teachers, colleagues in an English teacher forum, and textbooks used for teaching. The paper concludes with implications for English teacher education programs and suggestions for future research

One factor that could contribute to the developing of gastric ulcer is stress. Fluvoxamine, an SSRI antidepressant showed protective effects to ulcers when administered before stress induction. In opposite, administration of fluvoxamine after stress induction delayed the mucosa healing. This study aimed to investigate the effects of pre-treatment and post-treatment of buspirone a 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist in the inhibition of gastric mucosal protection and healing by fluvoxamine in animals with stress-induced gastric ulcers. This study used ddY, male mice, weighed 25-30grams, which divided into two groups, pre-treatment and post-treatment groups. Each group consisted of subgroups that were administered low doses of buspirone (0.1mg/Kg and 0.3mg/Kg) and high doses of buspirone (10.0mg/Kg and 30.0mg/Kg). In the pre-treatment group, buspirone was administered intraperitoneally at 60 minutes before and continued with oral fluvoxamine 100mg/Kg administration at 30 minutes before stress induction. In the post-treatment group, buspirone was administered intraperitoneally followed fluvoxamine orally 30 minutes after stress induction done. The stress model used is water immersion restrain stress for 6 hours. In the pre-treatment group, the combination of high dose, but not low dose buspirone significantly inhibit the protection effects of fluvoxamine on stress-induced gastric ulcers. In addition, in the post-treatment group, the combination of low dose buspirone and fluvoxamine strengthen the delays of mucosal healing by fluvoxamine in mice with stress-induced gastric ulcers. Fluvoxamine protects and heals gastric mucosa from stress-induced gastric ulcer through the activation of 5HT1A receptor.

We present an implementation of a damped response framework for calculating resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the equation-of-motion coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) and second-order approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles (CC2) levels of theory in the open-source program $e^T$. This framework lays the foundation for future extension to higher excitation methods (notably, the coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples, CC3) and to multilevel approaches. Our implementation adopts a fully relaxed ground state, and different variants of the core-valence separation projection technique to address convergence issues. Illustrative results are compared with those obtained within the frozen-core core-valence separated approach, available in Q-Chem, as well as with experiment. The performance of the CC2 method is evaluated in comparison with that of CCSD. It is found that, while the CC2 method is noticeably inferior to CCSD for X-ray absorption spectra, the quality of the CC2 RIXS spectra is often comparable to that of the CCSD level of theory, when the same valence excited states are probed. Finally, we present preliminary RIXS results for a solvated molecule in aqueous solution.

General Medicine ,General Chemistry - Abstract
Inclusion of linguistic repertoire in the English language classroom has been an issue of ongoing debate among ELT scholars. While some believe in the effectiveness of English-only (monolingual) pedagogy, others view linguistic repertoire as resource that can benefit English language learning. Following a bi/multilingual approach to ELT, this paper reports findings of a qualitative study investigating four Indonesian English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teachers’ beliefs and practices, focusing on (1) how the teachers used shared linguistic repertoire during English language instruction and (2) how their uses of shared linguistic repertoire facilitated classroom interactions. Data sources included interviews, classroom observations, and documents. The findings demonstrate that uses of shared linguistic repertoire facilitated both teacher-learner and learner-learner interactions, serving a range of pedagogical functions. This paper concludes by providing implications for teacher education and suggesting areas for future research.

General Medicine - Abstract
BACKGROUND: Elderly patients are associated with an increasing prevalence of chronic degenerative diseases which need emergency services which can be a factor in the occurrence of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM). The use of PIM increases the risk of patients requiring hospitalization, drug-related problems, and adverse health outcomes with a prevalence of up to 2–3 times. AIM: This study aimed to determine the possible incidence of admission and discharge events on PIM in Elderly patients (>60 years old) visiting the emergency department (ED). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective and observational study at Universitas Airlangga Teaching Hospital in Surabaya for 4 months. This study involved Elderly patients who visited the ED. The 2019 Beers criteria were used to identify the use of PIM. Spearman rho analysis was used to determine the relationship between the possibility of hospital admission and the discharge of patients with PIM. RESULTS: Most patients were female (50.4%) and aged 60−96. The percentage of elderly patients who received PIM and hospital admission was 73.1%, while those who received PIM and hospital discharge were 26.9%. The Spearman rho analysis showed a weak relationship between the possibility of hospital admission or discharge (p-value 0.000, R 0.255) with PIM. CONCLUSION: There is a weak but significant correlation between PIM and patient admission and discharge. Elderly patients are more at risk of being hospitalized due to PIM. The number of ED patients who received PIM had a high prevalence of being hospitalized compared to patients who did not receive PIM.

