El trastorno de acumulación se caracteriza por una extrema dificultad para deshacerse o descartar artículos, independientemente de su valor real, originando con ello múltiples síntomas y problemas cotidianos de todo tipo. Aunque la severidad es más marcada en adultos mayores, el cuadro es de instalación progresiva a lo largo de varias décadas. Se presenta el caso de un paciente varón de 49 años, con inicio de la enfermedad desde los 15 años, guardando libros y cuadernos usados con la idea de que podrían ser útiles en el futuro; además de manifestaciones significativas de ansiedad. La acumulación de otros objetos como herramientas, ropa y utensilios de cocina se fue intensificando junto con el incremento de la ansiedad tras varias pérdidas familiares. El paciente buscó atención médica en diferentes centros sin encontrar alivio. Finalmente, el diagnóstico, el tratamiento psicofarmacológico y psicoterapéutico fueron replanteados con resultados favorables.

The objective of this research work was to characterize and identify multipattern clonal grafts with morphological, physicochemical,and health characteristics to obtain good yields and fruit pulp quality in soursop populations. The descriptor list for soursop, recommended by CORPOICA, was used to characterize the fruit and pulp of the clonal plants. For the quantitative and qualitative morphological characterization of the fruit, the statistical software InfoStat was used, and to determine the most outstanding characteristics of the pulp, the software SPSS Ver. 24 was used. The chemical analysis of the pulp was done by means of the non-parametric techniques of Kruskal Wallis. In the qualitative characterization of the pulp, 43.1% showed white and snow-white color, 42.1% had an acid flavor, 57.9% had a medium texture and 44.7% had a medium aroma and 36.8% had a high aroma, 50% proved to be semi juicy. The pH found ranged between 4.70 and 2.92, with respect to the total soluble solids expressed in ºBrix, averaging 17.10. It is concluded that there is genetic variability in qualitative and quantitative characters of the fruit and pulp in grafted clones and differences were found in the chemical analysis of the pulp of clonal plants.

The research presents the inter-comparison of atmospheric variables measured by 9 automatic meteorological stations. This set of data was compared with the measurements of other meteorological stations in order to standardize the values that must be adjusted when taken to different areas. The data of a set of a total of 9 GMX500, which measures conventional meteorological variables, and 10 WS100 sensors, which measures precipitation parameters. The automatic stations were set up at the Huancayo Observatory (Geophysical Institute of Peru) for a period of 5 months. The data set of GMX500 were evaluated comparing with the average of the 9 sensors and the WS100 was compared with a optical disdrometer Parsivel2. The temperature, pressure, relative humidity, wind speed, rainfall rate, and drop size distribution was evaluated. A pair of GMX500 sensors presented high data dispersion, it was found found that the errors came from a bad configuration; once this problem was solved, good agreement was archived, with low RMSE and high correlation. I was found that the WS100 sensors overestimate the precipitation with a percent bias close to 100% and the differences increase with the greater intensity of rain. The DSD retrieved by WS100 have unrealistic behavior with higher concentrations in diameters of 1 mm and 5 mm, in addition to a flattened curve.

The study evaluated the impact of the health education and literacy program (HELP) to community beneficiaries. Findings served as bases for an enhanced annual plan for 2019 to 2020. This descriptive study was conducted in Village Looc and Village Opao, Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines to evaluate the health education and literacy program (HELP) to its beneficiaries which was implemented from June 2018 to May 2019. A total of 85 mothers were surveyed utilizing a researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of a profile section and an evaluation of health topics which were provided as lectures to community residents. The respondents were satisfied with the twelve health education topics taught to them for the entire year. Among the twelve topics, the top six topics with the highest means were prostate cancer, breast cancer, skin diseases, dengue fever, Diabetes Mellitus, and Asthma. Residents were also satisfied with the other six health education topics. These were smoking-related diseases, HIV/AIDS, oral hygiene, Tuberculosis, stress, and conjunctivitis. Although the residents were satisfied, there is still room for improvement.Based on the findings of the study, the residents were satisfied with the health education and literacy program. However, there is a need to re-teach the concepts and institute strategies that will facilitate the residents to reach high satisfaction on the program.Keywords: Satisfaction; Impact; Health Education; Literacy; Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines

