CONTEXT: Although, many studies have been made on the clinical course of autoimmune thyroiditis, this study focused on women and the factors effecting the natural course such as Selenium. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) clinical course in adults and the factors that could affect it. DESIGN: The study was in a retrospective manner between 2010-2018. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 101 patients with HT were followed for 60.7±32.7 months. Biochemical and ultrasonographic data were collected. We investigated whether the age at diagnosis, family history, smoking habits, levothyroxine replacement therapy, and serum selenium (Se) levels influenced the disease course. RESULTS: No relationship was observed between age and thyroid functions, thyroid volumes (TV), and autoantibody (Ab) levels at diagnosis. Ab levels were irrelevant with TV, echogenicity, and nodularity at diagnosis. However, initial TSH levels were significantly associated with anti-TPO levels (p=0.028, r=0.218). WOS: 000269782800005, PubMed: 19541303, Objective: To evaluate retrospectively the prevalence of cervical cytological abnormalities in patient records obtained from healthcare centers in Turkey. Method: Demographic characteristics and data on cervical cytological abnormalities were evaluated from patients who underwent flap tests in healthcare centers in 2007. Results: Data were collected from 33 healthcare centers totaling 140 334 patients. Overall, the prevalence of cervical cytological abnormalities was 1.8%; the prevalence of ASCUS, ASC-H, LSIL, HSIL, and AGC was 1.07%, 0.07%, 0.3%, 0.17%, and 0.08%, respectively. The prevalence of preinvasive cervical neoplasia was 1.7% and the prevalence of cytologically diagnosed invasive neoplasia was 0.06%. Conclusion: The abnormal cervical cytological prevalence rate in Turkey is lower than in Europe and North America. This might be due to sociocultural differences, lack of population-based screening programs, or a lower HPV prevalence rate in Turkey. (C) 2009 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics. The detection of seasonal effects is essential in economic forecasting. However, the lack of indicators produced referencing calendars other than the Gregorian system makes it hard to observe the impact of the cultural, national, and religious days that annually shift in the Gregorian calendar, on the economy. Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar-based Hijri calendar, has an impact on many issues, namely the Ramadan effect, due to the changes in the daily practices of the fasting Muslim people. We checked the existence of the Ramadan effect on consumer prices and industrial production in Turkey by reconstructing the monthly indicators in the Hijri calendar and testing the significance of the differences between their increase rates in Ramadan and other months. We observed that the Food Price Index and prices of some goods increase, and production decrease in Ramadan, significantly more than in other months. Considering the Ramadan effect would improve the accuracy of the inflation forecasting and seasonal adjustment models.

Despite advances in the detection and treatment, the long-term survival of patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains poor, with a 5-year overall survival (OS) of less than 5%. We conducted this observational study to determine the influence of docetaxel plus cisplatin combination chemotherapy on response, time to progression (TTP) and OS, and to evaluate its tolerability in chemotherapy-naïve patients with metastatic NSCLC.Patients with histologically or cytologically confirmed stage IV NSCLC who met the following criteria were eligible for the study: no previous chemotherapy, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status (PS) 0-2, objectively measurable disease, adequate bone marrow reserve, normal hepatic and renal function. Patients received docetaxel 75 mg/m(2) and cisplatin 75 mg/m(2), both given on day 1. Cycles were repeated every 3 weeks and a total of 4-6 cycles were scheduled to be administered.50 consecutive eligible patients were enrolled into the study. Median follow-up time was 6 months (range 1-21). Median age was 61.5 years (range 39-75). Forty-eight (96%) patients were male. Histological type was squamous cell carcinoma in 21 (42%) patients, adenocarcinoma in 11 (22%) and undifferentiated carcinoma in 18 (36%). The median OS time was 16 months (range 7.1-24.9; 95% CI: 8-24). One-year OS was 56.3%. Overall response rate was 44% with 40% partial (PR) and 4% complete responses (CR). Twenty-eight percent of patients had stable disease (SD) and 28% progressive disease (PD). The median TTP was 4 months (range 2-13; 95% CI: 2.4-5.5).Docetaxel/cisplatin combination demonstrated efficacy comparable to other platinum-containing doublets.