Li Coagulopathy is a common predictor of mortality in COVID-19. Meanwhile, enoxaparin is an anticoagulant with anti-inflammatory, endothelial protection, and viral antagonist properties. Therefore, thromboprophylaxis with enoxaparin in COVID-19 is common in clinical settings. This study aims to assess enoxaparin's efficacy across different severity levels by examining its effect on primary outcomes comprising Length of stay (LOS), invasive mechanical ventilation, and mortality as well as secondary in the form of D-dimer, platelets, C-reactive protein (CRP), Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), and Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC). During hospitalization, 269 patients received enoxaparin across varying severity levels comprising mild, moderate, and severe, while the Wilcoxon test was used to analyze the efficacy in each group. Additionally, the differences in patient characteristic profiles across the severity levels were determined using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The increase in mortality rate and the need for mechanical ventilation were directly proportional to the level of severity. D-dimer decreased from 1308.87 ng/ml to 979.83 ng/ml (p=

- Abstract
Long-term COVID-19 could occur in COVID-19 patients, affecting the patient's quality of life, and becoming a problem for public health. However, information is rarely on factors associated with the occurrence of long COVID-19 cases. This study analyzed factors associated with long-term COVID-19. The study was an observational cross-sectional, conducted in August 2021. The data were collected through a Google form questionnaire distributed to COVID-19 survivors in Indonesian. They must be aged more than 17 years to meet the inclusion criteria, while those with incomplete data were excluded. The data were processed by using SPSS 21 with an ordinal regression test in which an alpha level was 5%. As many as 101 from 16 men (15.8%) and 85 women (84.2%) were obtained. Comorbid status (p-value = 0.001) and duration of treatment (p-value = 0.034 and 0.015) had a significant association with the occurrence of long-term COVID-19. Meanwhile, age, gender, occupation, type of care, and vaccination status were not likely associated with long-term COVID-19. COVID-19 patients with comorbidity and a long duration of treatment are more likely to experience long-term COVID-19. Keywords: COVID-19, long-term COVID-19, factor, public health

This paper argues that in many sociological theorizing on gender, work, and employment, relatively little is known about how men who engage in female dominated informal works make sense of their gendered identities. Drawing from qualitative research in a rapidly urbanizing Ghanaian city, we examine the meanings and implications of men’s involvement in gender atypical informal works. An unpacking of the constructions of gendered identity reveals the situative strategies that men may deploy to maintain, embolden, and/or adjust their masculinities congruent with dominant cultural scripts. In the end, we argue that men who engage in traditionally feminine work are accused of failing to herald the mainstreaming of the fulfillment of hegemonic masculinity which is a necessary cultural milestone.

In this article, our aim is to foreground men's discourses on gender-based violence as linked to gendered hierarchies, power struggles, and social respectability in Ghana. Situated within decolonial feminist theories and drawing on interviews, we argue that men's interpretations of masculinity and the possibility of perpetrating violence against women is significantly mediated by such intersectional factors as sociocultural background, education, and broader societal normative requirements. The findings deepen the understanding of the ambiguities and contradictions that characterize men's talk of violence. The article discusses how these ambiguities and contradictions serve as important domains for engendering critical attitudes toward violence against women.

Economics and Econometrics ,Finance - Abstract
Purpose This study purposely re‐examine the mortgage–finance nexus in Africa. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a panel data set spanning over the period 1995–2017 by using system generalized method of moments (GMM) dynamic pooled estimator developed by Arellano and Bond (1991) and Arellano and Bover (1995) involving 51 African countries. Findings The findings discovered that financial development (bank asset) affects mortgage development positively and this effect is highly significant while broad money supply as a measure of financial development impedes mortgage development in Africa. Furthermore, with the introduction of the quadratic term, broad money supply established a U-shaped relationship with mortgage financing indicating that more money in circulation facilitates mortgage development in Africa. However, the shape of the other variables depends largely on the nature of proxy used. Originality/value This study is unique in many aspects. First, examining the extant literature on the financial development and mortgage financing nexus, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no study is cited at the African level with this relationship. Secondly is the empirical model, as it used the system GMM dynamic pooled estimator developed by Arellano and Bond (1991) and Arellano and Bover (1995) to establish whether there is any effect of finance–mortgage nexus.