The study assessed the health education and literacy needs of residents in two partner communities of a university. The findings served as basis for the creation of the annualcommunity extension plan of the department. This study utilized the descriptive quantitative design. It was conducted in 2 partner communities namely Village Looc and Village Opao, both located in Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines. The survey utilized 90 respondents. A researcher-made instrument was used which listed 20 concepts. Respondents were requested to determine to what extent they need the discussion of the concepts. To interpret the data, simple percentage and weighted mean was used.The study reveals that the residents’ top ten needs are as follows: Prostate Cancer (2.35); Breast cancer (2.28); Smoking-related diseases (2.28); Stress (2.27); Diabetes Mellitus (2.25); Asthma (2.25); Dengue (2.20); Tuberculosis (2.15); HIV/AIDS (2.14); Skin diseases (2.13); and Oral Hygiene (2.13). In this study, hypertension was considered the health topic with the lowest need (1.51).The researchers concluded that there was a moderate need among residents on health education and literacy. The researchers recommended the incorporation of the top ten topics in the annual plan of the college to increase the knowledge of community residents on these health topics.Recommended citation: Amparado, M. This study assessed the knowledge and practices on nutrition of the mothers with malnourished child/children in Jubay, Liloan, Cebu. The level of knowledge on nutrition was based on the go, grow and glow classification, while nutrition practices was on food selection, food preparation, and feeding. It also described the profile of the respondents in terms of family size, educational attainment, monthly income, and employment status. The key findings were the basis for a proposed action plan.The study utilized the descriptive-correlational design and used a researcher-made tool, vignettes and follow-up interviews. There were 120 mothers with malnourished child/children (0-5 years old). The statistical treatment used were simple percentage, weighted mean, and chi-square Test of Independence.The findings showed that the mothers attained high school level education and were employed. Most belonged to a family size with 4-6 household members and a combined monthly income of less than 5,000 Philippine pesos.Majority of the respondents’ level of knowledge on basic food groups was excellent. However, there were challenges on nutrition practices in terms of food selection, preparation, and feeding. There was no significant relationship between the level of knowledge on basic food groups and nutrition practices of the respondents.To overcome nutrition problems in rural areas, nutrition education for mothers should include knowledge and practices that focus on low cost, flavorful, nutritious foods, and ample water supply.Recommended citation: Ocariza, R. Se presenta un caso de micetoma de pie derecho, producido por fusarium solani, en un hombre de 24 años procedente del Chaco. La infección se produjo debido a una lesión con una astilla de quebracho.La determinación del agente causal fue realizada en muestras seriadas (biopsias y secreciones) por el estudio de los gránulos, exámenes directos, coloraciones y caracteres culturales en medio de Agar Sabouraud-glucosa, Agar Sabouraud cloranfenicol, Agar extracto de Malta y Cerebro Corazón.Se considera a fusarium solani y otros especies del género, como raros agentes productores de micetoma, pero las cepas con capacidad de crecer a elevadas temperaturas y las circunstancias apropiadas en hospedador, permiten su adaptación al ambiente tisular y el inicio de esta micosis.

Se ha desarrollado una técnica que induce la producción del complejo enzimático "celulasa" permitiendo el crecimiento de las cepas fúngicas celulolíticas sobre un soporte inerte con un flujo nutritivo unidireccional que simula su situación en el ecosistema edáfico.El complejo enzimático liberado sobre el sustrato fue extraído a través de eluciones diarias, separado y valorado en su actividad sobre carboximetilcelulosa (B-50- I.C.I. Ltd. Cheshire - U.K.) cuantificando los metabolitos reductores originados en la hidrólisis por el método de Somodgy-Nelson.La metodología fue aplicada a trece cepas filamentosas aisladas de suelos agrícolas de la pradera pampeana. El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer la accion ejercida por concentraciones crecientes de herbicidas de presiembra (Metrlbuzin, .Atrazina y Alachlor) sobre el crecimiento y la capacidad germinativa de Microsporum fulvum, Microsporum gypseum y Keratinomyces ajelloi

Se investigo el agente causante de lesiones cronicas en los espacios interdigitales de ambos pies en un paciente ambulatorio tratado largamente con corticoides. El estudio micologico noS condujo a la identificacion de Fusarium solani Se realizaron estudios a nivel de la respuesta inmune humoral y celular . Analizand o estos resultados se encontraron algunas alteraciones en la respuesta inmune.

Para observar los efectos de ciertos agroquímicos sobre la micota quetatinolítica de los suelos, se realizaron aplicaciones de Metribuzin, Atrazina y Alachlor, en las dosis habituales, a parcelas de terreno de suelos de pradera.Se estudiaron las modificaciones que a través del tiempo se producían en los aislamientos de estos hongos geofílicos. Algunas de las cepas fueron inhibidas al comienzo del tratamiento, pero al cabo de los 60 días, todas ellas se recuperaron a partir de los suelos tratados. Se comprobó que estos agroquímicos produjeron cambios en el metabolismo de la especie más aislada: Microsporum fulvum, atribuyéndose estas observaciones a una selección realizada por los herbicidas, de cepas más resistentes a los mismos

