La fréquence des couples de même sexe cohabitants a triplé aux États-Unis entre 2000 et 2021 pour atteindre 1,8 % des ménages comprenant un couple. On observe la même tendance en Australie avec 1,4 % des couples au recensement de 2021 contre 0,3 % à celui de 2001. En Espagne, leur fréquence est passée de 0,7 % en 2013 à 1,0 % en 2020, et au Royaume-Uni, de 1,0 % en 2015 et 1,4 % en 2018. En France, on comptait 170 000 personnes en couple de même sexe cohabitant en 2011, on en dénombre près de 305 000 en 2020, soit 1,0 % des couples cohabitants à cette dernière date. L’augmentation du nombre de couples de femmes est plus marquée que celle de couples d’hommes. Les personnes en couple de même sexe sont, en moyenne, plus jeunes et plus urbaines que celles en couple de sexe différent.

The aim of the article is to present the results of qualitative research into the ways women and men show love in heterosexual relationships and to indicate gender similarities and differences in this area. The analysis is based on references to traditional and modern models of femininity and masculinity. The respondents’ opinions were divided into two main areas – widely defined communication (gestures of tenderness, emotional support, behavior during misunderstandings) and specific activities (helping perform household duties or other activities for the partner, buying gifts, organizing free time, initiating sex). The analysis of the empirical material showed the interpenetration of patriarchal and modern models of femininity and masculinity in how women and men behave lovingly towards their partners. Both men and women draw inspiration from the repertoire of behaviors, as well as from traditional masculinity and femininity, evolving towards a modern model of femininity and masculinity that becomes more androgynous. In this way, they definitely expand the ways they show love, combining the more emotional, feminine ways with the more active, more traditionally “masculine” ones. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań jakościowych dotyczących sposobów okazywania miłości w heteroseksualnych związkach przez kobiety i mężczyzn oraz wskazanie podobieństw i różnic, jakie występują między płciami. Analiza odnosi się do tradycyjnego i nowoczesnego modelu kobiecości i męskości. Wypowiedzi respondentów zostały podzielone na dwa główne obszary – szeroko definiowaną komunikację (gesty czułości, wsparcie emocjonalne, zachowania podczas nieporozumień) oraz podejmowanie określonych działań (pomaganie w wykonywaniu obowiązków domowych lub innych aktywności na rzecz partnera, kupowanie prezentów, organizowanie czasu wolnego, inicjowanie seksu). Analiza materiału empirycznego pokazała przenikanie się modeli patriarchalnych i nowoczesnych kobiecości i męskości w sposobach zachowań miłosnych kobiet i mężczyzn wobec swoich partnerów. I mężczyźni, i kobiety czerpią inspiracje z repertuaru zachowań zarówno z tradycyjnej męskości, jak i z tradycyjnej kobiecości, ewoluując w kierunku nowoczesnego modelu kobiecości i męskości, które stają się bardziej androgeniczne. Tym samym zdecydowanie poszerzają zakres sposobów okazywania miłości, łącząc te bardziej emocjonalne, sfeminizowane z tymi aktywnymi, tradycyjnie „męskimi”.

Praticiennes en psychiatrie légale, nous présenterons le parcours d’une patiente suivie dans une unité forensique, en reprenant son cheminement vers le passage à l’acte criminel, nous l’analyserons au regard des fonctions du mythe et de l’histoire de Médée. Notre propos s’articulera autour de réflexions psychopathologiques propres aux femmes auteurs d’infanticide, mettant en exergue les paradoxes de la féminité soulevés par le mythe et la place du couple homme/femme. International audience; Study question: What are the motivations, experience, and acceptability of thermal male contraception (TMC) in men using TMC as the only couple contraceptive ? Summary answer: Men wished to share the role of providing contraception in a couple and to avoid the use of hormones. Sexual satisfaction was significantly improved.What is known already: Two male contraceptive methods inducing spermatogenesis suppression have achieved contraceptive efficacy, on a large population for hormonal contraception and a smaller one for thermalcontraception (TC). The suppression of sperm counts to below 1 million/mL results in fertility rates commensurate with female pills. TC is obtained by wearing 15 hours/day a contraceptive underwear (CU) inducing a 2C increase in testicular temperature (Mieusset & Bujan 1994). As no commercially available male thermal contraceptive exists, little information regarding the acceptability of this approach to men has been reported and only one publication analysed the hypothetical acceptability of TMC (Amouroux et al. 2018). Study design, size, duration: We contacted 72 men who had started the CU testing phase between June 2011 and September 2019. The participants completed an anonymous online survey of 93 questions exploring population characteristics, contraceptive histories, motivations for choosing TC, patient experience at the successive phases of use, relations with partner and environment, and satisfaction with TC. Sexual life was evaluated by rating (1 to 4): frequency and pleasure of sexual intercourse, sexual desire, morning and intercourse erections. Participants/materials, setting, methods: Among men who had reached the contraception use phase, the quality ratings of sexual life were compared over time, from the contraceptive method used before TC (“N-1” method) to the 2 previous methods (“N-2” and “N-3”)): “N-3” versus “contraception use phase”, “N-3” versus “CU testing phase,” and “CU testing phase” versus “contraception use phase.” These comparisons were made for all 5 sexual life parameters by a paired samples Wilcoxon signed rank test. Main results and the role of chance: Sixty-seven men responded (93% response rate);63 participated in the survey (94% participation rate). The median age was 31 [21-52], 30 men (48%) had a Master’s degree or more, 49 (78%) had no child and 24 (38%) no parental project. Among the men whose couple’s contraception method immediately before TC (N-1) was a female method (n ¼ 36/63, 57%), the 2 main reasons for switching to a male method were the wish to share the role of providing contraception in a couple (n ¼ 31/36, 86%) and the willingness to take responsibility for contraception (n ¼ 21/36, 58%). The main motivations for choosing TC were “not using hormones” (n ¼ 59/63, 94%) and using a method regarded as “natural” (n ¼ 49/63, 78%). Most of men (68%) adopted the method in less than 2 weeks. [EN] In the early stages of adolescence, the type of violence that is detected most often in couple relationships are bidirectional. Violence is used as a way to resolve conflicts in the relationship or as a result of controlling and jealous behaviors that occur regardless of the adolescents' sex. However, as this vital stage progresses, violent behaviors change, and significant differences are found between boys and girls, with girls being more likely to be the victims. The main objective of this study was to carry out a theoretical approach to dating violence in offline and online contexts, summarizing the main conceptual considerations that revolve around the investigation of this type of violence and deepening its description, characteristics, and typology to offer a contextual and comprehensive explanation of the evolution of this problem., [ES] En las primeras etapas de la adolescencia en general, el tipo de violencia que se detecta con más frecuencia en las relaciones de pareja es de tipo bidireccional. Se usa la violencia como forma para resolver conflictos en la relación o como consecuencia de comportamientos de control y celos que se presentan independientemente del sexo de los adolescentes. Sin embargo, a medida que avanza esta etapa vital, los comportamientos violentos se modifican y se encuentran diferencias significativas entre chicos y chicas, siendo ellas mas propensas a ser víctimas de los mismos. El objetivo principal del presente estudio es realizar una aproximación teórica a la violencia en las relaciones de pareja en el contexto offline y online, resumiendo las principales consideraciones conceptuales que giran en torno a la investigación de este tipo de violencia y profundizando en su descripción, características y tipología para intentar ofrecer una explicación contextual e integral de la evolución de esta problemática.

