Abstract

International audience; Background: Speech disorders are amongst the first symptoms to appear in Parkinson's disease (PD). Objectives: We aimed to characterize PD voice signature from the prodromal stage (isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, iRBD) to early PD using an automated acoustic analysis and compare male and female patients. We carried out supervised learning classifications to automatically detect patients using voice only. Methods: Speech samples were acquired in 256 French speakers (117 participants with early PD, 41 with iRBD, and 98 healthy controls), with a professional quality microphone, a computer microphone and their own telephone. High-level features related to prosody, phonation, speech fluency and rhythm abilities were extracted. Group analyses were performed to determine the most discriminant features, as well as the impact of sex, vocal tasks, and microphone type. These speech features were used as inputs of a support vector machine and were combined with classifiers using low-level features. Results: PD related impairments were found in prosody, pause durations and rhythmic abilities, from the prodromal stage. These alterations were more pronounced in men than in women. Early PD detection was achieved with a balanced accuracy of 89% in males and 70% in females. Participants with iRBD were detected with a balanced accuracy of 63% (reaching 70% in the subgroup with mild motor symptoms). Conclusion: This study provides new insight in the characterization of sex-dependent early PD speech impairments, and demonstrates the valuable benefit of including automated voice analysis in future diagnostic procedures of prodromal PD.

Abstract

We review our work on integrated lasers for optical communications. An InP-based multilayer stack containing Al-based quantum wells with optical gain in the telecom window is bonded onto a silicon-on-insulator wafer with patterned photonic circuits and cavities. Ring-based widely tunable lasers and narrow linewidth DFB lasers are demonstrated.

To increase the system reliability, several biometric devices are often used. Such a combined system is known as a multimodal biometric system. This paper reports a benchmarking study carried out within the framework of the BioSecure DS2 (Access Control) evaluation campaign organized by the University of Surrey, involving face, fingerprint, and iris biometrics for person authentication, targeting the application of physical access control in a medium-size establishment with some 500 persons. While multimodal biometrics is a well-investigated subject in the literature, there exists no benchmark for a fusion algorithm comparison. Working towards this goal, we designed two sets of experiments: quality-dependent and cost-sensitive evaluation. The quality-dependent evaluation aims at assessing how well fusion algorithms can perform under changing quality of raw biometric images principally due to change of devices. The cost-sensitive evaluation, on the other hand, investigates how well a fusion algorithm can perform given restricted computation and in the presence of software and hardware failures, resulting in errors such as failure-to-acquire and failure-to-match. Since multiple capturing devices are available, a fusion algorithm should be able to handle this nonideal but nevertheless realistic scenario. In both evaluations, each fusion algorithm is provided with scores from each biometric comparison subsystem as well as the quality measures of both the template and the query data. The response to the call of the evaluation campaign proved very encouraging, with the submission of 22 fusion systems. To the best of our knowledge, this campaign is the first attempt to benchmark quality-based multimodal fusion algorithms. In the presence of changing - - image quality which may be due to a change of acquisition devices and/or device capturing configurations, we observe that the top performing fusion algorithms are those that exploit automatically derived quality measurements. Our evaluation also suggests that while using all the available biometric sensors can definitely increase the fusion performance, this comes at the expense of increased cost in terms of acquisition time, computation time, the physical cost of hardware, and its maintenance cost. As demonstrated in our experiments, a promising solution which minimizes the composite cost is sequential fusion, where a fusion algorithm sequentially uses match scores until a desired confidence is reached, or until all the match scores are exhausted, before outputting the final combined score., This evaluation was made possible thanks to the EU funding from the following projects: BioSecure (www.biosecure.info) and Mobio (www.mobioproject.org). Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the design and performance of a single-ended transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for gigabit passive optical networks (GPON) implementing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation format. The circuit is realized using an industrial GaAs integrated technology. Low power consumption and small chip area are the main challenges in the TIA design. On-wafer characterization in terms of S-parameters, noise figure, gain compression and intermodulation are presented and compared to simulated results showing a good agreement. The TIA is linked with a broadband PIN photodiode and introduced in a radio over fiber (RoF) system. The optical link is simulated in a microwave software and characterized in terms of error vector magnitude (EVM) by varying the radio frequency (RF) input power and the laser bias current.

