The storage and conversion of energy necessitates the use of appropriate electrochemical systems and chemical reaction catalysts. This work presents newly developed catalysts for electrooxidation of ethanol in an alkaline medium. Nanocatalysts composed of Co–Ni nanowires (Co–Ni NWs) decorated with Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were made at varying metal ratios and their chemical composition and structure was investigated in detail. The synthesis involved a wet chemical reduction assisted by a magnetic field, which led to the generation of NWs, followed by the deposition of spherical Pd NPs on their surface. The best catalytic activity was obtained for the catalyst made of Co3–Ni7 decorated with Pd NPs, which exhibited EOR of 8003 mA/mgPd for only 0.86 wt% of Pd loading. The results can be explained by the synergistic effect between the morphology of the bimetallic support and the favorable interaction of oxophilic Co, Ni with catalytic Pd.

As emissões antropogênicas de metano, são o segundo maior contribuinte para o aquecimento global atualmente. Desse modo, este estudo viabiliza a aplicação do metano como matéria prima para sua conversão em metanol, produtos parcialmente oxidados e cogeração de energia em um reator de eletrólito polimérico - tipo célula a combustível sobre catalisadores binários Pdx-My/C (M = Ni e Cu). Os catalisadores foram sintetizados com sucesso via NaBH4 e caracterizados por DRX, onde foi confirmada a estrutura cúbica de face centrada (CFC) para todos os materiais e formação das espécies como NiO e Ni(OH)2 para composições de PdxNiy e Cu2O e CuO para PdxCuy. Imagens de MET mostraram que as nanopartículas metálicas estão bem dispersas no suporte com pequenas regiões de aglomeração associadas a óxidos de Ni e Cu em concordância com o DRX. Os experimentos de RRDE confirmaram uma boa produção de H2O2 para os catalisadores, indicando a presença de intermediários como OH- resultantes do processo de ativação da água. As espécies observadas no DMS para Pdx-My/C (M = Ni e Cu) em diferentes composições foram metanol, dióxido de carbono e formiato de potássio com a adição de outros intermediários como: traços de éter dimétilico e formiato de metila. O mesmo também foi observado para PdxCuy, ou seja, estes também confirmados pelo FTIR, que adicionalmente apresentou carbonato, um possível produto da oxidação total do metano em meio alcalino. Os materiais mais promissores em quantificação de metanol foram: Pd/C, Pd90Ni10/C, Pd50Cu50/C e Pd90Cu10/C, no qual este comportamento poderia estar associado à formação de uma fina camada de PdO na superfície catalítica de Pd; e a reação de dissociação da água auxiliada por sítios óxofílicos característicos de espécies de óxidos de Ni e Cu. Anthropogenic methane emissions are the second largest contributor to global warming nowadays. Thus, this study enables the application of methane as a raw material for its conversion into methanol, partially oxidized products and energy cogeneration in a polymeric electrolyte reactor - fuel cell type on binary catalysts Pdx-My/C (M = Ni and Cu). The catalysts were successfully synthesized via NaBH4 and characterized by XRD, where the face centered cubic structure (FCC) was confirmed for all materials and the formation of species such as NiO and Ni(OH)2 for PdxNiy and Cu2O and CuO for PdxCuy bimetallics. TEM images showed that the metallic nanoparticles are well dispersed in the support with small agglomeration regions associated with Ni and Cu oxides in agreement with XRD. The RRDE experiments confirmed a good production of H2O2 for the catalysts, indicating the presence of intermediates such as OH- resulting from the water activation process. The species observed in the DMS for Pdx-My/C (M = Ni and Cu) in different compositions were methanol, carbon dioxide and potassium formate with the addition of other intermediates such as: traces of dimethyl ether and methyl formate for PdxCuy. The same was also observed for PdxCuy, that is, these were also confirmed by the FTIR, which additionally presented carbonate, a possible product of the total oxidation of methane in an alkaline medium. The most promising materials in methanol quantification were: Pd/C, Pd90Ni10/C, Pd50Cu50/C and Pd90Cu10/C, in which this behavior is probably associated with the formation of a thin layer of PdO on the catalytic surface of Pd; and the water dissociation reaction aided by oxophilic sites characteristic of Ni and Cu oxide species.

Ethanol is considered an alternative fuel to power fuel cells, especially due to its ease of transport and storage and renewable production on a large scale. However, its use in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) is still limited by incomplete electro-oxidation and slow reaction kinetics. Modeling approaches have focused on investigating different reaction mechanisms, but so far, no formal analysis of model parameter sensitivity has been conducted. This work modeled and identified sensitive parameters for different types of Pt–Sn catalysts previously prepared by our research group that displayed good performance in the 5–15 mW/cm2 range (relative to a performance of 12 mW/cm2 achieved by a commercial ETEK catalyst). Analyses to study the effect of these parameters on coverage fraction distribution, reaction rates and possible correlations were also performed. The model was developed based on Butler–Volmer kinetics and on a reaction mechanism previously reported in the literature. Statistical developments were considered to compute parameter uncertainties for a non-linear system with non-linear restrictions. The model achieved very good fits to experimental data, with low RMSE values between 0.22 × 10−4 and 4.2 × 10−4 A/cm2, while also showing surface coverage fraction distributions in agreement with other experiment-based works from the literature. All catalysts taken into account, the most sensitive parameters were the reaction rate constants associated with the formation of adsorbed CH3CO, and the direct and reverse water dissociative adsorption reactions, respectively. Additional analyses suggested that there is not much correlation between the parameters. The results from this work could contribute to the state-of-the-art DEFC models by providing insights into which variables may be assumed constant or which ones have the greatest impact on the model output, thus helping to reduce the model size and computational time for future broader DEFC models.

A síntese dos eletrocatalisadores Pt/C e PtRh/C (20% em massa de metais) foi realizada pelo método da redução por álcool desenvolvido no IPEN-CNEN/SP. A caracterização por EDX apontou que as composições atômicas dos eletrocatalisadores ficaram bem próximas às nominais. O DRX permitiu observar uma possível formação de liga para os materiais binários e também estimar o tamanho médio de cristalito para os catalisadores sem direcionamento, o qual foi de aproximadamente 3 nm. Realizou-se ainda uma observação sobre os domínios de superfície dos eletrocatalisadores, mostrando que os materiais com orientação preferencial apresentaram domínios de superfície Pt(100) mais intensos que os demais. Imagens de MET mostraram que a maioria das nanopartículas de Pt e PtRh sintetizadas com crescimento preferencial na direção (100) possuem morfologia cúbica com tamanhos médios entre 8 e 9 nm. Pelo stripping de CO notou-se que a eletro-oxidação de uma monocamada de CO ocorre em menores potenciais para os catalisadores com orientação preferencial. Experimentos em célula unitária mostraram que os eletrocatalisadores bimetálicos PtRh/C (com ou sem orientação) apresentaram melhor desempenho para as reações propostas (EOR e GOR) e ainda que os materiais com orientação preferencial na direção (100) são bem mais ativos quando consideramos sua área eletroquimicamente ativa. Experimentos de DMS e medições de ATR - FTIR revelaram, para EOR, que os eletrocatalisadores com orientação preferencial na direção (100) levam à formação de produtos mais oxidados. Para GOR os resultados de DMS e ATR - FTIR mostraram que, assim como os eletrocatalisadores binários PtRh, os eletrocatalisadores com orientação preferencial não produziram todos os compostos investigados. The synthesis of Pt/C and PtRh/C electrocatalysts (20% in mass of metals) was performed by the alcohol reduction method developed at IPEN-CNEN/SP. The characterization by EDX indicated that the atomic compositions of the electrocatalysts were very close to the nominal ones. The XRD allowed us to observe a possible alloy formation for the binary materials and also to estimate the average crystallite size for the undirected catalysts, which was approximately 3 nm. An observation on the surface domains of the electrocatalysts was also performed, showing that the materials with preferential orientation presented more intense Pt(100) surface domains than the others. MET images showed that most of the Pt and PtRh nanoparticles synthesized with preferential growth in the (100) direction have cubic morphology with average sizes between 8 and 9 nm. By CO stripping it was noted that electro-oxidation of a CO monolayer occurs at lower potentials for the catalysts with preferential orientation. Unit cell experiments showed that the PtRh/C bimetallic electrocatalysts (with or without orientation) showed better performance for the proposed reactions (EOR and GOR) and also that the materials with preferential orientation in the (100) direction are much more active when considering their electrochemically active area. DMS experiments and ATR - FTIR measurements revealed, for EOR, that electrocatalysts with preferential orientation in the (100) direction lead to the formation of more oxidized products. For GOR the, DMS and ATR - FTIR results, as well as for the binary electrocatalysts PtRh, showed that the electrocatalysts with preferential orientation did not produce all the investigated compounds.

