IntroductionLaboratory services are crucial parts of the health system having a great contribution to disease prevention and management. The importance of accurate and reliable laboratory test results is less recognized in developing countries like Ethiopia where most medical decisions are based on clinical judgment. It is time for countries like Ethiopia to not only increase health care coverage but also improve access to essential diagnostic tests. Hence, this proposed study aims to assess essential in-vitro laboratory service provision in accordance with the WHO standards in Guragae Zone primary health care unit level, South Ethiopia.MethodsHealth institution-based cross-sectional study was carried out. 30% randomly selected primary health care units were recruited. Each facility was visited with a WHO checklist by a trained data collector to assess the availability of essential diagnostics service provision. The proportion of available in-vitro diagnostics services was calculated. Results were presented as percentages in tables and figures.ResultTwenty-one primary health care facilities located in Guragae Zone were assessed between May and July 2019. All surveyed facilities had major gaps in essential test availability. Among essential diagnostic tests listed with WHO like C-reactive protein, lipid profile, Amylase and Lipase, TroponinT/I, hepatitis B e-antigen, IgM-specific antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen, Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, and anti-HIV/p24 rapid test were not provided in any facilities. However, essential diagnostic services like urine dipstick testing, random blood sugar, smear microscopy, and few serological tests were provided at all primary health care units. All surveyed facilities had limited major laboratory equipment and consumables.Conclusion and recommendationThe present study shows limited access to essential laboratory tests at the primary health care level. Hence, the responsible body should invest to make essential tests accessible at the primary care unit level within the framework of universal health coverage in the study area. The fact that access to essential diagnostic tests is the first key step in improving quality of care; such study has its own efforts to enable the implementation of essential diagnostic lists, and improve access to diagnostics in the country.

Background Anthrax is a zoonotic disease endemic in Ethiopia. Despite anthrax preventive measures are the key activities to control the disease, several outbreaks have occurred in Ethiopia recently. The objective of the study was therefore to assess the anthrax preventive practice and its associated factors among farmers in Farta district, South Gondar zone, Northwest Ethiopia. Method A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among farmers in Farta District from June 7 to 21/2020. A multi-stage sampling technique, with systematic random sampling, was used to select 1,338 study participants. Data were collected through a face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire. The data were cleaned, coded, and entered into the Epi-data v 3.1 and then exported to SPSS v 23 for analysis. In the bi-variable regression analysis, the variables having a p-value of less than 0.2 were entered into a multivariable logistic regression to control the effect of confounding. Those independent variables with P-value less than 0.05 were taken as statistically significant factors associated with anthrax prevention practice. Results The proportion of farmers who had good anthrax prevention practice was 35.8% [95% CI 33%, 38%]. Being female (AOR = 2.96; 95% CI 2.18, 4.02), able to read and write (AOR = 1.48, 95% CI 1.08, 2.03), time spent to arrive at a nearby veterinary clinic (AOR = 1.35; 95%CI 1.01, 1.79), heard about anthrax (AOR = 4.54; 95%CI 2.96, 6.95), and had a favorable attitude towards anthrax preventions (AOR = 3.70; 95%CI 2.77, 4.94) were significantly associated with anthrax prevention practice. Conclusions The practice of anthrax prevention was low. Sex, educational status, time spent to arrive at the nearby veterinary clinic, knowledge about anthrax, and attitude towards anthrax prevention were significantly associated with anthrax prevention practice. Health education to create a favorable attitude and the establishment of veterinary clinics in the nearby locations are recommended to improve anthrax preventive practices in the study area., Anthrax, Prevention practice, Zoonotic disease, Ethiopia.

Asking patients what they think how they feel about the health service they have received is an important step towards improving the quality of care and, ensuring that local health services are meeting clients needs and expectations. Facility- based cross-sectional study was conducted from April 1-7, 2019 in randomly selected primary hospitals found in Guraghe zone. There were 266 randomly selected patients who attended the primary hospitals were participated in the study. Data was collected using a interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 21. Multiple logistic regression analysis used to identify predictors of patient satisfaction. The overall of patient satisfaction level with the health service provided at the outpatient departments of the primary hospitals was 66.5% (95% C.I. 60.8%-72.2%). waiting time (AOR 3.65), informing patients about cause of illness (AOR, 2.46) and waiting area cleanliness (AOR 2.33) were among the significant predictors of patients satisfaction. Acknowledging the limitation of the cross-sectional study design findings of this study indicate that waiting time, telling the cause of illness, cleanliness of the waiting area are important predictors of patient satisfaction.