Abstract

International audience; We address the problem of measuring the dependency of multibiometric systems' scores, using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Mutual Information criteria, and studying the validity of performance evaluation on chimeric persons. On the NIST-BSSR1 database, we formalize a common assumption in the literature: for independent scores, multibiometric systems can be evaluated on "random chimeric" persons. We show that this is not valid for dependent scores and propose a novel protocol for building "cluster-based chimeric" persons maintaining the level of dependency between scores. Finally, we show that performance evaluation for dependent modalities on such persons is equivalent to that obtained on "real" persons.

Abstract

International audience; This work is a novel attempt to provide local communications for multiple optical private networks (PNs) within ring-based passive optical network (PON). In order to improve network throughput performance, PNs traffic is decentralized from PON traffic let no extra traffic management into optical line terminal (OLT). To achieve multiple secure optical private networking over ring-based PON layout, optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) technique is applied. This technique leads to interconnect optical network units (ONUs) in the same PN sharing the same codeword while other PNs benefiting from different codewords. This scheme can be used in access networks to establish discrete communications between different sites in an enterprise or a university campus or even a residential accommodation. The proposed network architecture is then set up and its bit error rate performance is experimentally demonstrated. Finally, the network scalability and throughput performance of the proposed scheme are analyzed

Abstract

This paper address the development of a new technic in the sleep analysis domain. Sleep is defined as a periodic physiological state during which vigilance is suspended and reactivity to external stimulations diminished. We sleep on average between six and nine hours per night and our sleep is composed of four to six cycles of about 90-minutes each. Each of these cycles is composed of a succession of several stages of sleep, more or less deep. The analysis of sleep is usually done using a polysomnography. This examination consists of recording, among other things, electrical cerebral activity by electroencephalography (EEG), ocular movements by electrooculography (EOG) and chin muscle tone by electromyography (EMG). The recording is done mostly in a hospital, more specifically in a service for monitoring the pathologies related to sleep. The readings are then interpreted manually by an expert to generate a hypnogram, a curve showing the succession of sleep stages during the night in 30-second epochs. The proposed method is based on the follow-up of the thermal signature that makes it possible to classify the activity into three classes: "awakening", "calm sleep" and "agitated sleep". The contribution of this non-invasive method is part of the screening of sleep disorders, to be validated by a more complete analysis of the sleep. The measure provided by this new system, based on temperature monitoring (patient and ambient), aims to be integrated into the tele-medicine platform developed within the framework of the Smart-EEG project by the SYEL - SYstèmes ELectroniques team. Analysis of the data collected during the first surveys carried out with this method showed a correlation between thermal signature and activity during sleep. The advantage of this method lies in its simplicity and the possibility of carrying out measurements of activity during sleep and without direct contact with the patient at home or hospitals.

Abstract

International audience; The approach described here attempts to overcome foot-mounted limitations, contrary to a majority of current implementations of inertial navigation systems (INS). The aim of our development is to maintain repeatable performance, especially without step counting, while carefully dealing with the mobility requirements and the computation cost. The inertial measurement unit (IMU) is belt mounted to facilitate the equipment of the user. The pedestrian trajectory is computed in real time. The resulting position is transmitted and displayed to the user on a smartphone where no specific application is installed. The description of our indoor experiments reveals the potential of this approach, in terms of positioning performance, with more than 75% of our experiments when the relative start-end error remains below 5% of the total traveled distance.

Abstract

The exponential traffic growth in optical networks has triggered the evolution from fixed-grid to flex-grid technology. This evolution allows better spectral efficiency and spectrum usage over current optical networks in order to facilitate huge dynamic traffic demands. The promise of flex-grid technology in terms of increasing the number of optical channels established over optical links, however, may not be sustainable because of the associated increase in optical amplification power. In this work, we detail a power control process that takes advantage of link optical power and channel optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) margins to allow network operators to support this optical power increase while maintaining the use of legacy optical amplifiers. New generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) protocol extensions are proposed on which to integrate the optical power control process in the control plane. The performance of the process is evaluated in terms of the blocking ratio and network throughput over fixed-grid and flex-grid networks. Results show that controlling optical power benefits from the flex-grid technology in terms of spectrum and capacity gain and reduces optical connection blocking.