However, the platinum-tin binary system presents distinct phases depending on the amount of Sn (i.e., the Pt:Sn ratio) and on the thermal annealing temperatures, as well as the presence of oxides (e.g. SnO2) whose influence on the performance of DEFCs is not well understood. In this work, Pt–Sn catalysts presenting distinct Pt:Sn ratios were prepared, characterized and tested in a single DEFC. The combined results from DEFC tests and structural characterization techniques showed that increasing the amount of Sn dissolved into the Pt structure enhances DEFC performance but also that Sn content alone does not explain the overall behavior. Microstructural effects on the DEFC response was further investigated by performing a comprehensive study using high intensity X-ray Diffraction and in situ–X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy provided by synchrotron light on Pt3Sn1/C samples subjected to thermal treatments in a reducing H2 atmosphere at temperatures of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 °C. The results showed that best DEFC performance depends on a balance between the amount of Sn dissolved in Pt, the formation of a new phase (PtSn) and also on the presence of tin oxides, yielding a material with an optimized modified 5d-band electronic structure, which was obtained with a thermal treatment at 200 °C. A poluição ambiental e os altos custos associados ao uso de combustíveis fósseis têm motivado o desenvolvimento de fontes de energias alternativas. Neste sentido, as células a combustível são uma alternativa promissora, por possibilitar o uso de combustíveis de fontes renováveis, como o etanol, que possui um sistema produtivo bastante desenvolvido no Brasil. Entretanto, na reação incompleta de oxidação do etanol há formação de espécies intermediárias e subprodutos, que ficam adsorvidos na superfície do eletrocatalisador, causando sua desativação e consequente redução da eficiência energética do sistema; um fator limitante do processo, que pode ser minimizado com a adição de metais, como o bismuto à platina e ao paládio. Para tanto, os eletrocatalisadores PtBi/C (95:5), PdBi/C (95:5) e PtPdBi/C (90:5:5), foram sintetizados via redução por borohidreto de sódio. A atividade eletrocatalítica foi analisada via voltametria cíclica e cronoamperometria em meio alcalino em três concentrações diferentes de etanol (0,5; 1,0 e 2,0 mol.L-1) e testes em célula unitária de etanol direto. Os eletrocatalisadores exibiram um tamanho médio de partícula entre 5 a 8 nm, e os espectros de XPS apontaram que a presença de bismuto não causou mudança significativa nos valores de energia de ligação, o que sugere que não houve formação de compostos intermetálicos, em concordância com os dados obtidos de DRX, os quais, não apontaram a formação de ligas, apenas a presença de picos característicos dos metais Pt e Pd. Os resultados de ATR-FTIR mostram que a adição de Bi suprime a produção de carbonato e aumenta o rendimento de acetato independente da concentração de etanol, indicando a ocorrência preferencial da oxidação parcial do etanol. Quanto ao desempenho eletrocatalítico, os melhores resultados em densidade de corrente foram obtidos com o PtBi/C (95:5), que foi cerca de quatro vezes superior à Pt/C, portanto, os resultados sugerem que a associação do bismuto com a platina é extremamente benéfica e sua alta atividade eletrocatalítica pode ser atribuída a sinergia entre seus constituintes, considerando o mecanismo bifuncional. Environmental pollution and the high costs associated with the use of fossil fuels have motivated the development of alternative energy sources. In this sense, fuel cells are a promising alternative, as they enable the use of fuels from renewable sources, such as ethanol, which has a well-developed production system in Brazil. However, in the incomplete reaction of ethanol oxidation there is formation of intermediate species and by-products, which are adsorbed on the surface of the electrocatalyst causing its deactivation and consequent reduction of energy efficiency of the system, a limiting factor which can be minimized by the addition of metals such as bismuth to platinum and palladium. Therefore, the electrocatalysts PtBi/C (95:5), PdBi/C (95:5) e PtPdBi/C (90:5:5), were synthesized through reduction by sodium borohydride process. The electrocatalytic activity was analyzed through cyclic voltametry and chronoamperometry in alkaline medium with three different concentrations of ethanol (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mol.L-1) and direct ethanol unit cell tests. The electrocatalysts showed an average particle size between 5 and 8 nm, and the XPS spectra showed that the presence of bismuth did not cause a significant change in the binding energy values, which suggests that there was no formation of intermetallic compounds, in agreement with the data obtained from XRD, which did not indicate the formation of alloys, only the presence of peaks characteristic of the metals Pt and Pd. The results of ATR-FTIR show that the addition of Bi suppresses carbonate production and increases acetate yield independent of ethanol concentration, indicating the preferential occurrence of partial oxidation of ethanol. As for the electrocatalytic performance, the best results in current density were obtained with PtBi/C (95:5), which was about four times higher than Pt/C. Therefore, the results suggest that the association of bismuth with platinum is extremely beneficial and its high electrocatalytic activity can be attributed to the synergy between its constituents, considering the bifunctional mechanism.