OBJECTIVE S2 alar-iliac (S2AI) screw fixation effectively enhances stability in long-segment constructs. Although S2AI fixation provides a single transarticular sacroiliac joint fixation (SIJF) point, additional fixation points may provide greater stability and attenuate screw and rod strain. The objectives of this study were to evaluate changes in stability and pedicle screw and rod strain with extended distal S2AI fixation and with supplemental bilateral integration of two sacroiliac joint fusion devices implanted using a traditional minimally invasive surgical approach. METHODS Eight L1–pelvis human cadaveric specimens underwent pure moment (7.5 Nm) and compression (400 N) tests under 4 conditions: 1) intact (pure moment loading only); 2) L2–S1 pedicle screw and rod with L5–S1 interbody fusion; 3) added S2AI screws; and 4) added bilateral laterally placed SIJF. Range of motion (ROM), rod strain, and screw-bending moment (S1 and S2AI) were analyzed. RESULTS Compared with S1 fixation, S2AI fixation significantly reduced L5–S1 ROM in right lateral bending by 50% (0.11°, p = 0.049) and in compression by 39% (0.22°, p = 0.003). Compared with fixation ending at S1, extending fixation with S2AI significantly decreased sacroiliac joint ROM by 52% (0.28°, p = 0.02) in flexion, by 65% (0.48°, p = 0.04) in extension, by 59% (0.76°, p = 0.02) in combined flexion-extension, and by 36% (0.09°, p = 0.02) in left axial rotation. The addition of S2AI screws reduced S1 screw-bending moment during flexion (0.106 Nm [43%], p = 0.046). With S2AI fixation, posterior L5–S1 primary rod strain increased by 124% (159 μE, p = 0.002) in flexion, by 149% (285 μE, p = 0.02) in left axial rotation, and by 99% (254 μE, p = 0.04) in right axial rotation. Compared with S2AI fixation, the addition of SIJF reduced L5–S1 strain during right axial rotation by 6% (28 μE, p = 0.04) and increased L5–S1 strain in extension by 6% (28 μE, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS Long-segment constructs ending with S2AI screws created a more stable construct than those ending with S1 screws, reducing lumbosacral and sacroiliac joint motion and S1 screw-bending moment in flexion. These benefits, however, were paired with increased rod strain at the lumbosacral junction. The addition of SIJF to constructs ending at S2AI did not significantly change SI joint ROM or S1 screw bending and reduced S2AI screw bending in compression. SIJF further decreased L5–S1 rod strain in axial rotation and increased it in extension.

This dyadic study examines the association between an individual’s sexual beliefs – i.e., one’s beliefs about aspects of sexuality that are based on cultural views and previous sexual experience – and their own and their partner’s sexual well-being. Sex and gender diverse couples from the community and online sources, across Portugal, will be recruited to participate in a cross-sectional study that involves completing an online questionnaire. Individuals will be asked to complete the survey independently from their partners. Data collection for this study is ongoing and is being conducted online so that participants can respond at the time and place they deem appropriate, increasing the accessibility of participation and the potential diversity of participants, as well as minimizing possible socially desirable responses.

We explore barriers to enjoyment of human rights to sexuality of persons with dementia and remedies for addressing these. Enjoyment of sexuality is contingent upon actualization of rights to dignity, autonomy, respect for will and preferences, abuse safeguarding and equitable access to highest standards of sexual health. Persons with dementia living at home or in care face systemic barriers to enjoyment of sexuality fueled by ageism, apathy and ignorance, compounded by complex legal barriers in relation to consent. Such challenges can be tackled with awareness raising and education of care staff, families and physicians, including training for capacity assessment with dimensional, noncategorical conceptualization of capacity, leaving room for supported decisionmaking. These measures, together with strengthened legislative and human rights frameworks to cater to the specific needs of older people, may allow people to live well with dementia and exercise their human rights to enjoy sexuality in a safe and lawful manner. ObjectiveSelf-efficacy is an important predictor of smoking cessation. Partners' confidence in the other partner's health behaviour, or other-efficacy, seems predictive of beneficial health outcomes, but has not yet been examined with respect to smoking cessation. This diary study examined whether daily fluctuations and general levels of non-smoking partners' other-efficacy relates to same- and next-day smoking, over and above smokers' own self-efficacy.DesignSmokers and their non-smoking partners (169 couples) participated in an intensive longitudinal study over 21 days with end-of-day diaries, starting on the day of planned cessation.Main Outcome MeasuresSmoking abstinenceResultsSmokers who had higher self-efficacy than other smokers in the sample had a lower probability of smoking on a given day, regardless of smoking the previous day. On days with higher self-efficacy and other-efficacy than usual, smokers had a lower probability of smoking.ConclusionTo start the quit attempt with high self-efficacy, and maintain it throughout the quit attempt seems important for successful abstinence, as this might help to overcome a lapse. This is the first study to show that other-efficacy is related to smoking behaviour. However, more research is needed regarding the temporal order of smoking and efficacy, from both smokers and spouses.

OBJECTIVE Cortical screw–rod (CSR) fixation has emerged as an alternative to the traditional pedicle screw–rod (PSR) fixation for posterior lumbar fixation. Previous studies have concluded that CSR provides the same stability in cadaveric specimens as PSR and is comparable in clinical outcomes. However, recent clinical studies reported a lower incidence of radiographic and symptomatic adjacent-segment degeneration with CSR. No biomechanical study to date has focused on how the adjacent-segment mobility of these two constructs compares. This study aimed to investigate adjacent-segment mobility of CSR and PSR fixation, with and without interbody support (lateral lumbar interbody fusion [LLIF] or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion [TLIF]). METHODS A retroactive analysis was done using normalized range of motion (ROM) data at levels adjacent to single-level (L3–4) bilateral screw–rod fixation using pedicle or cortical screws, with and without LLIF or TLIF. Intact and instrumented specimens (n = 28, all L2–5) were tested using pure moment loads (7.5 Nm) in flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation. Adjacent-segment ROM data were normalized to intact ROM data. Statistical comparisons of adjacent-segment normalized ROM between two of the groups (PSR followed by PSR+TLIF [n = 7] and CSR followed by CSR+TLIF [n = 7]) were performed using 2-way ANOVA with replication. Statistical comparisons among four of the groups (PSR+TLIF [n = 7], PSR+LLIF [n = 7], CSR+TLIF [n = 7], and CSR+LLIF [n = 7]) were made using 2-way ANOVA without replication. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS Proximal adjacent-segment normalized ROM was significantly larger with PSR than CSR during flexion-extension regardless of TLIF (p = 0.02), or with either TLIF or LLIF (p = 0.04). During lateral bending with TLIF, the distal adjacent-segment normalized ROM was significantly larger with PSR than CSR (p < 0.001). Moreover, regardless of the types of screw-rod fixations (CSR or PSR), TLIF had a significantly larger normalized ROM than LLIF in all directions at both proximal and distal adjacent segments (p ≤ 0.04). CONCLUSIONS The use of PSR versus CSR during single-level lumbar fusion can significantly affect mobility at the adjacent segment, regardless of the presence of TLIF or with either TLIF or LLIF. Moreover, the type of interbody support also had a significant effect on adjacent-segment mobility.