Background: Cancer figures among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. More than 60% of world total new annual cancer cases occur in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. In Ethiopia, cancer accounts for about 5.8% of total national mortality. The increasing burden of common non communicable diseases such as cancer leads to epidemiological shift of disease burden to non-infectious diseases. However, lesser emphasis is given to cancer. Although, measuring the burden is important to design prevention strategy, a comprehensive estimate is lacking in Ethiopia. Hence, we aimed to systematically measure the burden of cancer in Ethiopia. Methods: The research used data from Global burden of disease study (GBD 2016) and Global health Estimate 2016; that originally collected the information through vital registration, verbal autopsy, surveys, reports, published scientific articles and modeling. Results: In 2016, cancer caused an estimated 50913.5 (95% CI: 36092.1–73018.8) deaths among all age and both gender groups with a crude death rate of 49.7/100,000 and ASDR of 93.5/100,000 population. It contributed for 18.5% of NCD related death and 7.3% of total death, 16.9% of NCR related ASDR and 9% of total ASDR, and 12.7% of national NCD related DALYs and 4.3% of the national total DALYs. The number of death and DALYs from cancer has been increased by 47.4% and 45.1% respectively. Whereas CDR and ASDR from cancer has been declined by 4.2% and 9.7% respectively. The top five causes of cancer related mortality was from Other malignant neoplasms, breast cancer, cervix uteri cancer, colon and rectum cancers, and leukemia whereas lymphomas along with the aforementioned cancers contribute for the highest cancer DALYs. Conclusion and recommendation : the burden of malignant neoplasms (cancer) is remarkably increasing throughout the periods between 2000 and 2016. It carries the higher burden of age standardized death rate (ASDR) from NCD. Specifically, other malignant neoplasms, Breast cancer, cervix uteri cancer, colon and rectum cancers, leukemia and lymphomas caused the highest burden of cancer. Therefore, the existing disease prevention strategies should incorporate NCD prevention strategies with a particular emphasis for cancer screening, prevention and care.

Background. The continuing rise in the burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is a key global health agendum due to the fact that NCDs cause more deaths than all other causes combined together. Although measuring the burden of NCD is very important to improve the existing health care systems and to monitor the progress of the program, a comprehensive estimate is lacking in Ethiopia. Hence, we aimed to systematically analyze the existing evidence to bring a solution. Methods. The research used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD 2016) and Global Health Estimates 2016 that originally collected the information through vital registration, verbal autopsy, surveys, reports, and modeling. Results. In 2016, NCD caused an estimated 274998.8 (95% CI: 211290.2–362882.1) deaths among all ages and both genders with a crude death rate of 268.5/100000 and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) of 554.7/100000 population. It contributed to 39.3% of the total death, 53% of ASDR, and 34% of DALYs. The number of deaths and DALYs from NCD has increased by 38% and 31.5%, respectively, whereas CDR and ASDR from NCD have declined by 10.3% and 12.5%, respectively. Cardiovascular diseases, malignant neoplasms, digestive diseases, respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus, and neurological conditions were the leading level 2 causes of ASDR due to NCD, while ischemic heart disease, stroke, other circulatory diseases, cirrhosis of the liver, and COPD were the top 5 causes of ASDR from NCD at level 3 causes. Conclusion and Recommendation. The burden of NCD was remarkably increased between 2000 and 2016. It carries the highest burden of ASDR. Cardiovascular diseases and malignant neoplasms were the two most common causes of mortality and DALYs. Therefore, the existing disease prevention strategies should be strengthened by incorporating strategies addressing noncommunicable diseases.

Intestinal parasitic infections are among the most common on causes of disease in humans, responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality. Commonly consumed raw vegetables and fruits are among the ways through which humans become infected with parasites of medical importance. A prospective cross-sectional study with an aim of describing the parasite contamination rate of raw fresh vegetables and fruits sold at the central open-aired market of Butajira and Wolkite towns, in southern Ethiopia was conducted on a total of 270 fresh vegetable and fruits samples. Standardized parasitological techniques were employed to detect diagnostic stages of parasites.98 out of the 270 (36.3%) samples were found positive for intestinal parasites. Remarkably, twenty eight out of the forty five cabbage samples analyzed, 62.2%, were found to be contaminated with parasites of medical importance, registering the highest level of contamination. On the contrary Avocado was found to be the least contaminated produce with contamination rate of 17.7% (8/45). Significant association was observed between the kind of vegetables analyzed and existence of parasites (p=0.002). This study identified high rate of contamination in commonly consumed vegetables and fruits. The authors believe that the role fruits and vegetables paly in the transmission of intestinal parasitic infections to humans is un questionable. Substantial attention is needed from all relevant bodies to tackle this problem.