Nos últimos anos, as células a combustível de membrana de troca protônica em alta temperatura (HT-PEMFC) foram objetos de diversas pesquisas a fim de remover muitos desafios levantados durante a operação em baixa temperatura. O estado-da-arte em eletrólitos para PEMFC, Nafion®, apresenta mecanismos de condução de prótons altamente dependentes de água, o que limita a operação nesses sistemas em 100ºC. O aumento da temperatura de operação de uma célula PEMFC é desejado devido à contribuição da temperatura na aceleração das reações eletroquímicas. Contudo, o aumento da temperatura exige uma nova proposta para eletrólitos, seja por otimização das propriedades do Nafion ou por desenvolvimento de membranas que não dependam de água para a condução protônica. Neste contexto, as membranas de PBI (polibenzimidazol) dopadas com ácido fosfórico têm sido consideradas uma alternativa bastante promissora para eletrólitos sólidos operantes em alta temperatura, devido à combinação de condução de prótons satisfatória em condições de baixa umidade relativa e excelente estabilidade térmica. No entanto, membranas baseadas em PBI apresentam algumas desvantagens como perda do ácido que pode ocorrer por meio de uma série de mecanismos, incluindo evaporação, difusão, transporte capilar ou lixiviação por água condensada. Mesmo assim, a tecnologia HT-PEMFC é mais interessante, pois, ela trabalha acima da temperatura de ebulição da água, portanto a água gerada está representada apenas na fase de vapor, dessa forma, modelos monofásicos são mais simples de estudar computacionalmente. Dessa forma, foram estudados dois modelos de formato de placas: serpentina com múltiplos canais e interdigital, com área geométrica de eletrodo de 5 cm2 através de simulações computacionais no software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a, sendo desenvolvidos e validados com a intenção de auxiliar na interpretação de resultados experimentais. Com isso, o presente trabalho priorizou estudos experimentais e computacionais quanto ao comportamento do ácido fosfórico na membrana, difusão reversa de vapor d\'água e distribuição de temperatura através da membrana, fluxo dos gases, carga de catalizadores, alteração do substrato, tipos de combustíveis e mudanças no posicionamento de entrada e saída dos canais de fluxo dos gases. Em geral as curvas de polarização apresentadas, mostraram uma boa concordância entre os resultados experimentais e computacionais. Foi demonstrado que uma quantidade considerável de vapor d\'água pode atravessar o MEA no sentido do cátodo para o ânodo. Em geral, o aumento da estequiometria favoreceu o aumento do desempenho da célula e foi constatado que a fração molar de ácido fosfórico diminui com o aumento da temperatura e da umidade relativa. In recent years, high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC) have been the subject of several researches in order to remove many challenges raised during low temperature operation. The state-of-the-art electrolyte for PEMFC, Nafion®, features highly water-dependent proton conduction mechanisms, which limits operation in these systems to 100ºC. The increase in operating temperature of a PEMFC cell is desired due to the contribution of temperature to the acceleration of electrochemical reactions. However, the increase in temperature requires a new proposal for electrolytes, either by optimizing the properties of Nafion or by developing membranes that do not depend on water for proton conduction. In this context, phosphoric acid-doped PBI (polybenzimidazole) membranes have been considered a very promising alternative for solid electrolytes operating at high temperature, due to the combination of satisfactory proton conduction under conditions of low relative humidity and excellent thermal stability. However, PBI-based membranes have some disadvantages such as acid loss that can occur through a series of mechanisms, including evaporation, diffusion, capillary transport or leaching by condensed water. Even so, the HT-PEMFC technology is more interesting because it works above the boiling temperature of water, so the water generated is represented only in the vapour phase, thus, single-phase models are simpler to study computationally. Thus, two plate format models were studied: serpentine with multiple channels and interdigital, with a geometric electrode area of 5 cm2 through computer simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a software, being developed and validated with the intention of helping in the interpretation of experimental results. Thus, the present work prioritized experimental and computational studies on the behavior of phosphoric acid in the membrane, back diffusion of water vapor and temperature distribution in the membrane, gas flow, catalyst charge, change substrate, fuel types, and changes in inlet and outlet placement of gas flow channels. In general, the presented polarization curves showed a good agreement between the experimental and computational results. It has been shown that a considerable amount of water vapour can cross through the MEA from the cathode to the anode. In general, the increase in stoichiometry favored the increase in cell performance and it was found that the molar fraction of phosphoric acid decreases with increasing temperature and relative humidity.

A maioria das células a combustível de membrana de troca protônica (PEMFC) utiliza o Nafion® como eletrólito. Como possui um mecanismo de condução de prótons dependente de moléculas de água, estas células têm uma temperatura de operação limitada até 80°C. O aumento da temperatura de operação de uma célula PEMFC é desejado devido à contribuição da temperatura na aceleração das reações eletroquímicas, que são processos termoativados. Neste contexto, as membranas PBI (polibenzimidazol) dopadas com ácido fosfórico têm sido consideradas um polímero base bastante promissor para eletrólitos sólidos operantes em alta temperatura, devido à combinação de condução de prótons satisfatória em condições de baixa umidade relativa e excelente estabilidade térmica. No entanto, membranas baseadas em PBI apresentam algumas desvantagens, tais como lixiviação do ácido (veículo condutor), diminuição de sua resistência mecânica, permeabilidade aos combustíveis utilizados em PEMFC operante em alta temperatura (HT-PEMFC), permitindo que uma parte migre do ânodo para o cátodo da célula (crossover) e diminuindo assim a eficiência e o desempenho global do dispositivo. Neste contexto, o objetivo do trabalho foi o desenvolvimento e otimização de membranas compósitas a base de PBI e óxido de silício (SiO2), que além de atuar como reforço mecânico, pode contribuir na mitigação do crossover e, dessa forma, se apresentar como uma alternativa ao Nafion como eletrólito sólido em células a combustível de etanol direto de alta temperatura (HT-DEFC). Nesse sentido, membranas puras de PBI e compósitos PBI-SiO2 com diferentes frações de SiO2 (2,5%, 5%, e 10%) foram sintetizadas e caracterizadas por Raman, termogravimetria, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica. Por fim, as membranas foram avaliadas em protótipos de HT-DEFC a 180°C após parametrização e otimização dos componentes dos conjuntos eletrodos-membranas (MEA). Ainda, eletrocatalisadores anódicos baseados em Pt/C, PtSn/C e PtRu/C foram estudados com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito da natureza do catalisador no desempenho de HT-DEFCs. Most proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) use Nafion® as an electrolyte. As its proton conduction mechanism depends on water molecules, these cells have a limited operating temperature up to 80°C. The increase in the PEMFC operating temperature is desired due to the contribution of temperature in the acceleration of electrochemical reactions, which are thermoactivated processes. In this context, PBI (polybenzimidazole) membranes doped with phosphoric acid have been considered a very promising base polymer for solid electrolytes operating at high temperature, due to the combination of satisfactory proton conduction in conditions of low relative humidity and excellent thermal stability. However, PBI-based membranes have some disadvantages, such as acid leaching (ionic conductor), decreased mechanical resistance, and high permeability to some fuels used in high temperature operating PEMFC (HT-PEMFC), allowing part to migrate from the anode to the cell cathode (crossover) and thus decreasing the overall efficiency and performance of the device. In this context, the objective of the work was the development and optimization of composite membranes based on PBI and silicon oxide (SiO2), which can contribute to the mechanical properties and mitigation of the crossover and, thus, present itself as an alternative solid-state electrolyte to state-of-the-art Nafion at high temperature direct ethanol fuel cells (HT-DEFC). In this sense, pure PBI membranes and PBI-SiO2 composites with different SiO2 fractions (2.5%, 5%, and 10%) were synthesized and characterized by Raman, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Finally, the membranes were evaluated in prototypes of HT-DEFC at 180°C after parameterization and optimization of the components of the electrode-membrane assemblies (MEA). In addition, anodic electrocatalysts based on Pt/C, PtSn/C and PtRu/C were studied in order to evaluate the effect of the nature of the catalyst on the performance of HT-DEFCs.