We present the technique of biologic tuberoplasty, where an acellular dermal allograft is used to cover the tuberosity in patients with massive irreparable cuff tears to prevent bone-to-bone contact between the tuberosity and acromion when active elevation is attempted. This technique can be performed in patients with massive rotator cuff tears who are low-demand and have significant medical comorbidities, poor bone quality, or who are not candidates for a reverse shoulder arthroplasty or who cannot tolerate a lengthy rehabilitation protocol. It is less time-consuming than a superior capsule reconstruction and more bone-sparing than traditional tuberoplasty. Patients with massive rotator cuff tears involving the supraspinatus and a portion of the infraspinatus lose their force couple, leading to superior humeral head migration with abutment of the tuberosity against the acromion upon deltoid activation. The center of rotation moves superiorly with deltoid contraction, developing an acromiohumeral articulation. This results in bone-to-bone contact between the acromion and humerus, leading to pain and acetabularization of the acromion over time. Coverage of the tuberosity with the acellular dermal allograft acts as an interpositional tissue and prevents bone-to-bone contact between the tuberosity and acromion., Technique Video Video 1 The procedure is demonstrated on a right shoulder with the patient in the lateral decubitus position. A burr is used to remove any osteophytes or hypertrophy of the tuberosity until a bleeding cancellous surface is achieved. The length of the tuberosity is measured at 30 mm and the width at 20 mm. An ArthroFlex that is 3 mm thick is then measured to these dimensions and cut to size. Three puncture holes are made and also punched to widen them in the medial and the lateral edges of the graft for easier passage of FiberTape sutures. Knotless SwiveLocks are then placed in the anteromedial, posteromedial, and central aspect of the tuberosity footprint. A 10-cc syringe with the end cut off is used to allow for easier passage of the graft. The FiberTapes, repair stitch, and loop stitch are then retrieved through the syringe from each anchor, leaving behind the pull stitch from each anchor. The sutures from each anchor are kept separated and clamped to the syringe for suture management. The repair stitch from each anchor is then passed in a mattress fashion from the edge of the graft and is then passed through the loop of the loop stitch and folded over. The pull stitch from that anchor is then pulled, bringing the repair stitch into the knotless mechanism and locking it in like a finger trap so it cannot back out. This is performed for each anchor. The mattress stitches will be used to pull the graft into the shoulder. The FiberTapes from each anchor are then passed through the pre-punched holes. The FiberTapes are then passed back through the lateral edge of the graft in an expanded speedbridge configuration. This will allow better control of the graft when lateral row anchors are placed for fixation and will eliminate dog ears in the graft. The pull sutures from each anchor are then sequentially pulled, allowing the mattress passes to shorten and thus reducing the graft into the shoulder. The graft can be seen entering the subacromial space. The pull stitches are pulled until the graft is secured to the medial edge of the footprint. Although there appears to be disorganization of sutures, when the FiberTape limbs are pulled individually, the slack is taken out of them and the graft and sutures become more manageable. The posteromedial corner of the graft is grasped and reduced to that corner and the pull stitch is pulled one last time to tighten it and secure the graft to that corner. The same step is repeated for the anteromedial corner followed by the central pull stitch. The posteromedial FiberTapes are then retrieved from a posterolateral cannula and passed into the SwiveLock anchor to fixate the graft. The steps are then repeated for the anterolateral FiberTapes and then followed by the central FiberTapes. The graft will prevent bone to bone contact between the acromion and tuberosity.

The rotator cuff has an important role in the stability and function of the glenohumeral joint. It is a complex anatomic structure commonly affected by injury such as tendinopathy and cuff tears. The rotator cuff helps to provide a stabilising effect to the shoulder joint by compressing the humeral head against the glenoid cavity via the concavity compression mechanism. To appreciate the function of the cuff it is imperative to understand the normal biomechanics of the cuff as well as the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of cuff disease. \ud \ud The shoulder joint offers a wide range of motion due to the variety of rotational moments the cuff muscles are able to provide. In order for the joint to remain stable, the cuff creates a force couple around the glenohumeral joint with coordinated activation of adjacent muscles, which work together to contain the otherwise intrinsically unstable glenohumeral joint and prevent proximal migration of the humerus. Once this muscular balance is lost, increased translations or subluxation of the humeral head may result, leading to changes in the magnitude and direction of the joint reaction forces at the glenohumeral joint. These mechanical changes may then result in a number of clinical presentations of shoulder dysfunction, disease and pain. \ud \ud This narrative review aims to highlight the importance of functional rotator cuff biomechanics whilst assessing the kinetics and kinematics of the shoulder joint, as well as exploring the various factors involved in cuff disease.

—The digital seismic network in Kamchatka deployed in 2006–2010 provided a fundamental possibility for calculating seismic moment tensor (SMT) of Kamchatka earthquakes from broadband waveforms recorded by regional stations. The paper describes the method for calculating SMT for the earthquakes with pure double couple (DC) mechanism based on the DC tensor decomposition and explicit partial linear inversion in two (of four) variables. This allows the least square objective function to be expressed in terms of two angles specifying the orientation of the neutral (zero) axis of the DC tensor. The inversion with respect to the angles is conducted using the Levenberg–Marquardt iterative method. This technique was used for calculating focal mechanisms, moment magnitudes, and equivalent point-source depths for 31 Kamchatka earthquakes with moment magnitudes Mw = 4.3–6.2. The comparison of the obtained estimates with the corresponding GCMT catalog data which exist for 19 events has shown fairly reasonable agreement between the results. The angle K characterizing the discrepancy between the DC mechanism calculated directly from the waveforms in our study and the best DC mechanism constructed from GCMT null-trace tensor is at most 25° for 16 events of 19. The moment magnitudes are underestimated by ~0.1 relative to the GCMT counterparts and the depths are underestimated by 8 km on average.

Au Canada, l’utilisation de la procréation médicalement assistée (PMA) augmente annuellement. Lorsque les couples racontent leur expérience en clinique de fertilité, leur récit est marqué par une utilisation significative du jargon médical (JM). S’inscrivant dans un projet portant sur les acteurs du don d’ovules, cette recherche qualitative exploratoire vise à décrire et comprendre l’usage du JM par les couples ainsi que les liens possibles avec leur vécu de la PMA. Les entrevues semi-dirigées de trois couples ont été sélectionnées dans un échantillon de huit couples en raison de leur usage marqué du JM. Une méthodologie qualitative inductive alliant cinq paliers d’analyses a été construite afin d’analyser les contenus manifestes et latents des entretiens. L’élaboration de la métaphore d’un voyage en navette spatiale comme moyen d’intégrer et de conceptualiser les résultats met en évidence l’intensité et la technicité du parcours en PMA de ces couples ainsi que différentes dynamiques conjugales.

