Structural racism is a significant contributor to the disparities in obesity, poverty, and food insecurity rates in African Americans compared to the rest of the U.S. population. Federally-funded nutrition education programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) provide education which may help African Americans better navigate their food environments. Programs like SNAP-Ed may also be able to address barriers imposed by structural racism through policy, systems, and environmental change interventions. Public health researchers have acknowledged the role structural racism plays in African Americans’ health outcomes, and nutrition educators have acknowledged that factors other than knowledge affect food choice. However, there remains a lack of systematic or scoping reviews which connect the two by examining either nutrition interventions (nutrition education or changes to food and/or nutrition policy, food systems, and/or the food environment) conducted to address structural racism or African Americans’ experiences in nutrition interventions. This review will therefore be the first to identify and map the available literature related to nutrition interventions for African Americans (including nutrition education and changes to food and/or nutrition policy, food systems, and/or the food environment) which address structural racism and African Americans’ experiences in nutrition interventions. The results of this review will provide a starting point from which researchers may begin to re-evaluate the role federally-funded nutrition education programs play in addressing structural racism faced by African Americans.

In 2020, the Healthy Helping Fruit and Vegetable Program provided SNAP-eligible beneficiaries with $40/month, for up to 3 months, to purchase fruits and vegetables at a chain supermarket in North Carolina. A survey to describe participants’ experiences with the program and interviews to explore whether these experiences were shaped by participating in other pandemic-related food access programs were conducted. In conjunction with other food access programs, programs that allow participants freedom to choose what they purchase may alleviate household hardships and provide greater access to nutrient-dense foods during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