The understanding of electrocatalytic activity and poisoning resistance properties of Pt and Pd nanoparticles, recognized as the best electrocatalysts for the ethanol oxidation reaction, is an essential step for the commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs). In this paper, mono and bimetallic Pt and Pd nanoparticles with different atomic ratios have been synthesized to study their electrocatalytic properties for an ethanol oxidation reaction in alkaline solutions. The different nanoparticles were physiochemically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical characterization was performed by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements. The electrochemical measurements indicate that Pt nanoparticles have much higher electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation than Pd nanoparticles. The studies with bimetallic PtPd nanoparticles showed a significant impact of their composition on the ethanol oxidation. Thus, the highest electrocatalytic activity and poisoning resistance properties were obtained for Pt3Pd2 nanoparticles. Moreover, this study demonstrates that the poisoning of the catalyst surface through ethanol oxidation is related to the prevalence of the acetaldehyde–acetate route and the polymerization of acetaldehyde through aldol condensation in the alkaline media. O aumento na atividade catalítica da oxidação do etanol trará benefícios na performance de Células a Combustível Direta a Álcool, mas para que isso ocorra, a clivagem da ligação C-C associada aos processos de desidrogenação do etanol se faze necessário. Existe ainda uma lacuna no desenvolvimento de eletrocatalisadores que possuem essa habilidade, no entanto, as nanopartículas do tipo core-shell são fortes candidatas a promover novas propriedades eletrônicas que facilitam essa clivagem. A técnica de Espectroscopia Raman permitiu observar efeitos físicos característicos de nanopartículas de Au@Pd, e, juntamente com a DFT possibilitou identificar ligações híbridas Pd-C para Pd/C. A técnica de DRX permitiu observar a presença da estrutura cristalina dos eletrocatalisadores, no entanto, não foi possível observar variações nos parâmetros de rede. As técnicas TEM e STEM possibilitaram identifcar dispersões e deposições das nanopartículas metálicas sobre o suporte de carbono. As técnicas de STEM, Nano-ESD e core level XPS reveleram a presença da estrutura core-shell Au@Pd suportada em Carbono e que posteriormente foi comprovada por um método desenvolvido nesta tese. Além disso, as técnicas core level XPS e Nano-EDS revelaram respectivamente uma espessura do shell de 2,74 nm e 2,56 nm o que corresponde a uma espessura de 12 ML. Já a técnica de core level XPS para Au@Pd/C, revelou também uma homogeneidade na distribuição da composição ao longo da superfície, enquanto que diferentes estados de oxidação do Au não foram observados. Já a composição atômica ao longo da superfície do eletrocatalisador Pd/C variou em cerca de 30% relativo ao próprio material. A técnica de depth profiling XPS permitiu obter informações sobre a composição e os estados de oxidação ex situ em função da profundidade dos eletrodos, enquanto que a técnica de XPS de banda de valência permitiu obter informações experimentais da densidade de estados dos eletrocatalisadores e compará-los com as densidades de estados obtidos por DFT. Os resultados eletroquímicos foram promissores para o eletrocatalisador Au@Pd/C devido à elevada produção de dióxido de carbono. A produção de dióxido de carbono foi favorecida nos ânodos à base de Au e Pd devido a estabilidade da espécie CO, menor ativação para a clivagem da ligação C-C e menor Δ Greação (via DFT). Os resultados de DFT e VBXPS foram contrários ao previsto pela Teoria do centro da banda-d, no entanto, foram condizentes com o modelo de Anderson-Newns-Grimley. Além disso, o modelo ANG (englobando a descritor εμ) descreveu corretamente a interação metal - metal e metal - adsorbatos. Por Fim, o mecanismo de oxidação do etanol em meio alcalino foi incompleto, paralelo e com uma predominância de espécies C1 para os eletrocatalisadores Au@Pd/C. The increase in the catalytic activity of the ethanol oxidation will bring benefits in the performance of Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells, however, the C-C bond cleavage associated with the ethanol dehydrogenation products processes is necessary. There is still a gap in the development of electrocatalysts that have this ability, however, core-shell nanoparticles are strong candidates for promoting new electronic properties that facilitate this cleavage. Through Raman Spectroscopy were possible to identify the SERS hot spots for Au@Pd/C and the Pd-C hybrid bonds for Pd/C. XRD analysis revealed the crystalline structure of the electrocatalysts; however, it was not possible to observe lattice strains or the Pd crystalline strucuture in Au@Pd/C. TEM and STEM showed good deposition and dispersion of metal nanoparticles over the carbon support. STEM, Nano-EDS, and core-level XPS revealed the core-shell structure of Au@Pd/C, which was further proven by a method developed in this thesis. Furthermore, core level XPS and Nano-EDS showed a Pd shell thickness of 2.74nm and 2.56nm, which corresponds to 12 ML. Moreover, the core level XPS for Au@Pd/C also showed a good distribution regarding the atomic composition over the surface, but no Au oxidation states were observed. The atomic composition for Pd/C on the surface has shown a variation of 30% regarding its electrocatalyst. The ex-situ XPS Depth Profiling analysis showed the atomic compositions for the anodes. The Valence Band XPS showed the experimental density of states regarding the electrocatalysts, which was also compared with the theoretical density of states obtained by DFT. The electrochemical results were promising for Au@Pd/C because of its ability to produce high carbon dioxide rates from ethanol molecules; which was due to the CO stability over Au@Pd/C, the lesser activation energy for C-C bond cleavage, and the lowest Δ Greaction (by DFT). The results obtained by DFT and VBXPS were contrary to those predicted by the d-band center theory; however, they were befitting with the Anderson-Newns-Grimley model. Furthermore, the ANG model (including the εμ descriptor) correctly described the metal-metal and metal-adsorbates interaction. Finally, the ethanol oxidation mechanism in alkaline medium was incomplete, parallel, with C1 species production predominancy for Au@Pd/C.