STUDY DESIGN Biomechanical study of range of motion (ROM) at the vertebral levels adjacent to the construct of posterior pedicle screw-rod fixation with different types of lumbar interbody fusion techniques (LIF). OBJECTIVE To investigate the differences in adjacent segment mobility among three types of LIF: lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF), transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), and posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Previous studies have concluded that LLIF, TLIF, and PLIF with posterior pedicle screw-rod fixation (PSR) provide equivalent stability in cadaveric specimens and are comparable in fusion rate and functional outcome. However, long-term complications, such as adjacent segment degeneration associated with each type of interbody device, are currently unclear. Little is known about the biomechanical effects of interbody fusion technique on the mobility of adjacent segments. METHODS Normalized ROM data at the levels adjacent to L3-L4 PSR fixation with three different types of lumbar interbody fusion approaches (LLIF, TLIF, and PLIF) were analyzed. In a group of 355 pts submitted to Penile Prosthesis Implant (PPI) we recorded data on their relationships with the woman (wife, partner, girlfriend, lover); the aspects of their sexual life; if they were married, divorced or widowed; if they had a lover; if they frequented brothels; if they were satisfied of their actual couple’s life; after operation we recorded data concerning if they had some difficulties utilizing the PPI and their level of satisfaction. After operation most pts (93%) confirmed their satisfaction. Relational aspects: Unmarried pts: 6 pts (21-30 years old) who weren’t able to penetrate their girlfriends managed to have regular sex with PPI and could marry. 42/46 unmarried pts after PPI decided to marry. In the group of married pts 3 pts weren’t able to penetrate their wives; after PPI they managed to have regular intercourses and pregnancies. 15 widowers and 23 divorced pts decided to have a PPI for possible sexual encounters or stable relationships. 96/271 (28,2%) married pts declared a stable extramarital relation that could represent the main reason for having a PPI. The results of PPI are commonly accepted. Until now PPI may re-establish penile rigidity and maintenance. In our opinion the simple act of penetrate and ejaculate in vagina, without considering the importance of personal, relational, emotional factors often well linked to the specific woman, cannot be considered the ideal target of PPI.

Expression d’une revendication devenue un probleme social et organisationnel ainsi qu’une experience parentale ordinaire, la conciliation travail-famille est vecue dans une pluralite de significations par les jeunes qui y sont engages. Cet article examine l’importance accordee au travail et a la famille par de jeunes parents d’enfants d’âge prescolaire, en decrivant comment ils parviennent, au quotidien, a composer avec les exigences d’exister dans et hors de la vie familiale. Les analyses presentees s’appuient sur 49 entretiens semi-diriges portant sur les vies de familles et se concentrent sur les questions touchant le parcours scolaire et professionnel, la conciliation travail-famille et la description de l’horaire quotidien typique. Certaines regularites apparaissent, comme le recentrement de la vie autour des enfants, la volonte de passer du temps de qualite avec eux et l’effort de maintenir une stabilite de leur horaire, ce que les parents s’imposent comme un ideal ou un etalon. Si plusieurs strategies adoptees pour y arriver sont conjugales, il appert que les femmes font encore la majorite des concessions concernant les enfants et l’economie domestique de la famille. En outre, l’enquete suggere l’interet de recherches sur l’engagement en couple dans l’etude des parcours des jeunes : c’est en couple qu’ils negocient en situation avec leurs responsabilites, leurs contraintes de temps et la realisation de leurs aspirations personnelles et familiales. Cadre de la recherche : Cet article est issu d’une recherche sur les usages sociaux et circulations du linge dans les ménages québécois. En étudiant les processus de gestion quotidienne du linge, nous analysons le travail des frontières qui s’opère entre la responsabilité individuelle et la charge commune que représente cet ensemble de tâches domestiques.Objectifs : L’article vise à explorer la manière dont l’entretien du linge participe à la structuration spatiale, temporelle et relationnelle du chez-soi. Nous cherchons également à étudier la répartition des responsabilités en fonction des différentes logiques traversant la gestion du linge.Méthodologie : Nous avons procédé à une enquête qualitative auprès de 20 personnes vivant en couple à Montréal, qui impliquait un entretien individuel ainsi qu’une documentation photographique des différents états du linge chez les participant·e·s.Résultats : L’entretien du linge est un élément incontournable de la vie domestique qui démarque l’espace du chez-soi et qui appelle à une prise en charge cadencée. Malgré certaines tentatives de répartir plus égalitairement ces tâches, les femmes se voient attribuer une plus grande responsabilité de la gestion du linge commun, et l’arrivée des enfants précipite une logique de collectivisation des tâches autour du linge. Cela a pour effet d’enfermer les femmes et particulièrement les mères dans un rôle rattaché au bon entretien du chez-soi, notamment par la prise en charge du linge commun.Conclusion : La gestion du linge est constituée par un ensemble de pratiques et de logiques qui participent à la structuration spatiale et temporelle du chez-soi. La prise en charge de la part commune du linge par les femmes témoigne d’un lien persistant entre le féminin et l’entretien du linge, et par extension du domicile familial. By studying the processes of daily laundry management, we analyze boundary work that takes place between individual responsibility and the common burden that this set of domestic tasks represents. Objectives: Our paper aims to explore the way in which laundry care participates in the spatial, temporal and relational structuring of the “home”. We also seek to study the distribution of responsibilities according to the logics that run through laundry management. Methodology: We conducted a qualitative survey of 20 people living in couples in Montreal, which involved an individual interview as well as photographic documentation of the different states of laundry among the participants. Results: Laundry care is an essential element of domestic life that defines the “home” as a space and calls for a rhythmic approach. Despite some attempts to divide these tasks more equally, women are generally given greater responsibility for managing the common laundry, and the arrival of children precipitates a logic of collectivization of tasks around laundry. This has the effect of “imprisoning” women, especially mothers, into a role that is linked to the upkeep of the “home”, in particular by taking care of the common laundry. Conclusion: Laundry management is made up of a set of practices and logics that participate in the spatial, temporal and relational structuration of the “home”. The fact that women take care of the common part of the laundry shows a persistent link between the feminine and the upkeep of laundry, and by extension of the family home. Objetivos: El artículo busca explorar el modo en que el cuidado de la ropa participa en la estructuración espacial, temporal y relacional del hogar. También nos interesa estudiar la división de responsabilidades en función de las diferentes lógicas que atraviesan la gestión de la ropa. Metodología: Hemos realizado una encuesta cualitativa con 20 personas que viven en pareja en Montreal, lo cual implicó una entrevista individual, así como la documentación fotográfica de los diferentes estados de la ropa en los hogares de los y las participantes. Resultados: El cuidado de la ropa es un elemento esencial de la vida doméstica que delimita el espacio del hogar y exige un cuidado regular. Les parents d’enfants et d’adolescents ayant un TSA vivent de nombreux défis, notamment dans leur relation conjugale. L’analyse qualitative d’entrevues individuelles conduites auprès de 42 parents, a permis de révéler quatre défis conjugaux particuliers à l’autisme : une perception d’iniquité dans les contributions de chacun à la vie familiale, un décalage des perceptions et réactions entre les mères et les pères concernant l’autisme, une difficulté à avoir des moments de qualité en amoureux et des difficultés émotives et psychologiques. Le modèle écosystémique proposé permet de mieux comprendre ces défis et de les situer à l’intérieur du contexte familial et social., Parents of childrens and adolescents with ASD face multiples challenges, including in their dyadic relationship. This qualitative analysis of 42 individual interviews conduct among parents of children and adolescents with autism highlight and explain four particulars challenges : iniquities among contributions of each parent to family life, differences between mother’s and father’s perceptions and reactions about autism, difficulties having time together as a couple, and emotional and psychological difficulties. The ecosystemic model allow a better understanding of these challenges and situate them in the familial and social context.