Abstract

International audience; The principles underlying the organization and operation of the prefrontal cortex have been addressed by neural network modeling. The involvement of the prefrontal cortex in the temporal organization of behavior can be defined by processing units that switch between two stable states of activity (bistable behavior) in response to synaptic inputs. Long-term representation of programs requiring short-term memory can result from activity-dependent modifications of the synaptic transmission controlling the bistable behavior. After learning, the sustained activity of a given neuron represents the selective memorization of a past event, the selective anticipation of a future event, and the predictability of reinforcement. A simulated neural network illustrates the abilities of the model (1) to learn, via a natural step-by-step training protocol, the paradigmatic task (delayed response) used for testing prefrontal neurons in primates, (2) to display the same categories of neuronal activities, and (3) to predict how they change during learning. In agreement with experimental data, two main types of activity contribute to the adaptive properties of the network. The first is transient activity time-locked to events of the task and its profile remains constant during successive training stages. The second is sustained activity that undergoes nonmonotonic changes with changes in reward contingency that occur during the transition between stages.

Abstract

We propose a new view on yield stress materials. Dense suspensions and many other materials have a yield stress—they flow only if a large enough shear stress is exerted on them. There has been an ongoing debate in the literature on whether true yield stress fluids exist, and even whether the concept is useful. This is mainly due to the experimental difficulties in determining the yield stress. We show that most if not all of these difficulties disappear when a clear distinction is made between two types of yield stress fluids: thixotropic and simple ones. For the former, adequate experimental protocols need to be employed that take into account the time evolution of these materials: ageing and shear rejuvenation. This solves the problem of experimental determination of the yield stress. Also, we show that true yield stress materials indeed exist, and in addition, we account for shear banding that is generically observed in yield stress fluids.

International audience; We analyze teletraffic capacity performance of a WDM/DS-OCDMA Passive Optical Network. Hybrid WDM/DS-OCDMA PON is proposed to increase user capacity performance and to be a cost effective method per wavelength of a WDM PON. For each prime code used in this system, an appropriate simultaneous capacity threshold has been evaluated in a manner to ensure good transmission performance (BER~10− 9). Since this capacity threshold is inferior to the nominal resource capacity of the considered code, a soft blocking of the system has been determined even if resources in the system are still available. The teletraffic capacity of the WDM/DS-OCDMA system has been then analyzed under the maximum of soft blocking probability constraint for different prime codes. This value is dependent on the probability of channel activity factor. It is demonstrated that using extended quadratic congruent codes (EQC) with better correlation properties, causes the teletraffic capacity to be closer to the nominal teletraffic capacity.

Abstract

Pattern formation from drying droplets containing sedimenting particles and dewetting of thin films of such suspensions was studied. The dewetting causes the formation of finger-like patterns near the contact line which leave behind a deposit of branches. We find that the strikingly low speed of dewetting is due to the high particle concentration in the contact line region, leading to a strongly enhanced viscosity. For pattern formation from drying droplets (containing particles), evaporation also causes dewetting. In both cases, we find a similar relationship between the size of the patterns and the dewetting speed. The coefficient of this relationship gives us the effective viscosity at the contact line. We present a simple model that accounts for this, and that shows that the size of the particles is the relevant length scale in both problems.

Abstract

International audience; The IRIM group is a consortium of French teams work- ing on Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval. This paper describes its participation to the TRECVID 2012 se- mantic indexing and instance search tasks. For the semantic indexing task, our approach uses a six-stages processing pipelines for computing scores for the likeli- hood of a video shot to contain a target concept. These scores are then used for producing a ranked list of im- ages or shots that are the most likely to contain the tar- get concept. The pipeline is composed of the following steps: descriptor extraction, descriptor optimization, classi cation, fusion of descriptor variants, higher-level fusion, and re-ranking. We evaluated a number of dif- ferent descriptors and tried di erent fusion strategies. The best IRIM run has a Mean Inferred Average Pre- cision of 0.2378, which ranked us 4th out of 16 partici- pants. For the instance search task, our approach uses two steps. First individual methods of participants are used to compute similrity between an example image of in- stance and keyframes of a video clip. Then a two-step fusion method is used to combine these individual re- sults and obtain a score for the likelihood of an instance to appear in a video clip. These scores are used to ob- tain a ranked list of clips the most likely to contain the queried instance. The best IRIM run has a MAP of 0.1192, which ranked us 29th on 79 fully automatic runs.