Eletrocatalisadores de PtRh/C-ITO foram preparados em uma única etapa, usando H2PtCl6.6H2O e RhCl3.xH2O como fonte dos metais, borohidreto de sódio como agente redutor e uma mistura física de 85% de carbono Vulcan XC-72 e 15% In2O3.SnO2 (indium tin oxide - ITO) como suporte. PtRh/C-ITO preparados neste trabalho foram caracterizados por difração de raios X (DRX), microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET), espectroscopia de fotoelétrons excitados por raios X (XPS), espectroscopia in situ de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (ATR-FTIR), voltametria cíclica, cronoamperometria e testes de performance em uma célula a combustível de etanol direto (DEFC). Espectros de difração de raios X para todos eletrocatalisadores de PtRh/C-ITO indicaram um deslocamento nos picos da Pt(fcc), mostrando que o Rh foi incorporado na matriz da Pt. Histogramas obtidos pelas imagens do MET para PtRh/C-ITO mostraram nanopartículas, com tamanho entre 3,0 e 4,0 nm, homogeneamente distribuídas sobre o suporte. Resultados do XPS da PtRh(70:30)/C-ITO mostraram a presença de uma mistura de espécies de diferentes estados de oxidação (Sn0 e SnO2), o que pode favorecer a oxidação de espécies intermediarias adsorvidas, através do mecanismo bifuncional. PtRh(90:10)/C-ITO foi a mais ativa nos estudos eletroquímicos devido a maior produção de CO2, indicando possuir maior seletividade na quebra da ligação C-C. Experimentos em DEFC mostraram que os valores de densidades de potência obtidas com PtRh(70:30)/C-ITO e PtRh(90:10)/C-ITO foram maiores do que com o Pt/C, indicando um efeito benéfico na adição de Rh a Pt, além do ITO no suporte de carbono. PtRh/C-ITO electrocatalysts were prepared in a single step process, using H2PtCl6.6H2O and RhCl3.xH2O as metal sources, sodium borohydride as a reducing agent, and a solid mixture of 85% Vulcan XC-72 and In2O3.SnO2 (indium tin oxide - ITO) as support. The prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infra-Red (ATR-FTIR), cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and performance test on direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). X-ray diffraction patterns for all PtRh/C-ITO indicated a shift in Pt(fcc) peaks, showing that Rh was incorporated into Pt lattice. Transmission electron microscopy for PtRh/C-ITO showed nanoparticles homogeneously distributed over the support with particles size between 3.0 nm and 4.0 nm. The XPS results for PtRh(70:30)/C-ITO showed the presence of mixed oxidation states of Sn0 and SnO2, which could favor the oxidation of intermediates adsorbed by bifunctional mechanism. PtRh/C-ITO (90:10) was more active in electrochemical studies considering the higher quantities of CO2 produced, which indicates a greater selectivity of this electrocatalyst to break C-C bonds. Experiments in direct alkaline ethanol fuel cells showed that power density values obtained for PtRh/C-ITO (70:30) and PtRh/C-ITO (90:10) were higher than obtained for Pt/C, indicating a beneficial effect of Rh addition to Pt and the C-ITO support.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on conventional nickel-yttria stabilised zirconia (Ni-YSZ) anodes can not be fed directly with organic fuels because of the associated formation of carbon deposits. This work explores a simple approach to solve such relevant limiting factor that affects the direct utilization of conventional dry hydrocarbons in SOFCs. The approach consists in depositing a composite multifunctional electrocatalyst layer on the SOFC anode to work as an internal integrated fuel processor. This study investigates the direct oxidation of dry ethanol in the modified SOFC and provides an evaluation of cell performance. A protective layer based on a composite made of Ni-modified perovskite and gadolinia-doped ceria is coated on a conventional SOFC anode based on Ni-YSZ. Besides the oxygen storage properties of ceria, the composite electrocatalyst is characterized by the presence of dispersed Ni-alloy @ FeOx core-shell nanoparticles in the outer layers and surface basicity properties. Efficient dehydrogenation of ethanol, carbon deposition-free cracking reactions and internal reforming assisted by a H-2/H2O "shuttle mechanism" appear as the key steps involved in the direct oxidation of the organic fuel at the modified SOFC anode. The best performance achieved for the dry ethanol-fed SOFC is about 0.65 W cm(-2) at 0.6V and 800 degrees C. No carbon deposition is observed both on the Ni-YSZ supporting layer and protective Ni-doped perovskite layer after a durability test of more than 100 h. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In recent decades, significant efforts have been focused on the direct electrochemical oxidation of alcohol and hydrocarbon fuels. Organic liquid fuels are characterized by high energy density and the electromotive force associated with their electrochemical combustion to CO2 is comparable to that of hydrogen combustion to water. Among the liquid organic fuels, methanol and ethanol have promising characteristics in terms of reactivity at low temperatures, storage and handling. Compared with ethanol, methanol has the significant advantage of faster reaction kinetics and higher selectivity to CO2 formation for the electrochemical oxidation process. Highly dispersed carbon-supported bimetallic PtRu and PtSn alloy catalysts are widely recognized among the most performing anode formulations for these processes. Alloying Pt with Ru and Sn promotes oxidation of methanol and ethanol by the adsorption of OH species at considerably lower overpotentials and, thus, favoring the occurrence of a bifunctional mechanism. Furthermore, the electronic effect caused by a second metal on the neighboring Pt atoms affects the strength of CO adsorption on the catalyst surface. This causes a decrease of the coverage of poisoning CO intermediate species. Catalysts characterized by a high degree of alloying and metallic behavior on the surface appear to be very active towards methanol oxidation. However, beside the alloyed catalysts, noble metal oxides (IrOx, RuOx) and valve metal oxides (SnOx, TiOx and VOx) can be suitable promoters for methanol and ethanol oxidation in acidic environment. An effective use of such oxide promoters in combination with the alloy catalysts can provide a multifunctional catalytic system. Recent studies carried out in our laboratory have shown that IrOx can give rise to a significant promoting effect, even larger than that of RuOx, both in the case of methanol and ethanol oxidation. Whereas, the electrocatalytic enhancement produced by the valve metal oxides is generally lower than IrOx and RuOx but well evident. These results are interpreted in terms of the different water displacement mechanisms for the various oxides and the related effects on adsorbed CO removal. The effect of temperature is also discussed with reference to the coverage of adsorbed methanolic residues or change in selectivity in the case of ethanol electro-oxidation. For the ethanol oxidation process, anode catalyst selectivity towards CO2, acetic acid and acetaldehyde reaction products is discussed in relation to the alloy and oxide content in the catalyst. In particular, SnOx species on the surface of Sn-rich Pt-Sn-based electrocatalyst appear to assist the further oxidation of ethanolic adsorbates, leading to larger yields of acetic acid and CO2. In addition to the enhancement of reaction rates, there is an effect of the promoter on the stability of the bimetallic alloy as evidenced by accelerated stress tests. All these evidences seem to indicate that a multifunctional catalyst may represent a valid route to enhance performance and reliability of methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation processes at low temperature.

Local changes of the interfacial pH can significantly affect the rate and mechanism during the course of an electrodic reaction. For instance, different pH values will have a significant effect on the equilibrium properties of both solution and surface species, altering the reactions kinetics. Ethanol oxidation at platinum electrodes in alkaline media involves the fast consumption of OH− species that will change the local pH at the electrode surface, decreasing the reaction rate. In this study, the local pH change during ethanol oxidation in alkaline media is accomplished by using rotating ring-disc electrode (RRDE) experiments. The current at the ring when polarized at the onset of hydrogen evolution serves as a measure of the local pH in the vicinity of the electrode. The results show that the current at the ring at 0.1 V (vs. RHE) becomes more negative during ethanol oxidation, owing to a change in the equilibrium potential of the hydrogen evolution reaction caused by a change in the local pH. The demand for power sources alternative to fossil fuels makes urgent the development of more efficient electrocatalysts for fuel cells applications and the maximization of the performances of the existent ones. This work reports, for the first time, the use of carbon-supported shape-controlled Pt nanoparticles as anode catalysts in direct ethanol fuel cells. By using cubic Pt nanoparticles, on which (100) surface sites are predominant, the performance of the fuel cell can be increased from 14 to 24 mW per mg of Pt when compared with cuboctahedral nanoparticles. Moreover, the open circuit potential shifts about 50 mV toward more positive potentials. In comparison with commercially available Pt catalysts, the performance for the (100) preferentially oriented nanoparticles is about three times higher. The reported results evidence that, from an applied point of view, the effect of the surface structure/shape of the electrocatalysts can be also considered to improve the performance of real fuel cell systems. In this paper, a catalyst of hollow PdCu alloy nanocubes supported on nitrogen-doped graphene support (H-PdCu/ppy-NG) is successfully synthesized using a simple one-pot template-free method. Two other catalyst materials such as solid PdCu alloy particles supported on this same nitrogen-doped graphene support (PdCu/ppy-NG) and hollow PdCu alloy nanocubes supported on the reduced graphene oxide support (H-PdCu/RGO) are also prepared using the similar synthesis conditions for comparison. It is found that, among these three catalyst materials, H-PdCu/ppy-NG gives the highest electrochemical active area and both the most uniformity and dispersibility of H-PdCu particles. Electrochemical tests show that the H-PdCu/ppy-NG catalyst can give the best electrocatalytic activity and stability towards the ethanol electrooxidation when compared to other two catalysts. Therefore, H-PdCu/ppy-NG should be a promising catalyst candidate for anodic ethanol oxidation in direct ethanol fuel cells.