Resumen: Objetivo. Comprender las formas de vinculación en la pareja que permitan la emergencia de procesos de co-evolución, a través de la construcción de prácticas democráticas en el sistema terapéutico. Metodología. La investigación se realizó a partir de una metodología de naturaleza cualitativa, elaborada desde el paradigma de la complejidad con orientación sistémica en una perspectiva de investigación-intervención. Se trabajó con un estudio de caso múltiple: dos parejas que buscaron ayuda psicoterapéutica en los Servicios de Atención Psicológica (SAP) de la Universidad Santo Tomás en la ciudad de Bogotá, escogidas bajo un muestreo intencional. Resultados y conclusión. La democracia emerge como noción fundamental para investigar e intervenir los vínculos en las relaciones de pareja, siendo un vehículo posibilitador de cambio en la resolución de conflictos, favoreciendo procesos de coevolución en las parejas y generando además cambios en la postura y en el operar del terapeuta. Abstract: Objective. To understand the forms of bonding of couples that allow the emergence of co-evolution processes, through the construction of democratic practices in the therapeutic system. Methodology. The research was carried out using a qualitative methodology, elaborated from the paradigm of complexity with a systemic orientation in a research-intervention perspective. A multiple case study was used: two couples, who sought psychotherapeutic help in the Psychological Care Services (PCS) of Universidad Santo Tomás in the city of Bogotá were chosen under intentional sampling. Results and conclusion. Democracy emerges as a fundamental notion to investigate and intervene in couple relationships, being an enabling vehicle for change in conflict resolution, favoring co-evolution processes in couples and also generating changes in the position and operation of the therapist.

Cervical dumbbell tumor is usually removed via a posterior approach and may require the spinal fixation sometimes. However, the present surgical methods involved either more trauma or a higher risk of instability of the cervical spine. A new technique of unilateral exposure and stability reconstruction with pedicle and lamina screws fixation for posterior cervical dumbbell tumorectomy was described and compared with conventional techniques. Posterior unilateral exposure, hemi-laminectomy and facetectomy were performed in one patient with the cervical dumbbell tumor between C3 and C4. The stability was reconstructed by the unilateral pedicle and lamina screws fixation (UPLS), and a strip of shaped allograft bone was also implanted between the superior and inferior lateral mass. Biomechanical stability test of this new technique was investigated using seven fresh-frozen human cervical spine specimens (C4–C7) and compared with unilateral pedicle screw (UPS) and bilateral pedicle screw fixation (BPS) techniques. A continuous pure moment of ± 2.0 Nm was applied to the specimen in flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial rotation. The cervical dumbbell tumor was removed completely, and bone fusion with continuous bone trabecula was maintained in the patient on the final follow-up examination at 18 months postoperatively. Biomechanical stability tests revealed that the range of motion of the UPLS fixation plus graft bone implant was the same as the BPS fixation in flexion (1.8°vs. 1.5°, p = 0.58) and extension (2.3°vs. 2.2°, p = 0.73), but significantly bigger in lateral bending (3.9° vs. 1.0°, p