Se realizó el aislamiento de cepas queratinolíticas en. suelos de pradera de cuatro sectores lindantes entre sí, destinados a: 1) cultivos alternantes de trigo y soja; 2) potreros con ganado vacuno y caballar; 3) corral de aves y 4) corral de cerdos.De los resultados obtenidos en muestras de potreros y corrales, se aprecia una marcada selección de las especies queratinolíticas, aparentemente condicionadas al tipo de sustrato queratinoso aportado por los distintos animales. En suelos de porquerizas, hay un predominio de Keratinomyces ajelloi, mientras que en los correspondientes a potreros, tiene la mayor frecuencia el complejo Microsporum gypseum y sus teleomorfos. En corral de aves, Arthroderma ciferril y su anamorfo fueron aislados por primera vez en nuestro país.Cabe destacar que en suelos destinados a cultivos, sin el especial aporte queratinoso, todas las muestras presentaron desarrollo de K. ajelloi.

Comunicamos el primer hallazgo en nuestro laboratorio de un micetoma podal producido por Madurella mycetomatis. La identificación de la cepa, se realizó a través de los siguientes caracteres: aspecto de los gránulos, macro y micromorfología en diversos medios de cultivo y capacidad de asimilación de hidratos de carbono. Se probó además la sensibilidad in vitro a distintos antifúngicos.Destacamos el buen resultado terapéutico obtenido con la medicación utilizada

De muestras de suelo correspondiente a sectores ocupados por espacios libres -plazas, parques, baldíos- comprendidos en la zona urbana de la ciudad de Rosario (República Argentina), se aislan cepas de hongos queratinoliticos-fílicos, entre ellos dermatofitos geofílicos, utilizando como anzuelo queratinoso: pelos estériles de caballo y de niño, con y sin tratamiento alcalino. La alcalinización del anzuelo queratinoso, determinó que éste fuera utilizado por un mayor número de colonias con capacidad queratinolítica, no relacionadas a los dermatofitos.La ausencia de grupos SH- libres en el desarrollo in vitro, de Microsporum gypseum y Keratinomyces ajelloi sobre las queratinas hidrolizadas, nos hizo pensar que la degradación de las mismas, se realiza en forma distinta a la estudiada empleando queratinas nativas, o sin hidrolizar, las cuales forman radicales tioles, como catabolitos.Esta variante metabólica, necesaria para la queratinolisis, pudo ser aprovechada por otras cepas que se muestran competitivas con un substrato en esas condiciones.

A partir del enfoque institucional, este trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar que las instituciones relacionadas con la distribución del agua potable que llega a los hogares han provocado incertidumbre en la ciudadanía al no informar sobre su calidad, ocasionando que se haya volcado hacia el agua embotellada en un lapso de treinta años. Muestra cómo a su vez esta falta de información institucional resulta ser un incentivo poderoso --entre otros-- para las trasnacionales, que en pocos años han logrado tener un mercado cautivo de consumidores en México.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different agricultural management practices on the dynamics of cellulolytic fungi populations. The treatments considered were two cropping sequences: (l) corn, wheat-soyabean, soyabean (C-W/S-S) and (2) wheat-soyabean (W/S), and three tillage systems: (1) chisel tillage (ChT); (2) no tillage (NT) and (3) autumn plough-no tillage (AP/NT), all of them evaluated at two depths, 0–5 cm and 5–10 cm. Soil samples were taken after wheat harvest. Crop residues were removed from the soil, and soil and residues were weighed separately. Soil organic matter (SOM), pH and counts of viable cellulolytic fungi (CF) were determined. The CF were isolated by the dilution plate and the washing method and identified. The residue quantity and SOM were higher in the C-W/S-S rotation than in the W/S rotation and higher in NT than in ChT. The pH values were less acid in the C-W/S-S rotation in NT. The Enhanced Border Security and Visa Ent ry Reform Act of 2002 requires that the Visa Waiver Program be available only to countries that have a program to issue to their nationals machine-readab le passports incorporating biometric identifiers complying with applicable standards established by the Internationa l Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). In June 2002, the New Technologies Working Group of ICAO unanimously endorsed the use of face recognition (FR) as the globally interoperable biometric for machine-assisted identity confirmati on with machine-readable travel documents (MRTDs), although Member States may elect to use fingerpri nt and/or iris recognition as additional biometric technologies. The means and formats are still being developed through which biometric information might be stored in the constrained space of integr ated circuit chips embedded within travel documents. Such information will be stored in an open, yet unalterable and very compact format, probably as digitally signed and efficiently compressed images. The objective of this research is to characterize the many factors that affect FR system performance with respect to the legislated mandates concerning FR. A photograph acquisition environment and a commercial face recognition system have been installed at Mitretek, and over 1,40 0 images have been collected of volunteers. The image database and FR system are being used to analyze the effects of lossy image compression, individual differences, such as eyeglasses and facial hair, and the acquisition environment on FR system performance. Images are compressed by varying ratios using JPEG2000 to determine the trade-off poi nts between recogn ition accuracy and compression ratio. The various acquisition factors that contribute to differences in FR system performance among individuals are also being measured. The results of this study will be used to refin e and test efficient face image interchange standards that ensure hi ghly accurate recognition, both for automated FR systems and human inspectors. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) allows for the non-invasive imaging of free radicals in biological systems. Although a number of physical factors have hindered the development of EPR as an imaging modality, EPR offers the potential for tissue oxymetry. EPR images are typically reconstructed using a traditional filtered back-projection technique. We are attempting to improve the quality of EPR images by using maximum-entropy based iterative image reconstruction algorithms. Our investigation has so far focused on two methods, the multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART), and an algorithm that is motivated by interior-point reconstruction. MART is a row-action method that maintains strict equality in the constraints while minimizing the entropy functional. The latter method, which we have named Least-Squares Barrier Entropy (LSBEnt), transforms the constrained problem into an unconstrained problem and maximizes entropy at a prescribed distance from the measured data. EPR studies are frequently characterized by low signal-to-noise ratios and wide line widths. The effect of the backprojection streaking artifact can be quite severe and can seriously compromise a study. We have compared the iterative results with filtered backprojection on two-dimensional (2-D) EPR acquisitions of various phantoms. Encouraging preliminary results have demonstrated that one of the clear advantages of the iterative methods is their lack of streaking artifacts that plague filtered backprojection.