The performance decay of a solid polymer electrolyte direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) based on a Pt3Sn1/C anode catalyst during an endurance test has been investigated. The effect of different cell shut-down procedures on the cycled behaviour of the DEFC has been studied. To get specific insights into the degradation mechanism, polarization and ac-impedance spectroscopy studies have been carried out. These analyses have been complemented by post-operation transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. The combination of these techniques has allowed to get information on recoverable and unrecoverable losses. This provides a basis for further improvement of DEFC components. A Ni nanowire array (NiNWA) supported three-dimensional flower-like Pd nano-electrocatalyst with high electrocatalytic performance for the electrooxidation of ethanol in alkaline media has been fabricated by borohydride hydrothermal reduction method. This novel hybrid NiNWA/PdNF (nanoflowers) electrocatalyst exhibits large electrochemically active surface area (EASA, 45 m 2 g −1 (Pd)), excellent electrocatalytic activity (765 mA mg −1 (Pd)), and high level of the poisoning tolerance ( I f /I b = 1.2) to the carbonaceous oxidative intermediates for the electrooxidation reaction in alkaline media. In addition, the electrochemical stability of NiNWA/PdNF is significantly higher than that of NiNWA/PdNP (nanoparticles) electrocatalyst, as evidenced by chronoamperometry experiments in which the electrooxidation current of nanoflowers is controlled by the diffusion transport of ethanol species rather than the carbonaceous poisoning. This high electrocatalytic activity can be attributed to the more open structure with higher electrochemically active sites and shape of Pd nanoflowers. This is further enhanced by the core support NiNWA with a very large surface area and the open interspaces that ensure easy alcohol access even to remote active sites for fast ion adsorption/desorption.

A parametric study was conducted on the performance of direct ethanol fuel cells. The membrane electrode assemblies employed were composed of a Nafion ® 117 membrane, a Pt/C cathode and a PtRu/C anode. The effect of cathode backpressure, cell temperature, ethanol solution flow rate, ethanol concentration, and oxygen flow rate were evaluated by measuring the cell voltage as a function of current density for each set of conditions. The effect of the anode diffusion media was also studied. It was found that the cell performance was enhanced by increasing the cell temperature and the cathode backpressure. On the contrary, the cell performance was virtually independent of oxygen and fuel solution flow rates. Performance variations were encountered only at very low flow rates. The effect of the ethanol concentration on the performance was as expected, mass transport loses observed at low concentrations and kinetic loses at high ethanol concentration due to fuel crossover. The open circuit voltage appeared to be independent of most operating parameters and was only significantly affected by the ethanol concentration. It was also established that the anode diffusion media had an important effect on the cell performance.