In 1 out of 4 separations in France, the former partners continue living together under the same roof. While most often temporary, this arrangement lasts at least a year for 1 out of every 5 unions that have experienced it. ‘Living together apart’ is more frequent when couples have children and shared assets. Media coverage of research on phones and social media over the last decade has prompted widespread concern and one-size-fits-all guidance to limit screen time. Recognizing the limitations of screen time as a metric, researchers are now studying technology use in terms of affordances, individual differences, and longitudinal patterns. The current review examines technology use by parents, caregivers, couples, and clinicians. Individuals in these roles navigate risks, such as privacy violations, with benefits such as improved communication, empathy, and progress toward shared goals. Successful approaches vary by relationship type but have commonalities such as engaging with the technologies used by the other person to open up sensitive conversations, negotiate conflict, and illuminate patterns that would otherwise be hard to detect. To enhance relationships, some individuals depart from the intended use of technologies, for example, adapting connected devices for emotional communication or drawing on games to cope with social anxiety. One promising way in which individuals adapt technology to improve communication involves sharing technologies that were designed for personal use. This review highlights the importance of context, motivation, and the nuances of use to understand how technologies can be optimally used in personal and clinical relationships. .Durante la última década, la cobertura mediática de la investigación sobre teléfonos celulares y redes sociales ha generado una gran preocupación y el consejo uniforme de limitar el tiempo de uso de la pantalla. Al reconocer las limitaciones que tiene la medición solo del tiempo de pantalla, los investigadores ahora están estudiando el empleo de la tecnología en términos de accesibilidad, diferencias individuales y patrones longitudinales. Esta revisión examina la utilización de la tecnología por parte de padres, cuidadores, parejas y clínicos. En estos roles las personas se desenvuelven con riesgos (violaciones de la privacidad), y con beneficios (mejor comunicación, mayor empatía y mayor progreso hacia objetivos comunes). Los puntos comunes de una práctica exitosa, además de la variabilidad del tipo de relación, se basan en la adopción de las tecnologías utilizadas por el otro para iniciar conversaciones sensibles, negociar conflictos y resaltar modelos de funcionamiento que de otro modo hubieran sido difíciles de identificar. Para mejorar las relaciones, algunas personas se apartan del uso previsto de las tecnologías, por ejemplo, adaptando los dispositivos conectados para una comunicación emocional o recurriendo a juegos para enfrentar la ansiedad social. Es alentador observar cómo las personas se apropian de estas tecnologías originalmente diseñadas para uso personal y las comparten, con el objetivo de mejorar la comunicación. En esta revisión se destaca la importancia del contexto, la motivación y los matices del empleo de las tecnologías para comprender cómo se pueden utilizar de manera óptima en las relaciones personales y clínicas.Ces dix dernières années, la couverture médiatique de la recherche sur les téléphones portables et les réseaux sociaux a suscité une inquiétude généralisée et la diffusion de conseils uniformisés sur la limitation du temps d'écran. La mesure du temps passé devant l'écran ayant depuis été reconnue comme une donnée limitée, les chercheurs étudient aujourd’hui l'utilisation de la technologie en termes d'accessibilité, de différences individuelles et de modèles longitudinaux. Cet article examine l’usage qu’en font les parents, les soignants, les couples et les médecins. Ces utilisateurs font face à des risques, tels que la violation de la vie privée, mais profitent aussi d’une amélioration dans la communication, une plus grande empathie et progressent vers des objectifs communs. Les points communs d’une pratique réussie, hors variabilité relationnelle, reposent sur l’adoption des technologies utilisées par l'autre pour engager des échanges sensibles, négocier des conflits et mettre en lumière des schémas de fonctionnement qui auraient été difficiles à identifier autrement. Pour améliorer leurs relations aux autres, certains détournent ces outils technologiques, par exemple en se servant d’appareils connectés pour une communication émotionnelle ou en ayant recours à des jeux pour gérer leur anxiété sociale. Resumen La violencia en el noviazgo que se ejerce a través de los medios tecnológicos y redes sociales (online) ha mostrado tener una alta frecuencia en la población de jóvenes y adolescentes. Se trata de un fenómeno relativamente nuevo cuya existencia ha sido catalogada como una extensión de la violencia ejercida cara a cara u offline. Pese a esto, son pocas las investigaciones encaminados en estudiar la relación entre ambos fenómenos. Por ello, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar la prevalencia y asociación entre la violencia offline y online en el noviazgo. Participaron 443 adolescentes (231 mujeres y 212 varones), quienes respondieron el Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationship Inventory y el Cyber Dating Abuse Questionaire. Los resultados muestran la naturaleza bidireccional de las conductas violentas offline y online, lo que podría indicar su normalización. Entre otros datos, se resalta que la mayor perpetración de violencia emocional y física es ejercida por las mujeres, lo que iría en contravía de los perfiles convencionales de mujeres víctimas y hombres victimarios. No obstante, es preciso señalar que la violencia sexual fue mayormente ejercida por varones, lo cual es congruente con lo hallado en diversos estudios. Por último, se halló una asociación positiva entre la perpetración de la violencia offline y online en el noviazgo, lo que comprueba que las conductas violentas que se ejercen cara a cara se podrían trasladar a los medios tecnológicos y redes sociales. Abstract Dating violence through technological media and social networks has been shown to have a high frequency in the youth and adolescent population. It is a relatively new phenomenon whose existence has been classified as an extension of violence exercised face to face. Despite this, there is little research aimed at studying the relationship between the two phenomena. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the prevalence and association between cyber dating violence (online) and dating violence (offline). It involved 443 adolescents (231 women and 212 men), who answered the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationship Inventory and the Cyber Dating Abuse Questionnaire. The results showed the two-way nature of cyber dating violence and dating violence, which could indicate their normalization. Among other data, it is highlighted that the greatest perpetration of emotional and physical violence is exercised by women, which would go against the conventional profiles of female victims and male offenders. However, it should be noted that sexual violence was mostly perpetrated by men, which is consistent with what has been found in various studies. Finally, a positive association was found between offline and online perpetration of violence in dating, which suggests that violent behaviors that are exercised face to face could be transferred to technological media and social networks.

The Mn-III/Mn-II redox couple with a standard potential of +1.51 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) has attracted interest for the design of V/Mn redox flow batteries (RFBs). However, Mn-III disproportionation leads to a loss of capacity, an increase in pressure drop, and electrode passivation caused by the formation of MnO2 particles during battery cycling. In this work, the influence of Ti-IV or/and V-V on Mn-III stability in acidic conditions is studied by formulating four different electrolytes in equimolar ratios (Mn, Mn/Ti, Mn/V, Mn/V/Ti). Voltammetry studies have revealed an ECi process for Mn-II oxidation responsible for the electrode passivation. SEM and XPS analysis demonstrate that the nature and morphology of the passivating oxides layer depend strongly on the electrolyte composition. Spectroelectrochemistry highlights the stabilization effect of Ti-IV and V-V on Mn-III. At a comparable pH, the amount of Mn-III loss through disproportionation is decreased by a factor of 2.5 in the presence of Ti-IV or/and V-V. Therefore, V-V is an efficient substitute for Ti-IV to stabilize the Mn-III electrolyte for RFB applications.

Dans l’espace du travail indépendant, la répartition des tâches domestiques et professionnelles entre les conjoint·es est généralement étudiée dans des métiers animés d’un certain conservatisme, ou dans lesquels l’engagement professionnel des femmes est une adaptation à un projet de couple. Cet article propose de réfléchir aux rapports sociaux de sexe dans le métier de céramiste d’art, qui offre une configuration très différente : fortement féminisé, structuré par une culture se voulant égalitariste, dont les membres le choisissent au nom d’une volonté d’accomplissement personnel. Ils et elles sont doté·es de dispositions cultivées et se revendiquent d’une culture politique de gauche. Dès lors, comment expliquer la faible présence des acquis féministes dans les modes de vie et de travail de ces travailleur·ses indépendant·es ? Après avoir dessiné les contours démographiques du métier et de sa culture professionnelle, le texte expose les inégalités qui se déploient au sein des foyers où la céramique d’art est exercée par l’un des conjoints, ou les deux. Nous montrons comment des enjeux matériels et symboliques produisent diverses formes d’invisibilisation du travail de la femme céramiste, au sein de l’unité domestique comme de la sphère professionnelle. Enfin, nous proposons des analyses explicatives de ces inégalités de genre, a priori paradoxales dans un espace social vécu comme une alternative à d’autres formes de domination. In self-employed activities, the division of domestic and professional tasks between partners is usually studied in occupations with a certain degree of conservatism, or in which women’s careers are actually an adaptation to their couple’s project. This article reflects on gender relations within the occupational group of art ceramicists, which offers quite a different situation: not only is it strongly feminized, but it is also organized according to principles intended to be egalitarian. Besides, its members are endowed with cultivated dispositions, claim a left-wing political culture, and choose ceramics out of a desire of self-fulfillment. How, then, can we explain the limited effects of feminist achievements in the lifestyles and work of these self-employed workers? After drawing the demographic contours of this occupation and its culture, the article outlines the inequalities that exist within households, where either one or both spouses practise(s) ceramics. We then show how material and symbolic dimensions generate diverse forms of invisibility of women’s work, both within the domestic unit and the professional sphere. Finally, we provide some explanations regarding the persistence of these gender inequalities, which seem paradoxical in an occupation that is seen as an alternative to other forms of domination.

Partners increasingly resemble each other in terms of earnings across Western countries. These increases in earnings similarity are often considered to be drivers behind growing income inequality between households. We argue that increases in earnings similarity do not necessarily lead to augmented inequality between households. Their overall effect depends on whether and how the processes that increase earnings similarity affect inequality through other pathways. Using data from the Luxembourg Income Study on 21 countries, we decompose changes over time in earnings inequality. We show that even though the correlation in earnings between partners increased in most countries, this only amplified inequality on some occasions. In several countries, increases in the earnings correlation are driven by general changes in employment rates. Given that these increases in employment equalized earnings across households through other pathways, the inherently connected increases in the earnings correlation are of less concern from an inequality perspective. In other countries, where increases in earnings similarity are produced by augmented similarity in earnings among dual-breadwinner couples or by selective changes in employment, increases in earnings similarity are of more concern for inequality between households.