- Abstract
Green spaces such as forests, grasslands, and croplands are often characteristic of urban environments. Although they benefit human and animal well-being, they have become threatened due to rapid urban growth and unplanned development. In this study, we examined the dynamics of land use and land cover (LULC) change and fragmentation (especially, green spaces) within the second fastest urbanising city in Ghana, Tamale. In particular, we focused our analyses on its urban core (~ 5 km radius around the city centre) due to its relevance to urban economy and society. Landsat data from 1990, 2002, 2012, and 2022 were used to estimate fragmentation metrics of past and future LULC changes. We found clear patterns of green space decline and fragmentation within the urban core: i.e., green spaces became smaller over time and the pattern was expected to continue in the future (e.g., 1990 = 92.66 km2; 2022 = 59.78 km2; 2052 = 31.42 km2). Additionally, we found the built-up class benefited from the decline of green spaces. Our investigation suggests that protected forests and tree plantations contributed to a significant proportion of available green spaces in the urban core. However, these areas were increasingly becoming threatened by indiscriminate activities such as logging and encroachment by private developers. Hence, we emphasise the need for enforcement of existing legislations such as the 2002 Forest Protection (Amendment) and 2016 Land Use and Spatial Planning Acts which collectively seek to ensure the sustainability of forest and urban systems for the well-being of humans and the environment.

- Abstract
T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin (Tim)4 is expressed on APCs, including macrophages, as one of the main amplifiers in the mechanism of liver ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Though donor Tim4 selectively expressed on Kupffer cells serves as a checkpoint regulator of innate immune-driven IRI cascades, its role on cells outside the OLT remains unclear. To dissect the role of donor vs. recipient-specific Tim4 signaling in IR-induced stress and hepatocellular function, we employed a murine OLT model utilizing Tim4-knockout (KO) mice as either donor or recipient (WT → WT, WT → Tim4-KO, Tim4-KO → WT). In the experimental arm, disruption of donor Tim4 attenuated IRI-OLT damage, while recipient Tim4-null mutation aggravated hepatic IRI concomitant with disturbed lipid metabolism, enhanced endoplasmic reticulum stress, and activated pro-apoptotic signaling in the grafts. In the in vitro study, murine hepatocytes co-cultured with Tim4-null adipose tissue showed enhanced C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) expression pattern and susceptibility to hepatocellular death accompanied by activated caspase cascade in response to TNF-α stimulation. In the clinical arm, liver grafts from forty-one transplant patients with enhanced TIM4 expression showed higher body mass index, augmented hepatic endoplasmic reticulum stress, enhanced pro-apoptotic markers, upregulated innate/adaptive immune responses, exacerbated hepatocellular damage, and inferior graft survival. In conclusion, although TIM4 is considered a principal villain in peri-transplant early tissue injury, recipient TIM4 signaling may serve as a savior of IR-triggered metabolic stress in mouse and human OLT recipients.

General Environmental Science - Abstract
Introduction: Although artisanal gold mining has contributed to livelihoods in many rural communities across the world, it has destroyed and polluted several water bodies. Methods: Using Prestea in the southwestern region of Ghana, this paper demonstrates how artisanal gold mining has culminated in the pollution of freshwater bodies and the ecosystem. A non-probabilistic purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of twelve artisanal gold mining communities. We used participant observation, in-depth interviews with stakeholders, a review of policy and legal documents, reports from media websites, and site visits to various artisanal gold mining sites. We observed that artisanal gold mining has destroyed major rivers, which used to serve as major sources of water supply for domestic and irrigation purposes. To achieve benign production, the Ghanaian government over the years has made efforts to formalize the operations of galamsey activities through six main routes: policy intervention, a complete ban on their activities, military strategy, national dialogue, alternative livelihood programs, and community mining. We assessed the sustainability of three of these measures (i.e., policy intervention, a complete ban on ASM, and the military strategy). Results: We found that none of these approaches is sustainable, as the miners continue to defy the orders and military brutalities and return to mining sites to continue their operations. Conclusion: Therefore, acknowledging ASM as a significant tool for reducing poverty and its pertinent contribution to the larger economy, providing tax exemptions and incentives to informal miners to boost their production, involving local mining communities and subaltern miners in mineral governance and decision-making, removing bureaucracies and lowering costs to make the registration of new ASM businesses easier, and strengthening the mine regulatory infrastructure are necessary to formalize the sector.

Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health - Abstract
IntroductionDiabetes mellitus is a fast-rising non-contagious disease of global importance that remains a leading cause of indisposition and death. Evidence shows that effective management of diabetes has a close link with continuity of care which is known to be the integral pillar of quality care. This study, therefore, sought to determine the extent of continuity of care between diabetic patients and their care providers as well as factors associated with relational continuity of care.MethodologyThis cross-sectional, facility-based study was conducted among diabetics in Accra, Ghana. We sampled 401 diabetic patients from three diabetic clinics in the region using a stratified and systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire containing information on socio-demographic characteristics, the four dimensions of continuity of care, and patients' satisfaction. A 5-point Likert scale was used to measure patient's perception of relational, flexible, and team continuity, while most frequent provider continuity was used to measure longitudinal continuity of care. Scores were added for each person and divided by the highest possible score for each domain to estimate the continuity of care index. Data were collected and exported to Stata 15 for analysis.ResultsThe results show that team continuity was the highest (0.9), followed by relational and flexibility continuity of care (0.8), and longitudinal continuity of care was the least (0.5). Majority of patients experienced high team (97.3%), relational (68.1%), and flexible (65.3%) continuity of care. Most patients (98.3%) were satisfied with the diabetes care they received from healthcare providers. Female subjects had higher odds of experiencing relational continuity of care as compared to male subjects. Furthermore, participants with higher educational levels were five times more likely to experience relational continuity of care than those with lower educational background.ConclusionThe study demonstrated that the majority of diabetics had team continuity of care being the highest experienced among the four domains, followed by flexible and longitudinal being the least experienced. Notably, team and flexible continuity of care had a positive association with relational continuity of care. Higher educational level and being female were associated with relational continuity of care. There is therefore the need for policy action on the adoption of multidisciplinary team-based care.

Introduction The pelvic floor muscles (PFM) have been suggested to play a key role in sexual function and sexual response in women. However, current syntheses of the evidence have been limited to interventional studies investigating the effect of modalities targeting the PFM on sexual function in women with pelvic pain and pelvic floor disorders. The literature has therefore never been critically appraised while excluding these potential confounders, which prevents to fully capture and understand the involvement of the PFM in sexual function and sexual response. Objective To examine and synthesize the available evidence on: i) the effects of PFM training on sexual function in women without pelvic pain or pelvic disorders, ii) the association between PFM function and sexual function/response and iii) the differences in the PFM function between women with and without sexual dysfunctions. Methods Electronic databases including Medline, Cochrane, CENTRAL, CINAHL, Psycinfo, Sportdiscuss, AMED, Scopus and EMBASE were searched using a peer-reviewed search strategy. We also performed a hand search of the references of all relevant articles and a grey literature search. Main outcomes included sexual function (self-reported questionnaire), sexual response (physiological test) and PFM function (strength and tone assessed with various assessment tools). We included interventional studies (randomized controlled trials and non-randomized studies) investigating the effects of PFM training on sexual outcomes as well as observational studies examining the association between PFM function (strength and tone) and sexual outcomes or the differences in PFM function in women with and without sexual dysfunctions. Quality of selected studies was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool by a team of two reviewers and disagreements were resolved by consensus or involvement of a third-party. Results The literature search resulted in 33 eligible studies including 14 interventional studies and 19 observational studies. Most studies (31/33) were of moderate quality or higher. Overall, 10 of the 14 interventional studies reported that PFM training had a significant effect on sexual function. Of the 11 observational studies investigating the association between PFM function and sexual function, 8 showed significant correlations (ranging from weak to strong) with sexual satisfaction, lubrication, arousal, orgasm or overall sexual function. Of the observational studies, 7 supported the involvement of the PFM as part of the sexual response (i.e. in the arousal and orgasm phases). Regarding the 3 studies evaluating the differences in the PFM function of women with and without sexual dysfunctions, the results were conflicting. Conclusions Findings of this review support the involvement of the PFM in sexual function and in sexual response in women without pain and pelvic dysfunctions. This review supports the need to further investigate modalities targeting the PFM as part of the management for sexual dysfunctions. Disclosure No