A cobalt-polymer-MWCNT composite has been developed as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in PEMFC. The suitability of this electrocatalyst for the ORR in direct methanol fuel cells and direct ethanol fuel cells has been examined by taking Pt-Ru/MWCNT and Pt-Sn/MWCNT, respectively as an anode electrocatalysts. The study results in improved power densities for hydrogen, methanol and ethanol based fuel cells compared to the previously reported non Pt based electrocatalysts, highlighting the use of this cobalt-polymer-MWCNT composite as a potential candidate for ORR in fuel cells. � 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Os eletrocatalisadores PtRh (50:50)/85% C + 15% CeO2, PtRh (90:10)/ 85% C + 15% CeO2, PtSn (50:50)/ 85% C + 15% CeO2 e PtSnRh/85% C + 15% CeO2 Todos os eletrocatalisadores foram caracterizados físico-quimicamente pelas técnicas de difração de raios X (DRX) e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Por meio das análises de DRX foi observada a presença a estrutura cúbica de face centrada típica de platina e suas ligas, além de uma fase de SnO, em diferentes composições atômicas, foram preparados pelo método da redução por álcool para serem testados nos estudos de oxidação eletroquímica de etanol. 2 para os eletrocatalisadores de PtSn/85% C + 15% CeO2 e PtSnRh/85% C + 15% CeO2. A MET permitiu a observação de uma distribuição relativamente homogênea das partículas, cujos tamanhos médios variaram de 2,5 a 3 nm, no suporte de C + CeO2 As caracterizações eletroquímicas foram realizadas por meio das técnicas de voltametria cíclica (VC) e cronoamperometria (CA). As medições foram feitas à temperatura ambiente e à 50°C, e a técnica de preparo do eletrodo de trabalho foi a de camada fina porosa. . O eletrocatalisador PtSnRh (50:45:5)/ 85% C + 15% CeO2 Na síntese do eletrocatalisador de PtSnRh (50:45:5)/ 85% C + 15% CeO apresentou o melhor desempenho para a oxidação do etanol de acordo com as técnicas eletroquímicas utilizadas, bem como pelos estudos em condições reais de operação em células a combustível alimentadas diretamente por etanol. 2 Estudos com a técnica de infravermelho confirmaram que a oxidação do etanol ocorreu de forma incompleta para os eletrocatalisadores ternários de PtSnRh (50:45:5)/ 85% C + 15% CeOa ordem de adição dos metais foi feita de duas maneiras distintas. O estanho adicionado numa primeira etapa seguida pela adição de PtRh mostrou ser a forma que resultou em maior atividade para a oxidação do etanol. 2 e PtSnRh (50:45:5)/C. PtRh (50:50)/ 85% C + 15% CeO2, PtRh (90:10)/ 85% C + 15% CeO2, PtSn (50:50)/ 85% C + 15% CeO2 and PtSnRh/85% C + 15% CeO2 All catalysts were characterized by the physical chemical techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By means of XRD it could be observed the presence of the face-centered cubic structure, which is typical of platinum and its alloys. As well, it was noticed a phase of SnOelectrocatalysts were prepared, with different atomic compositions, by the reduction by alcohol method in order to be tested in the ethanol electrochemical oxidation studies. 2 for the diffractograms of PtSn/85% C + 15% CeO2 and PtSnRh/85% C + 15% CeO2 electrocatalysts. TEM allowed the observation of a relatively homogeneous distribution of particles whose average size ranged from 2.5 to 3 nm in C + CeO2 The electrochemical characterizations were carried out by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) both at room temperature and 50°C. Thin porous coating technique was used for all ethanol electrochemical oxidation studies. Em uma primeira etapa, os catalisadores eletroquímicos de Pt/C, Pt/C+ATO, Pd/C, Pd/C+ATO, PtPd/C+ATO e PtPdSn/C+ATO, onde foram usadas diferentes razões molares de Pt e Pd, e de Pt, Pd e Sn, respectivamente, foram preparados pelo método de redução por borohidreto de sódio para serem testados na oxidação do etanol. H2PtCl6.6H2O, Pd(NO3)2.2H2O e SnCl2.2H2O foram utilizados como fontes de metais, que corresponderam a 20% em massa do catalisador. A mistura física de 85% de carbono Vulcan XC72 e 15% de Sb2O5.SnO2 (ATO) foi utilizada como suporte. Os catalisadores foram caracterizados por meio da difração de raios X, microscopia de transmissão, voltametria cíclica, cronoamperometria, teste em célula unitária de etanol direto e espectroscopia de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier in situ (ATR-FTIR). Os difratogramas de raios X de Pt/C e Pd/C mostraram quatro picos associados com a estrutura cúbica de face centrada (cfc) da platina e do paládio, respectivamente. Já para os catalisadores de Pt, Pd, PtPd e PtPdSn, suportados em carbono e ATO puderam ser visualizados, além dos picos referentes à Pt e ao Pd, outros oito picos associados com a cassiterita e/ou com os óxidos de estanho dopado com antimônio (ATO). A microscopia de transmissão mostrou que todos os catalisadores apresentam suas partículas metálicas homogeneamente distribuídas no suporte e seus tamanhos variaram de 2 a 6 nm. Os estudos eletroquímicos de voltametria e cronoamperometria em meio de H2SO4 indicaram que os catalisadores terciários de PtPdSn(80:10:10)/C+ATO e PtPdSn(90:5:5)/C+ATO, e o binário de PtPd(80:20)/C+ATO apresentaram, nesta ordem, as maiores densidades de corrente para a oxidação eletroquímica do etanol, em relação a Pt/C, no intervalo de potenciais de interesse de 0,05 a 0,9 V vs. ERH. Os experimentos em uma célula a combustível de etanol direto à 100°C mostraram desempenhos de densidade de potência semelhantes para os dois catalisadores terciários e, aproximadamente 6 vezes mais altos que o obtido para Pt/C. Os espectros de FTIR obtidos durante a oxidação eletroquímica do etanol na presença de HClO4 0,1 M mostrou as principais bandas em 2344, 1282 e 933 cm-3, as quais estão associadas à presença de CO2, ácido acético e acetaldeído, respectivamente. Para os catalisadores de Pt/C, PtPd(80:20)/C+ATO e PtPdSn(90:5:5)/C+ATO, o acetaldeído foi o principal produto no intervalo de potenciais estudado, conforme é indicado pelo gráfico das intensidades integradas de bandas; enquanto que para Pt/C+ATO e PtPdSn(80:10:10)/C+ATO, o ácido acétido foi o principal produto. Em uma segunda etapa, os catalisadores de PdPt(80:20)/C+ATO, PdPtSn(80:10:10)/C+ATO e PdPtSn(90:5:5)/C+ATO foram preparados para serem testados eletroquimicamente, por meio de voltametria cíclica e cronoamperometria, em meio alcalino. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que novamente os catalisadores terciários apresentaram as maiores atividades catalíticas no intervalo de -0,850 V a -0,450 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Isso confirmou que o Pd é um excelente catalisador para oxidação do etanol em meio alcalino, pois o valor de corrente em meio alcalino foi cerca de sessenta vezes maior que o valor obtido em meio ácido. Esses resultados sugerem excelentes perspectivas para o uso de catalisadores de Pd para a oxidação de etanol em células alcalinas. Firstly, Pt/C, Pt/C+ATO, Pd/C, Pd/C+ATO, PtPd/C+ATO and PtPdSn/C+ATO electrocatalysts were prepared by the reduction by sodium borohydride method. H2PtCl6.6H2O, Pd(NO3)2.2H2O and SnCl2.2H2O were used as metal source and a physical mixture of 85% Vulcan Carbon XC72 and 15% Sb2O5.SnO2, so-called ATO, as support. The catalysts were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) experiments, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and tests in direct ethanol fuel cells for ethanol oxidation. XRD analysis of Pt/C and Pd/C showed four peaks associated with the face-centered cubic (fcc) structure of Pt and Pd, respectively. On the other hand, carbon plus ATO supported Pt and Pd based catalysts showed besides the presence of four fcc Pt and Pd reflections others eight peaks associated with antimony-doped tin oxides (ATO). TEM images and the corresponding metal particle size distribution histogram of the catalysts revealed the metallic particles are highly dispersed on the support and their average size ranges were from 2 to 6 nm. The electrochemical measurements characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) in N2 saturated 0,5 M H2SO4 solutions at room temperatures showed the PtPdSn(80:10:10)/C+ATO and PtPdSn(90:5:5)/C+ATO tri-mettallic catalysts, and the PtPd(80:20)/C+ATO bi-mettallic catalyst presented, in that order, the highest peak current densities with 1 M ethanol, in comparision with Pt/C, in the potential region of 0.05 to 0.9 V vs. RHE. The experiments at 100oC on single direct ethanol fuel cells showed that the power density values for both tri-mettallic catalysts were very similar and at about 6 times higher than that value of Pt/C. The FTIR spectra collected during ethanol electro-oxidation in presence of 0.1 M HClO4 showed the main bands at 2344, 1282 and 933 cm-3, which are characteristic of the presence of CO2, acetic acid and acetaldehyde, respectively. For Pt/C, PtPd(80:20)/C+ATO and PtPdSn(90:5:5)/C+ATO electrocatalysts acetaldehyde was the main product in the potential region observed, as it is shown in the graph of integrated band intensity as a function of the electrode potential. In the case of Pt/C+ATO and PtPdSn(80:10:10)/C+ATO catalysts acetic acid was the main product. At second, PdPt(80:20)/C+ATO, PdPtSn(80:10:10)/C+ATO e PdPtSn(90:5:5)/C+ATO were prepared to be tested by means of CV and CA in alkaline medium. The results obtained again indicated that the tri-mettallic catalysts showed the highest peak current densities in the potential region of -0,850 V to -0,450 V vs. Ag/AgCl. This confirms that Pd-based catalysts are an excellent option for ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium since the current values in alkaline medium were approximately sixty times higher than those ones obtained in acidic medium.