In this article, the ways and the benefits of family therapy are analyzed to improve family dynamics and relationships

La ruptura de pareja es un evento extremadamente doloroso, del que pueden derivarse numerosas consecuencias psicológicas negativas. Con el objetivo de reducir estas, se ha diseñado una propuesta de intervención consistente en un programa (“AGRUPAR”: Ayuda Guiada para la Ruptura de Pareja) dirigido a ocho jóvenes de 18 a 24 años. El taller consiste en once sesiones que durarán aproximadamente una hora y tendrán lugar en el Centro De Salud Altabix (Elche). Durante las sesiones se tratarán distintas variables como la toma de decisiones y resolución de problemas, habilidades de comunicación, autoconcepto, etc., a través de actividades basadas en técnicas como la reevaluación cognitiva, el Mindfulness, el role-playing, etc. Además, se contará con el uso de encuestas de calidad y de controles de asistencia para adaptar las condiciones del taller de la forma más idónea posible a los jóvenes. Se trata de un programa piloto, puesto que no existen otros centrados en reducir el impacto de la ruptura en adultos jóvenes, por lo que se espera obtener resultados positivos. The break-up of a couple is an extremely painful event, from which numerous negative psychological consequences can derive. With the aim of reducing these, an intervention proposal has been designed consisting of a programme ("AGRUPAR": Guided Help for Couple Break-up) aimed at eight young people aged 18 to 24. The programme consists of eleven sessions lasting approximately one hour and will take place in the Altabix Health Center (Elche). During the sessions, different variables such as decision making and problem solving, communication skills, self-concept, etc. will be treated through activities based on techniques such as cognitive reappraisal, Mindfulness, role-playing, etc. In addition, quality surveys and attendance controls will be used to adapt the conditions of the programme to the young people in the most suitable way possible. This is a pilot programme, as there are no other programmes focused on reducing the impact of break-up in young adults, and positive results are expected.

MDMA’s first identified potential as a therapeutic catalyst was for couple therapy. Early work in the 1970s and 1980s explored its potential amongst seasoned psychotherapists and their clients. With the completion of the first pilot trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy with couples for PTSD (Monson et al., 2020; Wagner et al., 2019), and as the possibility of conducting MDMA-assisted psychotherapy trials expands due to new regulatory frameworks, we have an opportunity to explore and investigate how and why MDMA-assisted couples therapy works. This theoretical paper will explore the neurobiological and neurochemical effects of MDMA in a relational context, the emotional, behavioural, cognitive and somatic effects within a dyadic frame, and how empathy, communication, perception of social connection/support, non-avoidance, openness, attachment/safety, bonding/social intimacy and relationship satisfaction, are all impacted by MDMA, and can be harnessed to facilitate systems-level and interpersonal healing and growth. A model to support MDMA-assisted couple therapy is introduced, and future directions, including implications for intervention development and delivery, will be elucidated.

This study aims to evaluate the biomechanical stability of a novel lateral plate (NLP) that can be used in oblique lateral lumbar fusion (OLIF).In vitro biomechanical tests were performed on 6 fresh calf lumbar vertebrae specimens. The surgical segment was set at L3-L4. Each specimen was tested in the following order: intact state (INT); OLIF cage only/stand-alone (SA); cage supplemented with lateral screw-rod (LSR); cage supplemented with novel lateral plate (NLP); and cage supplemented with unilateral or bilateral pedicle screw-rod (UPS or BPS). A pure moment of ±7.5 Nm was applied to the specimen to produce 6 different motion directions, including flexion and extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, and the range of motion (ROM) of L3-L4 in each direction was recorded.In addition to flexion-extension, NLP reduced the ROM of SA (P0.05). In flexion-extension, the ROM of NLP was similar to those of SA and LSR (P0.05); compared to pedicle screw-rod (PSD), the ROM of NLP was higher (P0.05). In lateral bending, the ROM of NLP was close to that of LSR and PSD (P0.05). In axial rotation, the ROM of NLP was higher than that of PSD (P0.05), and close to that of LSR (P0.05).NLP can enhance surgical segment stability in all directions of motion, similar to LSR, but weaker than UPS and BPS in flexion-extension and rotation.

L’article propose un panorama des recherches sociologiques réalisées en France sur la vie affective et sexuelle des jeunes. Définie d’abord par rapport aux rôles adultes (actif professionnellement, conjoint, parents…), la jeunesse a été envisagée d’abord négativement comme une période de « latence», un temps suspendu d’attentes ou d’expérimentation. La vie intime des jeunes a alors été interprétée comme une «jeunesse sexuelle» émaillées d’expériences non-conjugales, instables, en raison de l’impossibilité à s’installer conjugalement. Une autre approche construit les jeunes comme dépendants (de leurs parents) et en même temps autonomes. Ils vivent la jeunesse comme une période positive et valorisée de construction personnelle. La vie intime des jeunes adultes peut alors être comprise comme une période de socialisation active où s’expérimentent différents registres relationnels et s’acquière une expérience relationnelle amoureuse et sexuelle indispensable pour l’individu.

Objective: Smoking cessation interventions that use implementation intentions have shown promising results. Implementation intentions are if-then plans that specify certain behaviour within a situational context. This study examines whether dyadic planning (i.e., involving a non-smoking partner) is more effective than individual planning in quitting smoking. Design: This longitudinal single-blind randomized controlled trial involves a baseline questionnaire, end-of-day measurements for three weeks, and a follow-up questionnaire after three months. Single-smoking couples were randomized to a dyadic or individual planning condition. After the intervention, which 176 couples received, smokers attempted to quit smoking, and the diary measurements started. Main Outcome Measures: smoking abstinence, number of cigarettes smoked and relationship satisfaction. Results: At follow-up, both planning groups showed similar quit rates (33%, dyadic; 30%, individual) and a similar significant decline in number of cigarettes smoked (almost 50%). For most smokers, the smoking pattern shown in the diary seemed to be indicative of smoking behaviour at follow-up. Relationship satisfaction declined minimally, in both intervention groups and in both smokers and partners. Conclusion: The involvement of a non-smoking partner in the planning did not increase its effectiveness. However, couple participation and daily measurements during a quit attempt could be important components of future interventions.