Interactive visualization of multi-dimensional biological images has revolutionized diagnostic and therapy planning. Extracting complementary anatomical and functional information from different imaging modalities provides a synergistic analysis capability for quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the objects under examination. We have been developing NIHmagic, a visualization tool for research and clinical use, on the SGI OnyxII Infinite Reality platform. Images are reconstructed into a 3D volume by volume rendering, a display technique that employs 3D texture mapping to provide a translucent appearance to the object. A stack of slices is rendered into a volume by an opacity mapping function, where the opacity is determined by the intensity of the voxel and its distance from the viewer. NIHmagic incorporates 3D visualization of time-sequenced images, manual registration of 2D slices, segmentation of anatomical structures, and color-coded re-mapping of intensities. Accurate statistical correlation of brain activation in functional magnetic resonance image (MRI) studies depends on the reduction of artifacts induced by patient motion. We have addressed this problem in two ways. First, we have eliminated gross movement by the development of an immobilization mask. Second, we have implemented the image registration procedure, mutual information. This registration procedure is used to correct remaining misalignments due to patient motion. We have chosen maximization of mutual information because it is applicable to a broad range of image registration problems because it requires no segmentation, feature extraction, a priori information, or operator-assisted extractions. Initial results, as applied to fMRI data, are also presented. Our results indicate that we have reduced the motion artifacts present in our original data sets with sub-voxel accuracy.

We have retrospectively examined 94 evaluable patients with metastatic osteolysis from breast cancer (BC) and non-small cell lung (NSCLC) cancer, who received RT from Nov. 88 to Nov. 89.27 (15 BC and 12 NSCLC) were in treatment with Clodronate for at least 3 days from the beginning of RT; of the remaining 67 treated with RT alone, 31 had NSCLC and 36 BC. We have evaluated: increase in pain (IP) occurring on the first days of RT, percentages of complete pain relief (CPR) at the end of RT and 4-6 weeks after. A decreased occurrence of IP was observed more in NSCLC patients receiving RT + Clodronate compared to those treated with RT alone (33.3% vs 41.9%). Both at the end of RT and 4-6 weeks after, we registered a significant difference in the percentages of CPR in the RT + Clodronate group (40.7 vs 20.9 and 70.3% vs 53.7%). We believe the points of interest focused in this paper-greater precision in centering and defining the target volume, decreased occurrence of IP during the first days of RT, increase in percentage of CPR--need a prospective confirmation.

Carcinomatous involvement of the pelvic nerves (Pelvic Carcinomatous Neuropathy-PCN-) causes disabling sensorial and motor disturbances of the lower extremities. Recurrent rectal carcinomas are the most common cause of PCN because surgical obliteration of the perirectal fascia. In 31 cases of PCN Authors describe the types of the neoplasm and the sites of involvement of the pelvic nerves evaluating clinical syndromes and Computed Tomography. The results of radiotherapy (doses between 36-56 Gy) in 14 cases of PCN by recurrent rectal cancer are also reported. Although the survival of such patients is poor, radiotherapy has obtained a good palliative result in 50% of them. Personalization of radiation treatment planning is advisable in order to avoid acute side-effects.