As células a combustível do tipo PEM (Próton Exchange Membrane) alimentadas diretamente por hidrogênio são consideradas as mais promissoras para a geração de energia elétrica, entretanto o uso de hidrogênio como combustível nestas células apresenta ainda alguns inconvenientes operacionais e de infra-estrutura, o que dificulta o seu uso. Assim, nos últimos anos, uma célula a combustível que utiliza um álcool diretamente como combustível (DAFC - Direct Alcohol Fuel Cell) tem despertado bastante interesse, particularmente aquelas que são alimentadas pelos combustíveis metanol ou etanol, pois apresentam várias vantagens, como por exemplo, a não necessidade de estocar hidrogênio ou gerá-lo através da reforma de hidrocarbonetos.Porém, células que utilizam diretamente metanol como combustível, apresentam correntes relativamente baixas e a oxidação completa do etanol é dificultado pela quebra da ligação CC e também há a formação de intermediários fortemente adsorvidos no eletrocatalisador de platina, como o monóxido de carbono (COads), resultando em baixos potenciais operacionais na célula.Para minimizar o efeito causado pelos venenos catalíticos faz-se necessária a adição de outros metais na composição do eletrodo de Pt. Tais metais devem atuar na reação fornecendo sítios para a adsorção de espécies que contenham oxigênio (OH ou H2O), em potenciais inferiores ao potencial de adsorção de OH na Pt.Este trabalho apresenta estudos da reação de eletro-oxidação destes álcoois, nos meios ácido e alcalino, sobre os eletrocatalisadores Pt/C, PtAu/C e PtAuBi/C, utilizando o método da redução via feixe de elétrons. Os eletrocatalisadores PtAuBi/C foram preparados com diferentes composições atômicas a fim de se avaliar o efeito da adição de bismuto. Os experimentos foram caracterizados por voltametria cíclica e cronoamperometria, utilizando a técnica do eletrodo de camada fina porosa, obtendo informações em relação às atividades dos catalisadores, perfis eletroquímicos e suas estabilidades em relação ao tempo de operação. Os eletrodepósitos foram examinados usando análise de energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) a fim de determinar a composição de fases, o tamanho e a distribuição das nanopartículas metálicas no suporte. Os resultados eletroquímicos mostraram para oxidação eletroquímica de metanol, no meio alcalino, que o catalisador de PtAu/C apresentou melhor atividade eletrocatalítica e, no meio ácido, o catalisador Pt/C foi mais efetivo com relação às demais formulações preparadas e os eletrocatalisadores PtAuBi/C apresentaram-se pouco efetivos. No caso da oxidação do etanol, os dados eletroquímicos mostraram que, no meio ácido os catalisadores PtAu e Pt/C possuem comportamentos similares e os catalisadores PtAuBi/C demonstram baixa atividade. No meio alcalino, o sistema PtAuBi/C obteve melhor desempenho em relação aos demais catalisadores, obtendo maiores valores de correntes à baixos potenciais. Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell powered directly by hydrogen are considered the most promising for the generation of electricity, however the use of hydrogen as fuel in these cells also presents some drawbacks and operational infrastructure, which hinders its use. Thus, in recent years, a fuel cell which uses an alcohol directly as a fuel (DAFC - Direct Alcohol Fuel Cell) has attracted considerable interest, particularly those that are powered by fuels methanol or ethanol, they present several advantages, such as not need to store hydrogen or generate it through reform of hydrocarbons. However, cells that use methanol directly as fuel, have relatively low current and complete oxidation of ethanol is hampered by the cleavage of C-C and there is also the formation of intermediate strongly adsorbed on the platinum electrocatalyst, such as carbon monoxide (COads), resulting in low operational potential in cell. To reduce the effect caused by the \"poisons\" catalyst is needed the addition of other metals in the composition of Pt electrode. Such, metals should act on the reaction providing sites for adsorption of species containing oxygen (OH or H2O) in potential below for adsorption of OH in Pt.In this work studies the reaction of electro-oxidation of this alcohols in acid medium and alkaline on the electrocatalysts Pt / C, PtAu / C and PtAuBi / C, using the method of reduction electron beam. The electrocatalysts PtAuBi / C were prepared with different compositions to evaluate the effect of addition of bismuth. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electro-oxidation of methanol and ethanol were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry at room temperature. The results showed for electrochemical oxidation of methanol in alkaline medium, the catalyst PtAu / C showed better electrocatalytic activity and, in the acidic medium, the catalyst Pt / C was more effective in relation to other formulations prepared and electrocatalysts PtAuBi / C were ineffective. In ethanol oxidation, the results showed that, in acidic medium, catalysts PtAu and Pt / C have similar behaviors and catalysts PtAuBi / C show low activity. In alkaline medium, the system PtAuBi / C performed better than the other catalysts, obtaining higher values of current at low potentials.

A high-surface-area PtSn electrocatalyst supported on carbon was prepared by using a formic acid reduction method. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the electrocatalyst were investigated by using polarization measurements, cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic durability tests, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. An endurance test of 220 h at 0.4 V with recirculation of ethanol was carried out. Under continuous operation in a direct ethanol fuel cell, the electrocatalytic system shows an initial decay, but suitable stability is observed after about 100 h.

Células a combustível de óxido sólido suportadas no eletrólito de zircônia estabilizada com ítria (YSZ) foram fabricadas usando a técnica do recobrimento por rotação (spin-coating) para deposição de catodos de manganita de lantânio dopada com estrôncio (LSM) e anodos compósitos de níquel e YSZ (Ni-YSZ). Parâmetros microestruturais dos eletrodos, tais como espessura, tamanho médio de partículas e temperatura de sinterização foram otimizados, visando reduzir a resistência de polarização da célula e melhorar o seu desempenho. Estes estudos serviram de base para a fabricação de células com camada catalítica para uso com etanol direto. Sobre o anodo Ni-YSZ da célula foi depositada uma camada catalítica de céria dopada com gadolínia (CGO) com 0,1% em peso de irídio (Ir-CGO). A camada catalítica visa reformar o etanol antes do seu contato com o anodo Ni-YSZ, evitando o depósito de carbono na superfície do Ni que inviabiliza o uso de combustíveis primários contendo carbono nestas células a combustível. Inicialmente, a célula a combustível foi testada com etanol e as melhores condições de operação foram determinadas. Em seguida, as células unitárias foram testadas com etanol sem adição de água por períodos de tempo de até 390 horas. As células a combustível a etanol direto com camada catalítica operam no modo de reforma interna gradual, apresentando boa estabilidade e densidades de corrente similares às obtidas na operação com hidrogênio. Após a operação das células a combustível a etanol direto, análises de microscopia eletrônica de varredura mostraram que não houve formação significativa de depósitos de carbono na superfície do Ni, indicando que a camada catalítica de Ir-CGO foi efetiva para operação com o etanol. Testes de células a combustível a etanol direto sem a camada catalítica revelaram uma rápida degradação nas horas iniciais de operação com formação de grandes quantidades de depósitos de carbono identificados visualmente. Considerando-se a operação estável com etanol a seco por tempos relativamente longos de operação, os resultados alcançados representam um avanço significativo e apontam para o desenvolvimento de células a combustível a etanol direto usando-se os componentes tradicionais com a adição de uma camada catalítica. Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte supported solid oxide fuel cells were fabricated with spin-coated strontium-doped lanthanum manganite (LSM) cathodes and Ni-YSZ cermet anodes. The microstructural parameters of the electrodes such as thickness, average particle size, and sintering temperature were optimized to decrease the polarization resistance of the single cells and to improve their electrochemical performance. These preliminar studies provided the basis for the fabrication of single fuel cells with a catalytic layer of gadolinia-doped ceria (CGO) and 0.1 wt% iridium (Ir-CGO) deposited onto the anode. The catalytic layer aims at the stable operation with dry (direct) ethanol; it avoids the contact of the alcohol with the anode, preventing the anode degradation by carbon deposition. Initially, the single cells were tested with ethanol and optimized operating parameters were determined. Then, the single cells were operated with anhydrous ethanol for periods of time up to 390 hours. The single cells with catalytic layer operate by the gradual internal reforming of ethanol, with good stability and delivering similar electric current densities as the ones measured using hydrogen as fuel. After single cell operation on direct ethanol, scanning electron microscopy analyses identified no significant carbon deposition on the surface of Ni, indicating that the Ir-CGO catalytic layer was effective for the reforming of ethanol. Such results were compared to the ones of standard single cells operating on dry ethanol, which showed a fast degradation and the formation of large amounts of carbon deposits. Considering the rather stable performance of single cells running on dry ethanol for relatively long times, such results represent a significant advance towards the development of direct ethanol solid oxide fuel cells using the standard components and a catalytic layer.

Three Pt-based anode catalysts supported on Vulcan XC-72R (VC) were prepared by using a modified polyol process. These materials were characterized and tested by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM analysis indicated that especially the ternary anode catalysts consisted of uniform nanosized particles with sharp distribution. The Pt lattice parameter was smaller, in the ternary PtSnIr catalyst whereas it increased with the addition of Sn and Rh, in the corresponding binary and ternary catalysts. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements showed that Sn, Ir and Rh may act as promoter of Pt enhancing ethanol electro-oxidation activity. It was found that the direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) performances were significantly improved with these modified anode catalysts. This effect on the DEFC performance is attributed to the so-called bi-tri-functional mechanism and to the electronic interaction between Pt and additives. The performance increased significantly with the temperature. However, it was also possible to observe some decay with time for all catalysts due to the formation of surface poisons, probably consisting in CO-like species.