Background Although the rib cage provides substantial stability to the thoracic spine, few biomechanical studies have incorporated it into their testing model, and no studies have determined the influence of the rib cage on adjacent segment motion of long fusion constructs. The present biomechanical study aimed to determine the mechanical contribution of the intact rib cage during the testing of instrumented specimens. Methods A cyclic loading (CL) protocol with instrumentation (T4–L2 pedicle screw-rod fixation) was conducted on five thoracic spines (C7–L2) with intact rib cages. Range of motion (±5 Nm pure moment) in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation was captured for intact ribs, partial ribs, and no ribs conditions. Comparisons at the supra-adjacent (T2–T3), adjacent (T3–T4), first instrumented (T4–T5), and second instrumented (T5–T6) levels were made between conditions (P ≤ 0.05). Findings A trend of increased motion at the adjacent level was seen for partial ribs and no ribs in all 3 bending modes. This trend was also observed at the supra-adjacent level for both conditions. No significant changes in motion compared to the intact ribs condition were seen at the first and second instrumented levels (P > 0.05). Interpretation The segment adjacent to long fusion constructs, which may appear more grossly unstable when tested in the disarticulated spine, is reinforced by the rib cage. In order to avoid overestimating adjacent level motion, when testing the effectiveness of surgical techniques of the thoracic spine, inclusion of the rib cage may be warranted to better reflect clinical circumstances.

We present a joint inversion for empirical Green’s functions (EGFs) and high‐resolution non‐double‐couple (non‐DC) moment tensors. First, the EGFs are constructed using known moment tensors of earthquakes occurring in a small focal zone. Second, the estimated EGFs are applied to refine the original moment tensors used for constructing the EGFs. Because the EGFs describe the velocity model better than the standard GFs, the refined moment tensors are more accurate. The method is applied to real observations of earthquakes of the 2008 swarm in West Bohemia, Czech Republic, where tiny details in fracturing in the focal zone are revealed. Refined moment tensors indicate fault closing caused by compaction of fault gouge during fracturing process related to fault weakening by fluids in the focal zone. The application of the proposed inversion can improve moment tensors reported in existing local, regional, or global catalogs for areas with a concentrated seismicity.

Summary of background data Literature lacks clear consensus regarding the implant of choice for early-onset scoliosis. Multiple systems are currently available, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, studying novel designs that can credibly accommodate growth and curb deformity progression is of principle importance. Methods In vitro biomechanical motion tests were done using six porcine thoracic spines with pedicle screws at T3 and T8. A pure moment of ±5 Nm was loaded in lateral bending (LB) and flexion-extension. Range of motion (ROM) and neutral zone (NZ) of each specimen was determined after connecting the free movable growing rods (FGRs), RGRs, and standard rods (SRs). Tensile tests were done to measure the force required to elongate the RGR with springs, without springs, and with soft tissue encapsulation (induced in vivo in rabbits). Results Global ROM, implanted T3-T8 ROM, and the NZ of specimens with FGRs and RGRs were significantly higher than that with SRs. The RGRs favored unidirectional elongation in both LB and flexion. The tensile forces required for elongating the RGR without springs, with springs, and with soft tissue capsulation (by a scaled unit of 3 mm) were 3 ± 1.3 N, 10.5 ± 0.4 N, and 48.4 ± 14.4 N, respectively. Conclusion The RGR could stabilize and favor unidirectional elongation of the implanted spinal column when appropriate forces were present. There was no device failure as far as we have studied and it is anticipated that, with further safety and feasibility assessment, RGRs could be adapted for clinical use. Level of evidence N/A.

Context Whereas the serratus anterior (SA) and the upper trapezius (UT) work as a force couple for scapular motion, weakness of the SA and overactivation of the UT are often present in overhead athletes with shoulder dysfunction. Therefore, researchers addressing an intramuscular imbalance between the SA and UT have focused on finding exercises that target the weak SA and minimally activate the UT. Objective To compare the effectiveness of push-up plus (PUP) exercise variants based on the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the SA and UT. Data Sources A systematic search of PubMed and Scopus between January 1, 2000, and March 31, 2008. Study Selection Studies of PUP exercises that involved EMG analysis. Data Extraction We assessed study quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program. For the systematic analysis, the following data were extracted: (1) author, year, and study design; (2) participant characteristics; (3) type of PUP intervention; (4) EMG outcome measures; and (5) main results. For the meta-analysis, the EMG data of the SA and UT were calculated using the mean difference of EMG activity with a 95% confidence interval. Data Synthesis Based on 19 studies with 356 participants, different hand positions (the distance between the hands, shoulder-flexion angle, and elbow-flexion angle) and different lower extremity positions variably affected the activation of the SA and UT during the PUP exercise. Also, when participants performed the PUP on an unstable surface compared with a stable surface, UT activity increased 2.74% (95% confidence interval = 0.07%, 5.41%). Conclusions The standard PUP exercise elicited high EMG activity of the SA. Participants generated higher SA and lower UT EMG activity when they performed the PUP exercise on a stable surface in full elbow extension, with the hands placed shoulder-width apart, shoulder-flexion angles of 110° or 120°, and the ipsilateral lower extremity lifted.

The purpose of the study is to examine the biomechanical alterations in the index and adjacent levels of the human cervical spine after cervical arthroplasty with Bryan, Prodisc C, or Prestige LP. A previously validated C2–T1 osteoligamentous finite element model was used to perform virtual C5–6 arthroplasty using three different FDA-approved artificial cervical discs. Motion-controlled moment loading protocol was used. Moment was varied until Bryan, Prodisc C, and Prestige LP models displayed the same total range of motion across C3–C7 as the intact spine model at 2 Nm of pure moment loading. Range of motion (ROM) and facet force (FF) were recorded at the index level. ROM, FF, and intradiscal pressure (IDP) were recorded at the adjacent levels. Prodisc C and Prestige LP led to supraphysiologic ROM and FF at the index level while decreasing ROM and FF at the adjacent levels. In contrast, Bryan reduced ROM and FF at the index level. Bryan increased ROM and FF at the adjacent levels in flexion, but decreased ROM and FF in the adjacent levels in extension. Prodisc C decreased IDP at the adjacent levels. Bryan reduced IDP in extension only. Prestige LP increased adjacent-level IDP. The distinct designs and material compositions of the three artificial discs result in varying biomechanical alterations at the index and adjacent levels in the cervical spine after implantation. The findings confirm the design and material influence on the spine biomechanics, as well as the advantages and contraindications of cervical arthroplasty in general. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the deflection of the flexible airship structure in a new way which can decrease the calculation amount and improve the calculation speed. Design/methodology/approach Infinitesimal method and tapered inflatable beam theory are combined to study the mechanics characteristics of the airship. Firstly, infinitesimal method is introduced into the airship structure analysis. The airship structure can be divided into several tapered inflatable beam elements. Then, tapered inflatable beam theory is improved and a developed model of the tapered inflatable beam under bending moment is presented. Besides, it is proved that deflection caused by pure load and pure moment can be linearly superimposed. Finally, the deflection of the airship structure is studied by means of tapered inflatable beam theory. Findings This paper improved the tapered inflatable beam theory. Besides, the proposed method for deflection analysis of the flexible airship in this paper can reach the same accuracy with traditional finite element method (FEM). However, the number of beam elements is much less than the one of FEM shell elements, which will decrease the calculation amount much and improve the calculation speed. Practical implications The flexible airship is a new and developing research area in engineering practice. The proposed method in this paper provides one precise and high-speed way to analyse the deformation of the airship. Originality/value The paper draws its value from the contributions to development of inflatable structure and the flexible airship mechanics research.
